American Gods Season 2 Trailer Promises War

Starz has unveiled the full trailer for American Gods Season 2, which finally hits our screens on Sunday, March 10 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. The first season concluded back in June 2017, so Mr. Wednesday and Shadow Moon’s much-anticipated return is a blessing indeed. Watch the new trailer above.

Here’s Starz’s description of the new season: “We were forged in God’s image, but the Gods are also made in ours — and in Season 2 the battle moves inexorably toward crisis point as the destinies of gods and men collide. While Mr. World plots revenge for the attack against him in Season 1, Shadow throws in his lot with Wednesday’s attempt to convince the Old Gods of the case for full-out war, with Laura and Mad Sweeney in tow. A council at the House on the Rock explodes into chaos, sending deities both Old and New on quests across America that will converge on Cairo, Illinois forcing Shadow to carve out a place as a believer in this strange new world of living gods — a dark world where change demands commitment, and faith requires terrible sacrifice.”

Fear of God’s Jerry Lorenzo on the Future of Luxury Streetwear

As much as Jerry Lorenzo operates outside of the fashion industry — he doesn’t hold shows, doesn’t present in line with the seasonal calendar and has no formal training as a designer — he’s managed to infiltrate the system by producing special product he believes is missing from the market.
He’s also managed to create and profit from an aesthetic that works in luxury settings and more mass environments — see the merchandise he designed with Justin Bieber and his collaborations with PacSun and Vans.
In a conversation with WWD style director Alex Badia, Lorenzo spoke about why he thinks his line has been able to break through and what he thinks the future holds for the luxury streetwear category. Here, excerpts from the conversation.
WWD: How did you start your business?
Jerry Lorenzo: I was living in Los Angeles. We have a Garment District downtown and you can make anything you want, whether it’s a couch or a long T-shirt. I was trying to find solutions for my own wardrobe because there were things I couldn’t find on the shelves and I figured why don’t I go downtown and make what I want. Before that I worked for the Los Angeles Dodgers and I

Exclusive: Calvin Klein Hosting God’s Love We Deliver Summer Party at Hamptons Home

Calvin Klein is set to host the annual God’s Love We Deliver Midsummer Night Drinks June 10 at his palatial Southampton, N.Y., waterfront home.
This will be the first time the designer has hosted the fund-raiser at his 10-acre seaside property, upon which he constructed a modern glass structure for a reported $ 75 million.
“It didn’t take much convincing since Calvin is such a strong supporter of the cause,” intimated a committee member of GLWD, which prepares and delivers nutritious meals to people living with advanced stages of HIV/AIDS in the New York area. “We’re all just thrilled to see the house,” added the insider.
On March 9, the organization raised $ 1.5 million at the Love Rocks NYC benefit concert at the Beacon Theatre. Emceed by Bill Murray, the sold-out show featured performances by Joe Walsh, Jackson Browne, Mavis Staples and Michael McDonald, among others.
“Play ‘Free Bird,’” shouted one rowdy concertgoer at GLWD President Karen Pearl’s speech ahead of a musical set that concluded with a rousing, yet predictable, rendition of “With a Little Help from My Friends,” featuring a house band led by “Late Show With David Letterman” alums Will Lee and Paul Shaffer.

Fear of God’s Fifth Collection

Jerry Lorenzo isn’t the typical men’s fashion designer. He holds an MBA instead of a degree from a fashion school, and he prefers to scour vintage stores and flea markets rather than sketch. He also waited 16 months before unveiling the latest collection for Fear of God, his cult label that has attracted fans such as Justin Bieber, Russell Westbrook, Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid.
In Fear of God’s Fifth Collection, which is the equivalent of a fall 2017 release, Lorenzo stuck with high school in the Nineties as his theme. This time, though, he walked across the hall from the classroom where the grunge rockers who inspired his Fourth Collection hang to the spot occupied by the hip-hop crew that also excels at sports.
“The muse is more of this high school athlete of the Nineties who, at the time, dictated what is cool in fashion,” he said during a preview at his studio in downtown Los Angeles.
Speaking this muse’s athletic language, Lorenzo introduced mesh and put a lot of attention on sweats, basketball shorts and jerseys. He also veered off course into punkish plaid pants with drawstring waists and unzipped ankles and pajama-style shirts and coats. He expanded his textile

Sneaking a Look at God’s Cards

Sneaking a Look at God’s Cards

Quantum mechanics, which describes the behavior of subatomic particles, seems to challenge common sense. Waves behave like particles; particles behave like waves. You can tell where a particle is, but not how fast it is moving-or vice versa. An electron faced with two tiny holes will travel through both at the same time, rather than one or the other. And then there is the enigma of creation ex nihilo, in which small particles appear with their so-called antiparticles, only to disappear the next instant in a tiny puff of energy. Since its inception, physicists and philosophers have struggled to work out the meaning of quantum mechanics. Some, like Niels Bohr, have responded to quantum mechanics’ mysteries by replacing notions of position and velocity with probabilities. Others, like Einstein and Penrose, have disagreed and think that the entire puzzle reflects not a fundamental principle of nature but our own ignorance of basic scientific processes. Sneaking a Look at God’s Cards offers the general reader a deep and real understanding of the problems inherent to the interpretation of quantum mechanics, from its inception to the present. The book presents a balanced overview of current debates and explores how the theory of quantum mechanics plays itself out in the real world. Written from the perspective of a leading European physicist, it looks extensively at ideas from both sides of the Atlantic and also considers what philosophers have contributed to the scientific discussion of this field. Sneaking a Look at God’s Cards sets out what we know about the endlessly fascinating quantum world, how we came to this understanding, where we disagree, and where we are heading in our quest to comprehend the seemingly incomprehensible.

What Size Are God’s Shoes: Kids, Chaos, and the Spiritual Life

"It s hard to have a God complex when your kids expect you to play garbage truck every night. This is the game where I lie on the floor as the boys stuff trucks, action figures, and plastic dinosaurs into my shirt. When the garbage truck is full to the point of overflowing, I go to the town dump by standing up. This is repeated ad nauseum. On any given day, I might find myself absolving sins in the name of the Church one moment and serving the cause of waste management the next." Do you believe God can be found in both the miraculous and the mundane? Through 40 insightful and engaging essays, Tim Schenck helps us encounter God through the chaos of everyday life. The divine presence weaves its way into a family room fish tank, a child s probing questions, the town pool, and the drive-thru window of the local fast food chain.

God’s Gangs

God’s Gangs

Los Angeles is the epicenter of the American gang problem. Rituals and customs from Los Angeles’ eastside gangs, including hand signals, graffiti, and clothing styles, have spread to small towns and big cities alike. Many see the problem with gangs as related to urban marginality-for a Latino immigrant population struggling with poverty and social integration, gangs offer a close-knit community. Yet, as Edward Orozco Flores argues in God’s Gangs, gang members can be successfully redirected out of gangs through efforts that change the context in which they find themselves, as well as their notions of what it means to be a man. Flores here illuminates how Latino men recover from gang life through involvement in urban, faith-based organizations. Drawing on participant observation and interviews with Homeboy Industries, a Jesuit-founded non-profit that is one of the largest gang intervention programs in the country, and with Victory Outreach, a Pentecostal ministry with over 600 chapters, Flores demonstrates that organizations such as these facilitate recovery from gang life by enabling gang members to reinvent themselves as family men and as members of their community. The book offers a window into the process of redefining masculinity. As Flores convincingly shows, gang members are not trapped in a cycle of poverty and marginality. With the help of urban ministries, such men construct a reformed barrio masculinity to distance themselves from gang life. Edward Orozco Flores is Assistant Professor of Sociology at Loyola University Chicago.

In God’s Country

In God’s Country

Though much has been written about the political implications of the religious revival which has engulfed America in recent years, a question remains unanswered: what pushes its people into ‘declaring for Jesus’? Douglas Kennedy spent a long hot summer cruising through that expanse of the American South known as ‘The Bible Belt’ exploring that question. In a remarkable journey into one of the strangest corners of the United States, Kennedy finds himself spending time in Miami with a one-time member of the Mafia turned charismatic preacher, discovering Christian heavy metal music in Nashville, and visiting Death Row in South Carolina with an evangelist who ministers to the condemned. Repeatedly discovering the extraordinary within the ordinary, IN GOD’S COUNTRY is a profound, yet brilliantly entertaining exploration of life in late twentieth century America.

For Gods, Ghosts and Ancestors

For Gods, Ghosts and Ancestors

Offerings of various kinds food, incense, paper money and figures have been central to Chinese culture for millennia, and as a public, visual display of spiritual belief, they are still evident today in China and in Chinatowns around the world. Using Hong Kong as a case study, Janet Scott looks at paper offerings from every conceivable angle how they are made, sold, and used. Her comprehensive investigation touches on virtually every aspect of Chinese popular religion as it explores the many forms of these intricate objects, their manufacture, their significance, and their importance in rituals to honor gods, care for ancestors, and contend with ghosts. Throughout For Gods, Ghosts and Ancestors, paper offerings are presented as a vibrant and living tradition expressing worshippers’ respect and gratitude for the gods, as well as love and concern for departed family members. Ranging from fake paper money to paper furniture, servant dolls, cigarettes, and toiletries all multihued and artfully constructed paper offerings are intended to provide for the needs of those in the spirit world. Readers are introduced to the variety of paper offerings and their uses in worship, in assisting worshippers with personal difficulties, and in rituals directed to gods, ghosts, and ancestors. We learn of the manufacture and sale of paper goods, life in paper shops, the training of those who make paper offerings, and the symbolic and artistic dimensions of the objects. Finally, the book considers the survival of this traditional craft, the importance of flexibility and innovation, and the role of compassion and filial piety in the use of paper offerings.

‘Game Of Thrones’ Season 4 Episode 6 Recap: ‘The Laws Of Gods And Men’

Welcome to “Game of Moans,” the weekly recap of “Game of Thrones” Season 4 that highlights all the moan-worthy, gasp-filled, OMG moments that litter the Seven Kingdoms. In other words, you can get a traditional recap anywhere, so here’s all the sex, bloodshed, and WTF moments (the good stuff) that went down this week:

(Spoiler alert for “Game of Thrones” Season 4, Episode 6 “The Laws of Gods and Men.”)

As usual, Sunday night’s (May 11) episode, “The Laws of Gods and Men,” was fantastic, as well as heartbreaking. The two most tortured souls in “GoT,” Theon/Reek and Tyrion, had such emotional scenes this week, and both Alfie Allen and Peter Dinklage gave some of their best performances of the series.

The Holy-Crap-This-Dude-Is-Crazy Moan
Ramsay Snow is one of the most screwed up villiains “GoT” has ever seen and maybe even TV as a whole. He’s such a psycho it’s hard to not gasp in amazement and horror at his every evil move (or maybe I’m still in shock to see Iwan Rheon be so cruel after loving his “Misfits” character). Of course he exits his bedroom after ear-shattering sex covered in blood and scratches. Of course he smiles gleefully while hacking up men.

The Dragon Attack Moan
What a gorgeous, peaceful scene of a young boy watching his father’s goats grazing on hills of gently swaying grass. It was one of the most beautiful scenes of the season. But this is “Game of Thrones” guys, and beauty and peace are not things that last for long in the Seven Kingdoms. Up comes one of Dany’s dragons who proceeds to barbecue some grub just like it’s a hot July afternoon.

The Oh-No-She-Didn’t Moan
I was not expecting Shae to testify; nice little curve ball, Tywin. More importantly though, I don’t find her anger towards Tyrion completely justified. Yes, he broke her heart rather terribly, but we all know that he only acted that way out of love and to protect her. He never should’ve foolishly believed he could keep her safe in King’s Landing; that was his most selfish mistake. But to betray him like she did to the point of possibly causing his murder? That’s just too far, Shae.

The Fuck-Yeah-Tyrion! Moan
Good god, I love Tyrion. The last scene was absolutely incredible and as I said above, one of (if not the) best performances from Dinklage in the show yet. I was almost close to tears during the second half of the trial, mainly because I thought he was going to be killed (no, I don’t read the books), but also because I felt damn proud of him.

Some thoughts:

  • That opening shot was fantastic. I’m not sure why, but the photography this episode was more stunning than usual.
  • LOL, pirate jokes.
  • Further on what I said above (because it just can’t be expressed enough), Ramsay is so horribly horribly evil. Now that Theon has completely morphed into Reek, he wants Reek to pretend to be Theon?! Can Theon/Reek do it? If he acts like Theon could the familiarity of it remind him of who he really is? This will be really interesting …
  • Damn, Daenerys has the most titles of anyone in this show. You think they’d use some abbreviations for her long introduction, especially when she has over 200 meet and greets.
  • So it’s official, Varys is a asexual. (Not surprising.)
  • Jaime is just getting more and more valiant. He’s proven to be such a selfless hero since that rape scene that it almost feels like the writers are trying to make up for it. Or maybe this is just further proof that the rape was executed very badly on the show’s part.
  • That trial was so tense. It felt like a “Law and Order” episode.
  • I vote that Tyrion calls on Brienne to fight for him in the trial. (Please!!)

“Game of Thrones” airs on Sundays at 9 p.m. EDT on HBO.

“God’s Not Dead” Keeps Its Message Alive

Movie Review Jackie K Cooper
“God’s Not Dead” (Pure Flix)

“God’s Not Dead” is the latest entry in the Christian/family entertainment market. Directed by Harold Cronk, the movie sends a strong Christian message while being entertaining at the same time. The cast is largely full of lesser known actors with the exception of Kevin Sorbo and Willie Robertson, but all involved play their roles with competence.

The plot involves a college freshman named Josh (Shane Harper) who signs up for a Philosophy class taught by Professor Radisson (Sorbo). On the first day of class Radisson, an atheist, asks the class to sign a statement that “God is dead” so they can skip over that philosophical argument. It must be unanimous by all class members. Josh refuses to sign the statement so Radisson tells him he can have twenty minutes or so in each class session in order to sway the class members to his side. Then there will be a vote by the class as to which side is right.

The challenge is taken though Josh’s parents and his girlfriend (Cassidy Gifford) ask him to just let it go. He researches his belief and does a magnificent job of going head to heads with the professor. Of course this stunning ability to debate such a complex issue strains credibility, but in this movie anything is possible.

There are side issues in this movie involving a young woman facing cancer, another woman trying to convince her atheist boyfriend to accept her Christian beliefs, a third woman going against her parents in order to pronounce her faith. There are a lot of challenges in being a Christian and this movie projects a variety of them.

Sorbo is effective as the atheist professor and Harper is strong as the dedicated Christian student. Willie Robertson of “Duck Dynasty: fame appears as himself in order to make a statement about his beliefs. There is also a solid performance from Tricia LaFache as the young woman with cancer. The musical group Newsboys appear as themselves at the end of the film to present some uplifting songs.

The movie is rated PG for adult themes.

“God’s Not Dead” is not a movie that will appeal to everyone. It is definitely aimed at Christian believers. Still the dramatic context of the script and the talent of the cast could make it entertaining for anyone. It is a bit overdone in the presentation of its message but not as extreme as it could have been.

I scored “God’s Not Dead” a living 6 out of 10.
