SHOPPING NEWS UPDATE:

The Internet Lost It When Beyoncé Dropped That Twins Photo

The first photo of Beyoncé and JAY-Z‘s twins dropped in the early hours of Friday morning. And as expected, the Bey Hive swarmed the Internet with glee.

“Sir Carter and Rumi 1 month today,” the songstress, 35, captioned an image on Instagram – holding the tiny tots while wearing a Palomo Spain ensemble in a shot that evoked the same themes as the stunning maternity photo she and her rapper husband used for their double baby announcement in February.

Besides it being their first public photo, Beyoncé’s post was also the first time the names of her twins were officially confirmed. In June, trademark documents for the twins’ names had been filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Want all the latest pregnancy and birth announcements, plus celebrity mom blogs? Click here to get those and more in the PEOPLE Babies newsletter.

Of course, Beyoncé’s fans were not ready for the surprise.

Discovering the pics early in the morning on Friday meant some were going to be late for work.

Or not do any work at all.

But they had to spend some time analyzing everything about the shot — even if Bey’s flawlessness meant questioning their own abilities.

Fans were shook.

One even changed her mind about starting a family of her own one day.

And the photo’s already reached legendary status.

Mostly, though, people came to just bow down to their queen.

Beyoncé’s family also got in on the conversation, wishing Bey the best.

“So happy my baby shared a photo of her babies with the world,” mom Tina Knowles wrote on Instagram Friday morning. “Proud grandma. Hello Sir Carter and Rumi Carter. Boy and girl what a blessing.”

“Beautiful!” added Matthew Knowles on Twitter. “#ProudDad #ProudGrandDad #Beyonce.”

In addition to Rumi and Sir Carter, the Carter family also includes big sister Blue Ivy, 5. The family of five are currently settled in to their $ 400,000-a-month Malibu rental.

Minute before dropping the picture, Beyoncé joined JAY-Z for a super low-key appearance at a Los Angeles event celebrating Roc Nation artist Vic Mensa. The paired looked happy and relaxed and not at all like exhausted new parents who’d welcomed two new members to their family a month prior.

The Babadook Is Apparently Now A Gay Icon And The Internet Is Losing Its Mind Over It

We’re babashook!

The titular bad guy from the 2014 horror movie “The Babadook” has suddenly become a gay icon and the internet can’t get enough of his delightfully evil homosexual ways.

Vulture believes the hilariously puzzling phenomenon can originally be traced back to a Tumblr post from October 2016:

Buzzfeed reported that the craze began in the summer of 2016 when the film was mistakenly listed in the LGBT section of Netflix:

Teen Vogue claims that the image was actually edited and notes that while the newly out boogeyman-like character first became a sensation months ago on Tumblr, it wasn’t until earlier this month that it really began to take off in tandem with LGBTQ Pride celebrations.

No matter what the real backstory is, one thing is certain: people just can’t get enough of gay Babadook.

A post shared by Mikey Pop (@djmikeypop) on

We’re still not really sure how or why this happened but we don’t really care. We’re just happy to have The Babadook as part of the family.

Self-Absorbed Best Man Hijacks Wedding And The Internet Is Appalled

The Internet is straight-up livid about this egregious wedding etiquette offense, and you will be too.

A recent bride wrote in to Slate’s advice columnist Dear Prudence (a.k.a. Mallory Ortberg) about “John” ― her husband’s best friend, best man, and wedding officiant ― who had the audacity to propose to his longtime girlfriend and announce their pregnancy DURING the ceremony.

On top of that, “John” ― not his real name ― found other ways to make the rest of the day about him and his fiancée “Jane.” The bride explained:

I couldn’t even hear the vows my husband wrote or the rest of the ceremony over the noise of Jane’s happy sobs, her very surprised family who were also guests, and people seated nearby congratulating her. Even the videographer cut to her frequently during the ceremony, and you can’t hear anything over the chatter. When John gave his toast, he apologized for being caught up in the moment, and then proceeded to talk about he and Jane’s future with nary a mention of us. During the reception John and Jane became the primary focus of our guests. John even went out of his way to ask the band for a special dance for just him and Jane on the dance floor.

The bride added that though she has never considered herself an “attention hog,” she still found herself irate weeks after the wedding.

My husband hasn’t spoken to John since the wedding, and our mutual friends think what he did was rude but that my husband should just get over it. My husband has joked that he’ll resume his friendship when John and Jane give him a $ 40,000 check for “their half of the wedding.” Do you think John’s behavior warrants the end of a long-term friendship, or are we angry over nothing?

Prudence was firmly on the couple’s side, but didn’t think it was worth throwing away a long-term friendship without at least having a conversation with John first. (You can read the question and answer in full over on Slate). Prudence wrote:

I think it merits a fight! In between “getting over it” and “never speaking to John again” is the happy medium of “having a difficult conversation with a longtime friend who did something selfish and self-absorbed on your wedding day.” He’s your husband’s best friend, so your husband should tell John just how upset his behavior during your wedding made him.

Twitter also came out in support of the bride and groom:

We, too, are shook and couldn’t agree more. Tell us where you stand in the comments.

London attack: Politicians v the internet

All the Celebs Who Have Animal Doppelgangers, According to the Internet

Politicians. Dramatic actors. Broadcast journalists. Musicians. Entrepreneurs.

None of the above are known for having an especially great sense of humor. Fortunately, Mother Nature — and the Internet — have other ideas.

Is there anything funnier (or sillier) than a famous person embracing his or her animal lookalike? We think not. Check out some of the most delightful celebrity-furball doppëlgangers the World Wide Web has to offer.

Joe Biden Puppy

When Joe Biden met … Joe Biden? Netizens went nuts for this adorable photo-op of a 4-month-old golden retriever named after the former vice president posing with his namesake. “As soon as I told him his name was Biden, he started kissing the dog, which is like exactly what I expected Biden would do,” Sydney, the pup’s owner, said.

2. Adam Driver Cat

Eagle-eyed (or shall we say cat-eyed?) Time Inc. editor Marci Robin noticed a striking resemblance between this Monmouth County SPCA kitty and Kylo Ren himself, a.k.a. Star Wars actor (or Girls actor, your choice) Adam Driver. Throngs of fans online concurred; “Adam Driver Cat” became a sensation and was adopted soon thereafter.

3. Nicki Minaj Meets Melon Cat (or Limecat)

We believe this image speaks for itself, but should clarify that the infamous cat meme’s fruit-helmet is neither a melon nor a lime, but is (most likely) a pomelo.

4. John Travolta Dog

Those eyes. That jaw. The ever-amiable grin. This uniquely familiar-faced shelter pup and the Pulp Fiction star share a name, as well as some striking bone structure.

5. Anderson Cooper Cat

Of the stunning white-furred feline, the silver fox himself purred, “It does sort of look like me … I don’t know who you are, or where you’re from, or whether you were heretofore unaware of my steely blue eyes, but you and I have nothing in common. I mean yes, I once peed on the floor, but who hasn’t in Wolf Blitzer’s billiard room?” Oh, Anderson.

6. Samuel L. Jackson Dog

While John Travolta dog opines about Parisian burgers (“They call it a royale with cheese”), Samuel L. Dogson is more likely to let loose a string of righteous, expletive-laced Biblical verses (“There’s a passage I got memorized. Ezekiel 25:17…”). All Pulp Fiction references aside, the Reddit community discovered this priceless dog mug back in 2013 and the Internet’s been barking about it ever since.

7. Taylor Lautner Alpaca

Cute and fuzzy, with deep-set brooding eyes and a seductive pout … we’re talking about the alpaca not the Twilight star, duh. You’d have to “twi-hard” to resist this pair of adorable twins.

8. Eliza Dushku Dog

Well, this is a first. The Buffy the Vampire Slayer actress actually invented this canine comparison herself — and more than 12K fans agreed.

9. David Schwimmer Cat (a.k.a. Ross Geller Cat)

The catty comparison was uncanny. And no, we’re not talking about Schwimmer’s turn as lawyer and celebrity patriarch Robert Kardashian. It started with one simple tweet, but snowballed into a full-on feline celebration of the beloved/beleaguered Friends character.

10. Patrick Stewart Dog

Just when we thought these celebrity doppëlgangers couldn’t get any more adorable, along came this tweet about the pup version of Sir Patrick Stewart. Coincidentally, the iconic actor had recently become a foster parent to a homeless pit bull. Good sport that he is, even Stewart agreed the likeness was spot-on.

11. Nick Offerman Cats a.k.a. Cats That Look Like Ron Swanson

Skip ahead to 1:43 in this Conan interview, where The Parks and Recreation actor admits that all the feline twin attention is “flattering.” Honestly, who wouldn’t want an entire fan-made Tumblr devoted to kitty lookalikes?

12. Steve Buscemi Dog

As it turns out, Ari isn’t the only dog who looks like Steve Buscemi, but she is arguably the most famous. This mutt’s mug launched a thousand articles, and we’re happy to report the once-homeless pup not only achieved fame with her unique face, but also a forever home.

13. Harrison Ford Dog

The origins of this scruffy cutie (we mean the dog, not Han Solo) are a bit sketchy, but his Internet stardom seems to have traveled from Buzzfeed to Twitter and Imgur instead of the other way around. Hmmm. This case may need a little Indiana Jones-style detective work.

14. Richard Branson Dog

Major U.S. tech firms press Congress for internet surveillance reforms

Major U.S. tech firms press Congress for internet surveillance reformsFacebook (FB.O), Amazon (AMZN.O) and more than two dozen other U.S. technology companies pressed Congress on Friday to make changes to a broad internet surveillance law, saying they were necessary to improve privacy protections and increase government transparency. The request marks the first significant public effort by Silicon Valley to wade into what is expected to be a contentious debate later the year over the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, parts of which will expire on Dec. 31 unless Congress reauthorizes them. Of particular concern to the technology industry and privacy advocates is Section 702, which allows U.S. intelligence agencies to vacuum up vast amounts of communications from foreigners but also incidentally collects some data belonging to Americans that can be searched by analysts without a warrant.

‘Backpack Kid’ Upstaged Katy Perry On ‘SNL’ And Mesmerized The Internet

It takes a lot to upstage Katy Perry, but Backpack Kid managed to do it.

Perry, who channeled Beetlejuice in a black and white striped coat, performed “Swish Swish” ― which is thought to be a Taylor Swift diss track ― on the season finale of “Saturday Night Live” this weekend.

The pop star was flanked by drag queens on both sides of a runway, before she moved aside to let them do their thing. Then a star was born:

Backpack Kid, as the people of Twitter dubbed him, stepped onto the runway and mesmerized the world with his backpack and the way he moved. (For the record, Backpack Kid’s real name is Russell Horning, he’s 15, and he’s on Instagram.)

People were delighted. They were in awe. They were confused. They had questions. They knew he had stolen the show.

Will we see more of Backpack Kid? Time will tell.

This Emotional Wedding Photo Is Bringing The Internet To Tears

Posed wedding photos can certainly be beautiful, but there’s something to be said for the raw, genuine emotion that’s captured in candid shots.

On April 30, photographer James Day was taking wedding pictures for a couple named Adrian and Roslyn, who tied the knot in Bowral, Australia. He was setting them up for some posed sunset photos when he was struck with a better idea.

“Just as the light became amazing, I scrapped everything I knew and I walked up to them and said, ‘Guys, stop posing. Just enjoy your first sunset together as husband and wife,’” he recalled in a Facebook post that has since gone viral.

Day then said to the groom, “I have a question for you, but I want you to tell the answer to Roslyn and not me. Out of the billions of people on the planet, you’ve chosen to spend the rest of your life with Roslyn. Can you tell her why?”

That’s when Adrian whispered his answer in Roslyn’s ear. Tears began streaming down her face. Day, too, began to cry, even without knowing what Adrian had told her.

“It wasn’t for me to hear,” Day told HuffPost. “I had him whisper it in her ear because it’s for her ears only. I like that they were able to share that moment privately ― well, until it went viral on the internet.”

“This is what I love to photograph,” he added. “Not the overly posed interactions.”

After the sentimental shot, the newlyweds and their photographer joined together for a group hug.

“A photographer that I look up to named Jesh De Rox once said to me that to move others you have to first be moved yourself. I think this is proof that he is right,” Day said.

Buckingham Palace Called An ‘Emergency Meeting,’ And The Internet Couldn’t Cope

Britain’s royal family sent the internet into overdrive on Thursday morning.

Rumors began swirling online after the Daily Mail reported that Queen Elizabeth II’s “entire household” had been called together for an “emergency meeting” at Buckingham Palace.

Royal officials later revealed the real reason for the all-hands meeting was to announce the retirement of Prince Philip, the queen’s 95-year-old husband, from official engagements later this year.

But in the time it took for the palace to make the official announcement, speculation and panic took over ― with much of it centering on the possibility that Prince Philip, also known as the Duke of Edinburgh, or another senior member of the royal family had died.

Prince Philip is, however, in apparent good health (he opened a new stand at the Lord’s Cricket Ground in London on Wednesday).

Here’s a roundup of just some of the other rumors ― plausible and otherwise ― that took hold of Twitter overnight before the royal family made its announcement:

The queen was going to abdicate.

Prince Harry had gotten engaged to Meghan Markle.

The queen was abdicating in favor of Prince Harry.

Prince Harry was going to be revealed as a wizard.

Britain was going to reclaim the United States.

Britain was going to declare war on France.

The palace’s empty rooms were being listed on Airbnb.

The Ministry Of Magic had fallen.

One of the queen’s Corgis had died.

The queen was going to be the new ‘Doctor Who.’

Hey, Donald Trump, The Internet Wants To Know Who General E. Watch Is

President Donald Trump’s tweets often have us scratching our heads. His Monday morning missives were no different — and people had a lot of questions.

Just after 8 a.m., Trump sent out the following:

His ranting and raving about “fake news” and polls isn’t new, but that last part ― a mention of one “General E. Watch” ― is.

Trump has his own sort of lingo, as we’ve seen with phrases “Easy D!” ― which was loosely translated to “easy decision.” But this one is less decipherable. General E. Watch is not a real person (who should not be confused with the very real General E. Lee) nor does it make sense if Trump had meant it as “generally watch.” The syntax is still a hot mess. Maybe “General E” refers to a general election, and the president is telling us to watch out?

We’re not alone in our confusion. Twitter was perplexed too.

And, naturally, jokes were made.

One man simply asked Trump what we were all already thinking:

The tweet mentioning General E. Watch has been up for over an hour and has yet to be addressed. Though Trump did send out a second tweet right after that appears to be unfinished:

He must be busy… being the president.

If you or anyone you know has any hot tips on who General E. Watch is, please let us know. The mysterious figure already has a Twitter account.

The former president was spotted serving as Michelle Obama’s dutiful Instagram husband on a boat near the French Polynesian island Moorea. (For extra dad points, he appears to be using a tablet.) It’s a familiar scene to anyone who’s ever gone on vacation with their significant other, until you learn the “boat” is an over 450-foot yacht belonging to bllionaire David Geffen, and that Bruce Springsteen and his wife, Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, and possibly Oprah were also on board.

The star-studded sail marks yet another envy-inducing aspect of Barack and Michelle Obama’s lives over the past month. Since January, they both hung out in Palm Springs and joined Richard Branson in the British Virgin Islands; he then holed up in an exclusive private island once owned by Marlon Brando, and she eventually joined him for some tropical paddleboarding

Much like everything else these two do, this photo opp prompted a delighted reaction from fans on social media:

Sigh. What we wouldn’t give to be a fly on that fancy, fancy yacht.

‘Feather Brows’ Are Here And The Internet Has A Lot Of Feelings

Feather eyebrows are not a flight of fancy.

They are a real thing, created by real teens living in the real country of Finland.

Stella Sironen, a 19-year-old makeup artist and her friend, Leevi Ikäheimo, came up with the idea by accident one lazy Sunday while Ikäheimo was brushing out Sironen’s eyebrows.

“Suddenly he busted out laughing,” Sironen told the Huffington Post.

Curious, Sironen took a gander at herself on her phone’s camera and totally got it.

“He had made a middle part on my brows … and we just laughed about it for the rest of the night.”

Sironen thought the look was so funny, that the next day she took a glue stick to her brows and decided to part them again. She paired the feathered follicles with some eye-catching blue mascara and posted a picture of the creation to Instagram.

The post soon went viral, receiving over 45,000 likes and the hashtag #featherbrows was born. The bold brow also ended up being pretty polarizing, tearing the online beauty community into two firm camps: Team YAS I Shall Recreate This Look and Team Ick, No Those Are The Stuff Of Nightmares.

Opinions were expressed on Instagram and Twitter.

As for Sironen, she is surprised by the response, especially since she posted her photo in jest. She even posted a second photo of the look and in the caption explained that the initial photo was a joke.

Yet, regardless of her post’s nature, she doesn’t really get the uproar about eyebrows.

“It’s strange that there is eye art, lip art and many other forms of creative makeup but brows have remained untouchable for years,” Sironen told HuffPost. “We’ve seen crazy eyebrows on fashion editorials and runways forever. I truly hope that this inspired makeup artists to explore brow art and experiment more!”

Internet Dresses Down Cuba Gooding Jr. For Lifting Up Skirt Of Sarah Paulson

Cuba Gooding Jr. lifted up Sarah Paulson’s dress at an “American Horror Story” panel Sunday night, prompting some concern on social media.

While Paulson greeted costar Kathy Bates at Los Angeles’ PaleyFest, Gooding crept up behind Paulson and pulled her skirt up. A surprised Paulson eventually realized what was happening and tugged her skirt down.

Whether or not it was intended as a playful moment between Paulson and Gooding, who also worked together on “The People v O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story,” some Twitter commenters expressed their surprise.

Digital Spy noted that Gooding had already pulled at her dress before the incident, prompting a playful slap from Paulson.

The Huffington Post has reached out to reps for both actors and will update this post accordingly.

This Missy Elliott Lyric From 2002 Has The Internet In Shambles

It’s been 15 years since Missy Elliott dropped “Work It,” her hit song that had teens across the country speaking gibberish in an attempt to imitate her catchy-as-hell hook.

But, for reasons the internet gods only understand, people are just now realizing what Missy was actually saying in her song.

You know the part we’re talking about:

Is it worth it? Let me work it.

I put my thing down, flip it and reverse it

Itsyerdinnaflipnwod……… ?!?!?!

On Friday, Missy tweeted a shout out to her fans who finally noticed her tongue-twisting hook.

“Yup, I FLIPPED IT & REVERSED IT,” she wrote, along with a clip of the famous line. “Go to snap. Try it.”

It’s not as mysterious as everyone’s making it out to be.

If you record the hook to “Work It” on Snapchat, then put the rewind filter on, you’ll see that Missy did exactly what she said she’d do. That line of gibberish is actually the line “I put my thing down, flip it and reverse it” played in reverse.

You can also see it by looking up the lyrics to the song:

I put my thing down flip it and reverse it

Ti esrever dna ti pilf nwod gniht ym tup I

A lot of people did not know how to handle this new information.

After the lyric went viral, resurrecting a classic hip-hop jam from 2002, the internet was split between those whose minds were blown and those who let out a collective, “DUH.”

No matter where you stand on this “revelation,” let’s all agree on one thing. Missy Elliott is the real MVP for having us sound like this for two and a half decades:

Tom Brady Wore A Massive Coat, And The Internet Loved It

It was a cool 40 degrees during the AFC championship game Sunday night and New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was just trying to keep warm. So he donned a coat that would have fit the Michelin Man.

Folks on Twitter could not get enough of Brady’s giant jacket, which inspired a fair amount of “Deflategate” jokes.

There were other references, too.

But SB Nation seems to have figured out what was really going on:

The Patriots beat the Steelers 36-17, and will play the Atlanta Falcons in the Super Bowl on Feb. 5.

Harambe and ‘Damn Daniel’ Among The Memes That Won The Internet In 2016

2016 has widely been considered a tough year. But not all of 2016 was a downer. The Internet, as it often does, has provided plenty of hilarity in the form of viral memes to lighten things up.

We took a look at Google’s 2016 search trends and found the top 10 most sought-after memes of the year. From Harambe memes to the angry Michael Phelps face, these Internet creations will go down in online history as classics.

1. Harambe

When Harambe the gorilla was shot in order to protect a small child who had wandered into his enclosure at the Cincinnati Zoo, public outrage ensued. The Internet, however, had other plans for Harambe, and used the incident as the basis for a series of viral memes that were hard to miss on social media, making Harambe the top trending meme of the year.

It’s no surprise that a meme making light of an animal’s death caused quite a bit of controversy, especially with the Cincinnati Zoo. The zoo deleted its social media accounts amidst a barrage of Harambe memes. During the 2016 presidential election, people even joked that they voted for Harambe as a candidate.

2. Damn Daniel

The “Damn Daniel” trend all started with a viral tweet, which featured a video of teenager Daniel Lara in his white Vans sneakers. Throughout the clip, Lara’s friend comments on his shoes, saying “damn Daniel.” You have to watch it to truly understand why this is Internet gold, and the second top trending meme of the year

3. Pokémon Go

Pokémon Go is not only the top Google search of 2016, it is also the third most viral meme of the year. With the game’s U.S. release on July 6, it makes sense that only a few weeks later, the Internet had already gone to work creating memes.

4. Dat Boi

It’s difficult to trace the origin of “Dat Boi,” the meme featuring an animated frog on a unicycle, but several sources believe it was inspired by an older meme on Tumblr from 2015. While pinpointing the source for its popularity is tricky, “Dat Boi” skyrocketed to viral fame in May 2016, when the vast majority of the “Dat Boi” memes were created.

Adding even more humor to this meme, it appears the image may have come from a physics textbook, according to this Twitter user’s discovery:

5. SpongeBob Caveman

Perhaps one of the most visually hilarious meme trends of the year was SpongeBob Caveman, also known as Primitive Sponge. For any SpongeBob SquarePants fans out there, you’ll likely remember the 1999 caveman episode that created the magical creature that is SpongeGar. Fast forward to May 2016, when a Reddit user decided to bring back SpongeGar, sparking the viral meme trend that is now known as SpongeBob Caveman. This timing explains why a spike in Google searches for the meme started in late May.

6. Michael Phelps

If you watched the Rio Olympics, you’re likely familiar with the angry Michael Phelps meme. When the camera featured Phelps’ face in the holding room, as he was listening to music and preparing for his 200m butterfly semifinal, the Internet immediately moved to meme-ify the moment.

What resulted from this unintentional death stare was a series of memes that we are certainly not going to forget anytime soon.

7. Donald Trump

The Donald Trump memes started trending during the first presidential debate in September, and saw its biggest spike in Google searches in early November, when the election took place. Largely created as a response against Trump’s policies and statements, this meme trend was met with controversy from Trump supporters.

8. “Making A Murderer”

The Netflix original documentary “Making A Murderer” left many viewers convinced that Steven Avery was framed and innocent. This inspired a series of comedic memes in his support. Google searches for the memes spiked around mid-January, about a month after the show premiered on December 18.

9. Ken Bone

During the second U.S. presidential debate on September 29, undecided voters had the chance to ask candidates their questions directly. Ken Bone inquired about the candidates’ energy policies, and immediately became an Internet sensation.

The memes started rolling out within the next few days, causing a spike in Google searches.

10. Birdman

During an appearance on the radio show “The Breakfast Club,” rapper Birdman went on a rant and abruptly walked off the show, thus sparking yet another viral meme trend. The first to poke fun at the awkward interview was an Instagram user who uploaded an edited version of the video, with Michael Jordan’s crying face over Birdman’s:

Culture of the Internet

Culture of the Internet

As we begin a new century, the astonishing spread of nationally and internationally accessible computer-based communication networks has touched the imagination of people everywhere. Suddenly, the Internet is in everyday parlance, featured in talk shows, in special business “technology” sections of major newspapers, and on the covers of national magazines. If the Internet is a new world of social behavior it is also a new world for those who study social behavior. This volume is a compendium of essays and research reports representing how researchers are thinking about the social processes of electronic communication and its effects in society. Taken together, the chapters comprise a first gathering of social psychological research on electronic communication and the Internet. The authors of these chapters work in different disciplines and have different goals, research methods, and styles. For some, the emergence and use of new technologies represent a new perspective on social and behavioral processes of longstanding interest in their disciplines. Others want to draw on social science theories to understand technology. A third group holds to a more activist program, seeking guidance through research to improve social interventions using technology in domains such as education, mental health, and work productivity. Each of these goals has influenced the research questions, methods, and inferences of the authors and the “look and feel” of the chapters in this book. Intended primarily for researchers who seek exposure to diverse approaches to studying the human side of electronic communication and the Internet, this volume has three purposes: * to illustrate how scientists are thinking about the social processes and effects of electronic communication; * to encourage research-based contributions to current debates on electronic communication design, applications, and policies; and * to suggest, by example, how studies of electronic communication can contribute

Jon Stewart: Donald Trump Is An Internet Troll Running For President

Comedian Jon Stewart returned to standup on Tuesday night, and wasted no time going after one of his favorite targets: Donald Trump.

“It’s like an Internet comment troll ran for president,” the former “Daily Show” host said of the GOP presidential frontrunner at the 9th annual Stand Up for Heroes event in New York.

(Warning: strong language ahead)

“When I was doing the program, we liked to make jokes about him because he’s hilarious and easily mockable,” Stewart said, according to Entertainment Weekly. “We would mock him with things such as, ‘He looks like a bewigged boiled ham,’ or something like that. So he would tweet in the middle of the night, ‘Jon Stewart’s real name is Leibowitz. He’s a Jew. Why does he run away from his heritage?’ You know, because that’s what I think most presidents would do. I remember Lincoln used to drunk tweet: ‘Hey, emancipate this, you fuck!'”

Stewart, who has had a long-running feud with Trump, was referring to tweets such as these:

Stewart expressed some disbelief that Trump is a serious contender for the presidency.

Are we really doing this Donald Trump thing? We’re really doing that as a country?” Stewart said, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “He’s fucked. I like to put my name in giant letters on everything I own as much as the next guy, but the only other people that do that are like 8-year-olds going to camp.”

Then, he broke out his famous Trump impression.

“Where did I put that building? Oh there it is, Trump. Boom. Where’s my fucking helicopter? Boom, Trump,” Stewart said. “Where’s my wife? Boom, Trump, nice.”

If Trump is aware of Stewart’s jokes, he has yet to fire back on Twitter.

Stewart had words for people who say they like Trump because of his unfiltered views.

“People are like, ‘I like Trump; he says what he thinks,'” Stewart said, per The Hollywood Reporter. ”What he thinks is stupid. That’s like if your friend is like, ‘I would like to fuck your mom.’ Why would you say that? … I don’t give a shit if you’re politically correct, just be correct, correct.”

While it seems Trump got hit with the sharpest of comedic barbs, Stewart also told jokes about Ben Carson, Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden and even himself before wrapping it up with some exasperation over politics.

“I’m done with this shit,” he said, according to EW. “Done, done, done.”

In the space of a fortnight, over 3.5 million people watched a YouTube clip titled Vaginal Knitting, shot by SBS2. The clip offers an overview of Jenkins’ work, documenting her 28-day performance piece Casting off My Womb, where Jenkins’ uses skeins of wool, lodged in her vagina to knit a long passage, marking one full menstrual cycle. Obviously this kind of art pulls people one of two ways — you either hate it or you love it. For me it was the latter.

Vanessa de Largie:
Casey. Thank you for allowing me to interview you about your performance piece Casting off My Womb. It’s a very powerful piece triggering hate, disgust and love amongst your audience. How did this project evolve?

Casey Jenkins:
In my work and my life I’ve always been intrigued by how identities are formed in relation to broader communities. I’m interested in outsiders, people who go against the grain, and to what extent it’s possible to forge an autonomous sense of self if it runs counter to established powerful group-think attitudes enforced by shaming.

Casting Off My Womb was an exploration of the expectations society has of appropriate behavior for a person with a body like mine, particularly in regards to bearing children, creating art and voicing opinions, and how closely those expectations align with or skew what I choose to do with my body and my life.

I’ve done a lot of work in the past with craftivism (craft activism) which honors and subverts so-called “feminine” crafts and uses society’s dismissive attitude towards making techniques such as knitting and embroidery to pull the wool over their eyes, so to speak. A political slogan stitched on a fence, for example, is much more likely to be read with a smile than one scrawled with a spray-can. I’ve also explored how words describing body parts associated with women are considered the most offensive in our language and the way those body parts are used as focal points for the expression of misogynistic shaming. Casting Off My Womb was a natural progression of all of these things.

2015-08-28-1440778230-1502391-IMG_0026.JPG

Vanessa de Largie:
Knitting with your vagina was one thing but choosing to be authentic and knit whilst menstrual, caused reaction from around the globe. Did you expect there to be such negativity?

Casey Jenkins:
I performed Casting Off My Womb in a small gallery over 28 days. While I wasn’t painting bland water-colour landscapes, (and very little referencing menstruation or bodies associated with women will be viewed as benign), in the context of performance art within a gallery space the work was not particularly bombastic and I expected it to be received with circumspection and consideration, which it initially was.

When SBS TV asked to report on the work I knew it would ruffle some feathers — in a medium in which blue liquid is used to advertise tampons, how could it not? It was when they posted their report to youtube with the title “Vaginal Knitting” that the mass of negative responses poured in. I knew menstruation was a taboo, but the scale and vitriol of the internet response did surprise me.

Vanessa de Largie:
Personally, I found it sad that so many females deemed your performance piece as disgusting. What do you think this says about society and menstrual stigma?

Casey Jenkins:
Shame is an incredibly powerful force for maintaining and enforcing prevalent attitudes. It’s fascinating because those targeted by it often seem to be engaged most actively in its perpetration; perhaps as a way of trying to personally avoid the most hurtful direct impact of the shaming they align themselves with the status quo. Menstruation is the target of a lot of misogynistic attitudes. The fact that those who might be hurt by misogyny are taking part in the shaming is an indication of how deeply entrenched it is in the world today.

2015-08-28-1440773730-6825436-highres_IMG_0030.jpg

Vanessa de Largie:
I have to ask you this. As a woman, period-time can be tough — menstrual cramps, fatigue, crankiness and discomfort. Did you rehearse the work in the months prior to allow your body to adjust or was it done raw? And when you finally did perform that part of the female cycle, was it f**king liberating?

Casey Jenkins:
As a little side-note but I feel it’s important to say, I don’t personally associate menstruation with womanhood — not all women menstruate and some trans men and genderqueer people do.

I do menstruate currently, obviously, and there was honestly little to no physical discomfort in performing that aspect of the work. Spending the days rhythmically knitting and being open about the rhythms of my body was a soothing, calming and, yes, liberating experience — much more comfortable than hiding my period away and pretending my body was functioning ‘normally’, as I would usually do. I did make prototypes prior to the performance but they were more to test the absorbency of the wool rather than my body’s tenacity. It was not a great physical feat.

Vanessa de Largie:
What’s next for you and your art?

Casey Jenkins:
I’m developing a work in collaboration with a neuroscientist and a computer-scientist exploring visual perception, intimacy and how our experiences shape our prejudices, world views and ability to empathise with others.

I’ve also been screen-shotting and compiling all of the internet responses to Casting Off My Womb (there are thousands and thousands of comments posted, mainly expressing sentiments like “WTF”, “gross”, “disgusting” and “she’s crazy”). I’ve been collecting and storing wool soaked in menstrual blood and am hacking a digital knitting machine to reproduce the most common of those comments using that wool.

The initial part of this follow up work will be shown as part of the upcoming “f generation” exhibit George Paton Gallery in Melbourne and will be shown in full next year.

The “People Power” Internet Business Superbook Five Books on Making Money Online

The “People Power” Internet Business Superbook Five Books on Making Money Online

The five books on making money online are as follows: Book 1. Business Website, Collect Money, Send Things Book 2. Internet Selling (Sell on Your Website & on the Big Internet Stores) Book 3. Online Classified Ads Book 4. Internet Marketing, Website Optimization (Get Visitors to Your Website) Book 5. Computer-Internet Jobs-Business E-commerce lowers the cost of transmitting information and makes it accessible to everywhere on the planet in under a second. That’s great but that’s all it is, a faster, more accessible means to do business. If your product is not very good and you have problems running your business, e-commerce will not magically make you rich. Many players tried to make money from the internet itself like ebay, amazon, google, etc. but most failed. Many retail internet websites failed but some fared alright, the ones that had a niche market where the products they sold could be easily shipped by a delivery company and already established companies who merely put out a website to enhance their existing business. The major disadvantages of internet sales are as follows: Some things are meant to be sold in person like clothing, a car, flowers, etc. Some things are simply not condusive to being shipped because it costs too much like dog food, garden tools, etc. Customers are picky about some things, they complain a lot and there’s room for fraud. Consider vitamins. There are fakes and cheap knock-offs. If you buy a bottle at your local health food store, you feel safer than buying a bottle over the internet. The shipping costs make some things not amenable to being sold over the internet like small, inexpensive things where the cost of shipping is as much as the product itself. Anything that’s perishable can’t be sold. A big part of buying is impulse. You see something at the mall and buy it. Some products have to be inspected. You can’t get a feel for them over the internet. Some products don’t have enough buyers to justify a websit

Amy Schumer Shows Why The Internet Needs To Get Over Its Disney Princess Obsession

The Internet is nauseatingly obsessed with Disney princesses, and even more obsessed with imagining them in some altered state. (As Velociraptors, seriously?) While websites love to fixate on things like how characters are animated so that their eyes are bigger than their wrists, or how they would look if they had more realistic waistlines, Amy Schumer’s latest sketch tackles the bigger question of why anyone would want to be a princess at all.

Sure, Disney movies and their characters are sanitized versions of classic fairy tales by the Grimm Brothers and Hans Christian Anderson, but when all the adventure is said and done, being a princess is actually all about being married off as an underage teenager, and hoping you can produce a male heir.

Besides, everyone knows happily ever after isn’t a real thing.

WTF! Merriam-Webster Adds A Bunch Of Internet Slang To Dictionary

Emoji (noun):

Merriam-Webster just added “emoji,” “meme,” “WTF” and “clickbait” to the dictionary among 1,700 new words, meaning that the Internet has succeeded in ruining the English language.

JK LOL

In a blog post, Merriam-Webster noted that some of the new words are “kind of goofy” and some come from the “not-so-natural world,” including “net neutrality,” “dark money,” “click fraud,” “photobomb” and “NSFW.” We’ll take just a little credit: The entry for “jegging” includes a citation from a HuffPost article, and another citation for “clickbait” refers to “those seductive Huffington Post-esque headlines.”

dictionary

The dictionary site reports that its editors identify new words by spending an hour or two each day reading newly published material, online and otherwise, and checking for new and common word usage.

You can read more about new words you’ve probably never heard, like “eggcorn,” by clicking here, or check out some of the best additions below, as compiled by Time magazine:

WTF (abbrev.)
Definition: what the f—, used especially to express or describe outraged surprise, recklessness, confusion or bemusement.

eggcorn (n.)
Definition: a word or phrase that sounds like and is mistakenly used in a seemingly logical or plausible way for another word or phrase either on its own or as part of a set expression.

colossal squid (n.)
Definition: an extremely large squid occurring in deep waters of the Southern Ocean that is the largest known living invertebrate.

sharing economy (n.)
Definition: economic activity that involves individuals buying or selling usually temporary access to goods or services, especially as arranged through an online company or organization.

The Internet Is Actually Your Great Grandma Doris

The Internet seems like it is always changing and is always on the forefront of new technology, but when it comes down to it, the Internet always has been and always will be our Great Grandma Doris: absolutely lovable but also a bit stuck in her ways and ultimately someone who you think twice before bringing to an upscale restaurant. Stick with me here.

First of all, the Internet has been a bit senile and doing this thing lately where it forgets the natural passing of time. Essentially, the Internet is our Great Grandma Doris sending us five dollars for our birthday three times a year and then surprised to see how much we have grown. It’s okay, Internet. We all make mistakes. While triple the birthday money is almost always welcomed with open arms, why is the Internet so obsessed that time passes and people age? Should we truly be surprised that a child star who was five the last time we saw them now looks like a 20-year-old because the person is indeed 20 years old? The Internet is Doris pinching your cheeks, showing your friends the pictures of you in your diapers or naked in the bathtub and not recognizing your new found adulthood.

Also, there’s no denying that Great Grandma Doris is kind of racist and can sometimes be a bit rude. And truly, so is the Internet. This one needs no further explaining, just read a few YouTube comments and you will understand. While we should not stand for this, we sometimes just accept it and say, “Ah! Just Doris being Doris.”

Great Grandma Doris wants nothing more to set you up with her best friend Gladys’s grandson and before that, it was her tax attorney. She is the original Tinder, OkCupid, Match, Christian Mingle, and would it be far off to say that Great Grandma Doris has a higher success rate?

Pinterest! This needs no explanation. Pinterest is essentially Great Grandma Doris’s craft room. Woman knows her way around a needle and thread.

Next, Great Grandma Doris does have an endless list of stories to share from her years growing up. But, take her stories with a grain of salt, as over the years details may be hazy and hey, maybe she is just bored and is making things up as she goes. Hate to break it to you, but chances are, she didn’t actually lose the role of Letter Turner for Wheel of Fortune to Vanna White (dream job, by the way). Regardless, both Doris and the Internet should be fact-checked. On that note, Great Grandma Doris has embarrassing stories about you that she has no qualms about sharing. Hate to say this, but so does the Internet.

All in all, the Internet is your Great Grandma Doris. She is a huge gossip, she says what is on her mind, and she is a questionable party guest, especially after a few drinks. She remembers the Beatles in their prime, worships Betty White, and is obsessed with real-life murder mysteries and Family Feud. She somehow knows all your business and always accidentally tells your mom. Thank you, Internet. Thank you for being all of our Great Grandma Doris. Now, please stop sending me chain emails that threaten my love life.

North Korea Blames U.S. For Shutting Down Its Internet, Says Obama Was Behind ‘The Interview’ Release

HYUNG-JIN KIM, Associated Press

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea called President Barack Obama “a monkey” and blamed the U.S. on Saturday for shutting down its Internet amid the hacking row over the comedy “The Interview.”

North Korea has denied involvement in a crippling cyberattack on Sony Pictures but has expressed fury over the comedy depicting an assassination of its leader Kim Jong Un. After Sony Pictures initially called off the release in a decision criticized by Obama, the movie has opened this week.

On Saturday, the North’s powerful National Defense Commission, the country’s top governing body led by Kim, said that Obama was behind the release of “The Interview.” It described the movie as illegal, dishonest and reactionary.

“Obama always goes reckless in words and deeds like a monkey in a tropical forest,” an unidentified spokesman at the commission’s Policy Department said in a statement carried by the official Korean Central News Agency.

He also accused Washington for intermittent outages of North Korea websites this week, after the U.S. had promised to respond to the Sony hack.

There was no immediate reaction from the White House on Saturday.

According to the North Korea commission’s spokesman, “the U.S., a big country, started disturbing the Internet operation of major media of the DPRK, not knowing shame like children playing a tag.”

The commission said the movie was the results of a hostile U.S. policy toward North Korea, and threatened the U.S. with unspecified consequences.

North Korea and the U.S. remain technically in a state of war because the 1950-53 Korean War ended with an armistice, not a peace treaty. The rivals also are locked in an international standoff over the North’s nuclear and missile programs and its alleged human rights abuses. The U.S. stations about 28,500 troops in South Korea as deterrence against North Korean aggression.

NetTravel: How Travelers Use the Internet

NetTravel: How Travelers Use the Internet

The Internet has thrown open travel resource channels that were previously accessible only to professional travel agents. Airlines, hotels, and tour companies are all moving onto the Web as a more direct way to connect with their customers. Author/Journalist Michael Shapiro explains how travelers using the Internet can save money by cutting out the travel services middlemen. The Net allows business and vacation travelers to get personally involved in their own travel. It gives them the freedom to learn more, choose wisely, and save money by searching for the best deals. "NetTravel features: First-hand accounts of how people discover hard-to-find information, get good deals, discover exotic destinations and find information their travel agents might never have provided. (For example, one man tells how his motorcycle trip through Europe was planned and arranged using Internet newsgroups. Another traveler tells how he and his wife were able to prepare an entire itinerary for a two-week train trip through Italy using rail schedules on the Net.The book emphasizes how empowering and exciting it is to have direct access to the information and plan one’s own trip. Travelers are no longer at the mercy of travel agents — they can now put their trip planning into their own hands."NetTravel highlights some of the best travel Web sites on the Net and how to make most effective use of these sites. Most importantly, Shapiro tells how researching and planning your trip on the Net enriches the entire experience. Advance research about the destination teaches you things you never knew about the places you will visit, history of the area, art and cultural information and more. Knowing ahead of timeabout modes of transportation, schedules, cost etc. takes the pressure off and allows travelers to fully enjoy their travels. And the Net often leads to personal connections with other who have similar interests, for example the American cyclist who, through Net newsgroups, met a British rider that he later connected with for bike trips through England. Who will this book appeal to. Simply everyone who’s ever stood at a reservation counter and wished they could turn the screen around and see what the agent is seeing. All the tools necessary to arrange entire journeys are now available on the Internet. Airline reservations and ticket purchases, train schedules, hotel reservations, car rentals agencies… they are all there at the user’s fingertips. Whether travelers need a flight schedules for the L.A.-N.Y. corridor, rail schedules for France, or rent-a-car information for Japan, the Net is the first place to look. This allows travelers to compare prices for tickets and services and to find obscure deals that travel agents would either miss or have not vested interest in offering. "NetTravel Road Map Shapiro draws a virtual road map to travel resources on the Net and shows how travelers are already using them. He tells how to distinguish good

How To Brainpick The Internet

the european

Maria Popova tweets 60 times a day but fears the Internet’s information overload. She told The European’s Max Tholl how to strike the balance and not conflate the amusing with the interesting.

The Bulgarian writer, blogger and critic is the founder of the BrainPickings, blog that features Popova’s writing on culture, art and things she finds on the Internet. Popova was featured in Forbes’ “30 under 30” list as one of the most influential individuals in media and was listed on “The 140 Best Twitter Feeds of 2012 List” by Time magazine. She spends anywhere from three to eight hours writing a day, publishes three articles a day from Monday to Friday, and tweets four times per hour between 8 a.m. and 11 p.m. EST with few exceptions.

“Literature is the original Internet.”

The European: You call “Brain Pickings” a “human-powered discovery engine for interestingness.” What’s your definition of “interestingness”?

Popova: Anything that moves me and impresses upon me some fragment of truth that leaves me different, even slightly altered and more enriched — intellectually, creatively, and spiritually.

The European: Do you think that that concept has changed in the digital age?

Popova: Not at all! What has changed is that we’ve conflated the amusing (cat slideshows! silly quizzes!) with the interesting, the temporary diversion with the deeper dimension of personal growth. The most “interesting” ideas are invariably timeless.

The European: How much do interests reveal about a person?

Popova: Kurt Vonnegut once wrote: “The most damning revelation you can make about yourself is that you do not know what is interesting and what is not.” No doubt it’s an intentionally cheeky sentiment, but there’s a grain — perhaps a boulder — of truth. We are a collage of our interests, our influences, our inspirations, all the fragmentary impressions we’ve collected by being alive and awake to the world. Who we “are” is simply a finely curated catalog of those.

The European: Do you have any idea who your readers are?

Popova: Based on the letters I receive, my readers cut across nearly every imaginable occupation, age group, and life path, so it’s difficult and misleading to attempt lumping them into an archetype or two. Just yesterday, I heard from a high school student in the Netherlands and a retired educator in Nebraska within minutes of one another. I think the only common denominator is that, like me, they are people interested in what it means to live — what it means to lead a good life, a fulfilling life, a purposeful life — which is, in turn, the only common denominator between all the ideas I read and write about.

The European: How do you select the things you present on “Brain Pickings?”

Popova: With that same lens: Is this something that’s both interesting and important, shedding light on some corner of human existence? Is it something that helps me answer even a tiny portion of that grand question of how to live?

“I still write for an audience of one.”

The European: Do you think that it is easier to establish consensus in the digital age because like-minded people can easily share what they like, thereby establishing a consensus about certain things among that group?

Popova: I’m not sure “consensus” is the right term, but people are certainly better able to gravitate toward like-minded others. The downside of that, of course, is that it creates a kind of echo chamber — or what’s been called a “filter bubble” — where we become even more firmly rooted in our existing beliefs through peer affirmation. It takes a constant practice — an increasingly urgent discipline — to seek out ideas that challenge us and stretch us. It’s a form of intellectual hygiene that has always been necessary, but never more so than in the digital era, where it is so easy and so frictionless to surrender to the filter bubble.

The European: There is such a huge availability of information on the Internet. Does this make it easier or more difficult to gather information and thereby knowledge?

Popova: I don’t think knowledge results from “gathering” information. If anything, the correlation is probably negative. The Internet does make it easier to gather — aggregate, as the jargon goes — information, but not necessarily to make sense of it. An overabundance of raw information devoid of context and interpretation can actually be detrimental to knowledge. Knowledge springs from the act — the art — of interpreting, digesting, and integrating new information with our existing understanding of the world. That’s why the human element is so vital in the age of algorithms, because we’re very far from having artificial intelligence advanced enough — morally and creatively, as these are necessary components of sense-making — to do this interpretation and integration for us.

The European: Do you think that, because of this huge availability of information, people have more interests today?

Popova: I can’t speak for others, but I’ve found in myself a tendency to retreat deeper and deeper into my existing interests as a form of self-defense against the abundance of demands for my time and attention. Again, it takes a certain discipline not to do that and to continually expand one’s ideological comfort zone, as it does not to scatter oneself too chaotically across a multitude of diversion.

The European: Anne-Marie Slaughter described “Brain Pickings” as “like walking into the Museum of Modern Art and having somebody give you a customized, guided tour.” Is that an accurate analogy?

Popova: It’s a very generous one. I certainly try to do this for myself — “Brain Pickings” remains a record of my own becoming, so I still write for an audience of one — in a more metaphorical way, of course, taking “art” to mean the art of living, encompassing everything from philosophy to science to design.

“The label is irrelevant.”

The European: You do draw a lot of inspiration from books. What are books better at than the Internet?

Popova: Literature is the original Internet — every footnote, every citation, every allusion is essentially a hyperlink to another text, to another mind. The difference — the advantage, for me at least — is that in books, those “links” don’t beckon as immediate demands for our attention, redirecting us elsewhere before we’ve finished the present thought, but serve instead as gentle invitations to extend this thought once we’ve finished absorbing and digesting it. There’s something to be said for the value of slow, continuous, deliberate thinking, which remains the forte of books and the Achilles’ heel of the vast majority of the web.

The European: Do you think that digital curation is a greater threat to traditional print papers than regular online journalism?

Popova: I’m not exactly sure what “digital curation” even means anymore — certainly not something I identify with at this point. But I do believe the editorial and the curatorial live on a spectrum. Every nonfiction writer is essentially a curator of ideas — whether this means the selection of academic and clinical studies to be cited in a Malcolm Gladwell-style pop psychology book or the snippets of articles highlighted and contextualized in a day’s worth of Andrew Sullivan’s blog. At their best, journalists — writers, editors, “curators”, or whatever we choose to label them — help people figure out what matters in the world and why. The label under which they do it is irrelevant.

The European: What was your favorite “Brain Picking” so far?

Popova: In a way, what has propelled me to do this for nearly eight years now is the longing for perpetual growth, for self-expansion and self-transcendence, which requires a hope that each new day brings a better “favorite.” That said, when “Brain Pickings” turned seven in the fall of 2013, I wrote about my seven most important life-learnings from those years, and those remain at the heart of what I write about and how I live, so that particular article is something I keep coming back to whenever I need to re-center.

The Internet for Dummies

The Internet for Dummies

Everywhere you turn, you can find traces of the Internet. Household products, business cards, radio shows, and movie credits list their Web site address sites (starting with ‘www’ and usually ending with ‘dot com’) and their e-mail addresses. The Internet is a new communications technology that is affecting our lives on a scale as significant as the telephone and television. Some people believe that when it comes to disseminating information, the Internet is the most significant invention, since the printing press. If you use a telephone, write letters, read a newspaper or magazine, or do business or any kind of research, the Internet can radically alter your world view. When the first edition of ‘The Internet For Dummies’ debuted in 1994, a typical Internet user was a student who connected from college or a technical worker who had access through work. The World Wide Web was so new that it had only a few hundred pages. Now, the Internet includes a hundred million people, connecting on their own nickel from computers at home, along with students ranging from elementary school to adult education. The 8th Edition of this perpetual favorite focuses on the parts of the Internet that are of the most interest to typical users, such as: the World Wide Web and how to find things there, including how to use Netscape and Internet Explorer; in’s and out’s of sending and receiving electronic mail (e-mail); ways (and means) to shop and chat online; an inside scoop on publishing your own home page; the real deal about downloading from the Internet.’The Internet For Dummies, 8th Edition’ describes what you actually do to become an Internaut (someone who navigates the Internet with skill) – how to get started, what you really need to know, and where to go for help – all in easy-to-understand terms and a helpful, friendly, fun-loving tone that’ll make your Internet travels a real treat!

Before The Internet, These Creepy 19th-Century ‘GIFs’ Mesmerized The Masses

GIFs are widely regarded as an Internet-age phenomenon. So, it might surprise you that more than 150 years before you saw your first “Mean Girls” GIF, people were also watching split-second, hypnotic and repetitive animations, also presumably to avoid doing their homework.

Creepy? Awesome? Creepy-Awesome.

These pre-digital GIFs were optical tricks, and were viewed on rotating devices called phenakistoscope and zoetropes. Wired Magazine reported last week on the man that has made it his mission to bring these seriously psychedelic animations to the Internet generation.

How many frogs can one guy eat?

Richard Balzer has spent decades collecting these fascinating, totally addictive toys of procrastinators past, and turning them into an online treasure-trove of vintage optic animation, dubbed The Richard Balzer Collection. Recently, he recruited Los Angeles animator Brian Duffy to transform some of his illustrated animations into modern-day Internet GIFs. The results are completely mesmerizing, and sometimes perhaps slightly disturbing:

We don’t even know what’s going on in this one.

Don’t you hate it when people just show up at your place without calling?

So. Many. Faces.

You can see more of these mind-boggling animations on Balzer’s Tumblr page.

The way these optical devices work is pretty simple. Most of these examples were viewed through a phenakistoscope, which contained one disk of sequential images:

politeness

The disk had equally spaced slots along the edge, and was attached to a 10-12 inch long stick. To view, you simply look in the mirror, spin the disk and watch the images rotate through the slots. This created the illusion of movement — like a circular flip-book. (Read about zoetropes, another type of moving image device, here.)

Then, this adorably formal couple would flirt, over and over and over again:

TK gifs

Charmed, I’m sure!

And these shockingly nimble jungle animals would repeat the same gymnastic feat:

TK gifs

They nail it. Every. Single. Time.

These toys aren’t the only early photography to have something in common with Internet memes. Eadweard Muybridge, who is credited as the first person to accurately capture a sequence of motion on camera, spent much of his time documenting the Internet’s favorite topic: animals, as seen in split-second animated sequences. Check a couple of his image series below, with an Internet age face-lift.

Just a camel struttin’ by:

TK gifs

Is this the first GIF of a buffalo you’ve ever seen?

TK gifs

So remember, next time you find yourself hypnotized by today’s Internet GIFs, you’re not wasting time, you’re engaging in time-honored cultural tradition.
