Dead or Alive 6 First Hands-On: Can Team Ninja Balance Familiar and Fresh?

When Dead or Alive 6’s producer/director Yohei Shimbori handed us the controller, the first thing we did was mash the punch button. The series’ heroine Kasumi performed a series of familiar open-handed strikes. Our opponent, Zack, tried to punch her in the face, but we were able to successfully time a hold counter attack, and Kasumi twisted Zack’s incoming hand, dropping him to the ground. As soon as he was back on his feet, we executed a throw. Kasumi jumped on top of Zack and mercilessly stamped on his head multiple times. Barely 10 seconds had passed, but it was enough to confirm one thing: This was still the good old Dead or Alive that gamers have come to love since the series’ first entry way back in 1996.

Gear.Club Unlimited Nintendo Switch Hands-On Preview

Gear.Club Unlimited is in the enviable, and risky, position as the first proper racing game on the  Nintendo Switch, and it succeeds, in context.

For a PC sim racing player, it’s easy to be frustrated at AAA simcade games that are severely limited by the lack of hardware availability. Why bother wrestling an ultra-realistic Koenigsegg with all the assists off when you’re stuck with a non-customizable wheel or a controller? These frustrations don’t exist with Gear.Club Unlimited, since the game doesn’t present itself as feathering the edge between real-life and virtual racing.

This isn’t to say that the game is completely lacking in physics, but rather that it has just enough of it. The real success is the game’s pick-up-and-play factor. The varying cars differentiate enough to translate through the controller. You can tell the difference between the weightiness of a BMW M4 and a Lotus Elise’s petite figure. The straightforward selection of driving assists will enable less experienced racers to attempt competing with the veterans. The hardest settings provide veteran racers enough of a challenge with the Switch Joy-Cons / Pro Controller to keep wanting to play, but without often-frustrating pseudo-realism. It’s fun in the way that older Need for Speed titles are fun. You pick up the controller, choose the car that you have on a wall poster, and race.

Hands-On with Total War: Warhammer 2’s Sadistic Skaven Faction

It was the worst kept secret in video games, but we’ve now finally got absolute, official confirmation: the Skaven are coming to Total War: Warhammer 2. The race of humanoid rats are one of four playable factions coming to September’s sequel, joining the High Elves, Dark Elves and Lizardmen.

Having now played the opening hour-or-so of the Skaven campaign, we’re happy to report that the murderous, subterranean-dwelling rodents offer some distinctly different gameplay options to what we’ve seen in the first game.

Simply, if inhabiting a secret under-world and indulging in surprise attacks from the dark sounds appealing to you then you’re going to adore the ugliness offered by the Skaven.

Hands-On With Agents of Mayhem’s Ensemble Action

The first thing Agents of Mayhem wants you to know is that it is not Saints Row 5. Volition / Deep Silver has drawn a hard line between the two, and they’re not wrong to – after having spent a few hours with the eponymous Agents, it’s clear the two will be very different experiences. That said, from the gunplay to the irreverent writing and even some crossover character nods, Agents of Mayhem seems like it could easily exist within the same universe – and that’s not a bad thing at all. If the characters in Pulp Fiction would go see Kill Bill at the movies, then Agents of Mayhem is what the Third Street Saints would watch for Saturday morning cartoons.
