The Agent Who Discovered J.K. Rowling Explains Why Her Stories Are Magical

More so than a collection of stories, the “Harry Potter” series can be characterized by its most devoted fans as a hobby, or a lifestyle. The increasingly voluminous installments were hefty enough to get lost in, and they managed to create not only a convincing world, but lovable characters, too.

It’s hard to imagine a world in which the books (and films, and video games, and personality quizzes) might not have been published. But, according to J.K. Rowling’s first agent Christopher Little, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was not an easy sell.

Little told HuffPost over email that Rowling selected him as her agent in part due to his name, which she liked. He was, in turn, enamored of her story, believing after reading it that it was ready to be sent out to publishers, requiring few big changes. (The rules of Quidditch, however, were altered.)

Below, Little describes the experience of trying to sell a book he believed in ― in spite of publishers’ protestations that it was too long or too “exclusive.”

When Rowling first found an agent, he compared her world-building talent to Tolkien’s.

“When I received the submission from Joanne (as she was known at the time) Rowling, it just came in as an unsolicited submission (of the first three chapters) and was picked up by our then office manager who was looking through the slush pile,” he said. “She liked it and bought it to my attention. Once I read it, I had no reservations whatsoever and in fact felt very excited about it.

“It was clearly presented as a fully realized world […] I don’t think I recall reading anything so immersive since The Lord of the Rings many years earlier. We quickly wrote back to Jo asking to see the rest of the manuscript as soon as I had finished those initial chapters.”

Rowling chose to write under the name “J.K.” in order to appeal to young boy readers.

“The suggestion to use initials instead of J.K. Rowling’s given name, Joanne, came from discussion with Bloomsbury. It’s notoriously harder to get boys to read in comparison with girls, as many parents will know, and an author being obviously female was more likely to be off-putting to boys. Joanne selected the ‘K’ after her paternal grandmother.”

Rowling only made a few changes before sending it out to publishers.

“There were very minor differences in the full manuscript that was received and that which was sent to the publishers — I do recall that the Quidditch rules were tweaked a bit!”

The book was rejected over and over again before it found a home.

“Over a period of nigh on a year, the book was turned down by more or less every major publishing house in the U.K. Various reasons were given including the story being too long, the fact that a story set in a children’s boarding school might feel too ‘exclusive’ to many readers, etc.

“When I first spoke to Barry Cunningham, who had at that time recently been hired to run the new children’s department at Bloomsbury Publishing, the book was accepted and an offer was made. He saw the same potential as I did ― perhaps as we both came from a background other than publishing originally, so arguably thought slightly less conventionally and considered this well-characterized, unique story as one that clearly should be published despite such considerations.”

From June 1 to 30, HuffPost is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the very first “Harry Potter” book by reminiscing about all things Hogwarts. Accio childhood memories.

Emma Stone’s Most Magical Musical Moments

Is there anything that Emma Stone can’t do? She acts, she dances, and yes, she sings.

But even though everyone fell in love with her charming (and Golden Globe-nominated!) performance in La La Land, Stone has been showing off her musical chops for years, starting with her secret reality show past, to her stint on Broadway, to her performance as a Gaga-esque pop star in Popstar.

Warning: This may make you fall even more in love with her.

EASY A
Stone’s breakthrough leading role gave us a one-two punch of amazing musical performances: First, the hilariously goofy ode to Natasha Bedingfield’s iconic earworm, “Pocketful of Sunshine,” which basically confirmed that deep down, Stone is all of us. Bad shower dancing including.

And then there was the film’s climatic performance of “Knock On Wood,” where our adoration for her moved from “Oh my god, we’re basically the same person” to “We definitely want to be her when we grow up.” (And as a bonus for any Gossip Girl fans, this performance even had a shirtless, blue Penn Badgley, so it was basically unforgettable.)

THE “LES JEUNES DE PARIS” SKETCH ON SNLCan anyone make goofy dancing look as stylish and cool as Stone and Taran Killam? Frankly, we wouldn’t be surprised if her choreography in this sketch was one of the reasons that she got cast in La La Land.

POPSTAR: NEVER STOP NEVER STOPPINGIn a film filled with amazing, unexpected cameos, there was perhaps none as amazing and unexpected as Stone, who popped up to play pop superstar Claudia Cantrell, the avant-garde singer behind “Turn Up the Beef,” which led to Connor4Real’s (Andy Samberg) breakout “catchphrase verse.” Honestly, just watch the movie, and join us in hoping that she brings that blonde, double bun hairstyle to the red carpet.

CABARETStone won rave reviews for her Broadway debut, as Sally Bowles in the 2014 revival of Cabaret — and, after director Damien Chazelle took in a performance, won her the lead in La La Land — thanks to her gorgeous, bittersweet performance.

IN SEARCH OF THE PARTRIDGE FAMILYBack in 2004, VH1 launched a reality competition to cast for a reboot of the 1970s classic The Partridge Family and a then-brunette Emily Stone hit the stage week after week to ultimately win the role of Laura. Though the resulting pilot never aired, the experience did provide us with some truly incredible footage of a teenage stone singing Meredith Brook’s “Bitch” in some iconic early aughts low-rise jeans. And you know what? We’re into it.

HER LIP SYNC BATTLE ON THE TONIGHT SHOWBefore Lip Sync Battle became its own TV juggernaut, it was just a humble game that Jimmy Fallon would play with guests. Then Stone came on the show, and basically blew everyone else out of the water with her pitch-perfect, warp-speed performances of “All I Do Is Win” by DJ Khaled. They didn’t want her to crush it, but she did, because she has the keys.

SINGING “STOP” ON THE RADIO
Emma Stone singing the Spice Girls with Andrew Garfield is all we have ever wanted in this world. Anyone else need a tissue right now?

LA LA LAND
Every single time we watch this clip, we can feel our hearts grow three times their sizes, somewhere between Stone’s dramatic fake swoon over Gosling and when he starts tap dancing on the park bench. By the time the two of them properly kick their number into action, we’re pretty much the human embodiment of the heart-eyes emoji.

Gratitude: The Path to a Meaningful – and Magical – Life

Long after Thanksgiving is over, two things endure – the feeling that I couldn’t possibly eat another piece of turkey…and, more importantly, a deep sense of gratitude.

It will come as no surprise, then, to learn that I recently picked up a book called GRATITUDE by Oliver Sacks. It’s a quartet of essays that he wrote in the last two years of his life. Despite his struggles battling cancer, he chose to highlight his immense gratitude – something he felt not only through that ordeal, but through his entire life.

Here’s what he says about the gifts of old age:

One has had a long experience of life, not only one’s own life, but others’ too. One has seen triumphs and tragedies, booms and busts, revolutions and wars, great achievements and deep ambiguities… One is more conscious of transience and, perhaps, of beauty.

And he concludes:

I do not think of old age as an ever-grimmer time that one must somehow endure and make the best of, but as a time…freed from the urgencies of earlier days, free to explore whatever I wish, and to bind the thoughts and feelings of a lifetime together.

As you gather with loved ones this holiday season, I invite you to allow gratitude to fill your spirit and lead you into the New Year. How? Let Merlin guide you.

While Merlin is beloved around the world as a legendary wizard, the Merlin I’ve written many books about is also a real human being. He has struggles, sorrows, joys, and aspirations – and, hidden deep within him, a remarkable gift. In that way, Merlin is no different from all of us: he is burdened by the human experience, while at the very same time exalted by it.

All of us have hidden struggles – and hidden potential. And all of us, like the great wizard Merlin, have something special within us. No matter how many obstacles we face, we still have the ability to reach for the stars. We can strive, create, love, hope, sing, be kind, and work to build a better world.

Recently, I wrote a book about Merlin’s seven most magical words, THE WISDOM OF MERLIN: 7 Magical Words for a Meaningful Life. I purposely chose Gratitude to be the first of those words. Here’s a passage that explains why:

Gratitude is a good place to begin to make a meaningful life. To be wholly alive is to be grateful–for every breath we take, every song we sing, every person we love, every day we discover.

All we have–truly all we have–is our time and our souls. Even if you live as long as a wizard, that time is really very brief. It’s never long enough to do all you can do and be all you can be.

Each day, take a moment to love a person, a place, or an idea that touched your heart. Cherish those blessings through all the seasons of a year–and all the seasons of your life.

My favorite place to feel grateful is in nature–under a starry sky in Colorado wilderness, by the vast ocean at the Great Barrier Reef, or in a grove of towering redwoods in California.

Here’s the miracle of such places: With nature’s wonders all around, I feel both very small and very large at once–diminished and humbled by my own insignificance, while also enlarged and inspired by the vast sweep of creation. And both you and I belong to that creation! For we are all made from miracles, no less than the stars themselves.

One of humanity’s great challenges is to embrace nature without suffocating it–to treat our natural home with appreciation, not exploitation. We have been given the garden planet of the universe–and we can either nurture or devour it, protect or destroy it.

Fortunately, we have one great advantage in facing any challenges: ourselves. We can accomplish anything if we truly devote ourselves to the task.

And that, my friend, is worthy of our gratitude.

This Photo Of Taylor Swift And Emma Watson Is More Magical Than Hogwarts

Baby, now we got Mudblood.

Muggle-born witch Hermione Granger, aka actress Emma Watson, and “Bad Blood” singer Taylor Swift met up for a photo Saturday at the singer’s London show. The snap reportedly happened backstage and was shared by singer Lauren Aquilina, who also appeared in the photo along with Martha Hunt, Karlie Kloss and Echosmith singer Sydney Sierota:

“Harry Potter” actor Tom Felton previously told The Huffington Post that Swift would probably be sorted in Gryffindor, which might explain how Watson and the singer became buds. (They obviously bonded while studying for exams in the common room.)

But Swift also brought Hunt, Kloss, Cara Delevingne, Gigi Hadid, Kendall Jenner and Serena Williams on stage with her during the show, which is so magical that it can only mean one thing:

Taylor Swift isn’t building a “squad”; she’s making Dumbledore’s Army.

Way to go, Taylor. Dumbledore will never be gone! Not as long as those who remain are loyal to him!

Someone Requested All Of The FCC Complaints Against ’30 Rock,’ And They’re Magical

Ain’t no filth like Liz Lemon filth.

Tiny Fey’s “30 Rock” ran for 138 episodes, garnering more than 100 Emmy nominations, but apparently it should’ve been taken off the air far sooner, thank you very much.

The fine people of MuckRock requested every FCC complaint lodged against the sitcom — there were only nine, but some viewers took strong offense to the “crap” broadcast by NBC.

Many people were upset with the show’s language, including moment’s where Fey’s character Liz Lemon “called someone a son of a bitch” and an unidentified actor said, “Kiss my daughter’s ass.” A particularly dismayed viewer was offended by the line “Have you been soaking your tampon in vodka?” and ended their complaint chastising the character Jenna Maroney for “kissing a man dressed as a woman.”

And of course the network sensation “MILF Island” was mentioned by a foul-mouthed complainer: “M-I-L-F is acronym for ‘Mother I’d Like to Fuck’ This is shameful … Where in the WORLD is the decency rules and why are they not being enforced.”

Maybe the network should’ve run with “Queen of Jordan” instead.

Take a full look at all of the complaints below:

Costa Rica Magical Places to Visit

Costa Rica’s incredible biodiversity and variable climate offers a multitude of travel destinations to explore and enjoy. With so much to see, deciding where to go can often be the hardest part of your trip planning process. Often, a good first step is to choose one or two destinations, and then complementary locations can be found based on time constraints, proximity, and interest. Many travelers choose three or four destinations to visit in a 7-10 day period. One of the reasons Costa Rica is such an exciting country to visit is that it affords visitors the opportunity to see multiple locations and habitats on a single vacation.

Lalaine Explains How That Magical ‘Lizzie McGuire’ Reunion Came To Be

Unless you’ve been living under a rock (and that rock doesn’t have Wi-Fi), you’ve probably heard about the recent mini “Lizzie McGuire” reunion with Hilary Duff, Lalaine and Jake Thomas. If you did somehow miss it, just know their spontaneous meetup in a bowling alley was definitely what dreams are made of.

So this happened last night… #LizzieMcGuire

A photo posted by Jake Thomas (@sirjakethomas) on

Recently, Miranda Sanchez (known as Lalaine IRL) spoke with HuffPost Entertainment and explained why that impromptu meeting was totally fate.

Image: Tumblr

So how did this even happen?
I like to bowl. I have my own ball that my dude got me during Christmas, so we’re pretty into it. We started bowling and I swore I thought I heard [Hilary Duff]. Like her voice will never not be recognizable for me. I mean, c’mon, we were like family for how long? And then I looked, and it totally was her. We finally happened to be in the same place after 14 years. It was random and a little bit of fate maybe, so I forced fate’s hand a little bit and I immediately hit up Jake [Thomas] because he’s like less than a mile away from the bowling alley.

Oh cool, so you guys kept in touch?
Yeah, I have actually been very close with most of the people that were on the show. I was just on the phone with Adam [Lamberg] for example, so I just was like, “This is hilarious,” so I hit Jake up, and I was like, “Yo, at Pins. Hilary’s like four lanes down,” and he was like, “Haha! Oh my God! Should I come there?” So he came on over, and then we were like, “Let’s make this even more hilarious and send her a drink.” And we did. She waved to us, and she had no idea who we were because we were pretty far from her and it was dark.

But then she walked over and immediately saw me. As she was walking up, I’m just like, “Really, girl? Really?”… It hit her that it’s me. She turned around and was cracking up, and it didn’t even faze her that Jake was standing right next to me. I was like, “Are you kidding me? Did you not see this thing right by me?” She was like double stumped … It was just fate.

Image: Giphy

Wow, this is amazing. It’s the best Instagram post I’ve ever seen.
Oh for sure, and Jake was just like, “I get dibs on putting this up first,” and I was like, “I don’t care about that, dude.” It’s probably been a couple years less for him, like, maybe it’s been 12 years for him since he’s seen her, but for me it’s been like 14 … I was more on the fact that it was hilarious that all of us were here.

So was Gordo not invited because he hates bowling?
[Laughs] Oh my God! Adam would’ve totally been invited. Gordo may hate bowling, but who knows — after 12 years he might’ve changed his mind.

Might’ve changed his mind. Sure …

22 Terrifying and Magical Capabilities Someone Has When You Fall For Them

Love is terrifying, and terror is love.

How exceptional is falling in love? How breathtakingly incredible? How painful and enchanted it is to have your heart opened. It presents so many chances for overwhelming pain, and also for captivating joy. It’s a double-edged sword that can release your innermost desires and also your deepest fears.

Oh, love. How petrifying and wondrous is the single most infinite component of human life. Here are 22 powers your beloved has when you first fall for them:

  1. They see who you really are. Your insecurities and flaws lie exposed like an open wound.
  2. They want you, regardless. You know that what you see as ugliness is lovable to them. You know you’re perfectly imperfect to them, and few things in life match that comfort.
  3. They can leave you and you know you’ll feel a little lost if they do.
  4. They can stay. They can be there when no one else is.
  5. They can hold you back in life when you focus too much on them.
  6. They can support and push you. They can directly aid in the pursuit of your dreams.
  7. They have expectations for you that you could not be able to meet, and you worry you could become a disappointment.
  8. You could fulfill every hope of theirs and then some. You could be gratifying and refreshing in all that you are.
  9. They could be unfaithful to you and embarrass you.
  10. They’re choosing you and only you. Being with you means they want you. You’re wanted solely and exclusively, which is worth the risk.
  11. They can hurt you.
  12. They can heal you.
  13. They can expose and exploit you.
  14. They can listen to and keep every one of your secrets. They can be your safe home and endless confidant.
  15. They can take you from the people in your life.
  16. They can encourage you to spend time with the people you love, and also introduce you to new and exciting people.
  17. They can painfully reject your opinions and beliefs.
  18. They can open your mind to new perspectives.
  19. They can easily break you down.
  20. They can easily build you up.
  21. Everything could change.
  22. Or, they can change everything.

The ‘Harry Potter’ Cast Had The Most Magical Reunion Ever

We solemnly swear that this is amazing.

Draco Malfoy was hanging out with the Weasleys in West Hollywood recently and decided to share the Hogwarts reunion on Instagram for all us Muggles to see. Ten points to Slytherin for that!

Joining actor Tom Felton in the photo were Rupert Grint, otherwise known as Ron, actress Bonnie Wright, perhaps better known as Ginny, and actor James Phelps, otherwise known as Fred. And something tells us they weren’t drinking butter beers:

Kim K stood me up. Outnumbered by 3 Weasleys. Ugh.

In the caption, Felton also made light of Kim Kardashian’s new look, which has been compared to his in the “Harry Potter” movies. Felton previously told HuffPost Entertainment that Kardashian would be a Slytherin at Hogwarts, so apparently he was spot on. Phelps also shared a reunion photo of his own with a caption reading, “Mini family reunion…and Tom”:

Mini family reunion…and Tom. Great night with the gang

Accio good times, right? Though the group didn’t share many details of what they were up to, we’re guessing it was mischief managed.

How A Midwest Thunderstorm Resulted In Magical Engagement Photos

There are certain moments in our lives — vacations, wedding days, family picnics — when rain is basically the worst thing ever. But once in a while, the rain we dread so much creates a memory we never saw coming.

This was the case for Jeff and Jessica, a young couple who recently planned their engagement shoot in the small town of Kelly, Kan. only to have it interrupted by one of those famous midwest thunderstorms.

Of course the lovebirds and their photographer, from Salt and Pine Photo, decided to turn lemons into lemonade — which resulted in one of the most enchanting engagement photos we’ve ever seen. Here’s their story:

The day started out fine, the couple is all smiles stealing kisses on Jeff’s family farm.

Then, the storm clouds came in, ominously looming overhead.

The rain began to pour down on them — but Jeff and Jessica powered though it.

Their photographer Darryl thought an outfit change might give the rain a chance to stop — and it did for a minute.

But then the rain had other plans and became a full on downpour; Soaking them head to toe.

And this one — all of which would not be possible had they gone inside.

If this engagement shoot is any indication of their marriage, we have a feeling this couple can weather any storm thrown their way.

A Magical Six-Week Life Experiment

I had been busy building a career for 15 years. This was the path I thought I needed to excel in to have a “successful life.” I had been collecting degrees, accolades, promotions. But last year I was feeling stuck and unfulfilled. Maybe success meant something else? I was very good at putting my work subjects through various experiments but I had never taken the time to do that with my own life. So why not design a life experiment to test my life perceptions? All I needed to do was conquer the fear of leaving my job and give myself the permission to change a few life variables.

Inspired by Arianna Huffington’s book Thrive and her journey through redefining success, I decided to leave my job, my home and my packed calendar to visit a different country every week. It was time to put up for review the very well-planned life that I was holding on to so tightly — one that was not bringing me joy. As I went through my life experiment, let’s call it my Thrive sabbatical, I noticed I was experiencing magical changes week by week.

1. I became closer with the world around me. I became more present. Of course, staring less at my cell phone really helped! I observed more, I felt more and I did less “sleep walk” living. Instead of being self-absorbed and always in my head, or on my phone, I chose to travel the world with an open heart for every person and experience I encountered. I found language was not a barrier for the heart and stories to connect. Inspired by the traditional Thai greeting, I found myself taking the time to bow to and recognize the presence of other beings. I felt closer to every life expression. I also never really felt alone.

2. I came to terms with my active mind. Taming your mind is like teaching a child to behave… a hard task. I went on two retreats, and at the beginning of each, I was resisting the experience of calming down. Apparently my mind was not OK with being still. After a few days of Yoga, meditation and silence my chatty mind surrendered to the simplicity of life. And I was happier. I was learning that mastering my own mind was more meaningful than getting another Master’s degree.

3. I stopped feeling time starved. The time famine stopped as I was experiencing the world without a set schedule. As a result, I became more generous with my time. I enjoyed simply being part of someone else’s life for a little bit. I watched the sunset every day. Believing that time was not scarce gave me more freedom and joy. I learned that time famine is something I create and a feeling I control. I can now set better priorities that include time for joy and helping others high on the list.

4. I began to let go more easily. My plans changed a few times — like with the unexpected military coup in Thailand, which affected travel. I also had to let go of my routine, expectations and old thought patterns — like negative feelings from the past. The more I did it, the easier it became. When it rained at the beach, instead of running to find shelter, I chose to stay out and enjoy the water. It actually felt warmer. When I danced with life versus trying to stop the dance, things simply flowed better.

5. I discovered endless lifestyle choices. I met fascinating people with refreshing lifestyles — scuba instructors, teachers in foreign countries, yearlong sabbatical people, athletes, entrepreneurs, etc. This helped me lessen my fear to change things in my own life. It was a permission to redefine what success looks like. I asked myself frequently: “If my main life purpose was simply to thrive, how I would design my life?”

6. I learned that the things that really matter in life are portable. I am not my house, car or job; I am just a human being who is here to experience the world every day as it comes. We don’t really need as much as we think we do. In my case, all that I needed came along with me on this trip. My whole being, which includes my body, my soul and yes, the chatty mind I wanted to calm down is portable. And their well-being is what became most important to me. Success without a peaceful mind, a thriving body and a joyful spirit was not the kind of success I desired any longer.

These are just some of the magical lessons that I learned from simply living differently for six weeks. The benefits of this life experiment still continue: Upon my return, my feeling of being stuck went away; I was fully happy in my heart, mind and body. Strangely enough, letting go also brought me new opportunities, people and ideas that I didn’t expect. Instead of losing my job, I got promoted upon my return.

I am determined to live by these lessons and to pretend I am on a sabbatical every day. I want to be energized and more present. Give my best to others. Make meditation and watching the sunset part of my weekly routine. That is what having a thriving life means to me. And if I ever forget how to do it, I will keep going on sabbaticals to rediscover life’s magic.

What are you waiting for to design your own sabbatical life experiment? I promise it will be magical.

If you need encouragement to go on a sabbatical (yes you can do it!) or have questions tweet me @crogoll.

Magical Memories: The Greatest Royal Photographs of All Time

Magical Memories: The Greatest Royal Photographs of All Time

A fully updated collection of the very best of Arthur’s delightful color pictures and unique stories, including the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, the 2012 Olympics, and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s new baby In terms of royal photography, Arthur Edwards is a legend. For 30 years, he has captured the most poignant and memorable moments in the recent history of the monarchy. His images range from candid shots to intimate portraits to rare moments when protocol is put aside to reveal the true personalities behind. Princess Diana referred to him as “our Arthur” and Prince Charles introduces him to world leaders when they are on royal tours. He has been on hand to capture the blossoming romance and subsequent wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton; he was there to witness happy and loving moments at the start of Charles and Diana’s marriage; he saw Prince William’s first steps; and he was there for Prince Harry’s first day at Eton. As well as having taken momentous pictures, Arthur has fascinating stories to go with them. For example, the time when Patti Palmer-Tomkinson announced to the assembled press that her “Uncle Harry” would be joining her party–and out stepped Prince Charles wearing false glasses, nose, and moustache. Or in Liverpool when a young lad rode up to Princess Diana and asked for a kiss–and she obliged. It was also Arthur who pointed out to Prince Charles during a polo match that his fly was down–having checked with Arthur that nothing was showing, the Prince then carried on playing. This wonderful book is packed with the magical memories of someone who has been present as history and headlines have been made.
