Parfums Christian Dior Heads to Arles for Photo Show

PICTURE PERFECT: Parfums Christian Dior is supporting the LUMA Foundation’s photography archive program, which this year is honoring Annie Leibovitz during its Les Rencontres de la Photographie international festival in Arles, France, that runs from July 3 to Sept. 24.
As part of this, Dior is backing a retrospective called “Annie Leibovitz: The Early Years 1970-1983 / Archive Project #1.” It involves 8,000 black-and-white photos from her series taken in New York in the Seventies.
As a first in Arles, the house also is opening a space in the Galerie du Cloître, titled “Dior, The Art of Color,” which takes its name and some images from a book released in the fall. That tome showcases creations from Dior’s makeup maestros — including Peter Philips and Tyen – inspired by 12 hues, which are photographed by the likes of Richard Burbridge or Guy Bourdin and linked to major works of art from John Malevich, Jean Cocteau and Andy Warhol, among others.

Films by Serge Luten — who in 1967 became Dior’s first artistic and image director for makeup — are also on display.
Dior’s connection to color cosmetics harks back to 1949, with the launch of its lipsticks, Rouge Dior.

Accused By Dozens, Bill Cosby Heads To Trial Over Single Incident

Bill Cosby’s long-awaited criminal trial on charges that he drugged and molested a friend in his home begins Monday in Norristown, Pennsylvania, near Philadelphia.

The 79-year-old comedy legend faces three counts of aggravated indecent assault involving a 2004 visit to his suburban home by Andrea Constand. If convicted, he faces up to a decade behind bars.

Constand, who worked for the Temple University women’s basketball team, claimed that Cosby inappropriately touched her after she took a pill he said would help her relax. Cosby, who’s pleaded not guilty, has claimed he provided her with Benadryl and that they had a consensual encounter.

It was only a couple of years ago that Cosby held the status of a respected elder in the entertainment industry. He was an early mainstream African-American star, remembered fondly for his clean stand-up comedy act and a string of television programs from the 1960s to 1990s, including “I Spy” and the top-rated “The Cosby Show.”  But he’s largely kept out of sight since at least 60 women have accused Cosby of drugging, sexually assaulting or initiating unwanted contact with them, according to The Washington Post.

Despite the volume of accusations, only Constand’s complaint yielded a criminal case. Investigators have cited the statute of limitations and lack of evidence in declining to file charges over alleged incidents that span half a century.

As the trial neared, Cosby participated in limited interviews with a black newspapers group and satellite radio host Michael Smerconish. Cosby told Smerconish that the dozens of accusers were “piling on” and that racism “could be” a factor affecting his case. His daughter, Evin Cosby, became part of the public relations campaign by writing an essay last month that defended her father against “the cruelty of the media.”

Still, most public support for Cosby has evaporated, according to Angela Nelson, an associate professor in Bowling Green State University’s department of popular culture.

“It has not helped at all. People said: ‘You are a hypocrite,’” Nelson said.

In recent court appearances, Cosby has used a cane and often had help walking. He’s reportedly in failing health and losing his sight.

A previous district attorney investigated Constand’s claims and declined to charge Cosby. In turn, Constand sued and eventually reached an undisclosed settlement with Cosby.

A deposition from the lawsuit is hotly contested evidence in the criminal trial. Judge Stephen O’Neill has ruled that jurors can hear excerpts in which Cosby admitted that he’d given Quaaludes to women while sexually pursuing them. The defense sought to block the deposition, saying that Cosby answered the questions only because then-District Attorney Bruce Castor agreed not to press charges.

“His deposition testimony is really the most damaging because it does really corroborate the witness’s testimony,” Delaware Law School professor Judith Ritter said, referring to Constand.

The defense and prosecution had also argued over how many other accusers may testify against Cosby. O’Neill decided that only one accuser, known as Prior Alleged Victim Six in court filings, may testify about an alleged assault in 1996. Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele, who campaigned by promising to prosecute Cosby, had wanted to present the accusations of 13 women.

Perhaps most important will be Constand’s testimony. She waited until 2005 to lodge a complaint against Cosby, but until then they had continued some contact. Ritter expects the defense to focus on these points.

“It will be so much about how it comes across to the jury,” said Ritter. “If she stands up under cross-examination, they [the prosecution] have a really good chance at prevailing.”

Cosby is not expected to take the stand in the trial, which is expected to last about two weeks.

The jury is made up of seven men and five women, Two jurors are black and the rest are white. The jury was chosen from Pittsburgh after the defense argued it would be too difficult to find impartial jurors in Montgomery County.

Luis Valenzuela Heads to Art Wynwood With Cuban-Inspired Art, Starting New Project for the Blind

NEXT STOP, CUBA: For the sixth edition of the upcoming Art Wynwood, eco-friendly fashion designer Luis Valenzuela has created pieces inspired by Cuban artist Cundo Bermúdez. A few of the turbans and dresses are reminiscent of shapes and silhouettes from Bermúdez’s work including the 1995 oil on canvas “Lady Sitting at the Table.” Cernuda Arte is hosting a panel discussion in conjunction with the Coral Gables Museum highlighting the museum exhibit “Cuban Art in the 20th Century: Cultural Identity and the International Avant-Garde,” which bows Jan. 21 and runs through April 23. There will also be a special Cuban art exhibit at the fair.
At the opening night preview, models will be on hand wearing the dresses and turbans Valenzuela has designed. If any of the VIP guests (or any other art fans) decide they need to add his dresses to their closets, they will have the option to buy these unique pieces in his booth at Art Wynwood. The show runs Feb. 16-20. The street artist and Obey clothing founder Shepard Fairey will be in town to pick up the Tony Goldman Lifetime Achievement Award.
Unrelated to the upcoming show, Valenzuela is creating small-scale 3-D replicas of well-known museum art pieces

The Annoying Kids’ Songs Parents Can’t Get Out Of Their Heads, Remixed

One unexpected consequence of raising little kids is the never-ending repetition of annoying kids’ songs that get stuck in your head and cause you to sing things like “Zooming through the sky, Little Einsteins” when you’re all alone.

In his latest “New Father Chronicles” video, dad La Guardia Cross put together a video of parents singing those irritatingly addictive songs, which have “brainwashed” them for life.

It’s a delightful medley of lines like “This is the song that never ends,” “Doc McStuffins, Doc McStuffins” and “If you’re happy and you know it!”

Cross’ caption sums up this source of parental anguish: “These songs haunt our dreams. Help us.”

Michelle Obama Heads to Cambodia

FLOTUS IN SEASON: After sharing the ins and outs of her “Let Girls Learn” initiative with Akin Abe, the wife of Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Michelle Obama touched down in Cambodia Friday to spread the word with another fellow First Lady Bun Rany. FLOTUS stepped off Air Force One wearing a Carolina Herrera sleeveless silk printed dress in a red carnation print from the designer’s spring collection.
Obama is in the midst of a five-day tour to bolster the initiative which aims to help educate the estimated 62 million girls who do not attend school in 11 countries targeted by the administration. A Princeton and Harvard Law alum, the First Lady has repeatedly emphasized the value of her own education when speaking publicly during President Obama’s tenure. Having started and run her own company for more than three decades, the self-taught Herrera, a mother of four daughters, certainly can appreciate the First Lady’s efforts to try to better the lives of other girls through learning and perseverance.
