Ex-Cavs GM Explains What Caused Friction Between Kyrie Irving, LeBron James

LeBron James has moved on from Cleveland, but his former sidekick beat him to the punch. The Cavaliers lost franchise players in consecutive summers, as the team traded Kyrie Irving to the Boston Celtics last year before James joined the Los Angeles Lakers at the turn of free agency this offseason. James and Irving both find themselves in great, new situations, but their breakup in Cleveland still has left fans with questions. While the answers to many never will be revealed, former Cavs general manager David Griffin recently shed some light on what might have driven the two superstars apart. “Kyrie and LeBron didn’t have drama as individuals,” said Griffin said on the “Good N’ Plenty w/ Jeff

The Lakers baffled the NBA world with 4 moves immediately after landing LeBron James

The Los Angeles Lakers made one of the biggest moves in NBA history on Sunday by landing LeBron James in free agency. And then they proceeded to baffle the NBA world with some head-scratching moves over the next 24 hours. After signing Kentavious Caldwell-Pope to a one-year, $ 12 million deal (a sensible move), the Lakers continued by signing Lance Stephenson, one of James' biggest rivals, to a one-year, $ 4.5 million contract. They then added center JaVale McGee to a one-year, minimum deal. On Monday, the Lakers renounced their rights to free agent big man Julius Randle, a young, talented player with big potential, to sign 32-year-old point guard Rajon Rondo to a one-year, $ 9 million deal. James Harden, P.J. Tucker Take in Neil Barrett Show

JUMPING IN: James Harden and P.J. Tucker of the Houston Rockets flew into Milan Friday night and turned up the next afternoon in the front row of Neil Barrett’s show at the designer’s headquarters — where they were quickly surrounded by top men’s editors starry-eyed at meeting the sports celebrities and taking selfies with them.

P.J. Tucker and James Harden

Harden is a longtime fan of Barrett’s and wears his designs often — “I have more of his clothes in my closet than I realized,” Harden said, revealing he and Barrett are in talks about a potential collaboration, although he declined to reveal details. During the show he seemed particularly excited by Barrett’s sneaker designs, nudging Tucker several times to point at specific styles.
The basketball superstar said he hoped to spend the next day doing some sightseeing in Milan before he headed to Paris for the men’s shows there. He plans to attend Virgil Abloh’s Off-White show as well as Abloh’s debut as men’s artistic director at “Louis,” i.e., Louis Vuitton. “I’m excited to see that,” Harden said.

Draper James and Rockets of Awesome Collaborate for Children’s Wear With Help From SCAD Students

YOUNG ENOUGH: For its Mommy & Me capsule collection, Reese Witherspoon’s lifestyle brand Draper James tapped Rockets of Awesome to produce it and Savannah College of Art and Design students to help design it.
The SCAD students pitched in on what is the Nashville-based brand’s first venture into children’s apparel. Like the Reese Witherspoon-founded brand’s women’s collection, the styles for the junior set is southernlike in that there are plenty of stripes and true blue styles. SCAD students in the Collaborative Learning Center — fashion, accessory design, graphic design, fashion marketing and management, and fibers — helped design the collection over the course of a semester. That experience included a few classes led by Draper James’ team. Their designs were featured in the university’s annual fashion show SCAD FASHWKND.
The confirmation that “Legally Blonde 3” is in the works wasn’t the only celebratory news that Witherspoon had to share in the past few days with her 13 million Instagram followers. There was also Monday’s double graduation — her daughter Ava Phillippe graduated from high school and her son Deacon Phillippe has closed the book on junior high school. Younger members of the Oscar-winning actress’ family, two of her nieces Abby James and Draper

LeBron James and some of the NBA’s biggest stars reportedly have ‘disdain’ toward Stephen Curry that he doesn’t understand

Stephen Curry is one of the best, most well-respected, and most popular players in the NBA, but his quick rise in the league reportedly rubbed some of his peers the wrong way. In 2017, Marcus Thompson of The Athletic, author of the book "Golden: The Miraculous Rise of Steph Curry," explained to "The Big Lead with Jason McIntyre" that Curry is not all that popular with some of the league's biggest stars, including LeBron James. "There's this thing there with he and LeBron that's a little weird," Thompson said. According to Thompson, James and Curry were close from Curry's days at Davidson to his early years in the league. Thompson said James was "like a mentor" to Curry, but as Curry's game improved,

ENTERTAINMENT SPECIALS:

James Franco Is Calling Exes, Plans to Attend SAG Awards in Wake of Accusations

James Franco is digging into his past in the wake of allegations of sexually inappropriate behavior.

“James has been reaching out to former girlfriends for the past month asking about his behavior,” a source tells PEOPLE. “He’s known this was coming and was trying to get ahead of the story.”

Following news of the allegations, Franco, 39, took a step back from the spotlight — even skipping the Critics Choice Awards last week where he won the Best Actor honor for his role in The Disaster Artist.

But despite being a no-show, Franco is still set to attend the Screen Actors Guild Awards this weekend, where he is nominated for Best Actor.

“There is no reason to believe that he won’t be there,” says a source close to Franco.

During a recent appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, the actor addressed the sexual harassment allegations issued by a number of women on Twitter after wearing a Time’s Up pin at the Golden Globe Awards.

“There are people that need to be heard,” the actor told Meyers. “I have my own side of this story, but I believe in these people that have been underrepresented getting their stories out enough that I will hold back things that I could say, just because I believe in it that much,” he said. “So if I have to take a knock because I’m not going to try and actively refute things, then I will, because I believe in it that much.”

In an article published in the Los Angeles Times on Jan. 11, five women accused the actor of abusing his power as an acting teacher and mentor in a sexually exploitative manner. In it, two students claimed the actor would often become angry on set when they would refuse to film topless while another former acting student at the film school Franco founded said he once removed safety guards while filming an oral sex scene on the set of the 2015 film The Long Home.

Additionally, actress Violet Paley recounted her previous social media claims that Franco exposed himself and tried to pressure her into oral sex. Though she said they had a consensual relationship, Paley said: “that time wasn’t consensual.” She also alleged that he told her friend to meet him in a hotel when the friend was 17.

Franco’s attorney, Michael Plonsker, denied each of the women’s allegations, and cited Franco’s comments on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Tuesday as his formal denial.

“Look, in my life I pride myself on taking responsibility for things that I have done,” Franco told Colbert. “I have to do that to maintain my well being. The things that I heard that were on Twitter are not accurate. But I completely support people coming out and being able to have a voice because they didn’t have a voice for so long. So I don’t want to shut them down in any way.”

James Corden Reveals His ‘Quite Terrifying’ Recurring Nightmare

Is James Corden afraid of the ocean? That or his sleeping subconscious might be trying to tell him something.

The Emmy-nominated Late Late Show host joined PEOPLE’s Editor-in-Chief Jess Cagle in the latest episode of The Jess Cagle Interview (streaming now on the People/Entertainment Weekly Network) and revealed a few deep dark secrets — namely that he has a scary, chronic nightmare.

“My recurring nightmare is that I’m in the middle of the ocean, and no one knows I’m there, and I don’t know what to do,” Corden said. “We’re joking about it now, but it genuinely is quite terrifying.”

Cagle also asked Corden about the one thing he wishes he could do on TV, the celebrity he’d most like to kiss and what keeps him up at night.

“The one thing that I wish I was allowed to do on television but I’m not is call in sick with no repercussions,” Corden said. “If I had to kiss one celebrity right now, it would be John Mayer because, you know, it just sounds like it’s fantastic.”

And while Corden admitted that his kids (daughter Carey, 2½, and son Max McCartney, 6) keep him up at night, overall his life is good — especially since his wife Julia is expecting their third child.

“If life’s not good right now, how’s it ever going to get better than this?” he said. “It’s amazing.”

James Corden Sends 297 Copies Of ‘Philadelphia’ To Donald Trump

James Corden blasted President Donald Trump Tuesday for ignoring the HIV/AIDS crisis ―but he’s come up with a humorous solution to educate him.

Following a report that six members of the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS resigned in protest against Trump’s lack of policies to fight the epidemic, Corden urged Trump to readjust his attitude.

Corden became serious as he pointed out that nearly 60 percent of the more than 1.1 million people in the U.S. who live with HIV and AIDS are unable to access lifesaving medications, and questioned whether the president cared.

Then “The Late Late Show” host changed gears, surmising that this was perhaps because Trump has never seen the acclaimed 1993 AIDS drama “Philadelphia” starring Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington. The film enlightened Corden, and he thinks it could have the same effect on the president.

So Corden’s staff, at first rebuffed by the White House, sent 297 copies of “Philadelphia” to Trump’s Mar-a-Lago in Florida.

“We hope that if Trump watches ‘Philadelphia,’ he’ll understand two things: One, Tom Hanks definitely deserved that Oscar,” Corden said. “And number two, we hope that he’ll realize that HIV and AIDS is something that you or any president of the United States ― or any world leader for that matter ― can never afford to ignore.”

Watch the segment above and hope that Trump takes the time to watch this memorable character below.

James Corden Roasts David Beckham For Matching Outfits With Posh

We’ve all committed a few fashion faux pas we’d rather not recall. But James Corden isn’t letting David Beckham forget his for a second.

On his show this week, the comedian busted out a throwback photo series of David and his wife Victoria Beckham in coordinating outfits, in anticipation of the couple’s 18th wedding anniversary next month.

Corden was a merciless fashion cop, poking fun at the matching purple ensembles the couple wore on their wedding day in 1999.

He also had choice words for some some revealing pants-and-top combos they sported on the red carpet two years later.

Beckham refused to apologize for the duo’s outfits of yore.

“I’m not saying I regret them because at the time, it felt right,” he told Corden. “Now, I’m not so sure.”

See some of the pair’s highlights ― or are they lowlights? ― below and in the video above.

James Franco Talks ‘Sleazy New York’ at Coach Breakfast

James Franco made his first appearance as the face of Coach’s forthcoming men’s fragrance wearing a navy intarsia sweater with a Space Shuttle motif — and talking about the “sleazy New York of the Seventies” and its then “burgeoning porn industry.”
The actor, whose face broke into a big smile the minute he addressed a press gathering on Monday morning in Manhattan, was referring to the yet-to-be-released HBO series “The Deuce,” in which he plays twins involved in that industry.
Coach unveiled a short commercial and print ad lensed by Steven Meisel, picturing Franco leaning against a vintage car with the Manhattan skyline in the background.
“The shoot was interesting,” Franco demurred, before sitting down to a three-course breakfast perfumed with cardamom, kumquat and geranium, which are among notes in the scent, produced under license by Inter Parfums SA.
The event fell on a special day for Victor Luis, chief executive officer of Coach Inc. “Today is my 11th anniversary at Coach,” he told the crowd, introducing Joshua Schulman, president and chief executive officer of the Coach brand, who started work that very morning and was toting a seating plan for the brand’s vast offices in a futuristic office tower at Hudson Yards.

The Third James Bond, Roger Moore Has Died

Sir Roger Moore, the actor most famous for being the third person to play James Bond in the mainline film series, has died at 89.

Announced by his children on Twitter, Moore passed away after a “short but brave battle with cancer”.

Moore played the world’s most famous spy in seven films, including Live and Let Die and The Man With the Golden Gun. He brought the most outright humour to the Bond series of any of the mainline actors, and remains a favourite of many for that reason.

James Corden Delivers Emotional Tribute To The ‘Manchester I Know’

James Corden returned to the “Late Late Show” set on Monday evening to deliver a special message in response to the attack in Manchester at an Ariana Grande concert.

Speaking to the camera on a quiet, empty set, Corden seemed to be on the verge of tears as he acknowledged the victims.

“It shocks me every time we hear this sort of news that attacks like this can happen, but especially when there will be so many children at this concert tonight,” he said.

An Englishman, Corden spoke about many of the good things that came out of Manchester, from its musicians to its sports to its food, and mentioned that it was also the birthplace of suffragette leader Emmeline Pankhurst.

“But when I think of Manchester, the place that I know, I think of the spirit of the people there. And I’m telling you, a more tight-knit group of people you will be hard-pressed to find. Strong, proud, caring people with community at its core. And if it was even possible, the spirit of the people of Manchester will grow even stronger this evening.”

Stephen Colbert Imagines The Initial Drafts Of Donald Trump’s Letter To James Comey

Writing James Comey’s termination letter didn’t come easy for President Donald Trump. Apparently.

On Wednesday, the “Late Show with Stephen Colbert” imagined some of the initial drafts of the final note that Trump sent to the now former FBI director informing him of his firing.

Evolving from single line statements to ones written in Russian, they’re amusingly chronicled in the clip above.

Pop Art Pioneer James Rosenquist Dead At 83

Artist James Rosenquist, a leading figure of the 1960s pop art movement known for his room-sized works, has died at the age of 83, his studio said.

Rosenquist helped define the genre of color-bursting displays of common objects that was also championed by the likes Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein.

He died on Friday, the studio said, without providing further details.

Rosenquist had early experience as a billboard painter, which became a springboard for presentations of images that he culled from sources including print advertisements and magazines, it said.

He had shows in some of the world’s most celebrated museums, including New York’s Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in Spain, it said.

“Painting is probably much more exciting than advertising,” Rosenquist was quoted as saying by the Museum of Modern Art.

“So why shouldn’t it be done with that power and gusto, with that impact.”

One of his more celebrated works is “F-111,’ which is billboard in size and made in 1964 and 1965, during the U.S. war in Vietnam. It combines images including a U.S. military warplane, a bombing and scenes of American prosperity, including a smiling blonde girl sitting under a hair dryer reminiscent of a missile, the museum said.

His celebrated 1962 painting of Marilyn Monroe was created shortly after her death and shows fragmented images of the global star that includes a segment of the Coca-Cola brand name, it said.

Rosenquist was born in Grand Forks, North Dakota where he had a nomadic life that took him and his parents to about a half dozen places including in Minnesota and Ohio. He studied at the University of Minnesota and moved to New York in his twenties.

“Painting has everything to do with memory. Images of the unexpected, the surreal, well up unbidden in your mind – as do things you haven’t resolved,” he said in his autobiography written with David Dalton titled “Painting Below Zero.”

James Corden Reveals He Once Spanked Donald Trump’s Ass

James Corden says he once gave President Donald Trump a bit of a spanking. Literally.

On Tuesday, the “Late Late Show” host recounted to his guests Kerry Washington and Alec Baldwin how he smacked the current president’s derrière during a play he was performing in New York City in 2012.

“There used to be a part of the play and I’d bring someone up on stage, and I brought him up to move some set,” Corden told the actors. “I was spanking his ass, he bent over, I was spanking him.”

Corden also revealed that following Trump’s impromptu performance, the-then reality TV personality walked off into the wings and greeted everyone with handshakes.

The display was enough for Corden’s stage manager to suggest that Trump “thought he was the president of the United States.”

Corden’s revelation prompted Baldwin, who’s portrayed Trump on “Saturday Night Live” to great effect in recent months, to reveal he thought the president would loosen up a little following his election win.

“He used to be very playful and funny. I don’t know what’s with him now,” Baldwin said.

“When he won, I thought he’d relax and be more generous and it seems like he won but he acts like he lost. He’s very bitter now.”

While Corden did not name the play he was starring in when he spanked Trump, it was likely to be the Broadway hit “One Man, Two Guvnors” in which he starred in 2012 and for which he won a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play.

Spencer Hays, Chief of Oxxford and Tom James, Dies at 80

Spencer Hays, a genteel Southerner who parlayed a career as a door-to-door Bible salesman into a multimillion-dollar men’s wear business, has died at the age of 80.
The cause of death was a brain aneurysm that he suffered in New York on Wednesday, according to a spokeswoman from Tom James, one of Hays’ companies. No services have been set at this time.
Hays, who split his time between New York and Nashville, was also the owner of Oxxford Clothes and Individualized Apparel Group and the executive chairman and majority owner of the Southwestern Company, a firm that recruits students to sell books and educational materials door-to-door.
A native of Oklahoma, Hays traveled to Nashville in 1959 during his freshman year at Texas Christian University as a salesman for the Southwestern Company. Hays joined the company full time after graduation, eventually becoming president and chief executive officer. Under his leadership, the business has grown to 12 companies under the umbrella of the Southwestern Family of Companies.
He took the skills he learned in direct selling to the men’s wear business in 1966, creating the Tom James Co. in Nashville. Tom James is credited with inventing the business of selling high-quality suits to men in their

James Cameron Defends Titanic Ending: Mythbusters Is ‘Full of S—‘

A version of this article originally appeared on ew.com.

That floating door could not have held two people, James Cameron says.

The Oscar-winning director of Titanic was asked in a recent interview with The Daily Beast about the long-running dispute over the ending of his 1997 blockbuster hit, when a piece of wood debris from the title ship keeps Rose (Kate Winslet) out of the freezing water while her lover Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) perishes. C’mon, there had to room for both of them on there, right? After all, didn’t Discovery Channel’s Mythbusters prove they could both have survived using their lifejackets tied to the door for added buoyancy?

“OK, so let’s really play that out,” Cameron said. “You’re Jack, you’re in water that’s 28 degrees, your brain is starting to get hypothermia. Mythbusters asks you to now go take off your life vest, take hers off, swim underneath this thing, attach it in some way that it won’t just wash out two minutes later — which means you’re underwater tying this thing on in 28-degree water, and that’s going to take you 5-to-10 minutes, so by the time you come back up you’re already dead. So that wouldn’t work. His best choice was to keep his upper body out of the water and hope to get pulled out by a boat or something before he died.”

Cameron added about the Mythbusters series: “They’re fun guys and I loved doing that show with them, but they’re full of sh–.”

Back in 2012, the Mythbusters team presented Cameron with the results from their tests. “I think you guys are missing the point here,” Cameron said at the time. “The script says Jack dies, he has to die. Maybe we screwed up. The board should have been a tiny bit smaller. But the dude’s going down.”

Cameron didn’t only talk about Titanic in this new interview; he also says we’re probably doomed, too. The director was asked about whether he was concerned that Donald Trump would wreck the environment now that he’s president.

“Am I worried? Of course,” he said. “I’m like anyone of good conscience and reasonable intelligence. I think we’re the biggest freakin’ idiot civilization in history right now, and they’ll probably be talking about us 4,000 years from now scratching their heads — like they talk about Atlantis. Who are those guys? What did they do to piss off the gods so much that they’re buried under a hundred feet of mud right now? … It’s basically the upside-down world right now, and the kind of dialogue coming out of these guys sounds like George Orwell. Alternate facts? There’s no such thing as an alternate fact! These people are insane. But I’m keeping my head down, doing the stuff that I thought I would be doing if Hillary was elected. I’m making my Avatar films, I’m doing my climate work, I’m doing my sustainable agriculture work. You can only do what you can do.”

Backstory: What do you get when you merge a film editor and a personal trainer? James Frank Club, a new online men’s store with an assortment of independent and artisanal brands. Cofounded by Jim Rubino, the film editor, and his trainer, Trevor Handberry, the site offers everything from suits and denim to bags, barware, grooming products and home goods. The idea for the business came after Rubino was frustrated with the duplication he found at the men’s stores around New York. Believing there had to be more guys looking for small, lesser-known brands, he broached the subject with Handberry during a gym session and asked for his help. “Trevor has a lot of fashion sense,” Rubino said. “I liked the difference in our personalities and thought it would be a good blend.” So Handberry set out on a “Google journey,” he said, to find high quality brands that were not widely distributed.
Brands offered: The duo came up with a list of more than 500 potential brands and narrowed down the list to around 80 including Norman Russell and Ace Rivington denim, Mitchell Evans shirts, Malcolm Alexander suits, Radley Raven ties and Winding Wheel Supply belts. “Every item

LeBron James Wears A Safety Pin On The Cover Of Sports Illustrated

NBA star LeBron James graced the cover of Sports Illustrated’s December issue proudly bearing the title of Sportsperson of the Year ― and sporting what appears to be a safety pin on his lapel.

During any other time, the barely noticeable accessory would bear no significance. In 2016, however, the pin speaks volumes.

In the wake of President-elect Donald Trump’s win in November, the simple act of wearing a safety pin has become a political statement.

Trump, who has said he would ban all Muslims from entering the U.S., made sexist and insulting comments about women and racist comments about people of color in America, is a frightening prospect for many Americans who believe he is unfit for office. The safety pin movement is an attempt to show solidarity with anyone who might feel afraid.

Whether the Cleveland Cavaliers superstar is making a statement with the accessory, however, is unclear.

James was vocal about his political position during the 2016 presidential campaign, endorsing and campaigning with Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton. And just last week he refused to stay at a Trump hotel in New York ahead of a game against the Knicks.

However, he told reporters that his decision not to stay at the hotel was a matter of “personal preference,” not a political statement.

“At the end of the day, I hope he’s one of the best presidents ever, for all of our sakes ― for my family, for all of us.”

In the Sports Illustrated cover story, James spoke about his political activism, telling the magazine he looked up to people in positions of power during his childhood. “It could be athletes or actors or leaders, like presidents. I think parents could use some of those people as role models.

“But when we elect a president who speaks in a disrespectful way a lot, I don’t know that we can use him in our household.”

James told the magazine he’s not a fan of public protests, because “they can feel almost riotous sometimes.”

“I want it to be more about what I can do to help my community, what we can do so kids feel like they’re important to the growth of America … . I’m not here to stomp on Trump. We’re here to do our part, which starts in the place we grew up, street by street, brick by brick, person by person.”

Kerry James Marshall And The Limitless Power Of Black Paint

In his expansive retrospective spanning 35 years of work, Kerry James Marshall’s paintings range from urban pastorals to Renaissance-inspired portraits, subtly shifting abstractions to romanticized, domestic interiors. Yet regardless of style, substance or setting, the works converge on a single element: the undiluted blackness of their subjects’ flesh.

The vast majority of paintings that make up the Western art historical canon feature, of course, white subjects. Marshall’s painted world doesn’t only pass over these white subjects, his subjects’ skin features not a single splash of white paint. The artist’s formula for flesh features three shades of black: carbon black, mars black and ivory black. He will occasionally incorporate yellow and blue shades to round out the color, but no one figure in any painting is darker or lighter than another. Each exists outside a spectrum of shading or valuation; black is black.

Blackness is non-negotiable in those pictures,” Marshall explained in an October interview with T Magazine. “It’s also unequivocal — they are black — that’s the thing that I mean for people to identify immediately. They are black to demonstrate that blackness can have complexity. Depth. Richness.”

A breathtaking exhibition featuring 72 of Marshall’s works, titled “Kerry James Marshall: Mastry,” is now on view at the Met Breuer in New York City. The paintings reflect Marshall’s extensive command of Western art history to generate vivid representations of the African-American experience, past and present.

Marshall’s oeuvre is extraordinary in its ability to confront the injustices of art and American history head-on, while still celebrating the power and beauty of blackness. Its tenor contrasts with the rhetoric employed by president-elect Donald Trump, who has described African-Americans as “living in hell,” presenting a combination of optimism and activism that offers not hope but pride and productive vitality.

Marshall was born in 1955 in Birmingham, Alabama, and relocated with his family to the Los Angeles neighborhood of Watts in 1963, where they lived 12 blocks from the Black Panther headquarters. Growing up, Marshall witnessed many incidents of violence, though these traumatic experiences were scattered among happy memories of a loving family and happy home life, as well as the enchanting impact of art.

At 10 years old, Marshall visited the Los Angeles County Museum of Art for the first time and was mesmerized by what he encountered. “I went from floor to floor looking at everything, in the same way that in the library I went down the stacks and looked at every art book, without discrimination,” he told The New Yorker. Three years later, he took a summer drawing course at Otis College of Art and Design, where he would later attend art school, becoming the first in his family to go to college.

From his earliest encounters with art, Marshall was well aware of the dearth of black bodies represented in museum archives. Yet his reaction was not resentment but determination, to master the art historical trajectory that excluded black bodies and expertly incorporate them into it.

When you talk about the absence of black figure representation in the history of art,” Marshall said to T Magazine, “you can talk about it as an exclusion, in which case there’s a kind of indictment of history for failing to be responsible for something it should have been. I don’t have that kind of mission. I don’t have that indictment. My interest in being a part of it is being an expansion of it, not a critique of it.”

His dizzying array of art at the Met Breuer expands upon the shamefully limited scope of Western art history in myriad ways, too many to recount or even fully digest on a single visit. Yet one room addresses the issue of art history most straightforwardly, with a series of black painters depicted in the midst of creating their self-portraits.

The mythic artists, both male and female, meet the viewer’s gaze with regal composure and resolute solemnity. Donning sculptural hairstyles and voguish ensembles punctuated by dramatic collars and splashes of color, Marshall’s subjects seem aware of their statuses as works of art themselves. The paintings address the absence of black artists and black subjects simultaneously, while providing fictitious black artists the rare opportunity to depict their own image on their own terms.

The wall text reads: “The commanding presence of these figures is also an empowering one ― if you are an artist of color or if you are an artist who is a woman, the answer to the question, ‘What does an artist look like?’ might just be you.”

The self-portraits within the paintings, unfinished, rest propped up on easels in the backdrop. Closer examination reveals many of the canvases are paint-by-numbers, a craze popularized in the 1950s. As Holland Cotter wrote in his New York Times review of the exhibition: “It was a type of painting for anyone and everyone, universal in that way. And although the subjects were fixed, the colors were not.”

The paint-by-numbers canvasses implore those who wish to upheave racial bias in the art historical canon to do so by partaking in the universal practice of making art themselves. The activity-book-like format nods to the uncanny relationship between race and color, illuminating how simple it would be and has always been to dip a paintbrush in black paint instead of white. And yet even the painted figures have yet to render their self-portraits in their black likeness, as though even today the act of painting a black subject remains a radical act.

And yet, of course, Marshall has accomplished said act, over 70 times and counting. The 61-year-old artist, who was awarded the MacArthur Fellowship in 1997, shows up all day, every day, to his studio, where he paints sans assistants from morning until night.

The fact that Marshall’s retrospective is on view at The Met, of all places, is hugely significant. As Ian Alteveer, the Met curator who organized the exhibition along with Helen Molesworth and Dieter Roelstraete explained to The New York Times: “There are 5,000-plus years of art history here, and that’s the history he wants to be a part of and to paint to be a part of.”

Marshall’s depictions of black creativity and power extend beyond the art studio, depicting barber shops, public housing developments and intimate bedrooms. The retrospective is a remarkable achievement, a testament to Marshall’s knowledge, skill and spirit.

In response to an art historical narrative that failed to represent him, Marshall studied and mastered its shape. And in a composite visual language, weaved from threads of Théodore Géricault and Frank Stella, Giotto and Piet Mondrian, Marshall tells his story, the story of black America. A portrait, a love letter, a celebration, and a battle cry.

Kerry James Marshall: Mastry” is on view at The Met Breuer until Jan. 29, 2017.

James Corden Calls Out The Kardashians On Air After Kylie Cancels

Unfortunately for Kendall Jenner, James Corden keeps up with the Kardashians.

Jenner joined Corden’s show on Wednesday for a game of “Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts,” which is like truth or dare if every dare was eating something disgusting. The reality star was a good sport, ranking her nieces’ and nephews’ names from best to worst and drinking bird saliva instead of saying which member of the Taylor Swift squad was her least favorite.

I don’t know about you, but that’s what the squad do.

Then came the big question …

While Kendall was faced with the prospect of either answering a question or drinking clam juice, Corden said, “Your sister Kylie was supposed to be on our show tonight, but she canceled yesterday morning because she was sick. Yeah, she was sick.”

“Here’s a paparazzi photo of her,” said the host, showing a very recent picture of Kylie walking around.

From their reactions, Kris and Kendall Jenner probably weren’t expecting that.

“My question is, ‘How is she feeling?’” said Corden.

“Drink the clam juice!” Kris yelled.

Kendall did end up drinking the clam juice, so we’ll never know for sure how Kylie is feeling, but we’re going to guess she’s doing a little better than her sister:

First Nighter: James Earl Jones, Cicely Tyson Play “The Gin Game”; Oren Safdie’s Unseemly “Unseamly”

If you think you’re about to hear anything critical of the two old pros James Earl Jones and Cicely Tyson in director Leonard Foglia’s revival of D. L. Coburn’s 1977 comedy, The Gin Game, at the Golden Theatre, you better think again. As two lonely residents at a home for the aged who find comfort playing cards with each other in a rundown backyard, they’re well nigh perfect–which is what you already knew they would be.

It may be overstating it to say the characters they play both find comfort in the gin game. Tyson’s Fonsia Dorsey is very happy with the cards she dealt, because she’s the one declaring “Gin” just about every time, whereas Jones’s Weller Martin, the supposed expert at the game, never appears to have a fighting chance against her.

His card-playing prowess, only worsening as the two acts march on, is, of course what Fonsia and Weller discuss repeatedly, but they get around to other subjects as well. One topic is their families, who are either literal or figurative distances from them. The goings-on at the home is another ready topic, and when one of the dances underway inside moves them, they even dance. Needless to say, that’s a big audience-delighting development.

Weller, who can be loud and prone to anger when losing, has a habit of swearing. It’s a character trait Fonsia dislikes. So Coburn goes for laughs by eventually having her lose control of her tongue. Putting four-letter obscenities into the mouths of octogenarians–okay, nonagenarian in Tyson’s case–is a cheap trick but it works.

This is the third time the crowd-pleaser has adorned Broadway–Jessica Tandy and Hume Cronin, Julie Harris and Charles Durning preceded the current stars–and the play is no worse for wear. Whether it was ever a flawless piece of writing is less certain. It does have a second-act problem, which is that Coburn knows what to do with Fonsia and Weller up to a point and then doesn’t reckon how to take them further. By the time the second act ends, it’s become too much a repetition of the first.

In addition to Jones and Tyson, who do have the advantage of sitting for much of their on-stage time, there’s another truly standout production feature. It’s Riccardo Hernandez’s set. Along with a handy card table and a couple of chairs for the card players to occupy, he’s piled any number of discarded wheelchairs and walkers against the upstage wall.

Those are a constant reminder that though they were once used, their owners are no longer around. Somehow keeping death as a constant adds vitality to the energetic Jones and Tyson. Fonsia and Weller may not have that much longer to enjoy their gin game, but as played by Jones and Tyson, the pair is far from adding any discarded device to Hernandez’s stack.
******************
Sexual harassment has been a topic of conversation for some time, but whether Oren Safdie’s Unseamly, at Urban Stages, adds anything to the welter of current examinations is questionable.

In a play that slowly disintegrates into hysteria, Malina (Gizel Jimenez) has come to lawyer Adam (Tommy Schrider) in hopes he will convince his firm to take on her harassment case against Standard apparel company CEO Ira (Jonathan Silver), whose sometimes thoughtful and sometimes careless treatment of employees is well known. (Does Safdie have former American Apparel head honcho Dov Charney in mind as a model for Ira? Most likely.)

Initially, Adam listens to the lithe and sensual Malina objectively, attempting while he takes notes to have her describe incidents that would hold up in court as undeniable instances of harassment. As she tells her tales of being involved with Ira over an eight-month period, Adam hears nothing he finds solid evidence and initially dismisses her. But as Malina recounts her first interview with Ira, the shameless womanizer materializes, and while Adam continues taking notes on the sides of Brian Dudkiewicz’s clean-walled set, Ira and Malina reenact their past.

As they do, Unseamly slowly changes from a play about sexual harassment into a soft porn charade with sexual harassment as its handy peg. The more Malina, in time changing into a black lace outfit, shakes her booty even as Ira shakes his–there’s even a Malina-Ira dance break that Jimenez choreographed–the more lawyer Adam loses his objectivity and begins to get drawn into behavior less reflective of a professional keeping his law firm uppermost in his mind. Eventually, he shows signs of being as sexually compulsive as Ira, even down to talking at Ira’s breakneck speed.

As the audience discovers nothing in Malina’s saga that shows her as being anything but complicit in her interactions with Ira, Unseamly takes on the appearance of an overwrought screed about all men being helplessly licentious where women, no matter how agreeable they may or may not be, are concerned. The unpleasant irony is that Unseamly ends up exploiting exactly what it pretends to be exposing.

One thing definitely true of Unseamly is that the non-stop hyperactivity demands three actors speaking and moving indefatigably. As directed by Sarah C Carlsen, Jimenez, Schrider and Silver are up for every bit of that.

Ryan Reynolds’ Friend Tried To Sell Photos Of Baby James, And It Was Crushing

Ryan Reynolds experienced a betrayal of a particularly hurtful kind after the birth of his daughter, James.

“A guy that I’d known for my whole life, one of my closest friends growing up, he had been shopping pictures of my baby around,” Reynolds told GQ for the magazine’s latest issue. “I kind of got in front of it, which is good. But it was a slightly dark period. A bad couple of weeks.”

The “guy” was a close friend of Reynolds who he has known for 25 years.

“It was like a death. It was like one of those devastating things to find out,” he said, adding that the person did it for the money and didn’t think he’d get caught. “It was, like, so kind of shocking. There isn’t really a conversation to have. It’s just, ‘Oh, well, now I’m never going to see you or talk to you again, unfortunately.’ That’s kind of how it worked out.”

Fatherhood has been a life-changer for the “Deadpool” star, who welcomed James with wife Blake Lively last December.

“I’ve learned that an inordinate amount of clichés are completely true,” he added. “Like, there is this kid here that I would walk through fire for. Or, maybe not fire. Like, a very hot pavement, I’d walk through. A shag rug.”

Who Said it? Donald Trump or NBA Superstar Lebron James? The Answers Will Not Surprise You.

Presidential candidate and former Comedy Central Roastee Donald Trump has made multiple headlines this year for his repetitive racist and fascist-like remarks. His cartoonish rich-guy cliches have lent themselves to multiple satire articles. Some of them are better than others. What we’re getting at is that it’s harder than we had initially anticipated. Anyways, this is “Who Said It: Donald Trump or Lebron James?” You’ll probably get all of these right. They’re not that hard. Whatever. Here. Content.

“I will build the best wall, the biggest, the strongest, not penetrable, they won’t be crawling over it, like giving it a little jump and they’re over the wall, it will cost us trillions.”

Answer: Donald Trump

Pretty obvious right? Like it would be really weird for Lebron James to take such a radical stance on immigration during his run to 11 NBA All-Star selections. I guess it could feasibly happen, but it would be sort of out of character for him to actively try to appeal to the racist fears of Middle America out of nowhere.

“You know, God gave me a gift to do other things besides play the game of basketball.”

Answer: Lebron James.

Okay I guess technically Donald Trump could have said this. But realistically, the only time when this quote would make sense coming from him is if someone asked him “Donald, why aren’t you a professional basketball player?” Pretty specific question to ask him, given his reasons of notoriety, you know?

“Black guys counting my money! I hate it. The only kind of people I want counting my money are little short guys that wear yarmulkes every day.”

Answer: Donald Trump

Again, this shouldn’t really blow your mind. Lebron James himself is black, so it would be pretty nuts for him to say he’s super against black guys counting his money. I can’t say that I know he’s not an anti-semite, but I feel like he wouldn’t generalize all jewish people like that. It’d be pretty fucked up if he did. I mean he’s better than that, you know? You should be 3 for 3 right now.

“The Oscars were a great night for Mexico, and why not – they are ripping off the US more than almost any other nation.”

Answer: Lebron James. No just kidding it’s Trump again.

Can you imagine if Lebron James was the same guy, but just really hated Mexicans the same way Trump does? Like, a dominant point forward and NBA champion, but just REALLY fucking cannot stand Mexicans. That’d be so weird. Anyways, yeah, you should have gotten this one right too. Sorry. I wish this quiz could be harder. We just didn’t plan it out very well.

“I love Kobe. I love his competitive nature. I love competing against him. I talked to him before the season just to say it’s great to have him back”

Answer: Lebron James

Are we even fucking trying at this point? Yeah, obviously that’s a Lebron James quote. Okay well, we warned you. Article is over. Whatever. We tried.

Olsens to Bring Elizabeth and James In-house

IN THE OLSEN HOUSE: Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen have made the call to bring their Elizabeth and James label in-house for the first time since its 2007 launch. The licensee, Los Angeles-based Jaya Apparel Group, has produced the contemporary collection from the start. Founded in 1982, the 140-person West Coast conglomerate also manufactures the Olsenboye label, various Disney licenses, proprietary ones and various private labels.
The two-time Council of Fashion Designers of America women’s wear winners’ new setup with Elizabeth and James will be evident with the pre-fall/fall 2016 apparel collection.
The decision was purely contractual, as in one that has wound down, according to a spokeswoman for the designers and Jaya Apparel’s chief executive officer Jane Siskin. “It’s been an amazing eight years and we’ve enjoyed working with them immensely. We look forward to a great future for both parties,” Siskin said.
Known to be entrenched in The Row, Elizabeth and James and their other fashion ventures, the Olsens stand to become even more involved with the day-to-day operations of their secondary label.
