Global Fashion Agenda Welcomes Nike as Strategic Partner

PARIS — Copenhagen’s Global Fashion Agenda has welcomed Nike into its fold, marking its expansion into the athletic segment.
Other strategic partners of the leadership forum on fashion sustainability, which organizes the annual Copenhagen Fashion Summit as well as the yearly industry report, Pulse of the Fashion Industry, in collaboration with the Boston Consulting Group and the annual CEO Agenda, include H&M, Kering, Li & Fung, Sustainable Apparel Coalition and Target.
Global Fashion Agenda’s chief executive officer Eva Kruse in a statement released on Wednesday said the nonprofit organization has long had Nike on its radar. “Having an athletic company in our group will not only help push the agenda in an important segment, but with Nike’s global reach and innovative thinking, they’ll be able to help us propel the agenda further,” she said.
The aim of the GFA is to mobilize the global fashion system and guide and support industry leaders in changing the way fashion is produced, marketed and consumed.
Nike releases geared around its commitment to sustainable innovation, meanwhile, include the Flyknit and Nike Air styles. The brand releases a yearly Sustainable Business Report.

Microsoft has revealed Project xCloud, a realization of their plans to bring their titles, via streaming, to “any screen” while “empowering YOU, the gamers, to be at the center of your gaming experience.”

Announced on Microsoft’s blog, Project xCloud will allow developers to “deploy and dramatically scale access to their games across all devices on Project xCloud with no additional work.”

Microsoft’s plan is to begin “public trials in 2019” so they can “learn and scale with different volumes and locations.”

The team behind xCloud has designed a a “new customizable blade that can host the component parts of multiple Xbox One consoles, as well as the associated infrastructure supporting it.”

Global Grassroots Campaign Urges Prada to Stop Using Fur

APPEALING TO PRADA: Trying to turn up the pressure on Prada to adopt a fur-free policy, animal protection activists are banding together to launch an international campaign.
The coordinated effort is timed for the start of New York Fashion Week, which signals the launch of the more unofficial fashion month as buyers, influencers and editors will be off to London, Milan and Paris. Spearheaded by the Fur Free Alliance, a group of 40 animal-protection organizations from 30-plus countries, the initiative calls on supporters to use social media, phone calls and e-mails to reach out to Prada asking the company to stop using fur in its collections. The group is also getting help with outreach from Care2. Their efforts will start in Japan, according to PJ Smith, senior manager of fashion policy for the Humane Society of the U.S.
He said Wednesday via e-mail, “The Fur Free Alliance has been reaching out to Prada’s executive staff and board members since May. We e-mailed executive staff and board members and spoke with a senior vice president in July to let them know about the impending Fur Free Alliance global campaign, and last week we spoke with another member of senior staff from the Milan office.”

NUMBER ONE FAN: Montblanc has a new global face in the way of Chinese actress and red carpet darling Fan Bing Bing.
Following the launch of her own cosmetics line, Fan Beauty, in March, the “I Am Not Madame Bovary” and “X-Men” franchise star is now fronting the German high-end accessories brand.

The contract is another addition to her already lucrative career. Fan has been China’s best paid celebrity for four years running now, according to Forbes, with her 2017 income estimated at 300 million renminbi, or $ 47.5 million at current exchange.
Fan has worked with international houses like Chopard and L’Oréal in the past. In 2016, she and her boyfriend Li Chen fronted fast fashion chain H&M’s Chinese New Year campaign. The two are now engaged after Li proposed last September, footage of which was shared on social media.

H&M Names Five Winners of Global Change Award

PARIS — Hennes & Mauritz AB named the five winners of its Global Change Award, and asked the public to vote online for one of them to help split the 1 million euro prize.
The fashion industry, including fast-fashion groups that offer inexpensive clothing at cut-throat prices, is under pressure to rein in waste as public awareness of environmental issues gains ground.
Winners were: Crop-A-Porter, which makes textile from food crop harvest leftovers; Algae Apparel, which uses algae as a dye; Smart Stitch, which makes dissolvable thread; The Regenerator, which separates cotton and polyester blends for recycling, and Fungi Fashion, which makes clothes from decomposing mushroom roots.
“All industries need to re-think, innovate and challenge status quo,” said H&M chief executive officer and board member Karl-Johan Persson.
The company noted that applicants offered a broad range of ideas, but that most of the solutions came from outside the fashion industry.
“This year’s Global Change Award winners are about disrupting business-as-usual to help transition us to a low-carbon and circular economy,” noted Vikram Widge, who heads climate finance and policy for the International Finance Corporation, and was a member of the award’s jury.

Global Brands Group Inks Licensing Agreement With AllSaints

LONDON — AllSaints, the British contemporary label known for its biker jackets, has signed a licensing agreement with the Hong Kong-listed Global Brands Group to expand its accessories range.
As part of the agreement, GBG will design and distribute men’s and women’s footwear, socks, costume jewelry and cold weather accessories for the brand, starting with the fall 2018 collection. The company plans to distribute the new ranges globally across AllSaints stores and major department stores around the world.
William Kim, AllSaints’ chief executive officer, said that the new deal offers an opportunity to connect with customers across multiple product categories.

Kering Named Most Sustainable Global Corporation

GREEN THUMBS UP: Kering has been named the top sustainable textile, apparel and luxury goods corporation, according to rankings released by the Corporate Knights Global 100 index, which was published at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on Tuesday.
The company, which owns brands including Gucci, Alexander McQueen and Balenciaga, took first place in its category and was ranked 47th in an overall listing of companies. This is the third time the company has been named on this list.
Marie-Claire Daveu, chief sustainability officer and head of international institutional affairs of Kering, said the ranking is a source of motivation to continue the company’s pursuit of “a more sustainable luxury.”
“We consider sustainability to be the Kering seal of savoir-faire, a criterion in all business decisions, traversing all departments and areas of our supply chain,” said Daveu.
Last year the firm unveiled a program aimed at reducing its environmental footprint by 40 percent by 2025. Their strategy focuses on three pillars: care, which pertains to the environment; collaborate, for social aspects of sustainability such as employee, supplier and community welfare and equality, and create, which encompasses new business opportunities.

Galileo Global Education Acquires Two Fashion Schools in Milan

MILAN – Galileo Global Education has signed an agreement to acquire two Italian fashion schools and a Cypriot university from Laureate Education Inc. The operation was valued 225 million euros. The schools are the Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti, better known as Naba, and Domus Academy.
Both are located in Milan and specialized in fashion, design and the visual arts. The group has also acquired the European University Cyprus, or EUC, which is specialized in medicine.
Galileo Global Education has more than 54 institutes in its portfolio, including the Istituto Marangoni fashion and design school, which has branches in Milan, Florence, London, Paris, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Mumbai and Miami.

HONG KONG — Much like the Indian weddings he often designs for, an outfit by Sabyasachi Mukherjee is a mélange of colors, intricate patterns and delight. Over the course of 16 years since he started his namesake couture label, the Kolkata native has become feted not just for his design sensibilities, but also for utilizing near forgotten arts-and-crafts traditions from around India.
On Nov. 2, Lane Crawford department store launched an exclusive collection of 29 ready-to-wear pieces from Mukherjee, a chance to get his aesthetic but in a more pared-down silhouette, accompanied by a display of 39 of his couture pieces. It is the first proper foray into East Asia for the designer, who is starting to make more noise globally.
Last month, he debuted a spikes-meets-sari collaboration of men’s and women’s shoes designed together with his friend Christian Louboutin. This most recent collaboration with Lane Crawford, however, was inspired by a visit to China Club, the members-only social establishment set up by the late David Tang.
“This is ready-to-wear with a sense of couture, all the finishings and labor-intensive [work] that couture requires, but in much simpler silhouettes,” Mukherjee told WWD, while visiting Hong Kong.

H&M Foundation Calls For Applicants For Third Global Change Award

PARIS — The nonprofit H&M Foundation is calling for applications for the third round of its annual Global Change Award, a reward for sustainable concepts for fashion.
“I’m really curious to see what disruptive innovations we will receive this time,” said Karl-Johan Persson, chief executive officer of H&M, who is a board member of the foundation.
Past winning ideas for the award, which drew 2,800 applications last year, include digital threads, denim dyed with a coloring powder derived from recycled denim, vegetable leather made from winemaking leftovers and biodegradable textile made from cow manure.

Kenzo Plots Global Expansion Under New CEO

PARIS — Kenzo’s new chief executive officer is expected to speed the brand’s expansion in China, Japan and the U.S.
“The objective is to really continue the momentum,” said Pierre-Yves Roussel, chairman and ceo of LVMH Fashion Group, who tapped Sylvie Colin to helm the Paris-based fashion house, effective Sept. 25.
She will succeed Eric Marechalle, who becomes ceo of Marc Jacobs International, effective Oct. 1.
Colin joins from the contemporary fashion brand Maje, which belongs to SMCP group.
Over the summer, Kenzo transformed its distribution agreement with Hong Kong-based specialty retailer I.T into a joint venture, which will allow the brand to “scale up” its presence in China, where there already more than 45 Kenzo stores.
“We really believe there is a lot of potential there, given the size of the market and our price point,” Roussel said.
The company is also in the throes of relaunching the brand in Japan, and Colin is to lay the groundwork to open freestanding stores in the U.S. “in the years to come” to build on the wholesale business, he added.
Meanwhile, the brand continues to march across Europe, having opened a boutique in Barcelona earlier this year that Roussel noted is performing strongly.

NEW FACE: Uniqlo has appointed Gordon Reid, the world’s top male professional wheelchair tennis player, as its latest global brand ambassador. Reid, a Paralympics singles gold medalist, is the first British athlete to represent the company in such a capacity.

Joseph Janus Promoted to WeSC Global CEO on Growth of U.S. Business

WeSC has realigned its executive team, promoting Joseph Janus to group chief executive officer on the heels of the streetwear brand’s U.S. growth as it turns to scaling in Europe.
WeSC, which stands for We are the Superlative Conspiracy, previously had Janus in the ceo role for WeSC America based out of the New York office. Janus succeeds Tony Westler in his new role.
The change is a reflection of a few factors, beginning with the U.S. business now representing more than 40 percent of the Swedish company’s overall sales, up from about 20 percent two years ago.
“We made a decision to elevate our product three years ago,” Janus said. “WeSC started off as a skateboard clothing brand and we’ve been really focused the last three years on making it a Swedish lifestyle brand.”
That began with the build-out of full collections versus launching T-shirts and hoodies each season, which has helped it get into new doors. The strategy has recently been applied in Sweden with a contemporary offering that’s helped get the brand into doors such as Nordiska Kompaniet. Retailers such as Galeries Lafayette is another example of where Janus would like the brand to go.

Global Brands Acquires Majority Stake in Sean John

Diddy has a new partner.
Global Brands Group Holding Ltd. has purchased a majority stake in Sean John, the men’s lifestyle brand founded 18 years ago by hip-hop entrepreneur Sean “Diddy” Combs — alternately known as Puff Daddy or Puffy. The deal, the terms of which were not disclosed, also includes Combs’ Enyce brand.
Sean John, which has annual retail sales of around $ 450 million, as well as the smaller Enyce brand, will become part of CAA-GBG Global Brand Management Group, a division that involves a number of celebrity labels including Jennifer Lopez, Eva Longoria and the Bob Marley Estate, as well as Coca-Cola, Jeep and Hershey’s.
Combs will retain a minority interest — believed to be around 20 percent — and will continue to be involved in the marketing and promotion of the Sean John brand. Jeff Tweedy, Sean John’s longtime president, will remain in his position, and the brand’s current roster of licenses — as well as its exclusive relationship with Macy’s for the sportswear line — will also continue.
“When we started Sean John, it was my dream to build it into an aspirational brand for the young consumer,” said Combs, chief executive officer of Sean John and chairman of Combs Enterprises.

Prior to the professionalization of academic disciplines, the reading public gained much of its knowledge about the world from travel writing. Travel writers found a wide and respectful audience for their reports on history, geography, and the natural world, in addition to reporting on aboriginal cultures before the advent of anthropology as a discipline. Although in recent decades western historians have paid little attention to travel writing, Wrobel demonstrates that this genre in fact offers an important and rich understanding of the American West-one that extends and complicates a simple reading of the West that promotes the notions of Manifest Destiny or American exceptionalism. Wrobel finds counterpoints to the mythic West of the nineteenth century in such varied accounts as George Catlin’s Adventures of the Ojibbeway and Ioway Indians in England, France, and Belgium (1852), Richard Francis Burton’s The City of the Saints (1861), and Mark Twain’s Following the Equator (1897), reminders of the messy and contradictory world that people navigated in the past much as they do in the present. His book is a testament to the instructive ways in which the best travel writers have represented the West.

The 2015-16 International Woolmark Prize global finalists have all been decided.
The six men’s wear finalists will compete in January at Pitti Uomo in Florence, while the six women’s wear finalists will face off in New York in February.
The six men’s wear nominees are Munsoo Kwon (Asia); P. Johnson (Australia); Agi & Sam (British Isles), Jonathan Christopher (Europe) Suketdhir (India, Pakistan and Middle East), and Siki Im (U.S.).

Jeffrey Rudes Prepares New Men’s Collection for Global Ride

Jeffrey Rudes now has a flagship store in Manhattan’s SoHo section for his fledgling brand of luxury men’s wear, but it’s unlikely to remain the sole brick-and-mortar home for it.
Rudes, often cited as one of the patriarchs of the premium denim business for his founding and stewardship of the J Brand, opened his 5,800-square-foot store at 57 Greene Street Thursday after a presentation of his spring collection and opening party on Wednesday night. Even as he and his team struggled with last-minute details for the presentation and opening, he was already open to discussion of what’s next for what, until now, has been a self-financed enterprise.
“We expect to have a global, multichannel retail footprint,” he told WWD, “but first we want to get it right in our store and on our Web site. Would we use franchisees or finance the rollout internally? It’s too soon to say, but if I’m thinking in terms of a global rollout of the brand, I’m not going to be doing it myself.”

Gucci’s Chime For Change Teams up With Global Citizen

In an effort to raise awareness about girls’ and women’s issues around the globe, the Gucci-led Chime For Change has secured a long-term partnership with Global Citizen, a group striving to end extreme poverty by 2030.
To that end, Gucci and Chime For Change have signed on as the presenting partners for this year’s Global Citizen Festival that will be held on Sept. 26 in New York on Central Park’s Great Lawn. Thousands are expected to catch performances by Beyoncé, Ed Sheeran, Pearl Jam and Coldplay.
Beyoncé will be right at home, and not just because she and Jay Z live in TriBeCa. In 2013, she cofounded Chime for Change with Salma Hayek to help raise funds and awareness for girls’ and women’s empowerment with a focus on education, health and justice. Through crowdfunding, the group has raised more than $ 7.3 million to support 409 projects in 86 countries through 144 nonprofit partners.
Never one to shirk the spotlight, Beyoncé helped launch the partnership with Global Citizen with an announcement video. World-renowned violinist, Cho-Liang Lin, Professor of Violin at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music, urges all young musicians “to get up in front of people and perform.”

And The Shepherd School Orchestra did – magnificently! Led by their charismatic conductor, Larry Rachleff, the orchestra made its Carnegie Hall debut Tuesday evening, February 18 with energy, artistry and a very distinctive Shepherd sound.

Founded in 1975, The Shepherd School of Music in Houston is widely recognized as one of the nation’s most elite music institutions. The school emphasizes a performance-based curriculum. “I think what’s unique about the Shepherd School is that musicians are given a lot of opportunities to learn in front of an audience and that’s very important when it comes to building self-confidence,” explains student violinist Niccolo Muti.

The performance at Carnegie Hall kicked off with Hector Berlioz’ Le Corsaire followed by American Composer Christopher Rouse’s Violin Concerto featuring a remarkable solo performance by Cho-Liang Lin. The score to this complex and beautiful work was actually composed for Cho-Liang Lin in 1991. The principal orchestral work of the evening was Bela Bartok’s magnificent Concerto for Orchestra featuring numerous solos from the ensemble, giving many of the 103 extraordinarily gifted young musicians the opportunity to shine.

Beyond the dream of all accomplished musicians, which is to perform in prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall, there are the numerous additional benefits and skills that a music education at this level of the art form can offer students. “Performers achieve incredible levels of coordination and dexterity while simultaneously channeling the deepest emotional expressions of the music. How can this not be of benefit to all studies,” observes professional artist and faculty member, Jon Kimura Parker.

I had the opportunity to chat further with Cho-Liang Lin and Jon Kimura Parker along with students Madeleine Doyon-Robitaille (trombonist), Titus Underwood (oboist), Anatasia Sukhopara (violinist) and Niccolo Muti (violinist).

You are both veterans of the international concert stage as well as committed educators. What do you think are the most important skills that a young artist must have to be successful in the professional world of music today?

Cho-Liang Lin: Classical music is such an exacting discipline. It takes years of practicing, single-minded training and hours of lessons. Then one enters the real world where competition is stiff and judgment of one’s talent and thus future career can be decided in one single performance or audition. Therefore, apart from talent, a young artist must have the ability to convey artistry, emotion and a real sense of beauty to the audience. This requires natural ability, confidence, clear-minded thinking and lots of experience. By experience, I mean knowing what to do on stage under pressure. This cannot be learned in a practice room. It must be learned by being on stage in front of an audience.

Jon Kimura Parker: I believe that young artists have to understand themselves and to be able to communicate effectively. Forty years ago, it was not remarkable to ask of our audience that they would disconnect from the external world and focus on a 40-minute work. Nowadays, we are stretching the attention span of many. I love to see a young artist be able to engage people around them; to inspire others to discover the incredible joy of great music.

What real world life skills do you believe an educated musician can use in other pursuits?

Cho-Liang Lin: In a word: Passion. I am passionate about music. Nothing is more rewarding than to listen or play a great work. Passion for something one holds dear is very important. Beethoven, Tom Edison, Steve Jobs, Michelangelo, Goethe, Jonas Salk, and Lincoln all had passion. Believe in something one loves and pursue that something to the fullest.

Jon Kimura Parker: Musicians aren’t just creating music; they are also great listeners. An educated musician typically has a highly developed sense of the beauty of mathematics and structure, an endless curiosity, and a deep connection with the humanities. These skills have taken musicians in many different directions.

What real world life skills (other than music) did you gain from your education at the Shepherd School of Music? Do you think music helped you with your other academic studies at Rice?

Madeleine Doyon-Robitaille: Absolutely! Learning music gives you a lot of skills that are precious in life. One important example is discipline! To learn an instrument requires constant effort. You learn that with perseverance you can achieve your dream. And learning to persevere applies to everything in life.

Anastasia Sukhopara: I think gratitude and discipline are some of the most important life skills. The dedication to music and to the highest standards of excellence that are required at the Shepherd School are a priceless life lesson. Settling for nothing but the best is really a critical skill, in music and life alike.

Titus Underwood: I have gained a deeper appreciation for artistry among my young colleagues.

Niccolo Muti: You can be as passionate as you want to be about something but if you don’t put in the work it won’t help you succeed.

So, what advice would you give to freshman musicians coming to the Shepherd School of Music?

Madeleine Doyon-Robitaille: Take every opportunity you can to learn and push yourself farther in your musical development! Shepherd school is such a rich musical environment. There are incredible faculty, talented students and so many opportunities. It’s the best time and the best environment to improve yourself and become a better musician!

Titus Underwood: Stay confident in your abilities but always humble in your ethics.

Anastasia Sukhopara: Know what you want, work hard and be patient!

Niccolo Muti: You are going to get a lot of opportunities to perform at the Shepherd School and performance experience is the most important thing when it comes to building self-confidence.

A lot of professional musicians both teach and perform at your school – what’s it like to be learning from artists/teachers such as Renee Fleming, Jon Kimura Parker and Cho-Liang Lin?

Madeleine Doyon-Robitaille: It’s fantastic that Shepherd School gives us these opportunities. It’s been an incredible experience to have the chance to play for those professional musicians! It’s always been really inspiring even when it was not my specific instrument.

Niccolo Muti: Renee Fleming gave a master class at the Shepherd School. She told us that she is still constantly learning and working at her craft. It made me realize that musicians are all human, that is, we all have issues and things we want to improve but we also have the same goal, and that is to be the best we can be at what we do.

Here’s What These Record Low Temperatures Say About Global Warming

As the frigid polar vortex makes itself at home over a giant swath of the country, it’s also serving as fodder for all those equally unwelcome climate change deniers. Despite the fact that 97 percent of scientists agree that man-made climate change is happening, the likes of Donald Trump say many of these record lows are the perfect proof to show that, no, the planet is not warming. Scientific right?

So, does this extreme winter weather prove that our planet is just as cold as it’s always been? No, not at all. But it does say this.

Dear Mr. Trump: Winter is always cold. And sometimes that means unimaginably cold.

Despite wind chills nearing -60 degrees Fahrenheit in Chicago and temperatures that left some parts of Canada colder than Mars, Arctic sea ice is still melting, atmospheric CO2 concentrations are still climbing and climate change is predicted to pose a far greater threat to the planet than many scientists thought.

Winters have become increasingly warmer over the past century, and despite the recent bout of subzero temps, global warming can make extreme weather events like the polar vortex even worse. In layman’s terms, as the planet warms and Arctic sea ice melts, the northern polar region equalizes a bit with temperatures farther south, causing the jet stream that forms a circular band around the northern latitudes to slow down.

This jet stream usually holds the far colder Arctic air in place with winds in excess of 100 mph, but pockets of cold can escape at times when the stream slows down, according to Time. That’s exactly what’s happened this time around, except the amount of cold that’s leaked past the seal is much larger than usual and has pushed farther south (take a look at this interactive graphic from the Guardian for a better visual).

Plain and simple, climate change can’t be proven or disproven by a single weather event. Period. Long-term trends have shown that climate change is happening and the IPCC has said it’s “extremely likely” humans are the dominant cause.

So, although it’s counterintuitive, the current frostbitten state of the country may be further proof that yes, the planet is warming — and climate change is here with a vengeance.
