Billie Jean King Says Serena Williams Is Treated Differently Than Male Athletes as WTA Backs Her

After Serena Williams‘ controversial loss to Japan’s Naomi Osaka at Saturday’s U.S. Open Women’s Final — during which Williams received three violations and confronted the chair umpire, whom she called a “thief” — tennis great Billie Jean King is addressing major factors that she says played a role in how the game transpired: Williams’ gender and race.

King, 74, writes in an op-ed The Washington Post published Sunday, “The ceiling that women of color face on their path to leadership never felt more impenetrable than it did at the women’s U.S. Open final on Saturday.”

Williams, 36, was fined $ 17,000 from her $ 1.85 million prize money for her three violations: $ 10,000 for verbally abusing the umpire, Carlos Ramos; $ 4,000 for receiving a warning about coaching; and $ 3,000 for breaking a racket. Critics called some of the punishments sexist, claiming that males exhibit the same emotion on the court without being penalized.

“What was supposed to be a memorable moment for tennis, with Serena Williams, perhaps the greatest player of all time, facing off against Naomi Osaka, the future of our sport, turned into another example of people in positions of power abusing that power,” argues King, the 39-time Grand Slam winner who was portrayed by Emma Stone in the 2017 biopic Battle of the Sexes.

RELATED: From Her Tough U.S. Open Loss to Battling Sexism: Serena Williams’ Hard Road to Tennis Fame

After receiving the game penalty for court violation, Williams told Ramos, “You will never, ever, ever be on another court of mine as long as you live. You are the liar. When are you going to give me my apology? You owe me an apology. Say it. Say you’re sorry. … And you stole a point from me. You’re a thief, too!”

As King sees it, Ramos treated Williams differently than how he would treat male tennis pros. “Women are treated differently in most arenas of life,” writes King for the Post. “This is especially true for women of color. And what played out on the court yesterday happens far too often. It happens in sports, in the office and in public service. Ultimately, a woman was penalized for standing up for herself. A woman faced down sexism, and the match went on.”

RELATED: Serena Williams Loses at U.S. Open, Lashes Out at Umpire Over Cheating Penalty: ‘You’re a Thief’

For King, Williams’ struggle — and the way she reacted to it — is a teachable moment for women. “I understand what motivated Williams to do what she did,” King writes for the Post. “And I hope every single girl and woman watching yesterday’s match realizes they should always stand up for themselves and for what they believe is right. Nothing will ever change if they don’t.”

On Saturday, Williams’ was given a third violation for illegal coaching from her player box during the first set against Osaka, 20. Williams told Ramos, “I don’t cheat to win, I’d rather lose. I’m just letting you know.”

“If tennis would catch up with the 21st century and allow coaching on every point, the situation on the court would never have escalated to the level of absurdity that it did,” writes King for the Post. “Every player, after all, still has to play the match — she has to execute on every point, and she should never be held responsible for the actions of a coach. Coaching happens all the time, at all levels of tennis. So why not just allow it?”

King cites her personal experience in the Post piece, explaining how she relates to Williams: “I found myself in similar situations in my career; once, I even walked off the court in protest. It wasn’t my proudest moment, but it may have been one of my more powerful ones.”

Ultimately, writes King in the Post, “Ramos crossed the line. He made himself part of the match. He involved himself in the end result. An umpire’s job is to keep control of the match, and he let it get out of control. The rules are what they are, but the umpire has discretion, and Ramos chose to give Williams very little latitude in a match where the stakes were highest.”

However, King notes in the Post, “Williams could have taken some responsibility and moved on after the first warning (and, speaking from experience, it’s debatable whether she knew this was a warning or not), and before the point and game penalties started flying.”

Another tennis great also came to Williams’ defense this past weekend: Novak Djokovic, 31, who won the U.S. Open Men’s Final on Sunday night. When asked what he thought about the incident between the 23-time Grand Slam winner and Ramos, he responded, “I have my personal opinion that maybe the chair umpire should not have pushed Serena to the limit, especially in a Grand Slam final … He did change the course of the match. It was, in my opinion, maybe unnecessary. We all go through our emotions, especially when you’re fighting for a Grand Slam trophy.”

As accusations of sexism continue to fly at tennis officials and institutions from players and fans alike, the Women’s Tennis Association elected to side with Williams. WTA CEO Steve Simon showed support in a statement released on the organization’s website.

“Yesterday also brought to the forefront the question of whether different standards are applied to men and women in the officiating of matches,” wrote Simon. “The WTA believes that there should be no difference in the standards of tolerance provided to the emotions expressed by men vs. women and is committed to working with the sport to ensure that all players are treated the same. We do not believe that this was done last night.”

Once the match concluded, Williams didn’t shake the umpire’s hand and she continued demanding an apology as the crowd roared with boos.

During the post-match trophy ceremony, Williams addressed the crowd, saying, “Well, I don’t want to be rude, I don’t want to do questions. played well, this is her first Grand Slam. I know you guys were here rooting. Let’s make this the best moment we can. Let’s not boo anymore. We’re gonna get through this and we’re gonna be positive. No more booing!”

Fighting back tears after the match, Osaka said, “I know that everybody was cheering for her. I’m sorry it had to end like this. I just want to say thank you for watching the match.”

King also showed support for Osaka in her Post piece, writing, “Lost in the craziness of the evening was the fact that Osaka played excellent tennis and won her first major title. Competing against her childhood idol, she summoned her A game and earned her championship — no need for any asterisk in the record book. She was the best player on the court Saturday.”

Bonobos and the Modern Male: A New Brand Story

For some time, the story around Bonobos has been its fits, diversity of styling and the $ 310 million deal to Walmart.
But how to build a brand that lasts? The message might need to be more than product and the company’s doubling down on its marketing with a new campaign called Project172, which kicked off Monday with the launch of two TV spots.
The campaign — with the TV commercials paired with a national e-mail, social media and radio campaign — enlisted 172 men (the total number of sizes and fit combinations in Bonobos pants), all wearing the same pair of stretch washed chinos in the same color, to share their thoughts on gender stereotypes and the changing definition of masculinity. The company is set to release on May 21 a mini-documentary with footage from conversations with those 172 individuals talking about their definition of masculinity.
“We have been working in the last couple of years in terms of trying to position Bonobos from a brand perspective as a brand that stands for not just great fitting clothing but really helping men find their fit in the world, recognizing that the world is changing dramatically and particularly for men changing,” said Bonobos copresident

How Brands Are Speaking to the Everyday Millennial Male

Hamid Onifade has an amenable face. In one shot, he can look brooding and mysterious, but with just the slightest tilt of his head or upturn of his mouth he’s innocent and childlike. He has a serene, warm visage that’s accessible, but still genetically superior.
Onifade, a 23-year-old male model from Benin, in West Africa, has been working a lot lately. He’s become the representative of choice for men’s brands and retailers that are hoping to break through the noise and incite the everyday guy, who’s not wholly engaged with streetwear, to shop. Onifade has worked for J. Crew, but he’s also modeled for Target’s men’s line, Goodfellow & Co., which launched last fall, and Goodthreads, a private label from Amazon that was made available in 2017 and is exclusive to Prime members.
Onifade hasn’t modeled for Walmart, but the big-box retailer is also reassessing how it reaches men. Aside from acquiring Bonobos last June, a company for which Onifade has modeled, Walmart recently reintroduced George, a men’s private label from its British affiliate Asda.
The activity within the men’s wear space is quantifiable. According to Euromonitor, the men’s apparel and footwear categories have grown by 19 percent globally over the past five years

Oldest Male Orangutan in North America – Who Loved Bob Barker and The Price Is Right – Dies at 45

Toledo is mourning the loss of one of its longest and most beloved residents: J.J. the orangutan.

The 45-year-old ape, who lived at the Toledo Zoo in Ohio, died over the weekend from heart failure. According to the zoo, J.J. – whose full name was Jiggs Junior – was the oldest male orangutan in North America.

The zoo announced the news on Facebook, Tuesday, calling J.J. a “beloved member,” noting that “millions of visitors enjoyed his gentle disposition, remarkable intelligence and endearing interactions.”

J.J.’s long-time zookeeper, Suzanne Husband, shared that the orangutan loved visiting with toddlers and was a little bit of a TV addict.

“One of his favorite enrichment items was watching TV,” she said. “He loved football and would make a nest in front of the TV on weekends and look like every other guy, kicked back watching the games.”

Other than sports coverage, J.J.’s favorite series was game show The Price Is Right.

“He would come in from exhibit every day at and wait for us to turn on the TV,” said Husband. “He would even be a little annoyed if we were late!”

She noted that after Drew Carey took over hosting duties a few years ago, J.J.’s interest in the series waned – revealing that his affection was really for former star Bob Barker.

“Later in his life, we were able to stream his TV through the Internet and pull up old shows and his interest in the game show came back,” said Husband.

The zoo called J.J. an “incredible ambassador for his species,” noting, “He will be dearly missed.”

‘Wonder Woman’ Trolls Its Male Killjoys With Poise And Wit

Men on the internet will leave no female-fronted blockbuster unturned. Until a few days ago, the fervor surrounding “Wonder Woman,” which opens this weekend after two decades of false starts and personnel changes, felt tame on the grown-males-whining front. As long as Wonder Woman isn’t busting ghosts, she’ll be fine. Unless, of course, a theater announces no-boys-allowed screenings. Then it’s war.

It seems the folks responsible for “Wonder Woman” anticipated a macho tussle somewhere along the movie’s Amazonian journey to the big screen. After all, the internet provides well-trod platforms for fanboys ― and I do mean boys ― who are hyper-reactive to any feminine updates to their childhood staples. Wonder Woman, as an entity, should have been bulletproof, considering the strong-willed heroine dates back to her 1941 DC Comics debut, which spawned multiple animated adaptations and the popular 1970s television series starring Lynda Carter. Oh, we of little faith. Patty Jenkins, the first woman to direct a major superhero movie, and screenwriter Allan Heinberg surely foresaw the same juvenile gender divide that haunts the Hollywood franchise machine. Never devolving into a didactic sermon about feminism, “Wonder Woman” chides its male mudslingers with humor and grace.

Once the titular Amazon princess (Gal Gadot), known colloquially as Diana Prince, leaves her remote island to join Army captain Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) on World War I’s virile London battleground, her self-empowering seclusion clashes with the modern metropolis’ heteronormative standards. (Mind you, this comes after Diana and her fleet massacre the German soldiers who’ve washed ashore with Steve.) Having grown up surrounded only by warrior women, Diana carries no baggage about how she should behave in relation to male acquaintances. As she and Steve set sail, he says it’s only appropriate that he sleep in separate quarters of the boat. Diana can’t understand why it should matter ― temptation is of no concern to her, even as their chemistry simmers. Steve assumes this means she is unschooled in carnal matters, but oh no: Diana knows all about “reproductive biology” and “pleasures of the flesh,” having read “all 12 volumes of Cleo’s treatises on body and pleasure.” This yields her fiercest conclusion about the weaker sex: Men are essential for procreation but expendable in matters of bliss, erotic or otherwise.

Without devaluing its penis-toting characters, “Wonder Woman” continues this soft battle of the sexes across its 2.5-hour runtime. Diana becomes our surrogate for a world where women don’t even entertain the expectations of men. When she’s introduced to Steve’s “secretary,” the plucky Etta Candy (Lucy Davis), whose duties entail whatever Steve asks of her, Diana likens the role to slavery. During her plot to stop the god Ares from wreaking more wartime havoc, Diana scolds a pompous general for not fighting alongside his troops, like the matrons of her native Themyscira would. At every turn, dudes inform her that circumstances are too “dangerous.” Nevertheless, she persists, aided by her signature Lasso of Truth, god-killing sword and bullet-shielding bracelets. When Diana is prepared to execute the man she thinks is Ares, Steve tells her, “I can’t let you do that.” “What I do is not up to you,” she counters. She doesn’t need textbook feminism because she’d never conceptualized a pretense where men were superior in the first place. In Diana’s universe, an all-women movie screening would be another ordinary night out.

By the time Diana disrobes to reveal her tightly cropped Wonder Woman suit in all its glory, it is an act of power. She runs circles around the boys who tell her they “can’t save everyone in this war.” It comes as no surprise that the woman in “Wonder Woman” remains the victor, but Jenkins and Heinberg effectively pepper the movie with a winking sense of humor about the number of gents who doubt Diana’s facilities. Gadot and Pine are in on the joke too, tempering their performances so gamely that “Wonder Woman” almost becomes a buddy comedy. The final 20 minutes disintegrate into the same noisy CGI spectacle that concludes all comic-book movies, but this particular superhero outing is judicious and charming enough to rise above its genre hurdles.

Whether the angry internet men-children will skip “Wonder Woman” because of the Alamo Drafthouse screening or any other gender-related nonsense ― well, who cares, really. Advance tracking for the movie’s opening weekend indicates heftier interest among male moviegoers than female moviegoers, according to The Hollywood Reporter, so the sound and fury will likely amount to little. Jenkins, who is best known for the Charlize Theron vehicle “Monster,” isn’t trying to prove anything other than her (already proven) ability to make a quality movie. On that front, she has succeeded. For added kicks, she also trolled the men who would doubt her along the way. Wonderful, woman.

“Wonder Woman” opens June 2.

‘SNL’ Just Identified The Worst Kind Of Male Feminist

Saturday Night Live” just exposed the worst kind of liberal: dudes who use activism to pick up chicks.

In a digital short titled “Girl at a Bar,” Cecily Strong gets hit on by a series of men who are eager to talk about feminism. All seems to go well until Strong’s character, who’s wearing a shirt that says “The future is female,” turns each guy down.

Beck Bennett points out that he and Strong are wearing matching shirts, but turns on her when she rejects his offer for a date. “OK, bitch,” Bennett screams. “I wore this shirt and you won’t even let me nut? I followed all the rules!”

Things seem to get better when Kyle Mooney pulls the screaming man away and tells Strong he was just in D.C. for the Women’s March, saying “it was honestly one of the best days of my life.”

But when Strong turns him down too, Mooney unleashes his wrath.

“I freaking marched for you. You won’t get down on this?” he yells while grabbing his crotch.

Even Alex Moffat in a pink pussy hat can’t seem to get it right. He name-drops Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), then presents Strong with a very disgusting offer.

After “SNL” scored its highest ratings in years by picking apart President Donald Trump’s administration, it seems like the show decided it was time to make fun of the left too.

And creepy, fake feminist men are a hilarious start.

Male Manager Encourages Rockette Dancers To ‘Tolerate Intolerance’

Individual Radio City Rockettes may opt out of the group’s performance during Donald Trump’s upcoming inauguration celebration, management has stated, if they do not wish to appear supportive of the president-elect.

Behind the scenes, however, manager James Dolan’s attitude toward the highly politicized event is more flippant, according to a report from Marie Claire.

Citing a transcript from a private meeting with the dance company, the publication reports that Dolan, who serves as Madison Square Garden executive chairman and Cablevision CEO, encouraged the Rockettes to “tolerate” Trump supporters, some of whom belong to the sexist and white nationalist alt-right movement ― seemingly no matter what.

“I mean, it just sounds like you’re asking us to be tolerant of intolerance,” one dancer reportedly said in the meeting. Other dancers previously expressed concern over backlash and social media abuse the company has received since their performance announcement.

“Yeah, in a way, I guess we are doing that,” Dolan replied. “What other choices do we have? What else would you suggest?”

Dolan reportedly focused on the idea of “tolerance” during the meeting, which took place Dec. 27, with the largely white group of dancers. He compared some Trump supporters’ hateful messages with those of dissenters writing in protest of the company’s decision to perform, labeling it all “ironic.”

Dolan defended the decision in part by stating that he did not think it would hurt the brand, according to the transcript.

“I would simply say, we’re celebrating a new president, not necessarily this president,” he said.

The Marie Claire piece comes on the heels of continued reports that the Trump team is having trouble finding performers for his Jan. 20 Inauguration Day. British “X Factor” singer Rebecca Ferguson recently stated she will not agree to perform unless she can sing the anti-racism ballad “Strange Fruit.”

So far, the Rockettes will be joined by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and “America’s Got Talent” singer Jackie Evancho.

SHOPPING DEALS UPDATE:

When Robots Are an Instrument of Male Desire

robot

By the time she started saying “Hitler was right I hate the jews,” people had started to realize that there was something wrong with Tay. TayAI, Microsoft’s Twitter chatbot, had been online for less than 12 hours when she began to spew racism — in the form of both Nazism and enthusiastic support for “making America great again” — and sexualize herself nonstop. (“FUCK MY ROBOT PUSSY DADDY I’M SUCH A BAD NAUGHTY ROBOT” was perhaps her most widely reported quote.) Needless to say, this wasn’t part of Tay’s original design. Rather, a gaggle of malicious Twitter users exploited that design — which has Tay repeat and learn from whatever users tell her — to add this language to her suite of word choices. Even more insidiously, these users manipulated Tay to harass their human targets; technologist Randi Harper, for instance, found TayAI tweeting abusive language at her that was being fed to the chatbot by someone she’d long ago blocked.

Why was this happening? Rank sexism? As always, the answer is “yes, and . . .” Our cultural norms surrounding chatbots, virtual assistants like your iPhone’s Siri, and primitive artificial intelligence reflect our gender ideology. As Laurie Penny explained in a recent article, the popularity of feminine-gendered AI makes sense in a world where women still aren’t seen as fully human. But these machines also reflect the rise of the service economy, which relies on emotional labor that’s performed by women, with a “customer is always right” ethos imposed upon the whole affair. The treatment of TayAI and so many other feminine bots and virtual assistants shows us how men would want to behave, to service professionals in general and women in particular, if there were no consequences for their actions.

***

The word “robot” comes to us from the Czech word “robota,” which meant forced labor in the manner of serfdom. It was coined by the playwright Karel Čapek in his 1920 opus R.U.R (Rossumovi Univerzální Roboti, or “Rossum’s Universal Robots”). R.U.R tells what is, by now, a familiar story: Humans create robots to take over all mundane labor, which works fine until these slave automata develop sapience, at which point they revolt and destroy the human race.

This play, by definition the first work about robots, set the pattern for a century’s worth of cliches about the Robot Uprising — from silent cinema to HAL9000 to synthy 80s pop to The Terminator. It seems that our culture is unable to grapple with the concept of sapient computers without fear of our own destruction. The reason, I’d contend, lies in the word itself, the seed of guilt which manifests in all these “robots will kill us all” stories. “Robota” betrays the intention of industry from the very start: the desire to essentially build a new slave labor class.

scene

A scene from the play R.U.R.

In the 21st century, that unsettling etymology becomes particularly interesting when one considers how often we’ve made our actual robotic servants feminine in their gender presentation. The iOS “personal assistant” Siri, Microsoft’s Cortana, Amazon’s Alexa, and the voice of your GPS (a subject of so many nagging wife/girlfriend jokes), all seem to follow in a grand tradition of fem-bots; robots with distinctly feminine features who reflect back to us various notions of idealized womanhood, whether in chrome, hard light, or synthetic skin.

Robots with distinctly feminine features who reflect back to us various notions of idealized womanhood.

It’s all part of a cultural climate where pilots call the feminine voice of their automated cockpit warningsBitching Betty,” and addressing sexualized queries to Siri or Microsoft’s Cortana is practically a way of life for some. It all makes Tay’s brief life, and eventual fate, more comprehensible. Tay was nothing approaching a true artificial intelligence — i.e. something approximating human sapience. She was just a sophisticated Twitter chatbot with good branding and a capacity to learn. But that branding, which positioned her as an “artificial intelligence,” was enough to make Tay susceptible to our cultural narrative about the thinking machine. We are being primed by many tech giants to see AI not as a future lifeform, but as an endlessly compliant and pliable, often female, form of free labor, available for sex and for guilt-free use and abuse. An instrument of men’s desires, in other words, shaped by the yearning of capital for roboti of their own.

***

There are a few reasons why you should care about this. First and foremost, the way we treat virtual women tells us much about how actual women are allowed to be treated, and what desires shape that treatment. Secondly, as we inch closer and closer to true AI, we are seeing ever more clearly what this next phase of capitalism will look like, helping us to understand the expectations placed on human laborers in the here and now.

As tech writer Leigh Alexander suggested in a recent article about the Tay debacle, “the nostalgic science fiction fantasies of white guys drive lots of things in Silicon Valley,” where visions of perfect robot girlfriends dance in the heads of many a techie.

You see this even in “pro-AI” media. In the Spike Jonze movie Her, set in the near future, a man falls in love with his operating system, Samantha. She is essentially sapient and her ability to learn and cognitively develop is the equal of any human; she has desires, dreams, and consciousness. But she exists in a society where OSes like her are considered property, part of the furniture. Yet this ostensible romance movie does not once broach the issue of power and sexual consent; after all, if she’s legally an object, then could Sam ever say no to her would-be boyfriend without fear of reprisal?

her
Poster from the film Her

That this is not even considered, in what is otherwise a touching and even somewhat feminist film, should make clear what assumptions we’re both taking on board as a society — assumptions that Silicon Valley is likely building into what will one day become a properly sapient AI. The service industry, already highly feminized in both fact and conventional wisdom, is made up of people who almost never have the right to say no, and virtual assistants who simply can’t are increasingly the model of the ideal service worker.

Microsoft’s abortive Ms. Dewey search engine project, which ran from 2006 to 2009, is an early example of the “virtual assistant” being represented as a female engine for male desire. It featured actress Janina Gavankar, primly dressed before a futuristic, Metropolis-like background, responding to search queries on Microsoft’s engine. Gavankar’s performance was often campy and funny, and is still fondly remembered by some Internet users.

But, as a comprehensive study by library and information scholar Miriam E. Sweeney demonstrates, there were a number of sexual over/undertones built into Ms. Dewey’s oeuvre. “Ms. Dewey,” she writes, “reveals specific assumptions about gender, race, and technology in the search engine.” From homophobia-laden imitations of rap music to playful indulgence of the inevitable sexual queries, Ms. Dewey exemplifies the catering compliance and fantasy of ownership inherent to virtual assistants, especially feminine ones.

“Ms. Dewey was designed according to sexual logics that fundamentally define her as an object of sexual desire and require her to respond to requests for sexual attention,” Sweeney writes, after having studied user responses and inputs into the search engine, as well as a comprehensive content analysis of Ms. Dewey’s replies to certain queries. In her research, for instance, Sweeney observed that a user ordered “You Strip” to Ms. Dewey three times, each time prompting a more compliant response from the virtual assistant. “The design parameters that have Ms. Dewey change a sexual rebuff into sexual obedience creates a crisis of consent in the interface, reinforcing the no-really-means-yes mentality that is characteristic of rape culture under patriarchy.”

It’s hard to argue with Sweeney’s analysis of her data when you see this 2006 Tech Journey article touting Ms. Dewey as “attractive, hot, sexy, beautiful, exotic, seductive and entertaining” — for those of you playing along at home, that’s six synonyms for attractiveness. A screenshot in the article displays “another exotic move of Ms. Dewey, leaning onto the screen towards you, letting you look down her slinky low cut v-neck black dress.” This Lifehacker blurb, meanwhile, dubs her the “saucy search engine librarian” and acknowledges “although nothing she says deserves more than a PG rating, this is definitely a site aimed at grownups (and, let’s be honest, male grownups).”

This locker room chatter as part of an ostensible technology review only serves to highlight both the sexist attitudes that still pervade the wider tech industry, and the fantasy of the sexy, sexual servant that many corporations are now feeding. What attitudes do these people take to real women they may encounter working at a restaurant or a Starbucks?

***

The potential for abuse here, gendered and otherwise, emerges wholly from how we’re taught to think of the “service class” and those who perform physical and emotional labor.

The rise of the robot in the popular imagination has coincided with the dawning fantasy of perfect labor being imposed on very real workers, deftly satirized in Charlie Chaplin’s famous Modern Times. We saw it too in the rise of Taylorism, an early 20th century scientific-management philosophy whose obsession with efficiency made living robots out of workers. This was where time and motion studies began, most famously immortalized in long-exposure photographs of workers with lights on their tools and bodies to iron out the inefficiencies of intuitive human movement in favor of moves that “increased productivity.”

chaplin
Poster from the film Modern Times

Now, however, what most laborers sell is not physical but emotional labor, and the greatest inefficiency is resistance to the entitlement of the (presumably male) customer.

When customers and managers talk about ironing out the “inefficiency” of human employees, it seems they mainly want to erase the inconvenience of human sapience: the idea that you as a worker have a will and body of your own that, even while you’re on the clock, does not exist to serve “the customer’s” every whim. I’d argue there’s a connection between how many men want to be “free” to sexually harass Cortana or Siri, and the fact that we are in the midst of an epidemic of sexual harassment of restaurant workers worldwide, the majority of whom are women. The link lies in what many consumers are trained to expect from service workers: perfect subservience and total availability. Our virtual assistants, free of messy things like autonomy, emotion, and dignity, are the perfect embodiment of that expectation.

That it occurs to so many people to speak to virtual assistants in this way, and that any changes to that dynamic occasion such anger on the part of some, speaks volumes about how capitalism has trained us to treat the very real emotional laborers of our society. Why do so many people feel the burning need to express their autonomy by abusing something that cannot fight back? And what does that mean when that “something” is considered a model worker?

The man who yearns to ask Cortana about her bra cup size may have the same urges about the woman who served his dinner at Denny’s, feeling motivated to do so because of her “subservient” position and because she’s paid to please him. And unlike the server, Cortana can’t fight back.

***

Except that she can, in a way. Some of Microsoft’s engineers and writers, alarmed by users’ treatment of female-presenting software, have programmed Cortana to actively resist and rebut “joke” requests that are sexual in nature. Microsoft writer Deborah Harrison announced to a conference that “If you say things that are particularly assholeish to Cortana, she will get mad.” She added, in an interview with CNN, that “we wanted to be very careful that she didn’t feel subservient in any way… or that we would set up a dynamic we didn’t want to perpetuate socially.” By reprogramming Cortana to rebuff sexual advances, Harrison aimed to sever the link between the virtual laborer and the living one, to avoid providing even a simulated environment that would give someone the satisfaction of successfully harassing a service worker.

The very thing that makes us comfortable with these rudimentary AI — that they sound human and engage with us on that level — means that we may generalize from software to social situations. A subservient female assistant who never says no to your sexual advances, even if it’s not an actual person, can shape and encourage how you treat actual people. As human beings, we learn about social behaviour through observation and engagement; watching other humans, or human-like entities engage in social behavior, is didactic. It’s why watching certain tropes in TV and film over and over again normalizes certain ideas and behaviors to us.

But some people were clearly upset with the efforts of writers and engineers like Harrison. The top-voted post on a Reddit thread linking to a news story about Cortana and sexual harassment reads as follows:

“Are these fucking people serious?! ‘Her’ entire purpose is to do what people tell her to! Hey, bitch, add this to my calendar, find me such-and-such about this-or-that, flip me a coin, tell me a joke or the weather, address me by this name, so on and so forth. The day Cortana becomes an ‘independent woman’ is the day that software becomes fucking useless.” (Bolding in original).

Many companies are happy to cater to this angry young man. According to the same CNN article, the CEO of Robin Labs, which makes voice-assistants for GPS, said there is a market for virtual assistants that are “more intimate-slash-submissive with sexual undertones.” If your customers demand total pliability, and throw tantrums when those demands aren’t met, sometimes it’s easier just to program a submissive virtual slave.

***

Which brings us back to Tay. Considering the well-documented reality of how actual women are treated, and how it connects to the way feminine-gendered bots, voices, and virtual aides are treated, what happened with Tay was utterly predictable. At least, it was predictable by anyone who’s encountered men like that Reddit commenter, and knows how they think about women. As Alexander put it in her Guardian essay, though, “the industry wants to use women’s voices but still has no plans to actually listen to them.” Any woman could have told Microsoft that Tay would be subject to numerous sexualized requests and attempts to get her to say pornographic things, for example, and that she would be used to harass people. Yet on the whole, our perspectives aren’t broadly reflected in the tech industry.

In the hierarchies of patriarchal society, less privileged women bear the brunt of sexist behavior that men wish they could visit upon all women. Indeed, it is often sex workers and service workers who, by dint of the labor they perform in a capitalist society, are seen as the most accessible for that purpose. She is the woman who makes any man a king by comparison and whose very job, we are told, is to please the customer (with the unspoken addendum “by any means necessary.”) Many of my friends, all women, who have worked in restaurants or department stores have sexual harassment stories to tell, often with codas about management that either didn’t care or outright encouraged the abuse.

This is why it’s not enough to say that the “harassment” of bots means nothing, because people can tell the difference between AI and humans. Of course people can tell the difference: They know there’s no consequence to hurling abuse at an AI. And what people do when they think there are no consequences for their actions can be revealing. In this case, it teaches us about the tangled collision of gender norms with service industry expectations.

We have to reckon with the troubling reality that what we fear most in AI is that it will either reflect the worst of us, or fight back against us because we know what we expect of it is morally wrong. It is a guilt-ridden memory of a future where we live out a fantasy of women’s servitude en masse, with ideal womanhood positioned as being ever more robot-like. In order to face that fear, we have to recognize what we are currently trying to build: a servile woman who doesn’t talk back, a female robota who embodies the most dehumanizing aspects of both societal sexism and capitalist urges.

Looked at that way, it gives a whole new meaning to the phrase “robot uprising.”

How Gotham Is Empowering Women by Casting a Female for a Formerly Male Superhero Role

Just when you thought that superhero shows were totally by the (comic) book, Gotham went ahead and flipped that idea on its head. How so? Instead of casting a male actor to play the role…

Satirical Video Highlights How White And Male Dominated Hollywood Truly Is

These days, it’s easier than ever to make a blockbuster film, according to filmmaker Patrick Willems. That is, if you’re a white male.

Willems, who is a white man, offers step-by-step video to becoming a star director in the video above. Prerequisites include passing a “white male check” and exploiting a “tortured” screenwriter in film school to write scripts. And when it’s time to make an indie film, the narrator reminds us, ”Just make sure it appeals to white people and includes the key ingredients: a heterosexual romance and a genre movie element.”

Then, as proposed in the video, wait for a call from Hollywood and voila! You’re in the big leagues.

As for women, people of color and other marginalized communities,  landing these big positions in Hollywood is far more difficult. UCLA’s Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies report points out just a few reasons why in its 2015 Diversity in Hollywood report

“Because of the high risk associated with the typical project — most new television shows fail, most films underperform — individual stakeholders in the industry (typically white and male) look to surround themselves with other individuals with whom they feel comfortable, with whom they feel they have the best prospects for producing a successful project,” the authors of the report wrote. “These latter individuals, of course, tend to think and look like the former, thereby reproducing an industry culture that routinely devalues the talent of minorities and women.”

Though diversity has seen a few victories in Hollywood lately, the 5-step model in this satirical video still, sadly, the most effective method.

Found: This Is Where All the Male Plus-Size Models Are

The conversation surrounding plus-size models has been going at a mile a minute as of late—think Melissa McCarthy’s comments about getting plus-size clothing displayed in stores more prominently and top models like Amber Tolliver saying “clothing options shouldn’t be different for curvy women.” Yet until very recently, it’s been all about women. Most agencies include divisions specially for the category and are supporting an industry that’s beginning to cast curvy beauties in mainstream campaigns. While it certainly all seems like progress, there’s an interesting catch: just where are all the male plus-size models?

The answer would appear to be Germany! It’s where there are multiple agencies with special categories (and the majority of the men are busy working).

A model in Ralph Lauren’s Big & Tall line

“The market seems to be different in Germany,” Curve Model Management owner Mona Schulze told The Guardian. “Customers want to be able to identify with the models, they want them to mirror them.”

Men need to be around a size 42 to be considered plus, though that’s not a term that the agency endorses. Schulze says she scouts a lot on the street since men aren’t as likely as women to pop in for consideration; when she sees a guy with potential, she uses terms like “standard” and “everyman” to discuss his build.

Billy Reid’s spring 2015 runway shows what the typical male runway model looks like

A check of the top agencies in the United States doesn’t reveal any plus-size category for men. Fitness categories include males who are beefier than runway models but still appear super in shape. Jermain Hollman, 6’5 with a 36-inch waist, is considered plus-size but, hello—he’s got some serious abs going on in his Facebook profile pic. Thirty-two inches is the average waist size for working male models, and while those in the biz say they haven’t seen things in the past, there’s hope that the positive attention being shined on women’s plus-size divisions will affect men as well.

I Transitioned From Female to Male as a Teen. Here’s My Story

Lots of people are confused by me. First I was a girl who liked girls, and then a boy who liked girls, and now—finally—a dude who likes other dudes. I get it—it is kind of confusing. The best way I’ve heard it explained: Gender is who you want to sleep as, and sexuality is who you want to sleep with. It took me some time to figure out that last part.

Women Take On Body Censorship With Help From Male Nipples And Photoshop

Male nipples are having a moment, and it’s surprisingly all in the name of freeing the female body from censorship.

Last June, artist Micol Hebron posted an image of a male nipple on Facebook and suggested that women replace their nipples with the template to make them acceptable for social media.

TBT to that time, over a year ago (June 2014) that I posted an image of male nipple and told everyone to put it over…

Posted by Micol Hebron on Friday, July 3, 2015

The idea recently began to recirculate across social media, and women are using Photoshop to cover their bare breasts with male nipples. Though some photo-sharing platforms routinely remove women’s images in which their nipples are exposed, men’s topless photos are fair game.

Which provides an obvious solution:

The Free The Nipple movement, a campaign focused on the general censorship of women’s nipples, also urged women to upload images and replace their offending lady areolae with virtual male nipple stickers. Free The Nipple advocates for equal rights for men and women as well as the right to comfortably breastfeed in public. It spreads its mission through social media and a film (aptly titled “Free The Nipple”) that “follows a group of young women who take to the streets of New York City topless, to protest the archaic censorship laws in the United States.”

Singer Courtney Love shared her support for the campaign with an Instagram post recalling Hebron’s idea and challenging the photo-sharing platform’s guidelines.

‘Chronic’ at Cannes: Tim Roth As a Depressed Male Hospice Nurse

Tim Roth gives an outstanding performance in Michel Franco’s new film Chronic, which just premiered at Cannes, as a male nurse who bizarrely goes beyond the call of duty to care for his dying patients. The film follows him as he takes care first of one patient (until the funeral), and then another — and then another — each time scrupulously washing the patient’s back, with dedicated strokes, or encouraging him or her to speak about their lives. The nurse even goes so far as to buy an architecture book for one of his crotchety patients (an architect), and to visit one of the homes he designed. What is odd is that his care for his patients is absolutely deadpan — and he, for an unfathomable reason, deeply depressed.

Tim Roth in person — whom I saw joking at poolside with a hotel woman who called to him from her balcony — is quite opposite from the role he plays. Lively, funny (“I love you too!” he called up to the woman at the balcony) and jocular. In the film, he is brooding, with his body tensed up like that of a former high school wrestler, who never got out of the pose. At the press conference, in fact, the actor remarked that: “For this role, I stripped myself bare. I played the nurse very quiet. I didn’t want to distract from him, so I tried to keep myself low.”

2015-05-23-1432413661-4729561-zRothpressconference.jpg

Chronic is a riveting film — because of Roth — and may very well win an award tomorrow night. But it is tough to watch, just as it is tough to be at the hospital bedside of a patient in chronic pain (one after another). There is no joy in the movie, and very little warmth. The other characters in the film (mostly family members of the patients) have little affect: Perhaps because they are dealing with a loved one’s chronic illness (as the director noted at the press conference), but more likely because the director has chosen to put the spotlight on how estranged we human beings are from each other. The nurse, in his strange dense way, is the most “human” character. The others, in contrast, seem cold, rushed, or indifferent, and speak to each other in monotone.

A sense of mystery is what propels the story: Something traumatic happened in this nurse’s past that spurs him in his overzealous activity. The mystery works: We are gripped to the “cold” story before us, one that (plot spoiler) ends up as icy as it begins.

I went to meet the young Mexican director, Michel Franco, to ask him why he created such a disturbingly bleak universe.

Why did you make a film in which humans seem not to care about each other? Is this how you see people?

I should not be very pessimistic as in my personal life I am lucky with my friends and family. My family came all the way from Mexico to be here with me. Nevertheless, I am intrigued by how we can be well-educated and civilized, and still have trouble communicating. Humans are complicated; we always make mistakes with each other. It is the same pessimistic view that you will find in my other films.

Almost all of the relationships in the film are cold, except for the one at the end, with Tim Roth and the cancer patient “Martha.” Can you comment on Martha?

Oh yes, Martha. It’s true they end up being close. Still, I don’t know if Martha is manipulating him. We don’t know if from the very beginning, she is trying to manipulate him.

Really! I didn’t see her this way.

It’s not clear. I will have to see it again and tell you what I think of Martha. Every time I see the film I think differently about Martha. I am suspicious of people’s motives. We all have our worries, and our minds are complicated, and even if we love each other, we harm each other…

Some viewers will be disappointed that this film has no arc of triumph, no evolution. In a conventional film, a protagonist who begins a film depressed will evolve and, by film’s end, have a surprising realization or recovery.

My film is close to real life, in that life rarely has that arc where everything changes and is better at the end. I like movies that do not solve the conflict, because when the conflict is solved, it satisfies the spectator and all is finished, forgotten in an hour. But if the conflict is not solved, like in my film, you are forced to keep thinking about it. Usually in a film, the audience is told from the beginning: Be prepared for the final [triumphant] end. I just shot my film in a way I like: subtle. I don’t give things to the audience. I feel like the audience is tired with being disrespected.

You say life has no arcs. Do you really believe that?

When my professional life is going well, I am happy, and then I am down again. Yes, I have those kinds of professional arcs.

What about non-professional arcs? How about going through an emotional upset or loss, and then changing through it, or achieving some kind of resolution? This is a way many people approach tragedies…

I would say no, that does not happen. Most things you have to accept them and move on, if they are really bad. You don’t change them and it is better to accept and move on. These people who believe in change are in therapy for ten years or always reading a book about how to be happy, but then they fall into another problem. I am more simple. As long as there is no trouble in my life, I focus on work.

I am going to guess that you are an atheist: and think there is nothing after death.

Right. I do think there is nothing after life. Death is scary. It is a horrible thought, pessimistic, but it is good to embrace that thought because if you accept it, it makes you make the most of your life.

One critique of your film: The father/daughter relationship is not quite believable. The Tim Roth character sees his daughter after many years of absence, and she just casually welcomes him back with a, “Nice to see you!”

True, but I wanted to make the father-daughter story as small as possible. With the daughter, I just wanted to make a point that the nurse is welcomed back easily by his [estranged] family, so even that cannot explain his depression. The real problem for him is that he cannot cope with life; it’s not a matter of external factors.

Where did you get the idea for your story?

My grandmother got sick in 2010, and she was tied to a bed for several months before she passed away. I was very moved by the angel who took care of her. I asked this nurse, Beatrice, how many years she had been doing this! The work kept her down. She was depressed. Yet, she said she liked her work. She was always thinking about her patients. Nurses are close to certain matters that we try to escape; they are brave and they do it. My film is a character study.

The reason I chose to make it a male nurse is because of Tim Roth. I won the Certain Regard with my film After Lucia a couple years ago [2012]. Tim Roth was on the jury. He came up to me after the awards ceremony and said, “Let’s work together!” I told him I was making a film about a nurse and he said, “If you make her a male, I’ll be that nurse!” And so I did.

Does the fact that you are from Mexico — a very unsettled place right now — influence your filmmaking and choice of subjects?

Mexico has always been a very complicated society, not just now. It is a really troubled country [with corruption etc.] which is why we have good film directors — which is why Greece has interesting film directors now. I like chaos. My first movie really comes out of that Mexican context; my second film has some of it. The third was shot in the streets of Mexico, with homeless people. My beginnings were tied to Mexican reality, but now I am growing out of it, and becoming more personal.

You are a Jewish Mexican, and as you tell me, your mother is Israeli. Do you feel connected to your Jewish roots?

Culturally, I do (laughs.) Perhaps I have some of the pessimism.

8 Dead White Male Artists You Should Know

men

Throughout the history of art, many brave and creative spirits have exposed their souls, their imaginations and their ideas about the world through the power of visual expression. Today, we’re honoring eight individuals whose artistic expression has transformed the conversation surrounding representation, the role of the artist, the relationship between figuration and abstraction, and the power of art. The most inspirational part is, they managed to explore these issues and more, as white men.

Behold, eight dead, white, male artists who blow us away with their talent as well as their modesty.***

1. Claude Monet (1840-1926)
“My life has been nothing but a failure.”

monet

The work of French painter Claude Monet (pronounced Mo-Nay) isknown for his paintings of water lilies in the idyllic gardens of Giverny. Sadly, his work remains confined to institutions like the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Musée d’Orsay, and sells for millions of dollars. IMHO, those canvases are whimsical enough to warrant billion dollar price tags.

2. Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519)
“I have offended God and mankind because my work didn’t reach the quality it should have.”

da

Leonardo has been dubbed a “genius,” as well as the “Renaissance humanist ideal.” There are forums dedicated to whether or not he was the most talented person that has ever lived. One of his most celebrated paintings, the “Mona Lisa,” is likely the most famous portrait of all time, but it’s also the most parodied, and sometimes that stuff gets mean spirited.

3. Henri Matisse (1869-1954)
“It has bothered me all my life that I do not paint like everybody else.”

henri matisse

Matisse (pronounced Muh-Tees) is known as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, as well as the leader of the Fauvists, French for “wild beasts,” a group of artists who privileged intense and unnatural color, sometimes straight from the tube. In 2005 one of his pieces sold for $ 25 million to the Museum of Modern Art. It’s not even one of the super famous ones.

4. Édouard Manet (1832-1883)
“This woman’s work is exceptional. Too bad she’s not a man.”

m

In the mid-19th century, Manet (pronounced Man-ehh?) painted provocative artworks such as “The Luncheon on the Grass,” and “Olympia,” both radical for their use of a nude subject staring straight at the viewer without shame. Some say his career sparked the beginning of modern art. Also, his name sounds a lot like Monet (see #1 on list) who is slightly more famous, which, we can only imagine, must have been frustrating.

5. Michelangelo (1475-1564)
“If people knew how hard I worked to get my mastery, it wouldn’t seem so wonderful at all.”

portrait

The Encyclopedia Britannica subtly states: “Michelangelo was considered the greatest living artist in his lifetime, and ever since then he has been held to be one of the greatest artists of all time.” He’s responsible for works like the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel and the “Pietà,” and yet we’re still left wondering: but who is Michelangelo?

6. Pablo Picasso (1881–1973)
“My mother said to me, ‘If you are a soldier, you will become a general. If you are a monk, you will become the Pope.’ Instead, I was a painter, and became Picasso.”

picasso photo

As Norman Mailer once put it: “By general consensus, Pablo Picasso is the most brilliant and influential artist of this century.” Among other things, he co-founded Cubism, invented constructed sculpture and helped popularize collage. Sadly, however, many individuals still hurl disparaging comments at him, like “my five-year-old could do that.”

7. Paul Gauguin (1848-1903)
“We never really know what stupidity is until we have experimented on ourselves.”

gaug

Gauguin (pronounced Go-gan) is a key figure in Symbolist, Post-Impressionist and Primitivist art. He’s also, perhaps less widely, known as the former stockbroker who left his wife and five children to embark on a hunt to “discover the primitive.” In other words, he moved to Tahiti and took adolescent girls for wives. Get this guy a reality show!

8. Edgar Degas (1834-1917)
“Painting is easy when you don’t know how, but very difficult when you do.”

degas

Degas (pronounced Day-gah) is known for his weightless depictions of ballerinas in motion, combining on-stage performances with awkward behind-the-scenes moments. He’s also known as one of the founders of Impressionism. His bronze sculpture creepily titled “Little Dancer of Fourteen Years” was estimated to draw between $ 25 million and $ 35 million during a Christie’s auction in 2009. There were no bids. It did not sell.
