Prince Harry and Meghan Are Upholding a ‘Very Important’ Tradition Involving the Wedding Dress!

They may be getting married in front of the entire world, but Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are just like brides and grooms everywhere when it comes to certain traditions.

The future newlyweds are avoiding the bad luck superstition of the groom seeing the bride in her dress before the ceremony. In a press briefing on Friday, the palace confirmed that the first time Harry will see Meghan in her wedding gown will be when she walks down the aisle.

“That tradition is very important to them,” a palace spokesman said.

Harry and Meghan will also be spending the night before their wedding apart. And they will stay at Windsor Castle on the night of their wedding.

VICTORIA JONES/AFP/Getty

While details of her dress are being kept under wraps, the couple has revealed that Meghan’s father, Thomas Markle, will be walking her down the aisle at St. George’s Chapel on May 19.

Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, will travel with her daughter by car to Windsor Castle the morning of the wedding.

“Ms. Markle is delighted to have her parents by her side on this important and happy occasion,” the palace announced.

There are several royal family traditions Meghan will also consider for her wedding. Every royal bride since 1858 has carried a sprig of myrtle — the “herb of love” — in her wedding bouquet. The royal family has also been using pure Welsh gold for their wedding rings ever since the Queen Mother’s wedding in 1923.

And while most brides honor the tradition of throwing the bouquet, Meghan’s floral posy (by Phillippa Craddock) will very likely end up in Westminster Abbey, rather than in the hands of one of her bridesmaids. Most royal brides (including Kate Middleton and Princess Diana) have sent their floral bouquets back to the Abbey to rest on the Grave of the Unknown Soldier, a place of remembrance for fallen soldiers since 1920.

Bill Maher Has A Very Important Message For People Interviewing Donald Trump

Bill Maher has issued a stark warning to fellow TV hosts who interview President-elect Donald Trump in the upcoming months.

If you are going to have him on, he’s a politician,” Maher said on Wednesday’s broadcast of “Jimmy Kimmel Live.”

“I know he’s actually a game show host from Queens, but now he’s the president of the United States, so if you’re going to have him on ― this is everybody ― hold his feet to the fire,” he added. “Don’t let him use you.”

“Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon was accused of letting Trump do just that in September, when he messed up the GOP nominee’s hair during an interview.

Maher was a vocal critic of Trump throughout the presidential election campaign. But the comedian said he would still welcome the former reality television personality onto his show, “Real Time with Bill Maher.”

Although it took Maher eight years to secure an interview with President Barack Obama, he admitted Trump’s “unpredictable” nature could mean the soon-to-be president turns up for his show’s new season, which returns to HBO this Friday.

“What kind of guy is he? That’s the point.” said Maher. “It took me eight years to get Obama; [Trump] could appear on my second show. You don’t know what this guy is doing, which is why I’m sweating like a whore in church.”

Watch the full interview above, and check out the footage below of Maher revealing his No. 1 global concern.

Lunch With Stephen: The Most Important Meal Of The Day

They say there’s no such thing as a free lunch. That old adage is beginning to make sense as we head into the home stretch of Stephen Colbert’s daily, weeklong “Lunch with Stephen” series. Think “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee,” but more like “Comedian in Plaid Incriminating Lunchmates of Class A Felonies.”

The official “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” website is releasing one video each day this week in which CBS’s new late-night host shows up at your job for a brown-bag rendezvous. It’s very important to begin with Monday’s lunch (above) because, unlike a late-night talk show, these episodes don’t stand alone. Or … sit at the table alone.

Also, see Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s lunch below:

If “Lunch with Stephen” doesn’t quench your appetite for Colbert, listen to him sit down with his new band leader Jon Batiste and co-executive producer/writer Barry Julien.

Sleep the Single Most Important Determinant in Predicting Longevity

2015-06-25-1435224529-7585081-sleeping_woman.jpg

The most basic change we can make in redefining Third Metric success in our lives has to do with our relationship to sleep and the sleep environment.

Healthy Sleep has been empirically proven to be the single most important determinant in predicting longevity, more important than diet, exercise, or heredity.

William C. Dement, founder of the Sleep Research Center at Stanford University, the world’s first sleep laboratory, and part of the team which first identified the different stages of sleep.

Sleep an Important Aspect of our Health

Supporting a Better Sleep

At least a third of us don’t sleep well. Most people wake up tired and the tiredness lasts throughout the day. However, sleep is an essential physiological function; a key research concept is that of Till Roenneberg social jetlag — the difference between when our internal body clock wants us to get up in the morning versus when we are forced out of bed by our alarm clock.

Sleep underpins all aspects of our health; it is when our bodies are designed to recover from the stresses of the day before, and to prepare for the stresses of the day ahead. Poor sleep can lead to an increase in the chronic stress response and thus a reduction in the immune function and further consequences to almost every aspect of our health and wellbeing.

Rested sleep is not just about how many hours we sleep, but also about quality of sleep, and a significant part of the quality is about the sleep environment.

Sleep Environment

Modern advances in sleep research using infrared and magnetic technology have made possible the creation of the optimal sleep environment. The elements of the Kenko Naturest Sleep System are designed to work in harmony together to cocoon you in an advanced, adaptive, sleeping environment, to create the best chance of the highest quality of sleep, the feeling of sleeping in nature in our own homes, and to help achieve the level of sleep for your mind and body to function not just adequately, but with energy and vitality.

When choosing a bed, most people only really give thought to the apparent comfort of the mattress. However, in order to offer the highest quality sleep – and adequate rest and recovery – there are many considerations that need to be resolved in the sleep environment. These include: physical comfort, supportive thermal environment with moisture control, ventilation stimulation, hygiene and energetic environment all designed to support the highest quality sleep.

The Kenko Sleep System> optimizes each of these different factors for each individual, even if they share a bed with a partner who might have significantly different requirements at any one time.

Additional Sleep Tips From the Experts Consulted in Thrive

• Make your bedroom darker and keep it cool.
• Practice deep breathing before bed.
• Take a warm bath before bed.
• Exercise or at least walk every day.
• Banish all LCD screens (laptops, tablets, smartphones, TV) at night.
• Cut down on coffee after 2 pm and avoid alcohol right before bedtime to give the body time to metabolize it.

Creating Our Personal Sleep Revolution

Creating a healthier, happier life doesn’t need to be complicated. By simply incorporating the Kenko Naturest Sleep System into our bed and adding the sleep tips suggested we will begin to create a revolution in our culture, our thinking, our workplaces, and our lives.

The 8 Most Important Things We’ve Learned About Happiness In The Past 10 Years

We’re living in a golden age of happiness — the scientific study of happiness, at least.

The field of positive psychology has exploded in growth since its inception in 1998, dramatically increasing our understanding of human flourishing. We now know more than ever about what makes us happy, how we can spread happiness socially and geographically, and how happiness affects our physical and mental health.

But it’s just the beginning. In the next decade, we’re likely to see not only a greater understanding of positive emotions, but also the application of this research on a practical level to improve well-being on a global scale.

“Positive psychology has just scratched at the surface of the benefits of topics like meditation, gratitude and forgiveness,” Emma Seppala, Ph.D., a positive psychologist at Stanford and associate director of Stanford University’s Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education, told The Huffington Post in an email. “The next decade of research will dive deep into these topics.”

Already, this burgeoning research offers valuable tools for each one of us to bring more joy into our own lives and the lives of others. In honor of HuffPost’s 10th anniversary, here are eight scientific findings about happiness from the past decade — and reasons why we’ll be happier in the future, too.

happiness

1. We get happier as we get older.
Although we tend to focus on the downsides of aging, a robust body of research suggests we’ve got a lot to look forward to as we get older. One survey conducted in 2013 found 23 and 69 to be life’s two happiest ages. Other data suggests that after happiness levels drop around mid-life, they tend to increase steadily into old age. One conducted by Duke University researchers in 2006 found that 70-year-olds tended to rate themselves as being happier than 30-year-olds did.

Why? Greater appreciations for life’s little triumphs and acceptance of life’s trials likely play a role, as well as lower stress levels.

“As we age, we have the opportunity to accept who we are, instead of focusing on who we feel we need to become,” psychoanalyst Ken Eisold wrote in Psychology Today. “We relax into being ourselves.”

“As we age… we relax into being ourselves.”

2. You can rewire your brain for happiness.
One of the most amazing things about the human brain is neuroplasticity — the brain’s capacity to rewire itself in response to new experiences.

We can actually wire our brains for happiness by focusing our attention on positive experiences and emotions, says neuropsychologist Rick Hanson, author of Hardwiring Happiness: The New Brain Science of Contentment, Calm, and Confidence. When you linger on a positive experience, it becomes encoded in your neural chemistry. Linger on many of these experiences, and the connections become strengthened over time and easier to retrieve.

“The longer the neurons fire, the more of them that fire, and the more intensely they fire, the more they’re going to wire that inner strength –- that happiness, gratitude, feeling confident, feeling successful, feeling loved and lovable,” Hanson told HuffPost in 2013.

3. Happy mind, healthy body.
More and more science is revealing the depth of our mind-body connection. We know now that cultivating a positive state of mind isn’t just good for your mental health — it can also keep your body healthy and protect you from disease.

Positive emotions have been shown to boost immune system functioning, positively alter gene expression, improve sleep quality and reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke, among other physical health benefits.

4. Social connection is key.
Human beings are social creatures, and the quality of our relationships is inextricably linked with our physical and mental well-being.

“Over a given period, people who have strong ties to family, friends, or coworkers have a 50 percent greater chance of outliving those with fewer social connections,” CNN medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta wrote last year. “If our relationships can have such an effect on our overall health, why don’t we prioritize spending time with the people around us as much as we do exercising and eating right?”

5. We can thrive in the face of life’s challenges.
The field of post-traumatic growth — which investigates how people not only survive but come to thrive in the wake of adversity — is one of the most exciting in all of psychology right now, says Dr. Scott Barry Kaufman, a psychologist at the University of Pennsylvania.

“I believe we need to move beyond positive emotions and incorporate trauma and anxiety, and investigate how these ‘negative’ emotions can lead to greater personal growth and well-being,” Kaufman told The Huffington Post in an email.

6. We’re happier when we’re helping others.
Being kind to others is a fast track to happiness. Volunteering makes people happier and boosts their longevity, according to a 2013 review of studies from the University of Exeter.

Helping others may also be an effective way to combat feelings of disconnection in our increasingly online lives.

“Too much use of technology can actually isolate us and make us lonelier,” Kaufman told The Huffington Post. “Also, generations appear to be getting more and more narcissistic and self-focused, and we know that’s not conducive to well-being. I think we will only be happier in the future if we can figure out a way to harness new technologies for the benefit of helping others.”

An added benefit? Kindness is contagious.

7. Lasting happiness is born of purpose.
“Happiness cannot be pursued; it must ensue,” Austrian psychiatrist and Holocaust survivor Viktor Frankl wrote in his 1946 manifesto Man’s Search for Meaning. “One must have a reason to ‘be happy.'”

In recent years, psychologists have demonstrated what Frankl long held to be true: Happiness doesn’t just come from chasing pleasure or positive experiences. As mounting research has demonstrated, sustainable happiness (and good health) comes from having a deep sense of purpose in life.

“One must have a reason to ‘be happy.'”

Studies have shown that a sense of purpose and meaning increases well-being and life satisfaction, boosts self-esteem and can even ward off depression.

8. Mindfulness is a gateway to happiness.
You don’t have to be a veteran yogi or a meditating monk to make yourself at least “10 percent happier,” as ABC anchor Dan Harris says, through a mindfulness practice. Studies have shown that meditation boosts positive feelings and psychological well-being, in addition to warding off stress, depression and anxiety.

“Research suggests that we are happiest in the present,” Seppala told HuffPost. “We will be happier in the future, if we learn to be present!”

Important Areas of Compatibility

Many couples come into counseling saying that they have realized they are just not compatible.  One or both partners, but usually the woman, says that these areas of incompatibility are making the relationship hopeless.  However, from my experience, there are usually not too many dealbreaker areas of incompatibility in a marriage.  But there are some.  Here are the five areas of incompatibility that can weaken your relationship.  If you’re currently single or dating, this is an important post for you too, as you can be sure to assess your relationship in terms of compatibility in these domains before choosing to marry or have children with a partner.

1. Attitudes about gender roles

This is a very important one.  It can be very difficult to move forward if, for example, a man thinks that a woman’s “job” is to be a wife and mother, and that his role is to be a breadwinner, and his wife wants to work full time outside the home.  Often, women will say, “He just wants a woman like his mom, and I never thought that was the case when we were dating.”  Just as frequently, men say, “I thought she wanted to keep working, but it seems she expects me to support her while she stays home with the kids.  I didn’t have any idea she wanted that.” Often, couples do not explicitly discuss what each partner thinks about gender roles prior to marriage (particularly as they apply to division of labor when parenting), so each partner feels hoodwinked and disappointed.

Usually, each partner’s attitude about gender roles stems from early childhood experiences and observations of their own parents.  If compatibility or compromise is to be reached on these issues, it often requires insight-oriented therapy to examine assumptions about gender, including where they came from and how they are currently hurting or helping your relationship.

2. The importance of sex

Note that I don’t say “equal sex drives,” because, especially in long-term monogamy, and double especially after kids, men usually have much higher sex drives than their wives.  However, couples that really struggle have one partner who just doesn’t think that sex is a big deal, and one who thinks it’s essential for closeness.  In two marriages where the wife’s libido is next to nil, the one where this fact bothers the wife will be much happier than the one where the wife is not at all concerned.  Check these guys’ stories out for validation of this.

If you are the partner with the lower sex drive, the least helpful thing you can say is, “It’s just sex!  It’s not a big deal!”  And if you’re the partner with the higher sex drive, the least helpful thing to say is, “Without sex, we’re like roommates.”  Both of these statements invalidate the other person’s entire worldview.  Empathy and validation are key in coming to an understanding in this arena.

3. The importance of romance

Just like how women are more sexual at the beginning of a relationship, men are often more romantic.  This is all biology and makes sense evolutionarily; the man is wooing the woman and the woman is enticing the male, both with the biological imperative to breed with the other (and the woman’s imperative is to keep the male around for a couple of years afterwards, to help her raise a baby).   But when one partner, whom I will call “the man” because, let’s face it’s, it’s often the man, decides that romance is silly once you’re already married, this can come as a tremendous blow to the other partner, who still yearns for this type of connection.

As I discuss above, the issue isn’t so much with couples where the husband isn’t romantic “enough,” it’s when he condescends to the very idea of being romantic or complimentary, and thinks that it is silly for his wife to “need” this.  Often, these types of men were raised in families without a lot of emotional expression, so they are not necessarily “good” at romance.  Instead of trying, and possibly coming off foolish, they deny that romance is important or meaningful.  And instead of realizing that their husbands may just be trying to save face in an arena where they know they may fail, wives often believe that their husbands are just “cold” or incapable of intimacy.

If this describes your relationship, it is often very helpful to have a discussion about romance and the role, if any, that it played in your life growing up. Did you see any romance at home?  Did you yearn for it?  Was it mocked by one or both of your parents or your culture as a whole?  These types of conversations can be a great jumping off point for couples to be able to see one another’s perspective about this sensitive issue.

4. The role of extended family

When you have a husband who calls his mom for childrearing advice every day and a wife who prefers to be independent and does not ask her family for much, there can be a great deal of conflict.  This also extends to areas where one partner feels “obligated” to her family in various regards (whether it’s weekly dinners, daily phone calls, vacations together) and the other feels that decisions should be made primarily as they impact the nuclear family.  Sometimes, one person has not individuated much from their family of origin, and this can be frustrating for the other partner, who feels they have married a child and not an adult.

This type of conflict can become even worse when one partner’s family starts criticizing the other partner, either outright or passive-aggressively, and this person does not defend the partner.  In-law “drama” can sometimes be the death-knell of a relationship, particularly when it is extensive and one partner feels that the other does not understand the severity of the problem.

Both individuals who are enmeshed with their families of origin and those who want a great deal of distance likely have unresolved childhood issues.  These issues emerge at a subconscious level, and are likely informing their attitudes toward the current involvement of extended family in their lives.  Family issues can be very sensitive, hot-button topics, and can benefit from introspection and counseling targeted toward helping a person see the impact of their behavior on their relationship.

5. Finances

If one partner is anxious without a cushion of savings and the other is an impulsive spender, this can lead to an extremely conflictual relationship.  One partner feels stifled and the other feels terrified.  This sort of imbalance can really become toxic if one partner feels financially dependent on the other, such as if a mother takes off work for a few years to stay home with her kids.  Then, any differences in how the partners choose to spend money will become highlighted and can lead to tremendous hostility.  Just as in the other areas, the way that you were raised greatly impacts your views about money and how to spend it.  Conversations about the role of money in your upbringings, and attempts to use empathy and validation in your discussions, can make this area easier to talk about.

Now, even if you are incompatible in one or more of these areas, it does not mean that your entire relationship is doomed.  Counseling can often help partners clarify their needs and goals in relationships, and one or both may be able to become more flexible with introspection and effort.  Never lose hope!  Till we meet again, I remain, The Blogapist That Says “Incompatibility” is Usually Not The Main Issue, It’s When Partners Aren’t Willing To Change.

Listen Up, Everybody, Ramsey The Husky Puppy Has Some Important Things To Say

Is that a puppy you’re holding, or an adorable — if slightly hairy — child?

Before you weigh in, know this: The fuzzball in Kayla Cagnola’s arms is named “Ramsey,” and he’s already well on his way to speaking like a human. Apparently he burps like a human, too, though unfortunately there’s no video evidence of this unique trait.

In an email to The Huffington Post, Cagnola said Ramsey was about eight weeks old in the video, and had just received a scolding for eating her roommate’s dog’s food.

“When we told him to stop eating it that’s when he started ‘talking,'” Cagnola explained. “I guess he was trying to tell us that he was mad at us for not letting him eat the other dog’s food!”

Is Lilly Pulitzer x Target an Important Plus-Size Victory?

News of Target’s forthcoming Lilly Pulitzer collection was met with a lot of cheering, and nestled in there with the cheerful dinner plates and bright bathing suits was some more exciting news: Everything (save for one swimsuit) will be offered in plus sizes.

lilly-pulitzer-for-target-collaboration-swimsuits-clothing

It’s not the first time—the Calypso St. Barth collection included plus-sizing—but this feels especially noteworthy since the store’s range with Altuzarra didn’t and shoppers weren’t too happy, with blogger Chastity Garner publicly calling for a boycott.

“We have heard feedback from our plus-size guests that they are interested in shopping our limited-edition collaborations. We’re excited to offer a wider range of sizes for this collection, and we look forward to seeing how it performs and will continue to evaluate future programs,” a spokesperson told me via email. Plus sizes will be available only online, not in-store.

You can look at that last part as a test of sorts: If the demand is there with the retail dollars to prove it, it’ll be hard for Target to not listen and include plus-size options moving forward. That blogger who called them out about Altuzarra realizes it too, writing on her site after previewing the Lilly collection.

“This collaboration is a huge opportunity for plus-size shoppers to vote with their wallets and show Target you want plus sizes to be included in designer collections. If you love it, then shop it. The opposite is true as well. Don’t vote and we won’t likely be seeing plus sizes included in future collaborations.”

Happy to hear that the collection will include plus sizes? Surprised to hear that’s not a given?

An Important Reminder To Not Take Relationship Advice From Your Cat

Cats are great at squeezing into impossibly small spaces, making death-defying jumps, and showing your pet dog who’s boss whenever they get the chance.

They’re not that great at giving relationship cues. Unfortunately, one woman who recently wrote into a vet’s advice column in The Sonoma Valley Sun was not aware of that.

Reader “Picking Up Kitty’s Cues” wrote to Dr. Vallard C. Forsythe and said that she was convinced her husband was cheating on her based on the peculiar behavior of their cat, Muffin Top.

Apparently, while her husband Bill has been clocking in extra hours at work, Muffin Top’s been busy peeing on Bill’s side of the bed — and twice on his laundry. A coincidence? Kitty Cues thinks not.

“My theory is that Muffin Top knows that my husband is lying to me about something and is punishing him,” she writes. “Whey else would it only be HIS cat acting weird and peeing on HIS side of the bed?”

Smartly, Dr. Forsythe does’t venture into the human drama (“I wouldn’t even try to pontificate the answer to that one for all the gold in Fort Knox or backstage passes to an Usher concert.”) But he does offer some sage advice on ol’ Muffin Top’s health — and reminds his readers that our cats are not Iyanla from “Iyanla: Fix My Life”.

“While it is true that animals can often sense things before humans can, it sounds to me like you need to face your marital situation head on rather than let Muffin Top and Cupcake sell you a load of baked goods. Cats are very sensitive to change in the house and when tensions run high, their behavior can change. This can often show up in aberrant urination or defecation. Don’t forget it could also be that one cat has a bladder infection causing him to urinate on the unoccupied side of the bed.”

In other words, sometimes a cat peeing all over your bed is just a cat peeing all over your bed.

Taking a Hard Look at What’s Important: Validating our Values

When someone asks what our values are, we can probably start listing things that seem important to us in life right away. These things will determine how we assess our level of success, and so getting them right is very important.

However, as we eagerly list those values we may not quite as readily step back to decide which of those are actually ours and not ones that have been handed to us over the years. These ‘hand-me-down’ values are still very valid, so much so, that by now making that distinction may seem like a bit of a struggle.

I first noticed this when talking to students at the business school about their careers, goals and aspirations. What they considered to be important to them as they thought about their new post MBA lives was strikingly similar. It made sense; a set of like minded, highly driven individuals with similar backgrounds were likely to have common values. But equally, they were also very different people, and though I didn’t get this information the first time, after a bit of prodding I found out that:

Jo, had lost his father when young and grown up in a small home in Kansas, Peter was dealing with huge financial burdens and was born and raised in London, and Emily came from a long line of doctors in Kenya and was breaking away from her family tradition to pursue her dreams of becoming an entrepreneur. So, I pushed further and asked about their backgrounds and what that meant in terms of who they wanted to be, and how they defined success.

Soon the validation started trickling in,

I mean sure, when I say making an impact, of course I am talking much more than money.

When I said I’d never move back to Kansas, I mean I guess, if my mother needed me to, I would… It’s actually not so bad.

Hearing the students start to modify that initial checklist inspired me to do the same. Which of the values I held most dearly were ones I actively chose? It made me think about how far away from my Mediterranean origin I had come, and more so about the fact that I never really chose a fast paced, big city lifestyle, but yet here I was, allowing the city to define what success meant to me.

While we busily chase what everyone else chases, and make comparisons based on selective information through things like social media, it may be hard to really take the time to examine what really matters to us, personally. It gets even harder if it directly conflicts with what matters to those around us, or more accurately what appears to matter. I suppose we can call this, ‘value pressure.’

For the business students it was as important as ever to perform that validation, as they thought about their future careers and continued to define success for themselves, but I worried that might not happen. What I also realized was that we are all at risk of pursuing a path assuming it will define success for us. Without taking the time and being flexible enough to examine those values constantly and checking to see which hold true, and which lost value along the way, we may stop really remembering or trusting what we believe. It is then that we risk that all the effort we put into our endeavors, career and projects lead us down a path where our values just aren’t valid.

Put Down That Smartphone!: Your Eye Contact Establishes Who Is the Most Important Relationship for You at any Given Moment (really, really)

Dear Ms. Huffington:

I believe that my wife can thrive — and reach her maximum potential — by attending the Thrive Third Metric event in NYC; and also reading your book on the subject. In fact, I am convinced that she is in dire need of understanding your Thrive Third Metric model.

My wife has many things in common with you: brilliant, enterprising, accomplished, devoted, kind; and possesses the sort of inner light, depth, and true elegance of special beings. However, she frequently is unable to disconnect. She seems to misplace her “off switch.” Often, she is a slave to technology. Far too often, a ring tone or vibration, from her smartphone elicits her immediate attention. She needs to understand your Third Metric “manifesto.” And she needs to understand that her eyeballs signal very potently, at every moment, who has the true priority of her quite formidable, yet human, attention span.

I bought a ticket for my wife to attend the Thrive Third Metric event on Thursday and Friday of this week. My wife was reluctant to take time from her duties to be in NYC for 48 hours. It wasn’t until you “touched her” that she relented. I am thankful to you. You see, my wife’s well-being is monumentally important to me. So much so, that I took the huge liberty of attempting to reach you “cold,” to ask for your help. My wife is capable of doing great things to benefit the communities she belongs to; if she doesn’t burn out. If she thrives.

All indications are that my wife will be at the New York City Center on this next Thursday and Friday. Thank you for taking the time, and making the effort, to send an email to my wife. And thank you for raising consciousness that the Third Metric is essential to thriving.

Sincerely,

Manuel R.D.J. vW.

The 3 Most Important Questions You Could Ask Yourself When You’re Stressed

Do you secretly thrive on stress?

While none of us would like to openly admit it, we sometimes indulge in the feelings that come from a tense situation. Whether it’s pushing our work back until we’re on the brink of a deadline or even just immersing ourselves in a friend’s personal drama — we all get a motivating energy from the adrenaline-pumping emotions that come with a high-risk situation.

While research has proven that a little stress may actually be a good thing, like anything else, too much of it can have its damaging effects. Heidi Hanna, a fellow at the American Institute of Stress and the author of Stressaholic: 5 Steps to Transform Your Relationship with Stress, says that many of us even can form a stress addiction. “When it comes to stress, there’s a chemical response happening in the brain that keeps us amped up and we become reliant on that stimulation,” Hanna tells The Huffington Post. “It can become like any other addiction. We are hardwired to be overstimulated.”

So how do we move beyond our natural tendency to feed into stress? When it comes to managing its energy, whether it’s an overwhelming negative or a little motivational, there are simple coping mechanisms we can employ so our brains stay flexible during times of trepidation. Below find three questions Hanna suggests asking yourself when you’re feeling stressed in order to get yourself back on track.

1. “Is this stress I’m feeling mine or someone else’s?”
stressed people

At the first signs of stress, we should identify the source of the energy right away, Hanna says. Are you stressed because of your own situation or is that energy really coming from somewhere else? By possessing an awareness of the source, we’re able to target how to handle it. “It’s important to understand that we do pick up stress from other people because the brain is so sensitive to our environment,” she explains. “We notice someone’s breath rates or that they’re talking really quickly and we pick that up and mirror that.”

2. “Am I able to help?”
stress

Once you’ve identified where the stress is coming from, the next way to handle it is to realistically asses whether or not you’re able to help or change the situation. If the negative energy is a result of other people and you’re suffering from secondhand stress, Hanna says you need to realize there is only so much you can feasibly do in order to dissolve it.

That goes for your own stress and the stress caused by others. “Having a go-to trick to manage stress is common sense but it’s not always common practice,” she advises. “We’d all love to help everybody but if we’re feeling drained, it’s just not always possible. It’s important at the first sign of stress that you have go-to strategies, like practicing gratitude. It allows your brain to stay more flexible so you can think more positively.”

3. “What boundaries do I need to establish?”
relaxing in office

When dealing with stress, particularly in the workplace, Hanna suggests establishing your own sacred spaces or breaks. Going for a walk, taking a few minutes for some breathing exercises or even just grabbing a coffee can allow you to remove yourself from the situation and help you avoid expanding your stressful thoughts. “Be protective of your boundaries. That recovery time is just as important as any other appointment or meeting you schedule throughout your day,” she explains.

Overall, when it comes to overcoming your attraction to stressful energy, Hanna says it’s all about training yourself just as you would for any other routine or habit. “Think of relaxation training like training any other muscle in the gym,” she advises. “Most of us have unknowingly trained ourselves to be dependent on stress and now is the time to change that.”
