Beth Ditto Kicks Off Carnival Christmas at Galeries Lafayette

CARAMEL CARNY: Carnival life at Christmas, how stylish can it get? The answer from Beth Ditto came in the form of a bright silk dress, a huge, round hair bun — jet black — and her crystal-clear voice, strong enough to cut through thumping rock music in Galeries Lafayette.
The Parisian department store’s official theme this season is “Spectacular spectacular,” a chic and sugary rendition of the carny spirit of yesteryear.
First off, the red-carpet window unveiling with the group’s executive chairman Philippe Houzé; his son, the director of image and patronage Guillaume Houzé; and Haussmann flagship director Agnès Vigneron. Crowds jostling for a glimpse of the sparkly-heeled celebrity were also served colorful scenes of rotating toy carousels and ferris wheels in the windows behind the group.
The party quickly moved indoors, away from the brisk temperatures, past policemen in full riot gear — no, their costumes were not part of the show — and just beyond a giant red and white carousel display. Tucked between the horses, the red velvet, fur and studded handbags carry price tags in the 2,000 euro range and labels like Alaïa and Miu Miu.
The performance took place in the heart of the store, on a platform above

One For The Boys’ Fashion Ball Kicks Off LFW Men’s

BOYS IN BLUE: The dress code for the annual One For The Boys charity Fashion Ball was “black tie with a hint of blue,” in honor of the ribbon logo of the official London Fashion Week Men’s charity.
“Not really the right day for it, is it?” quipped one guest, apropos the U.K. election results which saw the Conservative “blue” party fail to achieve the margin of votes required to form a majority government.
That didn’t stop attendees from embracing the theme, with shades of cobalt, indigo, azure and cerulean appearing in pocket squares and bowties throughout the ballroom at the Landmark Hotel in Marylebone.
The charity, founded by Sofia Davis and chaired by Samuel L. Jackson, works to raise awareness and educate men about the signs and symptoms of male cancers to look out for encourage them to act quickly and speak up if something is amiss.

A ‘Drag Race’ Queen Kicks Off Pride By Re-Creating A Queer Classic

RuPaul’s Drag Race” contestant Alexis Michelle kicked off Pride month in the “gayest” way possible, teaming up with Broadway’s Andrew Keenan-Bolger for a spirited take on “Get Happy/Happy Days Are Here Again.”

The tune is a perfect pick for Pride, of course, given its history. In 1963, Judy Garland and a 21-year-old Barbra Streisand performed the duet on “The Judy Garland Show,” and it remains a staple of queer playlists 54 years later.

Michelle, 32, will return to New York nightspot Feinstein’s/54 Below June 13 for a special Pride installment of “It Takes A Woman… An Evening with Alexis Michelle.” The show, which features musical direction by Brandon James Gwinn, sees the drag queen tackling songs from Broadway musicals such as “Cabaret,” “Hello, Dolly!” and “La Cage aux Folles,” as well as hits by Streisand and Lady Gaga.

“I fell in love with theater when I was 5 years old,” Michelle, whose real name is Alex Michaels, told HuffPost in May. “The best I can do – as a gay man, a queer performer and a drag queen – is live my life honestly, openly and authentically, and let that authenticity be reflected in my performances. I really do believe that if we all live authentically, that behavior in and of itself has the power to change the world.”

Alexis Michelle stars in “It Takes A Woman… An Evening with Alexis Michelle” at Feinstein’s/54 Below in New York on June 13. Head here for details.

‘Country Nation World Tour’ Kicks Off in Morgantown, W.Va.

Folks in West Virginia find it easy to support Paisley because he’s what we call “good people.” He’s someone you would trust to watch your home while you’re on vacation, or take your child to the hospital in an emergency, or — even more important, here in the Mountain State — borrow your hunting dog for a day in the woods.

Paisley is a West Virginian through and through, and is definitely proud of being from this region of Appalachia. He kicked off the final leg of his “Country Nation World Tour” at the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown, W.Va., because the area just north of there where he grew up, in “Wheeling and Moundsville, is a very rich musical place.” It is, after all, home to the Jamboree, “the second most famous old-time radio country show,” Paisley said.

West Virginia residents were as thrilled to have Paisley back in town as he was to be here. People here are not just fans. They are rabid fans. They love Brad Paisley. That’s because Paisley loves people. You sense this when he performs, but after meeting him in person, you realize it’s not a performance — that wholesome goodness and warmhearted nature is not an act. It is simply who Brad Paisley is.

He is, in short, authentic. When he sees people, he really sees them. He doesn’t just give them a cursory glance. Not only did he thank the media for coming to talk to him before Saturday night’s show, Paisley also posed for a photo with each person there.

2015-01-22-BradDaleen.JPG

Friday night’s show opened with The SWON Brothers and Parmalee, but the audience was clearly waiting for Paisley–especially one little girl in the pit who looked to be four or so. Perched on her father’s shoulders, she had a neon pink sign, which Paisley held up so the camera could pan it for the audience. It read, “This is my first concert.” Paisley promptly handed her his signed guitar.

It didn’t seem possible Saturday’s show could be any better than the night before, but it was. There was the same high level of energy, the same videos playing on the Jumbotron, and the same selfies he took, but with different fans.

That night, Paisley read another sign from someone in the audience. Then he invited the man and his girlfriend onto the stage. After asking their names — which he announced as Craig and Alicia — Paisley told them to dance, as he serenaded them with the love song, “Then.”

In the middle of the song, Paisley stopped and told Craig to do what he planned, and as Craig got down on one knee, a collective gasp of delight was heard throughout the Coliseum. The camera zoomed in, showing Craig opening a black velvet box, then placing a ring on Alicia’s finger. It was, for every audience member there, like a dream come true. Where else would you see such a romantic moment but at a Brad Paisley concert?
