Looking for a Retro Mini Console? Here’s Where to Find Them

If you buy something through this post, IGN may get a share of the sale. For more, read our Terms of Use.

Plug and play retro consoles have come a long way. We still have the simple consoles with the composite video cables you can buy pretty much anywhere, but the NES Classic introduced a whole new class or boutique, collector-quality retro consoles that output through an HDMI cable. The fact the original mini, the NES Classic, was so hard to find for so long, and eventually inspired a second, much more plentiful run, shows there is enormous demand for these.

The adorable mini Super NES and NES aren’t hard to come by anymore, and the PlayStation Classic can still be picked up at some retailers. The very cool C64 Mini is the first competent retro all-in-one computer console, and it just came out and can be scooped up, too, so you can finally see how those C64 games look in crisp, digital HDMI output.

Sarah Stage Gets Ready for Her Last Month of Pregnancy: ‘Looking Forward to Meeting Baby Boy’

On month left to go!

Sarah Stage is ready to meet her new baby boy in October. The model, 33, thanked her followers for supporting her through her pregnancy on Thursday.

“Looking forward to meeting baby boy NEXT MONTH!!!” she writes. “Baby flipped and is now head down and weighs a little over 4.5 lbs.”

“It’s been quite an experience sharing my pregnancy journey so far but I really appreciate all of the positive support from many of you!! I try to always message you back and it’s been great hearing your stories as well!”

Stage also shared a video of her workout that day, which included weighted lunges and squats, and side planks alongside her first son, James, 2.

RELATED VIDEO: Sarah Stage Reveals She’s Gained Just 18 Lbs. in Almost 8 Months of Pregnancy

In a workout video from Aug. 31, Stage said that despite constantly sharing the benefits of exercise during pregnancy, there are still people who accuse her of harming her baby.

“#8monthspregnant and I’m just doing the best that I can and what I believe is the healthiest for baby and myself,” she wrote. “There STILL seems to be some confusion and harsh ignorant opinions about exercising while pregnant and some of you believe it’s putting baby in danger. Do your research and you will see that working out while pregnant (with your doctors consent) has many benefits for mom and baby!”

Stage added words of encouragement for other women.

“Soooooo for all of the women out there who are doing the best they can, I’m proud of you!!! Creating life inside of us is a huge responsibility and we need to support each other instead of judging!!”

Nick Cannon Is Not Looking for Love After Mariah Carey Split: ‘I’m Broken, I’m Shattered’

Three years after his split with Mariah Carey, Nick Cannon is still shattered.

At the Kids Choice Sports Awards on Thursday, Cannon, 36, told Entertainment Tonight that he is not currently looking to open up his heart to someone else.

“I’m broken. I’m shattered,” he said.

Cannon married the singing legend in 2008, but the couple broke up in 2014. They have two children together, 6-year-old twins Moroccan and Monroe.

On February 21, Cannon happily welcomed his third child, and first with former Miss Arizona U.S.A. Brittany Bell, even though they are no longer an item.

When Cannon first announced that he was expecting another baby, PEOPLE reported his saying that he does not consider Bell his “ex.” Rather, Carey was his last ex, and that “everybody else is people that I’ve known, loved and cared for.”

So although Cannon might not be involved in anything serious right now, he did admit that he’s “always dating.”

“Why not? I’m a single man. I’m supposed to date,” he said.

Carey, on the other hand, has been seen out with her on-again-off-again boyfriend Bryan Tanaka, swimming with sharks over the July 4th weekend. She had also been engaged to James Packer before they broke up in 2016.

Despite Cannon’s single status, he seems fond of Tanaka.

“He’s a nice guy,” Cannon shared.

FROM PEN: Nick Cannon on His Broadway Inspiration for Wild’n Out

And even though Carey has moved on, Cannon can still cherish the memories the two had together.

“That was a special time. It was, but we made some amazing children together, and so we’ll always be together,” he said.

Barack And Michelle Obama Are Back From Vacation, And They’re Looking Slick

Barack and Michelle Obama are back from vacation and looking great.

The former president and FLOTUS made an appearance in Chicago on Wednesday to discuss plans for the Obama Presidential Center.

Michelle wore a gorgeous black and white dress that reminded us of the sleek printed dresses from her White House wardrobe. Barack looked relaxed in a black suit, white shirt and no tie.

At the event, Obama announced that he and Michelle will donate $ 2 million of their own money toward jobs for Chicago youth this summer.

“We don’t want to wait for a building,” he said. “One of the things that we will be starting this year is Michelle and I personally are going to donate $ 2 million to our summer jobs programs here in the community, so that right away, young people can get to work and we can start providing opportunities to all of them.”

Since leaving the White House in January, the two have taken time off to travel. They visited Palm Springs right after the inauguration, followed by a trip to Richard Branson’s private escape, Necker Island.

From there, Obama headed to Marlon Brando’s old escape, Tetiaroa, in the South Pacific. He later met up with Michelle and a few of their famous friend (Tom Hanks, Oprah and Bruce Springsteen) to spend some time on billionaire David Geffen’s yacht.

Needless to say, we’re happy they’re back.

32 Vintage Photos Of Prince Philip Looking SO Sharp

It’s official: Prince Philip is retiring. Buckingham Palace announced Thursday morning that starting this fall, the 96-year-old Duke of Edinburgh will stop carrying out public engagements.

When it comes to style recognition, Philip, who is best known for his one-liners, often takes a back seat to Queen Elizabeth II or younger British royals like the Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry.

But just like his wife, Philip has always had a strong sense of style, whether on official occasions, during polo matches or, you know, hanging out with the Beatles. He was named one of GQ UK’s best-dressed men in Britain in 2014, but his dapper days go way further back.

Although we’ll be seeing less of this long-serving consort, we have plenty of opportunities to both honor him and take style major style inspiration from his life by way of these amazing vintage photos. Check out 32 of our favorite looks below.

If You’re Looking For A Good Time, Just Watch Tom Hanks & Bruce Springsteen Talk About Life

The excitement in the room was contagious as fans filled the Beacon Theatre in New York City on Friday evening to watch legendary actor Tom Hanks interview legendary singer-songwriter Bruce Springsteen for Tribeca Talks: Storytellers

The crowd, made up of mostly middle-aged men and women, sipped on some cold beers and took photos of the empty stage, capturing the seats in which Tom and Bruce would soon to be sitting. A few minutes before showtime, former first daughter Malia Obama, alongside a friend, found her seat in the orchestra section. Then, Hanks’ wife, Rita Wilson, and Springsteen’s wife and bandmate, Patti Scialfa, walked in together with people screaming, “Patti! Woo, Patti!” She waved to the crowd as she found her seat while Wilson and Gayle King stopped to say hello and check in on Malia.

Showtime was fast approaching.

And, soon enough, Hanks and Springsteen were introduced to stage and the crowd went wild. “BRUUUUUCCCEEE,” fans chanted, as they do at every one of his shows. Of course, Hanks made a joke about how he doesn’t understand why we “boo” The Boss, before leaping into a discussion on director Jonathan Demme and his recent death to cancer

“The strongest union of our two names is from the motion picture ‘Philadelphia,’ Hanks, who won a Best Actor Oscar for his role in the Demme-directed 1993 film about a man with AIDS, said. “God bless Jonathan Demme. We just lost him.”

Springsteen also won an Academy Award for the movie for his work on the song “Streets of Philadelphia.”

“I had some lyrics and, eventually, I just came up with that tiny little beat and the track. I figured it wasn’t what [Demme] wanted, [but] I sent it to him anyway. He sent me that opening piece of film where the camera moves slowly through Philly and I said, ‘What do you think?’ And he says, ‘Great.’ And that was it,” Springsteen explained. “Took about two days.”

Hanks chimed in, “If you ever want to have a great moment in a motion picture, walk out the door and make sure they put on a Bruce Springsteen song.” The audience cheered yet again.

Throughout the conversation, Hanks would weave in Springsteen lyrics ― like “My machine, she’s a dud / out stuck in the mud” ― and then request the crowd play a game of “call and response” to finish the phrase ― like “Somewhere in the swamps of Jersey.” Let’s just say true, hardcore Springsteeners were in the building.

Hanks spent the next 50 minutes or so chatting with Springsteen about a lot of what was mentioned in his recent memoir ― everything from his humble beginnings to meeting with Clive Davis and the success of the “cinematic” “Born to Run.” But what really struck a chord was Springsteen’s take on living your life and not letting it pass you by.

We make our own little worlds. They can change the way you approach your own life, but they can’t give you a life.
Bruce Springsteen to Tom Hanks

“All artists at some point believe they can live within their art. What you learn, either quickly or painfully and slowly — what you learn is it’s just your job,” he said. “You get outside of those things in music. We make our own little worlds. They can change the way you approach your own life, but they can’t give you a life. That took me a long time to learn that lesson. Thanks Patti,” he added of his wife, “It was a tremendous struggle to me.”

Springsteen spoke about making his “own little worlds” within his music, explaining that writing lyrics is all about storytelling.

“Basically, you tell a story to save your life,” he said. “When I was very young, I felt like I was drowning. You are not living. A writer tells a story to save his life. Three minutes of bliss and compressed living, that’s why you can get so excited in such a short period of time. It was that life or death hunger. That is what I wanted my characters to be about. Life awaits you, but taking it is a rough and tumble business.”

As for Hanks’ interpretation of all this, the actor put it simply when describing what Bruce, and his concerts, mean to his fans.

“We will follow you into hell, sir.”

She was loudmouthed, rude, overdressed, and he was glad to see that he had an excuse not to like her. She had an unwashed neck.I gave a grin of smug and superior pomposity. Washing behind my ears, and washing my neck properly every day when having a bath had been drilled into me when I was a baby. So I had a squeaky clean neck, hurray, hurray. But it looked like I had been neglecting my elbows and my knees and also my feet. That comes of having no time for leisurely showers because one is in too much of a hurry to shower, get ready, and get out of the house in time to catch the morning’s rush to the rat race. Even if you are not rushing around, and you have all the time in the world to have a long leisurely bath with all those lotions, potions, bath salts, and all those chemical-based stuffs, let us look at natural methods which are going to add to a clean body and exterior. These notions of elementary hygiene and cleanliness were disregarded, in many parts of the world, especially in Europe for centuries, but in other parts of the world, especially in ancient civilizations like Egypt, Persia, Babylon, China, Japan, and even ancient Europe, traditional beauty recipes to take care of the body and keep it young, youthful looking, and beautiful were handed down from grandmother to grandchild, and

Lauren Graham And Alexis Bledel Are Looking Friday Night Dinner Ready

Lorelai and Rory Gilmore ― or, as you may also know them, Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel ― were not necessarily revered for their keen sense of style over the seven-season run of “Gilmore Girls.”

Teasers from the Netflix reboot, slated to debut on Nov. 25, show some sartorial improvement, but we’re pleased to report the duo is looking especially chic for their red carpet appearances beyond Stars Hollow.

Graham and Bledel appeared together at a fan event in Berlin, Germany on Thursday. Graham looked ready as ever for a Friday night dinner in a low-cut, long-sleeved mini dress with gold pumps. Bledel also looked lovely in a black cut-out top, a silver pleated skirt and black heels.

The two also carried twinsy black clutches. Swoon.

They look gorgeous, but we can’t help hoping they kicked off those matching shoes at the end of the night and dug into some of their namesake ice cream straight from the pint. Old habits die hard, right?

The Met’s Costume Institute Breaks Attendance Record With ‘China: Through the Looking Glass’

FOR THE RECORD: The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute has turned up its own summer blockbuster. Over the weekend, “China: Through the Looking Glass” shattered the record-breaking attendance figures for the 2011 exhibition “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty.” As of Sunday afternoon, the Andrew Bolton-curated China show had attracted 671,234 visitors, making it The Costume Institute’s most attended exhibition ever. With three weeks to go until its Labor Day closing, the China exhibition may still gain ground on the Met’s other Top 10 visited exhibitions. The McQueen one ranked eighth with 661,509 visitors.
Given “China: Through the Looking Glass’” cross-cultural appeal – designers from around the globe are represented – it is not surprising that museum-goers speaking a variety of languages can be heard in the show’s 16 different galleries. Creative input from artistic director Wong Kar Wai is artistic director and production designer Nathan Crowley no doubt helped drum up interest. The Met is also favorite stop for many of the city’s estimated 55 million annual visitors. For fiscal year 2015 that ended June 30, The Met welcomed 6.3 people, according to a museum spokeswoman. And unlike the McQueen show, which often left many biding their time in line in

Looking Back: Alexander McQueen’s ‘Highland Rape’ 1995 Runway

Designers from Vivienne Westwood to Oscar de la Renta and Isaac Mizrahi have long mined Scottish tartans for inspiration. But perhaps none is more closely associated with the theme than Alexander McQueen, who broke out with his seminal “Highland Rape” collection in 1995 and reprised it for fall 2006 with his “Widows of Culloden” effort, which he described as “very ‘Macbeth.’” WWD called it “a moment” that lived up to the hype — “fabulously creative and achingly wearable.” Afterward, McQueen said, “I wanted to show a more poetic side to my work….I find beauty in melancholy.”

What Every Woman Should Know About Looking Better in Clothes

“Your sleeve is a 26,” Zac Posen tells me as he prods at the arm of my blazer. “Actually, 25 3/4.”

We’re perched in a back corner of his atelier for a photo-shoot fitting. Together we’ve decided that I’ll wear a shapely skirt suit, and though it’s my size—a 12—it does not fit. The skirt is so tight it won’t zip up. The jacket fits in the shoulders but drowns out my waist. And the mermaid shape is so snug I can’t walk at all. As you can imagine, I’m embarrassed—and briefly consider running for the door.

Lauren-Chan-Zac-Posen

But Posen is unfazed. In fact, he’s already remeasuring so he can tell where to pin, let out, and take in the garments. “Alterations,” he tells me, “are the game changer when it comes to the perfect fit.” And once he’s done, voila: The skirt zips, the jacket accommodates, and I can move. “The right tailoring can make any garment work for any body,” says Posen. “And it can make you feel confident—especially when, these days, a lot of clothing is two-dimensional, but in real life every body is different, and women have curves.”

As a size 12, those words hit home for me. I often feel left out by fashion: In a standard size range, a 12 is regularly too tight; in a plus-size range, even the smallest 14 is too wide. I’ve learned to shop around this conundrum, but I’m still left standing in a fitting room feeling defeated more than I’d like to admit. And I’m not alone. Women of many body types struggle to fit properly into clothing—so let’s do something about it! Isn’t it time we stop trying to fit into our clothes and have our clothes fit us instead? Here are a few suggestions on how to start:

Step One: Ignore Your Size
That’s right—ignore. Sizes vary between countries, companies, and even articles of clothing. The U.S. government has been attempting to fix this problem via regulation since the 1940s, but instead, the situation has actually gotten worse, with the arrival of vanity sizing—in which bigger garments are tagged with smaller numbers to entice customers (that’s why the 00 now exists). “The mentality that the lowest size is best needs to go out the window,” says plus-size model and fashion designer Candice Huffine. “It’s just a number that somebody made up”

Her advice? “Try on several sizes, bigger and smaller,” she says. “Some people have tag phobia: They don’t want to buy a bigger size because of the number on the label. If you care about that, cut the tags out when you get home!”

Step Two: Shop for Your Biggest Part
It’s an easy truth that changes everything: Buy an item to fit the widest part of your body and take the rest of the garment in. That means no more jackets that gape open and muffin-top-inducing jeans. (Amen!)

“I’m a fan of blazers,” says Huffine. “But when I find one that fits through my shoulders and bust, the waist is often too big. I buy for my broadest part, then create an hourglass by taking in the midsection.”

So what does this mean for your shape? If you’re pear-shaped, buy to fit your bottom and take in elsewhere. “I have a small waist and bigger hips,” says celebrity stylist Sara Paulsen, who’s worked with Mindy Kaling. “I often wear A-line and flounce-hem skirts, which balance my proportions. I buy to fit my hip, then take the waist in—I sometimes even nip a fitted skirt right under the butt to create a flattering curve.”

If you’re muscular, the widest part of your body may be your shoulders and biceps. “I tend to have to fit my arms in jackets and take the body in,” says Hannah Bronfman, the founder of fitness site HBfit.com. “I always buy a size larger and make adjustments.”

Height can also make it more difficult to wear off-the-rack clothing. “It’s really hard for short girls to wear midi skirts,” says celebrity stylist Kate Young—whose clients include Selena Gomez and Natalie Portman. “They make you look shorter. Either go maxi—to the floor—or have the hem taken up above the knee.”

Tall women face the opposite dilemma. “Finding clothes that really fit my body has been a lifelong struggle,” says cover girl and denim designer Karlie Kloss. “Growing up, I found that if pants were long enough, they were much too big; if they fit in the waist, they were way too short.” If that sounds like you, buy a length that fits and have a tailor adjust the waist—or look to the solution Kloss herself invented, a Frame Denim line with 40-inch inseams. (Hudson Jeans and the Gap also offer extended lengths.)

Runway-for-bodies

Step Three: Master E-Shopping
When shopping online, it helps to know your bust, waist, and hip measurements; most sites translate their sizes into those numbers. Also, consider brands that take fit into account: Rent the Runway shares photos of customers in each item (with their honest reviews), so you can see how a piece works on a variety of shapes and sizes. There are also companies that help with fitting woes; True Fit, for example, works with brands like Jason Wu and Marc Jacobs to generate suggestions based on your sizes, previous purchases, and its own e-commerce database.

Step Four: Make Your Alterations
The next step is the all-important nipping and tucking. Find a good tailor by asking a trusted boutique, department store, or dry cleaner in your area for a recommendation. If you’re technologically inclined, try in-home tailoring services like Mend and zTailors. Here are a few things a tailor will be able to do to your garments:

  • Create your shape and size. Generally, you can hem or take a seam in as much as four inches; any more will throw the look of the garment off. And ask your tailor to follow the lines of your body. “If you’re working with a dress or jacket, fit the shape of your back,” says Posen. “It’s curved, not a straight line!”
  • Make more room. “People tend to think that you can only make stuff smaller, but you can make things a little bigger too,” says Young. “If a dress is hugging a bit, you can often find some room in the zipper or the side seam to let out.” You can also cut a slit or vent in a dress.
  • Find the right length. “With skinny pants, you can wear any heel height, since the hem should grace the top of the shoe,” says Young. For wide-leg pants, which should hit the floor, “buy two pairs and have one altered to wear with flats and one to wear with heels.” If you buy only one, hem it to work with the heel height you wear most often.
  • Streamline your silhouette. A tailor can close up pockets in a pair of pants,
  • add hook-and-eye closures between gaping buttons on a shirt, or create darts under the bust or in the back of a top to create cleaner lines. If you always tuck in shirts, remove the bottom few buttons so they don’t show under clothes.

Step Five: Consider Custom-Made
Still unsatisfied? Look into made-to- measure clothing, either from a tailor or via sites like eShakti and small boutiques on Etsy. It can be expensive (shirts start at around $ 100, and a full suit can run upwards of $ 1,500) but worth it, at least for frequently worn items. “Custom-made clothing is economical,” argues Posen. “If you take good care of them, your garments can last for a long time.”

Huffine’s made-to-measure must is a cocktail dress—like the Sophie Theal- let she wore to this year’s Pirelli calendar launch. “I needed to wear a bra and I wanted to wear Spanx, so she designed around that,” she says. “In the end, the gown was something I knew I would be comfortable and feel like myself in.”

And that, of course, is the point. The outfit I reach for when I want to feel like my best self? You guessed it: Posen’s expertly tailored skirt suit. With it on, I stand taller, smile bigger, and behave more confidently. “We need to stop letting fashion make us uncomfortable,” says Huffine. “When something is tailored to fit you perfectly, it takes all worry away. Your garment isn’t fighting against you—it’s working with you.”

So the next time you’re standing in the fitting room, remember: It’s not you that needs to be altered. It’s your clothes.

No One Is Looking At Your Fireworks Pictures

Every year in July, Americans wearing their washed-out flag shirts from 2000 that they’ve kept because they only wear them once per year (unless they recently painted their living room) gather together on an open field with picnic blankets and folding chairs to partake in the Sisyphean task of capturing the best moments of a fireworks show on camera. In a poll conducted by the United States Wasting Time Foundation (USWTF), when presented with a list of most patriotic pastimes, 73% of respondents chose “trying to take good pictures at a fireworks show on the 4th of July” over “listening to Bob Dylan,” “attending a baseball game and actually staying until the ninth inning,” and “proudly singing the chorus to ‘American Pie,’ but mumbling through every other verse.”

Human beings have a long history of being interested in capturing these temporal bursts of color in a format they can keep forever, but ironically never look at these photos after July 5th of the year the photo was taken. So dire was this need to immortalize fireworks on our memory cards and overcrowded photo libraries on our phones that camera manufacturers had to have an important meeting.

Leading Camera Manufacturer: “The people want to be able to take pictures of fireworks.”

More Expensive Leading Camera Manufacturer: “But a dark sky combined with a colorful explosive that’s at it’s most photogenic for about two seconds? For the amateur photographer, it’s impossible to get a good shot!”

Leading Camera Manufacturer: “You’re right…”

Shady Camera Manufacturer Conglomerate That Also Sells Appliances and Frozen Foods: “Well, why don’t we try to develop a fireworks setting to match the snow and pet settings we rolled out…”

More Expensive Leading Camera Manufacturer: “That’s a great idea!”

Shady Camera Manufacturer Conglomerate That Also Sells Appliances and Frozen Foods: “Only let’s make sure it doesn’t work so all the fireworks just look like the outtakes from an acid trip at an EDM festival.”

And so the camera setting became standard on many point and shoot digital cameras.

2015-07-02-1435859522-2681569-1.jpg

I’m no better than any of you. There are a number of fireworks pictures buried in my Facebook photo albums. Every July I promise myself that this will be the year I’ll give up the pursuit of taking one Great fireworks picture, but I keep trying anyway, with marginal success.

2015-07-02-1435859382-9124819-2.png

2015-07-02-1435859424-3748021-3.png

2015-07-02-1435859454-4548607-4.png

But I can see the Great Picture in my mind. The photo is clear and crisp and worthy of a special edition stamp! I would catch one of those huge red, white, and blue asterisks at its fullest in the sky–the kind you can tell by the nnneeeeeeeeeeoow BOOOOM that you’re going to have to crane your neck back to see just how far it stretches into the atmosphere. This sublime could-be photo is the Moby Dick of my summer every year, but the true paradox of my quest is that I am literally the only person in the entire world who cares about taking, seeing, or sharing this picture.

This may be hard for some people to hear, but it needs to be said before we all miss out on reveling in the swell of pride only Kate Perry’s “Firework” can summon at a fireworks display: No one is looking at your fireworks pictures. Maybe your boring family members will, and maybe a few of the people you’re trying to impress with your existence on social media will idly glance at them, but at the end of the day, no one lives for fireworks pictures. People don’t even really like them. They just exist, and we keep adding to the library of useless fireworks pictures every year.

Fireworks pictures are all about the chase. You’re on the ground getting eaten alive by mosquitos sitting between some guy telling his grandson about a war he served in and a nauseating couple watching the entire show in each other’s eyes, and the music picks up and the explosives start firing off faster, and a tiny thought wiggles its way out of a pocket of your brain saying, “Capture this!!!! You need to get this!!! Look at how cool this is!! Don’t you want to keep this to look at this in November???” So you spend the entire fireworks display waiting for the best shot after too many misfires, and by the time its over, you’ve got 37 shaky-handed pictures that look like they could easily be a streetlight captured by a photographer with epilepsy.

Unlike your very best selfies or your enviable vacation pictures, no one is interested in revisiting fireworks photos. When it comes to holidays whose pictures you’re most likely to look at again later in the year, Fourth of July comes last, and it’s not because fireworks are lame; it’s because fireworks are at their best when you see them live. I’m not one to admonish people for wanting to keep a memento of life’s sweetest moments (#picsoritdidnthappen), but in the case of fireworks, it’s really best to put the camera down and just enjoy the show.

A random picture of fireworks won’t conjure memories of that awful Murphy’s Law feeling when you unwittingly sit behind a tree that blocks your view. It also can’t portray the surprise you feel when some tough guy sitting next to you wells up in tears staring at the sky. A misfired picture can’t trap the solemn magic of celebrating something with friends, family, and strangers, all with their eyes lit up in wonder over something so simple.

There’s a time and a place for fireworks pictures, but unless you’re at Disney World getting Cinderella’s castle in the background, know that fireworks pictures — much like photos of food and your open laptop — are the kind of thing people will see once and never look at again. Don’t let getting the perfect fireworks pictures make you feel like a plastic bag drifting through the wind, because no one’s looking at your fireworks pictures anyway.

Looking for ‘The Real Thing’? Find Someone Comfortable

Ask him for a date, or let him pursue you? Respond to the text immediately, or let her wait? Tell him you love him, or stay mum until he says it first?

The early days of a relationship are thrilling, but also stressful. That heavenly new-love high can feel pretty precarious, as if one false move could unravel the whole thing.

So, you plot and plan and strategize — discussing every move with a panel of your 12 closest friends. In some ways, that’s part of the fun, but a new book by Washington Post reporter Ellen McCarthy says it’s probably a waste of time.

McCarthy was the Post’s wedding reporter for four years — a gig she landed on the very day she and a former boyfriend broke up. McCarthy thought that covering weddings while heartbroken would be torture, but she discovered that it actually inspired her.

“All of these people — young, rich, poor, plain, beautiful, sophisticated, and simple — they’d all found someone. I was reminded again and again that love happens every day, in all kind of ways, to all kinds of people,” she writes in her terrific new book, The Real Thing: Lessons on Love and Life from a Wedding Reporter’s Notebook.

By investigating real relationships rather than the ones in rom-coms or dating guides, she discovered that a lot of conventional wisdom about romance didn’t jibe with her fieldwork.

For example, we all love a good origin story, those tales of lovers whom fate brought together through snowstorms or missed trains. But McCarthy says that people who meet in less goosebump-inspiring ways, like online dating, are just as likely to have high-quality relationships.

“All of the couples who got together with a little help from technology feel the same sense of fate as couples who met while serving in the Peace Corps mission or while sharing a wall as next-door neighbors,” writes McCarthy, who estimates that 35 to 40 percent of the couples who apply to be featured in her column met online.

McCarthy also discovered that the happiest relationships didn’t require obedience to antiquated dating maxims:

One of the things I’ve heard over and over again from couples describing what was different when they met ‘the One’ was that for the first time, they didn’t feel like they were in the middle of a romantic chess match. There was no guessing whether or not the other person was interested. They didn’t worry about ‘the rules’ on how long to wait before calling or setting up the next date. The whole thing felt relaxed and transparent, not fraught with the typical ‘Does he or she like me?’ anxiety.

In fact, McCarthy often stumped college classes when she asked them to guess the most common word she heard when couples described their relationships. It wasn’t “love,” “laughter” or “chemistry” — it was “comfortable,” a word 70 to 80 percent of her couples used.

The students thought this sounded like a drag, but I think it’s great news. “Comfortable” doesn’t mean you aren’t also counting down the seconds until you can see your beloved again. It just means that when you find the right fit, you probably won’t have to stress about the precise wording of your latest text — or spend much time decoding his or hers. If he says he’s going to be late because he got stuck in a meeting at work, that means he’s going to be late because he got stuck in a meeting at work.

In other words, winning someone’s heart doesn’t require employing a lot of complicated schemes. You’re more likely to find lifelong love by listening to your instincts and sticking with what works. That might be bad news for those who earn their living peddling strategies and tricks, but it’s great news for everyone else.

DKNY Could Be Looking for a New Creative Director

DKNY CREATIVE HEAD: Could DKNY be looking for a new creative director? Industry sources say a search is on for a person to head the design team at the label, which is owned by LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton. Caroline Brown, chief executive officer of Donna Karan International, is said to be tapping into the young designer market to come up with a candidate for the role. Public School, Prabal Gurung and Andrea Lieberman, designer of A.L.C., are among the names that have been bandied about. Lieberman had no comment, as did Gurung and a spokeswoman for DKI. Asked whether he was considering the position, Maxwell Osborne, design partners with Dao-Yi Chow in Public School, said, “not at this moment,” adding that they have enough going on with their own line. Jane Chung is the longtime executive vice president of design at DKNY.
