Pierce Brosnan and Longtime Wife Keely Shaye Smith Hold Hands on Way to The Late Show

Pierce Brosnan and his wife Keely Shaye Smith have been together for over 20 years, but the couple looked like newlyweds on Monday — walking hand-in-hand as they headed into a filming of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert at New York City’s famed Ed Sullivan Theatre.

The former James Bond actor, 64, was dressed to kill in a royal blue suit and matching tie, which he paired with a crisp white shirt and black shoes.

Smith, 54, was all smiles by his side wearing a fitting little black dress. She paired the look with yellow flats, a silvery tassel necklace, and a black sequin clutch.

RELATED: How Pierce Brosnan Found Love Again With Wife Keely Shaye Smith

The couple have been married for nearly 16 years, tying the knot in Ireland in August 2001, after first meeting in Mexico in 1994.

Brosnan has been effusive in his praise of his wife in the past. “I love her vitality, her passion,” Brosnan gushed to the Independent in March 2016. “She has this strength that I wouldn’t be able to live without. When Keely looks at me, I go weak.”

Spending quality time together is a key ingredient of their happy marriage, as he shared with PEOPLE in April.

“My wife and I took a short road trip up to Santa Barbara — we were going for a romantic weekend and to look at houses and drink great wine,” Brosnan said. “We didn’t listen to any music, but we just listened to the sounds of each other’s voices and sorted out the world.”

The pair have two sons together: Dylan, 20, and Paris, 16.

He also has a 33-year-old son, Sean, from his previous marriage to Australian actress Cassandra Harris, who died in 1991 of ovarian cancer. The disease also claimed their daughter Charlotte in 2013.

Brosnan’s new movie, The Foreigner, hits theaters Oct. 13.

Saks & League to Save Lake Tahoe Hold Annual Oscar de la Renta Luncheon

Oscar de la Renta’s Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia, special guests at the annual Saks Fifth Avenue and League to Save Lake Tahoe luncheon last Saturday, decided to get a close-up look at the nature under threat — and got more than they bargained for.
“Laura and I were going to do a hike at 6:30 in the morning when we saw a bear tear right out of the neighbor’s gate, which was quite the wake-up call. That thing was running fast and I was terrified,” Garcia related. The pair ended up waiting it out and completed their hike, and also enjoyed swimming and waterskiing on the lake.
The centerpiece of the event was a showing of the resort 2018 collection in front of 650 guests at the Schumacher family estate on the shores of the famed body of water.
Created 48 years ago when Bill Blass began showing his collection there to a small group of clients and friends, the event has evolved into a benefit luncheon and fashion show partnership with Oscar de la Renta and Saks Fifth Avenue for almost 20 years. This year’s event raised a record $ 1.1 million.

Blac Chyna Puts Rob Kardashian Drama on Hold to Flaunt Her Curves in Skimpy Two-Piece Outfit

Blac Chyna isn’t letting her legal drama with ex-fiancé Rob Kardashian keep her from having a good time.

The reality star, 29, stepped out Monday night to host an event at Ace Of Diamonds strip club in West Hollywood.

Chyna wore a bedazzled two-piece ensemble that showed off her slim waist and a hint of skin on the midriff. After recently sporting a rainbow wig and a wavy blonde bob, she wore her hair in a chic lime-hued lob.

Inside the club, she gave fans a head-to-toe look at her outfit, taking a Snapchat video to show off the night’s look.

RELATED VIDEO: Blac Chyna Speaks Out About Legal Action Against Rob Kardashian on GMA

The outing comes after Kardashian’s social media rampage against Chyna on July 5, during which he repeatedly shared graphic and expletive-ridden content about her on Twitter and Instagram and accused her of drug use, alcohol abuse and infidelity.

In response, Chyna retained high-powered civil rights attorney Lisa Bloom (Walter Mosley is co-counsel) and was granted a set of restraining orders against Kardashian — he was ordered by a judge to stay at least 100 ft. away from his ex and is banned from posting personal photos or information about her and her children (King Cairo, 4, with ex Tyga and their shared daughter Dream Renée, 8 months).

In an interview with ABC News that aired partly on Good Morning America earlier this month, Chyna said she was “devastated” by Kardashian’s actions.

“How could somebody post these pictures of me?” she said. “This is a person that I trusted. I just felt betrayed.”

“He doesn’t respect me,” she added. “So if you can’t respect me, you have to respect the law.”

Though Kardashian, 30, has been mum since the tweet spree, a source close to Kardashian’s famous family told PEOPLE last week that the reality stars are “deeply disappointed and frustrated with Rob.”

“He’s made a difficult situation even worse,” said the source. “At this stage, the primary concern is protecting Dream from all this nastiness.”

Elizabeth Gilbert And Girlfriend Rayya Elias Hold Commitment Ceremony

Eat, Pray, Love author Elizabeth Gilbert and girlfriend Rayya Elias are more committed to each other than ever.

In a beautiful post shared on Facebook Tuesday, the 47-year-old writer ― who split from husband José Nunes just under a year ago ― announced that she and Elias had held a “simple and spontaneous ceremony of love” surrounded by close family and friends.

Gilbert wrote that the ceremony wasn’t “legally binding,” just a “private celebration of what we have long known to be true: We belong to each other.”

The ceremony’s timing had special significance; as Gilbert noted in the Facebook post, Elias ― a fellow writer and Gilbert’s long-time best friend ― has been battling pancreatic and liver cancer for the last few years:

“More difficult days are to come,” Gilbert wrote. “It doesn’t get easier from here. Rayya’s illness is grave. But our love is strong. We will walk together as far as we can go together. After that, it all gets turned over to God.”

Elias is a musician and the author of Harley Loco: A Memoir of Hard Living, Hair, and Post-Punk From the Middle East to the Lower East Side.

In an equally moving Facebook post last September, Gilbert wrote that romance blossomed between the two women after Elias was diagnosed with pancreatic and liver cancer this past spring.

She also revealed that the intensity of her relationship with Elias played a part in the end of her marriage last spring.

“Death — or the prospect of death — has a way of clearing away everything that is not real, and in that space of stark and utter realness, I was faced with this truth: I do not merely love Rayya; I am in love with Rayya,” Gilbert wrote.

Reem Acra to Hold Bridal Fashion Show at Tiffany Flagship on Fifth Avenue

ACRA’S BRIDAL MARCH: Reem Acra won’t just be using Tiffany & Co.’s Fifth Avenue flagship to debut her spring bridal collections. The designer also plans to create wedding gowns and dresses inspired by Tiffany style and glamour.
While not a brand collaboration, Tiffany first connected with Acra when one of her gowns was featured as part of the Moda Operandi exhibition at the store last fall. Afterward, Acra “shared her affinity for the Tiffany brand,” a Tiffany spokesman said Monday.
Two hundred guests are expected at the April 18 fashion show. But there will be no cobranding or cross-promoting of the 20-style collection beyond the event invitations, the Tiffany spokesman said.
By staging a bridal show at Tiffany, Acra will be following in the footsteps of Carolina Herrera, who held one there in 2009 inspired by Vincent Van Gogh, Henri Matisse and other artists. And another bridal powerhouse, Vera Wang, teamed with Tiffany for a runway show at the Audi Fashion Festival in Singapore in 2011. Acra declined comment Monday through a spokesman.
Acra is celebrating her own anniversary this year — 20 years in business. The designer has been spending a lot of time in Dubai, where she’s shooting “Fashion Star” for Dubai

The FCC just gave you a reason to hold off on buying a 4K TVOver-the-air 4K broadcasts are coming, but you might want to hold off at getting a new UHD set just yet. The Federal Communications Commission voted Thursday to open discussions on the deployment of a next-generation broadcast-TV standard that should offer picture quality up to 4K Ultra High Definition and better antenna reception than today’s over-the-air digital signals. Like 2009’s transition to digital TV signals, this upgrade’s primary sales pitch is about a better picture — not just high definition, but the Ultra High Definition (UHD) 4K resolution that today remains largely confined to streaming-video services and Blu-ray discs.

FYI, The Hair On Your Head Can Hold Up To The Weight Of 2 Elephants

Just a heads-up: your hair has super strength.

Research tells us that a single strand of hair can hold approximately three ounces in weight. That may not seem like much, but take a look at the video above ― you’ll see that one hair can withstand the weight of over a dozen pennies without breaking.

If one hair can hold that much weight, how much can all the hair on your head hold? The answer is staggering. One head of hair can hold up to 12 tons, or the weight of two elephants.

So what makes your hair so freakishly strong?

Human hair is made of keratin, a powerful structural protein found in horse hooves, animal claws, and our outer layer of skin. Keratin’s cross-linking nature allows for hair’s unbelievable tensile strength, i.e. the force required to pull something like rope or wire to the point where it breaks.

Your hair is naturally tough, but there are certain behaviors that can weaken its tensile strength. Your hair can become dry and brittle if you don’t ingest enough vitamins or protein. Moisture and temperature can also have an effect on your hair’s texture.

So if you want your hair to be Connie Britton-level flawless, eat plenty of protein, protect your hair from sun damage and get trims every six to eight weeks. Your hair will be Rapunzel-ready in no time.

James converted a critical three-point play with 2:09 left for the Cavs, who blew an 18-point lead in the second half and fell behind with 8 minutes left in the fourth quarter before making several clutch plays down the stretch.

“Close Your Eyes, Hold Hands:” The Inspiration Behind the Novel

2015-05-22-1432296362-180571-img_5138.jpg

It’s one of those classic, absolutely reasonable questions–that is, alas, as impossible to answer briefly as the meaning of life. But I am asked it often. All novelists are.

Where do your ideas come from?

The glib answer–always offered with a smile–is this: “Macy’s.”

The reality is that each of my 17 novels sprang from a very different seed and grew in a very different fashion. My most recent novel, “Close Your Eyes, Hold Hands,” is a case in point.

Emily Shepard, the 17-year-old Vermonter who narrates the book, was born in Beirut–or, at the very least, she was conceived there. It was December 2012, and I had arrived in the city while on a seven-day speaking tour in Lebanon. My plane landed around 3:30 in the afternoon, which my body clock adamantly told me was really 10:30 at night. I went out to dinner with my hosts from one of the universities, and returned to my hotel around 11 p.m.–at about the time I would be rising if I were back home in Vermont. I had slept on the plane, but not very much. I was exhausted and knew I should go right to bed, since the next day was going to begin with a breakfast meeting.

But I didn’t go to sleep, because I had started reading a novel on the flight and had to finish it. It was riveting. The book? Emma Donoghue’s “Room.” It wasn’t simply the plot that held me fast, as taut as it is; it was the narrator. As a novelist, I was dazzled by the authenticity of the voice Donoghue had created for her five-year-old male storyteller. That’s right, a little boy named Jack shares with us the wrenching, adult story of his and his mother’s imprisonment in a shed, and his mother’s desperate attempt to save them both.

I finished the novel around two in the morning in Beirut, and knew I wanted my next novel to be a first-person tale with a voice that genuine and unexpected. I had no idea, however, who that storyteller would be. An important detail, I know.

Ten days later I was back in my beloved 802. (We have just one area code here in Vermont: 802.) I went to lunch with a friend of mine, Annie Ramniceanu, a therapist who at the time was working with teens in trouble. She told me how a couple of homeless kids–teens who were falling through the system–had built igloos against the Lake Champlain cold out of trash bags filled with wet, frozen leaves, and I knew instantly the novel I wanted to write.

The very idea of a teen girl living alone in one of those igloos broke my heart. That image haunted me–and spurred me on.

And I knew my narrator. I knew Emily Shepard was a cutter and Oxycontin addict, and an aspiring poet with a girl crush on Emily Dickinson. She was a homeless kid and an orphan trying desperately to keep it together after a Fukushima-scale meltdown of Vermont’s lone nuclear plant.

Most of my novels begin very much like this: an inspiration. An anecdote. An unexpected synaptic connection.

Now, “Close Your Eyes, Hold Hands” is not the first time I’ve had a female narrator share with my readers a story. “Midwives,” “Trans-Sister Radio,” “Secrets of Eden,” and “The Sandcastle Girls” had female narrators, too.

But, as I will reveal in my post here next week, this was the first time I found myself texting my teenage daughter for hipster-speak synonyms for “hookup” and “stoned.”

Stay tuned.

(The paperback of “Close Your Eyes, Hold Hands” arrives this Tuesday, on May 26.)

Music I (Mostly) Hold Dear: Lerdahl String Quartets, 1-3

Fred Lerdahl, composer and theorist, has written three string quartets a cycle that are important to the literature for this medium in the 21st century. There is a pedagogic nature to the writing, as the pieces teach you what they are about as they go along, and they are written in spiral form, whereby each successive phrase, and quartet, is an elaboration or development on the previous.

The first quartet is introspective, probing and inquisitive. It begins with the simplest of intervals, as in perfect fifths and major seconds. These intervals gradually become more complex, the density fuller and move to a free chromaticism. The phrases come one after the other generally without a break — they are mostly of a lyrical, if anodyne, nature. The rhythms are episodic, rarely allowing for any sort of build up into anything like momentum. Since the work is mostly introspective, it is also mostly quiet. Like the Bartok quartets, and many others of the latter 20th century, it exploits the timbral possibilities of the instruments utilizing pizzicatos (the plucking of the strings with the fingers), sul ponticello (a nasal quality achieved by positioning the bow very close to the bridge) and even a striking of the wood of the bow against the strings, all with great frequency. There are stop-on-a-dime quick alternations from the playful to the ruminative, and the use of the widest registral space is axiomatic and prolific. One doesn’t hear any long sustained emotive place, but many that follow on top of each other in rapid succession. As the variations grow in size they become more diffuse, even discursive, in organization.

The second quartet is formed of off-balance peripatetic rhythms, thus again there is rarely a sense of flow. The atmosphere is ascerbic, constructed rather than easily formed. It is in two parts or two variations. Each has a quiet introduction, a development, a climax, a scherzo of sorts and a coda. This is emotionally charged music. Phrases don’t seem to end as much as to morph into the next affective space. There is not a lot of breathing in this work, but rather a rush of ideas (as a river doesn’t breath). There are syrupy glissandos mixed with sounds of the plucking of the strings. The materials themselves are elusive and hard to grasp.

The third quartet starts with a rush of materials, almost as if it is in mid-phrase, which of course it almost is, as it is a final variation in this ever-expanding spiral of variations. But a twenty plus minute length can’t be composed simply of one phrase and thus it is indeed formed of materials of widely differing emotive content, from angry bursts to internal gibberishings. It even has the first truly extended section of any of the three quartets, a perpetuo moto of sextuplets, that astonishingly provides the first stable and extended section of the entire cycle, even though it is a whirlwind of notes. It is immensely welcomed, if perhaps a little too late in its arrival. It is proceeded by expressionistic counterpoint, quick alternations of the highest and lowest registers, angular stabs from one instrument that seek to destroy the texture of the others, at which it succeeds. The atmosphere is dark and macabre. The piece finishes with a reversal of the opening chords of the first quartet, a bit of very tidy housekeeping that certainly works to close off the cycle.

The final and third quartet was written almost forty years after the first. It seems a little odd that Lerdahl could enter that same world, thinking it would be fresh and vital, and that his musical and psychological place wouldn’t, or shouldn’t, be quite different. If the first holds newness and freshness, and the second perhaps a modest extension of the world of the first into new terrain, the third seems a traversal of terrain already plumbed for as much as it can yield.

The entire cycle is self-referential and moves in a Proustian stream of consciousness with reflections upon reflections coming to the surface in it’s spoken rhythms and gnarled pitch language. There is not quite enough material, nor that which is sufficiently differentiated, to sustain this architecture of an hour’s duration. The lack of harmonic motion, oddly not a part of Lerdahl’s language, makes for a certain wandering quality. There are moments of textual simplicity but mostly the music moves with great rapidity and little explanation. But while the work is mystifying, almost arcane — it is never boring!

Everything is Transient (So Hold On Tightly)

Two years ago on Thanksgiving, not long after I had moved here from London, I was driving through LA with my partner’s sister after picking up a few forgotten items from the grocery store.

Stopped at a traffic light I noticed a large crowd of people camped out along the road. My heart ached. “How unfair life is,” I said to Juliana. “Here we are on our way home to be with family and friends, and these people don’t even have a roof over their head.” She looked at me and laughed and I realized that this was one of those “foreign” moments I often find myself in. These people didn’t need soup. Black Friday was a mere 15 hours away, and so was that new flatscreen TV.

Since then I have seen how, in my own life and the lives of those around me, the worship of self and stuff continues to hold its position as the cornerstone of American culture. In response to this, I found myself wanting to explore people’s reaction to the impermanence inherent in both of these.

Last August, I traveled to the Northern California coast to participate in Project’s 387’s inaugural artist residency. Project 387 had accepted my proposal to create a series of chalk pastel portraits in the forest as a means to study human attachment and its effects on our wellbeing. Inspired by Japanese philosophy, the portraits were to be left to decay in the forest and provide viewers with a mile-long walking meditation on the transience all things.

Heavily influenced by Zen Buddhism, Japanese aesthetics are grounded in a commitment to facing things as they really are — not as we want them to be. In stark contrast to our Western ideals of beauty, Japan holds imperfection, asymmetry and, perhaps most important of all, impermanence as the highest aesthetic values. The ancient Japanese term “mono no aware” refers to the powerful emotional experience felt in response to fleeting beauty. It is precisely the transience of the cherry blossom that elevated its status to the country’s national flower.

During my two week stay on the 150 acre property, I spent more than a hundred hours meticulously depicting local faces on tree stumps and logs deep in the forest. I interviewed and photographed six people for the project: the residency’s director, her parents (who were the owners of the property), a local man who had worked on the land for more than 15 years, a Mexican immigrant who had maintained and repaired the property for more than 10 years, and a community nurse practitioner to whom the family had offered residence. Each individual shared their story with me and told me how their lives had taken them to this remote patch of land on the Californian coast.

Syd, 2 and 3 months later

On the last day of Project 387, the doors were opened to the public and many people walked through the forest to find the hidden faces. I talked with them about the philosophy underlying the work and received many enthusiastic, nodding heads.

The conversations, however, quickly turned to advice on how to protect the pieces for the future. “Spray them in a protective sealant!” “Cover them in plastic sheeting!” “Cut them out of the land and mount them on the wall!”

After I left the residency, the pursuit of preservation persisted. The property’s owners covered all the work in plastic and even gave one piece away to the portrait’s subject. I found myself indignant, feeling that my desire for impermanence had been ignored. And there it was, that feeling that the project had aimed to suppress: attachment.

Jose’s hand, 2 and 3 months later

I felt I had the right to control the process because I created it; the landowners felt they had the right to preserve the art because it was on their land; the portrait subject felt he had the right to keep it because it was of his face. That’s a whole lot of attachment to emerge from a study on letting go.

Over the past few months, I’ve questioned why the project evolved in the way that it did and why it was so important for all of us to preserve some part of it. Syd, the landowner, wanted to be able to share the portraits with her friends and family. Bobby felt privileged to be the subject of a painting and wanted to keep it. And me? I had found refuge in the delusional belief that I could control the world around me.

maureen

Maureen, 3 months later

When confronted with impermanence — in ownership, in an object, or even in an ideal — we were all desperate to hold on tight. The cultural microcosm that evolved on this remote piece of land highlighted to me the compulsion with which we overlay myths of permanence on the ephemeral world in which we find ourselves. Both necessary and functional, these myths help us construct a sense identity and self.

Perhaps, then, it is because we have no other choice that we spend our lives building castles in the sand as the water laps our toes.

Psycho Steve – I Swam the Solent to Freedom. No Jail Can Hold Me

Psycho Steve – I Swam the Solent to Freedom. No Jail Can Hold Me

When a GBP 1 million construction deal starts to go pear shaped, and a London heavy mob working for the opposition ransack his house, Stephen Moyle is out for revenge. In a tale of violence and adventure via the North of England and Canada, Stephen recounts the events that led to a 3 and a half year jail term and his eventual sectioning. Having taken revenge of the mob that was terrorising his family and business deals, Stephen was imprisoned in HMP Lewis; but with the voices of God Almighty and the Devil guiding his thoughts Stephen’s actions on the inside were to get him moved to HMP Camp Hill, Isle of Wight, from which he was to make his daring escape. Having scaled the prison walls and made his way through the razor wire, a scratched and bloody Stephen set off to swim across the Solent back to his family. His escape mobilised the D11 specialist police unit and the hunt began…Whilst on the run, Stephen returned to his scamming and thieving ways, but despite it all he found time to marry his long-term girlfriend Judith. But after the wedding things went from bad to worse as the voice of God was still present in Stephen’s thoughts; after a publican is almost killed the D11 squad close in and Stephen is returned to prison. Stephen is eventually released but his spell on the outside is short lived when he is re-arrested for GBH on his wife. At the court hearing, Stephen was sectioned for life and sent to Broadmoor Secure Hospital.
