New Mom Brigitte Nielsen Turns 55 and Couldn’t Be Happier: It’s the ‘Best Time in My Life’

Life is fabulous at 55 for Brigitte Nielsen.

The Danish-Italian actress celebrates her birthday on Sunday, less than a month after welcoming her fifth child (and first daughter!), Frida.

“Celebrating my birthday has never been more exciting,” she exclusively tells PEOPLE of the special occasion. “It’s the best time in my life, with my adorable little Frida, my wonderful husband and four beautiful grown-up sons.”

She adds, “Life is amazing, you only get one, so take good care of it, and live it to the fullest.”

Nielsen and her husband, Italian model Mattia Dessi, previously gave PEOPLE an exclusive look at the little raven-haired beauty, who arrived safely in a Los Angeles hospital on June 22, weighing 5 lbs., 9 oz, and measuring 19 inches long.

“We are overjoyed to welcome our beautiful daughter into our lives,” she told PEOPLE. “It’s been a long road, and so worth it. We’ve never been more in love.”

Nielsen made headlines when she revealed on Instagram on May 30 that — at age 54 — she was pregnant with her fifth child. The star of Red Sonja and Beverly Hills Cop II — who has been married five times — previously had all boys: Raoul Meyer Jr., 23, Douglas Meyer, 25, Killian Gastineau, 28, and Julian Winding, 34.

Nielsen, who was married to actor Sylvester Stallone from 1985-87, wed Dessi in July 2006. Daughter Frida is their first child together.

Last week, Nielsen celebrated the couple’s wedding anniversary with a silly shot of the duo eating ice cream.

“12yr marriage today and we still have love&fun with just being together❤#love #together,” she said.

The star previously opened up about wanting to have more kids in August 2008.

“The children have kept me going. After I do Playboy, we want to try IVF. It’s asking a lot, but if it’s possible, it would make our package complete,” Nielsen told Hello! magazine.

Why Evangeline Lilly Changed Her Life After Lost — And Moved to Hawaii!

Evangeline Lilly went through a major shift after wrapping up on the TV show that made her famous: J.J. Abrams’ Lost.

Despite the series’ incredible success, the British Columbia native, 38, struggled with becoming a household name.

“I was never enamored by the idea of fame,” she tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue, admitting she went through “a pretty dark time” coming to terms with being a public figure.

For more about Lilly, check out this week’s issue of PEOPLE, on newsstands now.

In fact, she planned on retiring from acting after Lost ended in 2010, and for two years enjoyed life off the grid, moving to Hawaii with her partner, Norman Kali, who worked in film production and is now a stay-at-home dad.

She took up surfing and wrote scripts and children’s books. Lilly also settled into the role of mom, having two sons.

But when Peter Jackson offered her a role in The Hobbit movies, she couldn’t turn it down.

Same with 2015’s Ant-Man, in which she stars opposite Paul Rudd’s titular superhero as Hope Pym, a scientist who goes on to become a crime fighter in the movie’s sequel, Ant-Man and the Wasp.

Lilly says she had to find a way to “make peace” with working in Hollywood and “embrace all the things that made me uncomfortable.” She did—and she has her low-key island home life to keep her grounded.

“I had to find a place in which I could be happy,” she says. “And now I very much am.”

Ant-Man and the Wasp is out Friday.

Saloni Lodha, Eugenie Niarchos Bring Obsessions to Life With New RTW Collaboration

TEAMWORK: Designer Saloni Lodha and fine jeweler Eugenie Niarchos have brought their mutual obsessions — traveling, bright colors, embellishments — to life via a new ready-to-wear capsule collection that will drop in September.
After continuously sharing ideas and meeting in different places across the globe, the longtime friends finally decided to create something together. “We would travel to Bombay and to Hong Kong, pick up references from each place and talk about all the different dresses we wanted to design and where each style would work,” said Lodha, whose label, Saloni is best known for its vibrant, printed dresses.
“I think I can get into Eugenie’s head and we love all the same things,” the designer added during the launch lunch at Dartmouth House in London’s Mayfair.
The capsule channels the same fantasy-filled aesthetic that Niarchos’ jewelry is known for: There are tiger prints that pay homage to her spirit animal, sequin dresses and midi skirts reflecting her love of mermaids and intricately embroidered pieces that reflect on both designers’ fascination with India.

Mom of Pregnant Gunshot Victim Who Stayed on Life Support for Weeks to Deliver Baby Says, ‘She Held on For Him’

The mother of a slain pregnant woman who stayed on life support for weeks after being shot so she could have her baby considers the child as a “blessing” even as she mourns her daughter’s loss.

Ohio mom Lindzie Wilson, 25, was shot on March 1 but stayed on life support through April 21, when doctors delivered her baby boy, Bailee. Lindzie, a mom of two other young boys, was subsequently taken off life support and died on April 24, authorities have said.

The fatal shooting, which took place outside of Lindzie’s Springfield home, is still unsolved.

Her mom, LeighAnne Roberts, tells PEOPLE she’s proud her daughter “fought hard for Bailee. She held on for him. She held on as long as she possibly could.”

Bailee was born at 24 weeks and is currently in an incubator in the neonatal intensive care unit, Roberts says, but his long-term prognosis is good: “He’s doing as good as he can” be, says Roberts, who will raise the child.

Roberts is looking forward to Aug. 15 — Lindzie’s due date — when Bailee is taken out of the incubator and she can hold him.

“He’s definitely a blessing,” she says. “I’m sure up there watching this and is happy about how things went.”

Roberts says that doctors described Bailee’s survival as a “miracle”: One of the bullets that struck Lindzie went through her shoulder and traveled diagonally to her opposite hip, narrowly avoiding her unborn child.

• Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Click here to get breaking crime news, ongoing trial coverage and details of intriguing unsolved cases in the True Crime Newsletter.

“I would have loved for the miracle for to survive it,” she says. “But there was no hope from day one.”

The choice to take Lindzie of life support, she says, was really no choice at all: It had been 54 days and Lindzie’s condition hadn’t improved.

Still, she says the decision to part with her only daughter brought her “indescribable pain. That’s all I can really say.”

Lindzie was an outgoing, generous person who had been accepted into the Naval Academy before her first pregnancy, her mom says. She loved country music and outdoor activities like dirt biking.

Most of all, she loved her children: She was a “hands-on” mom to her two sons Brendan, 8, and Bentley, 5, who are now being cared for by their father.

“She loved her kids deeply,” Roberts says, adding, “Her smile made you smile.”

Lindzie, says Roberts, had “the most gorgeous blue eyes” as well as blond hair — the latter a trait she shares with little Bailee.

The pain of her death is compounded by the fact that it’s still unsolved, says Roberts.

Police have not named a suspect in the attack, and in a recent press conference, Springfield Police Chief Lee Graf called on the public’s help in the investigation.

Graf declined to say whether police think Wilson knew her attacker.

The thought that Lindzie’s attacker is still at large is “very discouraging,” says Roberts.

Referencing Lindzie’s sons, Roberts says, “I want justice for them. All three of them have to grow up without their mom.”

Anyone with information on the shooting should call 937-324-7685 or 937-324-7716, police have said.

British Toddler at Center of Legal Battle Dies After Being Taken Off Life Support: ‘Heartbroken’

Alfie Evans, the 23-month-old terminally ill British boy at the center of a headline-making legal battle, has died just five days after he was taken off life support, his parents announced.

“Our baby boy grew his wings tonight at 2:30 am,” wrote his mother Kate James, 20, on Facebook early Saturday. “We are heartbroken. Thank you everyone for all your support 💙

His father, 21-year-old Thomas Evans, also wrote on Facebook, “My gladiator lay down his shield and gained his wings at 02:30 😥😢😥😢😥 absolutely heartbroken💔😭 I LOVE YOU MY GUY💙💙💙👨‍👦👨‍👦.”

Alfie initially survived in the days after medical staff at Liverpool’s Alder Hey Children’s Hospital cut off his life assistance, Evans said. Alfie continued to live despite being in a “semi-vegetative state” as a result of a mystery degenerative neurological condition, surprising doctors who said further attempts to treat the boy would be futile, according to the BBC. Alfie initially survived on his own for six hours on Monday before doctors provided the child with oxygen and hydration.

“We wish to express our heartfelt sympathy and condolences to Alfie’s family at this extremely distressing time,” Alder Hey Children’s Hospital said in a statement. “All of us feel deeply for Alfie, Kate, Tom and his whole family and our thoughts are with them. This has been a devastating journey for them and we would ask that their privacy and the privacy of staff at Alder Hey is respected.”

RELATED: What to Know About Alfie Evans, the British Toddler Taken Off Life Support After Legal Battle

The hospital also announced a makeshift memorial for the boy.

“We feel sure people will wish to place tributes to Alfie along with messages of support for Kate and Tom,” Alder Hey Hospital said. “To ensure there is sufficient space for these and to ensure the safety of all those who wish to visit, we have secured a suitable place in Springfield Park situated next to Alder Hey Hospital. This is on the advice of Merseyside Police.”

Evans and James have been in a lengthy battle to keep the ailing toddler on life support. Alfie has been at the hospital since December 2016.

However, a series of court rulings sided with doctors who said there was no hope for the boy, according to the Washington Post. The BBC reported that doctors argued that keeping Alfie on a ventilator would be “futile,” “unkind and inhumane.” Most recently, the European Court of Human Rights rejected the parents’ request to keep doctors at the Liverpool hospital from taking Alfie off of the assistance.

“I faught (sic) hard in court for my son because I know what’s right!!” the grieving father wrote in a Facebook post after the court’s decision. “And look where we are now my son is still ALIVE AFTER OVER 10 horrendous scary heartbreaking hours.”

The human rights court’s decision upheld that of Britain’s Supreme Court, in which justices said it would be pointless to take Alfie to Rome for treatment.

Still, the head of the Vatican’s Bambino Gesu Pediatric Hospital said the Italian defense ministry had a plane ready and waiting to take Alfie to Italy for treatment if the additional Tuesday hearing grants the family’s appeal, according to the Associated Press.

On Monday, Pope Francis even voiced his support for Alfie.

RELATED: Charlie Gard, Terminally Ill British Baby at Center of Legal Battle, Dies: ‘Our Beautiful Little Boy Has Gone’

“Moved by the prayers and immense solidarity shown little Alfie Evans, I renew my appeal that the suffering of his parents may be heard and that their desire to seek new forms of treatment may be granted,” the Pope tweeted.

RELATED VIDEO: Charlie Gard, Terminally Ill British Baby at Center of Legal Battle, Dies

In a fundraiser for Alfie, the family wrote that he was born “healthy and on time” in May 2016. However, the parents soon noticed Alfie was not accomplishing common milestones like lifting his head, maintaining eye contact and eating with his hands, according to the Just Giving fundraising page. Doctors initially believed the boy was simply a “late developer,” but became concerned when he began experiencing spasms and developed an infection.

The situation is similar to that of another London couple, Chris Gard and Connie Yates, whose son, Charlie, died in July after a lengthy court battle to treat the terminally ill 11-month-old baby. Earlier this year, Takesha Thomas and Lanre Haastrup lost their son, Isaiah, after a judge ruled that doctors could stop providing intensive care treatment to the boy who suffered brain damage.

Justin Theroux Is ‘Doing His Thing’ Since Jennifer Aniston Split: Inside His Single Life

Justin Theroux is settling into his life as a newly single man.

The actor, 46, has been sticking to his normal routine since announcing his split from Jennifer Aniston last month.

“He’s just doing his thing,” a source tells PEOPLE. “He eats at the same time, goes to the same places, hangs with the same people.”

Since the split, the actor has been spending most of his time in New York City, where he is surrounded by a close-knit group of friends including restauranteur Carlos Quirarte and Amy Sedaris.

According to E! News, Theroux recently hosted a small dinner party in N.Y.C. for Quirarte. The restaurant owner is known for his NYC-based host-spot The Smile, which Theroux frequently visits.

Earlier this month, Theroux was spotted on a solo outing, attending a Paris fashion week show.

The actor has also recently signed on to star in Justine Bateman’s upcoming directorial debut Violet. Theroux will play a mischevious voice inside the head of a film executive.

Splash News

Meanwhile, Aniston has been “staying busy” since the split, a source previously told PEOPLE.

The actress, 49, headed out for Molly McNearney‘s 40th birthday party on March 11, where she posed with her pals — including the birthday girl, Tobey Maguire‘s estranged wife Jen Meyer, Jason Bateman‘s wife Amanda Aanka and her manager Aleen Keshishian — in a photo booth.

On Feb. 15, Aniston, 49, and Theroux announced that they had split after two and a half years of marriage — and seven years as a couple.

“In an effort to reduce any further speculation, we have decided to announce our separation,” the former couple said in a joint statement. “This decision was mutual and lovingly made at the end of last year. We are two best friends who have decided to part ways as a couple, but look forward to continuing our cherished friendship.”

As reported by PEOPLE, the pair’s different lifestyles — and long separations — played a role in the couple’s decision to end their marriage.

“During his relationship with Jen, Justin’s life in N.Y.C. was always very different from his L.A. life,” an Aniston source previously told PEOPLE.

Inside Bachelor in Paradise’s Tanner and Jade Roper Tolbert’s Life as New Parents

Jade Roper Tolbert and husband Tanner Tolbert are taking new parenthood in stride.

The reality stars, who fell in love on season 2 of Bachelor in Paradise, welcomed their daughter Emerson “Emmy” Avery in August and now reveal to PEOPLE the ways their lives — and marriage — have shifted.

“It changes your priorities in life and makes you think of things a little differently,” says Tolbert, 30. “Watching Jade be a mom has been pretty awesome.”

Adds Roper Tolbert, 31, “I love being a mom. We’ve been enjoying just being new parents and every new thing is so exciting for us. She’s a little treasure.”

Of their 6-month-old’s most recent milestones, the couple says she has started eating solid foods, rolling over, making consonant sounds and teething. They also took her traveling for the first time in January on a trip to St. Lucia.

“It was awesome, but in hindsight, we probably should’ve brought my mom or someone to babysit so we could have a little bit of alone time because that was tough,” Tolbert says.

Finding alone time to spend together in general is tough for the two these days, but Tolbert says that luckily his mom moved back to Kansas City, Missouri, and has become their “resident babysitter.”

“If we do date nights, it’s something easy like a movie where we’re gone for a couple hours and then we always just end up talking about her anyway,” Roper Tolbert says as her husband adds, “The first date we went on, we went to a movie and Jade started crying.”

“That was when she was really little,” Roper Tolbert explains. “She was maybe 4 weeks old and the hormones, they get you. Now it’s nice.”

For more coverage, follow our babies magazine on Flipboard.

Roper Tolbert’s next trip will include a visit to see her fellow Bachelor in Paradise alum and best friend Carly Waddell at the end of March so she and Emerson can meet Waddell and husband Evan Bass‘ new baby girl, Isabella Evelyn, whom they welcomed on Feb. 15.

“We’ll get to meet her baby and see if they’re little besties,” she says. “It has been fun being able to relate to her because not a lot of my friends have babies yet.”

As to how Roper Tolbert thinks Waddell will be as a mom, she says, “I know she’ll do great,” adding, “Even what I’ve seen so far, you can already tell she has taken on motherhood so gracefully.”

RELATED: Bachelor in Paradise Alums Carly Waddell and Evan Bass Welcome Daughter Isabella Evelyn

Like Waddell and Bass, the Tolberts tied the knot in a televised ceremony in Mexico in February 2016. One day, they plan on sharing the story of how they met with Emerson.

“She’s the first Paradise baby,” Roper Tolbert says. “She has her own little Instagram account and so a lot of it has to do with that. I feel like someday she’s going to want to know, ‘Why are all of these people following me?’ We’ll have to eventually share the story.”

Whether they would let her go on one of The Bachelor franchises like her parents, Tolbert says, “I don’t know if the show will be around that long but if she wanted to, who are we to say no? It’d be pretty hypocritical of us if we told her no.”

“I would like to say, ‘No, I wouldn’t let her go on the show,’ ” Roper Tolbert says. “But also, if that was something she was really interested in doing, then I would support her.”

RELATED: Bachelor in Paradise’s Jade Roper Tolbert Details the Night of Her 7-Hour Labor: “I Kept Telling Myself I Can Do This”

Despite their busy new lives as parents, Tolbert is working on getting rid of his “dad bod” with Nutrisystem For Men.

“I didn’t even realize that I had gained some weight during her pregnancy because I never used a scale or anything like that,” he says. “I wear a lot of sweatpants. I started Nutrisystem and lost 16 pounds in six weeks. I’m back to my normal weight and feeling a lot better.”

Plus, their life might get even busier soon, as they both want additional kids. “We’re definitely going to at least try to have some more,” Tolbert says. “We’re debating between three and four right now.”

Roper Tolbert agrees. “He wants that boy so if the next one’s a boy, then we’re probably going to have three.”

Christopher Bailey Reflects on Legacy – and Life After Burberry

Winding down his 17-year tenure at Burberry with a colorful collection that had a streetwise edge, Christopher Bailey was in a “chipper” yet reflective mood before his show.
In a wide-ranging chat, he spoke about his achievements, a few regrets, his future in fashion, and his role in Burberry’s creative transition:
WWD: How did it feel to design your last collection?
Christopher Bailey: It felt poignant. I had a lot of reflection, but I’m so serene with the decision and it just feels right. I feel extraordinarily privileged that I’ve been able to be somewhere that I have loved so deeply for 17 years. I just feel very calm and chipper about it.
WWD: You are under contract until the end of the year. How long will you stay?
C.B.: My last real working day is March 31, when I step down from my role and then I’m in advisory capacity to the board all the way through to December — as and when they need me. It’s clearly formal and contractual, but it’s not like I need to go there every day.

Jennifer Aniston Turns 49! Inside Her Married Life with Justin Theroux

Jennifer Aniston sure does have a lot of reasons to celebrate.

The actress rings in her 49th birthday on Sunday, just days ahead of celebrating Valentine’s Day with husband Justin Theroux.

The occasion marks another busy year for the couple — Aniston recently signed on with Reese Witherspoon for a new Apple TV series, while Theroux filmed the comedy The Spy Who Dumped Me in Budapest.

“They have figured out a life that works for them,” a source previously told PEOPLE of the couple that married in 2015. “Jennifer’s life with Justin is great.”

A second source said the distance helps them appreciate the time they do have together even more.

“This has not hurt their marriage at all, it seems to help,” an entertainment source previously told PEOPLE. “They love and respect each other and do spend a lot of time apart. For them, it is a healthy part of their romance.”

Added the first source: “By not spending every minute together, it’s like their honeymoon is lasting longer.”

But when they aren’t working, Aniston and Theroux, 46, enjoy a quiet life at the Los Angeles home, which they designed together.

“There was a time when I thought there was something romantic about picking up and trotting off somewhere different every three months. Now I’m becoming more particular about the projects I take,” Aniston told Architectural Digest. “I look around at my husband and my dogs and our home, and there’s nowhere else I want to be.”

Who Was Morgan Freeman Calling Out During His SAG Life Achievement Award Speech?

There was one question on everybody’s minds after Morgan Freeman gave his life achievement award speech at the 2018 Screen Actors Awards: Who was the mystery celebrity that the 80-year-old actor called out during his speech?

As Freeman began his acceptance speech on Sunday, he paused for a moment to abruptly call out another member of the audience. And while the actor didn’t elaborate on who he was talking about at the time, backstage he let reporters in on a little secret — it was Lily Tomlin!

“Yeah. That was Lily Tomlin,” he explained at the 2018 SAG Awards press room at The Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on Sunday. “She’s a wonder in herself and I’ve always loved her. I see her, I say hello.”

Tomlin was also the recipient of the SAG life achievement award at least year’s ceremony.

Be sure to check out PEOPLE’s full SAG Awards coverage to get the latest news on Hollywood’s big night.

Shortly after walking onstage to begin his speech earlier that night, Freeman stopped and said, “Hey…I’m talking to you. Yeah, hey,” to a then-unidentified person in the audience.

“Okay, well you just stand out to me, that’s all,” he added, before resuming his speech.

RELATEDMorgan Freeman & Rita Moreno Playfully Rib Each Other as He Accepts SAG Life Achievement Award

Freeman received the life achievement award at the ceremony this year for his work in film, in addition to his humanitarian accomplishments. His Electric Company costar Rita Moreno, who is an EGOT winner, presented him the honor, which Freeman presented to her back in 2013.

“Morgan is more than just an actor, producer humanitarian — this man is a national treasure,” Moreno, 86, said before the video montage dedicated to Freeman’s career.

Before taking the stage, Freeman was greeted with a standing ovation from the audience — and the cheers intensified, even more, when he headed to accept the honor.

“Morgan, lift up your hat,” instructed Moreno, who wanted to make sure the audience was able to see his face.

“You have no idea how long I’ve had to put with that,” Freeman joked before starting his speech.

“This is beyond an honor. This is a place in history,” he said, before adding, “Oh, and one more thing, I wasn’t going to do this. I’m going to tell you what’s wrong with this statue, it works from the back, from the front it’s gender specific. Maybe I started something.”

After winning a statewide drama competition in Mississippi at age 12, Freeman went on to perform in small parts before serving in the U.S. Air Force, eventually graduating to film and television roles in his subsequent career in Hollywood, which has resulted in over $ 4.5 billion in cumulative worldwide ticket sales.

In addition to his work on screens big and small — namely in movies like Unforgiven, Million Dollar Baby, The Shawshank Redemption, Driving Miss Daisy, and Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy — Freeman has embarked on several philanthropic ventures. In 1973, he co-founded the Frank Silvera Writers’ Workshop in support of black playwrights, and he continues to contribute to Artists for a New South Africa and the Campaign for Female Education.

The prestigious award has been given to esteemed members of the industry elite in the recent past, including Ernest Borgnine in 2010, Mary Tyler Moore in 2011, Dick Van Dyke in 2012, Moreno in 2013, Debbie Reynolds in 2014, and Carol Burnett in 2015. Lily Tomlin received the honor at last year’s ceremony.

The 24th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards was broadcast live from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on both TNT and TBS.

Selena Gomez Visits Childhood Home and Wonders If It ‘Could Have Been Better Than My Life Today’

Selena Gomez spent part of the weekend reflecting on her past — and taking a literal trip down memory lane.

The 25-year-old singer shared a photo of herself perched on the doorstep of the Texas home where she spent her youth, on Saturday, writing on Instagram, “The home I grew up in, from birth to 13… (no one was home when I knocked this time lol).”

“I visit this place every chance I get,” Gomez said. “In many ways it very well could have been better than my life today, but I’m grateful for a voice that can enable change today. Even when I don’t know how to do it well or actually want it. I love you Grand Prairie. Thank you.”

RELATED: Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez Kick Off the New Year with a Sweaty Pilates Session

There have recently been strains between Gomez and her mom Mandy Teefey, noticed by fans after the duo unfollowed each other on Instagram. But their recent estrangement wasn’t sparked solely by pop star’s newly rekindled relationship with Justin Bieber.

“It’s more complicated than just fighting over a guy,” a source close to the family previously told PEOPLE. “Mandy and Selena have had their ups and down before. This isn’t the first time.”

Though the mother and daughter weren’t on speaking terms toward the end of last year, Gomez “also wants to give her mom some space,” added the insider. “When they fight, they fight hard. But when they love, they also love hard.”

RELATED VIDEO: Selena Gomez Isn’t Currently Speaking to Mom Mandy Teefey and Wants to ‘Give Her Space’: Source

Multiple sources previously told PEOPLE Gomez’s family was concerned about the on-again romance and that Bieber was determined to show her loved ones he had matured.

An insider also confirmed that Teefey, 41, had voluntarily sought treatment at a hospital in Los Angeles in December but dismissed a report that it was because of an argument with her daughter over Bieber. “It’s been a stressful time for Mandy and she made the decision herself to go to the hospital and make sure everything was okay,” said the source.

After ringing in the new year together in Mexico, Bieber and Gomez headed to a private gym session in Los Angeles on Wednesday.

A source previously told PEOPLE that they welcomed 2018 in Cabo with friends, adding that the pair are “doing great.”

Firefighter Adopts Baby Girl He Delivered on the Job After Saving Her Life: ‘Grace Is Our Miracle’

Firefighter Marc Hadden had saved dozens of life with the department in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, but on Nov. 14, 2011, he found himself delivering a baby for the very first time after a woman called 911 complaining of abdominal pain.

“She struggled from the minute she was put in my hands,” recalls Marc, 48, who just seconds after her birth, administered emergency oxygen to help get the 6-lb. 2-oz. infant breathing on her own. “It was amazing to hear her cry.”

At the time, Hadden never imagined that just 48 hours later he would bringing the baby girl — whom they named Rebecca Grace — home as her father.

‘Winning The Lottery’

Marc and his wife, Beth, who already had two young boys (Will, now 15 and Parker, now 13) had always wanted a third child but because of complications with their first two pregnancies — they were forced to take the long and expensive route of adoption.

So just hours later at the hospital, when the birth mother made it clear she couldn’t care for her daughter, Marc was the first to raise his hand to take her in as his own.

Beth says she remembers getting a phone call from Marc that day where he told her “I delivered a baby.”

Jokingly she replied, “Can we keep her?”

Well, he responded, “I think she might be going up for adoption.”

When Beth heard that the birth mother was a single mom already struggling to raise a teenage son, she felt compelled to go visit her the next day at the hospital.

“My heart just went out to this woman,” says Beth, 39, who works as an instructional coach at the local elementary school. “I brought her a little prayer book and asked I could get anything for her.”

As the two women talked, a doctor walked in to let the mother know that they were ready to move forward with the adoption. It was then that she said to Beth, ‘I can’t give my baby to someone I’ve never met.’

• For more on first responder Marc Hadden becoming a day to the baby he saved on the job, subscribe to PEOPLE or pick up this week’s issue, on newsstands Friday.

“Suddenly the opportunity was there for me to say that Marc and I had been praying about adoption for years,” she recalls. “And she looked over at me and said, ‘I want you to adopt my baby.’ She had the nurse bring her in and I was able to hold Gracie for the first time. I called Marc and said, ‘I think we just had a baby.’”

By the end of that day, the couple had signed temporary-custody papers, and just 48 hours after her birth, they brought her home.

“She is what we prayed for,” says Beth. “It felt like winning the lottery.”

Life Today

While Gracie has been a part of the family ever since the day she was brought home six years ago, her parents have always made sure she that remembers where she came from.

“We told her pretty much from day one,” says Marc. “I’ve taken her to the back of the ambulance where she was born, so she knows — no doubt about it.”

She even tells people how “my daddy delivered me in the back of an ambulance helped me take my first breath.

Always wearing bows, tutus and practicing gymnastics, Beth says she’s still a “tough little joker because she has two big brothers who have trained her right.”

Every day Marc and Beth pinch themselves over how lucky they are to have Gracie in their lives.

“I’ve always wanted a daughter, and this is just amazing,” says Marc.

Adds Beth: “Sometimes the best things in life happen in the blink of an eye — and you can’t let them pass you by.”

“He’s my guy,” she said.

Menzel, 46, and Lohr, 41, tied the knot in September in an intimate backyard ceremony.

And while the actress said she’s loves being able to call Lohr her “husband,” the word family has also taken on a new meaning since their special day.

“Family, to me, means being able to be yourself, sit back on the couch and relax, and watch a movie with the people that know you better than anyone else in the world,” she said.

Menzel, who attended the premiere solo, said Lohr has developed a close bond with her eight-year-old son Walker.

“They’re very close,” she said. “They’re probably watching a film, or they run around play dodgeball with a sock, they make a ball out of socks and they hit each other.”

And to do this, Atkin tapped eight women, a baby and a dog (Chrissy Teigen’s French bulldog Pippa) to depict what it means to be a woman for “Live Life Your Ouai.” The series of images shot by husband Mike Rosenthal. Today, the campaign kicks off across Ouai’s social platforms, with new content rolling out through Oct. 30. “It felt like everything was external and the narrative was about being pretty. I get it — we’re in the beauty aisle. But part of me felt just wanted to put a twist on that…and when I sat down and thought about what it means to be a woman, [I realized] there is so much more of the story to tell,” Atkin said.

Idris Elba Talks Sexy Secret Life as a Pro Kick-Boxer

Onscreen or in the ring, Idris Elba always kicks butt.

The British actor, 44, made his debut as a pro kick-boxer in October and pulled out a win, leading to what his The Dark Tower costar Matthew McConaughey refers to as Elba’s “undefeated K1 career.”

“One fight. Who’s counting?” Elba tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue. “I just wasn’t beaten.”

Elba trained for the October 28 match while shooting the Stephen King adaptation, in which he plays justice defender Gunslinger.

“I trained twice a day,” he says. “I was quickly becoming in incredible shape to endure some of the stuff we did. To be honest, the action sequences were what they were and done in pockets, but I was in good physical and mental shape.”

A post shared by 7dub (@7dub) on Aug 22, 2016 at 1:22am PDT

The father of two had a special guest at his initial face-off in London—Madonna.

“Idris Elba Smashes it at York Hall!” the pop star, 58, wrote on Instagram at the time.

A post shared by Madonna (@madonna) on Oct 28, 2016 at 5:58pm PDT

Elba recently accomplished another first: directing a movie, Yardie, based on Victor Headley’s 1993 novel by the same name. His experience working on the crime film even inspired McConaughey to think about getting behind the camera.

“Idris talked about his love of the experience of it,” McConaughey, 47, tells PEOPLE. “I’ve got a couple of original scripts I’m working on that I would be the only one who could direct them. When I do that, it’s gotta be something that I gotta feel, for every single frame. That would make it really hard, but really fun.”

And Elba offered nothing but support.

“You’d be good at it,” he tells McConaughey. “I think you’d be so passionate and thorough.”

Inside Serial Killer Son of Sam’s Life Now: How He’s Been Born-Again as ‘Son of Hope’ and Doesn’t Want to Leave Prison

In the years since his arrest ended a reign of terror over New York City that peaked in the summer of 1977, David Berkowitz — the serial killer known as the “Son of Sam” — has rechristened himself the “Son of Hope,” claiming he’s a born-again Christian who wants to remain behind bars, according to his visitors in prison.

The redemptive identity is an attempt to replace the menacing one that Berkowitz, now 64, adopted in taunting letters written to police and a newspaper columnist during a deadly rampage that gripped the city in fear 40 years ago.

His 13-month shooting spree, which killed six people and wounded seven others, will be revisited in the Investigation Discovery documentary Son of Sam: The Hunt for a Killer, premiering Aug. 5 and exclusively previewed in a clip above.

Serving six consecutive terms of 25 years-to-life since pleading guilty to murder in May 1978, Berkowitz “has to wake up every day and remember what he did to innocent people,” minister Roxanne Tauriello, who is a regular visitor to him in prison, tells PEOPLE.

“David grieves over that a lot, and you can’t say to him — you never want to say ‘Son of Sam’ in front of him,” Tauriello says. “He never uses that name, ever.”

“He is genuinely sorrowful and does not want to get out of prison,” she says. “He knows he deserved to die and deserves to be exactly where he is.”

• For more on the Son of Sam case then and now, subscribe now to PEOPLE or pick up this week’s issue, on newsstands Friday.

Berkowitz’s shootings began on July 29, 1976, when he opened fire on two young women parked outside a Bronx apartment, instantly killing one of them, 18-year-old Donna Lauria. Investigators eventually linked his attacks — several of which targeted couples parked in dimly lit lovers’ lanes — by the .44-caliber handgun he used in all of them.

The cat-and-mouse game he played with police escalated after a shooting the next year, on April 17, 1977, when Berkowitz first called himself the “Son of Sam” in a letter left behind for authorities.

The next month, on May 30, another letter from the killer delivered to then-New York Daily News columnist Jimmy Breslin fed the growing panic.

“He is very aware of the public’s fear and incredible fascination with him,” says criminologist Scott Bonn, who interviewed Berkowitz in prison in 2013 for his book Why We Love Serial Killers: The Curious Appeal of the World’s Most Savage Murderers.

“He is a gnome-looking, bald, chubby guy with red cheeks, and he comes bouncing in to meet you,” Bonn tells PEOPLE. “He is quite different from the sullen ‘Son of Sam’ from the ’70s.”

After his capture, Berkowitz’s claims that he’d been ordered to kill by a demon (through a barking dog) initially led him to be judged mentally unfit. After that ruling was reversed and he was ordered to face charges, Berkowitz avoided a trial by pleading guilty.

In 1987, Bonn says, Berkowitz “reached a bottoming-out in prison. He didn’t want to live anymore and contemplated suicide.” But Berkowitz told Bonn that God forgave him after a dark night of despair, and he says he found religion that same year.

“He claims to be a born-again Christian,” Bonn says. Called “Brother Dave” by other inmates, Berkowitz now participates in an online ministry that is operated for him by evangelical Christians.

“He gets thousands of hits for that site because he is an interesting character,” Bonn says.

Adds minister Tauriello: “I cannot reconcile his deeds with the person I know today. It is hard to believe that at one time he was so wicked, so evil, so violent.”

In an interview with ID, however, retired N.Y.C. police Capt. Joe Borrelli wasn’t sold on Berkowitz’s conversion, saying, “It doesn’t make up for all those young women that he killed.”

“He is not putting on a façade, and he is not doing anything to get out of prison,” Tauriello says, noting that “years ago he wrote a letter to Gov. Pataki stating he does not want to come out.”

“He told me in conversations that he deserved to die, that he should have died, but at that time in New York, they did not have the death penalty,” she says. “He destroyed the lives of his victims, the parents of his victims and those that survived, who have to live with the fear of that.”

Now, according to Tauriello, Berkowitz says “one of his goals is to warn young people on the road to destruction. One of his ministries is to reach out to young people to show them the consequences of actions.”

Special Tip Update!

For Evanna Lynch, Life After Luna Lovegood Is A Different Kind Of Magic

Earlier this year, Evanna Lynch ― the actress who got her start when she was cast at Luna Lovegood in the “Harry Potter” film series ― announced on Instagram that she was ready to take on new endeavors.

“I feel like I’m stuck in my 18-year-old self artistically when I actually have a lot more to say,” the actress wrote on Instagram, addressing her choice to move on from regularly attending “Harry Potter” conventions.

Now, just a few months later, she’s starring in a forthcoming play in London, an update on Edna Walsh’s “Disco Pigs,” a story about a pair of teens who speak in their own intimate, expressive language. Lynch says the play is in keeping with the types of roles she hopes to pursue in the future: bold characters and unabashed misfits.

Below, Lynch discusses her recent starring role in the indie film “My Name is Emily,” and why she can’t help but return to Hogwarts stories, which, she says, have a “resetting effect” on her.

First, I’d love to hear about  “Disco Pigs.” How did you get involved with the project?

I wanted to do theater for a while, but I only recently moved to London so I only had that opportunity for a while.

I loved the script; it was so different from anything I’d read before. The language is so strange and idiosyncratic. I find the story very romantic. It’s these two teenagers, and they have their own little world. I always connect to characters who do things their own way, and who don’t really set their standards by other people.

What for you was the biggest difference between stage acting and on-screen acting?

On-screen it’s nice because you get to film over a long period of time. Stage is different because ― for this play, anyway, it’s only an hour. Whereas on film you mull with it, you know, a month to six weeks, probably six to eight weeks, you’re with the character every single day, obsessed with them, thinking of them.

[In theater] you’re running on adrenaline. There’s a lot of fear. That aspect you don’t have in film, which is nice, it takes the pressure off.

You also had a fairly recent film that was released in the U.S. this year, “My Name is Emily.” This was your first starring role in a film. How was that experience different from your past work?

For one thing it was an independent movie, so there were a lot fewer resources. More responsibility, which I find very exciting. I felt like I was more of a collaborator. And I don’t know if that’s just about the position I was in, or if that’s my age. Because when I started the “Potter” films I was 14, I was more of a child, and on “My Name Is Emily,” that was the first time I was a collaborating artist. That was really exciting.

I just focused on the work. I’m not trying to make friends with everyone. I’ve seen with other films, the central cast member will try to really welcome everyone and I thought about that, but it’s just not me. I’m quite shy, I’m quite introverted, I like to sit and watch people. I feel like that’s how I learn about people, how I study them. So, it wasn’t a whole lot different for me. Yes, there was added pressure, but you have to do everything you can to not think about the pressure.

I think I went through most of primary school and high school just feeling like I hadn’t really met my people, and “Harry Potter” felt like my people. They were the kind of friends I wanted to have.
Evanna Lynch

By the time you were cast as Luna you were already a fan of the “Potter” books. What did you love most about the books?

I just loved it because it really felt like I understood the people ― the teenagers. I just felt like they were my friends. I loved that it was just like a bunch of misfits, and they were the heroes of the story. And I’d never read a book series before where the characters were so relatable, and inspiring in how relatable they were. I felt what they were doing, and what they were grappling with. The books just had this amazing ability to make me feel not alone. And I think I went through most of primary school and high school just feeling like I hadn’t really met my people, and “Harry Potter” felt like my people. They were the kind of friends I wanted to have.

Of course it was also a more fascinating world than what I was involved in. It just made me believe in things that were different.

I actually read Prisoner of Azkaban around Christmastime. I had a craving for it; I don’t know why. I often do press events and conventions, and I get asked a lot of questions. It was a point of pride that I was like a walking encyclopedia for the books. And I realized my trivia had been slipping the last few years. I was like, oh, this can’t fall away. This is something I need to maintain.

It’s just me being a nerd. The books almost have a resetting effect on me. They bring me back to who I am. And the films are sort of different because it became a career, and it’s so entwined with who I am as a public figure, which I don’t want to think about when I’m reading. The books still remind me of who I am.

Do you have a favorite “Potter” character besides Luna?

I always liked Dumbledore because he’s so wise, and he’s got such a deep mind and thinks so deeply on things, but he’s also able to enjoy the finer things in life. I like that.

And then recently I realized I really like [Gilderoy] Lockhart. I sort of admire that obliviousness he has. He doesn’t seem to be aware of what people think of him, or that not everyone wants his autograph. I think I’m probably too self-conscious. Not in an insecure way, but I have this paranoid thing where I’ll often think people are giving me a weird look or something. My best friend always points it out, he’s like, really, it’s not about you. […] My mind makes up weird stories, and I started to really love Lockhart for how he doesn’t do that. He does the opposite. He assumes everyone loves him. I just think it’s so funny.

The films […] became a career, and it’s so entwined with who I am as a public figure, which I don’t want to think about when I’m reading. The books still remind me of who I am.

I want to ask about your activist work. It seems that you use your platform to promote your causes ― especially veganism. Do you foresee yourself trying for roles that promote your political message?

For me, art can be political, but I don’t think you should force it. I think the best way to make people feel is just story for the sake of story.

I mean, I do often think about maybe working on a book or something like that, told from the animals’ eyes. The stories that really inspired me to be vegan ― well, vegetarian first, and then vegan ― and just to care about animals in the first place, were things like watching “Babe,” or watching “Chicken Run.” That, I think, is a very powerful tool. Other than that I do like to keep activism and art separate. I think if you try too hard for it to be worthy and have a message, it just ― I think it poisons it a little bit. Or, not poisons, but it loses its integrity.

Even books like “Harry Potter,” I don’t feel like it’s trying to force it down our throats that like, fascism is bad, but you pick up those things by osmosis of what the characters feel. Those kinds of stories have a much more powerful effect on me personally.

What would you say you’re looking for most in acting roles going forward?

Bold characters. I always look up to people who are very unapologetic. Whether their morals are in line with mine ― say for example, the character in “Disco Pigs.” She has no moral compass, really. She’s 17, for one thing. But they’re always eating sausages, they don’t give a damn. I didn’t see that as a reason not to admire her, because obviously that’s her blind spot, but what I liked about her was that she was so sure of what she was doing, such a unique person, such an individual. That’s what it is in characters. I just want to find something individual, something about them that makes them an outsider, and that encourages me to be more that way. Because I think if I’m around other people I tend to want to fit in. I think characters in books and in movies that are complete individuals and who are not apologizing for it, they remind me to be myself. That’s why I like the character Luna Lovegood so much. I just want to have more of that energy.

From June 1 to 30, HuffPost is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the very first “Harry Potter” book by reminiscing about all things Hogwarts. Accio childhood memories.

Cher Is Gifting Us With A Broadway Musical Based On Her Life

Thanks to Cher, we’re ready to leave this soggy, half-eaten sandwich of a year behind and fast forward to the bright (and likely beaded) future of 2018.

In a tweet heard ‘round the divasphere on Tuesday night, the Goddess of Pop announced that a musical based on her life is set to arrive on Broadway next year. It will have actors. It will have dancers. It will have singers. And, according to our best guesses, it will have the greatest costumes and wigs to ever grace the Great White Way.

The show will feature hits from throughout Cher’s decadeslong career. So far, we know that Jason Moore (”Avenue Q,” “Pitch Perfect”) is set to direct the musical, Rick Elice (”Jersey Boys”) is set to write the book, and Jeffrey Seller (”Hamilton”) and Flody Suarez (”Rise”) are set to produce.

The Hollywood Reporter noted that Cher previously tweeted approval of the musical back in January ― after an “an ultra-secretive reading of the show” featuring Jillian Mueller, Lena Hall and Lesli Margherita as different Chers ― exclaiming, “I sobbed & laughed, & I was prepared not 2like it. Audience clapped after songs, & gave it standing ovation.”

A November 2016 casting notice revealed that characters dubbed Babe, Lady and Star will represent Cher at various times in her life. A few other figures we can expect to see cast in the musical: Sonny Bono, Cher’s parents, Bob Mackie, David Geffen, Gregg Allman, Robert Altman, Rob Camilletti and, yes, Sigmund Freud.

Cher has yet to reveal more details since her Tuesday evening tweet. In fact, shortly after her all-caps announcement, she resumed her usual social media duties: calling out President Donald Trump.

NYC Dogs In Bags Are What You Need In Your Life Right Now

The MTA in New York City has a ban that prevents any subway rider from bringing a dog on the train… unless that dog fits in a “container.”

The stipulation also indicates that the dog-in-container must be carried “in a manner which would not annoy passengers.” New Yorkers, being the ingenious human beings they are, have discovered truly incredible solutions to work around this rule:

That tweet of an amalgam of dogs-in-bags surfaced on Tuesday, resurrecting the excitement of seeing a dog on the move in NYC for all of Twitter. So, we did you all a favor and rounded up some of our favorite subway dog snaps!

Seriously, there are all kinds of dogs hangin’ out in all kinds of bags:

Pups on the go are the best, aren’t they? Here is what we look like when we see dogs on the subway in bags:

People of NYC: please never stop traveling with your dogs.

Mario Testino Goes Larger Than Life in Berlin

MARIO MAKES IT BIG: Mario Testino’s “Undressed” is the Helmut Newton Foundation’s largest-scale show to date. In this exhibit of 50 published and private photographs of men and women often wearing nothing more than their tattoos, Testino blew up his images to completely fill the walls in three halls of Berlin’s graciously proportioned Museum of Photography.
Looming over 10 feet from the ceiling to the walls’ lower wood moldings, and spanning sometimes 23 feet in width, this site-specific installation conceived exclusively for the Helmut Newton Foundation offers a spectacular yet also intimate view. For as the photographer noted prior to the show’s opening June 2, the enormous size and full bleed from corner to corner means there are no distractions. The viewer is almost compelled to immerse his or herself in the images, turning from “a voyeur into a participant. We’re in a moment when people want to interact with what they see, and not just look. They want to be part of it, so who knows? Maybe people will now go home and take photos of each other like this.”
That means equal undressing rights for all, with full frontals, male and female, to enticing back views, moments of amorous play

This Tweet Scarily Sums Up Life As A Journalist Right Now

Being a journalist in today’s political climate is like being a zookeeper at a zoo where all the animals you’re responsible for are perpetually running amok.

There hasn’t been a day where the top news hasn’t been something huge and related to the White House. The result for those responsible in disseminating that news is, well, exhaustion.

In fact, Twitter did a damn good job in summing it up best:

Preach.

The irony of this is that if it were 2005, Tiger Woods getting a DUI would’ve been the scandal. Instead, we have Trump chaos, collusion with Russia, and surely more madness to come.

Le sigh. The year isn’t even halfway over yet.

Artist Turns Life With His Wife Into Adorably Relatable Comics

Artist Yehuda Devir takes life with his wife Maya in Tel Aviv and turns it into relatable comic book-style illustrations.

The pair has been together for eight years and will be celebrating their first wedding anniversary in two months.

“My inspiration for these comics is simply our daily lives,” the artist told HuffPost. “These are real cases that happen to us.”

The couple met while they were in the army, became best friends and, over time, the platonic relationship turned into a romantic one.

“Because of her, I make these illustrations ― she just gives me laughter and happiness for life,” Devir told HuffPost. “She is also an artist, in my opinion, better than me, and I sometimes get her reviews about the illustrations I do.”

When Ballet Is Your Life, What Does Life After Ballet Look Like?

For a generation of ballerinas, Wendy Whelan was a walking goddess. The former New York City Ballet principal dancer joined the company at 17, and was quickly singled out for promotion and praise. She served as a muse for multiple then-up-and-coming choreographers and would go on to have more new ballets made for her than any other dancer in the company’s history. She became the defining American ballerina of her generation.

All the while, she says in a new documentary, she was asking herself, “What the fuck is it going to be like when I can’t do this any more?”

In 2013, she found out.

At the time, Whelan was 46 years old, which is all but ancient by ballerina standards. Ballet is so punishing on the body, and the standard demanded by top companies so high, that most women peak by their 30th birthdays and retire not long after. When Misty Copeland was promoted to the top rank of American Ballet Theater in 2015, it was a bittersweet moment: she’d been promoted at last, but at the age of 32, she probably didn’t have many dancing years left in her. Whelan, whose professional ballet career lasted three decades, was truly an anomaly, a ballet institution who outlasted some of her younger colleagues by years.

By 46, she noticed that she was being cast in fewer ballets, including, to her chagrin, the iconic Nutcracker, in which she’d been dancing the role of the Sugarplum Fairy for years. Her boss, Ballet Master Peter Martins, hinted that it might be time for her to move on. And then, her hip started hurting.

The documentary “Wendy Whelan: Restless Creature” finds Whelan preparing for surgery to repair a labral tear, which has made even walking across the stage an agony. She travels to Vail, Colorado, and puts herself in the hands of one of the world’s best hip surgeons, whose walls are covered in the jerseys of the pro athletes he’s treated. This is the man people see when they need to get back in the game, she explains. She needs to do just that, she says, especially since “I don’t have a ton of time left at my game.”

”Restless Creature” shows us Whelan’s recovery from the surgery (after first showing us the surgery itself, in rather gruesome detail), and her return to New York to contemplate what comes after ballet. She gets off crutches, returns to the ballet studio and begins to branch out into contemporary dance, hoping that it will be less brutal on her body. But it soon becomes clear that her body can’t take a return to ballet in addition to her ambitious plan to create a contemporary dance program and tour it all over the country. She has to focus on ballet for what little time she has left before retirement becomes inevitable.

Throughout the film, Whelan consults her former colleagues, all of whom have already retired. She asks them: How did you do this? How did you walk away from the only job you’ve ever had, the thing you’ve been working toward almost since you could walk? Who are you when you’re a ballerina who can’t do ballet any more?

Career paths out of ballet are notoriously narrow. Dancers usually skip college, and even the end of high school, to devote themselves to dancing in their late teens and early 20s, which means that when they retire from dancing, they’re out in the job market without an entry-level degree. Some dancers go on to teach or coach, and some to choreograph, though the latter path is often even less stable, predictable or lucrative than being a dancer. Some go into ballet-adjacent work, like dance photography. Some will be picked to run companies; Pacific Northwest Ballet, Miami City Ballet, Washington Ballet and Pennsylvania Ballet are all run by alumni of the New York City Ballet or American Ballet Theater. But there are only so many ballet companies to run, and turnover at the top can be infrequent.

Besides, as Whelan explains in the film, she hadn’t made a plan for her post-ballet life; while some of her colleagues were setting themselves up for the next step, she was busy just … dancing.

At its core, “Restless Creature” is a film about grief. We watch as Whelan comes to the realization that her career is ending; that she’ll soon lose the structure of morning class and rehearsal and performance that have defined her days for decades; that she’ll leave behind a large piece of herself, and her identity, when she leaves the Lincoln Center stage for the last time. She moves through the stages of grieving, showing the camera very little anger, and the film ends with her farewell performance in October 2014, which featured yet more new works made just for her.

Now, she’s “really close to the end” of that grieving process, she told HuffPost in a phone interview. She didn’t go to the ballet for a while after she retired, but, she says, now she can go “and not feel pangs in the same way. I’m really happy about that. I can watch works that were made for me and feel a separation, and I’m really glad about that.”

She’s still performing. Her collaboration with the cadre of contemporary choreographers she assembled at the end of her time at City Ballet has toured around the country, and she opened the Joyce Theater’s spring season this year. She’s started coaching other dancers, and recently set a piece by Alexei Ratmansky with Pacific Northwest Ballet — meaning, she learned every step and movement of the ballet and then taught them all to the dancers at that company.

In her new life as a contemporary dancer, she says, her body and her mind have begun working differently. “I’ve let my body soften,” she says. “I’ve let it relax. There’s a lot of anxiety in the ballet world and nervousness,” but in contemporary dance, she feels more grounded. “There’s this calmness that I didn’t have in ballet because I was always up so high on my toes. For me there’s a parallel between how I was dancing and how I was feeling.” After decades of sewing ribbons onto pointe shoes every night, she now rehearses in socks, or bare feet, or canvas ballet flats.

Her new role allows her far more artistic control than she had as a ballerina. She chooses who choreographs on her, she designs programs, she wields far more power than she could as a dancer — something most ballerinas never get to experience before or after they retire. It took some getting used to. “I was so comfortable with my ballet power, my dancer power, that to have a voice, the comfort with having a voice, is slower to come to me,” she says. “I’ve always had a point of view, but to be in the front of the room, I didn’t move into a front of the room position until I retired, and that was really slow. “ While contemporary dance sees more women at the front of the room — running rehearsals instead of dancing in them — than classical ballet does, there’s still an enormous gender imbalance. Most dance companies are run by men, and most choreographers (even those with whom Whelan now collaborates) are men.

Above all, Whelan doesn’t plan to stop dancing, even if she’s not dancing ballet anymore. After she retired, she had a full hip replacement, which she says left her totally pain-free. She says that good genes and “great energy” in her family gave her a body that took easily to dance and was able to keep dancing long after most people have to stop, “a lucky body, not a great body.”

Still, she’s no longer on the regimented rehearsal schedule of a principal ballerina, and when asked what she most misses and least misses, she answers both questions the same way: “I really miss dancing all day long,” she says. “But something I really love is not dancing all day long. I love that I can’t rely on dancing all day long to stay creative.” After the heartbreak of leaving her old self behind, she’s found that she didn’t need it as much as she thought, or feared.

As for the beautiful and cruel ballet slippers that she put on her feet every day for almost 40 years, the bodily extensions that are synonymous with the ballerina, does she miss those? “Sometimes I miss being en pointe, but not a whole lot,” she says. “Every once and a while I would love to float for a minute on a shoe. But for the most part, I did it long enough that it’s OK.”

”Wendy Whelan: Restless Creature” opens June 9th and will be in limited release.
