Brands to Ride Wave of Strong Demand at Miami Swim Week

MIAMI — As the retail sector reels, swimwear is sitting pretty. It’s just the good news that vendors and buyers want to hear as they head to the annual Miami Swim Week, whose three trade shows — SwimShow, Hammock and Cabana — begin July 22.
Neck-and-neck with outerwear and ath-leisure for healthy sales, swimwear is one of the few categories still registering growth, according to The NPD Group Inc. The market research firm reported U.S. swimwear sales totaled $ 5 billion from the beginning of June 2016 through the end of May 2017, a 10 percent increase on the same period during the previous year. Innovative fit and fabrics, the wellness movement, and being an early, natural adapter to e-commerce are factors buoying the category when much of the apparel industry is sinking.
“The definitive message on the street is that swimwear is an unstoppable force,” said SwimShow director Judy Stein, of beach-to-boardwalk styles having reached critical mass popularity. “This trend has fueled both start-ups and established brands.”
Marshal Cohen, chief industry analyst for The NPD Group, further cited comfort, durability and improved sizing as reasons consumers feel confident in purchasing swimwear compared to sportswear with its fussier fits and come-and-go trends.
“There’s a 98 percent confidence

Max Mara Awards High School Photographer at Miami Event

“I take my camera everywhere I go,” said Torrance Hall, a high school senior from Richmond, Va., who received the second annual Max Mara Young Visionary Award through the Italian fashion house’s ongoing partnership with the National YoungArts Foundation headquartered in Miami.
The budding photographer slung a Canon EOS Rebel T3i over his shoulder during the ceremony and reception for an exhibit of his works for sale at Max Mara’s store in the Miami Design District on April 12. The series of self-portraits depicts his coming of age as a cross between introspection and celebration. Themes touch on what defines manliness for his generation and suburbia as a place for a young artist to escape yet call home.
“I couldn’t believe how a 17-year-old could be so tormented,” said Maria Giulia Maramotti, Max Mara’s U.S. retail director, who purchased two photographs after presenting him with the $ 10,000 award. “You just don’t see work that powerful and meaningful outside of a major art gallery. It struck me right away, and I knew he was our winner.”
Hall competed with thousands of teenagers for the honor. Many are invited to Miami for National YoungArts Week in January, when they attend master classes by the nonprofit’s

The Look: The Vivid World of Miami Street Style

“I always kind of use the same themes, whether it be humor, color or a unique moment,” said Jake Michaels, a Los Angeles photographer. “So this view of Miami was a combination of all three.” Over two weekends last month, it was on the streets in and around Miami — South Beach, Little Havana, Little Haiti and Wynwood — that he found that magical mix.

Saks Opens Traveling Pop-up Shop for North Sails in Miami

MIAMI — Saks Fifth Avenue christened its wholesale partnership with North Sails Collection with a pop-up at its new Brickell City Centre store in Miami. The shop, which will be housed on the store’s third level during the month of March, will then travel to the retailer’s Union Square store in San Francisco in May, followed by Manhattan’s Brookfield Place in July.
North Sails’ foray into U.S. wholesale — it operates freestanding stores in New York; Annapolis, Md.; and Newport, R.I. — coincides with the 52 Super Series Miami Royal Cup regatta, which runs through March 11, when top local clients are invited to be in the center of the action on a spectator boat.
“Guys are interested in pop-ups and an elevated shopping experience, and we’re putting a lot of effort into them,” said Tom Ott, senior vice president and general merchandise manager for men’s wear at Saks Fifth Avenue, of the afternoon outing on Biscayne Bay, which he believes will appeal to Miamians’ outdoor lifestyle, sailor or not. “Once you do these experiential events, customers become loyal and excited about the brick-and-mortar experience.”
Before they climb aboard, customers can dress the part by shopping at the pop-up’s edited selection of 30

A BREATH OF FRESH AIR: PALM BEACH MODERN + CONTEMPORARY INAUGURAL FAIR PRESENTED BY ART MIAMI

2017-01-10-1484008955-6075616-1.RobertShanaParkeHarrisonFirstofMay.jpg

Robert & Shana ParkeHarrison, First of May, 2015, Precipice series, Pigment print, Total edition of 7, 30 x 40 in., 40 x 53 in. Courtesy of Catherine Edelman Gallery.
ParkeHarrisons’ remarkable pigment print is a quintessential surrealist/dada/performance photographic document in which a man receives information over the airwaves and transcribes it at the same time.

Downtown West Palm Beach is a stone’s throw from the tropical island of Palm Beach on the east coast of Florida, close to where the mighty Gulf Stream current of the Atlantic Ocean flows, which helps generate perfect weather during the winter season and makes the area’s air quality arguably the best in the nation. Palm Beach County is one of most popular travel destinations on the Southeastern seaboard, with its pristine beaches, cultural attractions, outstanding restaurants, and distinguished museums and galleries all providing a lively supportive spirit to the vibrant local art scene, which continues to energize the downtown locale. In the last two years, West Palm Beach has received international attention with the celebrated annual CANVAS event, conceived by local gallerist Nicole Henry, in which first class muralists from around the world are commissioned to create remarkable large-scale paintings on available building façades along the city center corridor, making the thriving arts district also one of the world’s most ambitious outdoor museum shows. The community always has been encouraging of art initiatives, including the latest round of a $ 60 million expansion of the nearby Norton Museum of Art, while downtown West Palm Beach is experiencing a construction boom and a renaissance of sorts that has acted as an invisible magnet, drawing in thousands of people who want to enjoy the adventuresome vitality offered by its metropolitan landscape. So, it should be no surprise that the timing is perfect for Art Miami, one of America’s premier art fairs, to set up shop in the very heart of downtown, taking advantage of the creative dynamism this exciting city provides and the traditional strong interest in serious art collecting that is a tradition in the Palm Beaches.

In what seems to be the most anticipated and talked about art event of the Palm Beach season, Art Miami, the longest-running continuous art fair in America, is presenting Palm Beach Modern + Contemporary, which will debut at the fair’s downtown pavilion site on Thursday, January 12th (and run through Sunday the 15th). This highly respected and distinguished showcase for internationally renowned artists will open with a VIP Preview benefiting the Palm Beach Zoo & Conservation Society and sponsored by Christie’s International Real Estate. With a worldwide reputation for excellence, there’s no doubt that a fair from Art Miami coming to Palm Beach County during the height of the season undoubtedly will fill a welcome niche in the local art collecting landscape.

Palm Beach Modern + Contemporary, which will offer investment quality works from the 20th and 21st centuries as well as mid-career artists with impressive auction records, will take place in the modern setting of a 65,000-square-foot clear span pavilion located between CityPlace and the luxurious Hilton West Palm Beach. Centered at the major crossroads of Lakeview Drive and Okeechobee Boulevard at Dixie Highway, this fair city of 100,000 residents and visitors can enjoy at the pavilion a remarkable variety of exemplary work at a major art fair. It’s about time.

A massive, towering white tent covers the entire city block, which is a masterpiece of engineering and a perfect accompaniment to the masterworks that will be on display. An impressive group of international galleries from cities around the world, including Paris, Amsterdam, London and Tokyo will complement the line-up from U.S. cities such as New York, Chicago and Los Angeles. While it’s not possible to explore everything on view, the following is a selection of my favorite artworks:

Robert and Shana ParkeHarrison (work pictured above) have been taking the world by storm over the past six years by creating a totally unique genre within the history of contemporary photography. This talented couple fabricates remarkable fantasies under the guise of environmental narrative performances, using a strong dash of surreal imagination coupled with inventive theatrical constructed stage sets that they meticulously photograph with perfected panache and dynamic dramatic dioramas. British artist Marc Quinn creates up close studies of floral compositions and organic materials that seem to transcend traditional conformity with oversized depictions of compositions that are bigger than life. This successful formula also has developed into large standing “flowering sculptures” of an impressive towering scale that are unforgettable. Osborne Samuel Gallery, London. Ed Ruscha not only is considered one of the greatest contemporary artists in California, but is recognized throughout the world as a highly affecting innovator. Ruscha first came to prominence in L.A. in the late 1950s, making small collages that were influenced by those of Rauschenberg and Johns. As the collages were polished and refined, he began employing words and iconic images in unique ways, ultimately discovering a harmonious balance that through recognition allowed the artist to create paintings utilizing single words and phrases as an early pioneer of this genre. Andy Warhol’s revolutionary style of taking ordinary commercial images and placing them on silkscreened canvas was considered preposterous at first, with his earliest show of Campbell Soup cans imagery eliciting vociferous, negative responses from both the art world and the general public. His early iconic silkscreen portraits of famous personalities like Marilyn, Jackie and Elizabeth Taylor were off-register purposely, but eventually became recognized as brilliant while adorning the covers of Interview magazine. Another slant on portraiture is Hendrik Kerstens’ twenty-year investigation of photographing his daughter in the style of classic 17th century Dutch painters. Occasionally, these graceful and skillfully composed portraits provoke conversation and curiosity, as he often uses non-traditional materials to recreate the Dutch portraits, such as a grocery bag or paper towels as headpieces. He also has the customary lighting and austerity in his photographs that are reminiscent of masters such as Vermeer. Amstel Gallery, Amsterdam. (http://www.amstelgallery.com/)

Jill Nathanson is a talented painter who makes magic on canvas by using a technique of poured polymer, which forms overlapping layers of translucency that provide unfamiliar albeit fresh gorgeous hues and are delightful to examine and savor. Over the last four decades, she has deepened her study of color dynamics through methodically delving into chance and risk to ultimately create unity. Berry Campbell, New York. Anthony Caro is one of the titans who played a pivotal role in the development of 20th century sculpture. He is a well-respected abstract sculptor who came to the public’s attention with a show at the Whitechapel Gallery in 1963, where he exhibited large abstract works that stood directly on the ground. He joins Mark di Suvero and Chamberlain in providing history with a completely new voice from the way sculpture was previously perceived, and he was remarkably influential in the development of three-dimensional art. Thomas Downing, like Anthony Caro, was a great explorer of forms and movement, and this untitled painting on canvas of repeat dot irregular patterns is historically a fascinating picture when you consider it was executed prior to 1960, over forty years before Yayoi Kusuma’s overall dot paintings and Damien Hirst’s recent massive spot paintings. The only real difference is that the work illustrated here seems far superior and engagingly more handsome than others who incorporate spots. CONNERSMITH., Washington D.C. Damien Hirst has been the art world’s enfant terrible whose eclectic vision and preoccupation with life and death have manifested itself in subjects such as floating sharks in formaldehyde to prescription pill cabinets that could either cure you or kill you. Fortunately, butterflies are safe and incredibly beautiful themes that like Hirst’s identifiable spots, have become striking iconic monuments in contemporary art. Arcature Fine Art, Palm Beach. Virgil Abloh to Introduce Furniture Designs at Art Basel Miami Beach

Off-White founder Virgil Abloh has made diagonal lines the signature imprint on sneakers, camouflage jackets, T-shirts and a number of other fashion items designed for his high-end streetwear label. Now he’s ready to emphasize clean lines in his furniture collection, which will be introduced at Art Basel Miami Beach.
Trading cotton and leather for more durable materials such as steel, stone and wood, Abloh is readying the debut of tables, chairs and credenzas at the influential art fair. While the medium changes, the theory applied toward design remains the same.
“My brand was always holistic,” Abloh said on the phone three days before the show was scheduled to open to the public on  Dec. 1. “Noticing the design in everyday is a large part of my ethos.”
Abloh’s appreciation of clean design is informed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, who set the academic curriculum and modern aesthetic for the architecture program that he attended at Illinois Institute of Technology. Beyond studying the grid on which van der Rohe built his movement in Chicago, Abloh said, “I am very much a student of Tom Sachs or [Marcel] Duchamp in terms of how I view art and modern art and contemporary art. Pussy Riot To Perform In ‘Political Happening’ At Art Basel Miami Beach

Art Basel Miami Beach festivities kick off this week, bringing plenty of art fairs, champagne toasts, socialites, B-list celebs and free caviar to the city’s glitzed-out, sandy shores. And also, more unconventionally, the Russian feminist punk band Pussy Riot.

Kathy Grayson of New York gallery The Hole confirmed the Page Six rumor to artnet News, affirming that the group will participate in a rare “political happening” at some point during Art Basel that will consist of a performance and a talk. Like most of the week’s most sought-after events, it’s an exclusive one ― invitation-only, to be exact ― and capped at 500 people.

For those who may feel a bit uncomfortable about participating in a week-long bacchanal of art world decadence so shortly after a devastating presidential election, Pussy Riot offers an opportunity for liberal political activism in a most unusual venue.

The band, most well-known for spending nearly two years in a Russian prison after criticizing President Vladimir Putin in 2012, recently released three songs criticizing Donald Trump before the election, including the incredibly catchy girl-power anthem “Straight Outta Vagina.” Following Trump’s election, Pussy Riot encouraged fans not to lose hope on Twitter.

Of course, there is something strikingly un-punk about performing at a wildly exorbitant art fair known for star-studded stunts ― for example, that time Usher charged his cell phone in a naked woman’s vagina. But we hope that, despite the exclusive nature of the happening, Pussy Riot can radically shake up the art world elite.

For the rest of us normies who will not be in attendance, we can always pray for an Inauguration Day surprise.

Emilio Pucci Opens Store in Miami Design District

WELCOME TO MIAMI: Emilio Pucci opened its third store in Florida, in the Miami Design District. Pucci’s famed Torre print, originally designed in 1966, embellishes the entire facade. Painted in giant black and white mazelike blocks, the facade appears like an optical public artwork hanging above the sidewalk. Inside, white terrazzo tiles and white walls provide a canvas for the colorful clothing hanging on open brass fixtures. The cashier’s table is cut from a rose-colored travertine stone, a key material in all new Pucci stores. Located at 140 NE 39th Street, the one-floor boutique spans 1,600 square feet. The full Pucci spring collection is available, as well as special gowns, beaded caftans and embroidered pieces that cater to the Miami clientele. The shop also features women’s and men’s swimwear and resort pieces from the Orlebar Brown + Emilio Pucci collaboration, as well as sunglasses by the brand’s licensee, Marcolin. Pucci’s other two stores are in Palm Beach and Aventura. In total, Pucci has five freestanding stores in the U.S. and 28 internationally.

Noteworthy Sights in Miami Beach

Bal Harbour’s classically styled Admiralty apartments.

As Miami Beach welcomes art and design buffs in town for Art Basel this week–and prepares for its centennial celebrations next year–I thought it would be interesting to revisit some of the noteworthy buildings and landmarks that make this such a unique destination. And who better to tour the city with than artist Michele Oka Doner and art collector and Wolfsonian Museum founder Micky Wolfson. Doner and Wolfson–their fathers were each mayors of Miami Beach (Wolfson’s in the 1940s; Doner’s in the ’50s)–coauthored a magical book about the city, Miami Beach: Blueprint of an Eden (Feierabend Unique Books, 2005), and joined me recently for some architectural sightseeing.

“I Like Art by Men Better”: Gender by the Numbers at Art Basel Miami Beach

The last time I spoke with Micol Hebron, earlier this year, she was spearheading Gallery Tally, a project for which she and a small army of volunteers count the numbers of men and women artists on the rosters of art galleries. A week and a half ago, Hebron was in Miami for the art fairs, so she took the opportunity to do some more counting. Walking around Art Basel Miami Beach (ABMB), she stopped at various booths to tally the gender breakdowns of the artists on view, engaging dealers, directors, and attendants in discussions along the way.

Selena Gomez Takes Selfies With Harmony Korine In Miami

Selena Gomez reunited with “Spring Breakers” director Harmony Korine in Miami this weekend. The pair was seen walking around the city, and Gomez ‘grammed a car selfie captioned with angel and devil emojis. (Good one.)

Korine has said in interviews that Gomez was the first actress he cast in “Spring Breakers.” “Immediately, instinctively, I said it would be great if Selena Gomez would do this,” he told Indiewire. A sequel to the hit film, which also starred James Franco, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson and Rachel Korine, is reportedly in the works, but will be written by Irvine Welsh. Neither Korine nor the original stars are attached to the project, but that won’t stop the “Spring Breakers” gang from being straight up besties.

The Lilaguide: Baby-Friendly Miami & FT Lauderdale, 2005: New Parent Survival Guide to Shopping, Activities, Restaurants and More.

"When Dr. Sears can’t help, "the lilaguide" can."-"San Francisco Magazine" "A great resource that’s long overdue."-"SF Weekly" "The definitive owner’s manual for families with babies and toddlers."-"San Francisco Downtown Magazine" Like they say, everything changes when you have a baby. That’s why "the lilaguide" has become the essential item on every new parent’s checklist. Most parents wish their baby came with some sort of user-friendly handbook. Luckily, babies come with a lot of excellent word-of-mouth advice from other parents and friends. In fact, we found that nearly every parent out there has a great piece of child-rearing advice, like which baby store is the most helpful, or which restaurant tolerates strained carrots on the floor. Someone, we thought, should write this stuff down. And that’s how, please pardon the pun, "the lilaguide" was born. Our guides are literally written by parents for parents, through thousands of volunteer surveys. It’s what happens when someone writes down all the parental wisdom, organizes it, calculates it and presents it in an easy-to-use format. Apparently a lot of other new parents appreciate the inside scoop provided by the lilaguide, because our little green-striped books are quickly becoming a staple item in diaper bags across the country. You’ll find us in bookstores, toy stores, gift stores and maternity wards. Not to mention at a whole lot of baby showers. We’re rapidly expanding into major metro markets throughout the country, making the lilaguide the only national guide of its kind.

The Miami Art Fairs, Part 2

They’re are several personal ‘museums’ created by private collectors in Miami. My first stop today was at the Rubell Family Collection. After seeing various exhibitions there over the years I’ve grown impressed with their vision, pursuit of new territory and advocacy fora broad array of artists on the rise. This year they are presenting their significant acquisitions of Chinese art.

I visited Miami’s brilliant, new Perez Museum, which gives the city a powerful world class museum, passionately designed by Herzog & de Meuron. The viewing experience is sublime with a retrospective of Ai Weiwei and an insightful, inclusive Latin embracing exhibition of “Americana.” I’m tired of cookie-cutter museums with their checklists of requisite art and no sense of what city your in. Not here. This is an international, American museum; personal and relevant.

And with that, it was off to the art fairs with a visit to the Miami Project, with good light, wide aisles and friendly galleries. Many of the galleries today were doing a lot of business after being slow yesterday while the Miami Basel show opened with their high-priced art. Lots of collectors were relieved to find art within their price range at the satellite fairs, which is not to say it was inexpensive.

It was a short walk to Art Miami, which has been around longer. With more galleries, narrower aisles and larger crowds, there were some galleries that I thought were clunkers, showing art that bordered a kitsch, yet there was still a lot of quality.
