Richard Quinn Collaborates With Liberty on an Accessories Collection

ROUND TWO: Richard Quinn has put his personal, colorful touch on Liberty London’s floral prints for a limited-edition accessories collection that will launch on July 11. Quinn and Liberty first collaborated in 2017 after Quinn used a Liberty print for his graduate show. The following year, the department store hosted Quinn’s runway debut.
The designer had free access to Liberty’s extensive archive, which consists of 45,000 prints. He chose prints from the Sixties, Seventies and the Nineties and modernized them, magnifying and mashing them up on tote bags, purses, cardholders and scarves.
Quinn also reintroduced the Liberty logo in his own cursive handwriting during his spring 2018 show and it has been printed and embroidered on the front of his accessories collection. Prices range from 70 pounds for a silk scarf to 695 pounds for Liberty’s signature Marlborough tote with Quinn’s distorted prints.
“We, at Liberty, have always prided ourselves on discovering and fostering new talent, as our founder Arthur Lasenby Liberty sourced artists and craftsmen from around the world,” said Amelia Hornblow, director of product at Liberty.
“We are thrilled to be working with Richard Quinn, a great talent, whose collection and designs feature color and print that embody the Liberty Spirit.”
The collection will

Bella Freud Unveils Psychoanalysis Fragrance and Perfume at Liberty

FREUD’S FRAGRANCE: “I wanted it to conjure up this feeling of thoughtfulness and romance,” said Bella Freud at the launch of her latest unisex fragrance, Psychoanalysis, in London on Thursday evening.
Held at the perfume department on the ground level of Liberty, there were tiered displays of the fragrances and candles. The fashion designer daughter of the late painter Lucian Freud and great-granddaughter of Sigmund (no doubt hence the fragrance’s name) said that the name is also derived from the notion of a romantic obsession. “It’s the idea that it’s a journey,” said Freud. “It is the idea of psycho-analysis. When you trust somebody enough to take you to another stage and sometimes you fall in love along the way. I wanted it to smell like something which is very, well, the perfume is very comforting – memory.”
Psychoanalysis contains notes such as neroli, petitgrain and cedarwood, while the candle features hints of neroli and lilac flowers and amber. The fragrance retails for 165 pounds for a 100ml bottle of eau de parfum, while the candle is priced at 45 pounds. They are sold exclusively at Liberty and on libertylondon.com.
This is her fifth fragrance to date. Last year, the designer launched Close

Capsule, Liberty Fairs to Add Consumer Component Via Frenzy App

Shopify’s flash sales app Frenzy continues its push to grow its business in the U.S., striking a partnership with Liberty Fairs and Capsule tied to New York Fashion Week: Men’s.
The app, which has made some inroads within streetwear as a tool to help brands and retailers with product drops, will help make certain pieces from designers available for sale through its app as part of special presentations happening at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in conjunction with the Capsule and Liberty Fairs trade shows.
“There’s never been an official partnership between the trade fairs and the CFDA so fashion week now extends to market week,” said Capsule director Christopher Corrado.
Layering in the capabilities of Frenzy adds to that partnership, Corrado continued.
“It really does lay the path for the future of the way that we hope to engage consumers in our trade event.…There’s been obviously a lot of conversation around the seasonality of the fashion industry and how we capitalize on all the excitement that happens around a runway presentation and how we actually engage the end consumer and that’s exactly what Frenzy does from an event producer opinion.”
Participating brands include Band of Outsiders, Arc’teryx Veilance, Necessity Sense, Daniel Patrick, DDugoff

Liberty, Capsule to Move Men’s Shows to Javits in July

Liberty Fairs and Capsule Show are on the move — at least for a little while.
The trade shows were unable to secure their usual location at Pier 94 for the spring men’s wear shows in July and will move to the Jacob Javits Convention Center where Project and MRket will also be holding their shows.
However, Liberty and Capsule said the move is temporary and they will be back at Pier 94 for the January 2018 editions of their shows.
“No matter where we travel, our vision remains the same — create enjoyable and memorable experiences for brands, retailers and editors,” said Sam Ben-Avraham, founder of Liberty Fairs. “I am excited for attendees to make long-lasting connections at The Javits and another successful season. To me, the venue itself is less important than the connections and experiences happening inside and I look forward to channeling our unique vision through a new location.”
Deirdre Maloney, cofounder of Capsule, added: “Colocating with Liberty has been great for the market. But this summer with our shows and the UBM shows all at Javits, we expect buyers will be in paradise.”
Capsule joined Liberty at Pier 94 for the first time in January of 2016, leaving its former home

This rich story reminds us that America can be at its best as a melting pot. A page-turner for all the right reasons.” -VINCE VAWTER, Newbery Honor-winning author of Paperboy In this gripping and poignant companion to Sydney Taylor Honor Award winner Black Radishes, Gustave faces racism and anti-Semitism in New York City during World War II, but ultimately finds friendship and hope. After escaping the Germans in Nazi-occupied France, Gustave and his family have made it to America at last. But life is not easy in New York. Gustave’s clothes are all wrong, he can barely speak English, and he is worried about his best friend, Marcel, who is in danger back in France. Then there is September Rose, the most interesting girl in school, who doesn’t seem to want to be friends with him. Gustave is starting to notice that not everyone in America is treated equally, and his new country isn’t everything he’d expected. The Terror Conspiracy: Deception, 9;11 and the Loss of Liberty

The Terror Conspiracy: Deception, 9;11 and the Loss of Liberty

Jim Marrs presents the official government pronouncement on 9/11 as an obvious conspiracy. The only question is whose conspiracy it was. According to the government, the conspiracy involved about nineteen suicidal Middle Eastern Muslim terrorists, their hearts full of hatred for American freedom and democracy, who hijacked four airliners, crashing two into the Twin Towers of New York Citys World Trade Center and a third into the Pentagon, near Washington, DC. The fourth airliner reportedly crashed in western Pennsylvania after passengers attempted to overcome the hijackers. To add insult to injury, this whole incredible Mission Impossible operation, which defeated a forty-billion-dollar defense system, was under the total control of a devout Muslim cleric using a computer while hiding in a cave in Afghanistan. Primarily using mainstream media and government reports, Marrs has crafted the definitive journalistic account exposing the likely complicity of the Bush administration in the 9/11 attacks, providing a history of the overt and covert causes of the events. However, his analysis goes far beyond 9/11, enabling us to understand the motivation behind American foreign policy, with the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq as primary examples of the US governments secret agenda.

Knives, Lipstick, and Liberty One Woman’s Journey

Knives, Lipstick, and Liberty One Woman’s Journey

Knives, Lipstick and Liberty – One Woman’s Journey is Jenn’s story, in her own words, on how in five short years she went from not being involved in politics at all to being recognized around the country for her knife advocacy, and her success in changing laws in her own state.”Not only is Jenn Coffey an inspiration for her many New Hampshire constituents, but she has won over scores of knife enthusiasts worldwide for her efforts in championing the idea that their right to own and carry their knives when they want to and where they want to is their inalienable right. In my business, it doesn’t get much better than that.” – Steve Shackleford, Editor, Blade MagazineThe Coffey Chronicles by Annmarie Timmins Concord Monitor staffWatch state Rep. Jenn Coffey on the floor of the House and you’d think she was swaddled from infancy in the “Don’t Tread on Me” flag. An Andover Republican, Coffey is pro-gun, anti-regulation and well-versed in the Constitution. She could be the poster girl for the Free State Project, the Republican Liberty Caucus and the Second Amendment Sisters. It was Coffey, after all, who sponsored a bill last year requiring the state to post warning signs at the Massachusetts border so gun owners wouldn’t be caught unaware in the anti-gun Bay State. Turns out, that’s the new Jenn Coffey. Seven years ago, Coffey was a Massachusetts resident (true!) who viewed her husband’s political rants about government intrusion as “background noise,” according to an autobiography she’s written. The title is fantastic: Knives, Lipstick and Liberty.”There were times when (my husband) Billy would point out certain things about the direction our country was headed in, and I would nod my head in a ‘Yes, Dear’ fashion and then forget about it,” Coffey writes. “Sometimes I would tell him he was nuts and getting into conspiracy junk.”The couple argued over radio stations: he wanted to listen to “political crap” and she wanted to hear music. That all changed one day in 2004 when Coff

How Sex Became a Civil Liberty

How Sex Became a Civil Liberty

How Sex Became a Civil Liberty is the first book to show how and why we have come to see sexual expression, sexual practice, and sexual privacy as fundamental rights. Using rich archival sources and oral interviews, historian Leigh Ann Wheeler shows how the private lives of women and men in the American Civil Liberties Union shaped their understanding of sexual rights as they built the constitutional foundation for the twentieth-century’s sexual revolutions. Wheeler introduces readers to a number of fascinating figures, including ACLU founders Crystal Eastman and Roger Baldwin; nudists, victims of involuntary sterilization, and others who appealed to the organization for help; as well as attorneys like Dorothy Kenyon, Harriet Pilpel, and Melvin Wulf, who pushed the ACLU to tackle such controversial issues as abortion and homosexuality. It demonstrates how their work with the American Birth Control League, Planned Parenthood Federation, Kinsey Institute, Playboy magazine, and other organizations influenced the ACLU’s agenda. Wheeler explores the ACLU’s prominent role in nearly every major court decision related to sexuality while examining how the ACLU also promoted its agenda through grassroots activism, political action, and public education. She shows how the ACLU helped to collapse distinctions between public and private in ways that privileged access to sexual expression over protection from it. Thanks largely to the organization’s work, abortion and birth control are legal, coerced sterilization is rare, sexually explicit material is readily available, and gay rights are becoming a reality. But this book does not simply applaud the creation of a sex-saturated culture and the arming of citizens with sexual rights; it shows how hard-won rights for some often impinged upon freedoms held dear by others.

Liberty and Freedom: A Visual History of America’s Founding Ideas

Liberty and Freedom: A Visual History of America’s Founding Ideas

Liberty and freedom: Americans agree that these values are fundamental to our nation, but what do they mean? How have their meanings changed through time? In this new volume of cultural history, David Hackett Fischer shows how these varying ideas form an intertwined strand that runs through the core of American life. Fischer examines liberty and freedom not as philosophical or political abstractions, but as folkways and popular beliefs deeply embedded in American culture. Tocqueville called them “habits of the heart.” From the earliest colonies, Americans have shared ideals of liberty and freedom, but with very different meanings. Like DNA these ideas have transformed and recombined in each generation. The book arose from Fischer’s discovery that the words themselves had differing origins: the Latinate “liberty” implied separation and independence. The root meaning of “freedom” (akin to “friend”) connoted attachment: the rights of belonging in a community of freepeople. The tension between the two senses has been a source of conflict and creativity throughout American history. Liberty & Freedom studies the folk history of those ideas through more than 400 visions, images, and symbols. It begins with the American Revolution, and explores the meaning of New England’s Liberty Tree, Pennsylvania’s Liberty Bells, Carolina’s Liberty Crescent, and “Don’t Tread on Me” rattlesnakes. In the new republic, the search for a common American symbol gave new meaning to Yankee Doodle, Uncle Sam, Miss Liberty, and many other icons. In the Civil War, Americans divided over liberty and freedom. Afterward, new universal visions were invented by people who had formerly been excluded from a free society–African Americans, American Indians, and immigrants. The twentieth century saw liberty and freedom tested by enemies and contested at home, yet it brought the greatest outpouring of new visions, from Franklin Roosevelt’s Four Freedoms to Martin Luther King’s “dream” to Janis Joplin’s “not

Thomas Jefferson: Life Liberty and the Pursuit of Everything

Thomas Jefferson: Life Liberty and the Pursuit of Everything

Renowned artist Maira Kalman sheds light on the fascinating life and interests of the Renaissance man who was our third president.

Thomas Jefferson is perhaps best known for writing the Declaration of Independence-but there’s so much more to discover. This energetic man was interested in everything. He played violin, spoke seven languages and was a scientist, naturalist, botanist, mathematician and architect. He designed his magnificent home, Monticello, which is full of objects he collected from around the world. Our first foodie, he grew over fifteen kinds of peas and advocated a mostly vegetarian diet. And oh yes, as our third president, he doubled the size of the United States and sent Lewis and Clark to explore it. He also started the Library of Congress and said, “I cannot live without books.” But monumental figures can have monumental flaws, and Jefferson was no exception. Although he called slavery an “abomination,” he owned about 150 slaves.

As she did in Looking at Lincoln, Maira Kalman shares a president’s remarkable, complicated life with young readers, making history come alive with her captivating text and stunning illustrations.
