Selfridges Notches More Than 4 Million Pounds in Early Hours of Boxing Day Sale

LONDON — Footfall may have been down on Boxing Day, which marks the start of the winter sales in Britain, but for Selfridges, the pickings were rich.
The store, known for its bright yellow branding, said following a strong pre-Christmas trading period, it took in more than 4 million pounds in the first hours of the Boxing Day sale, which began Tuesday night online and Wednesday morning in-store.
Selfridges said it has already seen a 6 percent uplift on last year, and added that Boxing Day 2018 is on track to remain the retailer’s biggest trading day of the year. Selfridges doesn’t close until 9 p.m. local time, so final numbers are still unavailable.
The company said shoppers began arriving outside the Oxford Street store at 2:30 a.m. on Boxing Day, the day after Christmas, when estate owners and employers in Britain traditionally gave gifts to their employees. The store said it expected to see around 120,000 customers between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. on Wednesday.
Selfridges.com has seen the highest number of site visits to date, with 1.5 million customers visiting the site since Tuesday night, with “high double-digit growth” online compared with last year, it said.

We Played 2 Hours of Red Dead Redemption 2 – Here’s What Happened

As I trotted across the prairieland of New Hanover on my well-groomed steed, Mahogany Boy (named due to a tragic misread of his breed, the Mahogany Bay), I heard the dull rattle of a freight train. I yanked the reins, hit X a few times to shift gears into a gallop, and streaked toward the tracks, just as the steam locomotive rounded a corner into view. I had an idea.

As I took up a trajectory with the train, I heard a shout over the growing noise – bounty hunters sent to collect me, dead not alive. It was a fair cop: I’d recently threatened a passing wagoner, stolen his cart and rode it off a cliff to see what happens (you die). As the engine streaked past and I swung the camera to get a look at my pursuers, a button prompt appeared in the bottom-right corner of the screen: “Jump on train”.

Rihanna Runs on Less Than Four Hours of Sleep a Night

STAYING AWAKE: What does it take to become Rihanna? Less than four hours’ sleep per night, apparently.
The “Wild Thoughts” singer shares insights into her personal life and inspirations as guest editor of the December issue of Vogue Paris, scheduled to go on sale on Dec. 1. The issue comes with three separate covers shot by Inez Van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, Jean-Paul Goude and Juergen Teller.
A section titled “A Girl Like Me” opens with a candid shot of Rihanna divebombing into a pool in the Dominican Republic. In the accompanying caption, she reveals that she usually likes to spend her days off on tour sightseeing rather than sunbathing.
“I have a lot of trouble switching off. Even when I get home early, which means before 1 a.m., I start binge-watching shows or documentaries, which I love. I can’t go straight to bed. As a matter of fact, I only sleep three or four hours a night,” she is quoted as saying in the French text.

Someone Broke Into Amber Rose’s Home And Straight-Up Chilled For Hours

Amber Rose is the latest celebrity to fall victim to a home invasion.

When the homes of the rich and famous are vandalized, the intruders typically grab the goods and go. But the man who broke into Rose’s Los Angeles home early Wednesday morning stayed put for hours while she slept soundly in a nearby room, according to TMZ, which was first to report the break-in.

He reportedly gained entry between the hours of 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. through her pantry by breaking a kitchen window. Rose, along with her mother, son, assistant, and bodyguards were all in the residence at the time, but somehow no one noticed that the man remained in the home for four hours. Her assistant reportedly even got up to make food while the intruder was in the house and didn’t suspect anything.

It wasn’t until Rose noticed shattered glass in the kitchen area later that morning and checked her home surveillance footage that she discovered video evidence of a man breaking in and then leaving hours later. She then phoned the police who are now investigating the crime.

Nobody was harmed in the home invasion and the suspect reportedly didn’t even make off with any of Rose’s possessions.

Rose’s home invasion is part of a string of attacks on homes of celebrities including Emmy Rossum, Kendall Jenner and Jaime Pressly in recent months. Earlier that same day, armed robbers reportedly broke into rapper A$ AP Rocky’s Beverly Grove home, a mere 12 miles away from Rose’s residence, and made off with $ 1 million in cash and jewelry.

Those Good Vibes You Feel After Sex Can Last For 48 Hours, Study Finds

Research has proven that people are generally in a better mood after having sex ― you can thank a flood of endorphins and other feel-good hormones for that. But how long do those post-sex feelings last?

A new study suggests that the positive effects of getting laid last up to two days ― and those good vibes also help couples bond over time.

Lead researcher Andrea Meltzer and her team at Florida State University examined data from two independent longitudinal studies, one with 96 newlywed couples and another with 118 newlywed couples. All the couples had completed at least three consecutive days of a 14-day sex diary.

Each night before falling asleep, the partners were asked to report whether they had sex that day. They were also asked to jot down how satisfied they were with three things: their sex life, their partner and their relationship as a whole.

On average, the participants had sex four days out of the 14. Unsurprisingly, sex on any given day was linked with feelings of sexual and relationship satisfaction ― but what’s interesting is that the afterglow effect lasted up to 48 hours later. And those who sustained the afterglow for that amount of time also were happy with their relationships months down the road.

“People with a stronger sexual afterglow ― that is, people who report a higher level of sexual satisfaction 48 hours after sex ― report higher levels of relationship satisfaction several months later.”
Andrea Meltzer

“People with a stronger sexual afterglow ― that is, people who report a higher level of sexual satisfaction 48 hours after sex ― report higher levels of relationship satisfaction several months later,” Meltzer said of the study, which was published this month in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

In an interview with The Huffington Post, Meltzer said what most surprised her most about the findings was how well the mental benefits of sex synced up with human biology.

“Forty-eight hours is roughly the same amount of time that (a) conception is maximized, (b) it takes sperm concentrations to be restored to peak levels, and (c) sperm remain maximally viable in the female reproductive tract,” she said. “It’s really interesting that lingering cognitive implications of sex ― sexual afterglow, for instance ― last for the same amount of time as the biological implications of sex.”

Meltzer said that newlyweds were singled out for the study because they engage in sex more frequently than long-term couples ― a requisite for the research.

“Our theory was based on reproduction,” Meltzer told HuffPost. “Given that newlyweds are often young and of reproductive age, they were an ideal sample in which to test our predictions.”

In sum? Sex plays a major role in satisfaction and pair bonding, even if you’re not having sex every day of the week.

Couple Married 63 Years Dies Hours Apart: ‘I Know They Are Together’

After 63 years of marriage, Dolores and Trent Winstead of Nashville, Tennessee just couldn’t bear to be apart.

On Dec. 9 at around 9 p.m., Dolores, 83, died after suffering a brain aneurysm; the following afternoon at 4 p.m., Trent, 88, died after his heart had weakened from kidney failure.

“I know they are together and happy for eternity, and that is a comfort to me,” the couple’s daughter Sheryl Winstead told Today. “But I never in a million years dreamed I would walk out of the hospital without either one of them.”

The pair would have celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary in January.

When Trent was hospitalized at St. Thomas West earlier this month for kidney failure, Dolores was seemingly in good health. One day at the hospital, she appeared to have fallen asleep in a chair at Trent’s bedside after complaining of a bad headache. It wasn’t until Sheryl tried to wake her up and couldn’t that the family realized something was wrong. Nurses tried to revive Dolores but her brain activity was gone after the aneurysm, according to the Washington Post. They hooked her up to a ventilator and eventually moved her and Trent into the same room.

For their final hours together, the couple held hands as they laid in beds side by side.

The couple has two kids, three grandkids and eight great-grandkids. Their son Eddie was the one who told Trent that Dolores had died.

“I had to lean down next to him, and just kind of tell him, ‘Mom has passed,’” Eddie told ABC affiliate WKRN. “When that happened, it was kind of like his whole spirit just changed.”

He continued, “I told him, I said, ‘Dad, if you want to go be with Mom, that’s quite alright with Sheryl and I.’”

Losing both Trent and Dolores in such a short span of time was undoubtedly difficult for the family, but knowing the couple didn’t have to live long without one another brought them some comfort.

“It’s like God made their travel arrangements and they went together,” Sheryl told WKRN. “It’s just really sweet.”

Watch the video above for more on their story.

SHOPPING DEALS UPDATE:

I Got My 8 Hours in — Did You?

5 isn’t enough. 7 could work but less optimal for me. You can’t make it up. There is nothing else like it. I need 8. That is — I need 8 hours of sleep. Yes — SLEEP. Don’t know about you — but waking up after 8 hours sets me up perfectly for the day ahead. I can bring my best self to the entire day. I also get the most out of those days too.

“I only need 4 hours of sleep!”

Trust me, it’s not a badge of honor to brag that you can get by on 4 hours or 5 each night. I’ve heard that statement too many times. (Especially in Silicon Valley) You intimate that with fewer hours “wasted on sleep” you are more productive. Nope. Can’t buy that. When you brag about that, you are telling me that it’s ok for you to harm your health and not perform your best at work or at home. Is that something to brag about?? Would you encourage your children to sleep only 5 hours a night? I wouldn’t. Ever try to teach a cranky sleepy child? Now that is a challenge and typically doesn’t bear fruit. No surprise.

Studies show that 7 to 8 hours of sleep are optimal. You could function at 6 hours but not at your peak. Also — you can’t make up the deficit. It’s a myth that you can “catch up on your sleep” over the weekend. Your brain and your body need more.

Less sleep — less of you:

I know I needed more. As a mother of 3 kids all within 3 and half years — sleep was a coveted commodity. I also work full time. Taking a nap was not in my schedule. (Although I would have loved one!) There were days, weeks and months where I didn’t achieve that 8-hour goal. It showed. I know it impacted my career at times. When you are not resilient, have lower energy and lack of focus — how can your leadership team see the full potential in you?

What I found to be true for me is that without a good night’s rest, I was more emotional, less resilient, less focused, had loss of memory and was more impatient. Just grumpy. That made my day super long and I was someone who wasn’t as pleasant to be around. As a leader — that’s not a good thing. It didn’t only impact me — it impacted my team, my ability to influence and my role as a parent.

My “brain dead” day:

My personal “ah ha” moment was an embarrassing moment. No surprise there. 2 kids in diapers… ages 2 and 8 months… I was rushing to get ready for work and drop off the kids at day care. I had a meeting at 8 AM — what possessed me to accept that invite? I was up at least 3 times during the night for kid duty… I showered, changed, fed and packed the kids, off to day-care, and went off to work — beginning the day. That day I had back-to-back meetings, felt like I was always “behind” — either in thought or time. I had to catch up. I thought I was missing something. Something wasn’t right but I couldn’t wrap my head around it — I was too busy trying to stay on top of my business issues. I was not really listening or pausing to think.

Yup — it wasn’t my day. Around 3 o’clock a co-worker pointed out the baby spit on the back of my suit jacket I had been wearing all day… Yuck! (Such a great impression that must have made.) I also realized that I left the diaper bag and extra snacks in the car! And — in all honesty — wasn’t on my A game in that 3 PM meeting or in the earlier ones. I felt disjointed and it showed when I tried to influence the dialogue in the meetings. My thoughts didn’t flow and I gave up trying to better express my thoughts. I had less impact. My next thought? There’s a new day tomorrow… I can always catch up on my sleep… But I didn’t.

That was a typical day for a number of years. I still struggle when I travel overseas — the time zone changes can wreck havoc on your sleep patterns. I struggle when work goes into “sprint mode” and I have too much on my plate. It can be hard to manage.

The impact? I was impaired, like a drunk. In studies they say that less than 6 hours of sleep affects your driving and reaction time. I believe it. My decision-making slowed down and my ability to grasp complex issues was strained. It’s frustrating and it can be avoided. That’s the key — you can avoid that situation.

Don’t survive — Thrive:

Now — In all honestly I knew all of this but when I heard Arianna Huffington speak about her book Thrive and the need for sleep, several pieces clicked into place for me. I could and should take control of this pattern once and for all. I wasn’t alone.

I made it a goal to sleep better — for my family, my work and me.

Learning about how to get better sleep, encourage my kids to sleep better at night and be fresh for the day was a game changer. It had a true ROI. The catch? I needed to change certain patterns in my life. That can be hard.

Here is what I learned from Arianna and others:

1. Make sleep a priority — it is part of your health/ well-being regime.
2. Prepare for sleep appropriately — get a routine that relaxes you one hour before bed. Do not read your computer, IPhone or I pad. Read a normal book or listen to music. Don’t work.
3. Give yourself a chance to sleep through the night — don’t drink liquids 1-2 hours before bed, put your phone away / shut it off, and follow your routine. Keep your mind less cluttered. If you do get up, don’t check your devices. It will just trigger your brain and getting back to sleep will be difficult.

So that is what I did. Or more truthfully — what I am pursuing. It’s got to work for you. Everyone is different. So I am working on me. And I am better because of it!

Today — I am still figuring out my “routine” as I travel quite a bit so what I do needs to be adaptable to home and hotels. Getting ready for bed, reading a soft cover book is part of my routine. I also finally — put away my phone. (Thank you Arianna for your advice!) If something is urgent — get a flip phone that only a few select individuals can use. Other than that — disconnect. It feels so freeing that I am dis-entangling my device from me for dinners, time with family and friends. My texting/ social posting/ checking the random emails can wait. I want to be “present” for those that matter. (My husband has noticed the difference!)

On my ability to sleep through the night — I’m learning how to clear my mind, meditate and be more mindful. I slow down an hour before I go to bed. When I practice these behaviors — I sleep wonderfully. It takes me about 15 minutes to fall asleep but that is the norm. If you are falling asleep right when you head hits the pillow — you are not getting enough sleep.

And yes — I got my 8 hours in last night and I feel great! I have energy, I laughed more today, and I was really “present” to those around me. Most importantly I enjoyed my day. It showed in my smiles and my walk. It is a gift to me and those around me.

So I got my 8 hours in — did you?

24 Hours — It’s Not As Long As You Think

2015-08-24-1440446548-9241394-Time.jpg
Image: Amanda Yuill

A few times a year, something magical happens in my world. I find myself in possession of something akin to the Holy Grail — 24 hours without any plans. When I realize that one of these days is on the horizon, it captures my full attention, and I go to extreme lengths to protect it. And then I start to fantasize about all of the wonderful things I’m going to do with this precious, empty day. The adventures I’m going to have, the radical self-care I’m going to partake in, the trombone practice, the photography expedition, and as sad as it is, I’ve even fantasized about using some of these days to finally catch up on work. My expectations start to soar, and more often than not I find myself starting to stress about how I’m going to fit it all in.

I’ve been doing a lot of mindfulness work lately, in particular trying to play the role of “curious observer” to my thoughts and behaviors. It was through this curious observation that I came to a shocking realization this week.

Things take time.

Quite a lot of time, actually. And no matter how much we try to multitask (which is not only counterproductive but may even be damaging to our brains), or use the latest “productivity hack” to expand it, time isn’t going to change to meet the demands of our busy schedule.

It’s no secret that those demands have grown, seemingly exponentially, during our lifetimes. While a lot of progress has been made on the convenience and efficiency fronts, the expectations about what we do with all that saved time have escalated out of control. Some of those expectations we place on each other (we’ve all got our “thing”, and we all want our friends and family to come watch/play/do it with us), but most of them come from within. We expect from ourselves nothing less than the perfect body, perfect relationship, perfect career, perfect home… and the list goes on. But guess what?

Mastery takes time.

10,000 hours of deliberate practice to be exact, according to Malcolm Gladwell in the bestselling book Outliers. And even that won’t get you there if you’re not starting with some key talent or genetic qualities. But let’s consider that for a moment — 10,000 hours. If you were to spend two hours per day of deliberate practice on just one of those things (which is pretty ambitious for most of us), every single day, it would take about 13 years and 8 months to achieve mastery (which is as close to perfection as any of us can hope for).

Knowing this rule of thumb arms us with information to help reshape the expectations we place on ourselves. Namely:

  1. Pick a thing to be the thing you’re really, really good at. Maybe two. But no more than that, because if you do, you’re setting yourself up for failure.
  2. For those one or two things, calculate where you’re at on your journey to mastery using the 10,000 hour rule, and reset your expectations for achieving mastery based on the amount of time you are willing to commit in the future.
  3. For all of the other things you used to aspire to perfection in, create a new expectation that is more realistic based on the amount of time you are willing to commit to it.
  4. Next time you notice yourself stressing about being too busy, look at your schedule objectively and be honest with yourself about where you’re placing expectations on yourself that you could ease up on. If you think everything is being imposed on you by others, think again. We often tell ourselves this to avoid taking responsibility for our own experience.

Incidentally, today was one of those days for me — magically uncluttered by commitments. What did I do? A yoga class, a hike with my dog followed by giving her a bath, some laundry, took a nap, ate delicious, simple, healthy food, and wrote this post. Maybe half of what I had wanted to do. But I’ve been reminding myself all day that time is what it is, and I did the things that were most important to me first. It’s not easy, but I’m starting to accept that time is a more powerful force than I will ever be, and I can spend my life fighting it or get more realistic and work with it.

How would you describe your relationship with time? And how could you improve it? I’d love to hear from you in the comments below.

Not illustrated. 1915 edition. Excerpt: … TREASURE CHAPTER I THE WISE MAN AND THE FOOt THERE is no justification for the idea that cousins ought to have similar tastes and aspirations any more than that they ought to be alike in form and feature. And yet when people were told that George Harvey and Thomas Ewins were cousins they would generally say: "What! Those two cousins! Well! Who would have thought it!" Certainly the cousins had a few things in common: they had no other near relatives and they lived together, sharing the same joint, the same dish of vegetables, the same pudding, the same loaf, the same domestic et ceteras, provided by Mrs. Bowers. They did not, however, share the same philosophy. They did not often discuss it–as philosophy. But every now and then they raised voices in scorn, each finely overflowing with contempt for the other. They had both had to make their way in life as they had been left fatherless at a tender age, and had sown and reaped for themselves almost from the early teens. Harvey was a printer and for some few years past had managed the business formerly belonging to Edward Gollam, but now the sole property of his sorrowful and not well-to-do widow. When Mr. Gollam died and left his widow with four girls and a printing business, Ewins told his cousin to ask for a partnership, or start printing on his own account. But Mrs. Gollam wondered so pathetically how she "could manage with four girls; if one had been a boy it would have been different, particularly if he had been old enough to step in his father's shoes, but girls . . . and how could she manage a business that she knew nothing of?" And when a woman (or man for that matter) looked pathetically helpless George Harvey was always touched. It was quite true that George Harvey might have made…

Kristen Stewart’s ‘Camp X-Ray’ And Three Other Movies From The First 24 Hours Of Sundance

The first 24 hours of the Sundance Film Festival are now complete. The weather in Park City, Utah has been surprisingly pleasant (which I am sure will change drastically because of the sentence I just wrote). Regardless, as in years past, I’ll be providing a daily synopsis of all of the movies that I’ve seen at the festival.

This first installment includes the current talk of the festival so far, “Whiplash,” the surprise hit starring Miles Teller; Kristen Stewart’s Guantanamo Bay drama, “Camp X-Ray”; and Aaron Paul’s first film post-“Breaking Bad,” “Hellion.”

“Whiplash”

whiplash

Sundance isn’t exactly known for showing, let’s say, their better films on the first night of the festival. I think this may be the reason that not many people saw “Whiplash” coming. Plus, the synopsis about a college student, Andrew (Miles Teller), trying out for his school’s jazz band doesn’t sound, on the surface, like something oozing with excitement. Boy, were those assumptions wrong. The key here is that his music professor, Terence Fletcher (J.K. Simmons), isn’t the “tough love, but has a heart of gold” type of guy. For lack of a better term, he’s an asshole. He casually drops homophobic slurs while berating his students and he’s not afraid of physical abuse. As an audience, we hate this guy. But, we don’t doubt Fetcher’s talent and Fletcher doesn’t doubt Andrew’s talent — even though these two despise each other. Which, for the viewer, creates an electric relationship to observe. (And one of the best drum solos I’ve ever seen on screen.)

“Camp X-Ray”

camp xray

Even though it doesn’t completely work, this was a good career choice for Kristen Stewart. And she’s fine as Amy Cole, a private stationed at Guantanamo Bay whose duty it is to keep the detainees – never “prisoners” – alive. There’s certainly an interesting message in this film concerning the ethics of Guantanamo Bay, but, as a movie, there’s a lot of mundane scenes of soldiers peering into cell windows. It’s a movie about people in a remote prison who we know aren’t going anywhere anytime soon, which limits where the story can really go. (Though, it does flirt with a borderline sexual assault at an off-duty party. This does not make the movie any better.) There’s a level of appreciation here that Stewart tried something completely different, but the movie itself doesn’t have any room to breathe.

“Hellion”

hellion

Boy, it’s nice to watch Aaron Paul play someone who is not Jesse Pinkman. And it’s kind of obvious on-screen that Paul is himself relishing this opportunity. (Note: I spoke to Paul after the premiere for an interview that will also publish this weekend.) Paul plays Hollis, a widower alcoholic trying to raise his two young sons, the older of which, Jacob (Josh Wiggins) is a hellion and seems to find himself in trouble with the law on a regular basis. The film takes a really odd narrative choice in the final act, but that doesn’t overshadow the great performances by both Paul and newcomer Josh Wiggins.

“A Most Wanted Man”

a most wanted man

From director Anton Corbijn — the man who brought you “The American” (a movie that most people don’t like very much) – comes another slow burn, “A Most Wanted Man.” Set in Hamburg, Germany — a hotbed of sorts for terrorist activities — we follow German spy Gunther Bachman (Philip Seymour Hoffman), as he attempts to locate a suspected terrorist, while trying to prevent his own government and the American government from overeacting. Look, the story here is interesting, but execution is dull. I actually enjoyed the slow-paced “The American,” because the tone was slow. It felt like the movie was supposed to take its time. Here, there’s so much going on and so many interesting characters, I was on the edge of my seat for the first half of the movie waiting for something to happen – because it feels like something should happen. Then I just eventually gave up. Yet, I still found the movie strangely compelling. Look, no one ever said that the spy game was exciting.
