LA Noire Makes Perfect Sense for Switch and VR

Repurposing LA Noire as a $ 30 VR game (called LA Noire: The VR Case Files, exclusively for the HTC Vive for now) is as fun as I’d hoped it would be. And on the Nintendo Switch (priced at $ 50, including all of the DLC ever released), it runs and feels like it belongs, even if it’s Switch-exclusive features – like motion controls and touchscreen functionality – don’t add a lot to the experience. I played both ahead of their imminent launches – November 14 for Switch and December for VR Case files, though remember that the 4K Remastered release is also out on November 14 for Xbox One X and PS4 Pro.

LA Noire looks nice and clean on Nintendo’s newest console when running at 1080p in docked mode. It’s got every piece of content ever released for the detective thriller, and it’s (mostly) slower pace make it a great fit for an on-the-go game in handheld mode. It’s aged reasonably well; the motion-captured facial animations that LA Noire hung its hat on in 2011 have held up best. The rest of the game world shows some last-gen cracks, but nothing I’d knock it for. The most obvious issue was the object pop-in on the horizon when you’re speeding down the streets during driving sections.

Fergie Makes a Sexy Return to the Stage in Rio Following News of Split from Josh Duhamel

Fergie has returned to the music scene with a bang.

After the 42-year-old singer and Josh Duhamel, 44, revealed they have separated following eight years of marriage on Thursday, Fergie took the stage Saturday night to perform at the Rock in Rio Festival in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The former Black Eyed Peas singer sported a risqué black and white ensemble for the concert, featuring a body suit with lace-up details on the sides. Her mismatched over-the-knees boots read Double Dutchess, the name of her visual album due to drop Sept. 22.

Although it’s been 11 years since the release of her solo album The Dutchess, Fergie proved she hasn’t missed a step in her time away from the music scene. She combined her sexy dance moves with her hit songs like “Fergalicious.”

The singer met with a small group of lucky fans on Friday, during which she thanked them for their support following news of her split.

“I want to thank all of you in your different ways. Whether it be helping online with all the naysayers or just helping me with the fashion or just sometimes being there for me when I need to read something that’s filled with love,” Fergie told the fans as seen in footage shared on her Instagram Story.

“Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart. I’m so glad this whole race has been to get here … I thank you so much, everybody, I appreciate you so much. I’m so blessed,” she said in a second video.

On Thursday, Duhamel was spotted out for the first time following the announcement of their separation and was noticeably not wearing his wedding ring.

The actor took a walk through a hiking trail in Brentwood, California, wearing a blue hat, black shirt and jeans.

“With absolute love and respect we decided to separate as a couple earlier this year,” the couple — who share a 4-year-old son, Axl — said in a joint statement. “To give our family the best opportunity to adjust, we wanted to keep this a private matter before sharing it with the public. We are and will always be united in our support of each other and our family.”

How Oprah Learned to Stop and Smell the Roses (Literally) at Her California Home: ‘This Garden Makes Me Present’

There are some old adages Oprah takes very seriously.

“I’ve done many interviews with people who had to lose what they had in order to value what they still have,” she tells Veranda in their September/October 30th Anniversary issue. “Sometimes I stand under the arbor, close my eyes, and allow myself to take in as much as I can: I hear birds splashing in the fountain and literally smell the roses. This garden makes me present.”

RELATED: It’s No Coincidence Oprah’s California Estate is Reminiscent of a Southern Plantation: ‘It’s the Promised Land!’

The TV mogul’s Santa Barbara home overlooking the Pacific Ocean is a world away from her Chicago base. And when she purchased the property in 2001, it’s 42 acres came with a steep learning curve.

“What did I know about a garden?” she says. “I would leave my apartment in the Water Tower in Chicago at 5:30 in the morning and come back at 8:30 at night, when it was dark.” When she found out the plot came with a designated area for a rose garden that was not yet designed, she says, “I thought, Oh boy, what am I going to do with that?”

WATCH THIS: Ellen DeGeneres Lists Her Stunning Santa Barbara Estate For $ 45 Million

As she would in any episode of her beloved show, she turned to the very best expert in the field: Dan Bifano, who’s designed gardens for Barbra Streisand and Tom Ford. Together they picked every bloom, structure and detail of the garden.

“I’m very hands-on,” she says. “I picked the gravel. I picked the grout between the stonework. I decided which way the roses would face. Love is in the details.”

Now, Oprah’s fully stepped into her gardening shoes. She joined a local club called Rose Buddies, and helped develop a new hybrid flower called Legends, in honor of her female African-American heroes.

Katy Perry Says Her Short Hair Makes Her Feel ‘Politically, Mentally, Spiritually, and Sexually Liberated’

Katy Perry, along with a whole slew of other A-list celebs like Kristen Stewart, Zoë Kravitz, and Cara Delevingne, chopped off all her hair in April dyeing it a shade of platinum blonde and giving us some serious Justin Bieber vibes. While she confessed to Ellen DeGeneres that the chop actually started out as an accident, saying, “Sometimes your hair falls out when you go too blonde. So, this is the way I handled it,” it seems that the musician has now grown to love the look, telling W magazine that thanks to her haircut she’s never felt so free.

For her interview with the magazine, Lynn Hirschberg asked the singer if life is more enjoyable now that she’s gotten a close crop to which she responded, “Everything is more fun with short hair!” The pop star continued, “I can just get up and go. I feel so liberated with this hair now. In general, I feel 360-degrees liberated—all around. Whether it’s politically, mentally, spiritually, sexually. I feel liberated from all the things that don’t serve me. I’m surrendering and embracing my 30s. You couldn’t give me anything to go back to my 20s. To get to this place, I had to do some much-needed work on my heart, soul, mind, and body. Since doing that, a lot of beautiful things started to bloom again.”

RELATED PHOTOS: ‘I Feel Very Sexually Empowered’: Katy Perry’s Most Honest Quotes About Love, Sex & Heartbreak

Throughout the interview she also adds that the cut has made her feel “very free” and “I must have loosened up some new chakras.” And she’s not just thrilled with her new look, the singer is also happy to be back on tour, saying, “I feel both very overwhelmed and loved when I’m on tour. People take the time, energy, and money to come see me. That connection is such a beautiful thing. It’s so amazing to see everyone let their guard down and sing one of my songs from the bottom of their lungs—they’ll let go for a second. That’s a brave thing: We just don’t let go anymore.”

And Katy Kats could see their fav on the big screen or Broadway sometime soon as Perry says that while she’s been offered film roles in the past, “it hasn’t been quite right. I really love being the captain of my ship. If I were to do a film, I’d probably have to direct it. I’d love to do a musical! But that will come in time.”

What do you think of Katy’s new do? Do you like her better with short hair or long? Sound off below!

Wannabe Merman Makes A Big Splash On Beaches Of Rio De Janeiro

When Rio de Janeiro resident Davi Moreira goes to Brazil’s famous Ipanema beach, he always has a splashingly good time.

The 22-year-old is a wannabe merman who loves resting on the rocks by the sea as he wears one of five colorful mermaid tails.

“It’s a lifestyle, a way of expressing my love and respect for the sea and this encounter between two worlds. When I’m in the water I feel like another person,” he told Agence France-Presse as he leisured on rocks with his handmade tail glittering in the sun.

Moreira takes his merman passion very “sea-riously.” Besides sporting a “Little Mermaid” tattoo on his body, his home is chock-full of Ariel-themed memorabilia including cups, shirts, dolls and even a bedcover featuring the red-headed mermaid.

Merman Moreira attracts waves of attention from fellow mermaid “afish-cianados,” but also some insults from a few crabs.

“People laugh at me because I am different, but I laugh back because they are all the same,” he said. “I’m not trying to escape reality. I know perfectly well how to deal with adult life. But this makes me happy and I’m not causing anyone any harm.”

Moreira’s lifestyle choice gets approval from at least one slightly envious local, an elderly woman in the video above.

“I think that if I would have had a fancy dress like that when I was a child, it would have been a dream,” she said.

Justin Trudeau Photobombs A Prom Picture, Which Makes Him King

Prom nights often include awkward moments with your date and partying.

But a chance meeting with a head of state while he’s exercising?

Nope, that’s a new one.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau seemed to jog mostly unnoticed by a group of prom revelers in Vancouver, British Columbia, Friday night.

His photographer, Adam Scotti, captured the moment and wrote in a Sunday Instagram post that he’s chronicling the PM’s runs in a small side project and loves watching the reactions of people “as they realise who just ran past.”

It seems the group, at the Stanley Park Seawall, did finally recognize the photobomb-inclined Trudeau. He stopped for a photo with them.

Sure beats a corsage as a souvenir.

Cher Makes Us ‘Believe’ At The Billboard Music Awards

The spirit of the late ‘90s was alive and well at the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday night.

Shortly after Celine Dion sang her 1997 hit “My Heart Will Go On,” Cher killed it onstage with her 1998 No. 1 song “Believe.” She then turned back time to 1989, performing “If I Could Turn Back Time,” in a similar outfit to the one she wore in her legendary music video filmed aboard the USS Missouri.

Everyone was taken with Cher’s performance, even Dion:

After her two powerhouse performances, Cher was presented with the Icon Award by Gwen Stefani.

“So, I’ve wanted to do what I do since I was 4 years old, and I’ve been doing it for 53 years,” Cher said as the crowd broke out in applause. “That’s not an applause thing. I’m 71 yesterday. And I can do a 5-minute plank. OK? Just saying.”

She continued, “I want to thank my mom. When I was really young my mom said, ‘You’re not going to be the smartest, you’re not going to be the prettiest. You’re not going to be the most talented. But you’re going to be special. And then when I met Sonny [Bono], he said the same thing. And there was really nothing about me that lead anyone [else] to believe that I was going to be special.”

Cher wrapped up her speech by crediting a lot of her success to plain old luck.

“I work with people you might not know, but they are like the greatest people in our industry,” she told the crowd. “And I just have to say I think luck has so much to do with my success. I think it was mostly luck and a little bit of something thrown in.”

Ellen Makes ’13 Reasons Why’ Star’s Dream Come True For 21st Birthday

Ellen DeGeneres is in the business of making dreams come true (she brought Oprah Winfrey and Laura Dern together last week, C’MON), so we really shouldn’t be too surprised that she had her own “You get a car” moment with the stars of “13 Reasons Why.”

On Monday’s episode of “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” Katherine Langford and Dylan Minnette stopped by to talk about their new Netflix series, which has attracted a bit of controversy as of late, and somehow one of them ended up walking away with VIP tickets to a Lady Gaga concert.

Let’s rewind here. Langford, who recently celebrated her 21st birthday, is a ride or die Gaga fan, and has even credited the pop star for inspiring her acting career. The actress explained that she knew the show was officially a hit when Gaga herself tweeted about her on social media.

“There was definitely a really big moment for me like a week ago,” Langford said. “I don’t have Twitter, but Lady Gaga tweeted at me, like reposted an interview where I was fangirling and wrote, ‘Katherine,’ with a love heart. And I kind of freaked out a little bit.”

That’s why DeGeneres decided to treat Langford to an upcoming Gaga concert, including a meet and greet with the singer. The “13 Reasons Why” star was immediately brought to tears, grabbing Minnette when DeGeneres broke the news.

“Because you love Lady Gaga, I called her,” the host announced. “You’re going to go see her and go backstage and meet her.”

Sorry, Nicki Minaj. Ellen is still the “DeGeneres queen” after all.

Keira Knightley Makes Surprising Return In New ‘Pirates of the Caribbean 5’ Trailer

You best start believing in ghost stories, Ms. Turner. You’re in another one!

Despite previously denying a return to the new “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies, Keira Knightley is back! The actress makes a shocking appearance in a new international trailer for “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.”

The thing about pirates is they’re fibbers, and Knightley sure proved that. So you know what that means …

The actress reportedly started filming for the first installment of the franchise when she was just 17, so it’s understandable why she’d want to walk away. It’s been around 15 years since then.

Perhaps she still has cursed Aztec gold on her, and that’s what’s keeping her around?

Whatever the reason, the return means Orlando Bloom, Johnny Depp and Knightley are all reuniting in the film. And that probably indicates the script was good enough to get them there. Or, you know, the money was. (They are pirates after all.)

”Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” hits theaters May 26.

Juan Gabriel’s Son Makes His Debut With New Single ‘Sprite’

Luis Alberto Aguilera may very well have music running through his veins as the son of the late legendary Mexican singer Juan Gabriel, but he’s marching to the beat of his own drum in his musical career.

A music video featuring JuanGa’s son recently surfaced on social media, and Aguilar’s his first single titled “Sprite” is an English-language track that is far from the bolero hits and ballads his father wrote and sang before his death in August 2016. Instead, the young singer’s new song leans more towards hip-hop with a music video that gives off major Drake vibes.

A post shared by Luis Alberto Aguilera (@luisxaguilera) on

Aguilera is the son of the iconic “Divo de Juarez” and Guadalupe González, who worked as a maid for the superstar. The mother gave an exclusive interview with Primer Impacto about her relationship with Juan Gabriel last November, shortly after DNA results confirmed that the singer was Aguilar’s father.

“I already knew,” Aguilar told Primer Impacto in a TV interview in September after the DNA results were revealed. “But for me it was important to make it clear so that there is no doubt. I like to speak with the truth.”

For months, Aguilera has expressed interest in pursuing music much like his father, and “Sprite” is his first venture into the industry. Watch the single’s music video above.

Austin Couple Turns Their Love of Ice Cream Into Sweet Success: ‘We Know How Happy It Makes People’

Ice cream has always played a sweet role in Chad Palmatier and Anthony Sobotik’s relationship.

In March 2005, when Chad, 43, introduced his then-new boyfriend Anthony, 35, to his family in Lancaster, Pa., the first thing they all did was head to their favorite ice cream corner shop to celebrate. And Sobotik, a self-taught chef, couldn’t get enough of the homemade treat.

“I was fascinated that they were using local ingredients and it was a family-run shop,” he tells PEOPLE.

Three years later, during a visit to Sobotik’s family home in Austin, the pair wanted to go out for ice cream again — but found only chain shops nearby. “And I was like, ‘Why isn’t anyone opening a shop here that uses local milk and cream and all the ingredients we have in Austin?’ ” recalls Sobotik.

So they did. In 2010, the couple sold their home in Ohio, moved to Austin, Texas, and opened Lock Honest Ice Creams with a mandate to use only wholesome ingredients from local farmers. “We want to support our local dairies and farmers,” Sobotik says. “That’s really important to us.”

With Sobotik dreaming up inventive flavors (Cilantro Lime, Texas Sheet Cake and Dewberry Corn Cobler), and Palmatier, a former store designer for Victoria’s Secret, focusing on branding, they’ve learned that starting a business with your partner can take a toll.

“The first year was so stressful,” says Palmatier. “Creating something together is all-consuming, and we were both just exhausted. But we’ve weathered every storm, it’s made us stronger as a couple.”

Three stores later (and a fourth opening this spring), it all comes back to the simple art of scooping. “We make a product that brings joy to people,” says Sobotik. “We know how happy it makes people.” And, of course, themselves. Adds Palmatier, “Anthony will still polish off a pint every now and then!”

Gwyneth Paltrow Miraculously Makes A Ruffled Blue Suit Look Good

You know what they say, Gwyneth Paltrow: If you can’t prove your site’s widely refuted health claims, just throw on a power suit and keep moving.

Paltrow looked undeniably adorable out in Los Angeles Tuesday. Wearing a baby blue ruffled, short-skirted suit with large metal buttons, fishnet stockings and heeled booties, the almighty queen of Goopland made it work despite the fact that her look is a bit mismatched from top to bottom.

We’re not sure if it’s the fit, the color, the style or the fact that she might be carrying a jade egg in her vagina that especially attracts us to this look, but something is working.

This Mandy Moore Shower Mosaic In NYC Apartment Makes Us Feel Things

Few could argue the genius that is Mandy Moore. She made a seamless transition from pop starlet to film star to TV icon and, most recently, she’s been seen in a shower in Queens, New York.

Twitter user @walkerkaplan tweeted a fantastic text exchange with a friend of his wherein they discuss how another friend had purchased an apartment in Queens with a fascinating mosaic:

Yes, that is in fact Mandy Moore in a bikini on a shower wall.

The Twitter user confirmed to New York Magazine that the photo of this “Candy”-era Moore is “legit as far as he knows.”

Other Twitter users sent in their own mosaic findings and, while great in their own right, they still pale in comparison to the glory that is Moore.

The world is beautiful and weird and Mandy Moore is a queen.

Woman Hacks Her Fridge To Dispense Wine, Makes 2016 Great Again

It’s been a rough year. Let’s wine whine about it.

When British blogger Clare Potts recently moved into a new home, she found herself with both a new refrigerator and some wine that needed storing. One genius hack later, she tweeted what may be the greatest invention of 2016, if not ever:

Potts simply filled her fridge’s water cooler with wine and let it flow from the door dispenser as normal. Anyone with a similar system can do it, but Potts recommends washing the cooler to prevent clogging if you choose to fill it with water again afterward.

“We’ve only had the fridge for a few days so we haven’t felt the effects yet,” she told HuffPost. “I’m sure it will come in very useful over Christmas and New Years!”

Oh, what a fabulous holiday season it will be with this invention. Cheers!

Lego Donald Trump Makes Christmas Anything But Great Again

This Lego Donald Trump will permanently be on the naughty list.

The plastic version of the president-elect seizes control of the North Pole just two days after his inauguration, in Alisha Brophy and Scott Miles’ latest stop-motion animated video.

And as Santa Claus, he immediately sets to work in reshaping the holidays to be exactly how he wants them ― after a little help from Russian President Vladimir Putin.

What follows is a perfect parody referencing some of Trump’s most controversial moments of the past year.

There are references to Trump’s spat with the cast of the “Hamilton” musical and his ejection of a baby from a campaign rally.

The clever clip also mentions Trump’s disgusting comments about women.

“When you’re Santa, you can do whatever. Grab ’em by the antlers,” says “Santa” Trump.

He even calls “for a total ban on Gingerbread men,” in reference to his campaign vow to bar Muslims from entering the U.S.

Check out the full video above.

The Duchess of Cambridge Makes Rare Public Speech

HEALTH CHECK: The Duchess of Cambridge attended a Place2Be Headteacher conference in London and made a rare public speech on the topic of mental health issues.
A royal patron of the Place2Be charity, she spoke to teachers and leaders from schools across England, Scotland and Wales late Wednesday about ways to help children with mental health issues.
“I often get asked why I decided to spend time highlighting the mental health of children,” she said. “I imagine my answer might be similar to many of yours. I know that I was lucky. My parents and teachers provided me with a wonderful and secure childhood where I always knew I was loved, valued and listened to. But of course many children are not so lucky. Since beginning my work in areas like addiction, for example, I have seen time and time again that the roots of poor mental health in adulthood are almost always present in unresolved childhood challenges.”
She wore a gray Matthew Williamson shift dress with a jeweled neckline and cuff, an outfit she had sported in 2012 to a London premiere of “African Cats” for the Tusk Trust Benefit.
Earlier this week, the duchess also attended the 2015 Fostering Excellence Awards in BMA

Traub Capital Makes First Investment in Knot Standard

Traub Capital, the investment arm of Marvin Traub Associates, has made its first deal and it’s for a bespoke men’s wear company.
The firm has purchased a “significant minority stake” in Knot Standard, an online custom men’s suit maker with showrooms in seven cities around the world.
“They were a client of ours a few years ago and we realized they were great people and had a great concept,” said Mortimer Singer, president and chief executive officer of Marvin Traub Associates. “We’ve been watching them grow and succeed and believe we can add the top-spin to help them grow further.”
He declined to provide a figure for the size of the investment.
Singer said investing in Knot Standard is “a new chapter for us. They’re quite cutting-edge in their approach.” He said the company is a prime example of “the intersection between customization in the men’s wear business and e-commerce/omnichannel,” both of which are growing segments of the apparel market.
Singer said that while there are a lot of e-commerce-driven businesses that got their start online, Knot Standard is using the “ability and know-how” it acquired as an online player to “guide them to retail locations.
“They started as a men’s bespoke custom clothing company online and

Video Of A Mole Stuck In A Hole Makes Us Feel Some Type Of Way

Holey moley is right!

A tiny mole seeking sweet, sweet above-ground freedom was almost denied that liberty when it got stuck between two slabs of pavement.

The mole, reportedly Dutch, was recently filmed by a woman walking her dog in the city of Gorinchem, Holland. The footage shows the tiny subterranean animal throwing its paws in the air as it struggles emerge from the ground.

But don’t fret — the little dude wasn’t stuck there for long. The mole eventually broke free from the concrete and scampered into a nearby bush, according to Yahoo UK. Score one for the moles, yet again.

Anyway, this is what a mole looks like up close, for those who are interested (Note: NOT the same mole that was stuck in the hole):

And here’s another mole cheezin’ for the camera, because why not:

(Again, not the same mole that was stuck in the hole):

The Dress Shoe Makes a Comeback

The sneaker has been at the top of the footwear heap for so long now, is it any surprise the dress shoe is ready for a renaissance? They may be more comfortable and technologically advanced than their predecessors, but they still scream high net worth, personality and luxury — like a high-end sports car for the foot. Pierre Hardy, Cartujano and Diego Vanassibara were among the names that did it best.
Diego Vanassibara
Vanassibara studied at the prestigious Cordwainers College in London and specializes in taking natural materials, some from his native Brazil and its indigenous tribes, and spinning them into sleek, high-end footwear.
“Craftsmanship can be modern, sexy, fun and exciting,” said the designer, whose latest collection features shoes covered in green cockerel and goose feathers, others that have been laser-engraved with a turtle-shell pattern or adorned with delicate mahogany or rosewood, hand-carved in Indonesia.
Even his slip-on sneakers are unique, made from la cid yers of leather cut to resemble the decorative scarification of some Brazilian tribes.
The shoes are made in Italy and sold at stores including Isetan, Dover Street Market and H Lorenzo. Retail prices range from 590 euros, or $ 650, to 650 euros, or $ 717, for the most elaborate designs.

Misty Copeland Makes Her Broadway Debut

Just one week after becoming the first African-American principal dancer in American Ballet Theatre history, Misty Copeland announced another career milestone — she would make her Broadway debut in the revival of “On The Town” on August 25th.

The 32-year-old dancer may be one of the top ballerinas on the planet, but she’s never publicly sang in her life. With only two weeks of prep and one “put-in” rehearsal, she was scared.

“Stepping into this theater for the first time — I felt nervous and it’s been a long time since I’ve really felt nervous about performing,” Copeland said. “Having one ‘put-in’ rehearsal with the full cast did not feel like enough before making my debut.”

Watch the video above to see Copeland’s journey through rehearsals until her opening night.

She Makes Movies

Pioneering movie director’s Dorothy Arzner recent death reminds us that still today too few movies are directed or produced by women. It wasn’t until 2009 that the first Oscar for Best Director went to a woman! Match the woman with her accomplishment:

____ 1. Probably best known for her stunning Broadway production of The Lion King.
____ 2. In 2009, the first woman to receive an Academy Award for Best Director.
____ 3. An actress turned director and producer, her movie Awakenings was nominated for a Best Picture Oscar in 1991.
____ 4. The winner of two Oscars, she wrote more than 100 scripts.
____ 5. A pioneering director who co-founded her film company in 1949.

A. Frances Marion
B. Ida Lupino
C. Penny Marshall
D. Julie Taymor
E. Kathryn Bigelow

A screenwriter whose career started as a journalist and an artist, Frances Marion wrote more than 100 scripts. Befriending actress Mary Pickford, Marion directed her first film in 1921. Marion achieved greater success as a screenwriter than as a director, winning two Oscars — one for The Big House and one for The Champ. The latest remake of The Champ, based on her script, was in 1979 starring Jon Voight, Faye Dunaway, and Rich Schroder. Later, Marion taught screenwriting at the university level.

At a time when good roles for women actors were hard to come by and many actresses completed for the roles that were available, Ida Lupino decided that she would direct movies. Pioneering director Lupino co-founded a film company named Emerald Productions. In 1949, she finished directing a movie that she co-wrote, Not Wanted. After writing, directing and producing films in the 1950s, she worked in television, directing episodes in more than 100 shows including The Untouchables, Mission Impossible and The Fugitive.

Penny Marshall made a name for herself as Laverne in the television situation comedy Laverne and Shirley. Turning her hand to directing and producing in 1985, she became the first female director to have a film that grossed $ 100 million at the box office (Big). She then became the first female director with two movies that grossed over $ 100 million at the box office with A League of Her Own. Her film Awakenings was nominated for a Best Picture Oscar in 1991, but did not receive the award.

Probably best known for her Broadway production of The Lion King, Julie Taymor has directed feature films, directed Broadway plays, and developed puppets and masks for productions. The Lion King received eleven Tony Award nominations and won two awards — for Best Director and Costume Designer. Her films include Frida and Across the Universe.

The first woman to receive an Academy Award for Best Director, Kathryn Bigelow has directed short and long films. The 2009 Best Director award was for her work on The Hurt Locker which also won the Academy Award for Best Picture. Bigelow was inspired by her father, who liked to draw cartoons but did not pursue his dream of being a cartoonist. She did follow her dream, studying art, but then intentionally changing her focus to film – to be able to influence more people. Bigelow has worked in television as well as in film.

Learn about more she-roes and celebrate amazing women. These women who make movies are profiled in the book Her Story: A Timeline of the Women Who Changed America. We enjoy the fruits of their hard work and benefit from their significant contributions to our arts and culture.

John Leguizamo Says High School History Makes Latino Students Feel ‘Invisible’

Latino contributions to U.S. history remain largely absent from high school history books, and John Leguizamo is doing something about it.

The 51-year-old actor and comedian sat down with HuffPost Live’s Alyona Minkovski Tuesday to discuss his upcoming film “American Ultra” and his upcoming comedy project “Latin History for Dummies.”

Over the years, Leguizamo has had success with autobiographical one-man shows like “Freak” and “Ghetto Klown,” in which he details his life experiences as a Latino growing up in the U.S. These projects, he told HuffPost Live, arose partly because he felt Latinos were underrepresented in the media.

“It was like, I’m watching TV and I’m watching movies and listening to radio and we’re invisible,” Leguizamo said. “I was like, where are all the Latin people that I hang out with and goof with all day and talk about politics and talk about art?… So I started writing my own stuff, I wanted to see my people the way I saw them.”

On the topic of Latino visibility, the comedian showed particular concern for the absence of Latinos in U.S. history education — despite research that shows Latino students exposed to ethnic studies perform better in school.

“Just imagine, you’re a white kid and all of a sudden everybody’s Latin and everything they’re teaching you is Latin and you don’t hear anything about yourself or about your contributions,” Leguizamo said. “You don’t know hear about George Washington, you don’t hear about Thomas Jefferson and you feel like you haven’t contributed anything. How would you feel? How would you think of your future? How would you think of your participation in American culture?”

“You feel like an invisible person screaming in the woods and nobody hears you,” he added. “And it’s really weird and unfair because we had huge contributions.”

Watch Leguizamo discuss Latino contributions to U.S. history above. And watch the full segment below to hear the actor’s thought on who is to blame for the lack of Latinos in film.

Men’s Wear Makes Strong Showing at African Fashion Weeks

Mercedes-Benz Cape Town Fashion Week bowed last week, the third fashion week in Africa for the month of July alone. Perhaps indicative of the growing popularity of men’s wear in the African market, MBCTFW opened at its new venue at The Watershed along the V&A Waterfront with a show by Goose Homme Prorsum, a new label from young Cape Town designer Snorley McLarean. Other men’s wear designers who showed strong collections during the three-day event included Ruald Rheeder and Adriaan Kuiters.
According to Sizwe Nzimande, group marketing executive of African Fashion International, which owns MBCTFW, “We always look to provide a platform for up-and-coming designers to enhance and drive their careers in fashion.” Goose Homme Prorsum was, along with XIPIXI, one of the two designers who made their debut in Cape Town.
“I wanted to create a collection that would have people at the edge of their seats, and I think I’ve achieved that,” McLarean said. “I am still in shock that I was asked to be the opening event.”
Using fabric he’d been storing since 2010, including a chain-and-rope scarf print reminiscent of Gucci and Hermès that was tailored into a shirt-and-shorts ensemble, the former architecture student-turned-fashion designer explained that he was

10 Ways Gratitude Makes Your Life Better

It’s no accident that all of the major world religions employ some form of gratitude in their rituals. It’s simply because it makes our daily life better, even if you’re not religious nor spiritual.

Gratitude is the feeling of being thankful and showing appreciation for what is in our lives. And thankfulness and appreciation are a pathway to a life of happiness and well-being. When you pause and recognize all of the wonderful things in your life, you feel happier. Appreciation keeps us focused on what is already good in our lives, and opens up the doorway to more goodness to flow into our lives. Gratitude also equips us to handle setbacks and failures in a more resilient way. Science is producing mounting research that our lives are much better when we practice gratitude.

And indeed, gratitude does make your life better in the following ways…

1. You Feel More Satisfied
Not completely happy with your life? Gratitude is a lasting feeling that sustains you longer than other fleeting sensations. Grateful people are more satisfied with their lives because they focus more on what they do appreciate in their life. When you practice gratitude, you take time to appreciate the things that you’re thankful for in your life. And this means that you won’t be longing as much for what’s missing in your life, because you won’t pay as much attention to it.

2. You Motivate Others
When you say “thank you” to someone, they feel that you appreciate what you did for them, even if just a little bit. Saying “thank you” is therefore a powerful motivator for others to keep helping you again, because you are rewarding them with your appreciation. Have you ever noticed how it feels when someone doesn’t appreciate what you did for them? It makes you not want to help them again in the future because they don’t appreciate it. Small thank you’s go a long way, whether it’s a simple text message or a thoughtful email, you can never show someone enough gratitude.

3. You’re Happier
Grateful people are happier. They’re more in tune with what’s going well in their lives and focus more on the positive. When you actually count your blessings (I’m grateful for today’s beautiful weather, for my new shoes, for my close friends, etc) it puts you in a positive and uplifting mood. It’s very enjoyable to recognize the things that you might have been taking for granted, and to feel joy for having them in your life.

4. You’re More Resilient
Throughout your life you’ll experience many setbacks and failures. So having good coping skills is vital for us to have a thriving and successful life. When life knocks you down yet you still practice gratitude, you can humbly appreciate the temporary defeat as a learning lesson. When you’re faced with challenges, you can thank God or the Universe for giving you an opportunity to practice your patience and strength. When you’re grateful you focus more on the opportunities that failures give you, rather than its negative consequences.

5. You Deepen Your Social Ties
Gratitude has the power to deepen your social bonds and connections with others. When you live in a state of gratitude, you have better relationships with your peers. It also enhances your ability to form and nurture relationships, as your friends and family members experience the positive vibes of your appreciation for them and for life. Your energy changes when you’re grateful, and you go from being a “downer” to being a positive person. And this is very attractive to everyone else around and strengthens your relationships.

6. You Have Better Health
Gratitude has been linked to better physical health, as well as better sleep and reduced stress levels. You can live a much better life when you’re grateful because as you improve your relationship to the world, you feel better within your body. Grateful people take better care of themselves as they appreciate their health more.

7. You Increase Your Self-control
As David DeSteno says, “When you’re faced with a challenging temptation in the moment, rather than solely trying to exert willpower, simply stopping and thinking of something you’re grateful for should enhance your ability to make a wiser decision.” As life coach Peter Lambert says, gratitude gives you more patience and makes you less selfish.

8. Your Relationships Improves
When you’re more grateful and generous to the people who you care most about, your relationships improve. Not only will they feel more appreciated by you, but when they feel more appreciated and cared for, they’ll reflect positive feelings back towards you. As opposed to taking each other for granted, when you truly appreciate your significant other, your relationship becomes more magical again.

9. You’re Less Materialistic
When you appreciate what you already have, you realize that a bigger house or a new car are not the things that will really make you happier deep down. In fact, material things can actually feel sort of empty and meaningless. But when you’re thankful that you have a roof over your head and plenty of food to eat — something not everyone around the world has — you won’t be as tied to physical things anymore.

10. You Enrich Your Children
Research has shown that when you encourage gratitude in children, it has some remarkable effects. It turns out that kids who are grateful are happier, experience less volatile emotions, and feel that life has more meaning to them.

Gratitude is an emotion that’s worth cultivating as it will make your life better. You can start simply, by thinking of five things in your day today that you’re grateful for. There’s no doubt that we all want to be happy, have good relationships, and good health. The only thing you need to do to create more of these good things in your life, is to cultivate the gratitude within you.

Plus-Size Vlogger Doesn’t Care If Her Bikini Body Makes You ‘Uncomfortable’

“Why is it that someone else can dictate that you are not allowed to put something on your body that makes them uncomfortable?”

Such is one of just a few questions worth asking when it comes to what women choose to wear near bodies of water. YouTube star and plus-size fashion vlogger Loey Lane is fed up with nasty comments that degrade plus-size women for wearing bikinis. And she decided to do something about it.

Lane recently posted a video expertly shutting down the body-shamers. She poses important questions like, “Why [should] someone who is larger…have to cover more square inches of their body?” and why fellow beach-goers comfort level has anything to do with what she chooses to wear.

Lane also addresses the common, yet still absurd assumption that bigger women who show off their bodies are asking for feedback on how they look. She says, “Any woman, no matter her size, any man, any human being, they’re not looking for your approval or your praise of what they’re wearing.”

Lane’s bikini body haters have no right to tell her — or anyone else — whether or not they should sport a swimsuit. If you have a body and a two-piece, BAM! You’ve got yourself one beach-ready bikini bod.

7 Wedding Gown Shopping Mistakes That Every Bride-to-Be Makes

Shopping for a wedding gown is one of the most exciting experiences you’ll likely have in your life. But, like any crucial task, it’s rife with the possibility of error.

The blunders I’m talking about, however, have little to do with the type of dress you buy (the shape, the style, and so on) and more to do with the overall process, which can be quite overwhelming. (This shopping excursion will be unlike any you’ve had before!)

While some of the following mistakes may sound like they could be avoided simply by having some common sense, I have often found common sense to be in fact the least common of the senses. Especially when you’re in the midst of wedding planning.

Since you already have so much on your mind by the time you’re ready to try on some gowns, here’s my advice for making your shopping experience as smooth as possible–and some insider tips on how to avoid the biggest mistakes brides make while trying to find their dream dresses.

1. Not wearing great undergarments. Certainly, you won’t purchase your wedding undergarments before you’ve chosen a gown, but you do need excellent support for the gowns you’re trying on to look great. (And if you are not sample size, as most women are not, an ill-fit will be exacerbated without them.) A well-fitting strapless bra is often key.

You also will be in and out of the gowns for at least 30 to 60 minutes and in-between you may stand there in nothing but your skivvies. So your undergarments should at least be clean and without tears.

2. Not wearing deodorant. I’m going to be perfectly frank: The excitement of the salon experience could likely cause more “shvitzing” than you typically experience. You don’t want to be nervous about sweating all over the gorgeous gowns. Plus, imagine the person before you trying on the same merchandise and stinking up the dresses you’re trying on. You don’t want to be that person.

3. Not having clean hair. This is another case of courtesy. Typically, you will try on veils with the gowns, but you may even just run into a salon on your lunch break and without a shopping buddy. Remember that every veil you try has been put on by many others and all you can hope for is that they were courteous and had clean hair, too. Pay it forward.

4. Ordering a gown in a projected size. Today, you may be five, ten or even twenty pounds bigger than your “ideal” wedding day weight. Your professional stylist, however, will try to dissuade you from ordering any size other than the size you would fit into today–and you should listen to him or her. A gown can always be altered to fit perfectly. But it will be a disaster if the gown arrives too small.

5. Buying a gown without knowing your anticipated heel height. It is always best to shop with a heel that’s the approximate height of what you will wear on your wedding day–and not just to see the general way a gown falls but for the sake of alterations. You want to make sure that if there is any intricate lace on the hemline, it won’t be compromised.

Often, a lace hem is separate from the actual lace on the skirt and you can request to send “hem lace separately” to avoid costly removal and adjustment in alterations. And, if the designer’s standard “hollow to hem” is too short for you to begin with, it is best to have the heel height right so that even the most experienced stylist doesn’t overlook this extremely critical detail. Human error can happen and it can really be a nightmare to fix later on.

6. Not having a budget in mind. This typically happens because the majority of brides have no idea what things cost, so it’s important to look at gown shopping as a perfect opportunity to educate yourself and ask questions. If you can add to your budget once you’re in the salon, great! But to try on gowns that are over-budget and risk falling in love–only to have to severely compromise later–will leave you feeling dissatisfied.

7. Not knowing the religious standards of the officiant marrying you. Often, we know that if a wedding is to be held in a church or synagogue there may be a dress code to follow. But if the ceremony is to be off-site, it is best to clarify any requirements with your officiant well in advance of the buying trip. This way, you can ask the stylist what ideas he or she might have if the neckline or sleeves on a gown you love are not quite right for your clergy.

Why Sharing Your Struggles Actually Makes You Stronger: A Lesson From Terry Crews

I was coming home after dropping off my daughter at school and heard Terry Crews being interviewed on the radio. I knew he was an actor on Brooklyn Nine Nine, (I have never watched but my hubby and son love it). I knew he was a comedian and the cool Old Spice guy. Other than that I didn’t know much about him.The DJ introduced Terry by listing all of the projects Terry is involved with these days. The DJ asked how he had time to be involved with so many projects.

Terry said, “I am going to be completely honest, I used to be addicted to porn. Addiction takes a lot of time.” He explained that now that he’s not addicted to porn, he has time to do productive and fulfilling things. He went on to talk about all of his failures. He said no one had failed more than him, and that is why he succeeds now. Terry said that people are living way to safe and you can’t be scared of being you. Take risks.

He was so authentic and real. He talked about his addiction to porn almost cost him his marriage. All of this at 8:00 0.a.m on a morning radio station! They kept trying to make jokes about porn addiction and he kept being real. He did not let them make light of it, regardless how hard they tried.

One minute into his interview, I wanted to know everything about him.I was not expecting to hear this kind of raw truth during a morning radio show interview, with a comedian of all people. It was so refreshing! I was instantly drawn to him. I felt better about myself. I have been feeling like a bit of a failure lately. Somehow his truth let me know I was going to be OK, because he was.

You don’t hear many celebrities being honest about their failures, daily challenges or addictions. Reality is a bit skewed these days. Facebook and social media have become a place of posting about your kids amazing accomplishments, your perfectly cooked risotto at the hottest restaurant in town or your latest vacation to a tropical island. It focuses on mostly our accomplishments and how great our lives are. Those things are all great, and there is another side of real life that is not always so shiny and glittery.

On the other hand we can have really hard days, most of us struggle with something. Yet we don’t talk about our struggles or challenges. We don’t share our hardships. That would make us weak. That might push people away. We question — would my friends still love me if they new my inner struggles and weaknesses? You generally don’t see people post, “Just got back from marriage counseling, it was a hard but productive session”. You don’t see mom post a picture of her baby screaming it’s head off a with the caption, “Today I hate being a mom”. We don’t tell the mom at the park, “I screamed at my 3 year old today and I scared myself”.

Even though these are realities, people prefer to only show the happy shiny facade.
We are afraid to share our failures. Why? It seems like we feel if we post about our amazing lives people will be drawn to us and like us more. We will feel validated that we are important and people will love us. Ironically I have found the exact opposite to be true. We need to be real, raw, authentic. People want to connect and we all have baggage, struggles, weaknesses.

I have made a conscious decision over the past year to live and share my authentic life, warts, failures and all. Maybe that feels gutsy but the payoff is worth it to me. I am who I am. Sure I can glamorize the good stuff and brush the bad stuff under the rug, but that’s not real life. Ironically, I have found that when I share my hardships with raising a daughter with bipolar disorder, or how I have been in marriage counseling for 1 ½ years, people lean in. They open up to me about their lives.

I am blown away by how many friends/clients I have that also have bipolar disorder and have never told anyone. They talk to me about their original struggles with it and how they are living awesome productive lives now. They tell me not give up and it will get better. They check in on me. If I didn’t share, I would feel so alone, so isolated. I am supported because I share. I am not alone because I share. It is so freeing when you share your truth and your friends and family still love you. You don’t have to feel like a liar or a failure. You can’t fail when you are you.

I encourage everyone to embrace who you are. Learn from Terry Crews. We don’t need to feel guilt or shame from our failures, we need to embrace them, share them and move on from them. Celebrate the good stuff and don’t be afraid to share your struggles. You will be amazed at the doors it opens and the support it brings.

Science Shows Wearing High Heels Makes Women Stronger (and Weaker)

High heels have been found to make women both stronger and weaker according to a new study published in The International Journal of Clinical Practice. The subjects, women studying to become flight attendants in South Korea, had heels as part of their classroom uniform, a decision made since the job they were training for would also require similar footwear. Scientists found that those enrolled in their second and third years of the program showed greater muscle strength in the area surrounding the ankle than the incoming freshmen. But oddly, the upward trend stopped abruptly when the women in their senior year of the program were examined.

04-bright-yellow-high-heels-plaid-skirt-street-style

Even though those were the women who had logged the most hours in their heels, they showed weakening of the same muscles that were becoming stronger in the sophomore and junior classmates. Senior, junior, and sophomore students were all found to have worse balance than the newbies.

The lead in the study, Hanseo University exercise physiology professor Jee Yong-Seok, explained that the ratio of strength between areas on the sides of the ankle to that in the front and the back was off in the heel-wearing women. Per The New York Times, that messes with stability and balance and leads to weakening of the same muscles that were initially becoming stronger due to the heels. In turn, ankle issues can cause injuries stemming from other muscle groups in the legs, including your hamstrings.

Happily for stiletto-lovers, the docs the Times chatted to didn’t suggest abandoning heels. Rather, they said to incorporate basic exercises like calf raises and heel drops (stand on the back edge of a stair and slowly let your heel lower dip down as far as it can). If you wear heels at the office, there’s also a benefit to be gained from slipping them off when you’re sitting at your desk since the position feet are put in while wearing a pair can affect the muscles, even when immobile.

The attention paid to Bryce Dallas Howard’s Jurassic World high-heel running scenes makes the study especially interesting. Though, to be fair, Howard said she prepped for all her action with a lot of calf raises.

The Rock Makes Toddler Believe She’s The Strongest Little Lady Ever, And It Will Make You Melt

Here’s Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, making us swoon — as per usual.

This past Wednesday, the wrestler-turned-actor shared a short clip on Instagram of a 2-year-old named “Kai” visiting the set of his upcoming movie, “Central Intelligence.” Kai wants to move an airplane all by herself and The Rock — being the awesome guy that he is– pulls it for her while letting her believe she did it on her own.

Story continues below.

Watch as Kai holds on to a rope attached to the plane while Johnson does the grunt work exclaiming, “You’re so strong! Oh my gosh, you’re pulling an airplane!”

After seeing him completely own a “Shake It Off” lip sync and be pretty-much-perfect with fans, we didn’t think it was possible for The Rock to win us over anymore. Wrong again!

‘Avengers’ Strangely Makes More Sense With Bad Lip Reading

With so many things going on in the “Avengers” movies, it’s surprising Ultron just didn’t short-circuit from trying to keep up with the plot. Now, for fans who love the movies — but have no idea what’s going on — the Bad Lip Reading YouTube channel is here to save the day.

In the new video, “Redneck Avengers: Tulsa Nights,” Bad Lip Reading imagines what the Avengers would be like in a country-themed reality show. No, it doesn’t make sense, but quotes about spicy nachos and fancy pajamas sure are a lot easier to keep up with than what the heck is happening with the Tesseract, the Chitauri aliens or just about anything with Thor.

Also, thanks to the first “Avengers” movie, there are a lot of theories about what Loki was really after. This video, however, explains the guy just wants Skittles, cigarettes and some Big League Chew — which actually sounds like a pretty fantastic time.

11 Party Mistakes That Almost Every Host Makes

Maybe it’s your birthday. Maybe your godson is graduating from college. Maybe it’s a Saturday night and your name is Emily Gilmore. Maybe it’s a Thursday night and you’re the Entertainment Chair of your fraternity. But for whatever reason, you’re throwing a party. The invitations have gone out, and you’ve figured out the lighting, decor and music.

But you also need to figure out the food and beverage situation. You’re entering perilous waters, full of rocky shoals and hungry sea monsters. But don’t worry: HuffPost is here. We’ve identified 11 common food-and-drink mistakes that party hosts make all the time. As long as you avoid these snafus, you’ll be just fine. You’ll throw a great party, and all your friends will love you forever, and all your enemies will rue the day they crossed you.

Mistake #1: Not Having Enough Ice

This is the most common mistake party hosts make, which is frustrating because it’s really cheap and easy to rectify and ice is SUPER IMPORTANT. If you have ice, you can make pretty much any simple mixed drink taste good: cold and dilution can make even straight whiskey or tequila palatable. But without ice, you can’t really make any mixed drink taste good. (Except, I suppose, a hot toddy?) The dozen ice cubes that have been collecting dust in your ice trays for a week won’t cut it. When you throw a party, buy some bags of ice. More than you think you’ll need. It’s better to have leftovers — which keep pretty much forever — than to run out halfway through the night.

Mistake #2: Not Having Enough Cups

This is almost as bad as, and even easier to fix than, not having enough ice. But I also understand it: You might think you should buy as many cups as there will be guests, plus maybe 20 percent for people who lose theirs. But the truth is that a good party will be so chaotic that many guests are likely to go through not one or two, but easily three or four cups. So buy a ton! Just be sure to recycle them the next day, or, better yet, wash and reuse them.

Mistake #3: Having Too Low A Ratio Of Mixers-To-Liquor

Here’s a common sight: You walk into a party, you go to the makeshift bar the host has set up on some credenza in their living room, and you see exactly as many bottles of juice or soda as there are bottles of liquor. This is wrong. Those mixers will run out. You should always provide at least three times as much mixer as liquor. Especially because there are bound to be some people who won’t want to drink alcohol, or much alcohol, and will want cups of plain Diet Coke or cranberry juice.

Mistake #4: Serving Drinks That Are Too Fussy

mixologist

This is, in some sense, the inverse of the first three mistakes. It comes from a noble place in the heart of a party host — the desire to serve delicious beverages. But it, too, is a mistake. Fussy drinks take a long time to make, which can create bottlenecks of sobriety at the party, especially if a bunch of guests arrive at the same time. And it forces the host to focus on mixology rather than talking to their guests and having fun. If you’re insistent on serving a fantastic, elaborate drink, make it a punch that you can mix one huge batch of in advance: My favorite is the Original Chatham Artillery Punch. It’s never been anything less than a smash hit when I’ve made it for a group.

Mistake #5: Not Serving Food

You don’t have to feed everyone at your party a full dinner. Certainly not. You don’t have to serve delicious food. (Though it helps.) But if you are serving alcohol, you must provide something to eat. Chips and salsa, olives or a bowl of nuts, at least. Otherwise, people will get wasted far more quickly than you want them to — or, just as bad, they’ll leave when they get peckish.

Mistake #6: Serving Messy Food
messy food

On balance, serving messy food may actually be worse than serving no food. Nothing ruins a party like getting sloppy joe meat all over your nice shirt.

Mistake #7: Serving Clichéd Party Food

You wanna see someone’s eyes roll back all the way into their head? Invite me to a party and serve one of two kinds of food: a grape-and-cheese plate or a crudité platter, the pre-fab kind that comes from Costco. It’s lazy, boring and totally basic. I’d prefer a bowl of Flamin’ Hot Cheetos. This is, I admit, better than no food at all — but only by a hair.

Mistake #8: Putting All The Food And Drink In One Place

A subtle mistake that has consigned countless parties to failure. Here’s why: If you put the beer, the liquor, the Cheetos and the cake all on one table, or, God forbid, in your narrow kitchen, all your guests are going to congregate there. That’s a recipe for heat, discomfort, accidental pushing and early departures. Instead, if you have any space at all, spread the different types of comestibles throughout your home. That way, your guests will be forced to move around the party all night, and thereby be thrust into all sorts of the random encounters that are the lifeblood of a proper party.

Mistake #9: Not Accounting For Dietary Restrictions

gwyneth paltrow

If you have no dietary restrictions whatsoever, it’s easy to be annoyed by them, or even to forget that they exist. But when you’re throwing a party, you have to think about them. Because if you don’t, you run the risk of having multiple people feel uncomfortable, hungry and sad at your party. You should be safe as long as you have options for people who are vegetarian, vegan and/or gluten-free. That’s not particularly difficult: get some wine for the gluten-free people to drink instead of beer, and serve some pita and hummus, or other meatless snack, alongside your platter of prosciutto and foie gras terrine. Easy peasy.

Mistake #10: Not Making The Menu Personal

This one’s a little nebulous, and related to the injunction against clichéd party foods. But the idea is that if you’re throwing a party, it should feel like your party. Not your mom’s party or your friend’s party or a party you saw on Pinterest. Some of this work can and should be done through decor, but food and drink with personal significance can be great too. So if you just moved back to Chicago after spending four years in San Diego, get some craft beer from that great San Diego brewery you toured! Or if you’re known as an obsessive “Breaking Bad” fan, serve some meth-inspired blue drinks! Bake some of your trademark blondies!

Mistake #11: Not Serving Jell-O Shots

jello shots

I’ve saved the most important rule of party-throwing for last: Always serve Jell-O Shots. Preferably in a piñata .

Harry Styles Shows That Being Charitable Is Really ‘What Makes You Beautiful’

Harry Styles can be a pretty amazing guy — and that’s not just because he has fabulous hair.

Though One Direction has been busy performing around the world as part of the “On The Road Again” tour, Styles took time out last week to visit students from the Lalela Project, an organization that provides arts education to at-risk youth in Cape Town, South Africa, according to the group’s Instagram page.

The 21-year-old reportedly just wanted to do some good.

Harry decided to go to the Lalela Project all by himself and he really impressed kids and workers there,” a source told the Sun UK, adding that “Harry could easily have spent extra time at his hotel relaxing but he really wants to give back when the band are traveling the world.”

The source told the Sun that Styles chatted with the students and gave them tickets to the band’s show in the city. While on stage, the singer even wore a Lalela luggage tag during the show, according to the organization’s Facebook page.

Despite his hectic touring life, Styles wanted to pay his dues to initiatives that were helping the people who needed it most, the source said.

“This tour hasn’t been easy for the boys but [Harry] knows their lives are far better than many of their fans’ and kids being helped by projects like this.”

Styles’ visit with the Lalela students was a compassionate move, but the 21-year-old is no stranger to giving back.

Back in 2013, the singer and his bandmate, Liam Payne, participated in a charity date auction, in which fans could bid on an evening out with the two, the Press Association reported. The money from the auction went to go to Trekstock, an organization that supports young people with cancer.

Earlier that year, the band also recorded a cover of Blondie’s “One Way or Another” to support Comic Relief, a charity that works to tackle poverty and social injustice.

Groom Makes Wedding Vows To 3-Year-Old Stepdaughter In Emotional Video

On his wedding day last January, NASCAR driver Brian Scott recited vows to not one, but two of the important ladies in his life: his bride Whitney Kay and her then-3-year-old daughter Brielle.

The couple tied the knot on a snowy day in McCall, Idaho. At one point during the ceremony, Scott bent down so he could be eye-to-eye with Brielle and made a heartfelt promise to love and care for her, no matter what.

“I promise to always hold your hand and skip with you down the street and bring comfort to your life,” he said. “I vow to make you say your prayers before you eat. I promise to read you stories at night and to always tuck you in real tight. I vow to show you how a man should treat a woman in my relationship with your mother. And above all else, I vow to protect you, care for you and love you forever.”

The emotional video — shot by wedding videographer PenWeddings — was posted to YouTube last year, but recently resurfaced and went viral with more than 350,000 views at the time of publication. HuffPost Weddings caught up with Scott on Wednesday and reminisced about that snowy day last year, which he called “emotional and surreal.”

“I always felt like my vows to my wife Whitney would maybe affect me more and I would get more choked up during those, making those promises to her,” he told The Huffington Post. “But I misread that one. It was really when I was reading my vows to Brielle that I got the most choked up. It really all just hits home in that moment — you’re there and dressed up and all the people around. You’re living in the moment. It affects you more than when you write it or plan for it or practice it. You get engulfed by it.”

The Scotts, who live in Charlotte, North Carolina, first met through mutual friends in 2011. In November 2014, they welcomed a baby boy named Joseph. So far, Scott says he’s really enjoying fatherhood.

“Just being there for [the kids] and enjoying family moments together and playing with them and hearing them laugh and seeing them smile — all of those things are so much better than any of the negative aspects people like to bring up about having kids. It’s not baggage — it’s great addition [to my life].”

Bill Maher Makes Yet Another Joke About Bill Cosby

Bill Maher made yet another joke referencing the recent sexual assault allegations against Bill Cosby.

On Friday night’s episode of “Real Time with Bill Maher,” the host mentioned Cosby during a segment about Sarah Palin. While discussing the Republican voices who criticized a recent Palin speech, Maher said, “Sean Hannity asked, ‘Did the teleprompter go down?’ The Washington Examiner questioned whether she should be included in future Republican events. And Bill Cosby said, ‘I wouldn’t drug her with your drink.'”

The host has made jokes about the allegations against Cosby on numerous occasions, including during his monologue for the Nov. 14 episode of “Real Time With Bill Maher.” While discussing Obama’s then-new initiatives, he said: “If you’re a Republican, you see Obama as Bill Cosby sexually assaulting the Constitution.”

Maher also joked about the comedian on the Nov. 21 episode of the show. “It was a bad week for Bill Cosby,” Maher said. “On the plus side, he has lots of pills lying around that can make him forget the whole thing.”

“Real Time with Bill Maher” airs Friday at 10:00 p.m. ET on HBO.

Jon Stewart Says Mike Huckabee’s Gay Marriage Stance ‘Makes No F**king Sense’

Daily Show” host Jon Stewart appears to have a new hobby: tearing apart Mike Huckabee’s hypocrisy.

When the former Arkansas governor and possible 2016 presidential candidate was on the show last month, Stewart went after him for attacking Beyonce’s music but performing with Ted Nugent.

Now Stewart’s tearing apart Huckabee for the bizarre explanation he gave for opposing gay marriage. On Sunday, Huckabee said he can’t evolve on the issue because it’s a biblical matter.

“I can’t just ‘change’ with the ‘times’ if it means deviating from ‘biblical law,'” Stewart said (complete with the air quotes) in summing up Huckabee’s opposition to same-sex marriage. Then he pointed out a few other pieces of “biblical law,” at least two of which might not be as important to Huckabee.

“It’s why Huckabee never mixes fabric in his clothes or trims his beard or sleeps with another man’s slave,” Stewart said. “It would be wrong.”

Huckabee also declared that asking him to accept gay marriage would be like “asking somebody who’s Jewish to start serving bacon-wrapped shrimp in their deli.”

Stewart said that analogy “makes no fucking sense.”

“No one is forcing you to get metaphorically married to the biblical abomination that is this bacon-wrapped shrimp,” Stewart said.

And that led to one of the most unforgettable “Daily Show” interviews yet.

10 Reasons Christmas Makes Me Love My Husband Even More

No, it’s not the presents. It’s all the little things — sweet, goofy, endearing — that make me feel so happy I chose this particular dude to be my partner in doing this whole life and love thing. So here, in no particular order, are the top 10 things that make me love spending the holidays with my husband:

1. He always wants to buy the loneliest Christmas tree on the lot.
Yes, we have a tiny house that is already way too full with three dogs, two kids, a lizard and the messes he and I are really good at making. But that’s not why he always tries to buy the littlest, saddest, most pathetic Christmas tree on the lot. It’s that he likes that tree. He likes the ones with the gaping holes on one side, or only about 10 total branches. This is part of my husband being one of the sweetest guys you’ll ever meet. It’s very Charlie Brown. I guess that makes me Snoopy, but I think that fits.

2. Late-night sales at the toy store make for really fun dates.
My husband loves to shop. More than I do, if we’re being honest. The last few years we’ve taken the opportunity of a big sale that starts at 9:00 p.m. at a big toy store near us to have my mom stay with our sleeping kids so we can go out alone together to be swarmed by other parents and grandparents frantically vying for the newest Lego or Littlest Pet Shop toy.

Sounds awful, I know, but that one day of the year we don’t mind. It’s exciting. We’re in it together. We WILL find that Playmobil pirate ship and we WILL prevail. Then we get tea lattes at Starbucks and drive home thinking about how fun Christmas morning will be.

3. Dressing up for holiday parties.
My daily attire consists of jeans and tee shirts with either boots or flip flops (depending on the time of year) and that pretty much never changes. But when it comes to going to our friends’ holiday parties, I love to shock people by wearing a fancy dress, heels and a face full of make-up.

Similarly, Ivan is a board shorts and tee shirt guy when he’s not at work, so when we show up and he’s in a suit and tie and I’m all fancy, it’s fun to surprise everyone together. And I like showing off my handsome guy.

4. Watching Arthur Christmas with the kids.
If you haven’t seen Arthur Christmas, an incredible animated feature about three generations of men in the Santa Claus family battling it out to become the most important Santa in history, you need to do yourself a favor and watch it immediately. It’s charming, fun, well-written, well-voiced and has awesome details like elves that deliver each present with high-tech gadgets and gears, like they’re out of Mission Impossible. In many ways, it’s a total guy movie, but I promise you’ll tear up (in a good way) at the end.

It’s one of those animated films that our kids have liked for a few years running, even as they get older, and we enjoy it as much as they do.

5. Watching Scrooged without the kids.
This late-80s horror movie-inspired holiday tale is awesome. This year I tried to watch it with the kids because they are getting older and I thought they could handle it.

They could not.

It is terrifying, but I forget that every year because it’s so heartwarming and really happy — and it’s about Christmas.

One thing Ivan and I have always had in common is our love for great TV and movies. So snuggling in bed and watching Scrooged is total bliss for us. Another good holiday movie to watch together is Love Actually.

6. Sneaking around to find the specific weird thing he wants but doesn’t know I know he wants.
That was a confusing sentence, but what I mean is this: There’s always something he wants, maybe he mentions it off-hand or tells his brother, and he doesn’t know I’m paying attention. Then I go on a hunt to find it. Last year I drove 40 miles to get him a pair of bike shoes for his mountain bike. This year… well, you’ll just have to stay tuned… but the hunt is what makes Christmas special.

7. Knowing that he’d rather be inside on the couch with me than getting drunk on New Year’s Eve.
I’m not judging what anyone else does on New Year’s Eve (as long as you’re not driving or being reckless), but I love keeping it mellow, and I’m so glad Ivan feels the same way. Dinner with friends who also have kids, watching the East Coast ball drop at 9:00 p.m., and then snuggling up on the couch alone after the kids go to bed to read or watch TV is my New Year’s dream.

8. Shooting down his intense need to buy more, more, more, and more presents for the kids.
On December 23rd, we assess what we’ve collected for the kids to make sure they’re balanced and every year Ivan declares that it’s just not enough and goes on a campaign to buy even more presents.

This can be annoying, but it’s part of who he is. He’s intensely generous as a person. Combine that with the fact that the man loves to shop, and you have a combustible situation of excess present-buying!

So every year, like clockwork, Ivan says, “I think we need more” and I say, “I think what we have is fine” and then he usually buys more, but not as many as he would have if left to his own devices.

9. Playing Santa after the kids go to bed on Christmas Eve.
What’s more special than sneaking around wrapping gifts, stuffing stockings and hanging candy canes on the tree? Nothing. It’s one of the greatest gifts that comes with being a parent, if you’re from a family that celebrates Christmas, and it doesn’t last forever. Kids are only little for a short window of time, so you know you’re part of something sacred and rare when it’s happening. On top of that, we always do a lot of cooking for Christmas Eve dinner, and there’s always a lot of good food to nibble at while we prepare.

10. Christmas Day hike or bike ride.
Our family tradition is to make everyone leave their chocolate comas and piles of toys and go for a Christmas Day hike or bike ride. The reason this makes me even more crazy about my husband is that not everyone would go along with these types of shenanigans on a major holiday, but this is the sort of thing we love. Our hot dates alone are usually on our mountain bikes or in the ocean, so it makes sense that on the best day of the year for our family, we’d all be outside.

It’s amazing how much you grow with someone you’re with for a long time. When we first met, our weird traditions and cultural histories collided. We didn’t know how much money to spend, things felt unbalanced, or one side of the family felt neglected. At times we both tried to appease one another and ended up resentful. Holidays can be really tough for couples, and we are no exception. But over time, with compromise and friendship, we’ve evolved a set of holiday traditions that feel uniquely “us” and that remind us how lucky we are to have one another.

Pain Makes You Beautiful

Raff discovers his next door neighbor is suffering abuse at the hands of her boyfriend and decides to put a stop to it. Upon confronting the issue he discovers that the tiny Jenee is a masochist who has her boyfriend under her thumb; she loves the spankings and whippings Tommy gives her. As unsettling as all of this is, what’s more disturbing to Raff is that he enjoys Jenee’s games as well. And Jenee wants to suck his fiancée into her red-hot web of torment…This is an 11,000 word novelette intended for adult audiences. Content warning: This story features graphic sex, BDSM situations, spankings and whippings, and other strong depictions of adult sexuality. Explicit language and adult only content. Excerpt:”Did you have to show him everything?”It’s not like he doesn’t know it exists,” Jenee replied. Inside the room was a closed wooden cabinet, a padded bench that had several leather restrained attached to the wooden frame, a large and heavy wooden X-cross bolted to one wall also with leather restraints. Leaning in one corner was what looked like a wooden stockade that Puritans used on lawbreakers. One wall sported a large number of hooks from which hung a variety of whips, switches, paddles, and other devices of torture. Raff wasn’t stupid. He knew exactly what he was looking at. To see it all in one place at one time was jarring in the mundane setting of a suburban home.”We’re pretty serious about our sex games,” Jenee said.

First Nighter: Sharyn Rothstein’s “By the Water” Makes Strong Waves

Not that this’ll ease those still suffering the devastating Hurricane Sandy effects, but it turns out the monstrously ill 2012 wind has blown a bit of good. By the Water, Sharyn Rothstein’s drama at Manhattan Theatre Club’s Studio at Stage II, is about a Staten Island family having immense difficulty overcoming the damage to their waterfront home. It’s a first-rate play receiving a first-rate production.

Mary Murphy (Deirdre O’Connell) and Marty Murphy (Vyto Ruginis) are devoted to each other and are also devoted to a house that has little more than the frames left standing. They intend to remain and rebuild when many neighbors are strongly tempted to take the government buy-outs offered.

Older son Sal (Quincy Dunn-Baker), who long since married business woman Jenny (never seen) and left Staten Island behind to his dad’s unabated resentment, is concerned about the decision and arrives to talk them out of it–not a likely prospect, given Marty’s inflexibility. Sal has also prevailed for support on younger brother Brian (Tom Pelphrey), only recently out of a 29-nine-month prison term for burglary.

Also visiting the forbidding confines from time to time are the Murphys’ best friends, Andrea Carter (Charlotte Maier) and Phil Carter (Ethan Phillips). They’re among those looking to move away–in their case, to Montclair, New Jersey–and would like to convince their pals that’s the thing to do. The Murphys and the Carters remained close despite the bad time Brian gave the Carters’ divorced daughter Emily Mancini (Cassie Becks) during an earlier relationship. It’s a complication that intensifies when Brian and Cassie cross paths again in the compromised dunes.

Playwright Rothstein establishes Marty as the seemingly insurmountable obstacle. He’s a man maintaining the importance of community preservation and is particularly adamant about his intentions as a result of refusing to recognize Sal’s point of view. Part of the grudge he holds is due to Sal’s participation in Brian’s arrest.

Favoring Brian, Marty fights Sal with venom and even turns on the Carters when they persist in arguing for a Montclair-like move at the same time as they oppose his anti-government petition and poster campaign.

Dysfunctional-family plays rarely end without secrets coming to light. By the Water is no exception. (Mild spoiler alert here.) It turns out that Marty has his, which, as they surface, compromise his bombastic stance and render him far less persuasive to those around him. Sal has his secrets, too, but they’re a good deal more positive and concern his and Jenny’s decisions about how to help the older Murphys. As Brian and Emily revive a romance, their big secret is open but not necessarily thrilling to Andrea.

On Wilson Chin’s scattered, cluttered set, Rothstein’s fiery confrontations never stop igniting. Characters are allied with each other at moments and are in conflict within immediately following moments. Every twist, every about face is disturbingly realistic.

Rothstein gets the combative father-son feel right, down to the Oedipal undercurrents. She also does well with depicting the complexities of long-term friendships. She lays bare what has bonded the Murphys and the Carters over 30-plus years. She’s adroit at exposing what they’ve chosen to admire or dismiss in each other–the inclinations they’ve opted to focus on while overlooking others.

Before she reaches her bittersweet ending, she’s examined a strong marriage that’s greatly tested as well as she’s probed deeply into fractious parent-child relationships. What she’s wise about demonstrating is the multi-faceted nature of honest familial and friendly love. Not an easy achievement but one she attains.

This season is shaping up as strong on ensemble playing. The By the Water cast, as directed muscularly by Hal Brooks, fits right in. The beefy Ruginis, whose mere presence is intimidating, runs emotion’s gamut as if he’s doing a 26-mile marathon and ending it panting but unbowed.

Dunn-Baker, also physically imposing, brings out a good man’s frustration at only wanting to help when it’s the last thing wanted of him. He hints nicely at Sal’s hidden worries about a marriage foundering as a result of his being pulled between parents and wife. Pelphrey’s Brian is a contrite fellow uneasily finding his footing.

Maier and Phillips as the devoted but challenged Carters also convey their confused feelings. Frustration gets a workout on all sides, and Maier and Phillips depict it especially well. As Emily is pulled into a love affair she considered long over and dispensed with, Beck handily plays the hardened thirtysomething woman tempted to soften.

As for O’Connell, here are a few special words. She could be, and should be, tagged a First Lady of Off-Broadway–along with others like Kathleen Chalfant and Marin Ireland. More often than not, she’s called on to portray a lower-class woman in distress but battling it with every fiber in her small frame.

If O’Connell has ever played someone whose hair is immaculately combed, I’ve missed it. I haven’t, however, missed her ability to be thoroughly natural in any situation a script presents her. My guess is I’m not alone in relaxing when, on opening a program, I see her name in the cast list.

Incidentally, at the back of the program, thanks go out to Derek Tobacco at non-profit Guyon Rescue for leading a tour the cast took of ravaged Fox Beach. It’s difficult to think that the images the actors retained aren’t informing the effective playing.

If anyone reading this review is thinking of the play’s similarity to Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman, there’s no reason to hang his or her head. The focus on an overbearing father with two sons and a wife defending him despite his failings is undeniably in the Miller mood and mode.

As Linda Loman said then, “Attention must be paid,” and as Mary Murphy could say now, “Attention must be paid.” They’re both right.

New ‘Broad City’ Trailer Makes This The Best Day Of Our Lives

It’s been far too long since the first season of “Broad City” ended (we know, it’s been tough), but Ilana and Abbi are back with lots of panache.

The first full trailer for Season 2 of the Comedy Central series is loaded with twerking, “white power suits” and “titty chips.” What else can we expect from our favorite female comedy duo? Besides the usual wake and bake, Abbi will get to teach a fitness class, Ilana will do some dressing room grooming, and together they’ll attempt to sell (what appears to be) art on the streets of New York City. Oh, and Seth Rogen and Kimiko Glenn, from “Orange Is the New Black,” will appear for cameos.

Watch the trailer, which will make you feel like Ilana at her grandmother’s shiva, and rejoice at the impending return of Ilana and Abbi!

Jorge Garcia Makes The Most Of ‘Hawaii Five-O’

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Since playing the lucky-unlucky lottery winner Hurley on “Lost,” Jorge Garcia’s career has moved along nicely from “Alcatraz” to “Hawaii Five-0” and upcoming big-screen movies.

It’s logical that he might indulge himself in, say, a fast car or pricey wristwatch. But to think that is to badly misjudge the man and, if you happen to see him decked out on Halloween night, you’ll understand why. “Oh, man, do I admit this?” Garcia said. “I always wanted to have an Elvis jumpsuit made and always found reasons not to do it. But getting the job on ‘Five-0,’ I said, ‘OK, I’m doing it.'”

Specifically a $ 3,700 “Dragon” jumpsuit — a white version with colorful dragons embroidered front and back — from a costume design company that also offers, among many others, the Burning Love and Aloha from Hawaii versions for Elvis impersonators and admirers like Garcia.

If the custom-tailored suit arrives before Halloween he’s definitely wearing it, said Garcia, 41, a fan of the holiday as demonstrated by his Instagram postings. It would also be a nice way to mark Friday’s episode of “Hawaii Five-0,” in which his character, Jerry Ortega, has a featured role.

Conspiracy theorist Jerry has been spying on a suspicious bookstore and “it turns out they’re also spying on him,” Garcia said. “Perhaps he poked his nose in where he shouldn’t.”

This season represents Garcia’s move up from recurring guest star to series regular on “Hawaii Five-0,” the revamped version of the 1968-80 police drama. Among the show’s stars is Daniel Dae Kim, who as Jin Kwon was stranded with Garcia on the Hawaii-based “Lost.”

“Half the (production) crew are people I already know” from “Lost,” Garcia said. “When I came back and did the show as a guest star it definitely had this feeling of coming home.”

Paradise is only rented, however. He still has a house in the Los Angeles area, where he can stay on top of job opportunities.

“It’s better to be in the room for certain meetings then do things remotely. You can get a better feel for the personalities,” said Garcia, who comes across as drolly funny but also much more focused than his often free-spirited characters.

Born in Omaha, Nebraska, and raised in Southern California’s Orange County, he found youthful career inspiration in two very different films.

“It was seeing ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ and ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ that made me first want to be an actor. I just loved Tevye so much; I used to sing ‘If I Were a Rich Man’ when I was little,” he recalled.

Was that accompanied by Topol’s exuberant, hip-shaking dance from the 1971 movie?

Of course, Garcia said. “If you’re gonna play it, play it.”

As a fledgling performer, the roles he expected to get were along the lines of the funny neighbor in a three-camera sitcom.

“I knew I wasn’t a usual type,” said the round-faced, bushy-haired Garcia.

His first big role came in the Ted Danson sitcom “Becker” in 2003-04, followed by small roles in other shows and movies. Then came Hugo “Hurley” Reyes in 2004, a welcome chance to play a character with dimension.

He’s adding more movie credits to his resume, including two set for 2015 release: “The Wedding Ringer” starring Kevin Hart and Josh Gad, and “Cooties,” a horror-comedy featuring Elijah Wood, Alison Pill and Rainn Wilson.

As for his distinctive mane, he’s more than ready to part with it (“I’ve had long hair for so long, I need to start feeling like a grown-up”) and step into what he calls “real suit-and-tie guy” roles. He plans a serious trim after “Hawaii Five-0,” with his Elvis Presley suit as added inducement. He and friends are planning an indie film that would include a scene with a couple of Elvis impersonators.

But there will be other uses for his treasured outfit.

“It’s not like I wouldn’t walk around my house in the Elvis suit with a gorilla mask on, just for entertainment,” Garcia said.

Jimmy Fallon Playing The Vanilla Ice Board Game Makes You Stop, Collaborate And Listen

Ice is back with an embarrassing invention.

In Jimmy Fallon’s first installment of his “Do Not Game List,” the “Tonight Show” host introduced us to a bunch of different awful games, but Vanilla Ice Electronic Rap might be the most terribly awesome of them all.

In the game, players are given an electronic beat box and rap different rhyming words that don’t make a lot of sense.

Fallon doesn’t really explain how to win the game, but this might just be one of those cases where there aren’t any winners.

“The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. ET on NBC.

Samsung Makes Butt Robot With Mom Jeans To Prove Its Phones Don’t Bend

It sounds too good to be true, but it’s not: Samsung has created a big, robotic, mom jean-wearing butt to prove its phone doesn’t bend when a person sits on it.

You know, unlike some of its more prominent competitors.

A video posted to Samsung’s official blog Thursday shows the company’s Galaxy Note 4 phone subjected to a number of tests. But the most important question of all is clear: Can a Samsung phone withstand a giant butt sitting on it a couple hundred times?

Samsung could have used a regular old human for the test, or a boring robot. Instead, it created this robotic-powered rump. To warm up, the phone was subjected to your standard “tap it back” style sit down.

As you can see, so far so good. But could the Samsung withstand a full-on Miley Cyrus powered twerking session?

OK, so maybe it’s not quite that fast in the video. Still, we’re pretty impressed.

Watch the full video, appropriately titled “Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Endures the Gluteus Maximus,” below to see more of Samsung’s test:

This Kids’ Movie Makes ‘Transformers’ Look Like Child’s Play

“It definitely feels like an odd choice when everything is going electric for someone to stick with a cart and a buggy.”

Stop-motion animation is such a labor-intensive process that it almost seems masochistic. The method is daunting: Every figure needs to be manually adjusted for each frame, of which there are 24 each second, 1440 each minute. Never mind that computer generation can do anything stop-motion can … and better, in much less time. Yet, while CG is inarguably the major reason for the fall of stop-motion, its biggest proponents are now using the so-called “author of their demise” to save the beloved medium.

Although stop-motion has been around nearly since the dawn of film, the process hasn’t changed much since its inception. Today’s stop-motion animators are going through steps similar to those followed by George Melies in order to send men to the moon in 1902: the figures and set are designed, sculpted (most often out of clay) and manipulated by hand.

Since it began its sharpest decline in the early 1990s, that lack of adaptation has been a reality of which the industry is all too aware. As anecdote would have it: Steven Spielberg hired the renowned stop-motion animator Phil Tippett for work on the dinosaurs in “Jurassic Park” (1993), eventually bringing on CG expert in favor of stop-motion. When Spielberg told him that he’d been replaced, he said, “No, I’ve gone extinct.”

“For people who loved and were practitioners of stop motion in the ’90s, that’s kind of how we felt,” said Travis Knight, producer and lead animator on “The Boxtrolls.” “Everything was shifting over to the computer and so it definitely feels like an odd choice when everything is going electric for someone to stick with a cart and a buggy.”

For Knight, like many proponents he mentions, he was passionate about stop-motion, but he understood that he couldn’t be complacent about its path to endangerment. Teaming up with Laika animation studios, he became part of a process that has begun to define stop-motion as more than the “herky jerky” experience it had come to represent.

boxtrolls

Laika is best known for “Coraline” (2009), for which Knight won an Academy Award. Their most recent feature, “The Boxtrolls,” is the most highly developed use of stop-motion to date. Although, that’s not to say it wasn’t labor intensive.

“I’m sure most career advisors don’t list miniature sofa upholsterer as a job.”

Isaac Hempstead Wright (who voices the lead role of Eggs) was impressed with just how much work went into every detail still being set in place when he came on after the film had been in development for over seven years.

“I’m sure most career advisors don’t list miniature sofa upholsterer as a job,” Wright said. “On set, there were people upholstering sofas or creating mini furniture or mini cabbages for the garden. The detail of the work is unbelievable.”

The extensive preparation “The Boxtrolls” required was largely centered around figuring out how time filming would be spent. The most difficult part of this period included planning out a ballroom dancing scene.

Directors Anthony Stacchi and Graham Annable remembered discussing the sequence and meeting resistance from a room of overeager draftsmen. “The room went totally silent,” Stacchi said. “It was like: there’s no way we can do this.” It turned out there was a way, but it took over 18 months to execute.”

One of the draftsmen, Emanuela Cosi, studied every instance of the waltz on film and drew out hard sketches so that animators could better understand the dancers’ movements. Then a composer, Dario Marinelli, was brought on in order to write the piece of music the waltz would be set to. From there, Stacchi and Annable took Cosi’s sketches and Marinelli’s music to a group of local choreographers who danced through the entire sequence and had it filmed in every direction for reference. With that in mind, the sculptors reformatted the armatures in the women’s dresses, so that they could move up and down through the steps. All of this was mere anticipatory work for the actual filming process. The final cut of the scene was two minutes long.

At it’s core, much of the process is still the same, though CG has made an incredible difference when it comes to smoothing out the image and eliminating the most impractical aspects of frame-by-frame manipulation.

Knight estimates that Eggs has 1.4 million facial expressions over the course of “The Boxtrolls,” a number that would have been impossible to achieve, even if it was something that could be done with precision. “You could never get the changes between expressions as subtle as you like doing it by hand,” he said. “So we turned to rapid prototype printing to take the place of sculpting every individual face.”

The use of CG also allowed “The Boxtrolls” (and “Coraline” before it) a certain clarity as well or, as Stacchi put it, “made the image more fantastic.” It’s true, but returns us to the question of why one would choose to use stop-motion in the first place. Couldn’t you just get that more fantastic image in less than half the time using CG?

“There’s something you get out of the hand-crafted quality of stop motion,” Annable said. “It’s real life landing on real fabrics. Deep in the DNA of everybody there is the memory of having played with toys or trucks or model trains and I think stop-motion gets right into people’s subconscious. It’s like a dream world that you just don’t get with hand drawn animation which has an appeal of its own, graphic things coming alive and living.”

eggs

” If under all the fancy tools, you don’t have anything there, it’s all just an empty experience.”

There is something special about it, a tangibility to the texture that rests in the fact that it is, in a way, real. Everything you see on screen exists somewhere (in Laika’s studios, to be specific). A tiny Eggs exists, as well as a tiny box trolls family and the even tinier bugs they eat throughout the movie. They have all been built by hand, and that allows them a visceral quality that renders something different than the bigger-means-better push of CG.

Since it is based on a children’s book (Alan Snow’s “Here Be Monsters”), “The Boxtrolls is an especially good fit for stop-motion, because it begs the magical feel of a fairy tale coming to life. But Knight believes any story could be told through the process.

“At it’s core, what you’re looking at is a physical thing that was shot on a set with a real life camera being brought to life by the hands of an animator,” Stacchi said.

And maybe part of the appeal is in something so painstakingly detailed, but also refreshingly small. “I think it’s rarer and rarer to go to the movie theater now where everything isn’t just louder and bigger. It can get bigger and bigger and bigger, but in the end, a lot of the stuff just ends up being hollow,” Stacchi said. “Directors have to figure out what they’re trying to do with this stuff.”

Stacchi, like Knight, understands that stop-motion will never be the “queen of the realm,” like CG, but he hopes it will continue to prosper, despite the fact that modern technology has moved so far past Melies and his trip into outer space.

“Stop-motion has its limitations, but I also think the process elicits something at the other end that has this quality of warmth, charm and beauty that’s unlike anything else,” Stacchi said. “So, that’s why we focus on that bit of film making, despite the fact that it’s so damn hard.”

Hello Kitty Is Not A Cat Because Nothing Makes Sense Anymore

You might want to sit down for this one.

Sanrio has revealed Hello Kitty — the supposedly adorable feline character that adorns everything from lunch boxes and toasters to t-shirts and lingerie — is, in fact, not a cat. We repeat NOT A CAT.

Just what is Hello Kitty, you’re asking?

Hello Kitty is a human girl (and a British one at that), Christine R. Yano, the author of “Pink Globalization: Hello Kitty’s Trek Across the Pacific,” told The Los Angeles Times.

“Hello Kitty is not a cat. She’s a cartoon character. She is a little girl. She is a friend. But she is not a cat. She’s never depicted on all fours. She walks and sits like a two-legged creature,” Yano explained to the Times.

And if you are ready for your mind to be just a little more blown, the character we all know as Hello Kitty is actually Kitty White — a Scorpio who loves apple pie, and is the daughter of George and Mary White.

“She has a twin sister. She’s a perpetual third-grader. She lives outside of London. I could go on. A lot of people don’t know the story and a lot don’t care,” Yano told the paper.

This Dude Makes Proposing At Bonnaroo Look Pretty Damn Romantic

John Ferreira knew he wanted to propose to his girlfriend Catherine Mauro at Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival after the two attended last year and absolutely fell in love with the experience.

“It’s one of the few places on earth where you can just remain in the moment instead of worrying about work or bills,” he told HuffPost Weddings of the Manchester, Tenn. festival. “There is just an overall sense of freedom there, it’s just magical.”

Six months ago, Ferreira turned to his friends on Reddit for help with the proposal. And help they did — all the way from conception to execution. Below, he explains how it all went down:

And like the courteous festivalgoer he is, Ferreira made sure to pop the question early on so that no one who was helping out would have to miss any of the weekend’s main events. Good call, Ferreira.

Watch the entire proposal unfold in the video below.

Aisle View: Lambeth Lad Makes Good

2014-06-03-JustJimDale130r.jpg

The Roundabout gives us just Jim Dale — casually attired in gray trousers, gray shirt and gray hair, on an empty stage but for a baby grand piano — in their latest offering at the Laura Pels. Dale is trim, slight, and approaching eighty, but he turns out to be more than enough to fill the stage entertainment-wise. Simply put, Just Jim Dale is unalloyed joy, starring the self-proclaimed “hosted, toasted, roasted lucky Jim.”

Young Jim Smith hailed from middle-of-nowhere Rothwell, a factory town with no room for advancement nor prospects. The bright spot of his existence, he tells us, was the local music hall. At seventeen, he escaped by clowning his way into a traveling troupe of teen talent, landing his spot by lacing his act with pratfalls (billed as “Jimmy Smith, the Laff Smith”). As music hall started to die out in the late ’50s, the twenty-ish Dale became a chart-topping rock ‘n’ roller, with his recordings produced by a pre-Beatles George Martin. Dale’s song-writing career peaked with the Oscar-nominated lyrics for the title song of the 1966 film, Georgy Girl.

All of this is related in song — songs from Dale’s career, or existing songs with new lyrics by Dale — and story. The star makes it look effortlessly simple, weaving his tales and adventures into gloriously funny set-pieces. He has made a side career as reader of the phenomenally-successful Harry Potter audiobooks; he clearly knows how to tell a tale.

Dale moves from recording studio to TV to Shakespeare to Broadway, gliding along in a seemingly low-pressure, endearing manner which leaves us defenseless. His singing is droll; his dancing is in the eccentric comedy style, a skeleton on springs with ankles turned in impossible positions; and he peppers the narrative with corny jokes of the music hall variety. (A toff in top hat walks onstage and calls into the wings “put the Rolls in the garage, James.” Then adds: “I’ll butter them later.”)

Among the set pieces are a pas de deux by eleven-year-old Jimmy with his cousin Ruth, except she fails to appear; a nimble-tongued spiel of familiar phrases from Shakespeare; an audition of the song Georgy Girl, for two Godfather-style gangsters; a monologue from Noël Coward’s play Fumed Oak; an audience participation scene from A Day in the Death of Joe Egg, which Dale memorably played for the Roundabout in 1985; and a mélange of Potter voices. Dale is accompanied by pianist Mark York, on a simple but elegant set from Anna Louizos. Richard Maltby, Jr. directed the show, which was originally mounted at the Long Wharf in New Haven in 2012.

Special attention is given to Dale’s Broadway appearances. He tells us how the first musical he saw as a child–a West End revival of Me and My Girl, starring Lupino Lane — instantly made him want to be a performer, and forty years later he was himself on Broadway, “doin’ the Lambeth Walk, oi!” (Dale grew up in Northamptonshire, far from the London district of Lambeth, but no matter.) Just Jim Dale also reprises three selections from Barnum, the 1980 musical for which he won a Tony Award: “There’s a Sucker Born Every Minute” and “The Museum Song” showing off Dale’s vocal dexterity, and “The Colors of My Life” as a salute to his wife.

Dale also pauses to mention Scapino, the 1974 treat with which the talented Englishman veritably exploded on Broadway. Those of us who saw this Dale/Frank Dunlop adaptation of Moliere’s Scapin, at the Circle in the Square or Ambassador Theatre, are still marveling over Dale swinging through the air on a rope brandishing an oversized salami. It is a supreme pleasure, for at least some of us, to hear him once more sing his Neapolitan “Minestrone, Macaroni” song.

Luciana Souza: A Bossa Nova Baby Makes Her Mark in the Jazz Realm

In 2013, Luciana Souza gained a place among the world’s top contemporary jazz singers by earning not one but two Grammy nominations, for The Book of Chet (for Best Jazz Vocal Album) and Duos III (Best Latin Jazz Album). The 47-year-old Brazilian vocalist now has a total of six Grammy nominations, a distinction that has gone largely unrecognized in her native country. She has also appeared on Herbie Hancock’s Grammy-winning River: The Joni Letters and works by Bobby McFerrin, John Patitucci, Till Brönner and Argentine composer Osvaldo Golijov, to name a few, and performed with several symphony orchestras. Souza sings with a quiet intensity and — in The Book of Chet and Duos III — favors spare, stripped-down arrangements. Her voice is clear and perfectly in tune, with a beautiful tone, and her phrasing is often daring, even startling. She’s a vocalist who once said “each phrase for me has a certain gestalt” and she invites you to savor both the notes and the spaces between them. Souza is spectacular in a João Gilberto kind of way — you have to listen attentively to fully appreciate all the nuances.

Souza’s artistic influences include Gilberto (who invented bossa nova’s guitar beat and introduced a low-key vocal style) and singers like Chet Baker, Carmen McRae and Joni Mitchell. She’s a child of bossa nova and jazz in more ways than one. Souza was born in São Paulo to songwriter parents (Walter and Tereza Souza) who were part of the bossa nova scene in their city and later founded Som da Gente, a small independent record label dedicated to Brazilian jazz and instrumental music, which included the great composer and multi-instrumentalist Hermeto Pascoal on its roster. At home she was surrounded by the music of her parents and their musician friends. “Music was everything, music was the bread maker, music was the dream, music was hopeful; it was humor, it was the language that was spoken at the house. My father being a guitar player, he never left his guitar; he was constantly playing. It was happy, it was fun,” Souza recalls.

Walter wrote commercial jingles to pay the rent, and he started using little Luciana in the recordings when she was just three years old. She says:

I think they detected early on that I could sing in tune and I was musical and I had a facility for learning melodies and learning language. So they encouraged me and the recording studio was like the living room to me. It was an extension of everything we did. We sang at home, we sang in the studio. They would teach me a melody, and I just loved it.

At age 18, Souza moved to Boston to attend the Berklee School of Music. There, she developed her talents as a singer as well as her abilities as an educator — she eventually joined Berklee’s faculty and after that taught at the Manhattan School of Music in New York. Since 1992, she has released 11 albums, and won her first four Grammy nominations with Brazilian Duos (2003), North and South (2004), Duos II (2006) and Tide (2010). She has interpreted Brazilian standards, recast songs by great American songwriters as bossa nova (The New Bossa Nova) and boldly devoted entire albums to musical interpretations of poets (The Poems of Elizabeth Bishop and Other Songs and Neruda). Along with way she married bassist-producer Larry Klein, with whom she has a young son; they moved to Los Angeles in 2006. He produced both The Book of Chet and Duos III. Souza has now been living in the U.S. for nearly thirty years, and is glad about her choice. “I came here — to Berklee, to Boston, to New York, and L.A. — because this is the music I want to make. I want to be in the environment, I want to be with the musicians, I want to speak this language; I need to be here.” She adds, “As much as I miss Brazil, I find that here I can really be myself.”

Her two recent Grammy-nominated albums reflect Souza’s musical vision and her versatility. The Book of Chet is an homage to jazz trumpeter-vocalist Chet Baker (1929-1988), who was a major influence on many bossa nova musicians, and includes songs recorded by him such as “The Thrill is Gone,” “Oh You Crazy Moon,” “The Very Thought Of You,” “You Go To My Head” and “Forgetful.” The song choices were an attempt to capture the breadth of his career, rather than to compile his biggest successes.

“I was obsessed with him when I was in graduate school at the New England Conservatory,” Souza comments about Baker. She says:

And then twenty years later I came across one of [his] biographies and then his autobiography and Let’s Get Lost [the 1988 documentary about Baker]. And it came back to me — why did I love him so much? And I got all the records out. His voice moves me so deeply…the way he sings…It’s so pure, so direct, so unadorned. To me, there’s an incredible, quiet, calm sadness. He’s like a kindred spirit, musically and vocally.

On The Book of Chet, “The Thrill Is Gone” (not to be confused with the B.B. King song of the same name) is particularly haunting, with Souza’s rather somber vocals over hypnotic repeating figures on bass and guitar, while “The Very Thought of You,” with Souza’s luscious rendering, is another of the album’s many high points.

The Book of Chet and Duos III were released the same day and both were direct live recordings with few instruments. However, while the former album is consistently understated and introspective, with slow tempos that push the envelope, Duos III ranges across a variety of genres, including bossa nova, baião, some lively sambas (like “Tim Tim Por Tim Tim” and “Doralice,” both with impressive scatting) and the wordless singing of “Dona Lu,” written for Souza by Pereira.

On Duos III, the third in a series, Souza performs duets with three renowned Brazilian guitarists — Romero Lubambo, Marco Pereira and Toninho Horta — as she interprets Brazilian compositions, most of them standards, from composers like Antonio Carlos Jobim (four selections), Haroldo Barbosa, Dorival Caymmi, Gilberto Gil, Ivan Lins, Djavan, Dominguinhos and Cartola, as well as Pereira and Horta.

Souza likes the combination of voice and guitar “because it’s how I grew up and because of my dad doing that.” She adds:

The guitar doesn’t sustain and the sound decays and dies; it allows for silence. The guitar can be very percussive, very melodic, and very harmonic, obviously. All these different possibilities in terms of orchestration can happen with just one instrument. So it is my favorite instrument but also it comes from the Brazilian tradition. A lot of these songs were written on guitar, we can do them in the original keys, and it just colors the music in a certain way, gives it the right color, the right timbre.

She adds, “and the people that I play with are very able and agile and most of them really have this sensibility in terms of improvisation.” Each of the three guitarists has a quite different approach, technically and artistically. “You take the same exact guitar and give it to Romero or Marco or Toninho, for example, and they sound completely different. Marco is almost an intellectual with the guitar; he’s a romantic, so he brings that kind of heavy heart, but is full of technique and thought” while “Romero is all fire, all rhythm, completely improvisatory.”

Regarding Toninho Horta, she comments that in “the lineage of Brazilian music, Toninho gets a chapter as a songwriter, as a lyricist, as a guitarist. He’s innovative in every way. His sense of harmony is unlike that of any other Brazilian — the most refined, advanced and modern thing in Brazilian music that I know of.” She teams with Horta, known to many Americans for his work with both Milton Nascimento and Pat Metheny, on four songs, including his own “Pedro da Lua” and “Beijo Partido.”

Duos III and The Book of Chet were recorded after a nearly three-year break while Souza focused on being a new mother. “At this point in my life it was very important to put out those two records because I hadn’t made a record [in a while] and it just made sense to come out very quiet and very strong.” About her six total Grammy nominations, Souza says, “It feels good. It talks about all the possibilities for small artists. Only one [album] was done for a major record label [Verve], and five others for independents. It’s sort of an homage to my parents, because they were an independent record company.”

The Luciana Souza Quintet — with guitarist Lionel Loueke, harmonica player Gregoire Maret, bassist Massimo Biolcati and drummer Kendrick Scott — will perform Jan. 17 at the Acadiana Center for the Arts in Lafayette, LA, Jan. 18 at the Carver Center in San Antonio, and Jan. 23 at Duke University in Durham, NC.

Orlando Bloom Makes A Huge ‘Lord Of The Rings’ Confession On ‘Kimmel’ (VIDEO)

Orlando Bloom made millions of women swoon as he rocketed to superstardom on the Legolas express during the original “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy. On “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” though, the actor made a confession about the iconic role.

“I read ‘The Hobbit’ when I was a kid. I got part-way through ‘The Lord of The Rings,’ but … girls were far more interesting,” Bloom admitted. He’s not alone in that. The “LOTR” trilogy is always among lists of the most “unfinished” books of all time. Clocking in at more than 1,000 pages, it’s certainly a daunting task.

Ironically, he read the part of J.R.R. Tolkien’s saga that didn’t involve Legolas, and yet now he’s portraying the character in Part 2 of Peter Jackson’s “The Hobbit” trilogy. Bloom told Kimmel that he was concerned about it, but had total faith in Jackson, saying, “Peter really understands this world and I think he’s got one eye on the fans and the Tolkien people and the people who are real fans of the movie and he’s also got one eye on making it a successful, fantastic movie.”

Ian McKellan — who has portrayed the wizard Gandalf in all of Jackson’s Tolkien films — explained on “The Daily Show” how Jackson was able to split the relatively short “Hobbit” into three films. This is the advantage of literature over film. If Tolkien writes, ‘The army of 10,000 arrived on the plain,’ for Peter Jackson that’s not enough,” he said. “You gotta build it up. You have to see the 10,000 arriving. It’s a long time for 10,000 to arrive in one place.”

Orlando Bloom and Ian McKellan are reunited in “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug,” in theaters December 13. “Jimmy Kimmel Live” airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. EST on ABC. “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” airs Monday through Thursday at 11 p.m. EST on Comedy Central.

‘SNL’ Spoofs Kanye West & Kim Kardashian, And Lady Gaga Makes Fun Of Herself

“Saturday Night Live” went out on a limb this weekend and parodied known parody-of-himself hater Kanye West and Kim Kardashian in a talk show spoof, “Waking Up with Kimye.”

Jay Pharoah and Nasid Pedrad nailed their respective impersonations of the A-list celebrity couple, with Kanye fawning over Kim’s supposed innovation (“She just changed the game! Food is jewelry now!” he exclaimed, as Kim held up a macaroni necklace).

He then brought on a nerdy woman, played by host Lady Gaga, who works at the Apple Store’s Genius Bar. He pointed out how dull her clothes are, leading Gaga’s character to winkingly remark, “I don’t care about fashion. I think people who try too hard with their outfits are maybe hiding something.”

She continued to make fun of her own flashy sartorial choices: “Like, come on, dress like a person!”

Only time will tell how and if West will respond to the sketch. Earlier this year, he was rumored to have threatened to pull out of his scheduled “SNL” performance if the sketch show made fun of Kardashian.
