The Dark Knight 10th Anniversary Gets Special 70MM IMAX Release

To commemorate the 10-year anniversary of Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, Warner Bros. is bringing it to IMAX screens for one week only.

The Dark Knight will be screened across four select IMAX theatres in LA, New York, San Francisco and Toronto, with the aim to showcase its utilization of IMAX 70mm film and massive scale. Four of The Dark Knight’s major sequences were shot with IMAX cameras, including the Joker’s opening bank robbery, and Nolan has gone on to use IMAX cameras in his subsequent films.

Warner Bros. says the IMAX screening is intended to give the public a look at The Dark Knight as it was meant to be seen. Tickets for the opening day go on sale this Friday, July 20th. Showtimes are currently only announced for August 24th, but subsequent screening dates will be announced closer to release.

Hollow Knight Has Sold More Than 1 Million Copies on PC

Hollow Knight has apparently been quite the success for developer Team Cherry. Speaking with Kotaku, co-director Ari Gibson revealed the Metroidvania game surpassed 1 million sales on PC after launching just over a year ago.

“Hollow Knight’s success has in large part been driven by

many fans on PC, with the game having now sold over 1 million copies for Windows, Mac,

Linux (crossing that mark just

day before the Nintendo Switch launch),” said Gibson, referring to Hollow Knight’s June 12 Switch release.

Just last week, Team Cherry revealed that Hollow Knight had reached 250,000 sales on Switch in its first two weeks on the Nintendo system. Combined with PC, that puts the game at over 1.25 million total copies sold across both platforms.

Andy Cohen, Sherri Shepherd and More Stars Remember Project Runway’s Mychael Knight: ‘Gone Too Soon’

Hollywood has a lot of love for the late Mychael Knight.

The former Project Runway and Project Runway: All Stars contestant died Tuesday morning outside Atlanta. He was 39.

In the wake of his death, several stars took to social media to commemorate the late fashion designer, including his good friend and celebrity client Sherri Shepherd.

“My heart hurts so much today bc I lost my friend, my little brother @mychaelknight,” she wrote on Instagram. “I was a fan of Mychael’s since I first saw him on #ProjectRunway & when @jawnmurray finally put us together, it was a match made in #heaven. We clicked immediately & Mychael said he was going to be my stylist for the long haul. He had a wicked sense of humor and was the most creative man I knew.”

“Mychael had a sixth sense when it came to styling women,” she continued. “He brought out the best of your features and I always felt like a princess when he styled me. Mychael taught me that Spanx is a girl’s best friend and Lord help me if someone took a pic of me & I wasn’t red carpet ready. I respected his business acumen, his honesty and integrity. When he said he wanted to collaborate w me on a curvy line of clothing for women, I thought we’d struck gold.”

Shepherd, 50, revealed the pink blush gown she was wearing in the photo she posted was custom-designed by Knight for the Daytime Emmy Awards — and he sewed it in 24 hours.

“Mychael how I wish your dreams weren’t cut short — but so thankful for the time I was allowed to be a part of your life,” she concluded. “I know you are in #heaven updating the angels’ wardrobe (‘Lord! Wings are so 90s!’) I love you my friend #RIP #alwaysafan.”

Bravo’s Andy Cohen, who was an executive at the network when Project Runway first began, expressed his condolences and memories of Knight on Twitter, writing, “I am so sad to hear about Mychael Knight. When he appeared on #ProjectRunway he was the sweetest guy, full of life, ambition & talent. #rip.”

Singer/songwriter Keri Hilson also remembered her “dear old friend.”

“Ur such a beautiful spirit,” she wrote. “I cherish ur humble creative nature. One of the good ones, gone too soon.”

“I will always remember the feeling…you were the first to create a dress for lil ole me back in ’04. I cherish you & treasure this dress…” she continued. “We believed in each other before all the fame & attention…saw each other’s visions & genuinely supported one another. #RIPMychaelKnight. Sending love & prayers to every friend & family member. I know you will be missed by all who were blessed to know you.”

Knight’s family confirmed his death in a statement to Obvious magazine.

“We are still processing the untimely death of our son, brother, friend, and uncle,” they said. “Mychael meant everything to us and we loved him dearly. He was generous and so full of life. This is how we choose to remember his legacy.”

Knight died on Tuesday after recently checking into a hospital for treatment for intestinal issues, TMZ reported.

Born in Germany, Knight divided his childhood between Alabama and New York. He studied Apparel Design and Merchandising at Georgia Southern University, graduating in 2001.

Knight first auditioned for the second season of Project Runway in 2005 but didn’t make the cut. When he auditioned again the following year, he was named one of the season 3 contestants and went on to place fourth in the overall competition, winning season 3’s Fan Favorite award.

After leaving the show, Knight launched his own label, Mychael Knight, and returned to Project Runway multiple times over the years, competing in a 2009 All-Star Challenge, as well as a starring as a contestant on the third season of the show’s All Stars spin-off in 2013.

Throughout his career, he continued to release new collections. His Spring/Summer 2018 line was his most recent.

Gareth Pugh And Nick Knight Screen Emotional “Non-Fashion” Film

HIGH ANXIETY: Gareth Pugh eschewed a show this season in favor of a film, directed by Nick Knight and screened at IMAX in London to an audience that had to run the gauntlet of aggressive anti-fur protestors to enter the venue.
The anxiety caused by that arrival set adrenaline at an appropriate level for the on-screen drama.
“I didn’t want to make a fashion film; I wanted to make something that went a lot deeper and was more emotional,” Pugh said.
In fact, the opening scenes were more akin to the horror genre than the slick and stylized visuals the audience was expecting. The film opens with two besuited men, the designer was one of them, disfiguring each other’s faces and bodies with mud and paint in an unsettling way that evoked the darker works of Francis Bacon. The violent and perverse scene ends with Pugh naked and splayed on a table, covered in mud, the other man literally ripping apart his clay body.
The film progresses through scenes of dancers, choreographed by Wayne McGregor: a figure spinning in a dramatically high-collared coat, and eye-less models in hard metal gowns. The palette moves through grays to black, red, gold and white as the film lightens

ORG It was a bright morning in the month of August, when a lad of some fifteen years of age, sitting on a low wall, watched party after party of armed men riding up to the castle of the Earl of Evesham. A casual observer glancing at his curling hair and bright open face, as also at the fashion of his dress, would at once have assigned to him a purely Saxon origin; but a keener eye would have detected signs that Norman blood ran also in his veins, for his figure was lither and lighter, his features more straightly and shapely cut, than was common among Saxons. His dress consisted of a tight-fitting jerkin, descending nearly to his knees. The material was a light-blue cloth, while over his shoulder hung a short cloak of a darker hue. His cap was of Saxon fashion, and he wore on one side a little plume of a heron. In a somewhat costly belt hung a light short sword, while across his knees lay a crossbow, in itself almost a sure sign of its bearer being of other than Saxon blood. The boy looked anxiously as party after party rode past toward the castle. “I would give something,” he said, “to know what wind blows these knaves here. From every petty castle in the Earl’s feu the retainers seem hurrying here. Is he bent, I wonder, on settling once and for all his quarrels with the Baron of Wortham? or can he be intending to make a clear sweep of the woods? Ah! here comes my gossip Hubert; he may tell me the meaning of this gathering.

The Tavern Knight

The Tavern Knight

The Tavern Knight is an historical novel, set in England during the English Civil War in the 17th Century, written by Rafael Sabatini, and published in 1904. It is his second novel. The story revolves around Sir Crispin Galliard, a disreputable knight, whose son was killed 18 years before and whose estate was stolen. He goes after the people who stole his estate and to seek vengeance. This story has the usual adventure, history, romance, and treachery for which Rafael Sabatini’s novels are known. According to Wikipedia, “Rafael Sabatini (April 29, 1875 – February 13, 1950) was an Italian/British writer of novels of and adventure. Rafael Sabatini was born in Jesi Italy, to an English mother and Italian father. His parents were singers who became teachers. he was the master of five languages. He quickly added a sixth language – English – to his linguistic collection. He consciously chose to write in his adopted language, because, he said, “all the best stories are written in English.” After a brief stint in the business world, Sabatini went to work as a writer. He wrote short stories in the 1890s, and his first novel came out in 1902. It took Sabatini roughly a quarter of a century of hard work before he attained success with Scaramouche in 1921. The novel, a historical romantic set during the French Revolution, became an international best-seller. It was followed by the equally successful Captain Blood in 1922. All of his earlier books were rushed into reprints, the most popular of which was The Sea Hawk from 1915. Sabatini was a prolific writer; he produced a new book approximately every year, and maintained a great deal of popularity with the reading public through the decades that followed.

‘Batman: Arkham Knight’ May Be Game Of The Year — But There’s One Big Problem

Batman attempts to deactivate an exploding collar on Catwoman in “Arkham Knight.”

Months after GamerGate first set video game culture ablaze with unbelievable resistance to the idea of feminist perspectives in the gaming industry, we have a new title that features some of the most compelling female characters in pop culture. “Batman: Arkham Knight,” which came out Tuesday, spotlights Poison Ivy, Catwoman, Oracle and Harley Quinn in major roles. But while these women are often represented as strong, independent and able in other media, their featured roles here often tell a different story: They are damsels in distress.

Many, many people will play this game, if previous entries are any indication. The last main title in the series, which has a couple of spinoffs, sold over 5 million copies. And that aside, “Arkham Knight” is actually an exceptional game taken on its own merits: It is devoted to a cohesive aesthetic and narrative in a way few other games are, the set pieces are compelling and it’s brimming with things to do. One moment you’ll be studying the microscopic details of a crime scene, and five minutes later you’re dodging drone fire in the middle of a populated city street. It all feels crunchy and good.

“Arkham Knight” will likely earn accolades as one of the standout titles of the year — it already holds a 91 on Metacritic — and that is precisely why its sins should not be ignored.

(Note: The text that follows contains some spoilers for the storyline in “Arkham Knight.”)

poison ivy
Poison Ivy appears in “Arkham Knight” with a barely-there shirt and a mossy crotch.

It’s really no big secret that gaming and tech are male-dominated industries, even if consumers are split basically down the middle in terms of gender. Plenty of people will play “Arkham Knight” and probably ignore its oftentimes troubling presentation of women — perhaps that’s simply because the game is exciting, and as soon as you settle into a moment, something explodes and you’re off to something else.

But others will play the game and feel offended. Or disgusted. Or threatened. Or simply unwelcome. Even if those people were outnumbered 100 to 1 in a population of 5 million customers, it would be worthwhile to examine why and do better next time. Because here’s the trouble with “Arkham Knight”: It is a great game tarnished by its dreadful depictions of certain characters and situations.

arkham knight
Poison Ivy is held hostage in “Arkham Knight.”

The baseline problem with “Arkham Knight” is that instead of taking opportunities to depict strong women, the game makes them weak. For the most part, the female characters suck.

When you first come upon Poison Ivy early in the story, she has a gun to her head. You rescue her, and then you lock her in the back of the Batmobile and drag her to police headquarters. Later in the game, Batman determines that Ivy can communicate with — literally — a big old tree that could counteract the effects of a chemical weapon that Scarecrow intends to detonate somewhere in Gotham City. So Batman hauls his way back to lockup and drags her back to the Batmobile like she’s a petulant child. Poison Ivy is basically a power-up for the player to collect, like a mushroom in “Super Mario.”

She is barely wearing clothes throughout the entire ordeal.

arkham knight
“Arkham Knight” recreates a troubling scene from “The Killing Joke” in which Barbara Gordon is shot and paralyzed by the Joker.

Catwoman, often portrayed as Batman’s equal, fares no better. Like Ivy, her storyline begins in custody. Her outfit is unzipped enough to show a massive slice of cleavage. Why? Because Catwoman is “sexy” and it’s apparently hard to portray sexiness without showing boob?

The Riddler has strapped her to a chair, and Batman is called to rescue her. You arrive on the scene and find that there’s an entire ordeal required to free her: Riddler has fitted her with a choker that will explode unless you deactivate a number of locks. The gameplay sometimes has Batman and Catwoman working together — you can switch between them at points — but the pattern almost invariably requires Batman to complete some feat of cunning, force and reflexes while Catwoman bums around in a locked chamber. Her liberation is essentially a prize for you, the player.

Things are absolutely worst for Oracle, a hero in a wheelchair who assists Batman remotely. To detail her storyline would reveal much about the largest plot points in “Arkham Knight,” but things do not go well for her. An incredibly problematic storyline from the comic books is retread in vivid detail: She is abducted and maimed and exists almost entirely in this context to stir angst in the featured male characters. Batman, Robin, Commissioner Gordon and Alfred fret over her like a baby missing from the crib.

harley quinn
Harley Quinn steps up.

These are not failures from a gameplay perspective. But they are artistic missteps, awful quirks that will make this game — and perhaps all video games by extension — seem incredibly stupid to any critical thinker who may have thought to give “Arkham Knight” a try.

This game does not exist in a vacuum. It arrives at a moment when women are still being shut out of the gaming and tech industries to the point where many are even looking for work elsewhere. It is bizarre that “Arkham Knight” both includes many women and diminishes them so plainly.

All of that said, there are some important caveats. First: Harley Quinn — Joker’s deranged on-again, off-again girlfriend — is actually kind of cool this time around. Her character design in “Arkham City” (NSFW) was incredibly sexualized and seemingly intended purely for the male gaze. (For an interesting discussion of this very topic, listen to episode 58 of the lovely “Isometric” podcast.)

Here, Harley Quinn’s decked out in a pretty serious tutu and barks orders at a bunch of armed dudes. She’s more covered than not. The whole thing struck me as fairly whimsical and a step in the right direction, even if it’s not a perfect representation.

And no one can argue that the comic book source material is free from cheesecake. There are, in fact, many comics featuring these characters that are several orders of magnitude more sexist than “Arkham Knight.” Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn in particular are often exploited for sexy fluff, as this page from “Harley and Ivy #2” shows. It’s by the great Paul Dini and Bruce Timm:

poison ivy

But there’s a major difference between this comic and something like “Arkham Knight” — something that maybe isn’t so obvious. This Poison Ivy could be appealing to men and women alike. The entire miniseries is devoted to Harley and Ivy wreaking havoc on their own terms — it’s “sexy” more than “sexist.” They actively and successfully strike back against the forces that oppress them. They aren’t seeking the approval of men, and they certainly don’t need a player to rescue them.

And not that we need an eye for an eye, but the two ladies also take a second to objectify some dudes in the third issue:

harley and ivy

It’s ostensibly fun for everyone. And that’s what we could use a little more of in these games.

‘Dark Knight Rises’ Murders Hung Over ‘The Interview’ Decision

LOS ANGELES (AP) — When a group claiming credit for the hacking of Sony Pictures Entertainment threated violence against theaters showing “The Interview” earlier this week, the fate of the movie’s big-screen life was all but sealed.

Even though law enforcement didn’t deem the threats of violence credible at the time, theater owners and Sony undoubtedly considered the 2012 massacre of a dozen people in a Colorado movie theater. That attack came without warning, and at the time there was no precedent for such mass violence against a U.S. movie audience. The theater’s owner contends it could not have foreseen the bloodshed, but it still faces 20 lawsuits over the mass shootings and survivors and victims’ families asserting more should have been done to protect those who went to see a midnight showing of “The Dark Knight Rises.”

Experts say the defense used by Cinemark Holdings, Inc couldn’t be used if violence broke out at a showing of “The Interview.”

“It wasn’t worth the risk,” said Eric Wold, a movie exhibitor analyst with B. Riley & Co.

Despite the legal liability, at least one notable lawyer disagrees with the decision to cancel “The Interview.” President Barack Obama said Friday that it was a mistake for Sony to scrap the film, and he wished executives had consulted with him first.

“We cannot have a society in which some dictatorship someplace can start imposing censorship,” Obama said.

Some Hollywood notables, including actors Rob Lowe, Steve Carrell and director Michael Moore, have also criticized Sony’s decision.

Diplomatic and creative considerations aside, scrapping “The Interview” was not a huge financial consideration for theater owners, who would ultimately be responsible for any lawsuits over violence. The film, starring Seth Rogen and James Franco, was expected to account for less than two percent of fourth quarter earnings for movie theaters, Wold said.

Due to digital projections, theater owners can quickly re-program their screens to show other movies, such as new releases “The Hobbit 3” or “Night at the Museum.” ”It’s the press of a button,” Wold said.

The alternative could have been serious injuries to moviegoers as well as multiple lawsuits if the group calling itself the Guardians of Peace, or a copycat, attacked a cinema, said Jonathan Handel, a lawyer and professor at the University of Southern California Gould School of Law.

“That’s a lot of liability hanging over the theater chain,” Handel said.

He noted that mall owners and other studios had pressured Sony to cancel the Christmas Day release of “The Interview,” which stars Seth Rogen and James Franco. “They don’t want the movie-going experience on Christmas Day to resemble check in at LAX,” he said.

The film features an assassination plot against North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and the nation has denounced the movie. The FBI said Friday that it had determined North Korea was responsible for the hacking of Sony’s servers, which resulted in the theft of unreleased films, scripts, financial and medical information on employees and other corporate data.

It was only a matter of hours after hackers threatened massive violence against any theater showing “The Interview” that exhibitors started dropping the film. And no wonder.

“If, God forbid, something happened, they’re the ones who would be responsible for any lack of security or decisions that were made that led to the incident,” said entertainment attorney Uri Fleming of the firm Kleinberg Lange Cuddy & Carlo.

Sony cited the theater owners’ decision to drop the film as the reason for its pulling of the movie.

“Without theaters, we could not release it in the theaters on Christmas Day. We had no choice,” the company wrote in a statement. Sony said it was looking for alternative distribution channels for the film.

It remains unclear how a jury will perceive the case against Cinemark, which operated the Aurora, Colo., theater that James Holmes attacked in July 2012 during a midnight screening of the final installment of the latest Batman trilogy.

In court filings, lawyers for victims of the shooting have noted that Cinemark deployed extra security at some of its midnight “Dark Knight Rises” screenings and had employed a security firm to assess the risk of a drug cartel attacking a theater along the U.S.-Mexico border.

In an August ruling rejecting a motion by Cinemark to throw out the Aurora victims’ suits, U.S. District Court Judge R. Brooke Jackson wrote that whether the company could have been expected to deploy extra security without a threat against its theaters “is not an easy question to answer.”

However, the judge noted that moviegoers are especially vulnerable to attack.

“Although theaters had theretofore been spared a mass shooting incident, the patrons of a movie theater are, perhaps even more than students in a school or shoppers in a mall, ‘sitting ducks,'” Jackson wrote.

Fleming, the entertainment attorney, said Sony and the theater chains are unlikely to face any significant repercussions from pulling “The Interview.”

“Business relationships are the glue that bind (Hollywood),” he said.
