The Hate U Give Review

The expression “YA” has become synonymous, to some audiences, with allegorical tales of epic science fiction and fantasy, where young adults overcome adversity and become incredible heroes. But YA fiction need not be fantastical to tell a meaningful coming of age story. And so, in the great tradition of To Kill a Mockingbird and Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry comes Angie Thomas’s bestselling novel The Hate U Give. It’s a story that’s epic in theme, intimate in character, and which translates powerfully to the big screen.

The Hate U Give stars Amandla Stenberg (The Darkest Minds) as Starr, a teenager who lives with her family in a crime-ridden black community, but whose parents Maverick (Russell Hornsby, Fences) and Lisa (Regina Hall, Girls Trip) work overtime to send her to an uppercrust, predominantly white private school. In her voice-over, Starr explains that there are two versions of herself: Version One lives in her community and embraces her culture, and Version Two goes to school and mutes her colloquialisms, and avoids discussing social issues. She lives in two separate worlds, and as her story begins she is reasonably comfortable in both. Both of Starr’s worlds fall apart when, in the midst of a traffic stop, a white police officer panics and shoots her childhood friend Khalil (Algee Smith, Detroit). At home her community is in mourning, at school she can’t talk about it without becoming an outsider. And if she testifies against the officer, she’ll open herself up to unwanted publicity, threats, and a complete collapse of both of her lives.

Frances McDormand Stops By Allison Janney’s Post-Oscars Interview to Give Her a Sip of Tequila

Cheers!

Allison Janney‘s post-2018 Oscars interview with ABC’s Lara Spencer got an extra dose of fun when Best Actress winner Frances McDormand stopped by and shared a sip of tequila with the I, Tonya star.

McDormand was hustling behind the interview, drink in hand, when Spencer paused to say hello. Without skipping a beat, the Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri star told Janney, “Cheers, darling. Have a little sip — tequila!”

Janney, who took home the prize for Best Supporting Actress, happily obliged despite saying that she wanted to keep her imbibing minimal.

“Every part of this day is emblazoned in my mind. I want to remember it. I’ll have a little bit of this just to enhance it,” she told Spencer, referring to the glass of champagne in her hand, “but I want to remember.”

Janney also praised McDormand’s powerful acceptance speech, in which she asked the female nominees across all categories to rise from their seats.

“That was the best moment, when she made all the women stand up,” the 58-year-old actress said to Spencer. “It was really special. It was one of my favorite moments of the night.”

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

When asked by ABC if she had prepared an acceptance speech, Janney said, “Oh my gosh. If I could show you the pages and pages of speeches I have written,” promising to take a picture and someday share them with her fans.

Be sure to check out PEOPLE’s full Academy Awards coverage to get the latest news on Hollywood’s big night.

She continued, “All these brilliant writer friends of mine have all contributed and given me ideas, and I have stolen from every single one of them.”

Janney’s experience at the annual awards ceremony was quite the change from how she spent some previous Oscar Sundays.

“I have watched these awards — the Oscars — for the past 40 years on couches with friends — and sweatpants,” she explained during an interview on the PEOPLE and Entertainment Weekly Red Carpet Live pre-show.

The 2018 Oscars were held at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center on March 4 and were telecast live on ABC.

John Leguizamo Says He’s Willing to Give Up Acting to Run for Office

John Leguizamo, creator of the Broadway show Latin History for Morons, has never shied away from using his immense platform to voice his opinions, especially to criticize the polices and actions of President Donald Trump. Now, the actor reveals his willingness to sacrifice his life’s passions —  acting and writing — to stand up for his beliefs by launching a political campaign.

Although the 53-year-old continues to add more projects to his plate, the Latino actor admitted that he would give up his decades-long career to thwart the advancement of the new political today: “You know, I love what I do. I would hate to give it up,” Leguizamo told DailyBeast.com. “But if I could I would run for office in Texas. I would run someplace heinous to make a difference.”

Leguizamo’s Broadway show, which chronicles the long, illustrious, often fraught history of Latinos in the U.S., serves as an inspiration for his political agenda. “I would run… to get rid of gerrymandering and to allow people to teach Latino history in Texas which is 39 percent Latino and around 12 percent black, so we people of color are the majority. Why are we so beaten down there?”

But the actor isn’t going to wait for his day in office. The Carlito’s Way star will use his current work to affect the change he wants to see in the world starting in November 2018. During the next election season, Leguizamo wants to take Latin History for Morons to major cities like Chicago, Denver, Miami and many more to galvanize Latinos to get involved: “Latinos need to be motivated to be re-motivated, and maybe even inspired for the first time to understand how much right they have to speak out and stand up for themselves,” he told the online magazine.

Maison Margiela to Give Rare Glimpse Behind the Scenes

NOW YOU SEE IT: Maison Margiela is ready to lift the veil a little further on its creative process.
The Paris-based house, famed for its anonymous approach to design, will launch a new Instagram Stories series with the hashtag #MaisonMargielaInsideOut during the finale of creative director John Galliano’s women’s wear show, scheduled to take place at 11 a.m. on Wednesday.
The first in the series is a one-minute clip, directed by London-based filmmaker Sean Frank, that is being shot in the Margiela design studios in the 24 hours leading up to the ready-to-wear display. It will also be posted on the brand’s web site www.maisonmargiela.com.
In addition to revealing the inspiration and background of the collection, “Inside Out” will highlight Margiela’s new handbag, debuting on the runway. Further instalments will follow, all linked to the rtw activities of the house.
The concept comes on the heels of the Maison Margiela Artisanal couture show in July, which featured a decor showcasing the offbeat items with which Galliano surrounds himself while he works, as well as hair-and-makeup stations. 5 Compliments To Give Your Spouse Today

Loving words and compliments can go a long way in making a healthy marriage last.

Whether you have only been married for six months and it is still easy to find things to tell your partner that you love about them, or you have been married for several decades and your compliment bank is running on low, your partner enjoys hearing loving words of affirmation from you.

Here are five compliments that never get old. Your partner won’t tire of hearing these words come from your mouth and it will be a nice reminder that you haven’t checked out of your marriage.

1. “I love how you parent our children”

Moms and dads can both be unsure or insecure about their parenting skills. There is no required book or manual for it (unlike getting a driver’s license), so they are constantly wondering if they are doing it right or messing up royally.

Reassure your spouse frequently that you appreciate them as a parent and recognize that they are trying to do a good job raising your children. Tailor the compliment to be even more specific to their parenting style or a skill that they excel in, such as, “I love the way you play with the kids,” or “I’m so grateful you’re able to help our son with his math homework.”

2. “I’m so glad I married you”

After being in a regular, routine relationship for so long our partners can forget what first attracted you to them in the first place. Reminisce about the reasons that made you fall in love so long ago and remind your partner of those reasons. Then express how your life has changed and grown since then and why you are still grateful that you chose them to be your partner in this life.

3. “I appreciate you”

We get so situated and used to our marital roles and everyday tasks. Perhaps he works while you raise the kids. Maybe you both work and he manages the yard while you manage inside the home. Don’t take what the other person does for granted. Thank them for what they do for the family and point out specifically the work they’ve done. You can compliment them on a delicious dinner made, point out the extra hours they’ve been putting in at the office, or notice the new flowers that were planted in the yard. They’ll appreciate being appreciated.

4. “You look beautiful (handsome or hot)”

No matter how long you’ve been married, your partner still wants to know that you find them attractive. Remind them that they are still physically alluring to you by pointing it out. You’ll score bonus points if you can compliment specific things or features that are especially appealing to you, such as a new outfit, a fresh shave, or a new haircut.

5. “I love spending time with you”

Your partner wants to be appreciated and found attractive, but they also want to know that you still enjoy their company. Next time you are on a date or fun family outing, remind them of how much you enjoy being with them, then tell them the reasons why. Perhaps it is because they are so fun, easygoing or have a great sense of humor. Whatever it may be, remind them why you still like spending time with them.

So much of our world and interactions can be negative. We also often get into such a routine of living with another person that we forget to take the time to compliment them. We may be grateful for them in our minds, but not profess this audibly. Keep your marriage healthy and filled with love by complimenting your spouse regularly.

Adorable New Photos Of Will And Kate Will Give You Royal Wedding Déjà Vu

We’d all love to repeatedly relive the magic that was Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding. And it looks like they’ve done just that.

Will and the former Kate Middleton attended the Royal Ascot in Ascot, England on Tuesday in looks that were only slightly less fancy than what they wore to their nuptials in 2011.

Kate even stuck to wearing Alexander McQueen, the fashion house that designed her iconic wedding gown, for the occasion. She looked lovely in a white lace dress and matching fascinator. Will looked like a groom handsome in a suit and large top hat.

When Will and Kate weren’t busy looking painfully adorable, Kate was engaging in one of her other strong suits, managing to kiss people hello while also wearing an elaborate headpiece.

Can you say “vow renewals?”

The Career Advice No One Will Give You

Below is an excerpt from Weird in a World That’s Not: A Career Guide for Misfits, F*ckups, and Failures by Jennifer Romolini, Chief Content Officer at Shondaland.com.

Over the decade or so since I officially became an editor, I’ve sat on a number of conference panels, with a number of silly-formal conference-panel names. I’ve given speeches with post-speech Q&As, been a guest speaker in classrooms, and been interviewed about my career for publications, both biggish and small.

The questions I am asked in these situations range in quality and scope —sometimes people want to know old magazine yarns, sometimes they want to talk about womyn on the Internet, sometimes about something real sexy, like how brands can reach an audience across platforms. But most of the questions I get involve advice — What’s your advice for young editors? What would you tell new college grads?, and then, if the moderator/interviewer/question-asker is trying to mix things up, What career advice would you have given yourself?

This question is an old trope, a popular magazine-essay packaging device, a way to make an audience simultaneously sentimental about wisdom and nostalgic for youth. We see variations of this self-advice construct in web articles, bundled up in “Letters to Myself” books, in videos where semi-famous people fade into one another as they espouse inspiring aphorisms about life. It’s intimate. It’s navel-gazing. It’s nurturing. It somehow flatters us all.

Whenever I am asked this question in public, I don’t really know what to say. (So I say something canned, like “A little sugar goes a long way!” Or something I think will get a laugh, like “Wear a bra!” Hardy har.) The real advice I wish I could give my younger self is more intense and harsh than what I’d give to others, what I’d give to you. It’s not a sound bite, it’s not onstage cool. What would have been most useful to me in the early stages of my career, during the period between first-job terror and middle-management malaise — in addition to all the more general advice you’ve read so far in this book — is embarrassing and intimate. It’s tough love. It’s not always nice. Here’s what I would have told myself. Maybe it will help you too.

You’ll Suck at Everything the First Time You Do It

You will probably suck the second and third time too. Don’t get defensive about this; don’t decide that you should never do the thing again because you’re as worthless as a chin zit. Don’t compare yourself to other people who have been doing the thing longer, who have practiced and are better. Who were maybe born better—who cares. Don’t pretend the reasonable person critiquing your work is wrong and awful and your sub-standard work is up to snuff because believing this soothes your ego. That thing you did sucks, but it doesn’t matter: with effort, you can become great at almost anything except maybe (at this point) professional sports. Accept this as reality, stop getting so mad, stop being so mean to yourself, and start working to make it good.

There Will Never Be a Positive Consensus about You

Some people just won’t like you, whatever. There’s no amount of extra-teeth smiling or forced charm or jokes or compliments or social games or happy-face emoji DMs that will change their minds. Sometimes people just won’t like the cut of your jib. Sometimes you will say or do the wrong thing, put your foot in your mouth, and cause irreparable harm. You’re human, you fuck up. Don’t fixate on this. Don’t clap back. Learn from the situation and move on.

Stop Vacillating between “I Am Garbage” and “I Am God”

This is annoying. And it’s exhausting. All these self-esteem swings are tuckering you out. You don’t need to be one or the other. You’re in the middle. Everyone is. Even Kanye. Moderate your ego. Do your best. Seek out new opportunities. Don’t be afraid to take risks. Some days you will feel good about your work, some days you will feel bad, but all days you are fundamentally the same. Ground yourself so you don’t crave constant validation, so that every accomplishment or positive reinforcement, every negative comment or rejection, doesn’t redefine who you are. Call your grandma. Do something kind. Think about someone else for a while. That will help.

Chill the Fuck Out

You’re taking work too personally and too seriously, you’re confronting people too much with too much hostility, you’re letting every tiny facet of work get under your skin, and you’re freaking people out. Put aside that America hates assertive/ aggressive/ambitious women more than it hates puppy killers; put aside that if you were a man, these “problems” would most likely never have been a concern. The fact that all your performance reviews say “difficult,” “rubs people the wrong way,” “bedside manner: meh” cannot be blamed entirely on misogyny. This is not the case for everyone, but it is for you. You need to slow your roll just a bit, find the middle of your dial, take the time to pause, read the room, think it out, and come at the issue calmly, with a plan. By not doing this, you’re hurting yourself more than you’re hurting anyone else.

Stop Treating Your Career Like a Race to the Death Sprint

Man alive, you are going to put so many hours into this career, so many weekends and early mornings and late nights. You are going to talk about this career until you’re hoarse, and work so hard you feel blind. You need to slow down; it’s not going anywhere. You need to take care of yourself. Stop drinking so much. Get some sleep. Sit for a moment with your disappointments instead of racing to the next thing. Stop trying to run away from uncomfortable situations. Identify your triggers; understand what makes you feel most anxious and insecure, so your anxiety and insecurity don’t make you do fucked-up things to other people. Read all those old New Yorkers. Or don’t. Read a trashy book. Or better, read Cheryl Strayed. Just read something that has nothing to do with your job. Stop hoarding your vacation days. They’re not going to fire you, at least not for taking a vacation. Take advantage of the health care plan you don’t understand that costs you $ 7,995 a month and get yourself some therapy. You need it. Needing it doesn’t make you a freak. Go to the gym. Or take a walk. Do something active with your limbs. Spend two hours a day not thinking about work. Don’t eat four pieces of toast and a block of cheese before bed unless you want to wake up feeling like you ate four pieces of toast and a block of cheese. When all else fails, do a face mask. It’s going to be OK. You’re weird, sure, but you’re better than you think. Sometimes you’re even great.

Dave Chappelle Apologizes For Telling Viewers To Give Donald Trump A Chance

Dave Chappelle has one big regret about his appearance on “Saturday Night Live” last November ― and it wasn’t a punchline.

Just days after Donald Trump was elected president, Chappelle went the magnanimous route during his monologue and asked viewers to give the new leader a chance.

But that was then.

On Monday, the comedian expressed regret for his “SNL” remarks at a charity event in New York City.

“I was the first guy on TV to say ‘Give Trump a chance.’ I f―ked up. Sorry,” he said at the Robin Hood Foundation benefit, according to MSNBC’s Willie Geist.

Rewind to Nov. 12, when Chappelle said on “SNL”:

“I’m wishing Donald Trump luck, and I’m going to give him a chance, and we the historically disenfranchised demand that he give us one too.”

Man, that seems like a long time ago.

Hydraulic Press Obliterating A Furby Will Give ’90s Kids Nightmares

Kids of the ’90s look away right now: The toy of your childhood is about to get seriously squashed.

Lauri Vuohensilta, the Finnish factory owner behind the “Hydraulic Press Channel” on YouTube, takes on a Furby in his newest video.

And sadly for the animal-like robotic creature, it’s clear from the outset that there’ll only be one winner:

As the press comes down, you can almost hear the poor electronic critter’s cries of despair.

Vuohensilta posted the clip online Friday, and it garnered more than 150,000 views in the first 12 hours.

Sex-Positive Photos Will Inspire You To Give Your Butt The Love It Deserves

Warning: This article contains many images of butts. Many indeed.

The Fader magazine recently recruited New York-based photographer Caroline Tompkins for a very serious mission: they needed butt photos and lots of them.

The photos were meant for the magazine’s Love & Sex issue, specifically a piece called “What a Butt Wants,” filled with ass-centric wisdom from experts including a personal trainer, an acupuncturist, and a licensed esthetician.

It was 2014 that was playfully dubbed “The Year of the Butt” around the internet, honoring women like Nicki Minaj and Kim Kardashian as its patron saints. Yet many interpreted the designation ― which, in part, correlated to an increase in surgical butt enhancements ― as pop culture appropriating, fetishizing and exploiting black women’s bodies, long criticized for being curvaceous.

Tompkins worked with Fader’s photo director Emily Keegin and fashion editor Shibon Kennedy to create the series, aptly titled “Butts,” featuring a gorgeous melange of derrieres mugging for the camera.

The series breaks with the exoticizing male gaze often employed by mainstream culture. Instead of privileging a “Platonic Ass,” Tompkins pictures a variety of rears from individuals of all ages, races, genders and sizes. Butts are flat and fat, furry and bare, shiny and matte ― the list goes on ― proving that butts are not a hot commodity or a passing trend, but a real, smushy, sexy body part that deserves love and attention.

“[Fader] presented [the series] as one part fashion, one part service (how to make your butt happy), and one part just cool sexy butts,” Tompkins explained to website It’s Nice That. “I’ve been making a lot of personal work about female desire and sex lately, so it was super flattering for this assignment to become an extension of that.”

Tompkins asked friends and people she spotted on Instagram to take part in the shoot, enlisting a total of 12 models to rock 29 looks. “I got a lot of cool butt pics texted/emailed to me that week for sure,” she wrote in an email to The Huffington Post.

“We were mostly looking for variety ― size, shape, color, hair/no hair, etc. We were also really happy to get a couple in the mix, as we didn’t want to ask anyone to get down and dirty in anyone else’s butt unless they were already dating each other, you know?”

For the shoot itself, Tompkins took inspiration from artists including Whitney Hubbs, Collier Schorr, Jo Ann Callis and Harry Callahan, as well as snapshots culled from amateur porn archives.

The resulting spread features butts in pants, butts in skirts, butts in thongs, butts in the buff. There are also butts in leggings, butts in fishnets, butts with tattoos, and butts pressed against glass. A true visual butt buffet, the playful series lives where sexy meets silly, the two juxtaposed like cheeks on a rear.

The images perfectly compliment Fader’s fruitful guide to butt love and maintenance. “My favorite is the last part about buttocks sugaring,” Tompkins added. “That’s all I’m going to say because y’all should check it out. Also, if you’re wondering how we made the butts shiny, it’s mostly baby oil and Vaseline.”

Head to The Fader for more butt play.

Why Kristina From ‘The Bachelor’ Still Thinks Nick Didn’t Give Her A Fair Shot

One of the most universally beloved contestants on Nick Viall’s season of “The Bachelor” was undoubtedly Kristina Schulman. The 24-year-old Kentucky dental hygienist won over Bachelor Nation when she spoke movingly about her childhood in Russia and her eventual adoption and emigration to the United States.

HuffPost’s Here To Make Friends podcast got a chance to speak with Kristina about how she ended up on the show, her take on all the Corinne-Taylor drama, what it was like to have her immigration story air during such a politically-charged moment, what it was like to be on a news blackout during election season, and why she might be taking a permanent break from margaritas.

She also explained that she still believes that Nick didn’t give her a fair chance. “Our time came so late,” she said. “And I’m the type of person to try it all before I really call it quits. And to this day I feel like I’m left with, ‘what if?,’ but I’ve come to terms with it.”

Take a listen below:

Do people love “The Bachelor,” “The Bachelorette” and “Bachelor in Paradise,” or do they love to hate these shows? It’s unclear. But here at “Here to Make Friends,” we both love and love to hate them — and we love to snarkily dissect each episode in vivid detail. Podcast edited by Nick Offenberg.

27 Things To Give A S**t About In 2017

For the last two years, we’ve put together a list of things to stop giving a s**t about in the new year. These lists are lighthearted and fun, meant to give ourselves and our readers permission to lift some weight off of their shoulders and focus on what truly matters.

But given that 2016 was a year dominated by many Americans seemingly not giving a s**t ― about the political process, about the country, and at times about the basic human rights of our fellow citizens ― reminding ourselves and others to care less about things felt off. In 2016, a lack of f**ks given by some only worked against us as a whole.

So this new year, we resolve to care more. We resolve to embrace action in the face of injustice, joy in the face of oppression, and love in the face of hate. Below are 27 things we’ll be giving a s**t about in 2017. Consider getting on board.

1. Organizing, marching and protesting ― even when it feels exhausting and futile.

2. Women’s bodily autonomy. Women have the right to make decisions about their own bodies. Know that in your bones.

3. Surrounding yourself with the people who know you best and adore you most.

4. Fighting the -isms and -phobias: racism, sexism, xenophobia, homophobia. We will never truly achieve “a more perfect union” until these forces of division are eradicated.

5. Authentic female friendships. Nurture old ones and create new ones. These connections are what will take you through dark times.

6. Self-care. As Audre Lorde once said, it can be an “act of political warfare.”

7. Reading. And not just in that I-read-the-headline-or-Wikipedia-post-and-skimmed-the-text way.

8. Your health, both physical and mental. Make that dentist/gyno/therapy appointment you’ve been putting off. (And fight like hell for others’ access to quality health care.)

9. Reducing waste. Our planet really, really, really needs us.

10. Small acts of kindness. Smile at that couple on the subway; make small talk with the nice drunk girls in the bar bathroom line.

11. Constructive disagreement. Let’s start talking ― in a productive way.

12. Eating delicious things. Donuts, fresh produce, pizza, fresh mozzarella, Nutella, extra crispy bacon… the list goes on.

13. Creating space for marginalized voices.

14. Great orgasms… Regardless of whether they come by way of a partner or a seriously excellent vibrator.

15. Learning to channel your frustrations productively. Take an intense spin class or go to yoga or take up painting. Find a way to turn excess unproductive energy into an activity that’s good for the body and soul.

16. Intersectional feminism.

17. Engaging with the political process ― beyond just voting for president. Write letters! Call your representatives! Pay attention to local elections!

18. Sacred spaces. Find yours, whatever “sacred” may mean to you. Everyone needs a sanctuary.

19. Showing the young people in your life that there’s no one way to be feminine or masculine.

20. Expressing your opinion without fear. Own your point of view, and share it.

21. Taking your vacation days. Lord knows we all may need a few breaks over the next year.

22. Education. Comprehensive, accessible, public education.

23. Empathy. A little can go a long way.

24. Facts. They still matter.

25. Words. They do too.

26. Joy.

27. Love.

This Woman Found A Festive Way To Give Her Wedding Dress A Second Life

For 26 years, Tess Heidelberger’s wedding dress was sitting in a dusty box in her basement next to her Christmas decorations.

“I thought, ‘What a waste,’” she told The Huffington Post. “My basic Christmas tree skirt was on the top of the box of Christmas decorations and that’s when I got the idea to put the two of them together.”

Tess, who lives in Mauldin, South Carolina, purchased the dress in 1989 so it had all the hallmarks of 80s bridal style ― like those signature puffy sleeves. She got married the following year in 1990.

Her daughters had no interest in wearing it themselves (they felt it was too dated), so there were no objections to Tess turning the dress into an art project.

She grabbed a pair of scissors, her hot glue gun and got to work. All she needed to buy was a plain Christmas tree skirt (to put underneath the dress fabric) and some pretty ribbon to cover the glue.

“I laid out my wedding dress and cut the skirt off the dress ― the first cut is the hardest!” Tess explained to HuffPost. “Then I cut off any details on the dress, like appliqués, bows and beading. Then I pinned the wedding dress skirt on the plain Christmas tree skirt until I liked the way it looked. Then I just hot glued it in place and I added the extra appliqués I cut out earlier.”

In all, it only took Tess an hour to complete. She was very pleased with the finished product.

“I love the way it looks!” she said “I’m very sentimental so now every Christmas I can be reminded of our special day!”

Let’s Give This Dude A Tony For His ‘Hamilton’-Inspired Wedding Speech

When Matt Rotner was tasked with giving a speech at his sister’s wedding, he was not about to throw away his shot.

Instead of giving some boring old speech, Matt blew everyone away with a surprise performance inspired by the hit Broadway musical “Hamilton” at his sister Jenna’s wedding to Ross Drucker at the Beverly Hills Hotel on Saturday.

He re-wrote the words to “Alexander Hamilton,” the opening song from the show, tailoring them to fit the details of the bride and groom’s love story.

According to Matt, the Rotner family shares a love of Broadway shows and saw “Hamilton” together in October 2015 ― just a few weeks after Ross and Jenna got engaged. After watching the opening number, Matt knew he had found the inspiration for his speech.

“I turned to my mom and said, ‘Well, I know exactly what I’m doing for the wedding,’” he told The Huffington Post. “I thought, ‘Hey, I might not be able to sing well anymore, but I know I can write these rhymes and put on one hell of a show.’”

Below, a sample of the well-crafted lyrics Matt penned for the occasion:

How does a Met fan, golfer, Long Island boy, an accountant, dropped right in the meltin’ pot. Yes, New York City, ain’t it pretty, the fancy lights and shows. Go meet this Jew from California ― you know where this story goes?

Yes, Jenna Rotner, the oldest daughter of my father. Moved to The Big Apple with some pressure from her mother said time to be a wife. Said this year you start your life. Israeli mothers, a sharper edge than any knife.

Matt first spent time gathering the information he needed to write the lyrics, namely the particulars of the bride and groom’s “how we met” story, which began on JDate in New York City. In July, Matt started writing the rhymes on the train while commuting to and from work.

Throughout the process, Matt made sure to keep his plans a secret from the bride and groom.

“I told Jenna I had something very special planned and I have been hyping it up to her and Ross for the last year, but I never gave her an inkling of what it could be,” he told HuffPost.

All of Matt’s dedication paid off when he saw the look on his sister’s face during the performance.

“When the first first few notes of the track hit after my intro, I saw her face and she was in shock,” he said. “I’ll never forget her reaction and I’m so happy it was caught on camera.”

Growing up, Matt, Jenna and their little sister Maddison would perform musical numbers together at family parties, weddings, birthdays ― you name it.

“It was my first time I really ever did something like that without my sisters by my side, so everyone was kind of dumbfounded when it was all said and done that I did that alone,” he said.

Watch the Tony-award-worthy speech, shot by Vidicam Productions, above.

Donald Trump Just Won’t Give Up His Birther Fantasy In Colbert Interview

Donald Trump has been coming under fire for refusing to distance himself from the “birther” movement he helped fuel, which claims President Barack Obama wasn’t born in the United States.  On Tuesday night’s “Late Show,” host Stephen Colbert offered the GOP frontrunner a chance to put the question behind him once and for all.

“I’m going to throw you a big fat meatball for you to hit out of the park right now,” Colbert said. “This is the last time you’ll ever have to address this question if you hit the ball.”

“I want to hear this one,” Trump said.

“Barack Obama, born in the United States?” Colbert asked.

When Trump hesitated, Colbert tempted him with the “meatball.”

“It’s a meatball, it’s hanging out there,” Colbert said, mimicking a batter’s home-run swing. “Right there — c’mon.”

But for Trump, it was a swing and a miss.

“I don’t talk about that anymore,” he said.

“You don’t talk about it?” Colbert asked.

Trump said he would rather talk about jobs and veterans, but Colbert cut him off.

“The meatball is now being dragged down subway steps by a rat,” Colbert said, referring to the now-famous pizza-stealing rat. “You missed the meatball.”

The response is in line with what Trump offered on Sunday to a similar question on “Meet the Press.”

“I just don’t want to discuss it,” Trump told host Chuck Todd, calling it a “long, complex issue.”

After taping his Colbert appearance, Trump tweeted that the birther movement began with Hillary Clinton:

FactCheck.org reports that while the issue was raised by diehard Clinton supporters in 2008, there is nothing to link Clinton, her campaign or her staff to the issue.

Trump is set to appear on national TV again on Sunday on “60 Minutes.”

You probably know Jon Bon Jovi as the larger-than-life rock star whose vocals have filled stadiums. But we betcha didn’t know he’s actually pretty darn good at Chinese, too.

(Or at least singing in Chinese).

Yes, the 53-year-old artist sang Teresa Teng’s popular ballad, “Yue Liang Dai Biao Wo De Xin,” or “The Moon Represents My Heart.” The singer, who recorded the song for Chinese Valentine’s Day — which took place last week — manages to sing it beautifully in Mandarin, while somehow maintaining his very recognizable Bon Jovi flair.

Listen to the artist get in touch with his softer side and sing an emotional rendition of the song. Then, notice that your jaw has probably dropped to the floor because you were unaware he was capable of singing in Chinese.

Seriously, what can’t he do?

Judge Orders Bill Cosby To Give Sworn Deposition In Lawsuit

LOS ANGELES, Aug 5 (Reuters) – U.S. comedian Bill Cosby has been ordered to give a sworn deposition in a lawsuit alleging he sexually abused a 15-year-old girl at the Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles in 1974.

The order, entered by a Los Angeles Superior Court judge on Tuesday and made public on Wednesday, states that Cosby will submit to questions under oath from the lawyer of his accuser, Judy Huth, on Oct. 9, and that she will answer questions from his attorneys on Oct. 15.

Cosby’s lawyers had sought to compel Huth to give her deposition before the comedian, but the judge sided with Huth in requiring Cosby to go first. (Reporting by Steve Gorman; Editing by Sandra Maler)

Why We Are Able to Give Advice But Not Take Our Own

Many grow up and have grown up in a society where we are patiently (or impatiently) waiting for someone to save us. What exactly we’re being saved from is never quite clear, but it is well-known that whatever it is- we must be saved from it. And in our salvation we are hereby granted some magical ability to be forever absolved of any pain — or so you would think.

Here’s the problem: Not recognizing that you are your own savior open the doors wide for self-destruction.

You lead your life constantly awaiting a magical moment, negating the fact that along the way you could actually be doing yourself more harm than help. We give advice to others and we attempt to be their saviors, but there is no way to save someone else. You can try to help someone, but only if that person is open to being helped, and only if they’re willing to change and step up to the plate and be their own salvation. Still, we must place a mirror in front of ourselves and see that in actuality we are no different than those we try so hard to care for, and that we too need caring, love, attention.

Of course everyone would love to be the world’s superhero, but the reality is, you can’t always be. Try to be your own Wonder Woman, and your own Superman. Save yourself.

How to Give the Perfect Bridal Shower Gift

Perfect Shower Gift Elizabeth Rider

This post originally appeared on ElizabethRider.com.

Wedding season brings (bridal) shower season and it’s time to break free from the norm and shower your bride with the best gift at the party.

One of my favorite things to shower on a bride-to-be is a fun open basket of goodies that she’ll love to use but probably wouldn’t or couldn’t buy herself. We tend to think that gifts have to be wrapped and concealed, but I think an open basket to be a fun twist on traditional shower gifts.

To give the perfect bridal shower gift, I suggest that you pick a theme centered around what she loves and/or wants to learn. Once you have your theme, include your favorites related to the genre of your gift to represent your personal taste and give her something she will love.

The basket pictured here is all about food and my bride has one year left at university, so I included a to-go french press mug for the on-the-go lady. This style is perfect for both tea and coffee, so I included both in the basket as well. Some of my most-loved gourmet treats along with my favorite book for a newbie cook rounded out this basket perfectly.

A few more theme ideas: bath/spa, garden, camping/outdoor, candle/scents, cocktail, wine, spices, movie-lover, honeymoon, regional/location-based. This concept of course works well for a baby shower, too.

Here are my thoughts about what to include in your basket. Make sure that everything is:

  • Something she will use! I like to include things that I personally love and use, but make sure she will too. For instance, if she doesn’t bake, don’t give her cookie cutters and a rolling pin.
  • Fresh and not close to an expiration date. Check all food product expiration dates.
  • Not related to the diet industry. Even if the latest health & wellness book is your favorite new obsession, double check that you’re not accidentally sending a “diet” message to the blushing bride.
  • Something a little fancier than the every day commodity. Look for something that’s a step up from what she would buy herself, like a fancy chocolate bar that she can share with her groom.
  • Relevant. Check her registry for things to include, too.

A few more ideas for items to include:

  • Any book she would love. For the food genre, How To Cook Without A Book by Pam Anderson is my absolute favorite to give to a newer cook who wants to become more proficient in the kitchen. If the bride is already a kitchen all-star, then I include a specialty food book like Healing Spices by Bharat B. Aggarwal PhD.
  • A bottle of organic wine and a dark chocolate bar.
  • High-quality olive oil with a specialty vinegar.
  • A short bouquet of fresh flowers in a mason jar.
  • Your favorite spice blends.
  • A jar of homemade granola.
  • A beautiful picture frame with a shot of you and the bride.
  • A gift card to a local restaurant, spa, or one of her favorite stores.

There really are no rules to this, but a few other things to consider:

  • It’s fun to include a few local items to represent where you live and support the local economy.
  • Choose a fun basket or box that she can display and use, it’s part of the gift, too! I got this one at World Market in Bozeman. A wicker basket works great, too.
  • I also include a gift receipt at the very bottom of the basket, because brides tend to get doubles.
  • If you need help propping things up in the basket, use clean toilet paper or paper towel rolls wrapped in pretty gift tissue paper to prop things up in the back.

Happy Showering!

Almost Going to Jail Taught Me How to Give!

I have learned about giving through the experience of receiving. There have been a lot of people in my life that gave to me, when they didn’t have to, when there wasn’t anything in it for them.

I haven’t always known how to give in my life, I spent a lot of it, not knowing how to give love, not knowing how to give my gifts and talents not knowing I had anything to give.
I learned slowly from a few very special people in my life how to give.

My teachers come to mind. I’ve never really had a relationship with my father, he’s always seemed like a ghost, somewhere out there, but just out of my reach.

I think subconsciously I created a lot of my teachers to be men, strong healthy role models of the healthy masculine to heal the old father wound. They were all available, attentive and loving.

I needed that. It has been very healing for me.

I ran away from home as a really young teenager and moved to Hawaii. I never knew there were people out there that wanted to help me just because, just to help, when I ran away that wasn’t my experience. Everyone wanted something.

Before I found my calling God sent me an angel named Sean, I was struggling and had gotten into some trouble with the law, and I honestly didn’t know what was going to happen. Out of desperation, fear and intense emotional pain I started going anywhere spiritual!

I met Sean in a spiritual community, he took me under his wing.

Every time I went to court it was so demeaning and scary, everyone treated me like I was already guilty, but not Sean, he was an amazing loving teacher. He taught me how to sit with people, how to love them and be there for them when things got hard.

I remember telling him, I’m so scared, I don’t know if I’m going to jail! I have no idea what I could do to help another person right now!

He would say “Yeah just come with me, we’re all going to go sit and be with some people who are suffering, just talk from your heart and give them what you can in the way of love.”

I thought what’s wrong with him! Doesn’t he see I’m messed up! Doesn’t he see I’m the one that needs help!?

But I just kept showing up whenever there was an opportunity to talk with someone struggling with cancer, or a teenage girl who had been molested. I just showed up and tried to help.
It changed everything, I just couldn’t wait until Sean and our little team of helpers went out to be with another hurting soul. I suddenly felt I wasn’t an awful person, I wasn’t so lost.
It gave me a reason to live again.

When I first met Sean I was so worried about the case that I spent hours of many days crying on my bathroom floor, then Sean would call and say “Hey what are you doing, wanna sit with some hurting folks?”

I mean, I thought it couldn’t be any worse than sitting on my bathroom floor crying. That gift he gave me of being able to give love to another soul was like medicine for my spirit.

I began to feel like, Hey Ama, you might be able to really help people! And you Really love it!!!”
I started thinking less and less about my situation and more and more about the next time I could get back out there with Sean and the team!

A seed was planted in my soul.

I learned from Sean that no matter how much you are hurting inside, how dark things get, you can still give, that in fact that IS the medicine that will give you the will to live again! To bring meaning back into your life! That’s what happened to me.

I found that in life you can make mistakes and lose everything and in losing can be great winning.

I ended up taking a plea that the DA offered in my case, I was just too terrified to go to trial and gamble and maybe win but maybe lose.

I was on probation for awhile, lost all my money spending thousands of dollars defending myself and in fees.

I lost a lot of friends that couldn’t handle the intensity of my situation. But I wasn’t as focused on me and my situation anymore, I had found this new world of giving and being of service, and I couldn’t get enough!!!

I remember going to endless court hearings thinking, I can’t wait to get out of here and go sit with someone that’s hurting! It’s the only thing that saved me and kept me from the deepest despair and from giving up.

I kept going out with Sean and the team. I started to realize when I was sitting with hurting ones, I would get information about them, I had a gift, I could tell what was going to happen or what had happened to them before.

I would touch them on the hand or their head and they would start to feel better. I found that I knew how to talk with them and somehow they would be feeling better and filled with hope after we talked.

I began to find my calling as a healer.

The worst thing that I thought had ever happened to me, turned out to lead me to the best thing that ever happened… finding my gifts and my calling…. and the joy of being of service and giving!

That experience of receiving unconditional love from Sean taught me not to judge people too harshly, as you never know their story and how they got to be where they’re at.
Sean knew my situation but he chose to see something good in me, he chose to see that I had something to offer and I started to believe him!

He didn’t talk to me about giving, he made me go out and do it!

It was extraordinary! Sean taught me that the way to heal is to GIVE!

It was the most amazing thing, at my lowest point, I was asked to serve another human being and it healed MY hurting soul!

Yeah, I’ve learned a lot from my teachers. I’ve learned how to give, really give and the absolute joy that comes from giving is addictive!

Once you reach out to help another person, no matter what is going on for you in your life, you’ll never stop, and you’ll always know how to find your way back to yourself by reaching out and finding someone that needs your help. You’ll find that you’ll get hooked on that feeling of love and giving and you’ll never turn back!! I didn’t!

10 Tools to Help You Give Without Getting Drained

In our society, where we have a tendency to constantly be in a state of “go go go” it can be a real challenge to find the energy to give anymore without feeling stressed, tired, exhausted and just flat out, well, drained.

Maybe it’s after a long day of work and you find yourself getting a call from a family member with another problem and you just don’t have the energy to deal with it. Or maybe it’s struggling to have patience with that one difficult customer.

Regardless of the exact scenario, these situations can all be really challenging. If we don’t take time out of our day to really tune into ourselves and give ourselves some good ol’ self-care, we can find ourselves in this constant place of being drained and stressed out. And frankly, that’s not good for you or anyone around you.

So here are 10 simple tools that can help you give without feeling drained:

1. Spend time in nature. Go out and soak up some sun, breathe in the fresh air, walk barefoot in the grass, and marvel in the blissful sound of birds chirping.

2. Exercise! When we strengthen our bodies, we also strengthen our entire being. So go for a run, do some yoga, or hit up the gym.

3. Eat well. Are you finding yourself always in a hurry and rushing over to McDonald’s? Well if you really want to replenish yourself so you’re not drained and stressed out all the time, then find some alternative foods to eat that are much nutritious for you. Eat some fruit and veggies. Have a salad. Maybe even try out going paleo, vegan or gluten free. Find food that energizes you and makes you feel like you’re at your optimal health.

4. Get enough sleep. One of the most important factors of our mental health and overall well-being is the amount and quality of sleep we get each night. After all, our brains can’t function optimally if we don’t give it a chance to rest! The general rule of thumb is to shoot for somewhere between 7 to 9 hours each night, depending on what your body needs.

5. Support yourself. We can’t really support others, nor can we fully receive support from others, if we don’t support ourselves. So support yourself in the work you do by praising yourself for a job well done, rather than be super critical about it not being “good enough.” Support yourself in relationships by being in relationships with people who are kind, loyal, and respectful of you.

6. Meditate — often. Enough said.

7. Breathe! When we’re stressed and worn out, we habitually forget to breathe. So bring everything back to the breath and do it often! Take deep breaths and then let it all out.

8. Do things that light you up. Be sure that you’re taking time each week (or even day) to do things that you really truly enjoy doing. Do what you feel passionate about. Take time to write, take photos, grow a garden, take your dog for a walk, dance… do whatever helps bring more fun to your life and energizes you.

9. Bring passion into what you do. While it is important to do things that you already feel passionate about, it’s also important to put forth the effort to bring passion into what you do already. Bring passion into regular exercise routine, bring passion into your not-quite-dream-job, and bring passion into your new diet. When we bring passion into all aspects of our life, we can then find ourselves much happier — which supplies us with plenty of joy and love to share with others.

10. Give yourself some alone time. While it can be easy with our busy lives to always be socializing and doing things with others, it is also important to give yourself some “me” time to do whatever with yourself. Take some time to yourself to journal, read, or reflect on your day. Take some time to go someplace by yourself so you have space to deal completely with your own thoughts, emotions, and overall experience. Allow yourself to take some moments to stop and look within — for it is within that our endless supply of love dwells.

Oscar Plan to Give All Awards to Beyoncé to Prevent Kanye ProtWests

The Oscar awards committee today announced controversial new plans to give all future awards to singer Beyoncé Knowles in an attempt to stop rapper Kanye West from storming the stage.

The sight of Kanye, producer of such international hits as “Jesus Walks” and “Gold Digger”, helping himself to the podium steps has become a common sight in recent years and has been dubbed ProtWests or ProtWesting by satirists with too much time on their hands.

A spokesperson for the committee told us, “I think it’s become obvious that Kanye knows best; I mean take the Grammys. Awarding the prize to a genial newcomer like Beck who barely has thirty years in the music industry instead of Beyoncé was just unforgivable and, frankly the totally impartial committee should have known better. As should E! News for branding the microphones that they paid for with their own money.”

“Originally we thought that awarding statues to recipients based on a consensus from a large and diverse group of industry professionals was pretty fair, but then Kanye brought to our attention that this just didn’t sit well with him.”

Despite Ms. Knowles, 34, not actually doing anything to qualify for the movie industry’s highest award this year, a source close to Mr. West made it clear that “they shouldn’t let that stop them, or buddy, Kanye will.”

Other organizations said to be considering similar moves are the SAG Awards, The Producers Guild and the Nobel Peace Prize Committee. A spokesperson for the latter told us, “We considered other moves to prevent Kanye protWesting us, such as large fences around the stage with really big spikes, armed guards or just not inviting him to anything with a statue, but we think that in the long run just giving all the awards to Beyoncé will work out better.”

Bill Nye Says ‘Give A F**k’ About Climate Change Instead Of Deflategate

Bill Nye is weighing in on Deflategate again, but this time he has a few props and a message to share about something far more important.

New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick claimed atmospheric conditions and temperature changes could have caused footballs to lose air pressure during the team’s AFC Championship win over the Indianapolis Colts.

On Sunday, Nye said taking that much air out of a ball would require an inflation needle. But in a new video posted on Funny or Die, The Science Guy declared that “one test is worth 1,000 expert opinions,” and put some footballs into a fridge set to 51 degrees, or the temperature at the Jan. 18 game.

That’s where the video takes a very different turn.

“While we’re all obsessed with Deflategate, let’s keep in mind that there’s something about which you should give a fuck,” Nye said. “Yes, like Tom Brady, the world is getting hotter and hotter, and you know why? Because we humans are pumping carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.”

Nye then began listing things that contribute to climate change — including long-winded Deflategate press conferences — and followed that up with a rallying cry.

“You should vote for congressmen and senators that appreciate the threat of climate change and the rate at which the world is getting warmer, so that we can preserve the earth for humankind for generations to come,” Nye said.

Oh, and about those balls…

Nye took one out of the fridge, gave it a squeeze, pronounced it “pretty much the same,” and said “the Patriots probably bent the rules a little bit.”

Nye, who lived in Seattle for a number of years, ended the video with a message that’s bound to rankle the New England faithful: “Go Seahawks!”

How to Give Yourself a Fresh Start

It’s a few days into the new year, but life is already starting to taste stale. Stale as the lone gallon of milk still sitting in your fridge, and stale as the air in your living room from the aftermath of your New Year’s Eve party.

Even your New Year’s resolutions are sounding stale. They seemed nothing but brilliant when you first pounded them out on your laptop. Now you wish you could eat the words because you’re feeling embarrassed, naïve and outed. Everyone knows about them, and everyone will know when you fail.

What you need is a fresh start. But how?

First, ease off on yourself. Forget about jumping on the bandwagon and feeling pressured to start something new or something big. You need to first spend the time letting go of things that no longer serve you. Until you do so, you cannot give yourself a new beginning.

Secondly, just because a date on a calendar changed doesn’t mean you should change instantly. You have years of parental, cultural and other institutional programming to sort through. Don’t discount their influence on your own values.

It also doesn’t happen the moment when you decide to write down a bunch of resolutions. Resolutions are wishcraft disguised as goals, no matter how SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, time-bound) they may sound.

In case you are thinking it will be different this time, slide open that desk drawer and see how many ghosts of New Year’s resolutions past haunt you.

You failed because you are repeating a pattern.

Patterns are accumulations of unhealthy habits that force you into autopilot. Bad habits act as mental prisons. They are difficult to break free, and you may find yourself serving a long “prison” sentence.

But you can make a “prison break.” And who else is best to teach us about a prison break than Andy Dufresne?

If you’ve never seen The Shawshank Redemption, you probably won’t recognize the main character from the movie. Andy was an innocent man who, after having been accused of murdering his wife and her lover, was sentenced to life in prison. Andy’s exceptional ability to give himself a mental fresh start after experiencing repeated setbacks and injustices makes for a good case study. See if you can apply these lessons to your life.

1. “You Get Busy Living or You Get Busy Dying.”
The first step in giving yourself a fresh start is to decide if you want to “get busy living or get busy dying.” Think of it as your “Go/No Go” decision tool. You don’t need the perfect situation or permission from anyone else. It starts when you make up your mind to do it.

2. Take One Bold Risk.

2015-01-09-bold2.jpg

After he overheard a prison guard complain about a topic he knew well, Andy offered a solution, a bold move that nearly got him flung off the roof. But that move was a turning point. It shifted his relationship with other inmates and the guards, and it shifted something in him.

“We sat and drank with the sun over our shoulders and felt like free men.” [Red]

A bold risk will snap you out of your rut like a swim in an icy lake. Take the plunge.

3. Change Perceptions.
Often times a fresh start is difficult because of your history with the people whom you regularly interact with. You might feel boxed in and expected to behave a certain way.

Andy used his knowledge as a banker to change his relationship with the guards. He shifted their perception of him from that of a prisoner to someone who was their equal.

“Dekins just looked at him a second… and he actually shook Andy’s hand. Shook his hand! I near soiled myself.” [Brooks]

Create a shift by changing your response to a given situation from what others normally expect of you. Adopt a new manner of speaking that bridges understanding and mutual respect.

4. Persist Beyond the Point of Failure.

2015-01-09-persist.jpg

Work with your constraints. Don’t fight them. In Andy’s case, powerful forces repeatedly worked against him: the warden, the guards, solitary confinement, multiple beatings, and 500 yards of raw sewage to wade through before he broke free. Despite the insurmountable odds, he persisted. All he carried in his arsenal was a tiny rock hammer and hope.

“There are places in this world that aren’t made out of stone. There’s something inside they can’t get to, that they can’t touch. That’s yours.” [Andy]

5. When You Can’t Change the Scenery, Search Hard for Beauty.
Know that it’s going to get tough before it gets easy. Anticipate this. When you hit that point, you will need to dig deep for a reason to continue. And if you come up empty, you will need to search for a little piece of beauty in that joyless place. For Andy, that meant lifting himself and everyone in the prison yard through the power of music.

“It was like some beautiful bird flapped into our drab little cage and made those walls dissolve away, and for the briefest of moments, every last man in Shawshank felt free.” [Red]

6. Absolve Yourself of Mistakes.

2015-01-09-forgive.jpg

At some point, you will be tempted to question or beat yourself up. When this happens, know that the person you are today will always know more than the self of yesterday. Until you can forgive yourself for your mistakes, you will be your own worse enemy — your own jailer.

“I look back on the way I was then: a young, stupid kid…I want to try to talk some sense to him, tell him the way things are. But I can’t. That kid’s long gone.” [Red]

After all the work you do, what if you still fail? That is always a real possibility. Know that failure is nothing more than a step in the learning process. You simply start again. As Oprah Winfrey wisely noted, “Right now, no matter where you are, you are a single choice away from a new beginning.”

Anatomy of a 16-Year Wedding Anniversary Present (or What Not to Give Your Wife)

Sugar Daddy (aka the husband who is currently sleeping on the couch): “I don’t want to talk about it — I’m sorry I made a mistake. I bought you a practical gift. I thought you would like it, I thought you would think it was cute I thought you would think it was warm. And comfortable like our relationship”

Me: “So basically what you are saying is that — after 16 years of marriage — you think the best gift to give me are two pillows and a sheet?”

Sugar Daddy ( aka the husband who is currently sleeping on the couch): “It’s not a sheet it’s a set of flannel sheets and they were expensive.”

Me: “Really — are you really trying to defend your flannel sheets?”

Sugar Daddy ( aka the husband who is currently sleeping on the couch): “No I knew it was bad.”

Me: “So why the hell did you get it for me — you know I am not all about needing a Harry Winston necklace — but getting two pillows and a sheet makes me think that I have lowered the bar so low that you think it is acceptable to get me a gift that is really more for the house and for you than for me. We both sleep in the bed so really this is a gift for you. Nothing abut this gift says : ‘I love you, I still think you are hot, I cherish you.’ To me this gift says, ‘You are as exciting to me as a broomstick. So… I think you should take your pillows and sheets and get your own bed and sleep someplace else.”

Sugar Daddy ( aka the husband who is currently sleeping on the couch): “Oh c’mon I looked at all the things and went past the jewelry store and I even looked for a doll for you.”

Me: “So — you couldn’t find ANYTHING except for sensible pillows and sheets to show me how much you love me???”

I am ashamed to have to write this post — but I’m doing it for all those wives who get HORRIBLE ANNIVERSARY PRESENTS to try and figure out what goes on inside the mind of the married man. So please enlighten me.

Sugar Daddy ( aka the husband who is currently sleeping on the couch): “You said not to spend a lot of money — in fact you said not to buy you anything.”

Me: “YOU KNOW you should never listen to what I say.”

Sugar Daddy ( aka the husband who is currently sleeping on the couch): “I never learn.”

Me: “And of all the things you saw — your thought was — Oh I’ll pass on the candle and the jewelry and make a beeline for the home goods section?! Please explain yourself.”

Sugar Daddy ( aka the husband who is currently sleeping on the couch): “It was just a lack of imagination and romance.”

Me:” It makes me feel like you see me as a scullery maid. First of all the sheets you got — they are not even my STYLE.”

Sugar Daddy ( aka the husband who is currently sleeping on the couch): “I thought they were cute and warm.”

Me: “And how does this gift encapsulate 16 years of marriage — after 16 years you see me as someone who would love getting pillows and a sheet? what does this say about what you think of me and the years we have spent together? You see me at my finest when my eyes are closed ad my mouth is shut — asleep in bed?”

Sugar Daddy ( aka the husband who is currently sleeping on the couch): “It was dumb, what can I say. I just had no imagination, I didn’t see anything I liked, jewelry seemed superfluous, you have jewelry… I don’t know.”

Me: “And you didn’t think this would read as totally unromantic?”

Sugar Daddy ( aka the husband who is currently sleeping on the couch) : “I knew it was, I don’t know why I did it, I couldn’t think of anything.”

Me: “Why would a husband do this to his wife?”

Sugar Daddy ( aka the husband who is currently sleeping on the couch): “I did never learn that being practical when it comes to gifts is BAD. I should’ve gotten you something that would make you feel special — which is what I wanted to do with the pillows and sheets.”

Me: “How would pillows and sheets makes me feel special?”

Sugar Daddy ( aka the husband who is currently sleeping on the couch): “Because it was given from my heart — I wanted to give you something from my heart , I didn’t have any ideas what to get you.”

Me: “A pillow and sheets is from your heart — I don’t get it?”

Sugar Daddy ( aka the husband who is currently sleeping on the couch): “I though t it was something we needed and I thought you would like it even though it wasn’t romantic. I’m sorry I wish I could take it back. Now it’s too late.”

Me: To me this says — you have no idea who I am or what I like.”

Sugar Daddy ( aka the husband who is currently sleeping on the couch): “It just seemed like buying you an expensive gift would’ve been just to get you a gift — it still wouldn’t have meant anymore. It would have been a waste of money to buy you a necklace.”

Me: “That’s what anniversaries are for — to splurge and get something you wouldn’t get on an average shopping trip to the mall. YOU messed up buddy big time. To me this says — I am not of value — I am not worth the splurge… I am a sensible pillow and sheets kind of wife.”

Gifts that Give: How to Shop for a Cause This Holiday Season

2014-12-18-photo4.JPG

Americans spend over 250 billion dollars annually on fashion. Take a moment to let that sink in, and read that statistic again. Yup, I said 250 billion. As a philanthropist and a firm believer in conscious consumerism, I am always thinking about how to create “products with a purpose” that give twice.

It is my belief, that by empowering the consumer to give back by encouraging them to feel a constant and engaging connection to giving, that the birth of a new world, where our dollars can act as a catalyst to accomplish the change we want to see in the world will be possible. After all, by encouraging money over involvement, we are perpetuating the notion that the problem, be it poverty or child soldiers, is far away, and we can absolve ourselves of any responsibility by signing checks.

With that said, since supporting important causes can be easy to forget amid the hustle and bustle of shopping during the holiday season, I decided to talk all about “gifts that give” on my latest NBC style segment on the Kerri-lee Mayland show. After all, I’ve said it before and ill say it again: it’s better to give than to receive. And what better time to tap into your altruistic spirit than the holidays? Here are some suggestions of holiday gift ideas that give twice:

Primus Goes All ‘Willy Wonka’ To Give Fans A Chance To Win Tickets For Life

Primus is bringing all your “Willy Wonka” dreams to life.

The band, which is known for their insane cover of “The Devil Went Down To Georgia” and creating the original “South Park” theme, has a new LP dropping Tuesday, Oct. 21, and to celebrate they’re giving fans a chance to win tickets for life, according to Rolling Stone.

Instead of golden tickets, fans will be given the chance to find golden vinyl records mixed in with the “Primus and the Chocolate Factory with the Fungi Ensemble” albums. You can see the chocolate-colored records being made in the band’s “Willy Wonka”-style video above.

The album marks the first time since 1995 that the band’s original lineup has put out an LP together. For those who can’t wait for Tuesday, The New York Times has a streamable version available now.

The chance to win free tickets for life is pretty incredible, but to keep things in perspective Primus fans should really do their best to remember the words of Willy Wonka: “Don’t forget what happened to the man who suddenly got everything he always wanted. He lived happily ever after.”

Kid President And Grover Remind Us We’re All Good People Who Have Something To Give

Kid President, with the help of his furry blue friend Grover, is here to give you and everyone you know a rousing pep talk about how we all can make a positive impact in the lives of others.

“Helping the people around you … It’s easier than you think,” the duo said in a video posted on SoulPancake’s YouTube channel on Oct. 10. “You don’t have to have all the answers; you don’t have to be super strong. You just got to show up … You’re never too small, or too blue and furry, to make a big difference.”

Kid President, also known as 10-year-old Robby Novak, and Sesame Street’s Grover are raising awareness about Socktober, an initiative that encourages everyone — adults and kids alike — to collect and distribute socks (and other basic essentials) to the estimated 600,000 people who are homeless in the United States.

“Together, we can change everything,” Grover says in the video, later quipping, “People who make the world better for other people are some of the best people.”

Plus, changing the world is a lot more fun with friends.

Give Them an “E” For Effort

Despite what some people think, storytelling is very much an acquired skill. Not everyone does a good job of it. Some folks are incapable of even launching a narrative.

How one develops a story and delivers it to an audience are key components to its dramatic success. If a playwright is sure of his artistic vision and has complete artistic control over his product, there’s a strong chance that he will be able to shape a compelling narrative.

When charismatic monologists such as Martin Dockery, Dan Hoyle, Mike Daisey and Ann Randolph perform their own material, audiences react with vociferous applause and laughter. Consider these clips of slam poet Taylor Mali performing at the Bowery Poetry Club and speaking to attendees at the 2013 Big Ideas Fest in Half Moon Bay, California.

When writing for the stage, a playwright has any number of tools at his disposal.

  • If, while working with a skilled director, he can sculpt and shape his narrative into a format that makes audiences lean in, eager to catch every word he has written, he will most probably have a hit on his hands.
  • Conversely, if his technique relies too heavily on structural gimmicks, he might end up using them to beat his characters and plot twists like a dead horse.

Two recent Bay area premieres demonstrated what can happen when carefully conceived evenings of storytelling fail to reach a critical temperature. While each play was obviously crafted with great care and love (and included very specific geographical references), in the final analysis these productions only earned an “E” for effort.

* * * * * * * * * *

Many writers love to do research. Not only does it lead to new thoughts and discoveries, it offers their fertile minds plenty of chances to wallow in new possibilities. Too much research, however, can lead to a situation wherein a writer must choose which ideas and characters to cut from his narrative. In most cases, they end up being his most cherished material.

Commissioned by the Shotgun Players, Daylighting: The Berkeley Stories Project is the third installment in the Berkeley theatre company’s Community Stories Project. Having relocated from San Francisco to Berkeley, playwright Dan Wolf and director Rebecca Novick were eager to explore the spirit of contemporary Berkeley and see how the city has changed in recent years.

Both artists spent three years collecting stories about Berkeley from its residents, using the story circle model developed by the Cornerstone Theatre Company as their technique for gathering material. As Novick explains:

“Dan had hundreds of hours of recordings, piles of notes, and more suggestions than he could handle. We began to wonder if this was a play at all. Was it a series of documentaries or just a project we could keep doing forever? How do you tell the story of a place? It turns out you can only do that by telling the story of a few people who live there.”

2014-07-15-daylighting1.jpg

Tim Redmond (Tim) and Juan Amador (Neighbor)
in a scene from Daylighting (Photo by: Pak Han)

Identifying which stories have the most dramatic viability and trying to form them into a continuing narrative takes a great deal of skill and imagination. Wolf describes his inspiration for the play as follows:

Daylighting is a love poem, a gut check, and a challenge that asks us: What is Berkeley today? Who lives here? Why did we come and why do we stay? How can the most progressive place on earth remain connected to the past without losing its way in the future?

The play started in the dirt in my backyard, between layers of sediment and weeds and fallen leaves. It came to me in the night, amidst the sounds of West Berkeley trains and thumping truck subwoofers. It emerged from the fog in the form of all the spirits that make this city special. As I crawled around on my hands and knees, pulling out the ivy that was invading my garden, the action of pulling the long vines got me thinking about all the people who had battled the ivy before me. It made me think about the native people who once worked this land and the Spanish settlers who came after them. About the creation of a city from two distinct communities and how those ghosts still haunt us today.”

2014-07-15-daylighting2.jpg

Christina Chu (Tessa), Brit Frazier (Bee), and Juan Amador
(Manuel) in a scene from Daylighting (Photo by: Pak Han)

Unfortunately, the finished product feels less like a dramatic tapestry and more like a series of lamely strung-together vignettes that have been arranged like a carefully sorted pile of index cards. The protagonist is a young woman named Bee (Brit Frazier) who is graduating from high school and planning to leave for the East Coast (where she has a scholarship to attend NYU). Meanwhile, her grandfather, James (Donald Lacy), has seized the opportunity to sell his house while the market is strong.

As the play unfolds, the audience meets a variety of characters ranging from Bee’s homeless, drug-addicted mother to her grandfather’s new neighbors, Tim (Tim Redmond) and Celia (Karina Gutierrez); from old friends and acquaintances of her grandfather’s — such as his close confidante, Suzy (Mary Baird) – to Fred (Paul Loomis), a volatile former friend with whom James now refuses to speak.

2014-07-15-daylighting3.jpg

a scene from Daylighting (Photo by: Pak Han)

Others in Shotgun’s ensemble include Christina Chu and Megan Schirle. Abhi Kris has a nice scene as a cab driver who feels he must work night shifts in order to avoid bringing shame on his family.

While one can applaud Daylighting as a community outreach project, the sad truth is that Wolf’s play lacks electricity. Its moments of urgency rarely ring true. Most of its characters seem as confused to have been dropped onstage as the audience that greets them. As I watched Daylighting, I often felt as if I was watching a grad student’s unsuccessful attempt to create a local version of In The Heights.

Written by Philip Dawkins and directed by Jasson Minadakis, the Marin Theatre Company recently presented the West Coast premiere of Failure: A Love Story. In his production notes, Dawkins encourages stage directors to be as creative as they wish when casting his play.

“The chorus can take any number of shapes. Multiple people, one person, puppets… Make it as simple or complex as you see fit. Feel free to reassign some or all of the chorus’ lines to other characters. You want the two dead parents to comprise the chorus? Go for it. You want a trio of hear-no/see-no/speak-no evil monkeys narrating the story? Rock on. It is possible to tell this story with as few as four actors or as many as fifty. So, have fun.”

2014-07-15-failure1.jpg

scene from Failure: A Love Story (Photo by: Kevin Berne)

An extremely high-spirited romp set in Chicago during the early 20th century, Failure: A Love Story is fairly bursting with moxie. Working on Nina Ball’s intriguingly flexible set, MTC’s ensemble sings, chirps, swims, dances, and hisses (isn’t that what pythons do?) with a grand sense of determination and panache. From the outset, the audience is informed that two immigrants had their last name changed at Ellis Island, moved to Chicago, and set up a clock repair shop in the storefront below their apartment. When the couple drowned in a bizarre automobile accident, they left behind four children:

  • Nelly (Kathryn Zdan), a jazz baby with flapper tendencies, who will die from being hit in the head with a blunt object.
  • Jenny June (Liz Sklar), who is determined to make her name as a competitive lake swimmer but will drown in the brief moment that her coach averts his gaze.
  • Gertrude (Megan Smith), who will die of consumption; and
  • John N. (Patrick Kelly Jones), their adopted son who was found floating down the Chicago River with a snake in his basket.

2014-07-15-failure2.jpg

sisters (Jenny June, Gertrude, and Nelly) in Failure: A Love Story

Never mind the fact that all three Fail sisters will die before the play ends, along with a pet python named Moses (who doesn’t “supposes”). This cast of mildly crazed characters is eager to entertain you even if it kills them (which it does with an astonishingly high level of accuracy and a relentlessly jovial kind of satisfaction).

2014-07-15-failure3.jpg

In his note from the artistic director, Minadakis explains that:

“Every so often, a play crosses my desk with language and imagery that so deeply connects with my imagination that the entire world of the play mushrooms into existence. Those plays are the plays that I fight to put on our stage (they are also plays that I try to direct). Failure: A Love Story is one of those plays. In the middle of my first reading, I knew I wanted to stage the play using actors who could both sing and play multiple instruments. I knew I needed our frequent collaborator, Chris Houston, to orchestrate arrangements for the songs listed in the play as well as compose additional music that would nearly turn our production into a musical. So much of what you will experience seemed to create itself. That’s what great playwrights inspire: a blossoming of ideas.”

As Mortimer Mortimer (the man who serially and tragically falls in love with each of the Fail sisters), Brian Herndon has a jolly good time onstage. However, when faced with the unrelenting optimism of the Fail sisters (as opposed to Chekhov’s gloomy trio), failure is never really an option. The play does, however, suffer from several peculiar problems.

  • Because there is so much repetition of text for stylistic purposes, one often feels as if the playwright is beating a dead leitmotif into the ground.
  • With the small ensemble taking on numerous roles and switching back and forth from Fail family characters to momentary narrators, the choral form of narration eventually wears thin and starts to run out of steam.
  • Once it becomes obvious that Dawkins plans to leave no character alive, it’s easy for audiences to fall into the trap of waiting to see who croaks next.
  • After a while, the production’s extensive use of musical instruments, puppets, and other devices makes it seem as if Failure: A Love Story is more about the production’s inventiveness and use of clever props (hat tip to Seren Helday) than about its human characters.

Whether coping with a pair of green monk parakeets or trying to keep focused as the ensemble imitates the different clocks in the family shop that are simultaneously striking the hour, MTC’s production of Failure: A Love Story offers up a dizzying amount of entertainment. There are times, however, when you might feel as if you’ve been trapped in a perverse Midwestern version of Disney’s “It’s A Small World” ride in which everyone kicks the bucket.

Chloë Grace Moretz And Michelle Obama Give ‘The Hunger Games’ New Meaning

An apple a day keeps the doctor away, unless you’re Chloë Grace Moretz.

In Funny Or Die’s new parody of dystopian films, the actress finds herself on the receiving end of some strange advice from a medical professional while the rest her classmates gorge themselves on junk food. She’s accidentally stumbled into the “snackpocalypse,” where carrots are seen as threats, and the words “healthy eating habits” are verboten.

Although the fake trailer closely mirrors the plot of “Divergent,” it also tips its hat to “The Hunger Games.” First Lady and healthy eating advocate Michelle Obama even makes an appearance.

Give the star-studded parody a watch, above.

‘Denim Day’ Reminds Us (Again) That Wearing Tight Pants Doesn’t Give Rapists An Excuse To Attack

Though some court rulings may imply otherwise, wearing tight clothing does not give rapists permission to assault.

Wednesday marks “Denim Day,” the awareness event when advocates and survivors speak up for the rights of people who have been sexually abused. The event dates back to 1999 when the Italian Supreme Court overturned a rape conviction because the victim wore fitted jeans at the time of the assault. The justices ruled that the victim must have helped her attacker remove her pants, thereby giving her consent.

The following day, female politicians came to work wearing jeans to stand in solidarity with the victim. Peace Over Violence then turned that powerful statement into Denim Day — the day advocates wear jeans and attend rallies to protest against misguided attitudes about sexual violence.

Supporters are getting involved in a number of ways.

University of California, Berkeley students, for example, are distributing information about the campaign and giving people a chance to express messages about sexual assault on T-shirts and jeans. The Guess Foundation committed to making a $ 100,000 donation to Peace Over Violence, and has more than 400 stores participating in Denim Day efforts. Assault survivors are also using the awareness day as an opportunity to speak out. Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck unified with the cause by wearing blue jeans to a Denim Day event in L.A., CBS Los Angeles reported.

Over the years, some progress has been made with regard to how survivors of sexual assault are treated.

In 2008, the Italian court overturned its original ruling and stated that “jeans cannot be compared to any type of chastity belt,” the Telegraph reported at the time.

Still, advocates say that rape survivors have to bear far too much stigma.

According to the Rape Abuse & Incest National Network, 60 percent of sexual assault cases in the U.S. are not reported to the police.

Denim Day supporters hope that their efforts will empower abuse victims, break taboos and help debunk misconceptions.

The way our society thinks about rape and receives survivors is not only tragic, it’s dangerous,” Mariska Hargitay, actress and advocate, wrote on Denim Day two years ago. “Fearing that they won’t be believed, survivors are less likely to report their rapes, which means rapists stay out of jail, which means they are free to rape again.”

Feeling inspired? Find out how you can get involved with Denim Day.

20 Awkward Breakups That Give Us Secondhand Embarrassment

Let’s face it — breakups are inherently awkward. If you’re not a big fan of death glares and uncomfortable silences, you’re better off just staying put in that relationship of yours.

But breakups can also be really, really funny, as Jimmy Fallon reminded us Thursday. The “Tonight Show” host asked his 11.9 million Twitter followers to weigh in with their most #awkwardbreakup and naturally — since he’s Jimmy Fallon — the hashtag started to trend like crazy.

Give Thanks (and Leftovers) to the Job Creators

Alms for the rich!

WASHINGTON – Don’t give your Thanksgiving leftovers to that food bank or homeless shelter.

America’s job creators have an idea that will avoid making the nation’s “takers” even more lazy and shiftless and, at the same time, help build our domestic energy industry.

Ed Goldenspleen of Goldenspleen, Goldenspleen and Brackish, believes that leftover food is best contributed to the supply side of our economy, where it can support job creators.

“We’ve invented a new process to take precious food that might be wasted feeding our hungry and convert it into a fuel substitute that can help sustain the wealthiest one percent of Americans,” said Goldenspleen. “Kind of gives you goosebumps, if you think about it.”

How? Leftover food can be mulched and converted into a biofuel, which can then be exported via the Keystone pipeline to oil starved refineries in Texas, generating profits for our domestic oil industry.

Those job creators can then grow the economy by hiring new maintenance people, line workers and other low-wage positions.

When those low-wage workers are on their way home to their trailers, cars and sturdy cardboard boxes, they will likely throw a couple of quarters into the cups of begging homeless people, who can take use those quarters to purchase quality hot meals from the dollar menu at McDonald’s.

Those purchases help McDonald’s increase profits and the cycle begins anew.

“It’s almost hard to imagine no one’s thought of this before,” said Goldenspleen. “Ending hunger as a goal sound nice. But where does it end? Does everybody need a swimming pool? Let’s let the market dictate.”
