Here Are Some Of The Most Awesome Signs From The March For Science

Thousands of people gathered in hundreds of cities Saturday to show their support for science and demand evidence-based policy in the wake of President Donald Trump’s anti-science agenda.

The March for Science, a series of rallies around the world, took place on Earth Day to highlight the need to fight the devastation that Trump’s environmental policies would inflict on the planet.

And of course, all those science lovers came with pretty great signs. Here are some of the best, cleverest and most poignant signs we’ve seen so far.

Hillary Clinton Applauds March For Science

Former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton praised the thousands of demonstrators who protested against President Donald Trump’s anti-science agenda on Saturday and urged people to “protect the Earth and all its beauty.”

“It is Earth Day, and we are marching on behalf of science,” Clinton said to applause during a surprise appearance at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York on Saturday evening. “Part of science is understanding the intricate relationships we share with those on this planet.”

Saturday’s nationwide March for Science, coinciding with Earth Day, came just three months after the massive Women’s March on Jan. 21, the day after Trump’s inauguration.

Earlier on Saturday, Clinton affirmed her support for the marches, tweeting “March on!”

Clinton attended the festival as an unannounced panelist at the premiere of “The Protectors: Walk in the Rangers’ Shoes,” a virtual reality documentary about elephant poaching that was co-created by Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow.

The film, which National Geographic will release online next month, documents park rangers in the Congo combating the environmental crisis caused by elephant poaching, an issue Clinton worked on as secretary of state.

“It became clear to everyone that this was not just a terrible crisis when it came to the elephant population; it was a trade, a trafficking that was funding a lot of bad folks, a lot of bad actors,” Clinton said. “It was being used to take ivory and sell it in order to buy more weapons, and support the kind of terroristic activity that these and other groups were engaged in.”

Clinton has kept a relatively low profile since November’s election, but has attended plays and other cultural events in New York and spoken at events related to issues she champions, such as LGBTQ rights and women’s rights.

The former secretary of state’s appearance at the festival was kept tightly under wraps. Bigelow, who moderated the panel, said even she didn’t know that Clinton would be there.

“I had nothing to do with her being here,” Bigelow told The Wrap. “This was all the festival’s doing. But I know she’s been doing great work in this field for years, and she’s a woman of extraordinary power.”

Blake Lively Explains The Touching Reason She Joined The Women’s March

On Saturday, celebrities joined Women’s Marches around the world, walking in solidarity with millions of people standing up for women’s rights.

Among those celebrities was Blake Lively, who attended the massive event in New York City. The former “Gossip Girl” star shared a photo from the march on Instagram, in which she’s seen posing with a fellow marcher ― a young girl named Pheobe, who holds a sign that reads, “Make American Kind Again.”

In her caption, Lively explained the heartfelt reason she decided to attend the historic event.

“I marched for my daughters, for my friends, for strangers, for myself, for Phoebe here in this picture who I met as she motivated everyone she came across,” she wrote. “My march wasn’t driven by hate. It was rooted in a very simple fact― we are all equal. I believe everyone can agree on that. Thank you to everyone who marched all over the world. I felt so hopeful and deeply grateful.”

During the march, Lively also met up with her “Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” co-star Amber Tamblyn, who marched in both Washington and New York.

Steve Buscemi Brings A ‘Big Lebowski’ Moment To Women’s March

Steve Buscemi thinks this aggression will not stand, man.

On Saturday, a day after the inauguration of President Donald Trump, hundreds of thousands of people turned up in Washington, D.C. in support of The 2017 Women’s March, a political rally for women’s rights and in protest of the newly inaugurated president.

Many celebrities and activists gave speeches, and estimates say there were more than 2 million participants worldwide. Through it all, “Big Lebowski” actor Steve Buscemi somehow found this guy:

Out of all the craziness, the 59-year-old actor came across a guy—no, a Dude— with a sign echoing some of the most famous “Big Lebowski” lines.

“Shut the fuck up Donny you’re out of your element,” it read.

In the Coen brothers’ classic, John Goodman’s character Walter Shoback famously says the lines to Buscemi’s character, Donny. Here, the sign is clearly directed at President Donny Trump, but in both cases, it really just ties the room together.

The Dude abides.

Chelsea Handler Leads Women’s March at Sundance With Kristen Stewart

“We stay away from politics,” Sundance Film Festival founder Robert Redford recently told journalists during a press conference in Park City, UT. Maybe so, but that didn’t stop stars like Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron, John Legend, Laura Dern, Maria Bello, Joshua Jackson, Connie Britton, Jurnee Smollett, Laura Prepon, Benjamin Bratt and approximately 8,000 other people from turning out at the Women’s March on Main which was held on Saturday morning in the snowy Old Town Park City in conjunction with the Women’s March on Washington, D.C. and other cities around the country.
Comedian Chelsea Handler, a member of the event organizing committee, led the march, which began in the Wasatch Brew Pub parking lot and ended a few blocks away with a rally in the Flagpole parking lot.

“Do we have to go around that way?” Theron asked an event organizer while finding her way.
When asked why it was important to her to attend, Stewart let the “I Stand with Planned Parenthood” sign she was holding do the talking for her. “Oh no, I’m not doing interviews right now, but it’s nice to see you,” she said.

Miley Cyrus, Jane Fonda, Natalie Portman and Vanessa Hudgens at Women’s March in L.A.

While various versions of the Women’s March took place in more than 60 countries around the world, Los Angeles gave its own twist as the nexus of Hollywood, fashion and progressive politics.
Miley Cyrus merged her dedication to the Happy Hippie Foundation and Planned Parenthood with a hologram poster that reflected her HH-logoed sunglasses and leggings. Ke$ ha marched for animal rights. Jamie Lee Curtis showed solidarity with Jane Fonda by standing next to the Oscar winner with a sign that read: “What she said.” Vanessa Hudgens brought along her younger sister, Stella, while Natalie Portman came with her baby bump and a heart-shaped balloon alongside her husband, Benjamin Millepied.
Other activist actresses included Barbra Streisand, Jessica Biel, Kerry Washington, Mandy Moore, Alfre Woodward, Idina Menzel, Marcia Gay Harden, Helen Hunt, Jennifer Morrison, Lana Parrilla, Rosanna Arquette, Juliette Lewis and Camryn Manheim. Among the men in the crowd were U2’s the Edge, Matt McGorry, Moby, George Kotsiopoulos and Shepard Fairey, who not only made some of the most popular posters carried by attendees but also spun tunes.
Before the march started Saturday morning, attendance was expected to reach almost 100,000. Organizers pegged the actual number at 750,000. Under a squadron of buzzing helicopters, the dense

Hope Permeates Sundance As Celebrities Join Thousands For Women’s March

“Hello, all you pussies,” Mario Bello exclaimed as she took the microphone at the Sundance Film Festival’s women’s march on Saturday. An already spirited crowd swelled at her invocation.

Miles from Washington, where a gargantuan protest was unfolding, snow covered the ground but fire filled the air. Thousands of festivalgoers and Park City locals took a break from seeing movies to storm Sundance’s downtown hub in solidarity with nationwide demonstrations. Traffic delays stalled movement throughout the Utah town, but bright spirits prevailed.

Protesters ambling down Main Street waved signs, banged drums and chanted the refrain of Bob Marley’s “Get Up, Stand Up” in the name of equality. At one point, a woman behind me proclaimed to her companion, “I feel so united with everyone. I feel like smiling. I feel so happy.”

Sundance is, of course, a watering hole for movie stars, and Hollywood made a grand showing at the march. Chelsea Hander led the rally, which was independent of the festival’s organizers, and was joined by the likes of Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron, Laura Dern, Jessica Williams, Connie Britton, Benjamin Bratt, Kevin Bacon, John Legend, Aisha Tyler, Jennifer Beals and Joshua Jackson.

“This isn’t 1917 ― this is 2017,” Handler said in her speech. “We shouldn’t have to fight for progress we’ve already made, but we’re ready to. It’s our duty to take care of the next generation and to ensure that our children have the same access to the essential services that we all did.”

Meryl Streep was there in spirit: Festival director John Cooper was among many sporting “I’M WITH MERYL” stickers, and the crowd went wild when Bello said Streep’s political Golden Globe speech helped her out of her post-election stupor.

But for such a star-studded gathering, celebrities were hardly the morning’s highlight. There was a widespread sense of community as protesters huddled together, the Park City mountains providing a picturesque backdrop. Volunteers handed out bagels and miniature American flags. Strangers offered one another help through the slush and snow. Even a few dogs attended the event, including one wearing a sign that read “STRONGER TOGETHER.”

The most surprising element? Humor. As speakers urged protesters to fight for human rights, the crowd was moved to laughter again and again. It was a two-hour church service for the worried, with hopeful benedictions all around.

“My ancestors were slaves,” Williams said while addressing the congregation. “Williams is my last name, but it is not my real name ― it is my slave name. I am my ancestors’ dream. They fought for me to be able to stand up here in the cold-ass snow in front of a bunch of white people wearing UGGs.”

As I left the march to catch a movie, stragglers holding signs wandered through the streets nearby. People joked and carried on, seemingly encouraged that the conviviality they felt would result in continued resistance. As the day continued, the good mood seemed to cover Park City and provide a welcome, if temporary, reprieve from the festival’s dour aura on the eve of President Donald Trump’s inauguration.

14 Signs From The Women’s March To Honor Roe v. Wade’s 44th Anniversary

WASHINGTON, D.C. ― The Women’s March on Washington (and the hundreds of sister marches around the nation and world) took place the day before the 44th anniversary of Roe v. Wade

Many D.C. marchers proudly held signs calling for affordable and accessible reproductive healthcare for women. From the age-old rallying cry of “My body, my choice,” to more creative slogans such as “Leave your rosaries off my ovaries,” each sign was an important reminder of the positive impact Roe v. What We Saw At The Women’s March On Washington

WASHINGTON, D.C. ― “This is what democracy looks like,” chanted men, women and children as they marched down Constitution Ave. on Saturday Jan. 21. If democracy looks like the Women’s March on Washington, it looks energized, creative, diverse, joyous and ready to fight like hell for equality.

Diamond District steps up with ‘March on Washington’

A striking return to form, March on Washington puts Diamond District back on the map as one of the most vital voices in hip hop today. Their 2010 debut In The Ruff garnered fans worldwide as well as caught critics’s attention, leading to the shortlist for a Grammy. With March on Washington, Diamond District again conquers their goal of revitalizing a golden era of rap based in their unique local flavor.

Diamond District in itself an ingenious arrangement, a hip hop trio out of the Washington, D.C., area that is comprised of where the District, Maryland, and Virginia communities converge. Prolific producer Oddisee, a Muslim of Sudanese descent growing up in the Maryland suburbs, got the idea to bring together a different voice from each part of the DMV. Uptown XO, from more notorious parts of the District, has a strident, charismatic voice; yU hews his Virginia drawl to his flow with infectious precision. Oddisee, well over 6 feet, has the deepest voice, which he knows how to use with drama and urgency. Listening to their distinct voices jump in is itself a one of a kind musical arrangement.

2014-10-10-diamonddistrict04_large.jpg

The group takes its name from the shape of D.C. on a map, which resembles a diamond shape, with the White House in the center. The District itself represents an ongoing disenfranchisement of its residents, who still have no direct elected representation: the U.S. Congress supposedly administers municipal necessities, while refusing to even do the job they were elected to do, while District residents can only dream of statehood, like an occupied territory.

Oddisee works producing beats largely off a laptop, with musical guests as he sees fit for his project. He has thrived in reinventing himself for different projects based on the region, from his work with Arkansas rapper Stick Figa to his nostalgic retro instrumentals on Rock Creek Park, the scenic expanse in the heart of D.C. But with Diamond District Oddisee was able to rely on elements of music to sample from and build around that was indigenous to D.C., the go-go music from the early 80’s. D.C. has influenced the music scene nationally before, like with its thriving hard core scene, but these go-go hooks fit so naturally with the signature boom bap beats, this outing reflects a suffusion of talent and artistic support that reaffirms the DMV as a hub of talent.

In March on Washington, the lyrics are as fiercely political as you’d expect, searing with timely context in images of a police state running amok with a license to kill. The soulful grooves are like vibrant orchestras from a different time. Oddisee takes his time achieving the sound he wants, and what started years ago as a D.C. answer to Black Star is now confident and purposeful, striving for a classic stature. March on Washington might well prove to be their breakthrough to new fans and hip hop heads alike.

March on Washington comes out October 14 from Mello Music Group.

Must See Painting Shows: March 2014

So I got a little carried away this month. There are so many strong shows around the country that this month’s must see list contains twenty-eight exhibtitons, and I could have easily added more.

It is a big week in the New York art world as multiple art fairs come to town, including The Armory Show, VOLTA and The ADAA Art Show, and the 2014 installment of the Whitney Biennial opens. Art dealers know an opportunity when they see one, so don’t be surprised to see a number of Biennial artists well represented in the various art fairs. I want to congratulate two New American Paintings’ alumni, past cover artist Keith Mayerson and Chicago-based Molly Zuckerman-Hartung, on their inclusion in this very painter friendly Biennial. Both are also currently featured in commercial gallery shows at Derek Eller Gallery in New York City and Corbett vs. Dempsey In Chicago, respectively.

There are close to three-dozen NAP alumni on view around the country. In Los Angeles, Ben Weiner continues to impress with his painterly chops. His just opened show at Mark Moore Gallery includes stunning examples of his large-scale photorealist/abstract images, as well as a new series of small-scale works made with some interesting materials. Right nearby in Culver City are Brian Porray’s show at Western Project, and a soon-to-open solo of work by 2013 MFA Annual artist and Yale grad, Evan Nesbit. Four extremely talented LA-based NAP alumni are currently having solo shows in New York City, including Lisa Sanditz at CRG Gallery, Iva Gueorguieva at Ameringer|McEnery|Yohe, Sarah Cain at Galerie Lelong, and the young and already in demand Brenna Youngblood at Tilton Gallery (Youngblood will be the focus of an exhibition at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis later this year).

Some months seem to favor mid-career and established artists, but emerging talent is on view everywhere in March. In Chicago, William J. O’Brien, who works in a range of media – from ceramics to painting – opens a show of new work at Shane Campbell Gallery (the artist is currently having his first comprehensive museum survey at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago). In San Francisco, Altman Sigel is presenting the delicate paintings of the Japanese artist, Shinpei Kusanagi. In Minneapolis, the young and on-the-move David Petersen Gallery is exhibiting new paintings by hometown emerging artist, Scott Nedrelow.

I don’t even know where to begin with New York City. Shows by emerging artists that I am excited about include: Ethan Cook at American Contemporary, Jordan Kantor at Churner and Churner, Mika Tajima at Eleven Rivington, Gabriel Hartley at Foxy Production, Liam Everett at On Stellar Rays, Donelle Woolford at Wallspace, and Ned Vena at Real Fine Arts in Brooklyn. One of our favorites at NAP, Summer Wheat, opens a show at the Lower East Side space, Pocket Utopia, on March 16th, and will also be the focus of a solo booth presentation with Samson at the Nada New York art fair in May.

New American Paintings magazine is a juried exhibition-in-print, and the largest series of artist competitions in the United States. Working with experienced curators, New American Paintings reviews the work of thousands of emerging artists each year. Forty artists are selected to appear in each bi-monthly edition, many of whom go on to receive substantial critical and commercial success. Additional content focuses on the medium of painting, those who influence its direction, and the role contemporary painting plays within the art world.
