How To Live Longer So You Can Be Around For People Who Need You

Who wouldn’t want to live to see 100? We bet Ruth Bader Ginsburg would. Imagine a few extra years to spend with loved ones, see the world, or cast the deciding vote in even more high court decisions.

Here are several research-backed tips to help you live longer. They’re so simple, you can work them into the busiest routines ― even that of, hypothetically, a Supreme Court justice.

1. Follow a Mediterranean diet.

A 2011 study found that elderly individuals who eat fish, produce and foods high in healthy fats may have a 20 percent increased chance of living longer compared to their peers who don’t follow a so-called Mediterranean diet. This would definitely apply to people who are 84.

2. Spend time with good friends.

Strong social bonds can have a positive influence on your health. Research shows those who have close connections with others are at lower risk of dying early than those who don’t. So don’t shut out your closest pals, even those who vehemently disagree with you politically.

3. Embrace aging.

Getting older is the one thing every person must deal with ― so don’t make a federal case out of it! A study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology found that adults who had a positive outlook on aging lived an average of seven years longer than those who had a dissenting opinion of the aging process.

4. Consider getting married. (Or remarried. Or supporting marriage for everyone.)

More good news for people who just want to have a state-recognized family of their own: Research shows that marriage can boost a person’s wellbeing. A 2013 Danish study published in the International Journal of Epidemiology also found that “among men in Denmark, it is more dangerous to be unmarried or divorced than to be married to another man.” At press time, same-sex marriages are legal in the United States.

5. Manage your stress.

This one is really important for everyone, especially for those with a high-profile career or a full caseload to judge. Studies show that excessive or chronic stress can shave time off your lifespan, which could mean missing out on watershed moments in American jurisprudence. Looking for some ways to keep your worries at bay? Here are 100 tricks to get you started (that also happens to be a wonderful age).

6. Help others.

There’s power in lending a hand. Those who volunteer for selfless reasons live longer than those who do it for more personal reasons or those who aren’t altruistic at all, according to a 2011 study. Or, as Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg recently said of the best way to live a meaningful life, “One lives not just for oneself, but for one’s community.”

7.  Hit the gym.

Just a little bit of exercise can work wonders. Being active can extend your life by about four to seven years, or well past the next presidential election. The recommended amount of physical activity is approximately 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week. Remember to consult your doctor or a fitness expert before beginning any new exercise regimen. (Washington, D.C.-based trainer Bryant Johnson is supposed to be great.)

Nick Viall Is No Longer A ‘Bachelor’

Warning: Spoilers for the “The Bachelor” Season 21 finale.

Nick Viall’s had a few shots at finding love on “The Bachelor” franchise. Thankfully, he finally got his happy ending on Monday night. And it was, well, dramatic, of course.

After weeks of tears, one-on-one dates, naps and cheese pasta, the 36-year-old proposed to Vanessa Grimaldi with a Neil Lane diamond ring. (Duh!)

“I will never forget the first moment I saw you … and the first moment I started falling in love with you,” he said, adding, “There have been plenty of times where I wanted to fight it, but I don’t want to fight it anymore.”

“Nick, when I’m with you, I’m the happiest I’ve ever been,” she said.

Raven Gates was the runner-up. Nick told her through tears, “I think about how much I’ve grown to care about you, respect you, and how much love I have for you … I just don’t know if I’m in love.”

He added, “I’m just torn up inside letting you go.”

When Nick said, “I’m going to miss you,” Raven answered, confidently, “I know.”

Nick and Vanessa had an immediate connection. Although they’ve gone back and forth about their plans regarding where to live ― Nick is Los Angeles-based while Vanessa resides in Montreal, Canada ― it appears their love for each other is more important than the distance.

“It’s sometimes strange how similar we are, which I think it’s great and sometimes it concerns me,” Nick told Vanessa on the show. “I’m just worried about the fact that, sometimes, it could complicate things. There might be some strong conversations because we’re passionate people, and we want what we want. [But] if we, in our hearts, decide to get engaged, it’s because that’s how we feel.”

Well, apparently they felt they were meant to be together. Congrats to the happy couple!

Ben Affleck And Antoine Fuqua Are No Longer Directing ‘The Batman’ And ‘Scarface,’ Respectively

Two high-profile directors, Ben Affleck and Antoine Fuqua, stepped down from their high-profile reboots on Tuesday night, one to focus on his acting duties and the other to make a sequel instead. Hollywood roars on!

The first was Affleck, who announced in 2015 his plans to co-write and direct a standalone Batman movie. Then Fuqua said he would be abandoning a reboot of the gangster classic “Scarface.”

Technically, Affleck’s vision for “The Batman” ― inspired by his work on last year’s “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” ― was partly influenced by the DC comic books and partly by an original story. As of a Jan. 9 appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” Affleck said he was indeed directing the upcoming film, then complained because no one seemed interested in what he was promoting at the time, the soon-to-be box-office bummer “Live By Night.”

But apparently portraying the Caped Crusader was plenty for the elder Affleck brother, who will still star in and produce the movie, according to Variety.

“There are certain characters who hold a special place in the hearts of millions. Performing this role demands focus, passion and the very best performance I can give,” the actor said in a statement. “It has become clear that I cannot do both jobs to the level they require. Together with the studio, I have decided to find a partner in a director who will collaborate with me on this massive film. I am still in this, and we are making it, but we are currently looking for a director. I remain extremely committed to this project, and look forward to bringing this to life for fans around the world.”

Affleck’s replacement probably won’t be “Batman v Superman” director Zack Snyder, who is busy making this year’s “Justice League,” in which Affleck is set to appear as part of a three-picture contract with Warner Bros. Variety reports that “Cloverfield” and “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” director Matt Reeves’ name has been tossed around as a possible substitute.

This is not the first time a star director has exited a Batman sequel. After Warner Bros. became nervous that Tim Burton had made 1992’s “Batman Returns” too dark for children, the studio hired Joel Schumacher as a replacement. Revenue soared, but reviews dwindled. Today, Schumacher’s two Batman installments are often mocked. (No pressure, Ben!)

As for “Scarface,” director Fuqua (”Training Day,” “Olympus Has Fallen”) had to choose between that film and a sequel to 2014’s “The Equalizer,” which Variety and The Hollywood Reporter indicate is on the fast track at Sony, with Denzel Washington slated to reprise his role. Fuqua had already spent considerable time developing the “Equalizer” follow-up, so he picked that project.

The upcoming “Scarface” will be the second reboot of Howard Hawks and Richard Rosson’s 1932 film loosely based on the life of Al Capone. (The first remake was Brian De Palma’s 1983 version starring Al Pacino.) Diego Luno, fresh off a breakout role in “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” is set to portray Tony Montana, the movie’s central drug kingpin.

“Scarface” has a 2018 release in mind, while “The Batman” hasn’t announced a target date.

Don’t Buy Another Pair of Jeans Until You Read This: The Trick for Longer, Leaner Legs

It feels like there are a million different pairs of jeans out there. Some are good and some are…ugly. A pair that fits perfectly is worth a million bucks, while others that don’t do anything for your shape should be tossed as quickly as you can get your arms moving. And even though we just discovered that most of us have way too many pairs in the closet, there’s no time like the new year to toss what doesn’t work and invest in a pair that’s guaranteed to make you look ah-mazing.

dl-1961-jeans

For expert insight on fit, I consulted with Sarah Ahmed, creative director of DL1961, and pestered her about how my legs can look long and lean because, honestly, what girl doesn’t want that?

For length, your best bet is “by far a mid-rise skinny jean. An 8.5- to 9-inch rise really does miracles for the appearance of both the waist and legs.” As an alternative, try a kick flare (it’s the style on the far left above). It’s more subtle than the mega-bells you might be thinking of and can actually add inches, especially if you get your pair tailored to wear with heels or platforms.

If you want to slim stems, Sarah said to look for styles with longer inseams (ask a sales associate to identify some of their options) and try on the darkest shade possible. “A deep blue or black wash tends to smooth the legs, making them appear much leaner.” I brought up the question of moto ribbing, which I think looks eternally cool but can cut legs in a not-so-flattering way. “You can have too much horizontal detailing,” she warned me, suggesting I shop for “ribbing that’s slanted to not have that dreaded digging-in effect.”

What’s your current favorite pair of jeans? Is there a miracle brand that always looks good on you?

Heal and Release What No Longer Serves You

I’m a huge fan of healing and release. As we peel away past layers of ourselves, hurts, limiting beliefs that no longer serve us, and anything else that needs to be cleared, we step more fully into the person we’re here to be in this life.

As part of my TAT Acupressure certification, I get to work with a sweet soul from India as we give one another sessions. In our most recent session, we both showed up with a similar focus. She was focusing on feeling like she didn’t have enough time and always feeling rushed. I was focused on feeling the pressure that comes with major expansion in my business, and the fears and worries of someone who has crashed and burned spectacularly in a past businesses.

The fears we carry from our past weigh us down, and often cause us to recreate the exact same situations we set out to avoid.

During our sessions we focus on silent conversation with whoever or whatever shows up… and there I was, facing my younger, less experienced self. The person who, while building a pretty great and successful business, also made some really poor choices and decisions financially, with clients, and just in life in general.

When my younger self appeared to me, a whole swell of love and compassion washed over me. I found myself saying to her that it was okay… more than okay. All of what she went through was so necessary and so needed, and that without her errors and poor choices, I wouldn’t be the business owner I am today. I wouldn’t have the business I have today, doing the work I do, completely fulfilled and in love with every aspect of it.

More importantly, I wouldn’t be as fully aligned as I am today, in life, business and relationships.

Each and every misstep brought me closer to this space, and every mistake and failure has taught me so much. I’ve built a really solid business with an amazing team, serving so many beautiful and inspiring individuals around the world. I’ve learned how and where I need support, what works and what doesn’t, who I really want to serve and support, and how to best deliver my work.

The mistakes are a huge part of my getting to this point.

I left my session feeling totally calm. That part of me that has been so afraid of repeating past mistakes finally feels at peace. Expressing compassion and appreciation to that older version of me… wow. Healing and release is one of my favorite things in the world. It allows you to grow more completely into the person you’re here to be, and show up more fully in your life, relationships, and work.

2014-12-18-HealRelease.12.2014.Temp_C.jpg

Heal and Release What No Longer Serves You

1. Recognize the layers that are at play.

It took me some time to realize that much of the fear, worry, and stress I had in my business came so heavily from my past experiences. I’ve done a lot of work around faith and trust, and I’ve felt so clear that everything is really aligning for me right now in an amazing way… yet I felt a lot of fear. Fear that it was all going to come crashing down more spectacularly than I’d ever experienced before. Fear that I didn’t have what it would take to continue growing, expanding, serving, creating, and showing up how I desire to.

You have to take pause and really dive into the heart of what’s coming up for you. Sure, life may be hard and stressful right now, things may be off, but is the fear, worry, stress, or overwhelm truly coming from this moment? Or is it coming from a past hurt, failure, or period of your life? Are you projecting beliefs you cling to onto people and moments that don’t warrant them? Dive in with curiosity (not judgement) and see what you uncover.

2. Heal the layers that need healing.

Sometimes in order to truly move forward, we need to forgive someone we never thought we could. Sometimes that person is ourselves, the one who made mistakes or hurt others. Sometimes we need to send light and love to older versions of ourselves, and show some compassion for what we were going through. Sometimes we need to rebuild trust, reconnect to our truth, and accept ourselves exactly as we are. This will look different depending on the layer that’s coming up. My favorite forgiveness exercise is Hoʻoponopono, the ancient Hawaiian practice of reconciliation and forgiveness.

Simply sit with the statement, “I love you. I’m sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you.” You can do this while tapping with EFT, in meditation, or while sitting in front of the mirror looking into your own eyes (a really uncomfortable and powerful practice). I’m also a huge fan of Acupressure for releasing attachments, resonance, and stuck emotions.

3. Release it.

Sometimes we become so attached to our stories, beliefs, and limited ways of operating in the world that it’s terribly uncomfortable to be without them. But if you want to experience a life, relationship, or work you really love, you have to release. Take all the pages you journaled on through your healing and burn them. Write a letter or make a call and create closure. Use Acupressure to remove it for good. Bring yourself back to the present moment, fully healed and whole, and engage in what’s in front of you right now.

When you’ve really worked through this process, you’ll feel more peaceful, focused, aligned, and on purpose. There’s no longer anything holding you back from doing and becoming anything you desire… except maybe the next layer.

4. Repeat as often as you need.

Here’s the thing… there are so many layers. Layers upon layers upon layers will come up for you as you work to create more joy, purpose, fulfillment, and alignment in your life. It’s natural! We pick up so much “stuff” from our childhood, as we grow up, and all the experiences that we have in life. All relationships leave energy and imprints, from family to friends to partners. All experiences leave imprints as well. With a world and people made up entirely of energy, it’s impossible to avoid being effected by what’s happening to and around you. Continue this process as often as you need, and remember that you’re not broken if another layer surfaces, you’re just human.

Take action now!

Where are you feeling stuck or held back due to past experiences, beliefs, or versions of yourself? Work through the steps above and start healing and releasing those layers.
