‘The Crown’ Costumes to Be Spotlighted in Exhibition Next Year at Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library

While many fans of “The Crown” are still pining over lead actress Claire Foy’s decision to move on to other roles, they will be able to find remnants of her Queen Elizabeth II portrayal next year at Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library.
Her character’s wedding dress from the Netflix drama will be among the 40 ensembles spotlighted in “Costuming the Crown.” The lead actress ended her two-season run by winning the Best Actress award at this year’s Emmys. With Olivia Colman taking on Foy’s royal part, Tobias Menzies replacing Matt Smith as Prince Philip and Emerald Fennell stepping in as Camilla Parker Bowles, the third season of the Emmy and Golden Globe award-winning drama is underway.
Back in Wilmington, Del., Kim Collison, manager of exhibitions and collection planning and her team at the museum are finessing the museum’s upcoming show, which will be held in the Winterthur Galleries starting March 30. Working with Left Bank Pictures, which produces the series with Sony Pictures Television, the exhibition will feature an assortment of accoutrements — tiaras, epaulets, medals and the like — along with the period-appropriate ensembles.
Winterthur first displayed a costume from “The Crown” last fall, when the first coronation dress that was used

Sotheby’s Paris Preps Fourth Auction of Books From Pierre Bergé’s Personal Library

BERGE’S BOOKENDS: If reading is the key to enlightenment, Pierre Bergé sure had a lot of books to spark his intelligence.
Sotheby’s Paris will hold the fourth auction for a selection of books from Bergé’s personal collection on Dec. 14. Several choice lots are on view at Sotheby’s New York office through Saturday, and they illustrated the myriad interests of the late French business titan: botany, gardens, philosophy, activism and more. The upcoming auction is expected to drum up between 5 million euros and 6 million euros, according to a Sotheby’s spokeswoman.
Literature, the 19th century and music were among the areas of interest covered in prior sales, with the first auction having been held nearly three years ago.
The December sale includes such highlights as Bartholomeus Anglicus’ “Le Propriétaire des choses,” circa 1486. This complete copy of a major medieval encyclopedia is illustrated with 19 large woodcuts, all hand-colored at that time. Bidders will also find Gustave Flaubert’s “Salammbô” from 1863, a first edition that was inscribed by Flaubert to the composer Hector Berlioz.
Another reading relic is Leonhart Fuchs’ “De historia stirpium commentarii insignes” from 1542 that is considered to be the founding treatise of modern botany. The auction house will also

Trevor Noah Hails Twitter ‘King’ Trump, Plugs ‘Daily Show’ Presidential Tweet Library

If anyone doubts the awesome power of President Donald Trump’s tweets, look no further than his travel ban ― which is itself momentarily “banned” by the courts, “Daily Show” host Trevor Noah noted on Monday night.

As Noah points out, one of Trump’s tweets just helped convince the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit not to reinstate Trump’s ban on travel and immigration from six Muslim-majority countries.

The president’s Twitter timeline is so powerful, “it defeats an entire team of White House lawyers,” Noah observed. “All of them were like, ‘Law school!’ Trump was like, ‘140 characters.’”

Trump’s Twitter use also came back to haunt him when he tweeted that former FBI Director James Comey “better hope that there are no ‘tapes’” of their conversations, the “Daily Show” host remarked.

Some of Trump’s spokespeople say Trump’s tweets should be ignored ― but Noah says he has more respect for the president than that: “I take Donald Trump at his word when he tweets.”

In fact, the “Daily Show” is so impressed by the man “basically running the entire country with his thumbs” that it’s created a pop-up presidential library of Trump’s tweets, which will be on display at 3 West 57th Street in Manhattan for three days.

“Let’s just say a certain someone will be able to see it from the window of a certain tower,” Noah teased.

Babies in the Library!

Babies in the Library!

Eclectic library reading programs for young children have blossomed across the nation over the last decade, encouraging in toddlers a fondness for the library and an excitement for the caches of books to be found there. Likewise, in an effort to promote a love of language in babies as young as three months old, scores of early childhood initiatives are beginning to sprout as well. Aimed at children’s librarians and other professionals who work with very young children, this librarian-tested sourcebook provides complete programs that spotlight the value and necessity of singing, speaking, and reading to babies in their earliest months. Ten ready-to-use programs are divided for their intended audience: five for ‘pre-walkers’ and five for walkers. Marino combines rhymes involving body movement, songs, fingerplays, circle games, and books in ways that teach interaction skills with young children and help to enrich their language and enhance their listening capabilities. Several of the rhymes are repeated in a take-home section to aid librarians and others in charge of children’s programs to present parents and caregivers with the tools they need to use rhymes and activities whenever and wherever they want. A helpful bibliography lists the best picture books, programming books, rhyme collections, and numerous recordings that are suitable for very young children. The captivating activities in Babies in the Library! will delight the youngest library users while making it easy for librarians to create programs for this important and growing segment of the library population.

Typee: A Peep at Polynesian Life (The Penguin English Library)

Typee (1846; in full: Typee: A Peep at Polynesian Life) is American writer Herman Melville’s first book, partly based on his actual experiences as a “beachcomber” on Nuku Hiva (which Melville spelled as Nukuheva) in the South Pacific Marquesas Islands and the title comes from a valley there called Tai Pi Vai. It was Melville’s most popular work during his lifetime; for 19th century readers his career seemed to go downhill afterwards, but during the early 20th century it was seen as just the beginning of a career that peaked with Moby-Dick (1851). —————————————————————–** Check Out More Great Titles From Penny Books **—————————————————————–Simply click on “Penny Books (Editor)” under the title to see a full list of all of our great discounted books!!New titles are being added daily, so be sure to check back often to find more great discounted books!!

Moncler Hosts Photographer-Laden Party at New York Public Library

MONCLER’S SNAPSHOT: Sure, sure everybody’s a photographer in these iPhone-wielding days, but at Moncler’s party Thursday night that really seemed to be the case.
Fabien Baron, Hans Feurer, Lachlan Bailey, Craig McDean, Brigitte Lacombe, Mario Sorrenti, Charlotte Kidd, Terry Richardson, Olivier Zahm, Pamela Hanson, Roxanne Lowit (…you get the picture) weathered the rain to get to the New York Public Library. Some like Calvin Klein skipped the seated dinner for 200, stopping by just to check out the “Art for Love” exhibit. The Baron-curated images are also in a new book and an online auction — no small task.
Moncler chairman and chief executive officer Remo Ruffini explained, “For me, these are the 32 best photographers. I made my own list. It was easy to make the list, but very difficult to convince them.”
Guests eyeing the “Art for Love” images included Lily Kwong, Liya Kebede, Toni Garrn, Nan Bush, and Pyper and Lucky Smith.

After Being Denied 73 Years Ago, 92-Year-Old Black Woman Finally Receives Her Library Card

Ninety-two-year-old Pearl Thompson was a student at Shaw University in 1942 when she attempted to check out a book from the Olivia Raney Library in Raleigh, North Carolina. Her school, which is an HBCU, didn’t carry the book she needed for a history class so she visited the local library. According to her daughter, Deborah Thompson, Pearl was denied a library card because she was black, so instead, she was sent to the building’s basement to read the book.

“I expected to go in and get a book,” Pearl told News & Observer.

Seventy-three years later, Pearl returned to Raleigh with her daughter and granddaughter and finally got her library card.

Pearl Thompson signs the back of her library card.

“She was fighting good health but she was determined to make this trip,” Deborah told HuffPost. She said Pearl is currently battling kidney disease and suffers from heart issues — but she wouldn’t let that stop her.

The Olivia Raney Library was the city’s first public library and later became a part of the larger Wake County Public Library system. In the 1960’s, it merged with Richard B. Harrison Library — a library Deborah said Pearl helped to launch — which only served blacks at the time. The Olivia Raney Library, which is now closed, serves as a local history library and the administration at Cameron Village Library, which opened right after Olivia Raney Library closed, held a ceremony in Pearl’s honor last week.

“We all felt that the presentation of Mrs. Thompson’s library card needed to be honored with a ceremony and we also wanted the opportunity to rectify a mistake of the past,” Ann Burlingame, deputy director of Wake County Public Libraries, told The Huffington Post on Tuesday.

After college, Pearl, who has always been an advocate for education, went on to become a teacher in Raleigh for nearly fifty years.

“I was determined that when I became a teacher every child would have an opportunity to learn to read,” Pearl said at the ceremony. “A little boy [had] Down’s syndrome and they said he would never learn to read. And I taught him to read. Even to the point he wrote books himself.”

Thompson moved to Ohio with her husband after 12 years as a teacher in Raleigh, and she now lives in Cincinnati where she taught for 37 years. Decades after her days in college, she said she doesn’t hold a grudge against the library and their poor treatment.

“I don’t hold any kind of hate in my heart, because that doesn’t do it,” she said. “That doesn’t get you there.”

Arrested for Library Books

My father had a phenomenal ability to remain calm, especially having so many children in the house. Screaming and fights to the death were usually stopped easily by a quiet word from him, such as “OK guys, that’s about enough.” That was enough to stop anything going on, unlike mother who could be screaming louder and higher than dogs could hear, which did nothing. A quiet word from Daddy would. He rarely raised his voice. Except once.

2015-07-07-1436292595-9024916-bookfb.jpg

We were all at the beach except for Daddy. We were in the house down on St. Andrew’s Bay, playing, swimming, just having a fine time. I was in the house, and the phone rang.

“Hello.”

“Hello son, it’s Dad.”

I started out for a nice conversation with him and was summarily cut off.

“Please put your mother on the line… Now please,” he said in a quiet even tone.

He was much more curt than I had ever heard.

“Mama, Daddy’s on the phone”

Mama came to the phone, with a big smile on her face.

“Hello Sweetheart, how are you?

She started to listen and her smile began to fade. As she continued to listen, her smile turned into thin, pursed lips. Then they pressed together as her teeth were biting them from inside.

“Yes. About 30 minutes. Right, no problem.”

Mom got into gear. “Children, get everything, I don’t care if it’s wet, dry, throw it into bags, whatever you can find, we have to leave in 30 minutes to be back in Montgomery.”

We started asking questions and she said she would tell us later and just get going.

Once we had gotten everything in the car (it looked like we had loaded it with a pitchfork), we took off. Mother usually drove the speed limit. Not that day.

It seems that Daddy was having a nice Saturday. He loved to work in the yard, mow, tend the roses and he got to do it without all of us!

As he wheeled the mower around the edge of the yard, he noticed City of Montgomery Police cars pull up. He thought something must be wrong at the Coca-Cola Plant and they were coming to tell him. He shut off the mower, pushed the sweatband off of his forehead and walked over to the officers.

One spoke immediately. “Are you Gilbert William Hitchcock?” Daddy replied that he was. “May we please see your identification?” He happened to have his wallet in his pants and showed them his driver’s license.

“Mr. Hitchcock, you are under arrest. Anything you say may be used against you.” And they completed his Miranda Rights.

After they finished, Daddy asked them what in the world this was about.

“Mr. Hitchcock, our records show that you have 28 library books checked out in your name some of which are over five years overdue.”

Daddy thought a minute. “Library books? But I don’t even have a card.”

“The cards are in your name. Mr. Hitchcock, but it was actually your wife and children who took out the books.”

Daddy asked if he could make his one phone call and they said yes. He called the Chief of Police who happened to be one of his best friends. As Chief Swindall tried to restrain his laughter when Daddy told him the story, he asked to speak to the officers. Daddy could hear their end of the conversation.

“Well yes sir, you are right, he does look like a dangerous criminal, but I agree that this is a low charge and we can release him here on his own recognizance as per your authority. Yes Sir. Yes Sir. Thank you Sir.”

The policemen informed Daddy that he was not under arrest, but would need to appear in court on “X” date to handle this.

About three hours later, our Ford LTD Wagon pulled into the driveway. Daddy immediately presented us with a list of the books that were outstanding.

“I first want ALL of the library cards brought to me, including yours he said,” pointing to mother. “Then I want this house turned upside down until they are all found.” I noticed that he didn’t even grin.

We found the books and were spared Mother’s wrath as she herself had four books outstanding. Daddy returned the books, paid the fine, cancelled Christmas that year, went to court, and all was fine.

Three months later, two City of Montgomery cars pulled up, the officers got out of their car and rang the doorbell. “Are you Gilbert William…”

Somehow the warrant had not been expunged from the system, Daddy again called Chief Swindall, was read his rights, had to go BACK to court where they apologized for their error.

We were not allowed to even read the labels on cans for two years.

This Meow-nificent ‘Cat Library’ Helps Shelter Felines Find Forever Homes

You don’t have to be a book-lover to fall in love with this pawsitively furry library.

At the Doña Ana County Government Center in New Mexico, there is a “cat library” where employees can “check out” a feline to play with while at work.

kitties
The “cat library.”

Though the program has been around for about three years, Tiffany Tillison, one of the employees, recently posted a picture of the adorable concept to Reddit, where it quickly went viral with more than 5,500 upvotes as of Friday. And while the cat library seems like a pet lover’s dream-come-true, it also serves a greater purpose: to raise awareness about shelter animals and help get the cats adopted.

“Most animal shelters are out of the way outside of towns (usually outside the city limits), so you have to really be thinking of adopting an animal to take the trouble to go over there,” Tillison told Buzzfeed. “But with this program, hundreds of people come through our lobby every day, so they can’t miss seeing them!”

The county works with the Animal Service Center of the Mesila Valley to get the cats, and according to the shelter’s director, Dr. Beth Vesco-Mock, using the library is simple. Her shelter brings kittens to hang out in “kitty kondo” — the office’s cat play area — and employees can then take a cat back to their desks to play with and return them once they’re finished. The shelter director says that the program benefits both the cats, some of which have special needs, and the workers.

“[The kittens] run around and they get socialized,” Vesco-Mock says. “And it helps reduce stress in the office and in the cubicles.”

Many of the kittens get adopted by employees who just can’t get enough of the little furballs. When all the cats get forever homes, the shelter sends down a new crop of furry friends. About 100 felines have found new families because of the program, Vesco-Mock said.

Meow, can we paw-lease get one of those at our office?!

The Library at Night

The Library at Night

Inspired by the process of creating a library for his fifteenth-century home near the Loire, in France, Alberto Manguel, the acclaimed writer on books and reading, has taken up the subject of libraries. “Libraries,” he says, “have always seemed to me pleasantly mad places, and for as long as I can remember I’ve been seduced by their labyrinthine logic.” In this personal, deliberately unsystematic, and wide-ranging book, he offers a captivating meditation on the meaning of libraries. Manguel, a guide of irrepressible enthusiasm, conducts a unique library tour that extends from his childhood bookshelves to the “complete” libraries of the Internet, from Ancient Egypt and Greece to the Arab world, from China and Rome to Google. He ponders the doomed library of Alexandria as well as the personal libraries of Charles Dickens, Jorge Luis Borges, and others. He recounts stories of people who have struggled against tyranny to preserve freedom of thought-the Polish librarian who smuggled books to safety as the Nazis began their destruction of Jewish libraries; the Afghani bookseller who kept his store open through decades of unrest. Oral “memory libraries” kept alive by prisoners, libraries of banned books, the imaginary library of Count Dracula, the library of books never written-Manguel illuminates the mysteries of libraries as no other writer could. With scores of wonderful images throughout, The Library at Night is a fascinating voyage through Manguel’s mind, memory, and vast knowledge of books and civilizations.

Booked for the Evening Gala: Newark Public Library

2014-12-06-BOOKEDFORTHEEVENINGOCT2014.jpg

During a brisk October evening this past fall in downtown Newark, NJ, guests came out to attend a fundraising benefit for The Newark Public Library entitled “Booked For The Evening” and to celebrate The Library’s 125th Anniversary as one of the city’s premiere educational and cultural public institutions.

The Newark Public Library has served as an historical landmark anchored in the heart of the community for over 100 years, providing patrons and citizens with free resources and information to serve their needs, ideas, dreams and hopes.

Over many decades, the Library has welcomed residents from across the country and the world, serving as a global catalyst to help residents cultivate successful personal and professional lives. Currently, the City of Newark is embarking upon a new millennium resurgence of renewal and growth. With a newly elected mayor in office, The Honorable Ras J. Baraka, the city is undergoing rapid and innovative development. The Library is responding in kind to these progressive advancements. “In this environment, we are conscious of the changing needs of our patrons and we continually strive to grow and evolve to meet those needs…” says Wilma Grey, Director, Newark Public Library.

At the Booked for the Evening gala, the Library honored Newark native, Mikki Taylor, for her outstanding professional achievements. Ms. Taylor currently serves as the Editor-At-Large for Essence Magazine and is also an accomplished businesswoman, author and television personality. She is a highly sought after speaker who offers a message of empowerment that encourages women to own their lives, walk in their God-given gifts and honor their purpose. Born and raised in Newark, Ms. Taylor “is proud of this great city where her dreams were nurtured and her purpose began. She is proud to be celebrated by the Newark Public Library where she spent many of her childhood years preparing for her future.”

The evening’s special guest keynote speaker was Arianna Huffington, who is known internationally as the chair, president and editor-in-chief of the online news magazine, The Huffington Post, as well as for her extraordinary success in the field of politics and media. In addition to honoring Ms. Taylor, Arianna discussed her book Thrive, the third metric of redefined success and the need to live a well-balanced life which includes meditating and getting enough rest to prevent burnout so you can live and perform at an optimal level. Guests were gifted with signed copies of the book.

In closing out the evening, Newark Public Library Board of Trustees member Timothy J. Crist noted that the generous supporters of the event “give new energy and hope for the work that lies ahead…in continuing the Library’s mission of expanding horizons and changing lives.”

Walkabout: David Garrick and Unexpected Harmony in the Library

2014-10-20-DG.jpg

I don’t get around much anymore; not like I used to. Age, children and, yes, a diminishing cityscape are all factors. With once-ample opportunities for aesthetic nourishment in steep decline around town (in direct proportion, seemingly, to the ever-encroaching ascendance of sky-high co-op sales), I tend to stick close to home.

This past Saturday, however, I was reminded of what I’ve been missing. My brother Mark, bless him, invited me to a staged reading he was participating in of Catherine and Petruchio, a rarely (like, never) performed 18th Century adaptation of Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew by the dimly remembered titan of that distant age in British theater, actor-manager-playwright David Garrick (that’s him up there gamboling with “The Muses”). Presented by an entity that calls itself “New York’s Piney Fork Press Theatre,” the reading took place at a New York Public Library branch I’d also never heard of: the George Bruce branch on West 125th Street.
2014-10-20-GBB3.JPG
It was a nice autumn day. I took my kids, Lea and Sara, ages eleven and nine. Our first pleasant surprise was the library building itself, a gorgeous red brick and sandstone edifice designed in 1915 by Carrere and Hastings, I later learned – storied architects of the Main Branch on 42nd and Fifth. Down a flight of stairs, the girls and I found ourselves in the most charming little jewel box of an auditorium (our library system, I long ago discovered, has many) with a vaulted mini-proscenium painted a delicious cherry red.

Things only got better. Johnny Culver, the afternoon’s impresario, introduced an opening act: “The Firth Sisters.” Two unassuming young ladies slipped onstage bearing a guitar and a ukulele, respectively, and proceeded to sing three cunningly disparate songs — “All of Me,” by John Legend; Elvis’s “Love Me Tender;” and “On the Street Where You Live,” from My Fair Lady — in exquisite gusts of intricate, effortless harmony; as organic as it was ethereal. The alchemy of setting, sound and sweet, offhand virtuosity was intoxicating. I mean, they were good! I’m hoping to learn more about The Firth Sisters; I literally had to halt them slipping out the door on the heels of their offstage exit to ask for a business card. Both seemed shocked by my request.

Next up: the main event. I don’t believe I’ve ever attended a performance of anything actually written by David Garrick. The play proved a dead ringer for The Taming of the Shrew but shorter — which was clearly Garrick’s goal; apparently Catherine and Petruchio was so successful in its day that it supplanted Shakespeare’s original for almost a century in England and for even longer in the U.S. I did find myself wishing at times that someone onstage would break into a song from Cole Porter’s Kiss Me Kate — and then Mark suddenly did, tossing out a measure or two from “I’ve Come to Wive It Wealthily in Padua.”

I thought Mark was great. Who knew he could handle iambic Shakespeare-ish pentameter with such élan? His commanding Petruchio was downright scary, in a good way. Mark’s colleagues were a delightful complement. I’m going to name them all because I can, and they deserve it: Kyle Minishew, Rob Lanchester, Yvette Bedsgood, Terri Matassov, Lauren Wiley, Lex Larson and Gary Martins. The director was Deloss Brown.

The library supplied an extra front row of cushy leather beanbag chairs that my daughters doted on. Not nearly enough of the remaining seats were filled. (Sigh.) Maybe next time.

‘True Blood’ Turns Ted Cruz Fundraiser At George W. Bush Library Into A Bloodbath (SPOILER ALERT)

True Blood” fans know to expect plenty of bloodshed, often in unique circumstances. But on Sunday night’s episode, the show stepped it up a notch.

SPOILER ALERT: STOP READING IF YOU HAVE NOT WATCHED THIS EPISODE.

Vampires Eric and his progeny Pam attended a Ted Cruz fundraiser supposedly held at the George W. Bush Presidential Library in Dallas to search for the parents of their enemy, Sarah Newlin.

Trying to blend in, Eric dons a Western-style suit with a bolo instead of a necktie while Pam puts on a purple dress worthy of a gala on either side of the aisle.

But when she catches a glimpse of herself in a mirror, Pam utters a line that would light up Twitter:

Even some on the right admitted they got a kick out of the scene:

When Sarah shows up with the yakuza in hot pursuit, a bloody massacre ensues.

“True Blood” is in its final season so you can expect even more bloodshed before the Aug. 24 series finale.

The Library Book Cart Precision Drill Team Manual

Public stunts and all-for-fun, utterly nonpoliticized publicity bashes can be a great way to promote a library to a community, get people to see the library in a different light and become interested and involved, and finally reach those who think that libraries are boring or stuffy places. This light-hearted but precise manual provides step-by-step instructions on how to plan, equip and train a successful book cart drill team. It includes tips for recruiting members and making the experience gratifying, finding festive opportunities to perform, costuming, decorating the carts–and especially, clear choreographic drawings for imaginative, attention-getting routines. And by the way: grocery stores, retailers, rental outfits and others could easily adapt the ideas in this book. It doesn''t have to be library book carts, it can be grocery carts, baby strollers, and lawn mowers–anything you can push down the street.
