Here’s What You Didn’t See on Miss America

The television broadcast was cheery as ever and rebranded to address criticism. But behind the scenes, there’s a “kind of a civil war” brewing.

The Former And New Miss USA Both Wear Natural Hair, Twitter Reacts Accordingly

Deshauna Barber made a touching statement as she took one final walk as Miss USA in Las Vegas on Sunday night ― and she did it without saying a word.

The Army reserve officer looked stunning in a form-fitting yellow gown, but all eyes were on her hair, which she wore in its natural state. In a pre-recorded segment, Barber revealed that she wore her hair in honor of her mother, who recently died, AZ Central reported.

It didn’t take long for Twitter to send words of praise and support Barber’s way.

As if the moment weren’t inspiring enough, Barber passed the crown to Kara McCullough ― also from District of Columbia, also a black woman, also wearing her natural hair.

McCullough told Refinery29 she made the choice to reflect the traditional pageant’s changing and modernizing ideals. “I decided to embrace what made me feel comfortable, embrace what makes me feel the best and brightest onstage,” she said. “But also embrace what other people can relate to, so that typical, traditional sleek hair, big tease, not to say it’s gone out the window, but it’s transitioning a lot.”

The powerful visual of these two women sharing the special moment onstage garnered even more celebration on social media.

Tonight made history, indeed.

The Marvelous Magic of Miss Mabel

The Marvelous Magic of Miss Mabel

Wild fantasy, sly satire, and sharply observed family dynamics are the hallmarks of this tasty, effervescent series (along with mouthwatering recipes); this volume’s the most delectable yet.” -Kirkus Reviews “Mabel’s hijinks will appeal to readers of Roald Dahl’s Matilda and Diana Wynne Jones’s Howl’s Moving Castle….Mabel will inspire readers with her confident creativity; a solid secondary purchase, especially where Lowe’s previous title is popular.” -School Library Journal “This lovely celebration of quirky individualism applauds both creativity and science.” -Booklist Penderwicks meets Edward Eager in this charming coming of age tale about a young witch found in a flowerpot who’s on a journey to discover her roots. The morning Nora Ratcliff finds a baby in the flowerpot on her front steps her life changes forever. She had always wanted a child, but after her husband passed away, Nora never thought she would have one, but her flowerpot child was a miracle and she decided to name her Mabel. As Mabel grew up, she showed a distinct talent for magic. When Mabel is accepted to the prestigious witch school, Ruthersfield Academy, she excels at the magic curriculum but is constantly in trouble for experimenting and inventing her own potions. One day she is asked to write a paper on her magical roots and discovers the truth about her birth after a mean classmate blurts out what everyone seems to know except Mabel. Mabel is shocked but the revelation does explain a lot. In rebellion, Mabel changes her name to Magnolia and tries to understand why she was left in the flowerpot and who her birth family might be. Will Mabel find the answers she’s looking for-or will she discover that families are people who love each other and look after each other and that’s most important of all.

Jessica Chastain Plays A Lobbyist In ‘Miss Sloane,’ But You Can’t Lobby Her To Watch ‘The Tree Of Life’

In “Miss Sloane,” Jessica Chastain plays a no-frills Washington lobbyist who’d sooner burn everyone in her path than fail. A fan of black power suits and pill-popping, Elizabeth Sloane is brash and intimidating ― the exact opposite of Chastain, whose 12-year career has lent her a reputation as one of the nice ones in Hollywood.

Opening in limited release this weekend, “Miss Sloane” once again places Chastain in the middle of a congested Best Actress race. It would mark her third Oscar nomination, after “The Help” and “Zero Dark Thirty.” I sat down with Chastain last month to discuss the movie, women’s roles in the lobbying world, preparing to play Tammy Wynette and why she can’t watch “The Tree of Life.”

Elizabeth Sloane is like Olivia Pope from “Scandal” meets Carrie Mathieson from “Homeland.”

[Laughs] That’s a really interesting parallel to make. For me, “Sloane” is a story about addiction because she’s addicted to the win. I think Carrie is like that in “Homeland.” But also, too, it’s the example of the woman who is over-prepared, one step ahead of everyone else, which probably is the “Scandal” parallel. In our society, we sometimes have difficulty relating to women that are over-prepared and ambitious. I was really excited to explore playing a character like that.

It’s easy to determine that her urge to succeed stems from needing to work harder than her male counterparts to prove herself.

Exactly. Less than 10 percent of lobbyists in D.C. are women.

What did this role make you think of lobbyists who go against their own political interests in the name of big money?

It’s interesting because the film surrounds the gun debate, right? But actually, it could be around any issue. It could be about climate change or immigration right now because it’s an example of, “When you have a public majority that wants something, why is it so difficult to get a bill passed?”

I didn’t realize until I went to D.C. and did research on what was going on there. I had not realized that senators and congressmen, in many cases, go to three fundraisers a day. And then how can your priority be representing the people when your focus is on raising money to keep your seat in office? That means you’re being bought by whoever is giving you money. I think that is the situation we need to look at.

You’ve played a few characters with ties to political issues of the moment, particularly Maya in “Zero Dark Thirty.” Do you ever feel the need to assess what that does for you as a public figure, knowing performers are sometimes inextricably identified by their characters?

My goal is to create a discussion. I’m not here to tell people how to live their lives. I’m not here to lecture. I am nowhere near a perfect person and I don’t want to judge anyone else and I don’t want anyone to judge me. I’m very “live and let live.” But a few years ago I had this moment where I just thought, “What am I doing? How am I contributing in this world? I have the best job. I’m so lucky, I’m so grateful. But it’s like eating cake every day. I want to share the cake.” Now I’m trying to participate in projects that I’m acting in, and also the ones with my production company that I’m making but not even going to act in. What an incredible industry where we can inspire conversation.

What led you to that moment?

Well, I’ve had the moment before, but I can tell you what created action in me. I was at the Critics’ Choice Awards and I gave a speech about diversity. I’d won an award that was for a body of work instead of just one film, so I was like, “What do I talk about?” It was Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, so I thought, “I’m going to talk about diversity and the fact that we need it in the industry.” This was a few years ago, and then the next week I went to England to do some press on “A Most Violent Year,” and they said, “We loved your speech, but what are you going to do now?” And you’re like, “Oh, god, what am I going to do now? You’re right!”

It’s not enough to talk. We have to be accountable. If you are part of the industry, you’re part of the problem. If you’re part of society and there are people who are disenfranchised, you’re part of the problem because we’re all connected. I just looked at that and I said, “OK, I’m starting a production company.” I just started being active with more than just the roles I choose. I started asking what opportunities I could create for others.

Does ambition make you feel like you must always keep going, like Elizabeth?

Yeah, except I guess the difference that I don’t relate to at all in Sloane is about the kill, the win, the competition. I am the least competitive. I don’t play sports games. I like motocross and jet-skiing, but that’s when you’re by yourself. Even when we’re all together on Christmas and people say “let’s play a board game,” they make me very uncomfortable because I find that people’s feeling get hurt. I’m not like, “I won! I’m kicking your butt!” That’s not interesting to me. Even when I watch the World Series or the World Cup, I feel terrible for the team at the end that’s crying on the field. Oh god, my heart is breaking.

Another watershed for “Miss Sloane” is that you get to make a bad boy out of Jake Lacy, who plays an escort.

Fine with me!

After “Obvious Child” and “Carol,” he was the eternal nice guy.

And “Girls.” I remember walking into that first scene, with him lying there with his shirt off, like, “Really? Are you kidding me?” My job is so funny. And he’s great in the movie. Thank God for those scenes because that’s when you really get to see her when she’s not working. It’s her only form of a relationship.

Tell me about developing Elizabeth’s look with John Madden, who also directed you in another political thriller, “The Debt.”

When I first read the script, I always assumed she’d look a certain way. I assumed she’d hardly have any makeup on and she’d be looking tired all the time. And then I went to D.C. and I met with all these lobbyists with black nail polish. I couldn’t believe what I saw and how they, working in an industry that’s all men, used their outfits as their uniform.

She can’t afford to look tired or checked out.

No, exactly. And when I came back and I was telling John about it and we did the camera test, it was so different from how we had discussed the character. It was this hair that looks like a shark’s tooth, and it’s a red that’s stronger than my natural color and eye makeup with suits was such a strong, aggressive look. I know to John it was like, “What is going on here?” But I said, “Please trust me. You just gotta trust me. I really feel like this is the way in.” And he did.

What’s been the movie where your character most came to life after slipping on the costume?

Celia Foote [from “The Help”].

I knew that would be your answer. There’s so much in the essence of how she presents herself.

Right, and also people would relate to me differently. It changes your energy completely. I’ve never experienced this, but the entire crew ― you know, 100 people, mostly men, in films ― the way they would look at me when I was dressed as Celia Foote, and the energy that I would feel from them, and then I would go into the makeup trailer and take off the wig and take off the makeup and put on my sweats and walk out, and immediately there was this, “Huh.”

Were they more sympathetic to you as Celia?

As Celia, they were just more interested. More people were looking at me. They weren’t being mean to me when I wasn’t dressed, but you could see the power in that sexuality.

That’s interesting, considering Celia is someone who just wants to be liked by the other women in town.

Think of all of my characters. Think of Lucille from “Crimson Peak.” There’s definitely something about the way she dresses. You put it on and you go, [snaps her fingers] “OK.” The exterior is informed by what’s going on in the interior.

Celia Foote, her favorite actress is Marilyn Monroe. It says it in the book. I think someone, when she was a little girl, told her she looked like Marilyn Monroe, so she then wanted to project this. And Lucille, there’s a restraint to her. It’s almost like she’s in a straitjacket. She’s got this rage inside and this loneliness and this fear. You can see her being held back, but then at the end of the movie when she’s wearing her nightgown and there’s this freedom, she is batshit crazy. To me, it all goes hand in hand.

You’re good at playing people who have odd disconnects from others, either by choice or by an inability to see themselves for who they are. I’m picturing you unravelling in “Miss Julie.”

Yeah, it’s a long night for Miss Julie. That’s interesting. Recently someone asked me how many movies I’ve been in and I didn’t know, so I went to IMDb and I counted, just feature films in the cinema. It’s 27 films that I’ve done, which is shocking. If you think of Lucille, or Maya from “Zero Dark Thirty,” there are definitely characters who have difficulty being vulnerable with another person or connecting emotionally. But then I also have the characters that are the opposite. If you think of Celia Foote, she is just one ginormous beating heart.

She wants to connect with everyone, but she can’t quite figure out how.

But she just throws herself in. Minnie, Octavia Spencer’s character, is just like, “Girl, you need to play hard to get. You’re just throwing yourself right out there.” Or “Tree of Life,” where the character is just this angel of love. I think, for me, I want to play all different kinds of women. Or “Take Shelter.”

Oh yes, in “Take Shelter,” she’s desperate to connect with her husband.

And she’s all about love and compassion. Wait till you see “The Zookeeper’s Wife.” I love this movie so much. She has a huge heart too. She’s so loving, so gentle. She’s someone who works with animals. It’s a true story. You have to be very calm and grounded to be able to work with animals.

Have you gotten to see “Voyage of Time,” Terrence Malick’s documentary that uses footage from “The Tree of Life”?

I would be really happy to. From the very beginning, Terry had said “Voyage of Time” was supposed to come out at the same time as “Tree of Life,” so we were all prepared for that movie. I’ve been shooting in Santa Fe and I haven’t had an opportunity to see that movie, but “Tree of Life” is one of my favorite films. I haven’t been able to watch it since it came out because it’s so emotional for me. It was the high point of my life.

Because you were so young in your career?

That, and also I was playing a character who was the embodiment of love, so every day was just filled with so much joy. I was meditating on expanding my heart space and living with an open heart. Of course it affects you and how you treat other people. I loved those little boys so much, and I loved Terry so much. Watching the movie and seeing Mrs. O’Brien running through the streets with those little boys, I remember how wonderful it was. I’m heartsick for it.

You’re playing Tammy Wynette in a biopic soon. How are you preparing?

Oh, my god, I love Tammy Wynette. Well, there’s going to be some preparation in terms of music.

Are you singing?

Yeah.

Have we seen you sing before?

In “Crimson Peak,” I sing a really disturbing lullaby. But that’s not very earthy. Listen, I’m an actor who sings. I’m never going to go and open a band. I’m terrified about it. We’ll see how it goes when I go and start prep. Who knows? I may not sing. I’m leaving every option open. I read the daughter’s book, The Three of Us, which I found so interesting, and of course I’m watching a lot of videos. I’m just super excited to work with Josh Brolin. I can’t imagine anyone else playing George Jones. He’s so right for that. I don’t know if you’ve read the script, but it’s so dynamic and so exciting and sexy. They’re like the Sid and Nancy of the country scene.

This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity and length. “Miss Sloane” expands to wide release Dec. 9.

Miss Piggy and Kermit Call It Quits

In case you’ve been living under a rock for the past month, or obsessing over the possibility of a President Trump, or the rollercoaster ride the stock market is taking us all on, I must inform you that Miss Piggy and Kermit have called it quits.

I know, I was just as upset. Sure they had their problems, but what passionate couple doesn’t? Sure he’s an Amphibian and she’s a mammal. Yes, he’s tailless, and she’s what the Jewish people might call, dirty, and non-kosher. But they were fun to watch, and they had that je ne sais quoi.

It seems that every other day a celebrity couple’s relationship goes into the crapper, or someone you know; a friend, or family member, is divorcing, but the Muppets? Why? Now where are my role models going to come from? Are my parents, whose 52 years and counting, (happy anniversary, by the way) are all that’s left?! Who’s next, Bert and Ernie?

I suppose we’re all the same, muppets and humans alike. The muppets are simply mirroring us mortals, and this could not have been truer when the entertainment rags reported that Kermit had already found a new pig — a pig with auburn hair.

Oh, Kermit, why so soon? Miss Piggy’s snout wasn’t even warm, and you’ve leap frogged onto another. Miss Piggy had barely left the barn, and Kermit had started dating Denise, a younger, 25, and thinner pig. Kermit is 60 years old, and Missy Piggy is only 41. I suppose 20 years just wasn’t young enough.

When Kermit sang, “It’s Not Easy Being Green,” I fell in love with his vulnerability and sensitivity. I thought that he and Miss Piggy would be forever. What a hard lesson to learn.

I still have hope, however, because a life without it, isn’t a life worth living. Miss Piggy and Kermit have broken up before, so perhaps they’ll find each other again.

Lest anyone think that Miss Piggy is curled up in a fetal position on the kitchen floor of her sty, she’s not. She’s been spotted out with none other than hunky hunk, Liam Hemsworth. Croak on that, Kermit.

It Wasn’t Just A Hookup To Me, Miss Piggy

Monday morning.

People thinking about the mountain of work ahead of them.

Or the exact location of Kit Harington.

Or thigh-brows.

I can’t stop thinking about her. About Friday night.

I hooked up (twice) with Miss Piggy over the weekend. It’s the happiest I’ve been in years. And sure, she’s a pig. But she does people things, like acting in movies and getting jealous. She’s obviously not a pig like the pigs we eat. I mean, last I checked, people wear dresses and karate-chop their enemies. So, no, I don’t feel bad for taking a pig out for adult drinks.

The only thing that makes me feel bad is that Miss Piggy thinks it was a harmless hook-up. And that she’s still hung up on her frog ex-boyfriend, Kermit. I have to deal with that. I’m not mad. Just disappointed.

Everybody knows that Miss Piggy just got out of a very long relationship. And everybody knows that her ex is already seeing somebody new. So of course her emotions are raw, and she’s entitled to go out and hook up with dudes.

I’ve just never been a rebound. I’m usually the boyfriend. Or whatever it’s called when you get nothing and you just go home to watch “Seinfeld.”

Miss Piggy and I had been texting a lot toward the end of her breakup. I’m not proud of secretly flirting with a pig-woman with a boyfriend, but I never met Kermit so I didn’t care about his feelings. If I’m being totally honest, I think Kermit’s a coward and a loser and I was happy to take his girl. He’s obviously not good enough for Miss Piggy and he has no problem parading his younger pig around even though he knows it hurts Miss Piggy. Asshole tries to pretend like that’s an OK thing to do and he’s just this neurotic sweetheart. He’s not. And if I had it my way, Kermit would get eaten by a snake.

Anyway, Miss Piggy was feeling vulnerable about Kermit moving on so fast. So we met up at Night of Joy in Brooklyn. Great cocktails. Never gets crowded. Groovy tunes.

We had many tequilas and eventually started talking about whether this new pig, Denise, was hotter than Miss Piggy. I assured her that Denise is hot garbage. I told Miss Piggy, “You’re a catch! Any guy would be down to clown any time you wanted!” I told her that I totally would. I told her I think about it all the time. In the shower. On dates with other people. Most of the time, really. I told Miss Piggy that when I need a reason to get out of bed in the morning, I think about what it would be like to have sex with her on a hammock on Muppet Treasure Island.

That’s when I knew I had probably weirded her out.

Maybe it was the sexy lighting. Maybe the Cuervo. But instead of storming out, she put her hoof on my hand and gently rolled it around. It’s hard for pigs to hold things like people. Then she nudged her hoof underneath my hand. I looked up and we locked eyes.

John Trowbridge: “You’re amazing.”

Miss Piggy: “Who? Moi?”

Friendship be DAMNED! We Uber’d it back to my place. Out of respect for Miss Piggy, I wont go into too much detail about what happened next. But I will say this: I’m never having sex with a human woman again.

The next morning, I woke up to her staring in my eyes. Then we had sex again (for way longer).

Then I got up to shower, discovering she had left my place when I returned from the bathroom.

We haven’t spoken since.

Realistically, it wasn’t going to work for many reasons. She’s a cultural icon, and I’m just a comedy writer for The Huffington Post. Another big reason is that Miss Piggy is actually a pig-puppet controlled by a human person that I’ve never exchanged words with. Not a talking pig. I think I should’ve said that earlier. That’s a huge element to this story that deserves a lot more attention. It’s the main reason, actually. And it makes a lot more sense than me falling for a talking pig. A lot of expensive equipment was stolen from my apartment and I know that Miss Piggy couldn’t lift it by herself. I assume it was the person who was controlling the Miss Piggy puppet. I guess I let all this happen because I wanted to believe that Miss Piggy was a real person who had feelings for me. I’m so embarrassed that I bought $ 55 dollars worth of drinks for a random person with their hand inside an expensive sock.

Well, I guess that’s just what I get for falling in love. If I’ve learned anything from this experience, it’s this: You love what you love — not what loves you back.

If you’ve ever been made a rebound, please leave your experience in the comments. As always, I promise to respond to each and every one of them. You’re not alone.

Panama Also Drops Out Of Donald Trump’s Miss Universe Pageant

PANAMA CITY (AP) — Panama is joining several other Latin American nations in dropping out of the Miss Universe pageant in protest over Donald Trump’s comments about immigrants.

The Miss Panama Organization and the Telemetro television channel say that this year they won’t participate in or broadcast the Miss Universe contest partly owned by Trump.

They say the move is “a message of solidarity” to Mexicans offended by Trump’s recent description of Mexican migrants as rapists and as people who bring drugs and crime to the United States.

Panama hosted the pageant in 1986 and 2003. Contest organizers and broadcasters in Costa Rica and Mexico also have pulled out of the event.

Miss Piggy Does Not Tolerate Catcalling

Miss Piggy recently came out to the world as a feminist icon. On the heels of this historic announcement, MTV sat down with Miss Piggy and Kermit The Frog to discuss feminism, the new Muppets show and catcalling (because male chauvinist pigs, duh).

When asked, “How would you handle being catcalled?” Miss Piggy said, “Usually whenever somebody catcalls me on the street, there’s a new pothole the next day.” Kermit The Frog quickly added, “Yes, with a head sticking up.”

Moral of the story? Don’t mess with Miss Piggy.

9 Reasons No One Will Miss Sepp Blatter When He’s Gone

Longtime FIFA president Sepp Blatter voluntarily resigned on Tuesday after nearly two decades at the helm of perhaps the world’s most important sports organization.

But while everyone is focusing on the overwhelming evidence of corruption within the organization, we just couldn’t let Blatter drift into obscurity without first recounting his many shortcomings throughout the years.

He suggested female athletes “play in more feminine clothes.”

In 2004, he offered a suggestion to boost the popularity of women’s soccer: “Let the women play in more feminine clothes like they do in volleyball. They could, for example, have tighter shorts.” More than a decade later, the women’s game is doing just fine without his knucklehead advice.

He noted women should talk as much at work as they do at home.

In 2013, he tipped the sexism meter to idiotic while boasting that three women out of 24 members then served on the executive committee. “We now have three ladies on the board,” he said. “Say something, ladies! You are always speaking at home. Now you can speak here.”

He said gay people shouldn’t have sex at the World Cup.

He’s stuck his foot in his mouth on other issues as well, like gay rights. After Qatar was awarded the World Cup for 2022, Blatter had this tip for gay fans visiting the country, knowing Qatar’s strict laws against homosexuality: “I’d say they should refrain from any sexual activities.”

He implied that Africans are less honest than Europeans.

Some might say he was racist, too: In 2006, he told an Italian newspaper that reported match-fixing in Italy’s soccer league would tarnish the game’s image. “I could understand it if it had happened in Africa,” he said, “but not in Italy.”

He said a simple handshake could cure racism.

Yet this is the same man who told CNN that racism in soccer could be cured with a handshake. Oh, wait, that was at the same time he said racism wasn’t a problem on the field at all. “There is no racism. There is maybe one of the players towards another — he has a word or a gesture which is not the correct one.”

At the very least, he showed cluelessness.

While many believe the investigation into bribery, fraud and racketeering will eventually hit Blatter directly, we can perhaps all agree that he wasn’t running a tightest of ships.

In 2011, FIFA opened an investigation into its own organization. Surprise: it absolved Blatter of wrongdoing while conceding that he did have poor oversight in a bribery matter. The ethics committee didn’t make the 430-page report public, issuing a 42-page “executive summary” in 2014 instead.

He dismissed words to the wise.

He apparently wasn’t much of an advice-taker, either. In 2011, Blatter’s own commission of an independent study into reform at FIFA resulted in the recommendation that he have a system for “disclosing cash payments to officials.” According to the Wall Street Journal, he ignored it.

He said Russia’s World Cup could help peace.

Blatter seems to have a skewed view of diplomacy as well. He said in March that Russia hosting the World Cup in 2018 would stabilize the region. Right, ’cause the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi worked so well to bring peace to Ukraine.

He didn’t know a soccer star when he saw one.

The exiting soccer chief could be pretty oblivious too. U.S. national team star Alex Morgan said Blatter didn’t even recognize her at a 2013 banquet to award the FIFA Women’s Player of the Year. Morgan was one of the finalists. “Sepp Blatter didn’t know who I was,” she said. “That was pretty shocking.”

Soon enough, he won’t be your problem anymore, Alex. Oh, how the mighty has fallen.

Red Carpet Lessons for Real Life, Courtesy of Bravo’s Miss Lawrence and Derek J

When I was offered a chance to hear what Bravo‘s resident stylish dudes from Atlanta, Derek J and Miss Lawrence of Fashion Queens (and Real Housewives of Atlanta, duh) had to say about Grammys style, I may have responded with an all-caps YES.

miss-lawrence-derek-j-fashion-police

The boys delivered an email this morning filled with their thoughts on the night’s best- and worst-dressed and while they didn’t agree with all my best-dressed picks, there was a lot of wisdom tucked in among all their exclamation points and catchphrases (a worried Sophia was very nervous what they meant by “gag” until I clarified it was a positive).

Lesson #1: Be on point.
gwen-stefani-versace-jumpsuit-grammys-2015
Both guys loved Gwen Stefani and appreciated the fact that a lot of thought went into nailing her pretty perfect look. “She showed us how a jumpsuit should be worn,” Miss Lawrence said. “She was so on-point!” agreed Derek J. “She’s truly a fashion girl and knows how to do it right from head to toe.”

Lesson #2: Be yourself.
sia-wig-cape-grammys-2015
“SIA!!!!! The fact that you couldn’t see her face and she still SLAYED. With those bangs stopping at the tip of her nose, she’s saying ‘I don’t see you and I only want you to hear about ME!’ I loved her cape too. Simple and chic but uber-eccentric and glam!”—Miss Lawrence

Lesson #3: Don’t be afraid of texture.
katy-perry-zuhair-murad-dress-grammys-2015
Katy Perry wasn’t and it turned into a big win. “I loved the Zuhair Murad dress Katy wore. The texture reminded me of an ice princess and I loved it!”—Derek J.

Lesson #4: Harness the power of contrast and simplicity.
annie-lennox-black-dress-grammys-2015
Miss Lawrence loved the simple choices Annie Lennox made. “I was in awe of the stark blond pixie hair paired with such a classy gown. It was very GODDESS-like!”

Lesson #5: Dress for your hair.
kim-kardashian-jean-paul-gaultier-gold-dress-grammys-2015
“She’s one of my favorite girls, but this was not the Kim Kardashian I’m used to,” Miss Lawrence seconded. “Her new short hair competed with the shoulders.” I’m sure she was feeling the brand-new crop, but I get his point. With this dress (which I loved), hair-up might’ve been better.

Lesson #6: Bring some arm candy.
madonna-nas-grammys-dress-outfit-2015
Madonna‘s costume-y look fell a little flat for both the boys and me, but leave it to Derek J to find the silver lining. “The only reason she kept my attention is because Nas was standing beside her.” The other handsome gent is Diplo.

Lesson #7: Don’t be afraid to take risks.
rihanna-pink-giambattista-valli-dress-grammys-2015
Because sometimes the result can be SO good. “Fashion risk-taker herself Rihanna in Giambattista Valli!!!!!! There is nothing more to say!!!!!” Derek J wrote, original exclamation marks included (he mimicked a mic drop next).

Thoughts on their picks? Who was your favorite from last night? Anything you did NOT like?

PS: If you want to watch the guys dish it live, Fashion Queens is on Bravo on Sunday nights at 11:30 p.m.

Planning a Honeymoon? Don’t Miss These 6 Tips!

Some days I wish I could go back and plan our wedding all over again. Just kidding, I would never wish for that, but what I DO wish I could do is plan our honeymoon all over again. We were less than thrilled with Costa Rica (you can’t win them all!), but you can’t go wrong using any of the below tips.
2014-11-24-IMG_4458.JPG
(Sometimes I do re-live our honeymoon just to look at my smoking hot husband. #realtalk)

Planning a honeymoon? Here is some of my best advice!

1. Don’t use a travel agent. They are getting commission off the packages they sell to you, so they’re going to guide you toward the packages where they receive the highest revenue. I would do the same thing! What I’m saying is–only you know what you will like. The reality is that the majority of these travel agents have never been to the resorts and destinations they’re selling you on. Before our honeymoon, we had always booked trips ourselves and figured we would take a chance since we had heard great things regarding travel agents making THE BEST arrangements. Never again, lesson learned.

2. If you’re going to a tropical, all-inclusive type of place, you will live in your swimsuit, so pack accordingly. I got this advice before we went on ours and made sure I had a different bathing suit for everyday, as well as a new cover-up. It helps later when you’re trying to differentiate days via photos

3. If you have any sort of food allergies, pack things like granola bars, that you know you’ll be able to eat in a pinch. My husband verified with our resort that I would have plenty to eat with a gluten allergy, but when we got there it was a totally different story. Being sick for eight days on your honeymoon IS NOT fun. Thankfully, I always keep at least one box of KIND bars in my suitcase when I travel.

4. Use your days to unwind and completely unplug. I know, I know. You want to look at all your wedding photos, check in on Facebook & Instagram and make sure your email inbox hasn’t imploded. I did, too! Save it for the evenings when your significant other is grabbing a shower or you have some downtime before dinner. Spend your daytime simply taking in your time off!

5. This one seems obvious, but I was completely aloof. For international travel regardless of if the resort says you will not need it, bring a converter. So many of our plug-in items (hairdryer, toothbrush, razor, etc.) completely failed on us mid-trip because we weren’t able to charge them! The items we were able to charge made this horrendous buzzing noise that led me to believe they would explode at any given moment. Just pack that darn converter.

6. Again for international travel, make sure your passport is up to date! One thing that didn’t happen to me, but happened to a friend is in regards to passports and name changing. If you plan on taking a later honeymoon and have changed your name officially, make sure your passport matches the name on the ticket! They will 100 percent not let you on the plane otherwise. YIKES!

What honeymoon tips do you have for engaged couples?

Wouldn't Miss It for the World

Wouldn't Miss It for the World

A striking exploration of dubious pursuits like destination weddings, book clubs, and rock ''n'' roll, Wouldn''t Miss It for the World is a spirited and surprising new novel from Tara McCarthy, the author of Love Will Tear Us Apart. The cast of characters that Tara McCarthy sends down to the tiny Central American country of Belize for a destination wedding are in for a few surprises. There''s mother-of-the-bride Alice, a widow, who is about to come face-to-face with an impressive array of Belizean creatures from toucans to intriguing ex-pats. There''s Abby, who would rather be back home at Chelsea Lambert''s Sweet Sixteen but isn''t entirely displeased with the effect her new black bikini has o n some of the wedding guests. And there''s Dan, an old friend of the groom, who has decided it''s time to declare his love for the bride — until complications with his girlfriend arise. As their story unfolds against a backdrop of Mayan temples, butterfly farms, and coral reefs, we learn, too, about the bride and the groom. June and Cash are members of the Starter House, an up-and-coming rock band that is certain to either break through or break up — and this will be the week that decides it.

Why Vanessa Williams Never Thought She’d Win Miss America (VIDEO)

Thirty years ago, Vanessa Williams made history as the first African-American woman to be crowned Miss America. In her interview for “Oprah’s Master Class,” Williams says never believed it was really possible for her to win before she actually took the crown.

Williams was a theatre major at Syracuse University and says she had no interest in pageants at first. She blew off the idea until her junior year, when she entered the Ms. Greater Syracuse Pageant – and won. “Then I ended up winning Syracuse, New York and Miss America in September within six months period of time,” Williams says.

During the Miss America 1984 competition, Williams says she took advantage of the talents she already had. “I sang a song that was easy for me,” she says. “I majored in musical theatre, so it wasn’t like I had to come up with an act.”

Though she thought she might place in the top 10, Williams didn’t think it would go further than that. “So I just basically was there to have a good time, I really did not think that I would win because I didn’t think that it was the time,” Williams says. “There had never been a black Miss America, so why would it be this year? If so, possibly I knew that I had what it took, but I didn’t think they’d actually go for it.”

After winning the title, her reign as Miss America was fraught with controversy. Williams opens up about the challenges she faced and the Penthouse scandal that forced her to resign on “Oprah’s Master Class” airing Sunday, July 13 at 10 p.m. ET on OWN.

Nia Sanchez, Miss Nevada, Crowned Miss USA 2014

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Miss Nevada Nia Sanchez, a fourth-degree black belt in the Korean martial art of taekwondo, was crowned Miss USA 2014 on Sunday night.

She beat out 50 other contestants from all the states and the District of Columbia for the title of 63rd Miss USA. First runner-up was Miss North Dakota Audra Mari.Erin Brady, of South Glastonbury, Connecticut, the 2013 winner, gave up her crown to Sanchez after a three-hour telecast from the Baton Rouge Civic Center in Louisiana.

Other runner-ups, judged on interviews, evening gowns and swimsuits were: home state beauty queen, Miss Louisiana Brittany Guidry; Miss Georgia Tiana Griggs, Miss Florida Brittany Oldehoff and Miss Iowa Carlyn Bradarich.

Bradarich got a second chance when the viewing audience gave her the most votes on Twitter in the pageant’s first-ever “Save the Queen” option.

Sanchez will go on to represent the U.S. at the Miss Universe competition later this year.

In a vibrant red floor-length fishtail gown, Miss Nevada talked about the importance of women being able to defend themselves when asked a question about the high rate of sexual assaults on college campuses. Judge Rumer Willis, the 25-year-old daughter of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore, said 19 percent of U.S. undergraduate women are victims of sexual assault and asked Sanchez why she thinks this is being swept under the rug and what should be done about it.

Sanchez said bringing awareness to the issue was important, as well as women taking it upon themselves to learn how to defend themselves.

The subject of sexual assault was also on the mind of Miss Pennsylvania Valerie Gatto. She made headlines this week when she said she was the product of rape. During a taped segment that aired when her name was called, Gatto said her mother was 19 when she was attacked leaving work in Pittsburgh and became pregnant.

Gatto said she is living proof “that your circumstances do not define your life.”

First runner-up Mari said she overcame being bullied in high school by competing in ice hockey. The Fargo, N.D., native wore a green floor-length evening gown and in her final interview talked about the importance of getting an education and going to college.

Contestants entered the stage on a glitzy float as Louisiana native singer-songwriter Marc Broussard sang the New Orleans hits “Iko Iko” and “Hey Pocky Way” to kick off the 2014 contest. The women introduced themselves while holding Mardi Gras masks in their hands as purple, green and gold confetti fell in the background.

The pageant also included musical acts by the country music duo Florida Georgia Line, rapper Nelly and Latin pop band Camila.

Celebrity judges walked a red carpet in evening gowns and tuxedos before the start of the show, posing for pictures and talking about the qualities they would be looking for in the beauty they crown the winner.

“It’s very important that she has confidence,” said Barbara Palacios, Miss Universe 1986 and a coach and judge for the new Telemundo reality show, “Miss Latina Universo.” ”The right attitude and perseverance are also very important.”

“It’s all about the eyes,” said Lance Bass of the pop singing boy group NSYNC. “I just want to see a girl that is just really having a good time up there.”

Others who walked the red carpet were former NBA star Karl Malone; actors Ian Ziering, Melissa Peterman and Rumer Willis; pageant show host Jeannie Mai; and Donald Trump, who owns the Miss Universe Organization, which includes the Miss USA pageant.

Jimmy Fallon Leaves ‘Late Night’ For ‘The Tonight Show,’ Says He’ll ‘Miss Being On TV At 12:37’

NEW YORK (AP) — It’s not so much “goodbye” as “on break.”

With Jimmy Fallon’s departure from “Late Night” on Friday after five years in the host chair, he will be off the NBC airwaves a scant 10 days before coming back as host of “The Tonight Show,” which was vacated Thursday by Jay Leno after 22 years. “I’m really going to miss being on TV at 12:37,” Fallon joked in his farewell monologue, noting that his “fierce rivals” have been CBS host Craig Ferguson “and a Veggie-Chopper infomercial.”

But if he was overjoyed at his promotion to a slot one hour earlier — and he radiated joy all through the finale (taped Friday afternoon) — at the same time he could hardly keep his tear ducts in check.

“I’m not gonna cry,” he vowed early on, “but I’m gonna get really close.”

“You got to pull it together,” teased his guest, fellow “Saturday Night Live” alum Andy Samberg. “You got to man up.”

“‘Irish Wuss’ was my nickname in high school,” replied Fallon.

The 39-year-old Fallon has promised that nothing much will change with his talk-comedy-music formula, except the new time slot and “Tonight Show” title.

But if it’s not so big a change for Fallon (or his house band, the Roots, or his announcer, Steve Higgins, who all are coming along), it’s a big change for “Tonight,” which is returning to New York’s Rockefeller Plaza after more than 40 years in Los Angeles, and returning to NBC’s Studio 6B, once the home of “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.”

To complete this game of musical chairs, Seth Meyers (another “SNL” grad) becomes “Late Night” host starting Feb. 24.

“We’re gonna be a great team back-to-back,” Fallon said.

During his monologue, Fallon got nostalgic, with a dash of comedy. Since premiering in March 2009, he spun out 10,000 jokes, he announced, all of which he proceeded to sum up as: “Joe Biden needed Obamacare after Anthony Weiner texted Justin Bieber a picture of Chris Christie dating a Kardashian on the Jersey shore with Rob Ford.”

More sincerely, Fallon voiced thanks to David Letterman for starting “Late Night,” and to Conan O’Brien, its second host, as well as to his viewers, whose support “means the world to me. It makes me so happy.”

The hour ended with a big musical number: Fallon on drums and singing the Band classic “The Weight,” accompanied by a large ensemble of Muppets.

Then he made his exit from his longtime “Late Night” home, Studio 6A, and strode a few steps down a hallway to his soon-to-be new home. He opened the door to Studio 6B to find a cheering, welcoming throng. Fade out.

It’s awaiting him for real in just 10 days.
