Lena Dunham Says She Has 19 People Ready to Stop Her from Tweeting

Keeping Lena Dunham out of trouble on social media isn’t a one-person job.

During a packed panel at South by Southwest in Austin on Saturday entitled “Authenticity and Media in 2018,” the often outspoken 31-year-old — who was making her first public appearance since her hysterectomy — revealed how she tries to keep herself out of hot water on social media.

Acknowledging her history of creating controversies — and then issuing public apologies — Dunham admitted during a talk with new Glamour editor-in-chief Samantha Barry that the pattern had become somewhat of a running joke (there’s even a Twitter bot called “Lena Dunham Apologizes”).

“These articles come out that say, ‘Lena Dunham apologies for like the 87th’ time,’ that was how I was raised,” she said. “We try and we fail and we try again. We think the problem from another angle and we grow.”

So how does she safeguard herself in the future from the backlash the apologies repeatedly stir up?

“I have about 19 people ready to stop me from tweeting. Many of them paid,” she joked.

But while Dunham has been known to stir up controversy, she said that the “shame” from causing an uproar “goes away really fast.”

“I’ll have two moments. One is full of shame and like, ‘I should never have been let out of my house in the first place.’ Or like, ‘Nobody even deserves me or my truth.’ But it goes away really fast and it’s kind of the only thing that I know how to do,” she said.

Opening up about her recent hysterectomy, the Girls star noted how much the outpouring of support has meant to her — and how she wasn’t expecting it.

“The only person I’d heard of with hysterectomies was like my 67 year old grandmother, I just didn’t know that we were out there,” Dunham said.

“The amount of people I am having conversations about gynecological health with in public places is off the charts. But I like it,” she said. “I’d rather do that then exchange fake pleasantries. It was only three months ago.”

The often self-deprecating writer also poked fun of her own tousled hair style saying, “Well I hoped that the hairstyle would speak to the authenticity of this panel.”

Although Dunham went on to say that she doesn’t have “whatever the skill set is that allows you to program your own image from the outside and make calculated decisions about how you want to come across,” she pointed out that she didn’t think that was always such a bad thing.

“I think authenticity comes in many forms and it doesn’t just have to be that you didn’t just do your hair right. People confuse authentic with the idea of messy or broken and I think Anna Wintour is authentic and she’s had that haircut for a f— long time.”

Dunham also admitted that “a big part of” growing up for her has meant “moving away from this sense that I need to have an opinion about everything.”

“I didn’t get in to this to be a perfect celebrity model. I don’t know how to do it,” she said. “That is not where my skill set lies and I think a big part of my 30s is moving away from this sense that I need to have an opinion about everything and taking a moment to think before I speak,” she added.

“Now I find myself wanting to slow down and think about how I can give other women the platform that was given to me. How I can speak through my work. And I hope that this is maturing. I think it is. I can’t be sure. I still wear my hair like this.”

Lena Dunham Is Selling 169 Pieces from Her Wardrobe to Support Planned Parenthood

If there’s one thing Lena Dunham takes as seriously as her acting, writing, and directing career, her undying love for Lisa Simpson, or being an advocate for ladies everywhere attempting to regrow their sparse, patchy eyebrows, it’s undoubtedly her passion for women’s rights and equality, a cause she has become increasingly vocal about since the last presidential election. So when the Girls star decided it was time to purge her wardrobe, it makes sense that she would want to do so for a good cause, teaming up with Planned Parenthood to make sure that new dress you buy straight out of her closet doesn’t just look good, it does good, too.

Dunham announced this latest endeavor via a piece in the New York Times on Sunday, revealing that she would be putting 169 pieces of clothing from her personal collection up for sale on the consignment site The Real Real, with the entirely of her 70% commission rate going to the women’s health organization. The items will range from a size 4 to a size 12, and even the Elizabeth Kennedy gown she wore to the 2017 Met Gala will be up for sale for a mere $ 4,000.

She told the newspaper, “I realized I had been carrying around a lot of crap, both internally and externally. I always thought I was going to hoard all my clothes for my future daughter, and now I understand, especially being a woman with a reproductive illness, I may end up with an adopted son, I may end up with a daughter who doesn’t identify with her gender at birth. You can’t live for the future that does not yet exist. I have to take all this good fashion fortune I’ve had and spread it.”

Dunham also added in an Instagram post marking the start of the charity sale, “I’ve been lucky enough to own some truly special (often custom) pieces from innovative designers and selling items that have been worn down Brooklyn streets, on the set of GIRLS and at awards shows and book signings. Each purchase will come with a note from me that documents my experience wearing the piece. I hope you enjoy the pieces and the stories behind them.”

Lena Dunham Isn’t Joking Anymore With Body-Positive Nude Selfie

Seeing Lena Dunham nude may barely get a rise out of “Girls” viewers who, over five seasons, witnessed the creator push the boundaries of body positivity on the small screen. But Dunham isn’t done exploring (or exposing) herself yet.

On Thursday, she shared an emoji-decorated nude selfie that speaks to her evolving relationship with her body.

Dunham’s perspective has shifted amid her ongoing health battle. Instead of using her body as “fodder for jokes,” now she’s all about feeling comfortable in the skin she’s in.

In the photo, the “Girls” creator bares it all, highlighting her impressive collection of tattoos, including her Rihanna-inspired “tit chandelier,” while two pear emojis and a honey pot cover some NSFW spots.

“I spent so many years loving my body but thinking it wasn’t lovable by others ― its sole purpose was to be fodder for jokes. I performed the insult so no one else could,” Dunham wrote in the caption. “I don’t regret any of it ― that’s my art and that was my truth ― but now, at age 31, having been through hell and back with my health and other people’s perceptions of my physicality, I feel deeply comfortable with the idea that this pear-shaped pot of honey is equally good for making people laugh and laying out like a Suicide Girl circa 2004. Love it all.”

A post shared by Lena Dunham (@lenadunham) on

The multi-hyphenate creator canceled her Lenny Letter tour last month due health concerns, revealing she’s in the “greatest amount of physical pain” she’s ever experienced. Dunham has long suffered from endometriosis, which has sidelined her in recent weeks, after she was rushed to the emergency room following a red carpet appearance at the Met Gala.

“After being told I was endometriosis-free after my last procedure, more disease was found in deeper spots that required immediate surgery and now physical therapy,” Dunham wrote in a note on social media after the event. “This disease is wily and unrelenting, and Im really blessed to have a community, both online and IRL, who let me express how hard that is.”

She’s been on the mend since then, spending time with family, resting at home and ― if this nude selfie is any indication ― slowly getting back to normal.

Wear LACMA Program Taps Kendall Conrad, Lena Wald and Outerknown

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art, known as LACMA, has chosen three more L.A.-based designers for its latest Wear LACMA Collection: Kendall Conrad, Lena Wald and Outerknown. An initiative of the museum’s Director’s Circle, Wear LACMA is an art and fashion project featuring limited-edition pieces created by local designers and inspired by the museum’s permanent collection and exhibitions.
“One of the great things about Los Angeles is that there are so many creative people here in the city. With Wear LACMA, we love partnering with Los Angeles based-designers for their unique perspectives and diverse backgrounds. The way these designers have been inspired by the museum’s collection allows us to look closer at these works and appreciate them in a different way,” said Katherine Ross, founder of Wear LACMA. “This season’s selections from Kendall Conrad, Outerknown and Lena Wald perfectly reflect the original mission of the Wear LACMA project and spotlight incredible works of art.”

Lena Wald rings for the latest Wear LACMA collection.

Conrad created two leather goods and a jewelry item inspired by an ancient handled weight from Afghanistan that depicts primitive scorpions surrounding a fruit bearing palm tree. “This artwork first caught my eye because it was in the shape of a bag, but the carved image

Note To Us Weekly: Lena Dunham Doesn’t Have Any ‘Diet Tips’

Tip No. 1: How about we all just don’t.

She’s said it once, and now she’s saying it again: Lena Dunham has zero interest in becoming the poster child for weight loss or dieting.

In the latest round of media attempts to make Dunham into something she’s not, Us Weekly put a photo of the “Girls” creator on the cover of a recent issue with a teasing caption, “how she gets motivated,” next to a story promising “diet tips” in big, bold capital letters.

Dunham took the opportunity to offer up some of her own suggestions over Instagram on Sunday with a list of tips ranging from “a quiet rage that replaces need for food with need for revenge” to “an election that reveals the true depths of American misogyny,” and “um, who the fuck cares?”

Our personal favorite? Dunham’s final tip, which sums up her thoughts on the issue: “I have no tips. I give no tips. I don’t want to be on this cover [because] it’s diametrically opposed to everything I’ve fought my whole career for, and it’s not a compliment to me because it’s not an achievement, thanx.”

20 slimdown diet tips! 1. anxiety disorder * 2. resultant constant nausea 3. an election that reveals the true depths of American misogyny 4. constant sweaty dreams of dystopian future 5. abdominal adhesions pinning ovary below uterus * 6. baseless but still harrowing threats to physical safety online and through smail mail 7. watching institutions you love from Planned Parenthood to PBS be threatened by cartoon mustache-twirling villains 8. finally realizing superheroes aren't real (specifically the X-Factor, really thought they'd handle this) 9. marching your ass off 10. a quiet rage that replaces need for food with need for revenge 11. sleeping 19 hours a day 12. realizing that even the liberal media wants dem clicks no matter whut 13. worrying ceaselessly about the health and safety of women you know and women you don't 14. realizing who ya real friends are 15. having to switch from Uber to Lyft (lots of calories burned trying to understand a new app, then even more trying to understand if the conflict was resolved) 16. bladder spasms, urinary frequency and urgency * 17. having your phone number leaked and violent images texted to your phone by randos under names like VERYFATCHUCKYBOY@creepz.com 18. keeping your back arched against the wind 19. um, who the fuck cares? 20. I have no tips I give no tips I don't want to be on this cover cuz it's diametrically opposed to everything I've fought my whole career for and it's not a compliment to me because it's not an achievement thanx * Star indicates a pre-existing condition

Dunham has been the target of media fascination due to her apparent recent weight loss, which stemmed from her battle with endometriosis. The chronic disorder led her to seek out trainer Tracy Anderson, who helped counsel the actress in fitness to alleviate her pain and anxiety.

After her appearance at one of Anderson’s fitness events triggered headlines around the internet about Dunham looking “happy and healthy” with before-and-after photos, she took to social media to reiterate how she doesn’t give the “tiniest of shits what anyone else feels about my body.”

“My weight loss isn’t a triumph and it also isn’t some sign I’ve finally given in to the voices of trolls. Because my body belongs to ME ― at every phase, in every iteration, and whatever I’m doing with it,” she wrote on Instagram in March. “I refuse to celebrate these bullshit before-and-after pictures. Don’t we have infinitely more pressing news to attend to?”

Zac Posen Used To Style Lena Dunham’s Hair On Their Commute To School

Before Zac Posen was outfitting Lena Dunham in a canary yellow gown for the 2014 Golden Globes, he was holding her hand on New York City public transportation as her babysitter.

“Oh Boy. I must’ve been like 17 or 18 and it was my high school job to take her on the train to school we went to. She was younger than I was and we’d take the subway,” the fashion designer recalled in a Thursday conversation with HuffPost Live.

But the fun hardly stopped there. Posen continued:

I’d pick her up and I’d re-do her hair. That’s what I’d do. I’d re-do her hair to go on the train. I was dressing quite outrageously at the time. I was trying to dress to understand how people react to [clothes]… I’d wear ivy in my hair, platform sneakers. We had fun.

The two would converse about “popular events,” as well, he recounted.

“We’d make up stories on the subway. I’m sure there was like, funny dances on the poles of the subway. We had a blast.”

Lena Dunham Wants To Turn ‘Catherine, Called Birdy’ Into A Movie

Lena Dunham discussed a wide array of topics with writer and author Ariel Levy during the 15th annual New Yorker Festival on Friday night, including her aspirations to turn Karen Cushman’s “Catherine, Called Birdy” into a feature film.

“This is actually my first time talking about it publicly,” Dunham said about the project. “I’m very excited about it. I’m not sure when it’ll happen, but I’m in the process of [working on it].”

Written by Cushman, the 1994 novel — which won the Newbury Prize in 1995 — tells the story of Catherine, a 12-year-old coming of age in 1290 England. “[She] gets her period and her father basically says, ‘Well, it’s time for you to get married,’ and she’s like, ‘Uh, no,'” Dunham told the crowd. “But it’s hyper realistic and really pretty and it’s full of incest and beatings, but it’s a child’s story. I’ve been obsessed with it since I was a kid.” Dunham previously cited “Catherine, Called Birdy” as one of the two best books she’s ever read about young girls in an interview with the New York Times in 2012. (Her other selection was Vladimir Nabokov’s “Lolita.”)

“It’s a really interesting examination of sort of like coming of age and what’s expected of teenage girls,” Dunham said. “I’m going to adapt it and hopefully direct it, I just need to find someone who wants to fund a PG-13 medieval movie.”

Dunham plans to produce the film through A Casual Romance, the production company she started with “Girls” executive producer Jenni Konner. According the 28-year-old, “Catherine, Called Birdy” is one of many projects the duo are working on at the moment “that sort of aren’t set in the here and now.”

“Nothing I’ve done so far has required any research of any real kind beyond, like, going to a diner,” Dunham said, acknowledging how “Catherine, Called Birdy” is not necessarily what some fans have come to expect from her as a writer-director. “So this is a whole other world. But the source material makes me so happy and I’m so excited, because I’ve been working on ‘Girls’ [for five years] and I also wrote this book of personal essays. So the idea of engaging with some of these topics that are important to me, which are — surprise — women and feminism, but finding a way to kind of look at them through a historical lens is sort of like where feel myself going.”

Dunham, who is currently promoting her new book, “Not That Kind of Girl,” said she’ll connect with Cushman to discuss “Catherine, Called Birdy” during a visit to Seattle next weekend.

I Love Lena

HERE are some things you may know about Lena Dunham, if you happen to have opened the pages of any New York periodical at any point in the last few years.

Why Lena Dunham Is My Role Model

These days, it’s not really that unique for a woman to be running a television show and acting in it. We’ve seen it be done many times over the years. But, what makes Lena Dunham (writer, director, creator, Wonder Woman behind HBO’s Girls) stand out so much to me is her authenticity. It was clear from the first time I watched her show, even though I was a freshman in high school and didn’t understand about half of the cultural references, that she was different. That day, I laid eyes on the woman who would influence many of my ideas, words and fashion choices and ultimately inspire me to just be, well, me.

Of course, throughout my whole life, I was always “me.” I didn’t have a body switch incident (maybe one day). But, reading Lena Dunham’s honest tweets about everything from serious business like the Woody Allen rape allegations to simple things like meeting a dog named Yvonne made having clear opinions, things scarcely seen in high school, so desirable. Though I’ve never met a dog named Yvonne (maybe one day), Lena just gets it. I always used to feel that by letting the world know what I was thinking, I was being overindulgent, and my opinion would be discarded or rejected by society. Lena Dunham has taught me an important lesson: Who cares?

Lena, or L-Duhnz, as I called her in the dream I had where we ran into each other at a local Starbucks, conjures honest but hardly ever seen on television themes and incidents into her show, like the human body, and lets them loose in the flesh (no pun intended). She even delves into her own past of growing up with OCD and illustrates it beautifully, making me feel like I fought that battle with her even though I didn’t. She has shown me that everybody heals differently and there are many ways to cope with life’s difficulties. Before watching Girls, it never occurred to me that talking about your feelings wasn’t the only way to let them go. That is why I felt a constant tornado of teen angst and feelings, because I don’t particularly enjoy talking. But, Lena Dunham’s character Hannah Horvath’s experiences let me know that instead of having to assemble careful sentences to somebody I don’t like, I can dance to Robyn’s “Dancing on My Own,” or sing “Wonderwall” in the bathtub and feel just as liberated.

I know Lena Dunham may not seem like your average role model. I still remember the look on my mother’s face when I accidentally let it slip that I had already watched two seasons of Girls. We all make sacrifices. But Lena Dunham has a three-dimensional, genuine vibe that will always find her place in my heart to be above all others. Yes, I know she writes scenes where she is completely naked doing the dirty. But, do you do it with your clothes on? Yes, I know she writes scenes where she snorts cocaine off a toilet seat. But, has no twentysomething in New York ever snorted cocaine? America has been afraid to approach “touchy subjects” in their media, and only ever showing modesty and purity is making people ashamed of their own bodies and allured by activities deemed too inappropriate for television. Also, if you recall, I didn’t say my lesson from Lena Dunham was “please everyone.”

I remember a line from Girls where Shoshanna says something about having to break a few eggs to accomplish what she wanted to do and it stuck in my head. To this day I can’t look at an egg without thinking of Shosh’s message. Lena Dunham showed me that you can either follow the rules and be good, or you can follow your dreams and be great.
