Inside Kate Middleton’s Clever Wardrobe Trick to Never Upstage the Bride as a Wedding Guest

All eyes are usually on Kate Middleton — but the royal knows exactly how to let a friend have her time in the spotlight.

On Saturday afternoon, members of the royal family stepped out for the wedding of one of Kate’s closest friends, Sophie Carter, who married Robert Snuggs at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Norfolk.

The royal mom of three wore a cornflower blue Catherine Walker & Co coat dress for the special occasion — a recycled outfit! Princess Kate previously wore the piece when she arrived in Berlin with Prince William and their two eldest children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, during their July 2017 tour of Poland and Germany.

Just as she perfectly matched her family in blue for their tour, Kate coordinated with her children for the weekend wedding. Charlotte, 3, was one of three bridesmaids, while George, 5, was among the chosen four page boys, and they were outfitted by one of Kate’s favorite childrenswear designers, Amaia. Charlotte wore a linen dress in ivory with royal blue embroidered edging from the upmarket label. Meanwhile, George wore matching cropped blue trousers, with an off-white linen shirt accessorized with a blue cummerbund, also from Amaia.

Kate made her outfit wedding chic by adding a matching floral headpiece by milliner Juliette Botterill, who is becoming a go-to for royal family members like Princess Beatrice, Princess Eugenie and Zara Tindall.

At the May wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, she pulled an epic royal rewear with one of her favorite pieces: an off-white bespoke Alexander McQueen coat dress. In July 2015, Kate wore the structured-collared coat dress to Princess Charlotte’s christening. She pulled out the ensemble again at the Queen’s official birthday celebrations, Trooping the Colour, in 2016.

Six Georgian brands and designers will present their collections in the special area of the Spazio Carra, at the Fortezza da Basso location, as part of the program promoted by Fondazione Pitti Immagine Discovery with the goal to shine a spotlight on emerging creative talents from around the world.

M1992 to Guest as Special Project at Pitti Uomo

MILAN — Italian designer Dorian Stefano Tarantini is changing the name of his brand Malibu 1992 into M1992. The new moniker will make its debut during the upcoming edition of Pitti Uomo, running Jan. 9 to 12 in Florence.
“It’s not such a radical change,” said Tarantini, addressing his will to “polish, simplify the name and have a more neutral [starting point]” for his creative process.
“Malibu [1992] tied me too much to the city of Malibu and California, which will remain part of my [inspirations], but I preferred to shorten the name also because M is the initial of Malibu but also of Milan, which is my city,” he added. The designer further stressed the importance of having a “code name, which opens to more possibilities” and of “characterizing the brand with my products and collections,” rather than with a name.
Launched almost four years ago as an artistic, 30-minute video project, Malibu 1992 evolved into a fashion brand combining Tarantini’s tornado of inspirations, ranging from music to neoclassicism, from punk to Californian luxury.
After two seasons of runway shows in Milan, the brand will unveil its new name and fashion course in Florence, as it has been selected as a special project

Cornelia Guest to Be Honored by Equine Advocates

Cornelia Guest is getting her blue ribbon. The author, humanitarian and “Twin Peaks” actress is being recognized by Equine Advocates for both rescuing slaughter-bound horses and working to end horse slaughter altogether.
The daughter of late polo champion Winston Frederick Churchill Guest and American fashion icon C.Z. Guest, Cornelia started riding horses at a young age and quickly developed an affinity for them. Her love of animals has only grown since, and she recently established a sanctuary for equines, called the Artemis Farm Rescue, in Dutchess County, N.Y.
“Equine Advocates does such incredible inspiring work and it’s such an honor to get an award from them,” Guest said in a statement. “As a young child, I always had such empathy and devotion to any and all animals, but especially my beloved horses. I’ve dedicated my adult life to rescuing and working with them, and I truly believe in living a cruelty-free life. Horses have given me such joy throughout the years and even now, with my work rescuing equines through Artemis Farm Rescue, I’ve had the opportunity to give back to the animals I’ve always loved so much.”
Guest’s animal-friendly attitude inspired her own accessories and lifestyle label, and in 2015, she partnered

Former Eighties ‘It Girl’ Cornelia Guest to Write Memoir

There was no one quite like 1982’s Deb of the Year Cornelia Guest. Once called the first “celebutante” by The New York Times, she counted among her family friends her godparents, the Duke of Windsor and his wife Wallis Simpson, Truman Capote and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.

The daughter of socialite C.Z. Guest and her husband, Winston Guest (the polo champion cousin of Winston Churchill), Cornelia’s life as a deb once made headlines. She danced at Studio 54, moved to Hollywood to try acting, and briefly dated Sly Stallone.

In later years, she found her passion by turning her lifelong love of animals into animal rights activism and founded Artemis Rescue, a non profit animal sanctuary in Ancram, New York. She also became a vegan caterer and published a cookbook and entertaining guide: Cornelia Guest’s Simple Pleasures: A Healthy Seasonal Cooking & Easy Entertaining

Never one to follow an expected path, Guest is now ready to tell her story in a memoir, Then and Now, to be published next year by Rare Bird Books.

“I was so fortunate to have a childhood that was truly extraordinary,” Guest tells PEOPLE. “When I was little, my parents had a wonderful group of friends that I stayed close to throughout my teen and adult years. I remember coloring with Andy Warhol and then later, hanging out with him at Studio 54, trying on dresses with Oscar de la Renta, getting into mischief and traveling the world with so many notable friends and family.”

“I’ve always wanted to write a book about the wonderful people I met and learned from over the years; the people who profoundly influenced and impacted my life,” she adds. “I’m so thankful to my parents for everything they taught me and this book, about my life then and now, is a tribute to them.”

The Unexpected Wedding Guest

The Unexpected Wedding Guest

Wellington Estate, the Hamptons Reese stood On the small platform in the elegant sitting room furnished in eighteenth-century antiques, smoothing her hands down the satin. The wedding gown fit her waist just right, hugging her body to her hips before flaring in a dreamy swirl of tulle that floated to the floor, one hundred yards total. She had only one issue with the dress, and, unfortunately, the problem was getting bigger. Or technically, smaller. With a frown, she reached into her strapless bodice and adjusted her right breast. “Don’t bother.” Amber met her gaze in the full-length mirror, her words muffled by the pins in her mouth, her hands fingering the bodice at the seam. “We need cream puffs.” With a sigh, Reese dropped her hand to her side, staring at her reflection. Proof positive that God was indeed male. Because there could be no justice in a world that declared a woman must lose weight in her boobs first. “Is that the best my seamstress, bridesmaid and future sister-in-law can come up with?” She sent Amber a dry look. “Your breasts are shrinking so bring on the cream puffs?” The redhead’s face flushed with pleasure. “Your brother and I aren’t engaged.” “Yet,” Reese said with a smile. Amber removed the pins from her mouth. “We’re here to talk about your wedding,” she said. “And at this rate, you won’t have anything left to fill out your dress. Do you want the bodice looking like the empty bucket of a bulldozer as you make your way up the aisle?” Her friend stabbed a pin through the fabric under Reese’s left arm before she went on. “I told you to stop stressing about the wedding and let the event planner do her thing.” “She’s driving me crazy.” “You hired her to do a job,” Amber said as she continued to work, her voice firm. “So let her do it.” “But she keeps forgetting it’s my wedding,” Reese said. “Why else would she act as if she has such a vested interest in the bride and groom’s first dance?” She blew out a breath. “I swear I spend more time defending my choices to her than anything else.” Amber shot her a concerned look. “Keep this frantic pace up and I’ll be altering this dress the day of your wedding. Which, I might add” she jabbed the last pin into place “is only six days away.” The knot of anticipation tightened in Reese’s belly. Six days to ensure every detail was just right. But as she stared out of the second-floor window at the manicured grounds of Bellington Estategrounds that included several formal gardensa sense of peace rolled through her body. June in the Hamptons was gorgeous. Spring showers had done beautiful things to the one hundred acres that surrounded the twenty-five-bedroom, historical home, the closest thing to a castle that Reese could find. The perfect place for her fairy-tale wedding. But it wasn’t the antique-adorned rooms, the priceless artwork, or the towering stone turrets that had sold her on the location. Yes, the grounds were perfect fo

Guest Advice Columnist: Lorde!

Topical Magazine is delighted to have 18-year-old global pop music phenomenon Lorde joining us this week as our guest advice columnist! She’ll be taking your questions in this special edition issue and giving you her take on whatever you need advice on!

~

Dear Lorde,

I started a new job and one of my co-workers is this cute guy who recently graduated from NYU. He’s a total babe! I totally have a thing for him but I don’t want my romantic and professional life to clash, but I like him more and more everyday! My friends say I shouldn’t pursue it, but the more I ignore my crush, the more I like him! What should I do?!

-Allison Greenhalgh, 24, New York City

Allison,

Don’t let your friends be such a Gwyneth Paltrow. Oh, you should know I’ve replaced saying “buzz kill” with “Gwyneth Paltrow.” First, you need to find out more about him. Try to inconspicuously cut off a lock of his hair. Then try to inconspicuously get him to pee in a cup. Then inconspicuously show up at a protest he’s attending in Washington Square Park (he went to NYU, let’s be honest). Then inconspicuously corner him at his local bodega and ask him what he thinks about the possibility of you two getting romantically involved. This will determine the possibility of you two getting romantically involved.

Hope this helps!
-Lorde

~

Dear Lorde,

OMG!!! BIG fan here. HUGE fan, actually! I don’t even want to talk about my problem (I’m a 33-year-old nurse practitioner with a crippling addition to the lazy river at water parks). I just want to gush! I love your songs “Team” and “The Love Club.” How can I be just like you?!

-Cameron Lipkin, 33, Atlantic City

Cameron,

Everyone should honor their individuality, but if you want try some things that I sometimes do you can: amalgamate haute couture with fun sportswear. Google “DIY hexes.” Hang out by a creek. Walk into Ann Taylor Loft while burning sage. Make a mosaic of Sylvia Plath’s face out of baby teeth. Dip your hair in blood and whip it back and forth at a Lady Antebellum concert. Draw a pentagram in a highly concentrated area of body glitter on a sorority girl’s shoulder. Google “Is the Blair Witch lonely?” Have a hearty laugh at some popular teens at the mall.

Hope this helps!
-Lorde

~

Dear Lorde,

My friends and I started this new punk band called The Sexual Pen Pals. We were wondering if you’d consider us opening for you if we sent you some of our demos! Also, our question is: how do we combat any sort of creative ruts we may face along the way?

-Brian Dobson, 22, Brooklyn

Brian,

I accept this offer! I accept it with a passion of a thousand burning suns, the enthusiasm of a college freshman at their first extracurricular meeting, and the joy of finding out your favorite 90’s TV show has just been uploaded to Netflix. In regards to creative blocks: go rent a private room at a karaoke bar and scream yourself hoarse.

Hope this helps!
-Lorde

~

Dear Lorde,

My roller derby team, The Varicose Vein Vixens, is throwing our annual benefit BBQ and I feel like every year I’m always the one who is always doing everything. How do I tell my teammates I feel like I’m always picking up everyone’s slack without coming off as a Bitter Betsy?

-Sloan “Frosted Tip$ ” McEwen, 43, Pittsburgh

Sloan,

Smear the darkened, charred part of black forest ham underneath your eyes and take your frustration out on some interns by beating them with brooms. Once you’ve calmed down a bit, calmly express how you’ve been feeling to your teammates. Then go off on a 45 minute diatribe expressing how gross the watery discharge that comes out of a freshly opened bottle of ketchup is because, right?!?!

Hope that helps,
-Lorde

~

Dear Lorde,

I just had a really tough break-up. We have a close mutual friend who has a birthday coming up and my ex going to be there. I’m still heartbroken over him, what should I do when I inevitably bump into him?

-Jamie Richards, 19, Tampa

Jamie

Keep your head held high and when he asks how you’re doing keep repeatedly saying “I’m fine!” while building volume into a scream until he runs away.

Hope this helps!

Going to a Wedding? Don’t Be That Guest

‘Tis the season for attending weddings! Are you going to a wedding (or five) this summer? You too can flawlessly navigate the unspoken rules of weddings and avoid any guest gaffes with these tips from real-life brides and grooms.

Couple Conundrum: Late or Missing RSVP’s
Recent bride and groom, Emma and Adam, had large extended families and a wedding venue with a small capacity, meaning they weren’t able to include some friends on their original guest list simply because of space. When a sizeable chunk of RSVP’s failed to arrive, they assumed those guests weren’t planning to attend and decided to extend invitations to those they didn’t quite have room for originally. Unfortunately, their assumption was incorrect. More responses than they bargained for eventually rolled in and affected guest counts — which ultimately affected their budget and caused some serious stress with venue capacity.

    Pro Tip: RSVP on Time
Do the couple a favor and RSVP as quickly as possible, and certainly before the requested date. The RSVP card is one of the most important planning tools the couple has, but they need your cooperation for it to be effective. Show your enthusiasm and excitement for their big day by responding promptly. Texting doesn’t count! And don’t assume you have a plus one, unless the invitation specifically says so.

    Couple Conundrum: Duplicate Gifts
Last summer, brides-to-be Danielle and Stephanie spent weekend upon weekend meticulously curating their registries at various department stores, only to be gifted not one, but three of the same gift that wasn’t on their registry. After trying to return two of the three identical gifts, they discovered that the credit had been applied back to the gift-giver’s credit cards, much to their dismay…and embarrassment!

    Pro Tip: Use the Registry
The registry is there for a reason. Stick with it to avoid putting the couple in a potentially awkward situation. If you can’t find the couple’s registry ask a member of the family or bridal party. There are exceptions, of course, like personal and meaningful gifts, gift cards and cash.

    Couple Conundrum: Specific Dress Codes
When Becca was invited to an Indian wedding last year, she did her research on what to wear (at Indian weddings brighter is better!) and found a beautiful jewel-toned dress as opposed to something with a more neutral or conservative tone. She had an amazing time, felt beautiful and fit right in with the party. Three cheers for doing homework in advance!

    Pro Tip: Do Your Homework
A wedding is not the place to flaunt your new avant-garde look! If you’re unsure of the dress code, use the season or the wedding venue as a cue. Be sure to do your research, too, in case there are any important cultural preferences you should be aware of. And if all else fails, just ask a bridesmaid! They can always give you the scoop.

    Couple Conundrum: Unwanted Social Sharing
Facebook and Instagram may be great ways to share life’s special moments, but be careful. In many cultures it’s considered bad luck for the groom to see the bride before the wedding. Last fall one groom, John, unintentionally saw his bride, Juanita, before she walked down the aisle. One of Juanita’s bridesmaids had posted a photo of her getting ready on Instagram before the wedding had begun!

Pro Tip: Post with Caution While the overzealous bridesmaid certainly didn’t mean any harm, it’s a good lesson for us all. Be mindful with social media — especially at weddings — as posts can have unintended but serious consequences. Even though it’s tempting to post throughout the event, remember it’s the couple’s special day, so look for any guidelines. If you don’t see any instructions, just follow the couple’s lead!

Regardless of the situation, you can be sure that you don’t want to be that guest! You know the one. Avoid anything that makes you the center of attention. It’s never fun to have regrets the next morning. Pace yourself with the bubbly, participate in the activities, dance your heart out and have a blast celebrating. Just be sure to keep yourself in check. Soak in every moment of this special day and show your support for the newlyweds!

How to Be a Good Wedding Guest

6 Ways to Make Things Easier for the Groom and Bride-to-be

Forget Emily Post, forget the guides to etiquette — this is about how to be the kind of wedding guest the bride and groom want you to be. Just as with the guide for parents of the happy couple, this is — seriously — what brides and grooms wish their guests knew. Planning a wedding, though lovely and romantic, can be a very stressful process… and there are a few things you as a guest can do to make life a little easier on the happy couple.

    1. RSVP ASAP
Whether it’s yes or no, let the couple know as soon as possible whether you’ll attend — don’t wait until the RSVP deadline. The bride and groom are so excited after all their planning to receive the first RSVPs, so why not be the guests to give them that joy? Also, the “soonlyweds” may be aiming for a certain number of guests, so could be waiting for the first round of “no” RSVPs to activate a B-list of invitations. Thinking you don’t need to RSVP because of course the bride and groom know you’re coming? They don’t.

RSVPing no? Mention the reason, so you don’t leave the couple guessing if it’s because you don’t like their spouse-to-be. Don’t worry that you’re being rude by declining; the bride and groom understand not everyone can come, and it’s better they know early to count you out, rather than making spare escort cards and a just-in-case seating plan. If your answer for the moment is maybe, let the couple know that, and when you can give a definite reply: for example, you need a few weeks to arrange a baby-sitter. At least then the bride and groom know where things stand with your invitation.

Also, RSVP for the people on the invitation. Only if it says your name “and guest” is it polite to RSVP for a +1. If it says “and family” or the names of your children, your little ones are indeed invited, and your reply should make it clear which of those people will be attending.

    2. RSVP “officially”
Pay attention to the RSVP request. If the invitation includes an RSVP card, fill it out and post it back; if there is an email address or phone number to SMS, use them. The point is to make sure the soonlyweds know that, when you give your RSVP, it’s your official answer. Shortly after sending out save-the-dates for our own wedding, we saw some invitees at a party and they mentioned, “Ooh, we’d love to come!” Afterwards my groom and I were confused: Was that their official RSVP? How tipsy were they? Does “we’d love to come” mean “yes, we’re coming” or “it’s a shame we can’t?” If you reply in person, lead with “We’d like to give our official RSVP, and…” — just so it’s clear!

    3. Bring a gift
You wouldn’t show up to a birthday or house-warming party without a gift, so why do so for something more significant like a wedding? Anyone who thinks weddings are simply a gift-grab has clearly never organized one; big-day gifts don’t cover the costs of the event (let alone “the chair”), so no one is putting their nuptials together to make a profit. Of course, only buy a gift that’s within your means. Can’t afford one? Let the bride and groom know money is tight and you hope your presence will do well as a present (especially if it’s costing you money to join the wedding); they will of course understand. You could even offer to help with wedding preparations in lieu of a gift.

Not giving a gift also poses a conundrum for the bride and groom. In our case, by the time of our wedding, one-third of the guests had not given gifts. So could we now buy the remaining items on the registry, or do we need to keep some there for people who might buy later? And then it came time to buy thank-you cards… should we only buy for those who have already given gifts, or spend more on buying spares in case of late gifts?

Also, buy from the registry. Whether or not you think registries are tacky, you know its tips are items the happy couple want (or need), something they don’t already own, and they won’t receive two because it will be removed from the registry once you buy it. And, buy early. They won’t admit it, but the bride and groom are “registry stalking” — keeping tabs on their registry to see what’s being bought. (Partly necessary so they can see if they must add more gifts, or more gifts in a certain price range.) The bride and groom will be super excited to see the first items disappear from their registry, and will wonder who their mystery purchasers might be!

    4. Share dietary requirements
If soon before the big day you haven’t received questions about your dietary requirements, speak up — the couple probably hasn’t thought about it. In the month before the wedding, the bride and groom need to confirm the menu with their reception venue. Don’t assume your old friend the bride of course remembers you’re vegan, have food allergies or religious restrictions. Simply don’t like cucumber or prefer your steak cooked a certain way? Skip sharing. The reception venue probably doesn’t allow for too many or those kinds of exceptions; it’s difficult to feed such a large group and keep everyone happy! Forgot to share your dietary requirements until the night? Notify your waiter you need something different; don’t bother the bride and groom.

    5. Dress appropriately
Pay attention to any dress code on the invitation. The bride and groom have added it to achieve a certain atmosphere or theme at their wedding, and also because they don’t want any guests to feel embarrassed by being over-dressed (or under-dressed!).

Also, some pointers for female guests. Ladies, don’t wear white. Just don’t. And don’t gently ask the bride if it’s fine (“because you’ll be beautiful anyway so it’s not like I’ll draw attention from you”). It’s not fine, and she might feel pressured to say yes… and then feel awkward and resentful. Similarly, think twice before wearing black; you may have the cutest LBD ever, but if all female guests make the same sartorial move, the event will quickly look like a funeral. Lastly, pay attention to the invitation colors, like fonts and ribbons; it’s most likely one of those colors is the shade the bridesmaids will wear, so skip that color to avoid looking like a bridal party wannabe.

    6. Check before you ask
Got a question about the big day? Check the invitation, wedding website or emails from the happy couple regarding hotels, transport, directions, etc before you bother the bride and groom. They spent time putting together those resources for a reason, and if every guest checks every question with them, you’ll end up with stressed-out soonlyweds. Also, consider if your question is one that could be answered elsewhere (Google can help you plan your sightseeing itinerary) or can’t be answered at all (like what the weather will be like on the big day).

This advice goes double for the final week before the wedding, when the happy couple will likely be stressed, busy and nervous. If you have a burning question, ask the bridal party or a family member rather than take up the couple’s time… and don’t even think about contacting the bride and groom on the day of the wedding! Got a question or request during the wedding itself, like your table hasn’t received their drinks or the reception room is too warm? Ask a staff member or the wedding planner rather than bothering the happy couple.

What do you think is involved in being a good wedding guest? What do you wish your wedding guests knew to help make your life as bride and groom a little bit easier?

The Upside of a Destination Wedding: Tales of a Serial Wedding Guest

The invite came in the summer of 2013. A friend was marrying the man she’d met a few years before in an East Village cheese shop. Despite their cultural and religious differences—her father was a pastor in Phoenix; his family was Jewish and lived in Israel—their initial rendezvous over discounted Gruyere had been auspicious. They’d fallen in love, moved in together, and she’d begun to learn Hebrew. The wedding would take place in the hills of Jerusalem, in August. “I know it’s expensive and a long trip,” she told me. “No pressure to come. But you’re invited and it would be amazing if you did.”

Hilarious Couple Shows Us It’s TOO Easy To Cut Your Wedding Guest List

Trying to narrow down your wedding guest list may seem like an impossible task at first. Consider all of the family, friends, family friends, neighbors, co-workers and ex-lovers who saw your engagement news on Facebook and are eagerly awaiting the invitation.

In a video posted to the Upright Citizens Brigade YouTube channel on Tuesday, comedians (and real-life couple) Laura Grey and Jordan Klepper discover that slashing the guest list isn’t quite as difficult as they thought.

Grounds for elimination include bra size (if bigger than bride’s), weird bangs, lack of black friends and a preference for the American version of “The Office.”

If you get cut, it’s nothing personal. Well, actually, maybe it is.

Anna Gunn To Guest Star On ‘The Mindy Project’

Anna Gunn is trading in a meth empire for scrubs and will guest star on “The Mindy Project,” E! Online reports. She’ll be playing Mindy’s (Mindy Kaling) hero, Sheila Hamilton, a New York OB/GYN who tries to woo her from her current residency at Shulman & Associates.

Gunn, who recently won an Emmy for her role as Skyler White on the AMC series “Breaking Bad,” will appear in the 13th episode this season. It will be her first acting gig since the show’s finale, and viewers can safely assume her time on “The Mindy Project” will be less dramatic than her role on “Breaking Bad.”

Since beginning its second season back in September, “The Mindy Project” has already welcomed a number of guest stars such as James Franco, Adam Pally (the “Happy Endings” star has since become a series regular) and Timothy Olyphant. However, after Gunn’s role in one of the most talked about shows in recent television history, and on the heels of her Emmy win, this is a coup for “The Mindy Project.”

“The Mindy Project” airs Tues. at 9:30 p.m. EST on Fox.
