Parley for the Oceans to Be Honored for Innovation at Fashion Awards in London

THE INNOVATOR: Parley for the Oceans’ environmental mission will be honored by the British Fashion Council at this year’s Fashion Awards.
Cyrill Gutsch, the organization’s founder, is set to receive the Special Recognition Award for Innovation, a new accolade added to the award ceremony’s lineup last year and first received by Stella McCartney.
The BFC said that it wants to honor the company’s effort to “highlight the devastating effects of plastic on our environment” and to “turn a global problem into an opportunity” by spearheading creative collaborations that look at new ways of designing and consuming products.
Adidas has been one of Parley’s most recognized collaborators since 2015. The two have produced shoes made of yarns and filaments recycled from ocean waste, as well as full apparel collections for Adidas Outdoor, produced using bottles that were turned into thread.
The company has also worked with Stella McCartney on a footwear capsule last year and partnered with Porter magazine and model Anja Rubik to create an issue that raised awareness on marine pollution.
Other honorees at the awards include Miuccia Prada, who is set to receive the Outstanding Achievement Award.
The ceremony will take place on Dec. 10 at the Royal Albert Hall.

Meghan Markle Reveals the Secret Way Her Wedding Veil Honored Her First Date with Prince Harry

It doesn’t get more romantic than this.

In a sneak peek from the upcoming HBO documentary Queen of the World, Meghan Markle opens up about the secret tribute to her first date with Prince Harry hidden within her spectacular 16-foot wedding veil.

While getting a chance to see her dress for the first time after tying the knot in May, Meghan, 37, reveals the special significance behind a “piece of blue fabric” stitched inside.

“Somewhere in here there’s a piece of blue fabric that’s stitched inside — it was my something blue,” Meghan remarks while inspecting the veil in the video above.

Sweetly, she adds, “It’s fabric from the dress that I wore on our first date.”

Of course, the cathedral-length veil also represented a special connection to the Commonwealth.

The bride’s headpiece, made from silk tulle, featured a trim of hand-embroidered flowers from each of the 53 counties in the Commonwealth, the family of nations linked to the U.K., in threads and organza.

“I’m really over the moon to find out that I would make this choice for our day together,” Meghan says in another clip. “And I think the other members of the family had a similar reaction and just appreciation for the fact that we understand how important this is for us and the role that we play, and the work that we’re going to continue to do within the Commonwealth countries.”

Meghan adds: “It was good news all around, I think, so I hope people like it as much as I liked helping to create it.”

Designer Clare Waight Keller previously told PEOPLE that the idea came to her after several conversations with Meghan about what “story” she wanted to tell with the celebration.

“There was a conversation early on about the story that we were going to tell through this wedding,” she said. “Part of what I wanted to do was talk to her about what type of stories they could be. The fact that her and Prince Harry will be working a lot in the Commonwealth was something that I thought was really intriguing and could be something built on to be part of the day.”

“We had different conversations back and forth and I came up with the idea of maybe representing each of the countries, the 53 countries of the Commonwealth, through their flora and fauna,” she added. “We both loved the story of that. It also meant that single one of those countries also journeyed up the aisle with her. It was a really poetic moment.”

The documentary features members of the royal family speaking about Queen Elizabeth and the Commonwealth — and it will air just before Harry and Meghan head to Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Tonga on their first official tour of Commonwealth nations.

A palace source previously told PEOPLE that Meghan takes part in “a conversation, a stand-up chat” for the film. The series will also feature appearances from Harry, Prince Charles and Prince William.

Queen of the World premieres Monday, Oct. 1 on HBO at 8 p.m.

Exclusive: Kim Kardashian West to Be Honored at CFDA Awards

If Donatella Versace, Naomi Campbell and Carolina Herrera, along with most of the biggest names in American fashion and various celebrity dates/presenters weren’t enough, Kim Kardashian West will grace the CFDA Fashion Awards next month as an honoree. Kardashian West is to be the first recipient of the CFDA Influencer Award.
According to CFDA president and chief executive officer Steven Kolb, it was all Tommy Hilfiger’s idea during the board meeting to decide the recipients of this year’s special honors. “Tommy Hilfiger said, ‘If you think about influencers and how they’ve changed our industry, I think we should acknowledge that,’” said Kolb. “[The board] all agreed that Kim was someone who has really impacted the industry and has changed the way brands are presented. She’s a friend of a lot of the designers and has had great influence on fashion globally.” Kolb said that with few exceptions — Rei Kawakubo and Johnny Depp among them — a condition of receiving a special award is mandatory attendance, to which Kardashian West agreed almost immediately.
Kolb couldn’t say whether the Influencer Award would be an ongoing thing after this year, but he did note the benefits that come with honoring a one-woman tentpole like

Last year, The Center honored Hillary Clinton at the fund-raiser, which brought in more than $ 1.75 million to support its various programs. Marc Jacobs was also honored with the organization’s Visionary Award, explaining how Wintour’s Met Gala gives him a certain level of social anxiety each year.

NEW YORK — In regard to this year’s National Design Award for fashion, Slow and Steady Wins the Race really has won.
The company and founder Mary Ping will be honored by the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum at the Oct. 19 gala at its Arthur Ross Terrace and Garden.

I was constantly looking at how the structure of the system existed. Maybe this was feeding into the fact that I was writing five papers every two weeks and there was all this analysis going in my head,” she explained. “While my parents were very supportive in the idea, it was not the most practical hope for me to go into fashion. Pierre Bergé Honored by King of Morocco

CHRISTMAS DECORATION: With the Musée Yves Saint Laurent Marrakech set to open in Morocco in October, Pierre Bergé’s longstanding ties with the country continues to deepen. Bergé on Thursday at the royal palace of Marrakech was decorated by King Mohammed VI of Morocco with the Grand Cross of the Order of Ouissam Alaouite for services rendered to the Moroccan state.
Also present at the private ceremony were Madison Cox and Quito Fierro, vice president and secretary general of the Jardin Majorelle Foundation, respectively.
Bergé first traveled to Morocco in the mid-Sixties with Yves Saint Laurent, his companion and business partner for 50 years. A place of refuge and inspiration, the country was to become deeply symbolic for the pair in their work and personal lives.
Following his death in 2008, Saint Laurent’s ashes were scattered in the rose garden of the Villa Oasis adjoining Majorelle Gardens in Marrakech, which he owned and restored with Bergé. A memorial was also built in the garden, designed around a Roman pillar that was brought from Tangier and set on a pedestal with a plate bearing his name.
The site is also home to a Berber museum, located in the former workshop of painter Jacques Majorelle and housing

Harold Koda to Be Honored With Lifetime Achievement Award by Pratt

Harold Koda will be saluted with the Lifetime Achievement award at the Pratt Institute Fashion Show + Cocktail Benefit on May 5.
Koda, who has announced he will be exiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute as curator in charge in January, will be honored for his “outstanding fashion curatorship and scholarship, which have helped elevate fashion as an art form.” Koda’s latest work can be seen in the Costume Institute’s “Jacqueline de Ribes: The Art of Style.” His previous exhibitions include “Charles James: Beyond Fashion,” “Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations,” “Diana Vreeland: Immoderate Style” and “Madame Grès.”
Koda, who graduated from the University of Hawaii with a B.A. and a B.F.A. in art history also studied at the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University and earned his M.A. in landscape architecture from the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University.
Koda, whose early days at the Met were under Diana Vreeland and Richard Martin, has said he prefers the behind-the-scenes elements of curating or, as he put it, “sort of the unglamorous part.” This summer he told WWD the 2008 deal with the Brooklyn Museum to share its American and European collection was an absolute boon.

Prabal Gurung Honored by Dallas FGI

Prabal Gurung overcame his admitted fear of public speaking last weekend to accept an award for career achievement from the Dallas chapter of Fashion Group International.
“When I was told about this award, I was really taken aback, grateful and also excited to come to Dallas,” Gurung told the “Night of Stars” gathering at Fashion Industry Gallery. “I was born in Nepal, grew up in Nepal, lived in India, lived in London and then I came to America. I traveled everywhere, but the kind of generosity and warmth you guys have shown me — I am really grateful and will never forget this, so thank you very much.”
Gurung noted that his designs are inspired by strong women, and the foundation he started to educate girls in Nepal is intended to help empower them.
“This award is an affirmation not only to me but to my team and everyone else back in Nepal that the path that I chose, the decision that I made to leave my family back in Nepal to come here and live the dream, was the right one,” he said.
The fund-raiser for FGI Dallas’ scholarship fund also honored Morgan Fairchild for lifetime achievement, NorthPark Center co-owner Nancy Nasher for career

Carolina Herrera to be Honored by National Portrait Gallery

PORTRAIT OF A LADY: Carolina Herrera now has reason beyond her new CH Carolina Herrera boutique to return to Washington, D.C. — she has been named one of the 2015 Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery honorees.
Herrera will be celebrated at the inaugural American Portrait gala on Nov. 15 along with fellow winners Aretha Franklin, Maya Lin, Henry “Hank” Aaron and U.S. Marine and Medal of Honor recipient Cpl. Kyle Carpenter. The event singles out individuals whose portraits are in the museum’s collection and each will receive The Portrait of a Nation Prize for their achievements in the arts, business, entertainment, military service or sports and their commitments to service. Herrera’s likeness was captured by the late photographer Robert Mapplethorpe.
The Venezuelan-born designer became a U.S. citizen in 2009.
The museum’s director Kim Sajet said, “Telling the history of this nation through the people who made it is core to our mission, and these honorees are today’s history makers. We are continually working to build the Portrait Gallery’s collection to reflect American achievement by highlighting those who make a difference, and these five people are exemplars in their fields.”
This fall’s gathering in the courtyard of the National Historic Landmark Building aims to raise $ 1

Calle 13 Honored By NYC As Band Demands Political Prisoner’s Release

NEW YORK — New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito (D-East Harlem) honored one of the most popular anti-imperialist bands in the U.S. on Friday as the group’s frontman donned a T-shirt demanding freedom for a jailed Puerto Rican nationalist viewed by many of the island’s residents as a political prisoner.

At Gracie Mansion ahead of Sunday’s Puerto Rican Day Parade, the elected officials bestowed René Pérez and Eduardo José Martínez of Latin hip-hop group Calle 13 with a proclamation praising the group for “igniting minds, imaginations, and conversations around the world.” It would have seemed an odd sight just a few months ago, during the city’s more conservative Bloomberg administration.

Pérez was crowned the king of this year’s Puerto Rican Day Parade, which chose the liberation of Oscar López Rivera as one of its main themes.

“They say that this is the country of freedom and human rights,” Pérez told The Huffington Post. “But if this were happening in another country, like Venezuela or China, people would say, ‘That’s a dictatorship.’”

Noting that President Barack Obama had visited the Robben Island jail cell where former South Africa President Nelson Mandela spent most of his 28-year confinement as a political prisoner, Pérez added: “You’ve got a political prisoner in your own country.”

López belonged to the Armed Forces of National Liberation, known by its Spanish initials as the FALN, which committed bombings, killings and kidnappings during the 1970s and 1980s in its efforts for Puerto Rican independence. He was convicted in 1980 of seditious conspiracy and sentenced to 55 years in prison, with 15 years added later after he was found guilty of attempting to escape. He has spent 12 of his 33 years in jail so far in solitary confinement, according to Puerto Rican news agency Primera Hora.

Those calling for his release say that at 71 years of age in an era in which the violent struggle for Puerto Rican independence has fizzled out, López no longer poses a threat. The Chicago-area bombings in which López was connected killed no one, and were intended to damage property rather than hurt people, according to Puerto Rican Resident Commissioner Pedro Pierluisi, who represents the island as a non-voting member of the U.S. Congress.

The issue has widespread support on the island. Both Pierluisi and Gov. Alejandro García Padilla, who belong to opposing political parties, have called on the Obama administration to free López. U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.), himself of Puerto Rican descent, has also pressed for López’s release.

Wildly popular throughout Latin America as well as among Hispanics in the United States, Calle 13 has become known for its revolutionary politics as much as its eclectic rhythms and risqué lyrics. The band rages against the U.S. killing of Puerto Rican nationalist Filiberto Ojeda Ríos in “Querido FBI,” extends its solidarity to immigrants in “Pa’l Norte,” and offers an anthem to Latin American unity in “Latinoamérica.” Calle 13’s most recent album, “Multiviral,” features a guest appearance by WikiLeaks founder and U.S. government nemesis Julian Assange.

Though de Blasio refrained from discussing Calle 13’s politics in his public remarks, the band’s anti-imperialist message likely strikes a personal chord with the mayor. As a young man, de Blasio supported the Central American solidarity movement, traveling to Nicaragua in 1988 during the left wing Sandinista government to distribute humanitarian aid.

De Blasio’s support of the Sandinistas ran counter to that of the U.S. government at the time, which funded a right wing rebel army in Nicaragua known as the Contras during the Ronald Reagan presidency. A 1989 Human Rights Watch report describes the Contras as “major and systematic violators of the most basic standards of the laws of armed conflict, including by launching indiscriminate attacks on civilians, selectively murdering non-combatants, and mistreating prisoners.”

A corruption scandal had threatened to cast a shadow on this year’s Puerto Rican Day Parade. An investigation by state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman revealed in February that the nonprofit that organizes the annual event had mismanaged $ 1.4 in corporate donations, according to the New York Daily News.

But Councilwoman Mark-Viverito, the first Latina to serve as city council’s speaker, praised the reorganized board as she spoke to the crowd at Gracie Mansion on Friday.

“Their efforts and the efforts of a community that is demanding accountability are bringing this parade back to its roots,” Mark-Viverito said.

She applauded the parade’s new leadership for championing the cause of Oscar López, saying that previous parade organizers had “never wanted to highlight” demands for his release.

Mark-Viverito said she chose to honor Calle 13 this year to send a message that those in positions of influence should use their fame to press for social change.

“We have added responsibility to raise our voice,” Mark-Viverito said. “And that is what Calle 13 does.”

In addition to López, this year’s parade will pay tribute to the 100th anniversary of the birth of poet Julia de Burgos, as well as the 65th Infantry Regiment, known as the Borinqueneers. Taking its name from the indigenous name of the island, “Borinquen,” the segregated Puerto Rican 65th Infantry Regiment fought in World Wars I and II and the Korean War, before being disbanded in 1959.
