Fashion Business Students Hop to London City Island

CREATIVE WORKS: London College of Fashion, part of the University of the Arts London, has mounted an installation in London that’s all about business.
Held at Arebyte’s gallery space on London City Island, a man-made island near Canary Wharf on the eastern end of town, #FashionMeansBusiness showcases the work of Fashion Business School students, with displays that take in animation, films and interactive displays.
Work from more than 150 students is on display, with projects including supply chain and cooperative formation, the effect of subcultures on high street retail brands, sensory shopping experiences and the luxury market, CSR and sustainability within U.K. retailers’ strategies and supply chain responsiveness.
There are also projects with brands including Hyundai, Asos.com, Harry Hall and Bally Switzerland.
“This was an exciting opportunity to showcase an important area of the fashion industry and how LCF Fashion Business Schools students, graduates and alumni are transforming this exciting global industry from the inside out,” said curator Rob Lakin.
The exhibition, held in association with EcoWorld Ballymore, will run from Wednesday to April 29.

Carlo Rivetti Talks Passion and Innovation at Stone Island

A passion for product is what drives Carlo Rivetti, creative director and chairman of Sportswear Co. SpA, which manufactures the Stone Island brand.
Calling himself the “ideologist” behind the label, Rivetti said Stone Island was born in 1982 with an obsession and passion for product and product innovation.
Stone Island uses plating, coating, garment dying, copper, stainless steel, Kevlar, and reflective and heat sensitive materials for its garments. The Italian-based company has an in-house garment dying lab, where it can obtain 11 different colors on a garment, playing with the fabric, acidity of water, temperature, pressure and print. They have more than 60,000 dyeing recipes.
“My passion has always been to break boundaries. We always follow our ideas, and I’m sure that, sooner or later, the wave of fashion will hit us, and actually that happened,” he said.
Rivetti believes there are two key factors for Stone Island, one being the lab factor and a passion for research and experimentation. The central part is the product that includes shirts, pants, fleecewear, sweaters, coats and jackets. The second is that Stone Island gives status to its wearers. “The consumers feel important and proud when wearing Stone Island,” he said.

Z Supply Enters Retail Fray With Fashion Island Store

Z Supply LLC has opened its first store with plans of growing its retail footprint over time.
The 1,362-square-foot temporary store at Fashion Island in Newport Beach carries the company’s namesake basics brand and is also set to be used to test categories from the line.
The assortment includes the women’s collection in addition to some pieces from the Z Supply men’s line. The company will also sell items from its Zoo Supply line for pets, which launched last year.
The Fashion Island pop-up is scheduled to be open for a period of three to six months.
Z Supply chief operating officer Heidi Muther called the timing right to look at retail, as the company follows the game plans of a number of born-online brands or businesses with traditional wholesale models exploring direct-to-consumer through physical retail in a bid to learn more about their respective consumer bases.
Z Supply, the brand, has seen steady growth since its 2013 launch and is in more than 2,000 stores in the U.S. It’s part of a portfolio of brands created by Z Supply LLC that includes Black Swan, White Crow, Others Follow, Rag Poets, Icons of Culture and Pirate Surf. In total, the company closed 2017 with $ 50

Stone Island Continues to Grow and Gets Bigger in Retail

MILAN — Stone Island continues to expand its retail network.
“We are opening a boutique in Venice in the first semester of 2018 and we are looking for a location in Tokyo,” said Carlo Rivetti, president of Sportswear Co., which is Stone Island’s parent firm, adding that the company is also scouting stores in Milan to relocate its unit in the Italian city.
The Modena, Italy-based company counts 20 stores.
These include a 5,382-square-foot flagship in Los Angeles, which was officially inaugurated earlier this month.
“This is not only our biggest store but also the most beautiful,” Rivetti said enthusiastically. “Since we opened last summer, we can say that it has been working really well, exceeding our expectations.”

Located at the corner of North La Brea Avenue and West 1st Street, the flagship occupies an entire building and features extensive windows facing the street. Designed to carry current collections as well as an exhibition space dedicated to making customers more familiar with the brand’s heritage, the store’s interiors are marked by the presence of blue crystal walls separating the spaces, which are decorated with the brand’s iconic Rose of the Winds logo. This also appears on the ceiling and on the stone and steel flooring.

A Volcano Almost Appeared On The ‘Lost’ Island To Explain Its Powers

Way back in 2010, the passengers of Oceanic Flight 815 on “Lost” were finally enveloped in a wave of bright light, marking the end of the series after a fiery battle between good and evil. (And many viewers were left feeling deeply confused.)

As it turns out, that finale was supposed to look a lot different. As “Lost” insiders told Entertainment Weekly, there was supposed to be a volcano on the island, and it was supposed to erupt.

While observant viewers would have remembered the volcano from a flashback to the DHARMA Initiative days, it could’ve had a much more vital role in the show. Series co-creator Damon Lindelof explained how the volcano was meant to “visualize and dramatize the idea that the island itself is all that separates the world from hellfire and damnation.” It also birthed the smoke monster, who, in human form, was known as The Man in Black (played in part by Terry O’Quinn).

Showrunner Carlton Cuse recounted how the “Lost” team was “always looking to cannibalize anything on Hawaii,” where they filmed the series. “We also thought of the island as a character on the show, so we were always looking for things that would give it more personality,” Cuse told EW.

In the end, the volcano was supposed to erupt as Jack (Matthew Fox) fought The Man in Black over the island’s fate. As Lindelof explained:

The volcano had been dormant for the duration of the series, but based on moving into this endgame, the island had become unstable and the volcano was going to erupt. We were going to have lots of seismic activity, and ultimately, there was going to be this big fight between the forces of good and the forces of evil, which ended up in the series manifesting as Jack and The Man in Black, in the midst of magma. Magma spewing everywhere!

Instead, the pair fought, alongside Kate (Evangeline Lilly), in a glowing cave ― a less expensive substitute for a magma-spewing volcano. Volcanoes, apparently, are quite expensive. And so Ol’ Smokey was born out of that same, budget-friendly cave of light, after his brother Jacob (Mark Pellegrino) tossed him in as revenge for killing their mother.

“ABC was like, ‘Guys, we love you, and we’re letting you end the show; we can’t let you bankrupt the network in the process,’” Lindelof said.

In the end, viewers were left with only a slightly less clear picture of how the island works, as the finale left plenty of other unanswered questions.

The Lonely Island Tell The Story Of How ‘Dear Sister’ Came To ‘SNL’

Before they were never stop never stopping, or telling Lego World that everything is awesome, or even offering up “Congratulations on the Sex!” cakes, the comedic minds behind The Lonely Island — Akiva Schaffer, Jorma Taccone and Andy Samberg — were brainstorming ideas for a digital short late into an April 2007 week during “Saturday Night Live” Season 32.

“We were hard up for an idea because we had gotten through that we’d be making a digital short every week at that point,” Samberg said to The Huffington Post, referring to the pre-shot segments cooked up by the trio that regularly ran on the NBC variety show from 2005 to 2012. “One of us was like, ‘What about that “O.C.” thing? Maybe we could do that.’”

The “’O.C.’ thing” was an idea they’d hatched years before, after watching a 2005 episode of the seminal Fox teen show where Marissa (Mischa Barton) shoots Trey (Logan Marshall-Green) over a soundtrack of “Hide and Seek” by Imogen Heap (more commonly known hereafter in the pop culture lexicon as “Mmm Whatcha Say”).

“We were all kind of obsessed with it together,” explained Schaffer. “One day, Andy and Jorm took out our home video camera and, just around our apartment, kind of shot what I would consider the first 45 seconds, maybe minute’s worth of a short with no ending in mind … but it was not for any intended audience or for anything, really. It was just for fun.”

The just-for-fun idea in their library combined with a looming deadline eventually morphed into the digital short we all now know as “The Shooting,” or “Dear Sister,” on April 14, 2007. (It helped that “The O.C.” itself had just finished its run two months before the short aired, so an homage felt appropriate.)

Translating the idea from its beginnings into something with an arc of sorts was a challenge.

“It took a while for us to figure it out, just ‘cause there was no logical end. We had to really invent something,” Taccone said.

“And then it became completely logical,” Shaffer added.

We took a walk down comedy-memory lane with Schaffer, Taccone and Samberg for the short’s 10-year anniversary.

Did you guys have to run the short by Lorne Michaels or anyone before it made it on the show? What was the reaction when you first showed it?

Samberg: The first time Lorne would see any of our shorts was at dress rehearsal at 8 p.m. so I don’t think this was any different.

Schaffer: Yeah, and it played really well, and we were all kind of pleasantly surprised by that. I don’t think we thought it was gonna not do well, but we kind of didn’t know how much people would be on board for it, because it’s kind of a weird art film.

That’s what we kept laughing about, that we’d made kind of a weird art film that didn’t really have anything you could exactly explain why it was entertaining or if it was entertaining. The music layers on itself at the end, and that’s what was making us giggle in the edit room, it was like, “Ooh, we’re making kind of an art film here!” I remember saying that a lot.

And then playing it at the thing, you never know how the audience is going to react. I didn’t think that they would hate it or anything, but I thought it would be maybe quieter than it was. But it felt like they liked it right away.

Samberg: What we learned was that the sort of cinema and TV trope of the gunshot off-camera and somebody, in slo-mo, seeing blood on their own hands and realizing it’s them was more popular than we realized.

Jorma Taccone: I think that we also realized that we had our finger on the pulse.

Samberg (exasperated): No, Jorm, don’t —

Schaffer: Jorm should work in advertising for a little while. You have to forgive him. He’s a big advertising guy now.

When you guys brought Shia LaBeouf on, did he have any ideas of his own to add or was he just game for it?

Schaffer: He was just game. We always had a great time with Shia when he would come host. He was one of our favorites. I don’t even know how much we explained it to any of the actors, honestly. I think Bill [Hader] knew what it was ‘cause his office was next to ours and we would always, in the writing process, share with Bill, Bill would be there. And everybody else, we would just tell wardrobe what to dress them in and tell them where to meet us, and they would just kind of show up. I don’t know that we even pitched to them ahead of time.

Taccone: That was also a late-night one too, that people were showing up pretty late. Like, what time was it?

Schaffer: That was definitely a Friday night shoot, which is the worst, ‘cause then you’re editing it straight up till airtime. The reason that it looks the way it does is because there had been no plan to do it. I mean, based on basically what we already told you, which is that we were so stuck for an idea that we thought worthy of doing a short that we had to go back into our library and find something two years earlier. So that tells you how much we had been kinda stuck that week.

So it was definitely a last-minute short, and the reason it looks like it does is ‘cause that’s just a hotel suite. When it gets to be Friday night and you haven’t figured it out, then the only thing you can do is rent a hotel suite, grab some lights, and film in there. And so that’s what it is, just a hotel room and some lights.

I remember [Jason] Sudeikis being asleep on one of the beds of the actual hotel suite because we had asked him and Fred [Armisen] to come, you know, in their police outfits — they didn’t even know what it was for — and now it was like, three in the morning and we hadn’t gotten to their part yet.

Samberg: Yeah, and we kind of made up the ending on set, right?

Schaffer: Yeah, We knew it would be police officers showing up and then they would shoot each other, but I don’t think we knew that we would have them do it over and over again. Or maybe they weren’t gonna shoot each other, and we came up with them shooting each other on set?

Taccone: I can’t remember which part we came up with on set.

Samberg: It might have been just show up and read the letter and that was the blow on the whole thing, “Oh, she’s gonna [read] the letter about how they were all gonna shoot each other. How ‘bout that.” And then I think on set we had it that the cops shooting each other was also in the letter.

Schaffer: The fact that the music was overlapping was in edit. It was gonna be that it kept resetting.

Taccone: That was accidental. ‘Cause we let it go long, and then you were like, “Oh shit.”

Schaffer: Yeah, exactly, and it was like, “Oh, that’s cool.” And I do wanna give credit to Sudeikis because I feel like he was the first one to say, “Oh, we should shoot each other.”

The feeling I had first watching “Dear Sister” felt similar to watching the “David S. Pumpkins” sketch in this season of “SNL.” I was wondering what you thought about slightly confusing absurdity becoming sort of viral and iconic.

Schaffer: That’s high praise. We’re big into David S. Pumpkins.

Samberg: Basically anything like that where it basically makes no sense but there’s somehow a set of rules, they’re just not the rules of reality as we know it, we generally enjoy.

Schaffer: Yeah. It’s not pure random, because then pure random’s never funny, it doesn’t really have any meaning. But somehow, David S. Pumpkins taps into something everybody understands. It just becomes a delight.

Taccone: Those are also two great songs, you know: Imogen Heap, for obvious reasons, and David S. Pumpkins has an equally great song.

After the short took off with fans and got a life of its own, did that affect the way you approached shorts in the future at all?

All three: No, not really.

Samberg: It’s always a surprise which ones got, like, tribute videos and stuff. I never would’ve guessed that, for example, “Threw It on the Ground” would’ve been one, but that turned into one that people really liked. Like, kids liked it a lot.

Taccone: That’s kind of the advantage of “SNL” too, is that every week, no matter what you do, there’s gonna be a show next week, and you have to kind of reset and start from scratch. You don’t really have time to even — I mean, we were always sort of conscious of not trying to repeat ourselves, but there was no trying to follow something that was popular, because you couldn’t … there was no time to try to come up with, “Oh, is this gonna go viral?”

Samberg: Nothing ever went viral where, before someone made it, they said, “We want this to go viral.”

Taccone: This was early enough in the process that they didn’t clear music for internet use always and they weren’t putting things on YouTube, so it was especially impressive that it went viral considering it wasn’t put online. It was only put online by kids who were putting it online themselves. They only cleared Imogen Heap’s song for air, and so it didn’t even go online, so that’s how … I don’t know.

Samberg: That’s how much we have our finger on the pulse.

Nothing ever went viral where, before someone made it, they said, “We want this to go viral.”
Andy Samberg

Are there any sort of fun little moments that you guys remember from filming the sketch that most people wouldn’t notice when they watch it?

Schaffer: We were very impressed with Shia’s dead acting. When he hit the ground, he really let his head hit the ground. We were also impressed with how well he was able to hold his eyes still in a way that seemed, you know, whatever he was doing — thousand-yard stare — was really working for us.

The gun in it is also the gun, if you watched any of our pre-”SNL” short things we were making for our website — that gun was, I forget where we got it, but it’s like, shooting little plastic balls. We used it for everything that required a gun. That’s how homemade the digital shorts were at this point. We didn’t even ask the props department for a gun, we were just like, “Oh, yeah, we have that gun at home.” Everyone’s wearing their own clothes except for the costumes of the police, right? You guys, I think, are just in your own sweatshirts and stuff.

Taccone: To add to that gun story, what we did oftentimes with that gun — that was a little pellet gun — and we would ball up little wads of paper, when we all lived in Los Angeles together, and we would stuff them in the barrel and shoot each other with the gun and try to give each other little welts.

Samberg: Oh, yeah.

Schaffer: It was like an endurance challenge.

Was there anything else you wanted to add about the short?

Schaffer: We just love that people are taking interest in it. We loved it a ton and didn’t think it would become this popular, so it’s very fun to talk about.

Samberg: I guess the last thing I would like to say is: Shoutout to Josh Schwartz for creating “The O.C.,” and shoutout to Imogen Heap for making an incredible, timeless, classic tune.

Schaffer: I wanted to say to the kids to follow your dreams. When you watch this short, it requires nothing. Anybody could make it in their living room of their own apartment or house.

Taccone: Yeah, they could definitely get Shia LaBeouf to stop by.

Schaffer: We don’t have good lights, we don’t have anything. Except for cop uniforms, I guess. That would be — but anyone can go buy those at the Halloween store. My point is that there’s nothing fancy or unattainable about it, it looks like crap, it’s just an idea.

Taccone: I want to remind the kids to get out there and vote.

Stone Island Opens Pop-up at Kinfolk

Stone Island has established a presence in Brooklyn.
The Italian men’s wear brand, which has been trending with the streetwear community in the U.S. for the past couple of years, has set up a pop-up within Kinfolk, a men’s wear store in Williamsburg that’s sold Stone Island’s Shadow Project since it opened in 2014.
The pop-up is located on the upper level of Kinfolk’s store, which is located at 94 Wythe Avenue. Kinfolk also runs a café and a club, which sit next to its shop. Kinfolk is the only third-party retailer that will be carrying Stone Island’s Marina collection, which is also available at the brand’s SoHo store. The pop-up opens to the public today and Kinfolk celebrated the launch on Thursday night with a party.
“I think they were drawn to our ability to mix retail and nightlife,” said Keith Abrams, a co-owner of Kinfolk. “And we’ve always been excited by their mix of technical design and function.”
Most of the collection is on display at Kinfolk and it includes hooded jackets, striped T-shirts, shorts and bags covered in the Stone Island Marina logo. The collection is priced from $ 128 to $ 998 and the pop-up will be open through April. Kinfolk also housed

The Island of Seven Cities

The Island of Seven Cities

The gripping, marvel-filled account of how a native son took a casual walk up a mountain on Cape Breton Island and made an archeological discovery of world-shaking proportions. In the summer of 2002, at home for his parents’ fiftieth wedding anniversary, Paul Chiasson decided to climb a mountain he had never explored on the island where eight generations of his Acadian family had lived. Cape Breton is one of the oldest points of exploration and settlement in the Americas, with a history dating back to the first days of European discovery, and it is littered with the remnants of old settlements. But the road that Chiasson found that day was unique. Well-made and consistently wide, and at one time clearly bordered with stone walls, the road had been a major undertaking. In the two years of detective work that followed, Chiasson systematically surveyed the history of Europeans in North America, and came to a stunning conclusion: the ruins he stumbled upon did not belong to the Portuguese, the French or the English – in fact, they pre-dated John Cabot’s “discovery” of the island in 1497.Using aerial and site photographs, maps and drawings, and his own expertise as an architect, Chiasson carries the reader along as he pieces together the clues to one of the world’s great mysteries. While tantalizing mentions can be found in early navigators’ journals and maps, The Island of Seven Cities reveals for the first time the existence of a large Chinese colony that thrived on Canadian shores well before the European Age of Discovery. Chiasson addresses how the colony was abandoned and forgotten, in the New World and in China, except in the storytelling and culture of the Mi’kmaq, whose written language, clothing, technical knowledge, religious beliefs and legends, he argues, expose deep cultural roots in China. The Island of Seven Cities unveils the first tangible proof that the Chinese were in the New World before Columbus. Evidence that Cape Breton is the site of a Chinese settl

John Waters To Receive Honorary Degree From Rhode Island School Of Design

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — When the Rhode Island School of Design offered iconic filmmaker John Waters an honorary degree, he was surprised. After all, he got thrown out of every school he ever went to.

Known for quirky films that push the boundaries of good taste, including 1972’s outrageous cult classic “Pink Flamingos,” Waters is the keynote speaker at the prestigious art school’s commencement next weekend.

Waters will also receive an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree; recipients are chosen by the RISD community, and nominations are reviewed by a committee of students, faculty and staff.

“I don’t even know if I got a high school diploma. It’s very peculiar. I feel very flattered,” said Waters, who attended New York University briefly in the 1960s before getting kicked out for smoking marijuana on campus. “I feel like the scarecrow in the ‘Wizard of Oz’ when they give him a brain.”

RISD’s 2015 Honorary Degree Committee cited Waters’ body of films as an “enduring inspiration for RISD students seeking to break boundaries, challenge conventions, and define an expressive style,” said RISD President Rosanne Somerson.

“In the words of one nominator, he ’embodies the RISD ‘tude galore’,” Somerson said.

Waters will share a stage with three members of the band Talking Heads — two are RISD alumni — and New Yorker staff writer Adam Gopnik.

Waters has written and directed more than a dozen films over his decades-long career, many of them low-budget movies featuring a cadre of unconventional characters, including drag queen Divine, Waters’ longtime friend and muse. Waters saw mainstream success with 1988’s “Hairspray,” another cult classic that was adapted into a Broadway musical in 2002. He is also a published author and photographer.

“I shouldn’t have been in school. You go to school to figure out what you wanted to do. I knew what I wanted to do,” Waters said. “I wish I had gone to RISD. They would have encouraged my ideas. I could have made ‘Pink Flamingos.'”

Waters does more writing these days than filmmaking: The paperback of his 2014 memoir “Carsick: John Waters Hitchhikes Across America” debuts this month. Waters said he was inspired to hitchhike from his native Baltimore to San Francisco because his life is so scheduled and controlled.

“My inspiration has always been the same, which is human behavior I can’t understand, which is always my interest, always has been,” Waters said.

The filmmaker is looking forward to accepting his honorary degree, “Without irony, for one of the few times in my life.”

A year later, Alec is pleased to see Brooke back on his island, but soon discovers that the open, sexually adventuresome woman has been damaged, and it is up to him to not only find out what happened, but to restore her confidence in herself and in sex. Long Island Country Houses and Their Architects, 1860-1940

Long Island, particularly the North Shore, was the site of some of the most lavish and extravagant residences in the world. The island’s beauty, its proximity and easy travel access to New York, and its suitability for yachting and other recreational pursuits made it the perfect place for the leisure class. From the Civil War to World War II, almost 1000 estates were built there, often by the nation’s richest families-Morgan, Vanderbilt, Hearst, Astor, Woolworth, Chrysler, Whitney, Tiffany, Frick, and Guggenheim, to name a few. Long Island’s rich architectural history is presented in this important and long-awaited volume. It is at once a fascinating glimpse at the homes of some of America’s wealthiest families and a complete compendium of the architects who designed these breathtaking houses. Among them are Delano & Aldrich; Cass Gilbert; Richard Morris Hunt; McKim, Mead & White; Horace Trumbauer; Calvert Vaux; and Warren & Wetmore.

Philippes former lover, Tane, is still living in Tahiti and has his sights set on claiming Philippe for himself. Roman, feeling insecure following his devastating illness, watches helplessly as the big, muscular island god makes a play for his man. Philippe, too, seems thrilled to see Tane again. He would love to re-experience the sexy islanders touch, only with Roman participating in a threesome. But will Roman become mesmerized by the mysterious islander and agree to the salacious proposal? Come, feel the heat of Tahiti, and a demi-god named Tane.

Japanese Drummers Bring the Culture of Sado Island Statestide

Unlike any musical group I’ve ever heard, Kodo is a group of Japanese drummers that perform on a worldwide scale but remain rooted in the local community and rich cultural traditions of Japan’s Sado Island. The group boasts international esteem and is known for their innovative recreation of the traditional Japanese performing arts. The group spends two-thirds of the year touring (four months in Japan, and four months internationally) counting over 5500 performances in 47 countries worldwide under the theme, “One Earth”. Kodo continues to break boundaries of expression with their unique and vibrant living art-form.

They have been bringing their work to the U.S. since 1975. And thankfully we have the privilege of seeing them again–this time in North America for the Kodo One Earth Tour: Mystery’s debut outside of Japan. This new production, Kodo One Earth Tour: Mystery, was created by its Artistic Director and Japanese Living National Treasure Tamasaburo Bando. The leading Kabuki actor and onnagata (actor specializing in female roles), Bando was a catalyst for Kodo to break new ground in taiko expression.

I had the chance to talk to the group and get a better idea of how they make this unique mix of old and new work. You can see Kodo’s incredible performance live now through the end of March.

Steve Mariotti: How did Kodo get started?
Kodo:
In 1971, a handful of young men and women gathered on Japan’s Sado Island to form Sado no Kuni Ondekoza, a way for Japanese youth to learn traditional arts and crafts. They began to study and perform taiko, eventually taking the sound of the drum around the globe on world tours–all with the intention of financially supporting their arts program.

Members lived communally in an abandoned elementary school and spent much of their time practicing the taiko and training to run marathons. After debuting internationally in 1975, Ondekoza emerged as a professional performance group that became highly acclaimed among European and North American audiences. In 1981 the group changed its name to Kodo, with the singular mission of bringing Taiko to ears around the world while preserving various Japanese art forms on Sado Island.

SM: How is Kodo continuing these traditions today?
Kodo:
We are always looking for new ways to explore the profound subtleties of taiko. In the past ten years, this has meant that Kodo is exploring richer levels of stage expression. The Kodo Cultural Foundation supports both local and international activities through education outreach projects designed to give back to local communities.

SM: How does Kodo manage its tours and performances?
Kodo:
Since the group’s debut at the Berlin Festival in 1981, Kodo has given over 3,700 performances on all five continents. This comes out to about a third of the year overseas, a third touring in Japan, and a third rehearsing and preparing new material on Sado Island.

As for performances, we stand by three principles to build each performance. Building a Kodo performance program begins with blending these three elements together amidst the sights and sounds of Sado Island. It is then forged into shape on the anvil of dedicated practice and rehearsal.

The first is that performances are based on traditional folk arts, learned from local practitioners throughout Japan. Our intention is not simply to replicate these historical arts. Instead, by reinterpreting and rearranging them for the stage, we strive to capture their universal spirit and energy as they filter through our bodies. Art forms rooted in the earth are developed through intimate relationships both between people and their art as well as between art and nature. Therein lie invaluable treasures rich with insights for people living in a bewildering age.

Secondly, performances feature compositions by Kodo’s friends and mentors. These include composers Maki Ishii and Shinichiro Ikebe, Kabuki musicians RoetsuTosha and KiyohikoSemba, jazz pianist Yosuke Yamashita and Tamasaburo Bando.

The third element is that we use original works composed by Kodo members. In this case, Kodo’s members leverage their exposure to the rhythms and sounds of the many people and places they have visited as inspiration for their own creations.

SM: What is the process for joining Kodo?
Kodo:
Apprentices who hope to become performers or staff members will spend two years living together communally in what was once an abandoned schoolhouse. After this period, Apprentices who have been selected to become Junior Members spend one more year training and practicing in the hope that at the end of the year they will be chosen to become part of the Kodo organization.

Altogether there are currently about 100 members of Kodo, including 35 performing members including 6 junior members (27 men and 8 women) and 37 staff members. The performers range in age from 20 to 64 years old. We have 5 staff members from Sado Island. Our other members come from as far away as Hokkaido and Kyushu, and from everywhere in between.

SM: What is the Kodo Apprenticeship program?
Kodo:
In a converted schoolhouse in Kakinoura on Sado Island, young people are trained, not just in musical technique but also in all matters of body and spirit. Beginning in April, apprentices live communally and train for two years. From this group, probationary members are selected to spend one year as junior members, and if they are successful, they then become full Kodo members.

Kodo seeks people of all backgrounds who are interested in becoming apprentices, and perhaps the next generation of Kodo players. Apprentices live together while they learn taiko, dance, song, and other traditional arts in the rich natural and cultural surroundings of Sado. We have some specific rules for living there: drinking alcohol, smoking, using a mobile phone and internet capable devices of any kind are prohibited during apprenticeship, and they are given the time to fully devote themselves to their lifestyle on Sado.

Upon completion of the program, apprentices hoping to become Kodo members may be selected to become probationary members. Probationary members spend an additional year training on the job and can become full-fledged Kodo members if they pass the final stage of selection.

SM: How do members get recruited into the process, and what is daily life like once you are a member of Kodo?
Eri Uchida, member since 2010:
I started playing taiko in a local taiko group in Japan when I was sixteen, and then I moved to Canada to study abroad at a public high school. After I graduated from high school, I went back to Japan and decided that Kodo’s Apprentice Centre really was the best place to study.

On the day of a performance, I exercise near the hotel, eat a good breakfast, and see what kind of condition I am in that day. We create our daily rhythm by loading in and setting up the stage in a timely manner. While the technical crew take over the stage to set-up the lighting, we eat lunch, lightly exercise, and rehearse.

SM: What do you hope to accomplish during this North American tour?
EU:
This tour’s production, “Kodo One Earth Tour: Mystery,” features a lot of theatrical moments, so the timing and delivery are very important.I think the right “timing” may vary between different countries and environments. Therefore, it will be challenging to react accordingly and nail that “timing” in each performance. I want to make each performance the best performance for that particular place and audience. Also, the number of people playing taiko worldwide is on the rise and I think that the North American taiko community is very humble and constantly thinks about what taiko means to them. Interacting with them and performing for them makes me think about my own taiko playing, too.

SM: What do you think the artistic vision is for this tour?
Yuta Sumiyoshi, Kodo member:
We started off by taking apart our production style and any fixed idea we had. We were constantly challenged to express ourselves as a single taiko performer and a Kodo member, without the traditional happi coats and hachimaki headbands. I believe one of Tamasaburo Bando’s vision for Kodo is to broaden theatrical expression by learning how to express delicate musicality instead of just hitting the drums with all our might. In addition to the beauty that is being portrayed for each individual when we play taiko to the fullest, we are asked to work through the beauty of performing arts as well.

The Ellis Island Snow Globe

The Ellis Island Snow Globe

In The Ellis Island Snow Globe, Erica Rand, author of the smart and entertaining book Barbie’s Queer Accessories, takes readers on an unconventional tour of Ellis Island, the migration station turned heritage museum, and its neighbor, the Statue of Liberty. By pausing to reflect on what is and is not on display at these two iconic national monuments, Rand focuses attention on whose heritage is honored and whose obscured. She also reveals the shifting connections between sex, money, material products, and ideas of the nation in everything from the ostensible father-mother-child configuration on an Ellis Island golf ball purchased at the gift shop to the multi-million dollar July 4, 1986 Liberty Weekend extravaganza celebrating the Statue’s centennial just days after the Supreme Court’s un-Libertylike decision upholding the antisodomy laws challenged in Bowers v. Hardwick.Rand notes that portrayals of the Statue of Liberty as a beacon for immigrants tend to suppress the Statue’s connections to people brought to this country by force. She examines what happened to migrants at Ellis Island whose bodies did not match the gender suggested by the clothing they wore. In light of contemporary ideas about safety and security, she examines the “Decide an Immigrant’s Fate” program, which has visitors to Ellis Island act as a 1910 board of inspectors hearing the appeal of an immigrant about to be excluded from the country. Rand is a witty, insightful, and open-minded tour guide, able to synthesize numerous diverse ideas—about tourism, immigration history, sexuality, race, ethnicity, commodity culture, and global capitalism—and to candidly convey her delight in her Ellis Island snow globe. And pen. And lighter. And back scratcher. And golf ball. And glittery pink key chain.
