Carine Roitfeld, CR Studio Curate Latest Veuve Clicquot Widow Series

WIDOW DRESSING: Carine Roitfeld and her content team at CR Studio will curate the third Veuve Clicquot Widow Series in London in October. Roitfeld follows Nick Knight, who worked on the inaugural series, and FKA Twigs who oversaw last year’s creative and cultural event.
The series honors the house’s founder Madame Clicquot, who was widowed in October 1805. She took on her late husband’s Champagne business and pioneered several industry innovations. Each year, the series taps a creative type who has “an unfulfilled desire or passion project” they want to bring to life.
“I’m a storyteller, that’s my job as an editor and stylist. This opportunity is completely different, and now my team at CR Studio and I have the opportunity to tell a story with the viewer actually experiencing the story as we tell it,” Roitfeld said. “It’s not a party, it’s a truly immersive experience, a different way of thinking.”
Jean-Marc Gallot, president of Maison Veuve Clicquot, said the house wanted Roitfeld for her “artistic yet audacious aesthetic” and fashion leadership over the decades. “We welcome another empowering woman into the house of Veuve Clicquot.”
Last year, FKA Twigs let her imagination run wild and curated “Rooms,” an immersive experience featuring 12

Daniela Villegas Fetes Latest Salvatore Ferragamo Jewelry Collab at Erica Pelosini’s Home

Stylist Erica Pelosini is on a roll. The Italian transplant to Los Angeles has hosted events for Italian designers such as Gianvito Rossi, does Instagram Stories for Gucci, and designs her ladies’ shoe line Miss Leeman with husband and men’s footwear designer Louis Leeman. She also has thrown parties at her Beverly Hills home for Rachel Zoe, and now Salvatore Ferragamo.
The summer fete was a celebration of Ferragamo’s third collaboration with Los Angeles and Mexico City-based jewelry designer Daniela Villegas. The four-piece collection, inspired by tulips and lilies and the house’s silk scarf designs, is rendered in sterling silver and leather and is meant to be worn every day.

Cohost Eric Buterbaugh created a floral installation in a vintage pickup truck for the occasion, which guests such as Ethan Peck, Olivier Martinez, Lorraine Nicholson, Loree Rodkin, Paola Russo, Cara Santana, Tallulah Willis and Zoe posed in front of (not that the infinity pool overlooking the city wasn’t also a stunning backdrop).
Villegas’ first project with Ferragamo was a take on her signature scarab beetle jewelry produced for a Ferragamo runway show three years ago. The second was a collection of fine jewelry based on Ferragamo’s bird motifs called Liberta.

Instagram’s Latest Colorful Move For LGBTQ People Is A Must-See

Instagram is kicking Pride month off with a colorful new initiative that aims to encourage support for queer people around the world.

On Wednesday, the app transformed the all-pink, oft-photographed facade of Paul Smith’s Los Angeles store into the first of its five “rainbow walls.” The wall was unveiled by Mayor Eric Garcetti at an evening ceremony that was attended by Instagram influencers Justin BlakeRaymond Braun and Jacob Tobia, along with other members of the city’s LGBTQ community.

The walls, which will also debut in London, Madrid, Nashville and Cleveland later in June, will each be emblazoned with the #KindComments hashtag so that visitors can use the photo-sharing app to find a “community of support” nearby, according to Instagram’s Chief Operating Officer Marne Levine.

The company’s mission, Levine said, is “to strengthen relationships through shared experiences,” and the “rainbow wall” initiative is one of many similar efforts that aim to do just that. “Every day we see members of our community coming to Instagram to share their passions and experiences,” she told HuffPost. “We are extremely proud of our whole community, but we’re especially excited about the way people are using Instagram to spread kindness and compassion for one another.”

#kindcomments thank you Instagram and the city of LA for having me this was so cool #Pride #LGBT

A post shared by Justin Blake (@justinblake) on

Levine said she was personally moved by Blake, Tobia and other Instagram users who’ve found unique ways to share coming out stories and other personal experiences on the app.

“We’ve seen how images create empathy, bring people closer and promote understanding,” she said. “For Pride, we hope the rainbow walls become physical structures that inspire kind comments and support for Pride, but equally create an opportunity for people to come together on Instagram to support the LGBTQ community.”

Pirates Reportedly Pirate Latest ‘Pirates’ Movie For Ransom

Disney CEO Bob Iger told company employees Monday that hackers claim to have channeled their inner Captain Jack Sparrow, filching one of the company’s films and threatening to release it, multiple trade publications have reported.

While Iger didn’t mention the name of the film, Deadline reported that the title is the painfully fitting Johnny Depp swashbuckling adventure “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,” set for release May 26.

The plunderers are reportedly demanding a large ransom to be paid in bitcoin, a digital currency, or else they’ll release the film in increments online. Disney, working with the FBI, refuses to pay up.

The Huffington Post has reached out to the company for comment but did not receive an immediate response.

The Disney hack does not appear to be related to the ransomware attack that crippled computers in 150 countries last week, demanding bitcoin ransom payments of $ 300 to $ 600. But it does resemble a recent incident involving Netflix, which led to a big “Orange Is the New Black” leak.

Late last month, hackers nabbed the upcoming season, set for release June 9, from the servers of a postproduction company used by Netflix and threatened to release it early unless an undisclosed ransom was paid. The streaming service refused, and episodes of “Orange” Season 5 are now available on torrenting sites. While that leak didn’t have much of an impact, making a blockbuster like “Pirates” freely available online could have an adverse effect on ticket sales.

Whether the two incidents were caused by the same hackers, however, is unknown.

Harrison Ford Called Himself A ‘Schmuck’ After Latest Plane Incident

Harrison Ford is heard calling himself a “schmuck” in an audio recording released on Friday of his exchange with an air traffic controller following a February incident in which the actor landed his private plane on a taxiway instead of a runway.

“Yeah, hi, its Husky Eight-Niner Hotel Uniform,” Ford is heard saying on the recording, using the phonetic pronunciation of his aviation call sign. “I’m the schmuck that landed on the taxiway.”

The star of “Star Wars” and “Raiders of the Lost Ark” then goes on to explain that he landed in the wrong place because he was distracted by two jets.

On the audio tape, released by the Federal Aviation Administration, the air traffic controller asks for Ford’s name and pilot’s license, assuring the film star that the mishap is “no big deal.”

“Well it’s a big deal for me, hold on,” Ford responds, adding that he is looking in a backpack, apparently for his pilot’s license. At that point the audio cuts off.

In the Feb. 13 incident Ford flew his single-engine Aviat Husky over an American Airlines Boeing 737 jet in Santa Ana, California, before landing on the taxiway that runs parallel to the runway. Taxiways are paths along which aircraft can taxi when moving to or from a runway, where planes take off and land.

In 2015 Ford crashed a vintage plane onto a Los Angeles-area golf course, suffering serious injuries.

Hugo Matha Hosts Cocktail for Latest Bags

Hugo Matha opted for embroidered phoenix motifs, red and black snakeskin, and painted alligator in electric blue for his latest lineup of handbags mixing vintage and architectural inspirations.
Matha presented the collection at a party in the Paris apartment and studio he shares with the calligrapher and illustrator Nicolas Ouchenir.
Now in his third year designing the namesake accessories line, Matha was joined at the presentation by a handful of fellow fashion start-uppers including Alexandra Van Houtte of Tag-walk.com and Elizabeth Hilfiger.
Hilfigerb — daughter of designer Tommy — sells hoodies and T-shirts decorated by body piercings on her e-store Fooandfoo.com, which went live only two weeks ago.
Van Houtte’s Tag-walk.com is a search engine that labels images from the fashion shows with an array of detailed keywords — an aspiring “Google” for the runway.
Seeing which tags occur most often during the fashion weeks can provide empirical insight on emerging trends, Van Houtte said. “The biggest runway trend so far is transparent,” she said, “In street style we’re still seeing a lot of silver.”

Tilda Swinton, Chameleon Of Our Time, Is Literally Unrecognizable In Her Latest Role

This is Tilda Swinton. She’s a wonderful actress and, frankly, a goddamn chameleon.

She usually looks like this:

Over the course of her varied and illustrious career. Swinton has taken on roles that require dramatic transformation.

Here are a few examples:

Now, the 56-year-old actress is undertaking what appears to be her greatest on-screen transformation yet.

The British star is apparently playing an elderly man in her latest movie, “Suspiria.” The look is impressive, to say the least.

According to Deadline, the film is a remake of Dario Argento’s 1977 Italian horror movie and follows an American ballet dancer studying at a prestigious dance academy in Europe. She finds herself in peril as she begins to learn of the school’s dark history.

Dakota Johnson, Chloe Grace-Moretz and Mia Goth also star in the film.

Twitter Can’t Believe Rihanna Invented Punk In Latest Photo Shoot

After her appearance at Harvard University this week, where she became the institution’s Humanitarian of the Year, Rihanna’s latest photo shoot went live on Paper magazine Friday.

With a look that can properly be summed up as “bodega glam,” the shoot took place in New York in early February, and fans on social media were quick to voice support for the finished product in tones of awe.

Can you believe Rihanna invented punk?

It was a popular sentiment

Stylist Shannon Stokes, who worked alongside Farren Fucci, said her team took inspiration from the singer’s “budding acting career” ― she’s set to appear with Cate Blanchett, Sandra Bullock and Anne Hathaway in the all-female “Ocean’s Eight.” The resulting imagery casts her “as a high fashion clerk in a bodega of the future.”

For those keeping track at home, Rihanna has also invented the practice of grocery shopping.

In her Harvard speech, Rihanna discussed her philosophy of charity as she accepted the honor for her work promoting healthcare and education in the Caribbean. The singer helped set up a state-of-the-art center for oncology and nuclear medicine and funds a scholarship program to help Caribbean students attending U.S. schools.

“All you need to do is help one person, expecting nothing in return,” Rihanna stated.

She just keeps giving.

First Lady Melania Trump Turns to Alexander McQueen For Latest Look

RED ALERT: Having taken an increasingly public role on the world stage in the past week or two, First Lady Melania Trump was front-and-center at the Saturday rally President Trump held in Florida.
Not to be missed in a cap-sleeve red Alexander McQueen knee-length dress, FLOTUS led the crowd in The Lord’s Prayer. The President (who kept his own look casual with a white buttoned down shirt but no tie) smiled affirmatively as he crossed the stage before his wife offered a few remarks.
Wearing the Republican party’s signature color, the First Lady pledged to create and support initiatives that would help women and children throughout the world.

She told supporters, “It is my honor and a great pleasure to stand here before you as First Lady of the United States. The America we envision is one that works for all Americans and where all Americans can work and succeed. A nation committed to greater civility and unity between people from all sides of the political divide.”

Gigi Hadid Latest Campaign Confirms Our Theory That She Prefers to Model Sans Pants

“What are pants?” is the question we imagine Gigi Hadid asks herself while pondering the items in her closet every morning. At just 21 years old, the blonde model has dominated the modeling scene, posing for campaigns of some of fashion’s biggest brands including Guess, Tommy Hilfiger, Stewart Weitzman and Reebok. And while all of her photographs vary greatly, one common thread seems to be strewn throughout her expanding portfolio: pants are not required.

Case in point: Hadid’s latest Reebok campaign shots have arrived, and — you guessed it — she’s not wearing anything on her lower half. The brand announced Tuesday that Hadid will be the female face of their Club C tennis sneaker, joining Kendrick Lamar.

And there was this Tommy Hilfiger photo shoot…

…and this one.

She ditched pants and went with just a leotard for her latest Stewart Weitzman campaign.

See? Only shirts are necessary on set.

And we can’t forget this completely naked Weitzman moment that was frozen in time on billboards everywhere.

So just for good measure, here’s the time she posed nude on a horse for Allure.

…and that time she got her wings — definitely without pants.

Which of Gigi’s campaigns and magazine shoots are your favorites? Sound off below.

Lily-Rose Depp, 17, Is Karl Lagerfeld’s Latest Chanel Show Bride: See Her Show-Stopping Gown

Lately, it seems as though every major fashion house has eschewed their usual troupe of elite supermodels and Instagram It-girls in favor of the all-star children of equally all-star parents. If you need any further proof of that fact, a quick glance at Dolce & Gabbana’s front row and subsequent ad campaign will convince you. But while this trend may be a new tactic for some brands, Chanel has long endorsed these celebrity scions, which was clear at its latest haute couture show when Lily-Rose Depp walked in the finale gown.

The grand finale dress at Chanel’s couture show has long been considered a coveted spot, showcasing the house’s creative director Karl Lagerfeld’s current muse of the moment in a grand wedding gown. Everyone from Cara Delevingne to Kendall Jenner has filled the recognized runway spot.  This year the honor was bestowed on Lily-Rose who although not officially a model has posed for the brand’s eyewear campaign and walked in their show in the past. For this collection, she walked the mirrored runway at the Grand Palais in a huge, ruffled baby pink gown featuring a voluminous skirt and sleeves with a corseted bodice, a peter pan collar and a large belt.

Naturally, her mother and another former Chanel muse, Vanessa Paradis, sat front row at the show to support her daughter alongside her aunt Alyson Paradis.

Of course, while their appearance may not have been the major headline from the affair, fashion week’s favorite faces Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid were also in attendance, albeit in much more covered up ensembles than we’ve seen them wearing out on the streets lately. Kendall wore a glittering silver gown with a plunging neckline, feathered peplum and sheer bottom, while Bella wore a similar look in black but with a patterned skirt and matching boots.

What do you think of the new Chanel collection? Would you like to see Lily-Rose walk in more shows? Sound off below!

J Brand, Vrai & Oro, Gossamer Among Latest Deals Struck for Row DTLA

CRITICAL MASS: Activity at the Row DTLA appears to be gaining momentum, with several retail and office deals now in the pocket of the downtown Los Angeles redevelopment.
The market’s been closely watching the project, at 2 million square feet of space that’s in the midst of a reimagining a six-building portfolio built by the Southern Pacific Railroad originally as its rail yard in the Twenties. The properties, acquired in 2014 by New York real estate investment firm Atlas Capital Group and Square Mile Capital Management for a reported $ 357 million, includes the current headquarters and main factory of American Apparel. PETA Taps Singer Joss Stone for Latest Campaign Protesting the Use of Exotic Skins

LONDON — People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has tapped the British singer Joss Stone to appear in its campaign against the use of exotic skins for fashion.
Shot by Andrzej Dragan, Stone is portrayed with tears in her eyes and her body is painted to resemble the skin of a crocodile.
The release of the images follows a series of actions taken by the organization to prevent practices in the alligator farms known for supplying Hermès-owned tanneries.
“We don’t need to steal animals’ skin for fashion, and we’re grateful that Joss has joined us in sending this message,” said Elisa Allen, PETA associate director.
After an undercover investigation, PETA exposed what it condemned as acts of cruelty to animals at two alligator farms in Texas. A video posted on PETA’s YouTube channel shows the alligators at the facilities being kept in severely crowded pits and being cut open live.
“I hope when people see footage of what happens to crocodiles and alligators killed for their skin to be turned into handbags, they’ll join me in leaving wildlife out of their wardrobes,” said Stone.
PETA filed complaints against both the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in Anahuac, Tex., in June. The actions taken resulted in

The White Buffalo Roams into Hearts of Listeners on Latest LP

2015-08-21-1440121371-1664119-TWBalbumcoverloveandthedeath1.jpg

When Sons of Anarchy took its final ride last fall, they went out with a song that perfectly captured the spirit of the characters and as Jax Teller reconciled with the fate he had chosen, the vocals of Jake Smith were played. Smith, aka The White Buffalo, has been captivating audiences long before SoA went off into the sunset and is making his mark again with his brooding vocals, deep and heavy lyrics with his latest record, Love and the Death of Damnation.

The record, which is another personal journey for Smith, hears the singer / songwriter branching out and finding more about himself both as a person and as an artist. I spoke to him about the new album, having his work become a part of pop culture, and his life on the road. Take a look, below:

The new album is titled “Love and the Death of Damnation,” what does that mean to you personally and musically?

I wanted a title that had elements of the album in it but with broader strokes. There’s some love, some spirituality explored in this album as well as the idea of heaven and hell.

This is your fifth record, what did you do differently on this record that you haven’t done before?

There are a few tracks that I kept feeling and sounding good. I didn’t take them to a darker place, which has taken me awhile as a songwriter to feel comfortable doing. Musically it’s more varied groove-wise than anything I’ve ever done. There are some swampy jams, there’s even a gospel song.

Many of your records are concept albums, is this record?

No, but the very first song on the album I wrote while writing my last album. It’s a bit of a continuation from the last album I guess you could say, like a bookend. This one’s just songs though for the most part.

Last fall, you were part of TV history singing “Come Join the Murder” on the finale of Sons of Anarchy. The song was written by series creator Kurt Sutter, what was it like singing lyrics written by someone else that wasn’t a cover and being a part of that important moment?

It was actually co-written with Bob Thiele and I as well but the lyrics were primarily written by Kurt. It was a unique experience as far as singing somebody else’s lyrics. It was a bit harder to feel it, but it was definitely emotional. It took me awhile to get it, the wordplay of “Come Join the Murder”. He actually wrote those lyrics without the intent of it being the finale episode’s song. It was for an earlier episode, but he loved it so much that he decided to use it as the finale.

Other songs of yours were also used in SOA; were you a fan of the show when you let the songs in the show?

No, I had actually never watched it until I got a song in it. Then I got hooked and became a diehard!

Many of your other tracks have been used in other TV/ film related projects like Californication, West of Memphis. Lone Ranger, and others. There is still a majority of people who have no idea who you are (blows my mind), but also a majority of people who discovered you through projects like this. Do you find this to be an effective way of getting your music out there?

Yeah, absolutely. Probably SOA more than any other show just due to the fact that the way they used music was so in-your-face. With the montage scenes, they really made it a part of the story and not just background fluff. Having so many songs has also helped guide people to the rest of my catalog.

While I am sure you have gotten this before, why did you opt to go under the moniker ‘The White Buffalo’ instead of using your birth name? Did you take the name from the Charles Bronson film?

Can’t sell T-shirts with the name Jake Smith on it! The idea was that The White Buffalo would be a bit more grand than just a singer-songwriter project. Could be a solo artist, a full band, trio, etc.; it adds a bit of mystique as well.

A majority of your songs are very dark, deep, and come from intense places. What is it like bringing them to life night after night on stage and playing them again? Is it a cathartic experience for you?

I try to feel the lyrics every night but it’s not exactly cathartic. In the performance, I’m trying to be passionate and think about what I’m saying which definitely gets me to a good place.

Cynthia Vincent Latest Designer to Partner With O’Neill

PRINT PLAY: The tribal and floral prints Cynthia Vincent is known for will soon be on the wetsuits and swimwear of O’Neill.
It’s the surfwear brand’s second time partnering with a designer and follows the rollout of fall pieces done in conjunction with Anna Sui, which hit stores a few weeks ago and saw quick sell-through on pieces such as a cream-colored kimono and crochet bikini.
“We’re really careful to partner with someone who will elevate our current looks,” said O’Neill women’s design director Rachael Hill. “There’s definitely synergy there. [The designer collaborations are] not necessarily a departure for us as much as it is an expansion and kind of captivating another customer we wouldn’t get otherwise.”
The collection for summer 2016 is expected to hit retail in April and is organized into three categories: sportswear, retailing from $ 59.50 to $ 99.50; swim, ranging from $ 46 to $ 110; and wetsuits priced between $ 140 to $ 200.
The company’s now turned to its holiday collection, which will also infuse designs from Vincent and could possibly include party dresses, chunky sweaters and giftable items, such as cosmetic bags or footwear. However, Hill said the collection is still in its early stages.
Additional designer collaborations are possible for the future

NASA’s Latest Image Of The International Space Station Is Breathtaking

I spy with my little eye…

Continuing an epic summer of celestial photography, NASA released a stunning image of the International Space Station on Sunday. The shot, captured by agency photographer Bill Ingalls, shows the ISS flying across the face of the moon at a breakneck five miles per second.

There are currently six crew members on board the ISS, which orbits some 300 miles above Earth. The moon, meanwhile, is 238,900 miles away.

Ingalls has served as the senior contract photographer for the U.S. space agency for 27 years. You can see more of his stunning work on his personal website.

The Rules of the Game: Artist Ariane Schick’s Latest Oeuvre

2015-06-24-1435109209-7163303-Ariane_Schick_55gansevoort.jpg

“A Throw of Fifteen-Love”, by multimedia artist Ariane Schick, opened Thursday at 55Gansevoort, a project space known for exhibiting renowned and upcoming artists including Aaron Bobrow, Jeanette Hayes and Betty Thompkins. This latest opening comes immediately following Schick’s show, Casual Throws, at gallery Super Dakota in Brussels. While the title of her last exhibition referred to the comfy blankets that decorate the ends of sofas, “A Throw of Fifteen-Love” refers to score keeping in tennis. This serves as a reminder of the reciprocal, interdependent dynamics featured in her work, and perhaps even more so, it highlights the relationship of the work to the viewer, which bounces back and forth, much like the back and forth of a ball on a tennis court.

Like a spectator at a tennis match, a spectator of Schick’s show also looks on from the outside in. All exhibitions at 55Gansevoort are fully visible, at all hours, by peering through the windowed doors. Upon peeking in, one first notices a strip of printed organza at eye level that ribbons the room’s walls, doors, pillars and corners. It wraps entirely around the space, almost decoratively, enveloping it like a present. The continuous flow of images printed on the organza is a haphazard mix of interiors, exteriors and the human form. Gathered from Internet search results and personal pictures, they are lit up by rounded, store bought wall sconces, placed directly on the strip, obscuring some of the images and highlighting others. The sconces are placed at varied intervals, which sets a rhythm for the viewer’s eyes to travel around the room in a continuous loop.

Jeffery: Can you describe the images featured on the organza ribbon?

Schick: The ribbon features a still from the Japanese film Tampopo, in which two embracing characters tip an egg yolk back and forth until its thin skin inevitably breaks. Stills and posters from the French film Maitresse show the protagonist, who spends the film exploring the limits between her two very different personas, in moments of transformation. The still of her in front of her mirror, its bare light in the foreground, is a throwback to the wall sconces in the space. The panel also features images of clothing items found on eBay. A picture of a pair of semi transparent vinyl trousers and figure hugging swimwear are modeled by disjointed, static, headless mannequins, highlighting the fact that what is cut off or not visible is just as important as what is clearly available to the eye.

Other images pull the viewer into a more historical context. These include an inflatable finger by situationist group Haus-Rucker-Co., whose work explored architecture through installations that altered perceptions of space. The image of Elsa Schiaperelli’s trompe l’oeil gloves emphasizes the recurring theme of the boundaries between inside and out. There is a repetitive series of frames of a glass fence-like structure that holds back a hedge. Its green mass spills out over the top, while still visible through the fence’s surface, which reflects the trees and electricity poles that face it. There are images of birds in a cage and a snapshot of flowers with sun glares that interrupt it.

An image of a building that features a large hole through which you can see the sky allows the viewer to slide from outside in. A chest of drawers holding a bonsai tree plays with limits and boundaries. A CGI image of a single pistachio nut shows two shells neatly separated. And finally, the open pages of a book called Silent Back (Dog), features images of puppy dogs’ butts, held open by hands visible in the snapshot.

Jeffery: Can you describe the importance of the sconces sporadically placed on top of this imagery?

Schick: The sconces posit an air of, potentially, but not necessarily, domestic, casual informality. They push the image strip back to the status of a decorative element. They also play up the space, recognizing its needs, acknowledging both its specificities and its commonplace nature. They represent, in various direct and indirect ways, a blurring of perimeters and borders. They place the viewer at the center of a court of images and objects in which their display hovers between presence and absence in order to highlight the viewer in action.

The result of Schick’s show is a site sensitive experience as the wallpaper-like strip flows across the room. The viewer slips between layers of available information as the ribbon beckons the eye to follow the strip in its linear form. Overall, the images project an unreliable feeling and their accumulation heightens this by flattening out and cancelling their singular importance as readable messages. The sconces placed on top of the images interrupt their flow and remove the feeling of the typical ‘white cube’ experience, as they evoke a more residential space. The title, “A Throw of Fifteen-Love”, the linear form of the project, and its minimalistic simplicity, all hark on the experience of rules as a recurring theme in the artist’s work. Ultimately, if Schick’s goal is to put the viewer in a position where they question in what context they are seeing what is laid out before them and ask themselves, “How am I supposed to look at this?” then she has succeeded.

A Throw of Fifteen Love is open June 18th – July 12, 2015, 55 Gansevoort St, New York, NY, 10014, http://www.55gansevoort.com

Cher Has Landed Marc Jacobs’ Latest Campaign

cher-marc-jacobs-ad-black-dress

Move over, Kendall JennerCher just landed Marc Jacobs’ latest campaign (Kendall starred in spring ’15 ads). The new ad has the music icon in a long black dress and matching gloves plucked straight from the runway, with the bold red background evoking the Diana Vreeland-inspired set design from Jacobs’ show.

The image is gorgeous and just the latest in a string that’s confirmed that women of a certain age are back in a big way. Brands like Saint Laurent, Céline, and Dolce & Gabbana have all used older faces in recent campaigns, and at the moment, there’s hardly anyone hotter on a red carpet than 77-year-old Jane Fonda.

The fashion world was a little surprised when Jacobs took the raven-haired beauty as his date to this year’s Met Gala, but this ad explains everything. Well played, Marc, well played.

Sundance So Far: James Franco’s Ex-Gay Film And Greta Gerwig & Noah Baumbach’s Latest

After being wowed by “The End of the Tour” and “Z for Zachariah,” Saturday’s Sundance slate was more of a mixed bag. But with some of our favorite names like James Franco, Kristin Wiig and Greta Gerwig, there is plenty to talk about with the films HuffPost Entertainment saw on Saturday — perhaps most notably, the buzzed-about transgender-focused underdog, “Tangerine.”

“Mistress America”
Directed by Noah Baumbach
Written by Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig
Starring Greta Gerwig and Lola Kirke

mistress america

Filmmaker Noah Baumbach collaborated with actress, and now girlfriend, Greta Gerwig in “Greenberg” (2010) and again on “Frances Ha” (2012) — the latter a film that stole hipster hearts and turned everyone into an instant Gerwig fan. Our hopes were high for their next film “Mistress America,” which premiered at Sundance on Saturday evening.

Gerwig and Baumbach co-wrote the film with Baumbach directing, and, like “Frances Ha,” it is in many ways a love letter (part two) to New York. Gerwig stars as a wacky, jack-of-all-trades young woman who lives in Times Square and injects her future stepsister (Lola Kirke), a freshman in college whom she barely knows, with a much-needed jolt of energy.

The real star of the film is Kirke. Her facial features and slight, adorable lisp might seem familiar — she is the younger sister of Jemima Kirke, one of the stars of HBO’s “Girls.” But Lola Kirke steals the film with her perfect innocence, her desire to be a great writer, her need to feel more alive. She has a face and aura that John Hughes would have loved. She would have starred in his ‘80s films. She just has that look.

Gerwig, on the other hand, while still magnetic on screen, plays a character that is more flawed that usual. More manic, even. She is self-obsessed and self-righteous and sometimes feels like a cyclone spinning out of control, singing and dancing on stage, teaching a SoulCycle class and showing up unannounced at an ex-friend’s doorstep, asking for money to start a restaurant. She says things like “the television show is the new novel,” and “there’s no cheating when you’re 18; you should all be touching each other all the time.”

“Mistress America” is more screwball comedy than is typical for Baumbach, but there’s no doubt that the duo write incredible dialogue -– the scene where an old classmate of Gerwig’s tells her off for being mean is incredibly funny and pleasurable. Add a 1980s soundtrack and vibe, and you have yet another unique Baumbach production. — SB

“I Am Michael”
Directed by Michael Kelly
Written by Michael Kelly and Stacy Miller
Starring James Franco, Zachary Quinto, Charlie Carver and Emma Roberts

i am michael

Do you know that feeling of walking out of a movie thinking, “Well, that was … fine”? That’s the crux of “I Am Michael,” the dramatization of a buzzy 2011 New York Times article written by the formerly serious boyfriend of gay activist Michael Glatze, who denounced his homosexuality after a health scare and became a Christian pastor. First-time director Justin Kelly, under the wing of producer Gus Van Sant, who directed James Franco in the much different queer-activism film “Milk,” casts no judgment on Michael’s life in this fairly objective portrait, yet still manages to end on a note of skepticism. But the chronological timestamps that split this movie into chapters according to the various cities in which Michael resides feel like intrusive proclamations that the pacing is a tick-tock of upswings and downswings in his life. That sometimes strips the film of the nuance needed to delve into the knotty mind of a man who rose to savior status in the LGBT community and then wilted into a disheartening turncoat.

That said, Franco, playing Michael, does his finest work since “127 Hours” (or “Spring Breakers,” but that seems like a strange comparison), and Zachary Quinto is strong as his perplexed but patient boyfriend. Before Michael’s heart palpitations raise life-altering questions about what will happen to him when he dies, the two actors boast a specific chemistry that doubles as a reflection of the state of the LGBT landscape in the late ‘90s, around the time of Matthew Shepard’s murder, and early 2000s. Michael’s turning point coincides with the rise of gay rights and the nation’s shifting viewpoints — an aspect the film glazes over in favor of surface-level dialogue.

Even with Van Sant aboard, this film feels like the work of a first-time director. By the time we find Michael at seminary (where he gets engaged to a woman, played by an uncertain Emma Roberts), the movie’s 98-minute running time feels like it requires more chapters of our own lives than we care to devote to what should be a less impersonal product. There’s no soapbox for this movie to climb atop, though — this is a character study and not an indictment, and for that, “I Am Michael” is worthwhile. — MJ

“Tangerine”
Directed by Sean Baker
Written by Sean Baker and Chris Bergoch
Starring Kitana Kiki Rodriguez, Mya Taylor, Karren Karagulian, Mickey O’Hagan, Alla Tumanian and James Ransone

tangerine

“Tangerine” is a window into a very specific room. Or rooms, shall we say. Shot in a taxi, on the streets and in parking lots of Los Angeles, director Sean Baker crafts an up close and personal voyage story of Sin-Dee, a transgender prostitute who, along with her friend, trek around the city in search of Sin-Dee’s unfaithful pimp boyfriend.

We see exteriors of Los Angeles like few films have captured before; most of “Tangerine” moves on foot or takes quick breaks in strip malls or in paying john’s cars. It moves through taco bars, motel rooms, bus stops, freeways, public transit platforms and even Sunset Boulevard.

But what is most miraculous about the film is that it was all shot on an iPhone. And in just about four weeks time. That fact alone is astonishing given the quality of the film’s aesthetic and style. But “Tangerine” is not just a moving Instagram photo. Baker cast the stars of the film, all untrained actors, at an LGBTQ center in Los Angeles. They fight, scream, cry and move all over the city with an authenticity.

Classical music and dance beats punctuate the sprawling shots of street corners and characters holding court in the donut shop. The city is their home. There is more repetition of the word “bitch” than possibly any film to come before it. But there are many layers of tenderness and intimacy that inevitably connect the leads of the film to a world that is much, much larger than they are. — SB

“The Diary Of A Teenage Girl”
Written and directed by Marielle Heller
Starring Bel Powley, Alexander Skarsgård, Kristen Wiig and Christopher Meloni

diary of a teenage girl

Plenty of movies have attempted to capture the thread of American ennui that sprung up in the afterglow of the 1960s’ hippie crusade and sexual revolution. Most of them cast broad strokes over the flower power that enlivened so much of the country and disturbed so many others. “The Diary of a Teenage Girl” offers a unique take on one dysfunctional family navigating through a mélange that mystifies their sense of purpose in 1974 San Francisco.

At the center of that family is 15-year-old Minnie Goetz (Bel Powley). We first see her gleaming as she glides down the street sporting a proud smirk on her face. “I had sex today. Holy shit,” she says in a voice-over that stems from the tape recorder that houses her audio diary. Sometimes we hear that diary as narration, and sometimes we see Minnie lying on her bed, logging insecure thoughts about body image and self-worth. Crazed for the love and attraction her rowdy, Patty Hearst-obsessed mother (an excellent Kristen Wiig) often doesn’t provide, the emotionally immature teen begins an ongoing assignation with her mom’s boyfriend (Alexander Skarsgård) that inaugurates her sexual awakening. As portrayed winningly by Powley, one of Sundance’s breakout stars, Minnie’s distinctive voice carries this film. She is a budding graphic artist, and the movie frequently morphs into charming animation. (Ever wondered what it would be like to see a character picture a stranger’s hand-drawn penis emerge from his pants?) Once Minnie’s virginity is gone, she embarks on one sexual tryst and drug experimentation after the next. One of the finest scenes comes during an acid trip with her mother’s boyfriend that reliably calls upon the phantasmagoric illustrations that occur throughout.

It’s possible there’s too much languor in “Diary of a Teenage Girl,” but first-time writer/director Marielle Heller does an impressive job adapting Phoebe Gloekner’s unusual novel, which also features hand-drawn illustrations throughout. It’s certainly a movie that grows on you after leaving the theater. Its finest achievement comes in not asking for a moral calculation of its characters’ actions. You’ll recognize the confusion that troubles Minnie’s understanding of the adults around her, and you’ll fiend for a glimmer of hope for the adventure that awaits her future life. — MJ

Sundance So Far: Adam Scott & Jason Schwartzman’s Fake Penises, Ethan Hawke’s Latest Dad & ‘The Witch’

Last time on Sundance So Far, we discussed “The Bronze” and other movies that opened the festival. Temperatures dropped to 18 degrees at sundown in Park City, Utah, on Day 2 of Sundance. Parkas were out and crowds were thick at some of the most anticipated films of the opening weekend. The press screening for “Z for Zachariah,” filled up two hours before the film began, and Jason Segel stunned audiences as David Foster Wallace at the world premiere of “The End of the Tour.” We’ll write about both of those films shortly, but here are the other titles HuffPost Entertainment editor Matthew Jacobs and Los Angeles senior editor Sasha Bronner caught on Friday:

“Stockholm, Pennsylvania”
Written and directed by Nikole Beckwith
Starring Saoirse Ronan, Jason Isaacs and Cynthia Nixon

stockholm

There is more than initially meets the eye in the post-kidnapping drama about a young woman, played by Saoirse Ronan (“The Grand Budapest Hotel”), who is returned to her home after being held captive in a basement for the majority of her life.

Taken from a park when she was 4 years old raised by her kidnapper (played by Jason Isaacs), the extent of what her character knows about the world can be held in the palm of her hand.

The film’s intentional use of claustrophobia does the trick. When Ronan sticks her head out of her bedroom window and, we presume, feels rain for the first time, you too feel her wonder and her innocence.

But this is not an innocent film. Cynthia Nixon, who plays Ronan’s mother, is understandably emotional when her daughter returns home and does her very best to help the family acclimate to their suddenly different circumstances (think “trust falls”). But the people of the town stare. And they discover that their missing daughter doesn’t know when her real birthday is, doesn’t remember them at all and actually thinks that her name is Leia — “named after a Princess,” she tells her parents on her first afternoon home.

The psychological phenomenon Stockholm syndrome describes the common scenario of a captive feeling protective, loving and sympathetic to their captor. Ronan’s character visits the man who took her only once in jail and after telling him that she doesn’t know how to do anything in the real world, she also says she doesn’t know what the worst thing is that’s happened to her — spending her life with him, or spending the rest of it without him.

When she asks if he regrets it, he answers that it takes the same amount of effort to run in place or to run a mile, and he would rather see the mile.

A startling twist (which, of course, we will not ruin for you) turns everything inside out. Filmmaker Nikole Beckwith presents a quiet and powerful debut feature that succeeds in redefining what captivity means as well as tilting the kaleidoscope of identity and love ninety degrees on its side.

Stay tuned: Saoirse Ronan gets more screen time at the festival — she also stars in the 1950s drama “Brooklyn,” written by Nick Hornby, as an Irish-American immigrant attempting to choose between love and her place in the world. — SB

“The Overnight”
Written and directed by Patrick Brice
Starring Taylor Schilling, Adam Scott, Jason Schwartzman and Judith Godrèche

overnight

Two delights of Friday’s Sundance came in Patrick Brice’s very funny “The Overnight.” First, Adam Scott and Taylor Schilling, playing a couple looking for friends after moving to Los Angeles, smoke weed with another couple (Jason Schwartzman and Judith Godrèche) who invite them over for what appears to be an innocent playdate for their children. They are a riot as bumbling stoners who conjure up a candidness foreign to their lives as young parents during what turns out to be a quite propulsive gathering. Later, Scott and Schwartzman prance around naked for a solid chunk of the film, for reasons I’d rather you discover on your own. Just know that both actors wear prosthetics, and the size of the genitals on display is an uproarious part of the plot.

“The Overnight” is just bawdy enough to be something of a sex comedy, but it’s nothing if not a tactful tale of a rowdy, confused couple befriending the innocent newcomers from their neighborhood park. The playdate — billed as a simple pizza night at their palatial home — turns into an all-night affair with increasingly bizarre results. There’s a slight dip in the film’s energy toward the end as the dramatic underpinnings of the foursome’s lives unfold, but it doesn’t take away from the sharp performances and clever writing this film boasts. Now where should we mail our smoke-out invitation for Scott and Schilling? — MJ

“The Witch”
Written and directed by Robert Eggers
Starring Anya Taylor-Joy, Kate Dickie, Ralph Ineson, Harvey Scrimshaw, Lucas Dawson and Ellie Grainger

the witch

Today’s horror landscape is bleak. The reliance on gratuitous violence and uninventive scare tactics is more of a nightmare than any of the stories being depicted onscreen. Yet every year a few movies break through the gore to channel the worldly panic that horror is meant to showcase. This year, one of those is “The Witch,” a movie that became one of Day 2’s buzziest Sundance titles. (To wit: A24 is nearing a deal to distribute “The Witch.”)

Set in 1630 New England, “The Witch” is a stylish chiller about a devoutly Christian family whose infant vanishes. Their crops fail and they begin accusing one another of occultism — all while a witch creeps through the depths of the woods that surround their home. The movie seems talky at first, but let these irascible colonials work through their muddy family dynamics, from the mother’s grief-stricken instability to the father’s sympathy for her daughter after his wife accuses her of witchcraft. This is eerie filmmaking at its finest, which is all the more remarkable considering Robert Eggers is a first-time director. By the time their paranoia reaches peak levels, this family of six can barely stomach the sight of one another, so wracked with the panic that haunts their countenance. As if Mark Korven’s strings-heavy score weren’t enough eerie enough, know that the film is pieced together using actual journals (including specific conversations) that chronicled the witchcraft that took place in the 17th century. — MJ

“Ten Thousand Saints”
Written and drected by Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini
Starring Ethan Hawke, Asa Butterfield, Hailee Steinfeld, Emile Hirsch and Emily Mortimer

ten thousand

Who doesn’t want to see Ethan Hawke as a burner, weed-selling, dysfunctional father with a heart of gold? Apparently no one, because the premiere of his new film “Ten Thousand Saints” was sold out Friday evening at the Sundance Film Festival. Hawke stars alongside Emily Mortimer, Hailee Steinfeld, Emile Hirsch and
Asa Butterfield, and is the center of an off-kilter family dealing with an actual tragedy and also the general tragedy of growing up.

Set in the 1980s, first in Vermont and then in the East Village in New York City, the film is dripping with teen angst, drugs and rock and roll. Actually, teen angst, weed, cocaine, mushrooms, plenty of huffing and punk rock, to be exact. There are Hare Krishnas, tattoos, protests in New York City and a genre of the hardcore punk scene called “straight edge” where abstinence and sobriety are encouraged.

The teen stars of the film are its strength, carrying their angst like a heavy duffle bag thrown in the corner of every room they enter. But there is a lot packed into the story and there may just be too many protagonists involved for many viewers’ tastes. We probably aren’t supposed to, but in some ways end up rooting the most for Hawke in all his flawed attempts at being a decent father.

Filmmaking duo Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini work as a team writing, directing and editing and are best known for “American Splendor” (2003), “The Nanny Diaries” (2007) and “Cinema Verite” (2011). The two were nominated for an Academy Award in 2003 for their writing of “American Splendor.”

The writing in “Ten Thousand Saints” gives Hawke room to make audiences laugh with his idea of good parenting and one of the most awkward father-son talks we have seen. In a surprisingly poignant moment, he reveals to his son (played by Butterfield) one of his observations about the world and about family: “Women make their decisions and men are just trying not to be men. The whole system needs looking over.”

Young Millenials will flock to the film if they are looking for an indie, hipster coming of age story with plenty of bad decisions and always, of course, the promise of love. — SB

Queen Letizia’s Latest Outfit Will Convince You That Matchy-Matchy Is a Glorious Thing

There’s a joke around the office that I’m the unofficial royal style commentator, and it’s a tease I’m totally OK with—I could talk about this stuff all day. Queen Letizia is the latest to give us a beyond-beautiful fashion moment, going completely monochrome for the Epiphany Day Military Parade in Madrid.

queen-letizia-teal-gown-epiphany-day-parade-2015

Typically, I’m not a fan of matching too much and support things like bright accessories adding the punch of a new color (we saw a perfect example this morning). Leave it to a queen to remind me just how stunning single-color devotion can be, especially since it takes a lot of effort to find shades that so perfectly match. Her suede heels and clutch are both the exact same shade as the sleek, belted evening gown, and the effect is simply too pretty to handle.

I’m also beginning to wonder if the one-color look is becoming an officially regal thing: Princess Charlene just did it too!

Do you love a monochrome look?

New York Film Festival 2014 #2: Ethan Hawke’s Sweet Debut, the Dardennes’ Latest & More

THE 52ND NEW YORK FILM FESTIVAL

THE LOOK OF SILENCE *** 1/2
SEYMOUR: AN INTRODUCTION ***
EDEN ** 1/2
TWO DAYS, ONE NIGHT ** 1/2

The official launch for the New York Film Festival begins on September 26 with the world premiere of David Fincher’s Gone Girl. They’re in luck; the early reviews are raves. And the critic screenings are in overdrive with three or four movies playing during the day for over a week now. So there’s a lot to catch up on and a lot to see. Here are two very good documentaries and two dramas. Only one may be truly great at first blush but they’re all worthwhile in one way or another.

THE LOOK OF SILENCE *** 1/2

Director Joshua Oppenheimer’s Oscar-nominated film The Act Of Killing is one of the brashest, strangest, downright surreal films of recent years. It looks at the bizarre and unsettling facts of Indonesia, where under cover of the fight against communism a massive genocide took place in the 1960s. The people who committed it are still in power, still living among the survivors of the people they brutally slaughtered. The PBS series POV is airing the film on October 6 and it’s not to be missed. What makes the film so strange? Well, Oppenheimer met with the people who committed these crimes against humanity and somehow got them to reenact their murderous actions…in the style of various movie genres. This doesn’t begin to accurately capture the rare mood of the film, which is funny and horrifying. It’s no surprise that Errol Morris and Werner Herzog championed it; they love breaking the rules in their documentaries as well.

Now comes a companion piece, The Look Of Silence. It is in many ways the polar opposite of the first. No gimmicks, no tricks, no high concept framing to coax people into documenting their own crimes. It simply shows the brother of one man who was slaughtered quietly talking to and sometimes confronting the many, many people in power who are responsible for murder.

2014-09-24-still1290x163.jpg

One of my (many) pet peeves is describing this actor or that director as “brave.” There’s nothing brave about playing a part on stage or in a movie, no matter how audacious. Save “brave” for people who genuinely risk their lives for others, like cops and firemen and soldiers and the like. But genuine courage is the only way to describe the father who takes center stage in this work. Oppenheimer’s earlier film documented who killed his brother and how. In this movie, the man literally risks his life to confront the people — including an uncle — who did this.

The title comes from the way he can ask a question and then simply sit and stare as their absurd, insulting, petty, dismissive or disingenuous answers fall to the ground, unworthy of comment. Some crumple under his quiet bearing of witness; others literally threaten his life. A young woman hears her elderly father describe drinking the blood of the people he slaughtered (in order to not go crazy, others explain, in a superstitious response to the evil they were perpetrating). She begs forgiveness. Others stonily refuse to admit the obvious. It’s an unnerving, potent, remarkable work.

And it’s no joke: many of the technical credits on the film say simply Anonymous, a potent reminder of how very dangerous this truly brave act was. It’s not just a brave act; it’s also a genuine work of art. Surely at the beginning of every audience Q&A, at every press conference, the first question will be: has this man been killed? One of the best films of the year, The Look Of Silence is a startlingly different but just as potent companion piece to one of the best documentaries in a long time.

Here’s the trailer for The Art Of Killing, which airs on PBS October 6.

SEYMOUR: AN INTRODUCTION ***

Ethan Hawke is becoming rather annoying. He’s been an acclaimed actor on stage and screen for many years. He’s written novels. Then he took up journalism and delivered a great profile of Kris Kristofferson for Rolling Stone. Now he’s starring in Boyhood, one of the most acclaimed films of the year and a genuine indie hit. To top it off, he’s making his debut as a documentary filmmaker with this sweet valentine to Seymour Bernstein, a beloved music teacher.

2014-09-24-SeymourIntroductiondocmaintstr1a.jpg

They met at a dinner party a few years ago with Hawke immediately opening up about his almost crippling stage fright and self-doubts about whether what he did had any worth. Bernstein was an ideal sounding board: he’d quit his brilliant public career as a pianist and devoted himself to teaching and composing.

Bernstein’s philosophy is that practice of any craft, any talent, makes you better at your craft and better as a person. He turned his back on the treadmill of fame and perhaps feels it’s mostly destructive. But fear is ok, even essential. Doubt is ok. And the doing of it, the working at your talent is essential. So indeed, is creating and not just recreating. (A pianist who plays a piece by Bach is “recreating.” A pianist who composes his own work is “creating.” One is not worthier than the other but Bernstein feels strongly that artists should create.

Hawke, as a writer and director and producer sometimes beleaguered for having the temerity to do so (much like james Franco is today) surely was sympathetic to this. Plus Bernstein was so delightful, so full of life, so happy in his calling as a teacher. Why didn’t someone make a movie about him? Why indeed?

So Hawke did. The film is quietly bold. It’s a profile of Bernstein. But it also documents his philosophy of life and Hawke’s struggles are a modest subplot. This makes it a little shaggy, especially when it climaxes with what should be the cheap sentimentality of a public performance: Bernstein gives a benefit concert for the theater company Hawke helped found. But this becomes the film’s masterstroke since Hawke intercuts footage of Bernstein practicing the piece and performing the piece, symbolizing the man’s approach to life with one bold stroke.

Not since To Be And To Have has a teacher been shown in such a disarming way; you want to immediately sit in on one of Bernstein’s classes. Or at least buy some of his music. (A brief search turned up nothing officially in print.) Hopefully a soundtrack won’t be far behind this charming work.

EDEN ** 1/2

Film festivals can play a vital role for some filmmakers. They may not achieve international success at first. But a festival that believes in a talent can keep championing their work, telling critics to pay attention. I was not enamored with Mia Hansen-Love’s debut Father Of My Children. So I skipped her similar seeming second feature. But here she is again with a new movie. It’s radically different in nature from her earlier work and the buzz is good so here I am.

Indeed, Eden is very different from her small scale dramas, though it surely is linked in theme and other subtler ways. On the surface, it’s about raves and DJs, tracing the career of one talented young artist from fan to deejay to a name big enough to travel the world a bit and rub shoulders with the likes of Daft Punk. it’s not about fame and disillusionment, however. This isn’t the life of an artist, as such. Eden rather interestingly shows passion — in this case, for garage music — turning into a job. And a young man slowly realizes that the joy of his youth isn’t going to be enough to sustain him for the rest of his life. What next?

It roams over many years but has a light touch. Since the film isn’t truly interested in deejays as an art form, we don’t spend much time at all learning how they do what they do, to say the least. Our hero Paul (the handsome Felix de Givry) is seen more often being hapless in love than working at his craft. (Seymour would have something to say about that.) The rave scenes are pretty but never quite get under your skin; you can see people reacting to the music and the deejays dancing in ecstasy but it’s all at a slight remove. Perhaps because they know eventually the party will end.

That remove is probably the film’s biggest strength. They’re not making a grand statement about raves, how even the most rebellious art forms become co-opted. They’re not examining the scourge of drugs. They’re not romanticizing or criticizing youthful passion. Eden simply watches life happen; it just so happens that in this case life is often at a rave or disco.

The result is certainly meandering. And surely it’s not a good thing that after more than two hours of film time and years of story we barely have a sense of Paul’s relationship with his artistic partner in deejaying. But de Givry is very compelling, along with Roman Kolinka as an artist friend, and something here has stayed with me a little. Hansen-Love isn’t there yet. But the faith shown in her by festivals like NYFF might pay off yet.

TWO DAYS, ONE NIGHT ** 1/2

The new film by the Dardenne brothers is a disappointment. So often, their movies rank among the best of the year and have for nearly 20 years. They’ve made seven feature films beginning in 1996 and five of them have been great, often really great. Only The Silence of Lorna from 2008 felt like a genuine misfire, with its hokey plot contrivance. They got back on track with 2011’s The Kid With A Bike, a movie that seemed to push their signature style into modest new territory with good effect.

Two Days, One Night however is a noble failure, a step backward as it seems to recapitulate what they’ve done before with more elan. Still, it’s a timely tale with a strong hook and their fans will surely not feel they’ve wasted their time by checking it out. Marion Cotillard stars as a woman who has fallen into a serious depression and is now recovered. Or is that recovering? We stay right on top with Sandra as her story quickly reveals itself. She’s been on leave from work but the owner of the company forced her coworkers to vote: did they want Sandra to get her job back or receive their annual bonus. The company couldn’t afford to do both. After a vote heavily weighted against Sandra, the owner is forced to agree to a new vote. Sandra has the weekend to go visit each of her 16 coworkers and plead for her job… and in the process ask them to give up a 1000 euro bonus.

Two Days, One Night has the usual immediacy of a Dardenne film, movies where the camera is usually perched on the shoulder of the protagonist and never leaves their side. But this film soon feels too episodic, too neatly structured in a way. Each coworker has their own psychodrama on display: one is worried about voting against what the owners want because he’s on a limited contract, another has been wracked with guilt over voting against Sandra and begs her forgiveness, yet another has a troubled marriage, many try to avoid her and of course they can all use (sometimes desperately) that 1000 euros.

Quickly, the meetings between Sandra and her coworkers become too schematic. A happy scene of acceptance is invariably followed by one of rejection or indifference; if one features a poor family, another is sure to feature a family using the bonus for luxuries like a back porch and so on.

Some late twists feel cheap and should have bigger ramifications; others give the tale a much-needed substance. No movie by the Dardennes could be without worth and Cotillard is always a pleasure to watch. But this is a minor entry in their filmography and hopefully just a stumble on the way to the next great work by one of the most talented duos in movie history.

ISIS Launches Canada Unit in Latest Tax Inversion Deal

September X, 2014 — Now that American icon Burger King has agreed to merge with Canadian coffee chain Tim Hortons in a blatant “screw you” to the U.S. Treasury, the trend of moving abroad to save on taxes seems to be catching on. The latest party to take advantage of this is infamous terror group ISIS, which announced through Al Jazeera that it is moving its headquarters to Canada.

“The corporate tax rate in Iraq is just killing us,” said ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. “We can’t function in such an anti-business environment. That’s why we’re so angry all the time. Canada, on the other hand, has a corporate tax rate of only 26.5 percent, which is really awesome. What’s the point of terrorizing and pillaging if we can’t keep most of our spoils?”

This type of ‘tax inversion’ deal has drawn fire in the international community for being unpatriotic but ISIS is undeterred by the criticism. “People don’t understand how burdensome it is to pay taxes twice – once at the corporate level and once at the individual level. Our warriors are being fleeced by the Iraqi government but nobody seems to care. The press never covers that side of the story,” grumbled al-Baghdadi.

Of course, the Canadian government is not very happy about this development and has expressed concern for the safety of its citizens if ISIS moves to its shores.

We asked ISIS for a response to this and their public relations department issued the following statement: “The Canadians have nothing to fear. We feel that they have enough problems already because of their bizarre desire to be French, total lack of ambition, and most of all, their ridiculous accent. We will only be using the Canada office for planning purposes and dissemination of grisly videos to the world but will restrict our terror campaign to the Middle East.”

The U.S. State Department, however, has made it clear that if ISIS moves to Canada, the U.S. government will launch airstrikes against its neighbor — something it has wanted to do for a long time anyway. From a geopolitical standpoint, such posturing could be construed as an act of war but, true to form, the Canadians just said “thank you” and went back to doing nothing. Some analysts even speculate that the Canadians are closet S&M junkies and actually want to be bombed by the U.S.

When asked whether ISIS would change its flag after the move, al-Baghdadi responded: “Does a camel have a hump? Our graphic designers have come up with some really cool ideas, including a maple leaf with bullet holes in it and a moose carrying an AK-47. Please understand that even though we are doing this for tax reasons, we are grateful for Canada’s hospitality and will do everything we can to integrate with the local population there. We also look forward to giving them the divine gift of Sharia law.”

After a pause, the leader of the terror group added: “Of course, if the Canadians disrespect us, we will have no choice but to chop off their heads, but why worry about that now? In any case, they will receive billions of new tax dollars from us so they should be happy about that.” Noting our skepticism, he explained with a grin: “We invested early in Google, made a fricking bundle on it! Not just a pretty face, man…”

So is ISIS just the tip of the Canadian iceberg for such tax inversion deals? Will other terror groups follow and if so, could Canada have finally found a reason for its existence? Who knows but whatever happens, one thing is for certain: if ISIS moves there for a lower tax rate, the Canadian government better not even think about raising it…

Brian Williams Raps ‘Baby Got Back’ In Latest ‘Tonight Show’ Mashup

Oh my God, Becky. Look at this rap.

“The Tonight Show” kicked off its Orlando shows this week with the latest Brian Williams rap mashup. This time, Jimmy Fallon’s team edited clips of the “NBC Nightly News” anchor to perform Sir Mix-a-Lot’s 1992 ballad to the booty “Baby Got Back.”

Fallon has previously mashed up Williams’ clips into other hip-hop classics like “Gin and Juice,” “Straight Outta Compton,” and “Rapper’s Delight,” but we think you’ll find this one is especially epic, and we can not lie.

“The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. ET on NBC.

Kim Kardashian, Kanye West Might Marry In Italy, According To Latest Rumor

The countdown to Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s wedding date is underway, which means more sources are coming out of the woodwork offering information on the big day.

At this point, it’s commonly believed that the couple is planning to tie the knot in Paris on May 24, unless you believe “Entertainment Tonight’s” source who says the wedding will actually take place in Florence, Italy.

michelangelo david florence italy

Florence, huh? The next thing you’ll hear is that Kimye is planning on saying “I do” in front of Michelangelo’s David, right? (We’re not saying that’s happening for those of you who don’t understand sarcasm.) Well, according to “ET’s” source, Kimye’s guests can expect a pre-wedding dinner in Paris, but then the couple will fly their guests in private planes to Florence to the actual wedding ceremony, because they obviously want to bring new meaning to the term “destination wedding.”

With just nine days to go until their nuptials, you can be sure there will be many more wedding reports and rumors, and yes, it’s going to be exhausting.
