514-Lb. Woman Worries She Will Die Before Her 35th Birthday: ‘What Kind of Future Do I Have?’

At 514 lbs., Chrissy Dunham worries every day that she’s about to die.

The 30-year-old already struggles to walk, and doesn’t feel like she has much of a life.

“My weight has gotten so bad that everything hurts. My joints, my back, my shoulders, my feet and my legs,” Dunham says in this clip from Friday’s episode of The Doctors. “I’m not going to be able to maneuver for much longer.”

She says that her weight has “taken everything away” from her life.

“You want to be active and go out with your friends and do these things,” Dunham says, adding that instead, “you see your friends and family compromising to accommodate you, and you feel that burden.”

And with a body mass index of 80 — double what is considered morbidly obese — Dunham isn’t sure if she’ll make it to her 35th birthday.

“There’s so many nights that I lay there going, is this the night that I’m going to die?” she says. “There’s going to be a day when I’m just not there.”

Her mortality is why Dunham says she’s ready to make a change.

“I think the moment was, ‘Okay, I want to have a future,’ ” she says. “When your fear of getting better is just overwhelming, and where you can’t think that far in advance, because what kind of future do I have if I just keep going the way I’m going?”

With the help of Dr. Travis Stork and The Doctors, Dunham is ready for a weight loss intervention.

“I want to be a different person,” she says.

The Doctors airs weekdays nationwide. Check your local listings for times.

Why Carrie Underwood Went from Working Out 6 Days a Week to Just 1 or 2: ‘That Just Kind of Has to Be Okay’

Only made it to the gym twice this week? Then you and Carrie Underwood have something in common.

Though the superstar singer is known for her sculpted legs, she admitted Thursday that she isn’t working out as much as she used to.

“I used to work out six days a week,” Underwood, 34, told E!. “But now that’s a little rare, sometimes it’s one or two times a week and that just kind of has to be okay. And it is okay because whatever I’m doing that’s keeping me out of the gym is important.”

And the Nashville crooner certainly has plenty on her plate. Along with her music, Underwood has her Calia by Carrie Underwood activewear line and a busy life with her husband Mike Fisher, who just retired from the NHL after making it to the Stanley Cup Finals, and their 2-year-old son Isaiah.

Underwood says she makes family time a priority over the gym, but when she does get in a workout, it often becomes a family affair — especially when Isaiah crashes her workouts.

“He probably will, 90% of the time, wander into my workout session,” she said. “But it’s nice to be able to stop and give him a kiss.”

Fisher will join in too, but even the former professional athlete can’t keep up with Underwood.

“Mainly, when we work out together, we’re just working out in the same space,” she said. “But I will say, the other day I was doing the ab wheel … and later on that day, Mike said something like, ‘I’m not ready for the ab wheel yet.’ ”

And along with her ab routine, Underwood will do sprints and lunges in her hilly neighborhood.

“I do a lot of squats, I do a lot of lunges, I do a lot of curtsy lunges, I do a lot of goblet squats, I use the leg press machine,” she said.

For Evanna Lynch, Life After Luna Lovegood Is A Different Kind Of Magic

Earlier this year, Evanna Lynch ― the actress who got her start when she was cast at Luna Lovegood in the “Harry Potter” film series ― announced on Instagram that she was ready to take on new endeavors.

“I feel like I’m stuck in my 18-year-old self artistically when I actually have a lot more to say,” the actress wrote on Instagram, addressing her choice to move on from regularly attending “Harry Potter” conventions.

Now, just a few months later, she’s starring in a forthcoming play in London, an update on Edna Walsh’s “Disco Pigs,” a story about a pair of teens who speak in their own intimate, expressive language. Lynch says the play is in keeping with the types of roles she hopes to pursue in the future: bold characters and unabashed misfits.

Below, Lynch discusses her recent starring role in the indie film “My Name is Emily,” and why she can’t help but return to Hogwarts stories, which, she says, have a “resetting effect” on her.

First, I’d love to hear about  “Disco Pigs.” How did you get involved with the project?

I wanted to do theater for a while, but I only recently moved to London so I only had that opportunity for a while.

I loved the script; it was so different from anything I’d read before. The language is so strange and idiosyncratic. I find the story very romantic. It’s these two teenagers, and they have their own little world. I always connect to characters who do things their own way, and who don’t really set their standards by other people.

What for you was the biggest difference between stage acting and on-screen acting?

On-screen it’s nice because you get to film over a long period of time. Stage is different because ― for this play, anyway, it’s only an hour. Whereas on film you mull with it, you know, a month to six weeks, probably six to eight weeks, you’re with the character every single day, obsessed with them, thinking of them.

[In theater] you’re running on adrenaline. There’s a lot of fear. That aspect you don’t have in film, which is nice, it takes the pressure off.

You also had a fairly recent film that was released in the U.S. this year, “My Name is Emily.” This was your first starring role in a film. How was that experience different from your past work?

For one thing it was an independent movie, so there were a lot fewer resources. More responsibility, which I find very exciting. I felt like I was more of a collaborator. And I don’t know if that’s just about the position I was in, or if that’s my age. Because when I started the “Potter” films I was 14, I was more of a child, and on “My Name Is Emily,” that was the first time I was a collaborating artist. That was really exciting.

I just focused on the work. I’m not trying to make friends with everyone. I’ve seen with other films, the central cast member will try to really welcome everyone and I thought about that, but it’s just not me. I’m quite shy, I’m quite introverted, I like to sit and watch people. I feel like that’s how I learn about people, how I study them. So, it wasn’t a whole lot different for me. Yes, there was added pressure, but you have to do everything you can to not think about the pressure.

I think I went through most of primary school and high school just feeling like I hadn’t really met my people, and “Harry Potter” felt like my people. They were the kind of friends I wanted to have.
Evanna Lynch

By the time you were cast as Luna you were already a fan of the “Potter” books. What did you love most about the books?

I just loved it because it really felt like I understood the people ― the teenagers. I just felt like they were my friends. I loved that it was just like a bunch of misfits, and they were the heroes of the story. And I’d never read a book series before where the characters were so relatable, and inspiring in how relatable they were. I felt what they were doing, and what they were grappling with. The books just had this amazing ability to make me feel not alone. And I think I went through most of primary school and high school just feeling like I hadn’t really met my people, and “Harry Potter” felt like my people. They were the kind of friends I wanted to have.

Of course it was also a more fascinating world than what I was involved in. It just made me believe in things that were different.

I actually read Prisoner of Azkaban around Christmastime. I had a craving for it; I don’t know why. I often do press events and conventions, and I get asked a lot of questions. It was a point of pride that I was like a walking encyclopedia for the books. And I realized my trivia had been slipping the last few years. I was like, oh, this can’t fall away. This is something I need to maintain.

It’s just me being a nerd. The books almost have a resetting effect on me. They bring me back to who I am. And the films are sort of different because it became a career, and it’s so entwined with who I am as a public figure, which I don’t want to think about when I’m reading. The books still remind me of who I am.

Do you have a favorite “Potter” character besides Luna?

I always liked Dumbledore because he’s so wise, and he’s got such a deep mind and thinks so deeply on things, but he’s also able to enjoy the finer things in life. I like that.

And then recently I realized I really like [Gilderoy] Lockhart. I sort of admire that obliviousness he has. He doesn’t seem to be aware of what people think of him, or that not everyone wants his autograph. I think I’m probably too self-conscious. Not in an insecure way, but I have this paranoid thing where I’ll often think people are giving me a weird look or something. My best friend always points it out, he’s like, really, it’s not about you. […] My mind makes up weird stories, and I started to really love Lockhart for how he doesn’t do that. He does the opposite. He assumes everyone loves him. I just think it’s so funny.

The films […] became a career, and it’s so entwined with who I am as a public figure, which I don’t want to think about when I’m reading. The books still remind me of who I am.

I want to ask about your activist work. It seems that you use your platform to promote your causes ― especially veganism. Do you foresee yourself trying for roles that promote your political message?

For me, art can be political, but I don’t think you should force it. I think the best way to make people feel is just story for the sake of story.

I mean, I do often think about maybe working on a book or something like that, told from the animals’ eyes. The stories that really inspired me to be vegan ― well, vegetarian first, and then vegan ― and just to care about animals in the first place, were things like watching “Babe,” or watching “Chicken Run.” That, I think, is a very powerful tool. Other than that I do like to keep activism and art separate. I think if you try too hard for it to be worthy and have a message, it just ― I think it poisons it a little bit. Or, not poisons, but it loses its integrity.

Even books like “Harry Potter,” I don’t feel like it’s trying to force it down our throats that like, fascism is bad, but you pick up those things by osmosis of what the characters feel. Those kinds of stories have a much more powerful effect on me personally.

What would you say you’re looking for most in acting roles going forward?

Bold characters. I always look up to people who are very unapologetic. Whether their morals are in line with mine ― say for example, the character in “Disco Pigs.” She has no moral compass, really. She’s 17, for one thing. But they’re always eating sausages, they don’t give a damn. I didn’t see that as a reason not to admire her, because obviously that’s her blind spot, but what I liked about her was that she was so sure of what she was doing, such a unique person, such an individual. That’s what it is in characters. I just want to find something individual, something about them that makes them an outsider, and that encourages me to be more that way. Because I think if I’m around other people I tend to want to fit in. I think characters in books and in movies that are complete individuals and who are not apologizing for it, they remind me to be myself. That’s why I like the character Luna Lovegood so much. I just want to have more of that energy.

From June 1 to 30, HuffPost is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the very first “Harry Potter” book by reminiscing about all things Hogwarts. Accio childhood memories.

The Rock Announced His 2020 Presidential Bid On ‘SNL’ (Kind Of)

One of the most likable men in Hollywood may have just announced his presidential bid for 2020.

After weeks of teasing a run for the presidency, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson told America “I’m in” during the season finale of “Saturday Night Live” this weekend. The pro wrestler-turned-actor said he was officially running for president starting that night, right after Alec Baldwin awarded him his Five-Timers Club velvet jacket, to mark Johnson’s fifth time hosting the show.

“In the past, I never would have considered running for president. I mean, I didn’t think I was qualified at all,” Johnson joked. “But now I’m actually worried that I’m too qualified.”

Johnson also took the time to announce his running mate: the equally likable celebrity Tom Hanks.

The charming duo made their case for why they are the perfect picks to lead the United States of America ― and they were fairly convincing.

“The truth is, America needs us,” Hanks said. “No one can seem to agree on anything anymore except for two things: pizza and us.”

Hanks joked that the duo would get 100 percent of the vote because Hanks ― who’s “fought in World War II in like 10 different movies” ― would win the senior vote.

“And I, of course, would get the minority vote,” Johnson added. “Because everyone just assumes that I’m, well, whatever they are.”

Johnson delighted fans this month when he discussed his political ambitions in a GQ profile and called a presidential campaign “a real possibility.” A national poll suggested that Johnson could potentially win against President Donald Trump if he ran as a Democrat in the 2020 presidential election.

The actor later said in the monologue that he and Hanks were only joking, but then he offered a few words of patriotic encouragement.

“When it comes to politics, we need more poise and less noise,” Johnson said. “Americans deserve strong, capable leaders ― leaders who care about this country and care about its people.”

To which Hanks replied, “Uh, Dwayne, that kind of sounds like you and me.”

Then, with their hands held high, the two national treasures dropped their campaign banner and yelled, “We’re doing it!”

So is Johnson/Hanks 2020 really happening? Only time will tell.

Lyft made these goofy wearables as a prank but they're actually kind of cool

Lyft made these goofy wearables as a prank but they're actually kind of coolWould you believe it if Lyft rolled out an actual, physical product to hail a ride? A one-use wearable, giving you streamlined access to all the service's cars at the lyft (lolz) of your thumb? You shouldn't believe it — well, not completely. The ride-hailing app is currently shilling Mono, a wearable with some legitimately cool specs: it has BLE tech to pair with your phone, a micro-controller synched with the Lyft API that reads gyroscope and accelerometer data to request rides, and motion-triggered LED confirmation indicators to let you know your trip status without having to check your phone.   Just stick your thumb in the air wearing the Mono, Lyft claims, and you'll soon be ferried on your way.  SEE ALSO: Lyft just came out with its biggest innovation yet: buses But you'll (probably) never see someone rocking a Mono to get a ride home after a night out on the town — it's April Fools' Day season again, and the wearable is Lyft's idea of a viral prank, designed to confound the internet and get us all buzzing. The only problem is, Lyft didn't just make a joke prototype for a one-off photoshoot — the company went all the way in, creating actual working Mono devices.  Sure, we have all the hallmarks of a viral prank campaign — a slightly ridiculous concept that's
just believable enough, especially with the hyped-up videos and web presence to back it up. But bringing Mono to life makes it less a prank and more a one-off promotion, like Pizza Hut's pie-ordering sneakers for March Madness.  We're giving away 5 Monos! Post a photo of the Mono on Twitter/Instagram tagging @lyft, #GetMono, and #Sweepstakes. https://t.co/O58NUdhPSh pic.twitter.com/jb4ZjqYaIY — Lyft (@lyft) March 30, 2017 It's almost like Snapchat Spectacles on a small scale: a wearable created to give users a physical extension of an experience typically tethered to smartphones. Mono's little more than a novelty item — obviously, no one's
really gonna walk around with their thumb in the air more than once or twice for kicks — but it is kinda cool looking and, dare I say it, fun.  That's what April Fool's is all about, right? We'll cut Lyft some slack here for the full-out effort even with the botched delivery — just as long as they don't immediately start bragging about how #woke hailing a car with your thumb can be.  WATCH: I tried a self-driving car in London and lived to tell the tale

Radiohead’s Coachella Set Was Kind Of A Disaster

The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival got off to a rough start on Friday night, as Radiohead’s set was chock-full of technical issues that forced the band to walk off stage multiple times.

The Friday-night headliner got through a few songs from their newest album, “A Moon Shaped Pool,” to start the set before the main festival speakers cut out during “Ful Stop.” To make matters more awkward, the band’s in-ear monitors continued to work, so they played on unaware that no one could hear them.

Radiohead experiences technical difficulties during “Ful Stop”

After that, the band reportedly made it through “Airbag” from the “OK Computer” album. But the audio issues returned for most of “15 Step,” causing the band to eventually leave the stage.

Frustrated festival-goers, who paid hundreds of dollars for tickets, could only stand in silence and anger looking at a dark stage. When the band returned, so did the audio issues, and the band had to leave the stage for a second time, according to Variety.

Sound keeps cutting out during #radiohead at coachella #someonesgettingfired

A post shared by Lyndsey Parker (@lyndseyparker) on

Can you actually hear me now?” Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke had to ask at one point. “I’d love to tell you a joke, lighten the mood, something like that. But this is Radiohead, so f**k it.”

Luckily, the end of the set sounds like it went rather well. And hey, they even played “Creep” later on. So it’s not all bad. Let’s just hope the same thing doesn’t happen during Kendrick Lamar’s scheduled performance on Sunday night.

‘SNL’ Just Identified The Worst Kind Of Male Feminist

Saturday Night Live” just exposed the worst kind of liberal: dudes who use activism to pick up chicks.

In a digital short titled “Girl at a Bar,” Cecily Strong gets hit on by a series of men who are eager to talk about feminism. All seems to go well until Strong’s character, who’s wearing a shirt that says “The future is female,” turns each guy down.

Beck Bennett points out that he and Strong are wearing matching shirts, but turns on her when she rejects his offer for a date. “OK, bitch,” Bennett screams. “I wore this shirt and you won’t even let me nut? I followed all the rules!”

Things seem to get better when Kyle Mooney pulls the screaming man away and tells Strong he was just in D.C. for the Women’s March, saying “it was honestly one of the best days of my life.”

But when Strong turns him down too, Mooney unleashes his wrath.

“I freaking marched for you. You won’t get down on this?” he yells while grabbing his crotch.

Even Alex Moffat in a pink pussy hat can’t seem to get it right. He name-drops Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), then presents Strong with a very disgusting offer.

After “SNL” scored its highest ratings in years by picking apart President Donald Trump’s administration, it seems like the show decided it was time to make fun of the left too.

And creepy, fake feminist men are a hilarious start.

Alexander Stutterheim Builds an Unusual Kind of Luxury Brand in Sweden

In fashion, Sweden has fostered notable names such as Acne Studios, H&M and Nudie Jeans. According to Alexander Stutterheim, the cofounder of contemporary raincoat brand Stutterheim, the Scandinavian country has yet to give birth to a luxury label on par with Hermès and Margiela. He’s taken on the mission to rectify that, offering his hand-knit sweaters from his Stockholm apartment, where he has fulfilled custom orders with in-the-know shoppers, to boutiques for the first time next fall.
Slated to exhibit at Paris’ Man trade fair in January, John Sterner: Swedish Knitology is set to wholesale chunky fisherman sweaters knit by hand from ecological wool and introduce new styles, in Merino wool and cashmere, as well as accessories such as scarves, beanies, socks and gloves.
Made in a week by a grandmotherly knitter in the south of Sweden and numbered with a leather tag like a work of art, the fisherman sweater, dubbed Antidote, retails for $ 1,050. Stutterheim sees the possibility of growing the brand on the potential of the cashmere sweaters and the Merino knits, which sell for about $ 900 and $ 300, respectively. The accessories start at $ 30 for socks and fingerless gloves and go up to $ 80 for hats. Made by

This Is The Kind Of Bullsh*t You Face As A Woman In The Music Industry

With the help of women on Twitter, a music critic has shed light on an uglier aspect of the industry she works in.

Jessica Hopper, music and culture critic and senior editor at Pitchfork, sparked a conversation on Twitter when she asked women and “other marginalized folks” among her almost 28,000 followers when they first felt like they “didn’t ‘count'” in the music industry.

What came after was a disturbing look at what women face in the industry as Twitter users shared their experiences of sexism and misogyny. Many who are musicians, journalists, photographers and crew members explained that they were often not taken seriously and frequently mistaken for groupies or girlfriends.

Others highlighted the crude comments and casual sexism they experienced on a daily basis.

The most unsettling examples of misogyny came from Twitter users who bravely spoke up about being sexually assaulted, and the troubling reactions they received afterwards.

Though the majority of the responses highlighted sexism in the music and journalism industries, Hopper’s tweet also motivated others to share their experience with sexism in other fields and with racial stereotypes. Since receiving so much feedback, Hopper has shifted the conversation and asked women about their accomplishments in the music industry and other fields using the hashtag #WomenInMusic.

Considering the obstacles they overcame for these accomplishments, these women deserve a round of applause.

Five Reasons Vintage Clothing Is Not Just “Old Used Clothes” (Even Though It Kind of Is)

As the owner of the online vintage clothing shop Rococo Vintage, I have been working closely with vintage and antique garments for quite some years now. Even before founding my own shop, I spent the bulk of my teen years scouring thrift and vintage stores for treasures, and then the end of my teen years as the assistant to a now very successful LA-based vintage clothing seller.

I was raised in a Victorian house in New England, surrounded by antique furniture and skeleton keys and ancient table linens, and I suppose all that early exposure to, well, “a whole lot of old stuff,” left an imprint on my heart and my mind. I love the character of vintage clothing, the specialness, the whimsy. Unfortunately, many people just see the garments — no matter how valuable or glorious — as nothing more than “old used clothes.” Here are five reasons that just simply isn’t so.

2015-01-08-vintagelineupme.jpg

Me, wearing some “old stuff” while getting ready for a vintage show.
(fyi, this is basically the vintage gal’s version of a bathroom selfie.)

1. The quality. The quality of vintage clothing is simply unmatched by that of contemporary clothing, with the exception only of today’s highest end luxury designers. Before the 1970’s when polyester first became king, and especially before the early 1960’s, clothing was constructed to last. The end game with fashion was quality over quantity, for reasons both financial and cultural, and it is not uncommon to find luxurious details like French seams, generous hems, and exquisitely crafted buttons on even the most basic of older vintage garments. These days, even dresses that cost hundreds of dollars boast barely a millimeter of extra fabric, and a quick look at the interior of these garments reveals that regardless of the quality of the design, they were constructed with heightened attention paid to saving the manufacturer money. These days clothing is cheaper to make but not always cheaper to own, and it is only by wearing vintage that a person has the chance to experience true luxury construction (think, Chanel) at a less-than-luxury price. There is nothing as flattering as an artfully crafted garment. Plus, all that extra fabric on the inside of vintage clothing means that it is much easier to have it tailored to fit you perfectly. How great is that?!

2015-01-08-vintagelineup4.jpg

Dresses from the 1930’s, 1920’s, and 1950’s, respectively. Look at those details!
They just don’t make ’em like they used to.

2. The uniqueness. When you invest in a vintage garment, you can rest assured that you will never walk into a room to find another person wearing the same thing you are (except by the greatest-ever case of vintage-lightning striking twice.) The most special vintage is entirely unique and bursting with whimsical details that cannot be accurately reproduced; the prints, the pintucks, the buttons… there just isn’t anything like them. This is a big part of the reason why so many celebrities have become such big fans of vintage clothing, as they know that they will easily stand out from everyone else on the red carpet with no concern of winding up in a “Who Wore it Best” column. There is something to be said for owning and wearing something that just about nobody else in all the world owns or can wear (and in the case of custom-made vintage garments, of which there are many, absolutely nobody else in the world does or can.) Every garment is a treasure!

2015-01-07-taylorforhufpost.jpg

Taylor Swift, who is a big fan of vintage clothing,

3. The stories you hear. Whether or not you are able to discover it, every vintage garment comes with a story. Little is more exciting than being able to trace the origin of a garment — known as the “provenance” — and to be able to conjure up wonderful images of its past life. Even in cases when you cannot find any details beyond where you yourself came across a piece, it takes only a drop of imagination to create those special stories yourself. Vintage and antique clothing is seeped in mystery and history, and learning or dreaming it is half the charm of wearing it. Of course, this is one of the things that some non-vintage-fans object to, as I suppose it takes a certain kind of person to want to think about who wore something before you did, but if you already do or can learn to love it, I cannot tell you how much excitement it brings to simply getting dressed in the morning. It’s rather like having a bunch of wonderful imaginary friends hanging out in your closet!

2015-01-07-dee02c14475d006b6020d69d8fab99c3.jpg

Who was this young woman? Was this her favorite dress? Did she meet her soulmate while wearing it? Was she a painter? A poet? A professional wartime code breaker? These are the kinds of questions you find yourself asking and wondering about (and loving to ask and wonder about!) when you wear vintage clothing. Photo of unknown girl, c. 1940’s.

4. The people you meet. With absolutely no intention of patting my own back (I swear!) vintage sellers are some of the most fascinating people I have ever met. Whether they own vintage shops, sell at flea markets, or are selling their own or a relative’s old wardrobes, they are people with a great love and respect for what they are doing. It takes a special kind of non-historian historian to be a part of the “vintage world,” and the perspective of vintage sellers is often an entirely unique one. In addition to the sellers themselves, when you wear vintage you find yourself making friends just about everywhere you go. Anytime I wear a vintage or antique piece, I find myself being stopped on the street or approached in line at coffee shops by someone wanting to inquire about what I’m wearing. I’ve even made friends this way! There is certainly something (or a lot) to be said for having the freedom to wander about in jeans and T-shirts or yoga pants and sweatshirts when you want to, but there is also something very special about dressing in a way that reaches out to others without your having to say a word. Vintage clothing is wonderfully nostalgic and invites meaningful conversation in ways that modern clothing just doesn’t.

2015-01-08-vintagelineuprodellee.jpg

With my good friend Rodellee Bas of AdoredVintage, who is one of many friends I’ve made thanks to a mutual love of vintage clothing.

5. The clothing has a soul. Vintage clothing is more than just “old used clothes.” It is more than new unworn clothes. It is history, and art, and the stories of those who have come before us. Owning and wearing vintage clothing is a way of keeping those people and those histories and that artistry alive. At the end of the day, to wear vintage clothing is to be wrapped in romance. Vintage clothing is simply special. It just is.

This Is The Kind Of BS That Women In Television Have To Deal With, Part 2

Former CNN anchor Kiran Chetry and PBS’ Judy Woodruff spoke out on Sunday’s “Reliable Sources” about the way women in television are scrutinized over their appearance.

The discussion came after recent reports that executives at Britain’s ITV have criticized host Susanna Reid over her dresses, hair and nodding in an attempt to boost ratings. On Sunday, Chetry seemed to be able to relate to the story as she listed some of the feedback she’s received about her looks during her career in television. The former anchor, who previously worked in local news and for Fox News and CNN, said she has been told to:

— buy a wig

— don’t wear bare arms

— don’t wear taupe

— dye your hair blond

— wear shorter skirts

— wear longer skirts

— get Botox

Chetry said that she has “laughed” and taken the advice with a grain of salt over the years, while Woodruff added that getting the news out and focusing on the content of stories should be a journalist’s first priority.

“I think women have to take a deep breath and think, ‘What am I doing here? Am I here to be a reporter, to gather the news, to make sure it gets out and do the best job I can?'” she said. “If that’s what you’re trying to do, that’s what ultimately is going to matter.”

Burt Waikiki Brings Hawaii Lifestyle To South Africa… Kind Of

What do you get when you combine viral online marketing with Hawaii’s laid back lifestyle? Apparently, Burt Waikiki.

Burt is a long-haired, speedo-clad, womanizing personal trainer from the Hawaii island of Kauai whose mission is to share his secret to balancing mind, body and soul by flirting with women and lifting weights made of coconuts. Oh, and apparently he saves puppies, which makes sense because why not?

bw

Also known as “The Guru of Goodness,” Burt is the star of a new viral marketing campaign launched by digital agency McCann and Kauai restaurants — a chain of Hawaii-inspired health food restaurants in South Africa.

The campaign’s purpose is to introduce the world to the “Kauai lifestyle.” This includes “healthy eating, being active and having time to chill,” according to Kauai’s marketing manager Leanne Jefferies.

“Even though the islands are far away, there is no excuse for us not to live by these principals in South Africa,” Jefferies told AdLip.com. “Our brand heritage is fun, informal and laid back. So we wanted to do a fun campaign.”

burtwaikiki

While the campaign’s efforts aim at promoting the island lifestyle, it’s clear that the videos are mostly for comedy rather than accuracy. Kauai’s residents do have a very strong voice when it comes to community health and the Aloha State actually does embrace yoga, but not everyone has a parachute to casually land on the beach or a “palace” on the sand with fake flower leis strewn about.

We’re also pretty sure that “scubaerobics” isn’t really a thing.

The original concept for Kauai restaurants began 17 years ago when the founders, originally from California, experienced life on the island of Kauai. Or, as they put it, “discovered the succulent fruits of this veritable Garden of Eden.”

What still remains unclear, however, is why the laid back, zen-seeking guru, Burt Waikiki, is named after one of Hawaii’s busiest and crowded cities, which isn’t even on the island of Kauai.
