The Met’s ‘Heavenly Bodies’ Exhibit Has Record-Breaking 1.3M Visitors With 10 Days to Go

THE MET’S SUNDAY BEST: Last-minute museum-goers still have 10 days to catch the record-breaking “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Fifth Avenue location and The Met Cloisters.
With 1.3 million visitors at the Upper East Side museum and nearly 200,000 at The Met Cloisters — and counting — the show is the most-visited one for The Met’s Costume Institute. Spanning 60,000 square feet and 25 galleries, the exhibition is the largest that has ever been staged. A myriad of designs from Thierry Mugler, Cristóbal Balenciaga, Thom Browne, Azzedine Alaïa, John Galliano for the House of Dior, Claire McCardell, Madeleine Vionnet, Isabel Toledo, Pierpaolo Piccioli for Valentino, Elsa Schiaparelli and other designers are on view throughout the Met. The layout inevitably is leading many attendees to areas of the museum beyond the Costume Institute. On the flip side, visitors who may be in search of non-fashion exhibitions may be introduced and perhaps tempted to explore more in The Costume Institute.
The success of the exhibition has been another winning moment for The Costume Institute’s curator in charge Andrew Bolton, who has helped to rev up attendance numbers in recent years. “Heavenly Bodies” appears to be closing

The Met’s Costume Institute Said Eyeing Fashion and Religion for Next Year’s Exhibition

KEEPING THE FAITH: In these politically charged times, it appears that the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute isn’t afraid to take on its own controversial topics.
Fashion and religion will be the theme of next year’s major exhibition, according to multiple sources, including a few who said they have been privy to preliminary discussions. A Met spokeswoman declined to comment Friday.
With the May opening still many months away, the planning is still in the very early stages. Sources describe the project as serious and ambitious, and it is understood the idea was hatched long before the current “Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: The Art of the In-Between” show, slated to close Sept. 4. A host of European designers have referenced religion in their collections, including the likes of Jean Paul Gaultier, John Galliano and Riccardo Tisci. The likeness of the Madonna has been appropriated by Dolce & Gabbana, and the iconography of Jesus has been featured in Jeremy Scott’s collection. Prabal Gurung once brought Buddhist monks to his runway.
In recent years, the Costume Institute exhibitions have been major blockbusters for The Met. Last year’s “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology” attracted 752,995 visitors, making it the museum’s seventh

Start Your Day with a ‘classic’ experience–The Met’s ‘Museum Workout’

2017-01-18-1484767002-8715148-Museum_Workout_MetMuseum_Paula_Lobo8727copy.jpg

By Miles Harter, ZEALnyc Contributing Writer, January 23, 2017

Who wouldn’t want to start their day frolicking around the Metropolitan Museum of Art before opening hours to such lively standards as “Staying Alive” and “Dance to the Music,” all the while taking in the Met’s beautiful spaces and magnificent works of art?

The MetLiveArts has commissioned a new work entitled, The Museum Workout, whereby participants are able to exercise within the confines of the museum while also experiencing all the splendid art throughout. The routine is both physical and interactive, and is led by two enthusiastic and athletic dancers, choreographer Monica Bill Barnes and dance partner Anna Bass, both wearing elegant brown and gold sequined dresses with matching New Balance workout shoes. At the session I attended, the engaging dancers introduced themselves, told us about the program, and instructed everyone to follow their moves closely.

Leading the group of about twenty through a workout to the memorable tunes of such fabulous artists as the Bee Gees and Lionel Richie, Robert Saenz de Viteri (creative producing director of Monica Bill Barnes & Company) followed us around with a laptop broadcasting the selected soundtrack to our workout, which included jogging, brisk walking, and dancing. For brief intervals, we stopped before classic sculptures and lovely paintings, and were led in stationary calisthenics. At one point, moving forward during the exquisite “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart,” it was as if we had turned into the Von Trapp children (sans the play clothes made from drapes) from The Sound of Music as they sang “Do Re Mi,” biking and dancing through Salzburg. We all became the stars of this “performance art” piece. At various stops throughout the museum, we heard the recorded voice of another collaborator of the work, writer/illustrator Maira Kalman, offering her thoughts about the Met and perspective of the experience.

The actual workout consists of a two-mile walk/jog/dance, lasting 45 minutes, and leading the participant through various wings and exhibits of the museum. Both Monica and Anna moved gracefully, and as we followed their motions, we received the full benefit of a workout. As a certified personal trainer and endurance athlete accustomed to running the 6.1 mile loop around Central Park, I was cheerfully surprised by this light cardiovascular interval workout. Especially gratifying were the arm routines, as we frequently moved our arms in harmony with Monica and Anna’s maneuvers. The interactive workout concludes in The Charles Engelhard Court, offering an expansive view of Central Park and its joggers. Although it was a beautiful morning outside, this was one time I was glad to be having my workout inside the museum.

The Museum Workout takes place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1000 Fifth Avenue, Thursdays – Sundays through February 12; sessions begin at 8:30am. For more information and to buy tickets click here.

The Met’s Costume Institute Breaks Attendance Record With ‘China: Through the Looking Glass’

FOR THE RECORD: The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute has turned up its own summer blockbuster. Over the weekend, “China: Through the Looking Glass” shattered the record-breaking attendance figures for the 2011 exhibition “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty.” As of Sunday afternoon, the Andrew Bolton-curated China show had attracted 671,234 visitors, making it The Costume Institute’s most attended exhibition ever. With three weeks to go until its Labor Day closing, the China exhibition may still gain ground on the Met’s other Top 10 visited exhibitions. The McQueen one ranked eighth with 661,509 visitors.
Given “China: Through the Looking Glass’” cross-cultural appeal – designers from around the globe are represented – it is not surprising that museum-goers speaking a variety of languages can be heard in the show’s 16 different galleries. Creative input from artistic director Wong Kar Wai is artistic director and production designer Nathan Crowley no doubt helped drum up interest. The Met is also favorite stop for many of the city’s estimated 55 million annual visitors. For fiscal year 2015 that ended June 30, The Met welcomed 6.3 people, according to a museum spokeswoman. And unlike the McQueen show, which often left many biding their time in line in

The Met’s Costume Institute Is Now The Anna Wintour Costume Center (Yes, Really)

In case you had any question as to who runs the American fashion industry…

The Metropolitan Museum of Art announced on Tuesday that it has officially renamed the museum space occupied by The Costume Institute, its fashion and costume history wing, the Anna Wintour Costume Center. No, we’re not kidding. Women’s Wear Daily reports that the expanded space will include the current Costume Institute exhibition galleries, plus a library, conservation laboratory and “research areas.” (The curatorial department will still be called The Costume Institute.)

Those have also been named in honor of major Met supporters, including the Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch Gallery and the Carl and Iris Barrel Apfel Gallery. But we all know who really runs the show around those parts.

Wintour has been a highly visible supporter of the Met’s fashion wing for years, most famously through her annual fundraising blowout, the Met Gala. (WWD reports her efforts have raised about $ 125 million for The Costume Institute over the past 20 years.) The gala has become the most anticipated and well-attended social event of the year in New York City, jokingly called “the Oscars of fashion” (but let’s be honest, the Met Gala has an even better guest list — think the Oscars’ celebs plus every designer and model in the biz).

Now Anna’s imprint will be even more prominent. The Met’s director and chief executive officer, Thomas Campbell, tells WWD, “When you walk into The Costume Institute… you will see ‘Anna Wintour Costume Center’ in bold, bold letters above the staircase.” You can see the big change come May 8, when the Costume Institute’s annual exhibit is unveiled. The theme this year is “Charles James: Beyond Fashion” — but we have a feeling Charles James might be a little overshadowed by a slightly more famous industry name.

Anna’s party is the only one worth going to:
