Jennifer Lopez Knocks Red Carpet Gown Out Of The Park At Billboard Latin Music Awards

Jennifer Lopez hit a few home runs of her own at the Billboard Latin Music Awards.

Given her romance with Yankees great Alex Rodriguez, we thought a few baseball metaphors might be in order.

It’s fair to say she swung for the fashion fences on the red carpet Thursday at the awards in Miami, wearing a net-like gown that barely covered all the bases.

And it was a hit, People said.

Take a look:

The ensemble got an assist  from Jimmy Choo heels. Her stylists Rob and Mariel told Billboard the fashion choice was “totally unexpected and classic Jen.”

Lopez, 47, didn’t strike out in the Julien Macdonald number that she wore during the ceremony either.

Lopez had a busy night, performing “Mirate” from her upcoming Spanish-language album while accepting the Telemundo Star Award and Social Artist of the Year award.

Havana Ball: Chanel Gives Cruise a Latin Beat

HAVANA – Here’s a little-known fact about Karl Lagerfeld: He’s a massive fan of Latin music, which he reckons is in the throes of a comeback.
“Mambo No. 5” by Xavier Cugat, who popularized the genre in America in the Forties and Fifties, is a particular favorite.
Probably even lesser known is the fact that Lagerfeld was once a cha-cha and tango champion. The German designer took lessons in his early days in Paris at the Georges & Rosy dance academy on the Rue de Varenne, and would practice in nightclubs.
“I won contests,” Lagerfeld said Monday as he put the finishing touches on Chanel’s cruise collection, which he dubbed “Coco Cuba” and paraded Tuesday night on El Paseo del Prado, a handsome tree-lined boulevard framed by four statues of lions, a symbol of Chanel.
The audience took in the open-air show seated on park benches as the Latin beats ricocheted off the handsome buildings, capturing the essence of lively, steamy Havana, where music leaks from open windows at night and dancing can spontaneously erupt on sidewalks.
The collection riffed lightly on Cuban-isms: The neat vertical pleats of guayaberas — typical men’s shirts — were incorporated into Chanel jackets; beach-y colors and slogans were splashed

Juanes And Cedric Gervais Fuse Latin Pop With EDM In New ‘Este Amor’ Single

Juanes’ tender lyrics get amped in the Colombian singer’s newest single.

In a track that may possibly be a first of its kind, the Spanish-language artist dipped into the electronic dance music genre with “Este Amor,” a new single created in collaboration with Grammy-winning French DJ and producer Cedric Gervais.

Gervais surprised a sea of fans during his scheduled set at the Sunset Music Festival in Tampa, Florida, on Saturday, when he brought Juanes on stage to publicly debut the song.

After asking the crowd, “Donde esta mi gente Latina!?” (Where are my Latin people!?) in his best Spanish, Gervais said he wanted to welcome one of his favorite artists to perform the “never been done before” track.

Juanes shared a behind-the-scenes video of the moment and the performance on Facebook Tuesday.

Qué bien la pasamos en #SunsetFestival junto a Cedric Gervais. Inolvidable. #EsteAmor

Posted by Juanes on Martes, 26 de mayo de 2015

The new single will be released soon, though a date has yet to be announced. Juanes told The Huffington Post the collaboration came about after Gervais reached out to him with the idea.

“I feel very happy to be able to experiment with a different genre of music,” Juanes told HuffPost. “I’ve loved electronic music for many years and I think that I couldn’t be in better company than with Cedric.”

“The invitation came from him and the truth is that it was a different experience creating this song,” he added. “Obviously when I wrote it I wasn’t thinking about any electronic arrangement because he would be doing that. He simply just gave me a [beats per minute] and over that bpm I began to work on the melodies and lyrics with my acoustic guitar. Eventually he took the song to another level. And the truth is I’m very happy with the result. It’s a new experience for me and it enriches me greatly.”

Promoting Silicon Valleys in Latin America: Lessons from Costa Rica

Promoting Silicon Valleys in Latin America: Lessons from Costa Rica

The spectacular economic performance of China, East Asia and India during the last ten years has ignited some profound changes in the world economy. The share of global demand, investments, trade and production of the traditional industrialized powers, the US, Europe and Japan, has gradually yet continuously declined. This rise of China also has implications for Latin America. On the one hand, booming Chinese demand for raw materials and food has sustained the economic performance of Latin America during the last decade. On the other hand, the competitiveness of China and as a hub for advanced manufacturing is threatening Latin America’s attempt to diversify its economy from its dependence on the export of natural resource-based goods. Most Latin American countries are not however waiting passively for their economies to become ever more reliant on high prices for food, minerals and oil. Leveraging the economic and political stability that they achieved during the last decades, many countries in the region, such as Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica and Uruguay, are attempting to capture the growing market for knowledge intensive products and services by breeding their own Silicon Valleys. This book discusses the promotion of ICT clusters in Latin America by analyzing the development of the Costa Rican cluster in particular, an often celebrated case of successful policy in the region. Costa Rica, a small country traditionally known for its coffee and wildlife, managed to build an information technology cluster within ten years, becoming the leading producer of ICT per capita in Latin America. Studying the Costa Rican case provides a solid starting point for understanding the challenges of building ICT clusters in Latin America.

‘Bravetown’ Director Tells Why Latin Americans Can Relate To Theme Of Losing Family To War

Daniel Duran has made a name for himself directing music videos for some the world’s biggest Latin stars. Now, the 35-year-old Venezuelan-born director has combined his passion for music with a dramatic script for his first feature film, “Bravetown.”

Duran’s directorial debut focuses on 17-year-old New York City teen Josh Harvest (Lucas Till, “X-Men: First Class”), who is a troubled but talented DJ sent to spend time with his estranged father (Josh Duhamel) after an accidental drug overdose. As Josh arrives to deal with his own family problems, he begins to realize that residents of the small Army town in North Dakota are struggling to come to terms with losing many of their loved ones to war.

“Bravetown” also includes performances by Kherington Payne (“Fame”) and Oscar-nominated actress Laura Dern (“Wild”), as a clinically depressed mother unable to cope with the loss of her son.

Duran recently discussed the film with The Huffington Post via email. He opened up about how his relationship with his father connects him to the film, and how many Latin Americans can identify with the movie’s theme of losing loved ones to violence.

daniel duran
Director Daniel Duran (left) and actor Josh Duhamel on the set of “Bravetown.”

You were born and raised in Venezuela. How did you end up doing a film that deals with topics like the trauma of returning war veterans and how a town in middle America is dealing losing loved ones to war?

From the start, the theme was something I felt was very universal because it’s a story about a DJ that has these personal and family problems — problems that affect anyone in the world, from any nationality — and that was my main focus.

I think when you deal with conflicts concerning family, love, heartbreak, father-son relationships, they’re topics that anyone can identify with and that’s where I got hooked in this project. Plus, the movie is charged with music and I come from that world with my music video [background]. It was easy for me to understand Josh’s musical world and how he used music to deal with the whirlwind of emotions he was living. It is a movie that exists in a totally American world, but at the same time it touches upon very universal themes.

How did you feel personally connected to the story?

I feel I connected with the emotions. I also come from a family with separated parents, in which I didn’t have a relationship with my father. The difference is that Josh experienced that as a teenager, and for me it was imagining what that relationship would’ve been like. But unlike Josh, my relationship with my mother has always been spectacular and I never had the type of issues he had [with his mom.]

On the other hand, I felt I identified with Josh’s musical connection as a DJ because music has always been present in my life and in my creations. One of the things I’ve always liked is to talk to young people and I feel that his movie connects with teens, because despite it being a very mature story, it is seen from their point of view.

What kind of obstacles did you face while working on “Bravetown?”

This was my first film and it was a big cast. I think my first obstacle was how to face that challenge and the insecurity I had at one point about being able to succeed. Having English be my second language was also a big obstacle, to think that at some point I wasn’t going to be able to communicate exactly what I wanted. Thank God I had the proper words to be able to express what I wanted to the crew and cast, to be able to steer the wheel of this boat.

Back to the theme of losing loved ones to war and how you deal with that, there are plenty of people in Latin America who can relate to what it’s like to lose someone to violence.

Perhaps in Latin American countries we don’t lose soldiers, but we have a high percentage of deaths caused by crime. That’s a kind of war with which we’ve have to deal. I think that people from other countries will identify with “Bravetown,” because it’s that feeling of losing a loved one to violence that creates wounds that are difficult to heal. And how you face that loss, that is the important point of the movie.

What was it like working with Laura Dern, who recently was nominated for the Oscar for “Wild”?

Laura is a true lady and working with her was incredible — a delight. I learned a lot from her. For me it was an experience to create that character with her because it was written one way and when we sat down to talk, we gave it a different tone. That’s the magic that happens when you work with someone with her talent.

This was your first film, but what can we expect from you in the future?

I want to continue telling great stories and entertaining. Right now I’m focused on closing the chapter with “Bravetown,” but I am starting to read and write ideas. But I don’t know what’s coming yet.

And now that you are closing the chapter, how do you feel about your first film?

I feel very happy, excited and enthusiastic about people seeing my first project. I think it was an incredible project with an excellent cast. … I [also] had the opportunity to work with my director of photography Angel Berroeta — who has been with me since my music videos and with pride I can say he’s from Maracay, Venezuela — Salvadorian writer Oscar Torres, Argentine production designer Tomas Voth, Venezuelan composer Angelo Milli. You could say this was a movie made by Latinos for Americans, and that makes me very proud.

“Bravetown” will be in select theaters beginning on Friday, May 8.

CORRECTION: This article has been edited to correct the reference to Laura Dern, who has been nominated for Oscars twice, but has not won.

The Century of U.S.Capitalism in Latin America

The Century of U.S.Capitalism in Latin America

This book addresses two issues basic to understanding modern Latin America: the role of American-owned businesses in the region and, of equal importance, the reaction of Latin Americans to foreign investment. Throughout the nineteenth century and up to the 1930s, American corporations stridently resisted local opposition as they secured what they wanted in Latin America, cheap labor, plentiful raw materials, and favorable business conditions. After World War II, Latin American nationalism and revolutions forced American-owned enterprises to redefine their business model throughout the region. U.S. businesses integrated themselves into local societies through direct investment in manufacturing and the creation of broad-based consumer societies eager to buy everything from Coca-Cola to Chevrolets. As a new century dawns, multinational corporations aided by NAFTA ensure computers and cellular phones are as sought after as soft drinks and cars were in earlier eras. The first book on U.S. business activity in Latin America intended specifically for student readers, this account offers a balanced and insightful understanding of the nature of capitalism abroad. In assessing how U.S.-Latin American relations have been shaped by foreign investment, O’Brien argues that over the course of the twentieth century U.S. businesses and their government have forged a close working alliance to promote American interests in Latin America.

“In approaching this vast topic, Gates displays disarming modesty and enthusiasm; his tone is that of a letter from a perceptive friend who can’t wait to share what he’s learned.” -The New Yorker 12.5 million Africans were shipped to the New World during the Middle Passage. While just over 11.0 million survived the arduous journey, only about 450,000 of them arrived in the United States. The rest—over ten and a half million—were taken to the Caribbean and Latin America. This astonishing fact changes our entire picture of the history of slavery in the Western hemisphere, and of its lasting cultural impact. These millions of Africans created new and vibrant cultures, magnificently compelling syntheses of various African, English, French, Portuguese, and Spanish influences. Despite their great numbers, the cultural and social worlds that they created remain largely unknown to most Americans, except for certain popular, cross-over musical forms. So Henry Louis Gates, Jr. set out on a quest to discover how Latin Americans of African descent live now, and how the countries of their acknowledge—or deny—their African past; how the fact of race and African ancestry play themselves out in the multicultural worlds of the Caribbean and Latin America. Starting with the slave experience and extending to the present, Gates unveils the history of the African presence in six Latin American countries—Brazil, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Mexico, and Peru—through art, music, cuisine, dance, politics, and religion, but also the very palpable presence of anti-black racism that has sometimes sought to keep the black cultural presence from view. In Brazil, he delves behind the façade of Carnaval to discover how this ‘rainbow nation’ is waking up to its legacy as the world’s largest slave economy.
