Inside Kate Middleton’s Clever Wardrobe Trick to Never Upstage the Bride as a Wedding Guest

All eyes are usually on Kate Middleton — but the royal knows exactly how to let a friend have her time in the spotlight.

On Saturday afternoon, members of the royal family stepped out for the wedding of one of Kate’s closest friends, Sophie Carter, who married Robert Snuggs at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Norfolk.

The royal mom of three wore a cornflower blue Catherine Walker & Co coat dress for the special occasion — a recycled outfit! Princess Kate previously wore the piece when she arrived in Berlin with Prince William and their two eldest children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, during their July 2017 tour of Poland and Germany.

Just as she perfectly matched her family in blue for their tour, Kate coordinated with her children for the weekend wedding. Charlotte, 3, was one of three bridesmaids, while George, 5, was among the chosen four page boys, and they were outfitted by one of Kate’s favorite childrenswear designers, Amaia. Charlotte wore a linen dress in ivory with royal blue embroidered edging from the upmarket label. Meanwhile, George wore matching cropped blue trousers, with an off-white linen shirt accessorized with a blue cummerbund, also from Amaia.

Kate made her outfit wedding chic by adding a matching floral headpiece by milliner Juliette Botterill, who is becoming a go-to for royal family members like Princess Beatrice, Princess Eugenie and Zara Tindall.

At the May wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, she pulled an epic royal rewear with one of her favorite pieces: an off-white bespoke Alexander McQueen coat dress. In July 2015, Kate wore the structured-collared coat dress to Princess Charlotte’s christening. She pulled out the ensemble again at the Queen’s official birthday celebrations, Trooping the Colour, in 2016.

Inside RHOP Star Candiace Dillard’s Romantic, ‘Incredible’ D.C. Wedding: ‘It Was Like a Dream’

Candiace Dillard really didn’t want to cry. And then she saw Chris Bassett’s eyes across the room.

The Real Housewives of Potomac star was doing her best to control her emotions on Saturday as she prepared to wed Bassett in front of 260 friends and family at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in Washington, D.C. But as strong as she was, nothing prepared her for the moment she started walking down the aisle and locked eyes with her soon-to-be husband.

“When they opened the doors, I only saw him,” Dillard tells PEOPLE exclusively. “I was connected to Chris’ eyes. And he was crying, so I was weeping. There’s an ugly cry moment where I had to stop and scrunch up my face. To be walking towards the man who is going to be your husband? That was such a powerful and incredible feeling.”

“That is what I will always remember, looking in his eyes,” she continues. “It felt so comfortable and so right and so ‘This is where I’m supposed to be.’ And I was so overwhelmed by that feeling, and the look of the room, and seeing all the people around us. It was like a dream.”

Dillard and Bassett’s nuptials were a long time coming for the pair, who met while working at a restaurant together in D.C. and dated for nearly two years before he proposed in May 2017.

Their wedding planning was captured for the RHOP cameras, and while some of the tougher moments made for compelling TV, the final affair was smooth sailing.

“Everything was perfect — we were just blown away by it all,” Dillard says of the affair, which was designed by Strawberry Milk Events on her theme of “cosmopolitan sophistication with a touch of southern class.”

For the ceremony, the grand Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium was decked out with a mirrored walkway, boxes of white roses, floating chandeliers and a custom-made gold mirror arbor, flanked with cascading flowers by Edge Floral Event Design.

“They just showed out,” she says. “They got my vision perfectly. As far as the look and the aesthetic of the venue, I wouldn’t have done anything differently.”

Cocktail hour and a reception followed, with a feast of hors d’oeuvres and a seated dinner from Spilled Milk Catering that included lamb chops, a summer watermelon salad, short ribs and a sea bass with dill — an option that referenced their wedding hashtag.

As for the raspberry almond wedding cake? That was from ButterCream Bakeshop.

“The food was friggin’ amazing,” Dillard, a former Miss United States, recalls. “Delicious. The presentation was art deco, a little victorian — it matched all the themes I wanted in the wedding. And the cake was so, so good. We got nothing but great feedback from our guests on the food. So mission accomplished.”

Music from We the Fix and DJ Tryfe kept the guests moving. “We definitely danced the night away,” Dillard says. “I had a good sweat going on so I know I danced. My feet are still in shambles, so my body is telling me I had a good time.”

There were speeches throughout the night too, including ones from her dad and stepdad (who both walked her down the aisle) and one from Dillard’s mom. Bassett’s two best men, his brother his best friend, also gave speeches. “I wish we had maybe an extra hour at the reception, because all the speeches were amazing. I didn’t want them to stop,” Dillard says.

But of course, it was all about Dillard’s dress — or, in this case, dresses. Both were custom designed by New York designer Karen Sabag, who worked closely with Dillard over an eight-month period to craft the perfect look.

For the ceremony and reception, Dillard wore a flowing ballgown, its imprinted pearl cream silk organza draped over a fitted corset and continuing onto a skirt of 70 yards. Soft and dramatic at the same time, the gown was finished with two French bows on the shoulders, beaded (by hand) with 80 yards of Swarovski crystals. A clean, long cathedral vail — pinned into her soft curls — finished the look, with a blusher till the floor.

“That dress was everything I wanted it to be and then some,” Dillard says. “I knew I wanted a ballgown and I tried on several, but they just weren’t doing it. But Karen made it happen. It had the perfect drop-waist bodice, because when you’re a short girl wearing a ballgown, you have to be careful about it cutting you off on the wrong lines. And it was so light. It looked heavy, but I was really able to dance and jump around and move in it. I loved it.”

A a second dress — a halter with cold shoulder sleeves and a mini poof skirt in a metallic flower sequence fabric — made its debut at the afterparty.

RELATED VIDEO: The Real Housewives of Potomac Go Makeup-Free for PEOPLE

Now that the wedding is behind them, Dillard and Bassett — a restaurateur and father of three — have a honeymoon to plan. They’ve got some time, the two not planning on heading out on the getaway until January, when they can get some good vacation time scheduled.

“We’re thinking either Greece or Dubai, though we’ve also gotten some good suggestions in the Amalfi coast and Thailand,” Dillard explains. “What’s important for us in a honeymoon destination is that we’re able to immerse ourselves in a culture. Not just the food and the libations, but also being around the people and watching how those countries live. So all those places check those boxes.”

And in the meantime, they’ll be reminiscing about their big day for years to come.

“It feels so crazy,” Dillard says. “As soon as Chris and I walked back down the aisle together, the first thing I said to him was, ‘Can we do it again?’ And that’s how I feel about it now. I’ll remember it forever.”

The Real Housewives of Potomac airs Sundays (8 p.m. ET) on Bravo.

George Clooney Takes Tequila Shot for His 57th Birthday! Inside How He and Amal Are Celebrating

Happy birthday, George Clooney!

The actor, who turns 57 on Sunday, celebrated the milestone by doing a shot of Casamigos tequila with his longtime pal and business partner Rande Gerber — and PEOPLE has the exclusive video above.

As the Casamigos team cheers for the guys in the background, Clooney and Gerber, 56, raise a Casamigos board featuring fastened shot glasses. Clooney’s face says it all, as he goes from processing the tequila to smiling before jokingly falling backwards, making everyone at the celebration laugh and clap.

Clooney has been in Italy for several weeks working on pre-production for his Hulu Catch-22 series, which is scheduled to begin shooting in nearby Sardinia later this month. His father-in-law, Ramzi Alamuddin, has been celebrating his own 80th birthday with friends and family at the Clooneys’ Lake Como residence.

The actor and his wife are slated to be back in New York City for the glamorous Met Gala on Monday, where Amal is co-hosting.

This time last year, the Clooneys were preparing to welcome their twins, Ella and Alexander, who will celebrate their first birthdays next month. “ how much I thought I had in control and how little control I actually have,” Clooney told PEOPLE of raising the twins last fall. “I have none! I think everybody quickly realizes that.”

He opened up about how becoming a dad has changed his life in September, telling The Hollywood Reporter, “The first thing you think is, ‘I hope I don’t screw this up.’ I mean, look, we are all responsible for things in life, and Amal and I are responsible for each other in a way — we look out for one another and we care about one another. But you are really responsible for two kids.”

He added, “I want them to be happy. I want them to have a sense of humor. I want them to be interested in things. I want them to be compassionate about other people’s plights. Because that’s the thing, you know? You have to have some sort of empathy.”

RELATED: George & Amal Clooney Show Support for Gun Violence Prevention at D.C. March For Our Lives Event

The actor has also given more insight recently into the beginnings of his relationship with Amal, 40, whom he married in 2014. “Of course she was beautiful,” he told Vogue in April. “But I also thought she was fascinating, and I thought she was brilliant. Her life was incredibly exciting — the clients she was taking on and the superhuman work that she was doing. I was taken with her from the moment I saw her.”

He previously opened up about meeting Amal at his Lake Como home during an appearance on David Letterman’s Netflix show My Next Guest Needs No Introduction. Clooney said he hadn’t heard of Amal, but his agent knew all about her and made sure the Up in the Air star wasn’t going to waste this opportunity. “I got a call from my agent who said, ‘I met this woman who is coming to your house, who you’re going to marry,’” George told Letterman. “It really worked out that way.”

Over the past several months, the couple have been spotted stepping out for romantic dinner dates in New York City, where the international human rights attorney has been teaching at Columbia University. With Amal’s return to Columbia University as a visiting professor of law and senior fellow with the Human Rights Institute, the humanitarian lawyer and the actor have been spending more time on the East Coast.

As for his professional life, Clooney, who hasn’t starred in a film since 2016’s Money Monster, admitted earlier this year that acting is no longer a priority for him. “Look, I acted for a long time and, you know, I’m 56. I’m not the guy that gets the girl anymore,” he told The Sunday Times, before adding that at least he “shouldn’t be the guy that gets the girl.”

The father of two continued, “But, look, if somebody’s got Paul Newman in The Verdict, I’d jump. But there aren’t that many like that. Acting used to be how I paid the rent, but I sold a tequila company for a billion f— dollars. I don’t need money.”

In June, Clooney confirmed that he and his two business partners — Gerber and real estate mogul Mike Meldeman — sold their Tequila company, Casamigos, for $ 1 billion.

Clooney has also been more outspoken politically this year, often criticizing President Donald Trump. But he told The Sunday Times in the same interview that he does not plan on running for office. “So many people since Trump was elected have really been pushing on me to get more involved in actual politics, specifically at the highest office,” he said, before admitting, “I don’t have political aspirations.”

John Cena & Nikki Bella: Inside Their Canceled Nuptials on What Would Have Been Their Wedding Day

May 5 would have been John Cena and Nikki Bella‘s wedding day.

However, Bella, 34, called off the engagement three weeks before the WWE pair would walk down the aisle during their destination ceremony. Sources previously told PEOPLE that her decision to break up was due to their differing stances on marriage and having kids.

The nuptials would’ve occurred over a year after Cena, 40, proposed to Bella on live TV during WrestleMania 33 in April 2017. And there was even a TV special planned about their wedding set to air in July, but the concept was scrapped after they split after six years together.

RELATED: John Cena’s ‘Ups and Downs’ with Ex-Fiancée Nikki Bella — in His Own Words

While Cena and Bella will not be going ahead with their “I dos,” here are all the wedding details they had shared with their fans and viewers of Total Bella and Total Divas.

The Dress

The same month she accepted Cena’s proposal, Bella was already in full wedding mode as she spoke candidly about what she envisioned for her big day.

“I’m kind of happy I’m getting married in my 30s, because in my 20s I would’ve had something obnoxious, princess-like Kate Middleton. I want lace I think. I want something very classy, like classic and sexy. Something classic, form-fitting. I do want a veil,” Bella told PEOPLE in April 2017, jokingly adding, “Who am I without cleavage?”

Also in April 2017, Bella took a trip to New York Bridal Fashion Week to look at wedding dresses from Romona Keveza and Marchesa. In August 2017, Bella revealed hints about her gown, telling PEOPLE Now, “I can say that it’s a Marchesa.”

During an episode of Total Divas that aired in January 2018, Brie Bella surprised her twin sister with a bridal shopping trip, during which Nikki tried on multiple dress options.

Meanwhile, Cena did not opt for a custom look.

“I also have a few decent-looking tuxes in the wardrobe already, so depending on the colors and the schemes of the wedding and the theme, I might already have something,” he told PEOPLE in July 2017. “I have a few tailors that I work with, just because I’m not exactly somebody who can buy a suit off the rack.”

Wedding Planning

Following the engagement, Bella and Cena expressed their excitement for their wedding.

“I think everyone’s going to think I’m a bridezilla. I really do. I think I’m just so happy to be engaged and that John decided he wanted to get married. I just want to take this in and make it fun and happy,” Bella told PEOPLE in April 2017. “The minute it’s not fun, it’s like why are we doing this? This is why he didn’t want to do it, right? So I want to make it easy and romantic and intimate. Make it for us, no one else but us.”

In July 2017, Bella announced that Brie would be matron of honor.

Meanwhile, Cena told PEOPLE he doesn’t need all the pomp and circumstance.

“I’ve stressed to Nicole that I would really like to get it done because I guess it took me so long to ask, now that I’ve made the commitment I really just want to get married,” he said in July 2017.

“I want it yesterday, but we have a date,” Cena said in April, shortly before their breakup. “I’m excited, but I also have great perspective that I want the day to be important for Nicole.”

He added, “All that information rests on her shoulders. I’m involved in every single step of the process, but I am like the last checkpoint. So, let’s say, décor will be chosen. And then I’ll be given three options but be nudged to like number two. I will politely agree to number two, but I am very much actively a part of the process.”

In October 2017, Bella, who was competing on Dancing with the Stars at the time, revealed that the wedding date was pushed back. “We changed the date and location,” she said, adding that the adjustment was spurred by “schedules” as well as their many responsibilities and commitments.

Bachelorette Party — But No Bachelor Party

In March, Nikki celebrated with a nine-day bachelorette party in Paris with Brie and their closest friends.

Meanwhile, Cena said he had no interest in a stag night.

“No, I mean, why? Help me out. What is a bachelor party? I’m gonna skip it,” he told E! News in March.

The Big Day

While John and Nikki will not be tying the knot, Brie recently told PEOPLE that she will be there for her sister on their wedding date.

Brie said that she was considering planning a girls trip for her twin to keep their minds distracted. “I’m throwing some stuff out there to her. We might do something, we are deciding. There’s a part of her that just wants to be home,” she said in late April.

“I just told her, you lead the way and I’ll follow. … If it’s at home and eating pizza and devouring ice cream, I’m down for that or if want to escape to Napa and down a lot of wine, I’m down for that as well,” Brie added.

The mother of one also added that Total Bellas viewers will see everything that led up to the former couple’s separation.

“I have to give a lot of credit to John and Nicole. They really opened up their lives and they really wanted to close the curtain and be like this is it, we’re done,” she said. “My sister is really great with her fans in a way where she lets them connect with her. She lets them like go, ‘My life isn’t perfect and isn’t easy’ and lets them see the playbook of her life.”

Justin Theroux Is ‘Doing His Thing’ Since Jennifer Aniston Split: Inside His Single Life

Justin Theroux is settling into his life as a newly single man.

The actor, 46, has been sticking to his normal routine since announcing his split from Jennifer Aniston last month.

“He’s just doing his thing,” a source tells PEOPLE. “He eats at the same time, goes to the same places, hangs with the same people.”

Since the split, the actor has been spending most of his time in New York City, where he is surrounded by a close-knit group of friends including restauranteur Carlos Quirarte and Amy Sedaris.

According to E! News, Theroux recently hosted a small dinner party in N.Y.C. for Quirarte. The restaurant owner is known for his NYC-based host-spot The Smile, which Theroux frequently visits.

Earlier this month, Theroux was spotted on a solo outing, attending a Paris fashion week show.

The actor has also recently signed on to star in Justine Bateman’s upcoming directorial debut Violet. Theroux will play a mischevious voice inside the head of a film executive.

Splash News

Meanwhile, Aniston has been “staying busy” since the split, a source previously told PEOPLE.

The actress, 49, headed out for Molly McNearney‘s 40th birthday party on March 11, where she posed with her pals — including the birthday girl, Tobey Maguire‘s estranged wife Jen Meyer, Jason Bateman‘s wife Amanda Aanka and her manager Aleen Keshishian — in a photo booth.

On Feb. 15, Aniston, 49, and Theroux announced that they had split after two and a half years of marriage — and seven years as a couple.

“In an effort to reduce any further speculation, we have decided to announce our separation,” the former couple said in a joint statement. “This decision was mutual and lovingly made at the end of last year. We are two best friends who have decided to part ways as a couple, but look forward to continuing our cherished friendship.”

As reported by PEOPLE, the pair’s different lifestyles — and long separations — played a role in the couple’s decision to end their marriage.

“During his relationship with Jen, Justin’s life in N.Y.C. was always very different from his L.A. life,” an Aniston source previously told PEOPLE.

Stadium Goods to Open Store Inside Nordstrom

Stadium Goods is aligning with another big entity.
LVMH Luxury Ventures recently backed the streetwear and sneaker retailer, which is now partnering with Nordstrom to operate a concept space within its new men’s store, which is slated to open on April 12 at 235 West 57th Street.
“Sneakers are the fastest growing category in men’s footwear and partnering with Stadium Goods punctuates our commitment to showcasing the best and most rare sneakers from the hottest brands that have long sold out elsewhere,” said Kristin Frossmo, executive vice president and general merchandise manager for shoes at Nordstrom. “Sneakers have disrupted fashion and are now being mixed with everyday looks — from desk to dinner. We couldn’t be more excited to be Stadium Goods first retail partner of choice.”
This innovative deal brings after-market sneakers into a retail space that sells brand new shoes. According to John McPheters, who cofounded Stadium Goods with Jed Stiller, this has been in the works for a couple of years, but it wasn’t a difficult sell.
“We’ve spent so much time trying to elevate the after-market experience,” said McPheters. “And we feel like we are getting to a great place to be able to sell our product in Nordstrom. It’s a

Inside Khloé Kardashian’s Balloon-Filled, Perfectly Pink Baby Shower — See the Photos

Showered with love!

Khloé Kardashian followed in her sisters’ footsteps and threw an extravagant (and super pink) baby shower on Saturday to celebrate her first child, a daughter, with boyfriend Tristan Thompson.

The 33-year-old reality star was “beaming” during the shower at the Hotel Bel-Air in Los Angeles, a source tells PEOPLE. The insider adds that Khloé repeatedly gushed over the ornate decorations.

“The shower was very over-the-top, but absolutely stunning. It was like a pink dream. There were pink flowers, including roses, everywhere!” the source says. “As guests entered the ballroom, they were greeted by gorgeous, hanging flower decorations. There were lots and lots of pink balloons. Pink lights also gave the shower a very romantic feeling.”

In addition to a pink neon sign that read “Baby Thompson” and an enormous elephant topiary, the source says every plate setting was decorated with a mini giraffe.

“Everywhere you looked, the attention to details was very impressive. It was truly the most special and fun shower.”

The staple of any Kardashian party, a photo booth, was also a highlight of the bash. The black and white photos came out with “Baby Thompson” and a heart print on the bottom.

The entire KarJenner family was on hand to honor the new arrival, and they documented the affair on their social media pages. New mom Kylie Jenner posted photos getting ready with BFF Jordyn Woods, then shared a selfie with three of her sisters.

The insider says family matriarch Kris Jenner gave a “very sweet” speech. “Kris thanked everyone for joining them. She expressed how proud and excited she is for Khloé,” says the source.

Both Kendall Jenner and Kourtney Kardashian snapped photos of their grandmother Mary Jo “M.J.” Houghton at the bash, with the 22-year-old model captioning her shot, “Legend.”

On top of dining on Thai chicken salad, farro and red quinoa salad with sides of french fries, and macaroni and cheese, the source shares, Khloé made sure to honor some birthday girls.

For more coverage, follow our babies magazine on Flipboard.

The mom-to-be posted video of three unicorn-themed cakes on her Instagram story, explaining they were for pals Malika and Khadijah Haqq and Jen Atkins, who were celebrating birthdays.

Other guests included Kylie Richards, Larsa Pippen and Maria Menounos, who snapped a selfie with Kylie and Khloé.

Khloé also posted pictures to Instagram in which she posed with sister Kourtney to share her excitement over the event.

“Had the most unbelievable baby shower – we felt so much love! #ad So grateful to be surrounded by a beautiful support system,” she wrote, promising she’d share more photos of the celebration.

Inside Bachelor in Paradise’s Tanner and Jade Roper Tolbert’s Life as New Parents

Jade Roper Tolbert and husband Tanner Tolbert are taking new parenthood in stride.

The reality stars, who fell in love on season 2 of Bachelor in Paradise, welcomed their daughter Emerson “Emmy” Avery in August and now reveal to PEOPLE the ways their lives — and marriage — have shifted.

“It changes your priorities in life and makes you think of things a little differently,” says Tolbert, 30. “Watching Jade be a mom has been pretty awesome.”

Adds Roper Tolbert, 31, “I love being a mom. We’ve been enjoying just being new parents and every new thing is so exciting for us. She’s a little treasure.”

Of their 6-month-old’s most recent milestones, the couple says she has started eating solid foods, rolling over, making consonant sounds and teething. They also took her traveling for the first time in January on a trip to St. Lucia.

“It was awesome, but in hindsight, we probably should’ve brought my mom or someone to babysit so we could have a little bit of alone time because that was tough,” Tolbert says.

RELATED: Bachelor in Paradise‘s Tanner and Jade Roper Tolbert Show Off Daughter’s “Bright and Open” Nursery — See the Pics

Finding alone time to spend together in general is tough for the two these days, but Tolbert says that luckily his mom moved back to Kansas City, Missouri, and has become their “resident babysitter.”

“If we do date nights, it’s something easy like a movie where we’re gone for a couple hours and then we always just end up talking about her anyway,” Roper Tolbert says as her husband adds, “The first date we went on, we went to a movie and Jade started crying.”

“That was when she was really little,” Roper Tolbert explains. “She was maybe 4 weeks old and the hormones, they get you. Now it’s nice.”

For more coverage, follow our babies magazine on Flipboard.

Roper Tolbert’s next trip will include a visit to see her fellow Bachelor in Paradise alum and best friend Carly Waddell at the end of March so she and Emerson can meet Waddell and husband Evan Bass‘ new baby girl, Isabella Evelyn, whom they welcomed on Feb. 15.

“We’ll get to meet her baby and see if they’re little besties,” she says. “It has been fun being able to relate to her because not a lot of my friends have babies yet.”

As to how Roper Tolbert thinks Waddell will be as a mom, she says, “I know she’ll do great,” adding, “Even what I’ve seen so far, you can already tell she has taken on motherhood so gracefully.”

RELATED: Bachelor in Paradise Alums Carly Waddell and Evan Bass Welcome Daughter Isabella Evelyn

Like Waddell and Bass, the Tolberts tied the knot in a televised ceremony in Mexico in February 2016. One day, they plan on sharing the story of how they met with Emerson.

“She’s the first Paradise baby,” Roper Tolbert says. “She has her own little Instagram account and so a lot of it has to do with that. I feel like someday she’s going to want to know, ‘Why are all of these people following me?’ We’ll have to eventually share the story.”

Whether they would let her go on one of The Bachelor franchises like her parents, Tolbert says, “I don’t know if the show will be around that long but if she wanted to, who are we to say no? It’d be pretty hypocritical of us if we told her no.”

“I would like to say, ‘No, I wouldn’t let her go on the show,’ ” Roper Tolbert says. “But also, if that was something she was really interested in doing, then I would support her.”

RELATED: Bachelor in Paradise’s Jade Roper Tolbert Details the Night of Her 7-Hour Labor: “I Kept Telling Myself I Can Do This”

Despite their busy new lives as parents, Tolbert is working on getting rid of his “dad bod” with Nutrisystem For Men.

“I didn’t even realize that I had gained some weight during her pregnancy because I never used a scale or anything like that,” he says. “I wear a lot of sweatpants. I started Nutrisystem and lost 16 pounds in six weeks. I’m back to my normal weight and feeling a lot better.”

Plus, their life might get even busier soon, as they both want additional kids. “We’re definitely going to at least try to have some more,” Tolbert says. “We’re debating between three and four right now.”

Roper Tolbert agrees. “He wants that boy so if the next one’s a boy, then we’re probably going to have three.”

Loot Box Debate Raged Inside Hi-Rez Studios – Report

The Paladins Cards Unbound update back in November was a controversial one, to say the least. It made major changes to the way the game’s stat-boosting cards are obtained and used, angering many of its players — and according to one source within developer Hi-Rez Studios (who reached out to me under the condition that they remain anonymous), the update was just as controversial within the studio as well. Hi-Rez COO Todd Harris confirmed to IGN that this claim has truth to it, but also said that the studio is ultimately confident in the decision that was made.

Jennifer Aniston Turns 49! Inside Her Married Life with Justin Theroux

Jennifer Aniston sure does have a lot of reasons to celebrate.

The actress rings in her 49th birthday on Sunday, just days ahead of celebrating Valentine’s Day with husband Justin Theroux.

The occasion marks another busy year for the couple — Aniston recently signed on with Reese Witherspoon for a new Apple TV series, while Theroux filmed the comedy The Spy Who Dumped Me in Budapest.

“They have figured out a life that works for them,” a source previously told PEOPLE of the couple that married in 2015. “Jennifer’s life with Justin is great.”

A second source said the distance helps them appreciate the time they do have together even more.

“This has not hurt their marriage at all, it seems to help,” an entertainment source previously told PEOPLE. “They love and respect each other and do spend a lot of time apart. For them, it is a healthy part of their romance.”

Added the first source: “By not spending every minute together, it’s like their honeymoon is lasting longer.”

But when they aren’t working, Aniston and Theroux, 46, enjoy a quiet life at the Los Angeles home, which they designed together.

“There was a time when I thought there was something romantic about picking up and trotting off somewhere different every three months. Now I’m becoming more particular about the projects I take,” Aniston told Architectural Digest. “I look around at my husband and my dogs and our home, and there’s nowhere else I want to be.”

Man Charged in Death of Oregon Model Whose Dismembered Body Was Stuffed in Suitcases Inside BMW

Oregon authorities filed charges Wednesday against a man they allege murdered Sara Zghoul, the 28-year-old mother whose decapitated and dismembered body was found last Thursday stuffed inside two separate suitcases in the trunk of a BMW.

Jeremiah Johnston, 35, is being held without bail in the Washington County Jail on two criminal counts: murder and abuse of a corpse.

The arrest was confirmed in a press release issued late Wednesday. PEOPLE also accessed online court records that detail the charges against Johnston.

Property records obtained by PEOPLE show a listing for Johnston in a house owned by his parents close to Zghoul’s address in Aloha, Oregon.

• Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Click here to get breaking crime news, ongoing trial coverage and details of intriguing unsolved cases in the True Crime Newsletter.

The remains of the print model and aspiring actress were recovered Jan. 25, from a car that was parked in a neighborhood in Aloha, Oregon.

Acting on a tip from an unnamed source, officers allegedly found a hysterical Johnston in the woods nearby, moments after he had allegedly attempted suicide.

According to investigators, Johnston cut his own throat and tried to slash his wrists as police were closing in on him.

Police have yet to discuss a possible motive for the grisly killing.

Investigators have allegedly established a link between Johnston and the BMW that was holding Zghoul’s remains, but have not said who owns the vehicle.

This week, family and friends remembered the young mother for her positive spirit and good nature.

Johnston has not entered a plea to the two charges, and has no attorney of record.

He does, however, have a record of convictions for identity theft and both gun and drug possession, online court records indicate.

• For more compelling true crime coverage, follow our Crime magazine on Flipboard.

According to court records, Johnston was sentenced in 2015 to 23 months in prison for delivery of cocaine, felon in possession of a firearm and possession of cocaine, heroin and methamphetamine.

This past August, he was arrested for cocaine possession — three months after being released from prison.

In September, he pleaded guilty to the charge and was placed on probation for 18 months. He was also allowed to enter a treatment program, court records confirm.

Anyone who may have information on this case is asked to contact Washington County Sheriff’s Office detectives at (503) 846-2700.

Bye Bye, Brit: Inside the Final Show of Britney Spears’ 4-Year Las Vegas Residency

After four years as one of the top acts on one of the world’s most famous streets, Britney Spears has wrapped her residency show on the legendary Las Vegas Strip.

“It’s bittersweet,” she said on Instagram before the last performance.

The pop star initially launched her “Britney: Piece of Me” show at Planet Hollywood in December 2013. Originally slated for a two-year run, the pop extravaganza was extended for two more years after the show sold out time and time again.

In capping off her final show on New Year’s Eve, Spears did what she’s done for four years: She delivered her hits. For about 100 minutes, Spears was nonstop, dancing around the stage seductively when she wasn’t backstage for one of her many costume changes.

“It’s almost f—ing New Years! Who’s going to get naughty tonight,” she asked the audience full of diehard fans at 11 p.m., many of whom wore shirts bearing her face.

The “Womanizer” singer came out to “Work Bitch” in knee-high boots and a cleavage-baring black lingerie bodysuit. Later, in one of the highlights of the night, she showed off her midriff while riding an oversized guitar like a mechanical bull. As Spears has done since day one, she brought out a guest from the audience during “Freak Show.” She dressed the man, named Casey, in S&M gear and playfully forced him crawl on the ground while she lightly spanked him with a whip.

“Four years, who knew,” Spears said as she left the stage for the last time. However, there is a real possibility that Spears could be returning to the desert again. As her final show grew near, chatter in entertainment circles suggested that Spears would eventually sign on for another Las Vegas residency in the near future.

RELATED VIDEO: Britney Spears Shows Off Sexy Moves in Behind-The-Scenes Rehearsal Videos

Spears’ show helped usher in a new era for Las Vegas in regards to residency acts. The city was once known as a place for older artists to live out their glory years. Thanks in part to Spears, Vegas reinvented itself as a place to see top younger artists, including Jennifer Lopez, Backstreet Boys, Bruno Mars, all of whom currently have residency shows. Lady Gaga announced that she, too, will begin a Vegas residency in late 2018.

Street Signs: Inside the Restless Mind of Kith’s Ronnie Fieg

NEW YORK — It’s easy to imagine loving shoes, but imagine loving shoes so much that, at 13, you’d rather spend time with them in a stockroom than hang out with friends. Now imagine, 10 or so years later, partnering with Nike, Asics, Adidas and others to rework the designs you used to study in that stockroom. And then imagine finally selling those shoes and wearing those shoes, but, to your surprise, they don’t quite fit. This is how Ronnie Fieg, creative director and chief executive officer of Kith, feels at the moment.
“Where I am right now is like walking around in a pair of shoes and they look fly and you love them, but they are too small. Well, actually, they are too big now. It’s not too big. I don’t want to say that, but the business is a lot bigger than I imagined,” Fieg said in an interview at Kith’s brand new SoHo office in Manhattan, which is a stone’s throw away from its recently opened store on Lafayette Street and a couple of floors above Kering’s New York headquarters. “I’m always uncomfortable because I’ve never been here before. Inside Naturi Naughton’s Mint-Green Nursery for Daughter Zuri: ‘I Wanted It to Feel Like Serenity’

Naturi Naughton‘s daughter Zuri is only 3 months old, but she’s already set up in (serene) style.

The Power star, 33, gave PEOPLE an exclusive glimpse inside her baby girl’s mint-green nursery, created in collaboration with interior designer Nicole Gibbons and Pottery Barn Kids.

“I was thinking of something that felt really peaceful, very feminine, but not overly drowned in pink. I wanted it to feel like serenity,” Naughton tells PEOPLE of her inspiration behind the space’s look. “My whole theme was getting away: You can fly, you can go wherever you want to go in life.”

She adds, “I just wanted to feel inspired every time she looked around, with the maps and the birds, the-world-is-your-oyster kind of vibe, and nothing is impossible.”

“The space is bright and airy with a soft, feminine color palette and includes subtle influences of her Caribbean heritage throughout,” says Gibbons. “The nursery is sweet yet sophisticated so that it can easily transition as baby Zuri grows.”

Want all the latest pregnancy and birth announcements, plus celebrity mom blogs? Click here to get those and more in the PEOPLE Babies newsletter.

The color theme throughout the space was actually Naughton’s boyfriend Ben‘s brainchild. “My boyfriend chose the green, that mint green,” says the actress. “He chose that color and first I was like ‘Green? We can’t do green. That’s not girly.’ But I realized he was like, ‘Let’s do something unique and different.’ ”

Zuri’s nursery includes a number of sweet elements from Pottery Barn Kids, including the Blythe Spindle Crib ($ 699), Elephant Side Table ($ 349), Eva Floral Medallion Rug ($ 149 to $ 699), Elsie Cloud Dresser ($ 799) and Naughton’s favorite piece: the Modern Wingback Glider & Recliner Rocker ($ 1,119 to $ 2,199).

“ is amazing because I’m also breastfeeding,” says the new mom. “That is a chance to feel like me and my baby girl get a chance to connect, because she’s looking up at me, I’m looking down at her, I’m feeding her, I’m rocking, I put her to sleep in that chair. We love it.”

RELATED: Naturi Naughton Shares Maternity Portraits Ahead of Daughter’s Arrival: “I’m Looking Forward to This Next Level of Life”

As far as the décor goes, one of the elements close to Naughton’s heart is the inspiring framed wall art above her daughter’s crib, flanked by a few feathered baubles.

“I love how the doves go across the wall with the sign that says ‘Oh the places you’ll go,’ “ shares the actress. “When I see those doves, every time that I walk in, I just feel like I want to fly away.”

Other sweet pieces featured in the adventure-encouraging nursery are Pottery Barn Kids’ Lamb Plush Collection ($ 19 to $ 49), Metallic Wool Storage bins ($ 59 to $ 79), Ombre Geo Lumbar Decorative Pillows ($ 24) and a wooden toy train ($ 39).

Zuri — who “only wakes up once at night” and whose name means “beautiful” in Swahili, according to Naughton — has experienced a variety of parenting styles between both her mom and dad.

“We’re different on typical man-woman stuff. He picks her up and plays with her, and I’m like, ‘Be careful!’ ” Naughton says. “I’m a lot more sensitive. I’m such a girl and I’m like, ‘Just don’t do anything because I don’t want anything to happen.’ I think we’re pretty good, though. We’ve found a balance.”

And her favorite part of motherhood so far? “Learning more about my daughter every day,” says the actress. “That’s one of the best parts: just learning and exploring her, and just enjoying the process of figuring out every stage.”

Inside George and Amal Clooney’s ‘Very Happy’ Italian Summer with the Twins

George and Amal Clooney’s summer vacation in Italy has all the familiar hallmarks of their go-to July getaways: sun-kissed downtime at their villa on Lake Como and laughter-filled pasta dinners with friends.

This time, however, there are two newcomers on the la dolce vita scene: Ella and Alexander, the couple’s 7-week-old twins. And the new parents are relishing every moment.

“George and Amal are very hands-on,” a source tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue. “The babies keep them very busy, but they both seem to love being parents.”

“The weather has been fantastic — sunny and warm every day,” the source adds. “George and Amal are enjoying the summer with their babies. Both seem very happy.”

While they spend most of their time at the villa with the twins, who were born in London on June 6, and visiting pals — including George’s longtime friend, producer Ben Weiss — the Clooneys have enjoyed a few low-key date nights.

The two “sat close and cuddled” over a candlelit dinner on July 18 at the Grill in the Villa d’Este Hotel, an onlooker tells PEOPLE.

“George had his arm around Amal for most of the dinner,” the onlooker adds. “They were both in the best mood.”

Of course, there’s no late-night carousing these days. “On the rare occasion they leave to have dinner, they don’t stay out late,” says a source. “It’s like they enjoy having a night out with friends, but the babies are still the main priority.”

After dining at Il Gatto Nero, a favorite local spot, on July 11, the Clooneys made sure to call it an early night. “In the past they always dined for hours,” says a source.

“This time it was obvious they didn’t want to be out too late.”

Inside Serial Killer Son of Sam’s Life Now: How He’s Been Born-Again as ‘Son of Hope’ and Doesn’t Want to Leave Prison

In the years since his arrest ended a reign of terror over New York City that peaked in the summer of 1977, David Berkowitz — the serial killer known as the “Son of Sam” — has rechristened himself the “Son of Hope,” claiming he’s a born-again Christian who wants to remain behind bars, according to his visitors in prison.

The redemptive identity is an attempt to replace the menacing one that Berkowitz, now 64, adopted in taunting letters written to police and a newspaper columnist during a deadly rampage that gripped the city in fear 40 years ago.

His 13-month shooting spree, which killed six people and wounded seven others, will be revisited in the Investigation Discovery documentary Son of Sam: The Hunt for a Killer, premiering Aug. 5 and exclusively previewed in a clip above.

Serving six consecutive terms of 25 years-to-life since pleading guilty to murder in May 1978, Berkowitz “has to wake up every day and remember what he did to innocent people,” minister Roxanne Tauriello, who is a regular visitor to him in prison, tells PEOPLE.

“David grieves over that a lot, and you can’t say to him — you never want to say ‘Son of Sam’ in front of him,” Tauriello says. “He never uses that name, ever.”

“He is genuinely sorrowful and does not want to get out of prison,” she says. “He knows he deserved to die and deserves to be exactly where he is.”

• For more on the Son of Sam case then and now, subscribe now to PEOPLE or pick up this week’s issue, on newsstands Friday.

Berkowitz’s shootings began on July 29, 1976, when he opened fire on two young women parked outside a Bronx apartment, instantly killing one of them, 18-year-old Donna Lauria. Investigators eventually linked his attacks — several of which targeted couples parked in dimly lit lovers’ lanes — by the .44-caliber handgun he used in all of them.

The cat-and-mouse game he played with police escalated after a shooting the next year, on April 17, 1977, when Berkowitz first called himself the “Son of Sam” in a letter left behind for authorities.

The next month, on May 30, another letter from the killer delivered to then-New York Daily News columnist Jimmy Breslin fed the growing panic.

“He is very aware of the public’s fear and incredible fascination with him,” says criminologist Scott Bonn, who interviewed Berkowitz in prison in 2013 for his book Why We Love Serial Killers: The Curious Appeal of the World’s Most Savage Murderers.

“He is a gnome-looking, bald, chubby guy with red cheeks, and he comes bouncing in to meet you,” Bonn tells PEOPLE. “He is quite different from the sullen ‘Son of Sam’ from the ’70s.”

After his capture, Berkowitz’s claims that he’d been ordered to kill by a demon (through a barking dog) initially led him to be judged mentally unfit. After that ruling was reversed and he was ordered to face charges, Berkowitz avoided a trial by pleading guilty.

In 1987, Bonn says, Berkowitz “reached a bottoming-out in prison. He didn’t want to live anymore and contemplated suicide.” But Berkowitz told Bonn that God forgave him after a dark night of despair, and he says he found religion that same year.

“He claims to be a born-again Christian,” Bonn says. Called “Brother Dave” by other inmates, Berkowitz now participates in an online ministry that is operated for him by evangelical Christians.

“He gets thousands of hits for that site because he is an interesting character,” Bonn says.

Adds minister Tauriello: “I cannot reconcile his deeds with the person I know today. It is hard to believe that at one time he was so wicked, so evil, so violent.”

In an interview with ID, however, retired N.Y.C. police Capt. Joe Borrelli wasn’t sold on Berkowitz’s conversion, saying, “It doesn’t make up for all those young women that he killed.”

“He is not putting on a façade, and he is not doing anything to get out of prison,” Tauriello says, noting that “years ago he wrote a letter to Gov. Pataki stating he does not want to come out.”

“He told me in conversations that he deserved to die, that he should have died, but at that time in New York, they did not have the death penalty,” she says. “He destroyed the lives of his victims, the parents of his victims and those that survived, who have to live with the fear of that.”

Now, according to Tauriello, Berkowitz says “one of his goals is to warn young people on the road to destruction. One of his ministries is to reach out to young people to show them the consequences of actions.”

Experience Matters: Inside the Mind of Enfants Riches Déprimés Founder Henry Levy

It’s a little bit of streetwear, skate, punk, new wave and contemporary art set amid half trashy pawn shop and half art gallery that’s overtaken Maxfield.
Los Angeles brand Enfants Riches Déprimés is next in line for Maxfield’s pop-up series when it opens the doors to its temporary stand-alone space located across from the boutique retailer’s main store on Melrose Avenue.
The temporary shop will have a three-week run selling a limited-edition shoe collaboration with Vans, archival pieces, toys, banners, art and the introduction of Enfants Riches Déprimés furniture, all born out of the mind of founder and sole designer Henry Levy, who sometimes goes by Henri Alexander.
The idea was to create an exterior similar to a pawn shop, complete with fake infomercials created by Levy playing in the store windows. The building’s facade was painted a bright yellow Levy called “obnoxious” amid the street’s more conventional building exteriors. Inside is a bit of a different story with white walls and a gallerylike backdrop for the clothes.

Rosario Dawson Opens Up About Finding Cousin Dead Inside Her Home

Rosario Dawson is breaking her silence on her cousin’s death weeks after discovering the 26-year-old’s body.

Earlier this month, the actress found Vaneza Ines Vasquez unresponsive inside her Los Angeles home. Vasquez was later transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead shortly after. Early autopsy results suggested Dawson’s cousin died due to natural causes. Vasquez, who was working for Dawson at the time of her death, was also reportedly experiencing migraines and hypertension.

“My cousin just died, Vaneza [Ines Vazquez], and I’m coming up on the 6-year anniversary of my grandmother’s passing,” Rosario told Build Series on Wednesday in a conversation about her work with The Lower Eastside Girls Club of New York. “And from 75 to 26, you just don’t know when your time is. I just don’t want to be in any kind of position where I’m looking back going, ‘Ah, I should’ve, could’ve, would’ve, didn’t, damn!’”

In the week’s following her cousin’s death, Dawson has pledged not to take things for granted, reevaluating her priorities and finding comfort in her family.

“Tomorrow is not guaranteed, and you want to make sure the people that you love know that, and that you’re doing things with your time that you’re proud of, because it goes by so fast. It gets really easy to get caught up in the minutiae,” she said.

“I’ve been dealing with a lot of loss lately and reconnecting with my family and my friends in a different way,” she continued. “I’m realizing how much I’ve pulled myself back, and I’ve been just really humbled by this opportunity tonight.”

Later in the evening, Dawson was honored for her work at The Lower Eastside Girls Club, which provides a safe and enriching space for girls from low-income families. The actress is a founding board member and grew up in the same neighborhood the Girls Club operates in.

360-Degree Photographs Invite You Inside America’s Most Majestic Libraries

Whether or not you consider yourself an avid reader, there is something undeniably magical about entering a library. Perhaps it’s the cloak of silence blanketing the space, which amplifies the sound of every flipping page and muffled whisper. Maybe it’s the majestic architecture that transforms the public spaces into literary temples, or the subconscious feeling that an infinite wealth of knowledge is at your fingertips.

If perchance you are not in the immediate vicinity of a hall of books, worry not; Thomas R. Schiff will bring the library to you. The photographer’s series “The Library Exhibition” features a selection of 360-degree, panoramic photographs that mimic the feeling of entering an expansive library space. And the best part is, there’s no library card necessary.

Schiff, who has previously photographed modernist homes and cathedral ceilings with the same panoramic style, captured the image of 38 libraries around the country, from Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello library to the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale. Because Schiff captures the spaces before the libraries open to the public, few people are seen roaming the book-laden halls, allowing the eye to focus on the myriad architectural details and structural differences.

The photographs come together to show the history of the library in America, a space traditionally designated for community and learning. There have been, however, significant changes to the library model over time. For example, prior to the late 18th century, libraries were spaces reserved for the elites; not until Benjamin Franklin opened the first American lending library in 1790 were the spaces open to the public.

Are such ideological shifts evident in the buildings’ stained-glass windows, winding staircases, and looming chandeliers? Take a brief tour through Schiff’s favorite libraries and come to your own conclusion.

Thomas R. Schiff’s “The Library Exhibition” is on view from March 15 until April 20 at Aperture Gallery, New York.

Inside The School Where Children With HIV Find Refuge From Discrimination In China

Kun Kun, a young boy living with HIV, was banished from his village in China last year by residents who described him as a “ticking time bomb.” The case drew international attention to the severe discrimination faced by children with HIV in China.

Kun Kun has since found a new home, at the Green Harbor Red-Ribbon School in Linfen, China. The boarding school is a rare refuge for HIV-positive children in China, where infection rates are relatively low, but social stigma is high.

The school is the subject of an ambitious documentary project called “Children of the Harbor,” which is following the students’ passage through the boarding school until the first class graduates in 2017.

The project was conceived by Bryan Anker, a 27-year-old medical student originally from Los Angeles, who lived at the Green Harbor school in 2012 during an internship at the affiliated hospital.

“It broke my heart to learn that these children had been shunned by society all of their lives,” Anker told The WorldPost by email. ”The level of awareness these children possess is mind-boggling. They fully comprehend their current situation and are well aware of how society perceives them.”

Anker and his small team of filmmakers, including Myanmar-based photographer, journalist and cinematographer Ann Wang, started to document the students’ lives in December and plan to follow their stories through graduation. “We want to film up to this point and see what road the students take after graduation. Will they go to university? Will they return home? Will they find a job?” Anker said.

“These children are smart and resilient, and some of them have thought up intricate plans for escaping the HIV stigma in China,” he told The WorldPost.

The school was set up in 2006, and is home to around 30 children and teenagers with HIV, ranging in age from 6 years old to 19.  The students have “very complicated feelings … about themselves, about the school and about the disease they’ve been carrying since birth,” Wang told The WorldPost by email.

Many of them are the children of patients being treated for HIV/AIDS at the affiliated Linfen Infectious Disease Hospital; others have been orphaned by AIDS or thrown out of their schools and local communities due to stigma.

This is a pervasive problem for children with HIV in China. “If their HIV status has been disclosed, it’s very common that parents of other children complain to the school and force the school to separate their children from HIV positive children,” Xu Wenqing, an HIV/AIDS specialist at UNICEF China, told The WorldPost by email.

Nearly 10,000 children in China live with HIV/AIDS, among some 500,000 reported cases in the country. (Experts estimate the total number of cases, including those undiagnosed, may be around 800,000.) This is relatively low compared to countries like the U.S., which has a population a quarter of the size of China’s, and an estimated 1.2 million HIV/AIDS cases among people 13 or older.

Yet discrimination is widespread, and affects old and young alike in China. Advocates say people known to be HIV-positive are often barred from attending collge or refused public and private-sector jobs. The main problem is a lack of information about HIV/AIDS, including how it is transmitted and treated. Experts point to China’s poor sexual health education and the ongoing repetition of myths about HIV by public officials.

China’s leaders have made a high-profile effort to combat this prejudice in recent years, as well as stepping up free treatment for AIDS patients and measures to prevent mothers from passing on HIV to their newborn children. In 2006, a new law banned discrimination against people living with HIV, although it has been difficult to enforce. On World AIDS Day last year, China’s first lady Peng Liyuan released a music video with the students of Green Harbor-Red Ribbon School, urging an end to the stigma they face.

Anker hopes that telling the stories of the children at Green Harbor can convince more people to leave their prejudices behind.

“I believe the children’s stories are so poignant, and their personalities so radiant, that our viewers won’t have any choice but to empathize with their situation,” he said.

To learn more about the media project and support the documentary, go to the Children of the Harbor website.

First Nighter: Sherie René Scott’s “Whorl Inside a Loop,” Ken Regan’s “Sense of an Ending,” Anna Ziegler’s “A Delicate Ship”

Not too long ago and for reasons not entirely altruistic, Broadway and off-Broadway veteran Sherie René Scott (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Everyday Rapture) taught a 12-week prison course named–not by her–“Theatricalizing the Personal Narrative.”

For someone who likes putting her life on stage (for instance, the above-mentioned Everyday Rapture, co-written with Dick Scanlan), the assignment gives the impression of being ideal for yet again theatricalizing her own personal narrative. While she doesn’t appear to have had that in mind when she began working with this inmate group, she nevertheless has done so touchingly and enlighteningly with Whorl Inside a Loop, again co-authoring with Scanlan, in a Second Stage production.

Directed by Michael Mayer and Scanlan in a manner alternating between gritty and grinning, Scott and Scanlan have adapted her story and included her interplay with prisoners — all of these found guilty of murder, one of them innocent of the crime. The playwrights also devote time to Scott’s dealings with members of the prison staff and exchanges with family, friends (notably a doubting husband called Noah) and a potential producer.

While there are times when it feels as if Scott and Scanlan may have tweaked what really happened — not necessarily to protect, say, the guilty — most of the 100 intermissionless minutes have the clarion ring of verisimilitude. In particular, a spectator might expect that among the convicted killers with whom Scott comes into contact over the 12 visits, at least one would pose some degree of menace. When that never happens, it initially seems as if Scott has to be glossing over the truth of her experience.

Okay, when one of the men — all of them African-American — reenacts his murder, there is a tense moment, but it’s quickly defused. Still, in the long run the lack of anything disturbing comes across as hewing closer to the truth than inserting volatility simply because it’s expected might be. Incidentally, as benign as the men are within the walls — which for this purpose have been stripped by designers Christine Jones and Brett Banakis to Second Stage architect Rem Koolhaas’s bared look — there is one, remaining identified, who, the men agree, must never be allowed out.

That over time Scott becomes friendlier and more at ease with the six men in the class as they deliver the narratives they’ve prepared appears to be quite natural. She’s both surprised and gratified that the men are so forthcoming and articulate when describing either incidents that put them where they are or when detailing other chapters in their lives.

There is one narrative that at its finish earned applause during the press preview I attended. Jeffrey (Chris Meyers), who didn’t commit the crime for which he took the fall, talks about himself with such pathos that only the hardest heart would stay unmoved. His — confession is the wrong word — his explanation is so irrefutably convincing that Scott asks the obvious question: If everyone knows he shouldn’t be behind bars, why is he? She gets her answer, and it’s not a consoling one.

The other prisoners, who boast names like Sunnyside, Flex, Bey, Source and Rick are played with great vigor by, respectively, Derrick Baskin, Daniel J. Watts, Donald Webber Jr., Ryan Quinn and Nicholas Christopher. They all double as prison staffers — one is the man assigned to check Scott for any metal she might be carrying. She is: the wire in her bra, and it causes him consternation.

In addition to Noah, among those impersonated are Scott’s producer Tammy and her gay hairdresser. One of his clients is Hillary Rodham Clinton, who one day has an appointment immediately following Scott’s — an appointment leading to developments potentially meaningful for the inmates. (There’s no speculation here whether the current Presidential candidate’s chances will rise or fall on her agreeing to attend a performance the inmates give in the prison gym, but she does want to drop by with the intent of considering prison reform.)

In case anyone deciding whether to see Whirl Inside a Loop (the title refers to fingerprints, of course) is wondering about Scott’s exploiting the prisoners’ histories, the issue is raised and has apparently been resolved satisfactorily. The program credits “additional material” to, alphabetically, Andre Kelley, Marvin Lewis, Felix Machado, Richard Norat and Jeffrey Rivera. Farther back in the program, the title of each man’s narrative is listed.

During Scott’s three-month course, one of the men has applied a fourth time for parole. As the Whorl Inside a Loop ending approaches, he receives his letter. What it discloses won’t be, er, disclosed here, but it’s a beauty of a blackout.

******************

It’s March 31, 1999 in Ken Urban’s Sense of an Ending, and Charles (Joshua David Robinson), a New York Times reporter in trouble for plagiarism, is hoping to clear his name by getting to the bottom of a breaking Rwandan story. Sister Justina (Heather Alicia Simms) and Sister Alice (Dana Marie Ingraham) have been charged with contributing to a Tutsi massacre in a local cathedral and are about to be transported to Berlin for trial.

Charles is being looked after by soldier Paul (Hubert Pont-Du Jour), whose motives regarding the nuns’ innocence or guilt is unclear. Nevertheless, Charles persists at getting Sister Justina and Sister Alice to tell their histories and by the interviews, even when the nuns are cagey around each other, reiterate their innocence. That’s the report Charles knows his NYT editor, Kendra, wants and expects. He’s also hoping to interview Dusabi (Danyon Davis), a Tutsi who, with his now deceased wife Elizabeth, survived the slaying and is the only witness to the murder and burning of the several hundred men, women and children who’d sought shelter in the church.

Sense of an Ending, compactly directed by Adam Fitzgerald and compellingly acted, at 59E59, is a look back at fading headlines concerning the Hutus revenge on the Tutsis once the long repressed Hutus were in the position to dominate their former suppressers. It’s a potent view of man’s and woman’s inhumanity to man and woman.

In the small space where Sense of an Ending is unfolding the dominant piece set designer David L. Arsenault provides is the cathedral’s large double door, each door featuring a relatively small cut-out of a cross. Behind the doors is supposedly what remains of the carnage. The door opens only at the denouement. What’s revealed is stunning, but, needless to say, will not be described here.
****************
Sarah (Miriam Silverman) and Sam (Matt Dellapina) — newly in love and smooching when not mooting the benefits of suffering as a prescription for self-understanding — are interrupted by an insistent knock on the door to the comfortable Manhattan living room Reid Thompson has designed for her to call home.

Not expecting more company, Sarah reluctantly goes to see who’s there. In bursts Nate (Nick Westrate), Sarah’s best friend from when they grew up in the same building. His arrival is a Big Uh-oh, and occurs only after the three characters have had a few fourth-wall-breaking words with the audience. Their addressing the patrons continues throughout A Delicate Ship, Anna Ziegler’s long-at-80-minutes play, directed by Margot Bordelon for The Playwrights Realm, at Playwright’s Horizons.

The difficulty with the piece is that — as played and directed but maybe not as written — Nate’s high-energy, even menacing, presence signals just about everything that will dismayingly affect the incipient Sarah-Sam romance. No surprise mitigates the predictable plotting as Nate begins assailing Sam and increasingly declares himself the man who’s loved Sarah from second grade, just as, he maintains, she loves him.

Anyone aware of Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? or maybe even 1965’s on-screen Darling knows that introducing a party game is trouble, and that’s just what Nate does here. It also doesn’t help that Ziegler has indulged herself in much questionable poetic writing. “Our lives are love songs to our parents,” Sarah proclaims at one point, and if the line strikes you as delectable, then maybe A Delicate Ship is for you.

Actors Silverman and Dellapina, who plays guitar and sings nicely along the way, perform well together, and Westrate has some effective stretches. If on arrival he were to play Nate as less immediately psychotic, Ziegler’s script might have a more insinuating dramatic arc.

So there you have it: another play where an intruder hangs around longer than anyone would be allowed to linger in real life.

A Look Inside Banksy’s ‘Dismaland,’ The Bleakest Amusement Park Ever

It’s Disneyland, wrapped in a nightmare.

On Thursday, images and video captured inside “Dismaland,” Banksy’s new art exhibition/dystopian amusement park, began making the rounds on social media. They offer a glimpse into a world that’s predictably dark, bizarre and full of satire.

There’s a statue of Little Mermaid, looking oddly distorted, and a sculpture of Cinderella’s carriage overturned in an accident. The Grim Reaper can be spotted riding in a bumper car, and a killer whale is seen jumping out of a toilet bowl, among other installments.

In an interview with the BBC, Banksy described the so-called “bemusement park” – which also features work from Damien Hirst, Jenny Holzer, Jimmy Cauty and other artists — as a “family theme park unsuitable for children.”

He added that the show, his biggest to date, will require plenty of “audience participation.”

“A dead princess is only complete when surrounded by gawping crowds with their cameras out, or the opportunity to photograph yourself pulling an amazed expression when a killer whale leaps from a toilet,” the enigmatic artist said.

(Story continues below)

Dismaland will be open to the public from August 22 to September 27 in Weston-super-Mare, a seaside town in Somerset, England.

The show is taking place on the site of a former leisure park called Tropicana. The now-derelict building and grounds on the Tropicana site have been closed for 15 years, reports the BBC.

Pixar Fails At Body Positivity in ‘Inside, Out’

I have five kids. Like, for real. Five of them. We don’t go to the movies as much now that my bigger kids are so BIG (seriously, one of them is 6’1″), and the little ones have pretty much zero interest in movies. We have a TV (we aren’t that weird), but we don’t watch it much. That said, I’m sort of out of the loop when it comes to pop culture. I’ve only read about the new Pixar movie. I had no plans on seeing it, really, but now that I’ve read about it and a had a friend confirm my suspicions, I will for sure not ever be seeing it.

No.

Like any good feminist, I object to parts of Snow White (um, Prince rescuing her with a kiss? No). And The Little Mermaid (uh, have fins? Switch for legs? For a man? No). And like any good body-positivity activist, I question why I can’t even take my kids to a movie, for flip’s sake (not that I would, but we’re speaking hypothetically here) without a collective sigh and a real, genuine head shake/eye roll.

I can’t write with any real authority about Inside Out, because I haven’t see the movie, but I’m pretty much 100% positive that seeing the movie isn’t required to make this judgment. Because here’s the thing about movies: They are made of pictures. And visual memory is most reliable than auditory or tactile. That’s right, folks, we remember what we see.

Just take a minute to think about the implications of that.

And what are we seeing, exactly?

Well, the movie is a look inside the mind of an 11-year-old girl named Riley. I’m not sure what we’d expect to see in there, aside from One Direction and the remnants of some forsaken Barbies that now find themselves stored under the bed. Pixar wants us to see in Riley’s mind, and that’s clever. Cute, even.

Except here’s the problem: What’s apparently in Riley’s mind is a tall, lithe, human-looking girl with a pixie cut named Joy, obviously. Her counterpoint is a short, chunky, sad-and-blue… person (I presume) with an emo haircut, named — you guessed it — Sad.

Sad (the feeling) is often associated with the color blue. Red is often associated with anger, etc. That I get. I don’t get how that happened, and I’m not going to go searching because it’s not that important to my point. Blue is also associated with boys. Which also makes no sense. At all.

Color aside… why is she short? Why does she have emo hair? Why is she wearing glasses? Why does she have to wear a turtleneck? Why is she fat, for frack’s sake?

In fact, why have any of these characteristics been assigned to her?

Well. Probably because someone at Pixar thinks fat people are sad. Because they are fat. And how could they be fat and smile? Fat people have some nerve. Also, their poor vision is apparently causing them some distress. Joy doesn’t wear glasses. She probably had Lasik. Because she is probably also rich. Rich, white (well, white-ish) people are also joyous. And she gets to wear a cute little dress, which she probably bought at Nordstrom, while Sad is shrouded in what is probably an itchy-ass thrifted wool sweater. Maybe that’s why she’s named Sad.

I don’t even like turtlenecks.

Don’t get all “Oh, she’s a grouchy fat lady,” on me. This is real.

All of this makes me sad. Just when I think we are starting to get it — there’s an African-American lead female protagonist in a Disney movie, Rapunzel takes care of herself, Elsa is a general badass — something like this happens. And it’s like Pixar didn’t even know.

People of Pixar, can we stop stereotyping? Now? Thanks.

I wish it were that simple. The fact that someone who works for a major production company — in fact, probably many people that work for that company — cannot even see how this is problematic, is just… I don’t even know. Upsetting. Marginalizing. Saddening. Disturbing. And the fact that most of us will see the movie and think, Aw, what a cute little movie, well, it says something about us, our culture, and what we’ve been conditioned to think for so long that it isn’t even something we’d question.

Children are tiny, impressionable sponges. And small children, presumably the movie’s target audience, are the most impressionable. Ours don’t watch commercial TV for this reason. Have you ever really paid attention to commercials? Carl’s Jr. is using sex to sell hamburgers, for crap’s sake.

Children simply cannot discern things that are nuanced. They don’t have the capacity in their tiny brains to say, “Hey Pixar. You are being a bunch of jerks.” They see the character Sad — blue, fat, glasses on her chunky emo face — and guess what? That’s sad. You just literally defined sad for my 4-year-old. THANKS A LOT.

Meanwhile her mother (me) is writing and talking and practically screaming about body image and fat acceptance. Pixar, you are undermining me. I expect more.

We can watch a movie and just watch it, or we can watch a movie and really think about what it’s saying. And then we can ask — ourselves, and the movie maker and each other — what is going on here? And then hopefully we can talk about how we need to do better, for ourselves, and for our babies who are watching.

Movie Review: Inside Out…Convoluted

After repressing several urges to walk out during the screening of Inside Out, I stayed until the conclusion. Alas, this is an overrated film directed by Pete Docter and Ronnie del Carmen that is confusing. It is also childish and, yet, too complex for children. For adults, it is a drag. Yes, it is a clever thought, but it is not executed with a matching expertise. We all know we have a range of emotions and they are at war each other daily. But the animation of these emotions is subpar for Pixar. Up created by Pixar had a spectacular story line and the animation of the characters was stellar. The animation of the parents of Inside Out’s Riley, our star, is up to snuff, but the emotions of Joy, (Amy Poehler) Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling), Sadness (Phyllis Smith) are not clever to look at. They are not up to Pixar’s ability to create inventive animated characters.

The story line is that these emotions live in Headquarters, the control center inside Riley’s mind. The play on words as in “head” “quarters” is as silly as is this film. Throughout the day these emotions speak to Riley and interact. Riley is at a crisis in her young life as her father has uprooted her from her Midwest life to live in San Francisco where he has a new job. As Riley struggles to adjust to her new life, chaos ensues in Headquarters. Alas chaos ensues in the plot which becomes chaotic without much reason. Chaos is not plot as my former mentor Norman Mailer would preach, but Pixar seems to have created a movie that should be called Chaos, instead of Inside Out. Oh, it is charming how Riley faces the new activities at school, the trials of moving into a home before the furniture arrives, and trying to fit in with her new classmates. But the story line was not enough for me. And as I struggled inside my being with should I or shouldn’t I leave the theatre, I identified with the turmoil Riley was experiencing in her head, her headquarters. And while Sadness ends up being the emotional star of this movie, I did experience this emotion because I stayed until the end of this film and sadly left the theatre.

What Disney Pixar’s ‘Inside Out’ Film Teaches Us About Embracing All Sides Of Our Emotions

Disney Pixar’s new “emotion” picture, Inside Out is not only another endearing creative masterpiece, it also teaches us some important lessons on the nature of our emotions.

It turns out that our unique tapestry of emotional responses — whether
joy, anger, curiosity, disgust, surprise, sadness, fear, shame or guilt — all serve a distinctive purpose. Even though we might like to eliminate unfavorable emotions, they serve an important role.

The American Psychological Association defines emotion as a “complex feeling state”, impacting nearly all facets of our lives. Our responses are influenced by what we perceive to be “personally significant”. We experience emotions in a wide variety of ways, according to what stage of life we are in, our unique temperament, and how we view ourselves- and the situations we find ourselves in.

2015-06-21-1434849227-4515170-EmotionsandBrain.jpg

Inside Out, while appealing largely to a younger audience, offers sound wisdom we can apply to make sense of our emotions-both at work and at home:

1. Feelings add color to our lives. Life would be boring if our emotions were flat lined. We’d lack passion and zest. The wide range of emotions we are capable of experiencing contribute to our human experience and essence — our personality, mood, behavior and motivation. Yes, emotions can be raw, messy and visceral — but they can also be profound, beautiful, and comforting. They all add dimension and flavor.

2. We don’t always have to think positive. It’s unrealistic to think that we are always going to put an instant positive spin on things. Very often, we may need to buy time to regroup and work through complex emotions. Our tendency to want a quick fix can help us look for solutions, but it can also be a trap that makes us fight ourselves when we think we “should” have already gotten past something and instead find ourselves needing time to regroup and put the pieces together.

3. Emotional contrasts are important. When we’ve experienced difficult emotions, it can help us appreciate the good moments all the more. If we never had to endure rainy days and seasons, we’d have less appreciation for sunny ones once they arrive. In a similar way, it’s what makes us enjoy a break after a long and intensive work period.

4. Emotional states aren’t permanent. Even though we might think we’re forever stuck — feeling states, like weather patterns, are temporary. The winds of change are inevitable. Knowing this can help us learn to appreciate and anchor down the positive moments and ride out the ones that clobber us and bring us to our knees.

2015-06-21-1434849297-2192498-RAINBOW.jpg

5. Difficult emotions can protect us. If given the choice to completely squash feelings like sadness, rage and disgust, our first tendency might be to instantly jump at the chance. This could be detrimental, since our emotions provide us with all sorts of important information. Our fears or apprehensions often serve us well and prevent us from living with reckless abandon.

6. Emotions reflect our deeper values and desires. Feelings reflect what we care about. In the film, Riley, the main character, grappled with difficult emotions associated with her family moving across the country. Her happy memories of childhood were hard to let go of, bringing about great sorrow and frustration. When we’re immersed in sadness or anger during life’s changes, it reflects our desire for closeness, connection, and contentment.

7. All emotions can be catalysts towards growth. When we meet a goal or experience success, the energy propels us to keep striving. When we make a mistake, or have setbacks, even though it can be a tough pill to swallow, the emotions generated can prompt us to take action towards improvement.

Inside Out provides a poignant reminder that when our emotional responses are strong in one area-whether joy or sorrow, we can’t magically switch gears. We also learn that these emotions are intricately connected, and you can’t have one without the other.

We are inevitably going to have powerful responses to our life circumstances. It takes time and effort to sort out our complex emotions and come to terms with change, loss and stressors. We can’t force ourselves to feel a certain way at a given moment, but knowing this can help us remember to make the joyful moments count and recognize that the more unsettling ones can also be useful.
