In the Wake of Their Mother’s Death, How Two Brothers Rebuilt Their Video Game

When brothers Andrew and Brian Allanson finally decided to buckle down and make their dream game in 2013, their enthusiasm seemed bottomless. Their idea fit neatly into the indie milieu that was rocketing off around that time, especially for “Earthbound”–esque games: “ YIIK: A Postmodern RPG,” pronounced Y-2-K, a retro 3D JRPG with a distinct low-poly […]

Channing Tatum Wishes Ex Jenna Dewan ‘Happy Mother’s Day, Baby’ as Split Remains ‘Amicable’

No Mother’s Day drama here!

Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan‘s post-split holiday was smooth sailing, with a source telling PEOPLE the stars are still “very amicable.”

“Evie spent Mother’s Day weekend with Jenna while Channing was traveling,” the insider says of their daughter Everly, who turns 5 later this month.

Despite no longer being together, Tatum, 38, shared a message for Dewan, 37, on his Instagram Story, Sunday.

“Happy Mother’s Day everybody,” he said in a video taken in the desert, which he has called his “sanctuary” after the split. “Jenna, happy Mother’s Day, baby. Mama, happy Mother’s Day — I hope you’re enjoying this beautiful sunset. Love you guys.”

The holiday weekend came just six weeks after the former pair announced their separation following nearly nine years of marriage.

A reality insider previously told PEOPLE on April 23 that the split has “been hard for Channing.” Now, though, the first source says, “He’s adjusting better to the separation and is keeping busy with his friends and work.”

In addition to spending part of the holiday weekend at Buttonwillow Raceway Park outside of Los Angeles, Tatum, has “been traveling a ton between CinemaCon commitments and for his vodka company,” Born and Bred, the source says.

As for his communication with Dewan, the source tells PEOPLE, “He and Jenna are still on the same page when it comes to their daughter and they’re always in touch about her.”

“Their relationship continues to be very amicable,” the source adds.

“We started out as friends, and I would say it was an instant recognition,” Dewan recently shared in the cover story for the 15th-anniversary issue of Vegas magazine — her first since the split.

“When we met , it felt like we had known each other for many years. Ultimately, no matter what Chan and I are doing, we’re really great friends. I think that will never change, no matter what,” she added.

Still, both are showing signs that they’re moving on. Three weeks after the pair announced their split, Dewan changed her name on social media from “Jenna Dewan Tatum” back to “Jenna Dewan.”

A source close to the couple previously told PEOPLE the pair tried to make things work after “growing apart” over the past year.

“They really wanted to make their marriage work,” said the source. “But neither of them are people who will stay in something that isn’t fully right.”

Shannon Beador Spending ‘Low-Key’ Mother’s Day with Daughters Amid Contentious Divorce

Shannon Beador is keeping things causal this Mother’s Day.

The 54-year-old Real Housewives of Orange County star tells PEOPLE she’s spending the big day with her daughters, Sophie, 16, and twins Stella and Adeline, 13.

“This year, I’ll be a doing a low-key Mother’s day at home with my three daughters,” the reality star says. “Anytime I get to have time with my girls is quality time.”

Want to keep up on the latest from PEOPLE? Sign up for our daily newsletter to get our best stories of the day delivered straight to your inbox.

It’s been a tough few months for Beador, who split from David Beador in September after 17 years of marriage.

The two have had a contentious divorce so far, with a source telling PEOPLE that David “spewed profanities” at Shannon back in March after she was awarded joint legal and physical custody of their three daughters as well as $ 22,500 per month for temporary non-taxable child and spousal support in their temporary settlement.

Weeks later, body-shaming texts David allegedly sent Shannon were exposed. He was accused of telling her, “You f—ing disgust me. F— you. What do you have to do? Eat? Because you can’t get off your fat ass.”

David had no comment on his alleged courtroom behavior and texts, but Shannon told PEOPLE in a statement that she’s focused on moving forward.

“As David and I continue our divorce proceedings, I’m doing everything I can to move things efficiently along so that our three children are not subjected to unnecessary stress during an already difficult time,” she said. “I want to be as fair as possible. I remain focused on a clean resolution and have no interest in engaging in a war of words.”

Last month, Shannon debuted a new line of cooked, ready-to-eat meals on QVC called Real for Real Cuisine — a venture she credited in part to her split. “As a single mom, a lot of my friends say they go through this every night. We say, ‘Oh, if there was just an easy, healthy option for us to eat for dinner tonight,’ ” she told PEOPLE.

Bill Clinton Pinch Hits for Chelsea at Mother’s Day Luncheon

When the pinch hitter at the 40th annual Mother’s Day Luncheon happens to be Bill Clinton, the 42nd U.S. president, one can’t be too disappointed.
His daughter, Chelsea Clinton, one of the recipients of the Outstanding Mother Awards, was stuck in Omaha, Neb., and couldn’t get a plane out, so her father happily obliged to accept the award on her behalf.
Clinton told some endearing stories about his daughter, who is vice chair of the Clinton Foundation.
“Here’s what I’d like you to know about my child. In some ways she had a remarkably privileged upbringing though we weren’t wealthy by conventional standards until I got out of the White House. I had the lowest net worth of any president ever elected since World War II. I was governor for 12 years, but it was always tough,” said Clinton. He explained that Chelsea started reading the newspaper at six years old and he was in a very hot reelection campaign, and she read things that people were saying about him.
“So I talked to Hillary at breakfast every morning in the election year — 1986 — and we turned it into a political debate. Three people were running and people were saying I was

Songs That Were Written in Honor of Mothers

In honor of Mother’s Day, we’re looking back at 12 unforgettable musical tributes from daughters and sons to the women who raised them.

Listen to the heartwarming and heart-wrenching tracks that will definitely inspire you to call your own mom.

1. Kanye West: “Hey Mama”

The rapper‘s adoring tribute to mom Donda West was included on his 2005 record Late Registration. Donda liked the song so much that she even reportedly used it as her ringtone.

A week after her 2007 death, West broke down in tears while attempting to introduce the track at a Paris concert.

2. Carrie Underwood: “Mama’s Song”

Underwood co-wrote the 2010 Play On song about the evolving relationship between mothers and daughters. ” ‘Mama’s Song’ definitely reflects my mom and I’s relationship. Hopefully a lot of moms and daughters can relate to this too,” the singer said in an interview on her YouTube channel. Underwood’s husband Mike Fisher and her mother, Carole Underwood, both appeared in the music video.

3. Taylor Swift: “The Best Day”

” ‘The Best Day’ is a song that I wrote without telling my mom,” Swift told Taste of Country of her 2008 Fearless track. “I wrote it in the summertime, and I recorded it secretly, too. I had this idea that I wanted to play it for her for Christmas. So when I got the track I synced up all of these home videos from when I was a little kid to go along with the song like a music video, and played it for her on Christmas Eve and she was crying her eyes out.”

4. Beyoncé: “Ring Off”

In 2014’s “Ring Off,” Beyoncé celebrates mom Tina Lawson‘s newfound independence following her divorce from Mathew Knowles. The song was included on the deluxe release of her self-titled album.

5. Blake Shelton: “The Baby”

” ‘The Baby’ is based on the true story of Michael White and the relationship he had with his mother. He wrote the song ,” Shelton told CMT of his 2003 tear-jerker hit. “As far as my life is concerned, it is true up until the part where the mother passes away. I am the baby of the family, and I moved away when I was 17, and I was away from home when I turned 21, and up until now it has paralleled my life.”

“But the one thing that it teaches me, and hopefully everyone who hears the song, is not to take your family for granted, and try to at least stay in touch with them,” he added.

6. Madonna: “Promise to Try”

The music icon co-wrote the somber Like a Prayer ballad about her mother Madonna Louis Ciccone, who died of breast cancer when the star was five. In her 1991 Rockumentary Madonna: Truth of Dare, “Promise to Try” plays as she visits her mother’s grave in Detroit.

7. Drake: “You & The 6”

Drake directly addresses mom Sandi Graham in “You & The 6,” off his 2015 album If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late. “The 6” refers to his hometown of Toronto.

8. Chance The Rapper: “Hey Ma”

“Hey Ma” gives Chance the opportunity to thank his own mother, Lisa Bennet, for surviving his adolescent misbehavior. The song comes off of the rapper’s 2012 mixtape 10 Day, which is named after the 10-day high school suspension during which he began working on the collection.

9. The Beatles: “Julia”

The White Album song was named after John Lennon’s mother, Julia Lennon, who died in a traffic accident when he was 17. The singer-songwriter’s 1970 track, “Mother,” also deals with his and Julia’s complicated relationship.

10. Mac Miller: “I’ll Be There”

Miller included an ode to his mother on 2011’s Best Day Ever. “My mom and I have been through a lot of s—. Me taking it upon myself to follow this dream, it caused a lot of problems with me and my mom on our day-to-day relationship. I feel like my mom is one of the best moms ever — how I’m sure everyone else feels. So I wanted to make a song speaking on that,” he said of “I’ll Be There,” he said, according to Genius.

11. Billy Joel: “Rosalinda’s Eye’s”

Joel‘s mother, Rosalind Nyman Joel, and their family history inspired this 52nd Street tune. Rosalind died in 2014 at 92 years old.

12. Bruce Springsteen: “The Wish”

Springsteen wrote “The Wish” about mom Adele Ann Springsteen. “Well tonight I’m takin’s requests here in the kitchen/ This one’s for you, Ma, let me come right out and say it,” he sings.

Rachel Zoe’s Perfect Gift For Mother’s Day

When stylist and designer Rachel Zoe noticed she was repeatedly getting asked the same questions, she decided to do something about it.

“People were always reaching out and asking, ‘What do I need? What do you love? What should I wear?’ ” Zoe tells PEOPLE.

Zoe, 45, decided to answer that question with her Box of Style, a quarterly selection of her favorite items that is valued at over $ 350 but can be purchased on her site for $ 100.

“It’s a seasonal box with really special pieces, most of which are exclusive to the Zoe Report,” the mother of two tells PEOPLE.

The spring box is available now at a discounted price just in time for Mother’s Day and includes items such as the Tribe Alive purse, Tatcha rice enzyme powder and Adornmonde earrings.

“Basically I think about what women would want to have each season,” says Zoe. “It could be a caftan for summer and a great pair of sunglasses or a beautiful necklace.”

And although the items in the box change each season, Zoe promises one thing always remains the same. “The items are always high quality and there will never be junk in it,” she says.

“There is nothing in there that you will get and think ‘oh, I am going to give this away to so and so,’ ” says Zoe. “I really think about what would women want to use, own, wear, buy and be excited about.”

Debbie Reynolds’ Last Words Show The Power Of A Mother’s Love

It seems that the loss of her daughter may have been too heavy a burden for Debbie Reynolds to bear.

The 84-year-old Hollywood icon died after suffering a stroke Wednesday, just one day after her daughter, Carrie Fisher, was pronounced dead following a heart attack.

But it’s her final words that show just how much the “Singin’ in the Rain” star loved and missed her daughter.

Todd Fisher, Reynolds’ son, told TMZ that he and Reynolds were planning Carrie Fisher’s funeral Wednesday morning when she began grieving and told him, “I miss her so much, I want to be with Carrie.”

Fisher confirmed Reynolds’ last words to E! News saying, “She went to be with Carrie. In fact, those were the last words she spoke this morning.”

After news broke of Carrie Fisher’s death on Tuesday, Reynolds thanked her daughter’s fans on Facebook for their thoughts and prayers.

Reynold’s would also often share vintage photos of her children on Facebook, giving the world a peek into their lives as Hollywood fixtures.

More recent posts promoted the release of “Bright Lights: Starring Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds,” a documentary about Reynolds, her children and their lives in show business through the decades, which will air on HBO in March.

While Reynolds’ love for her children was expressed in her last words, she could rest assured that her daughter felt the same way.

Mother and I live next door to each other, separated by one daunting hill,” Carrie Fisher explained in the upcoming documentary, as quoted by Deadline.

“I usually come to her,” Fisher added. “I always come to her.”

My Mother’s Best Friend’s Secret

My Mother’s Best Friend’s Secret

My mother’s best friend Pippa is a very attractive lady. She has long wavy brown hair, blue eyes, a nice tan, and an exceptionally fit body for a 44 year old woman. Even though she dresses in a very classy and sophisticated manner for her career in real estate, she also likes showing off her sex appeal, wearing tight fitting clothes, as well as skirts and dresses which show off her legs. She has a vibrant and outgoing personality, which has helped a lot in her career and has made her popular in many different social circles. She had been through a terrible divorce and it wasn’t long before my mother asked her to move in while she recovered and tried to make sense of her life. That was some time ago. In the recent years that we’ve been living together, I couldn’t understand why she was never in a serious relationship, despite men practically throwing themselves at her. However, all of that was about to change…

The Wealth of My Mother’s Wisdom

The Wealth of My Mother’s Wisdom

It’s amazing how much my mom did on my behalf. As a seventeen-year-old single mom with relatively little support and all the chips stacked against her, she was able to provide an incredible amount of support for me. Her lessons enriched my spirit, my emotions, and my relationship with God.”When Lisa, a seventeen-year-old from Queens, New York, found out she was pregnant, she knew she only had one choice-to keep the child and give him the best life she could. That baby was Terrence Jenkins, better known to the world as Terrence J. From hosting gigs on BET’s 106 and Park and E! News to roles in some of Hollywood’s biggest movies, Terrence J is living a life he could have only imagined when he was a young boy. But it was the lessons he learned from his mother that helped make him a man-lessons about sacrifice, courage, loyalty, dreams, and perseverance. Through her words and her actions, Lisa showed Terrence the right path. From an early age Terrence’s mother pushed him to succeed and led by example. Most important, she put her son first-even if it meant leaving behind the only life she had ever known in New York City in search of a safer environment for her son, having the drive to go back to school to learn a new skill, or having the courage to start her own business and build it from the ground up. Her drive eventually became Terrence’s drive. Inspirational, funny, current, and down-to-earth, The Wealth of My Mother’s Wisdom offers advice for a new generation. With stories, lessons, and advice from one of the top young names in Hollywood, along with input from some of his famous friends like Kevin Hart, Ludacris, T.I, Trey Songz, and Laz Alonso, Terrence J offers a positive, powerful message: with a strong family bond, the possibilities are endless.

Reese Witherspoon Has The ‘SNL’ Cast Apologize To Their Moms For Mother’s Day

We’ve all lied to our moms and put them through hell and back. But luckily Reese Witherspoon is around to remind us to apologize.

For the “Saturday Night Live” Mother’s Day episode, the “Wild” actress had each of the SNL cast members bring their mom on stage and apologize for that one awful thing they did.

From sneaking out on a date to peeing the bed (and then peeing all over the place after), there was a lot to say sorry for. But the moms got their revenge: embarrassing each of their kids on live television with old home videos.

Now go call your mom already.

Moms In Need Get Clothing, Toiletries For Their Families Just In Time For Mother’s Day

Movers around the country are helping to get essential items to mothers in need, just in time for Mother’s Day.

Two Men and a Truck, a moving company, has been hosting annual donation drives across the U.S. for mothers at partnering women’s and family shelters as part of an initiative called “Movers for Moms.” The group is delivering the items, which will include clothing and toiletries, around Sunday.

One homeless mother who requested to be anonymous is currently staying at the Druid House in Baltimore, one of the shelters involved. She told HuffPost that the initiative is more than a nice gesture.

“Especially as mothers with children, we don’t want [our children] to see us struggling with the basic needs,” she said. “When somebody has made that effort to provide those things to you … it might seem like something so small but it really gets rid of some of the concern and the stresses.”

collection drive

A variety of organizations, schools and local businesses are working with Two Men and a Truck to contribute items or serve as donation drop-off locations, according to a representative of the company. Items donated can range from basic clothing like underwear or socks, to hygiene products such as toothpaste and soap. Last year, Movers for Moms donated 220,000 goods to mothers in need, a press release pointed out.

The Druid House resident told HuffPost that buying items like toothpaste and soap isn’t so simple for people in her position. She explained that because people at the shelter may have difficulty traveling to a convenience store, or have little income, some of these products are not as accessible as one may think.

“You’re thinking ‘How are you gonna get it” or ‘Where are you gonna get it?’ ‘How are you going to afford it?’ ‘How are you going to get to the store?'” she told HuffPost of the complications preventing her from purchasing necessities.

The resident told HuffPost that she’s grateful for the donations, and it’s a moving thought to know that people are willing to help her and others in need.

“When people work together to do those things, it really lets you know that somebody cares. And the children feel it too,” she said. “They are so happy and excited when they know somebody is caring about them, and sometimes you just need to know that.”

Kanye West Bought Kim Kardashian ‘A Couple Thousand’ Roses For Mother’s Day

Even though Kim Kardashian is spending Mother’s Day in Brazil, away from husband Kanye West and their 1-year-old daughter, North, the rapper made sure his wife felt appreciated on the special holiday.

The “Keeping Up With The Kardashians” star shared a photo of a room filled with bouquets of white roses to her Instagram account Sunday, writing:

I got to my room in Brazil and my amazing thoughtful husband had the sweetest note with a couple thousand roses covering my entire suite for Mothers Day! I’m so sad I’m so far away on this day but happy we celebrated yesterday! I love you baby & North soooo much!!!

Sweet? Yes. Over the top? Maybe. Surprising? Not really, especially considering what the rapper got for Kardashian on this day last year:

The 34-year-old reality TV star made sure to post tributes to her mother and grandmother to commemorate the occasion. See all the photos below:

Mixed Feelings About Mothers’ Day

Mother’s Day was created, probably by Hallmark Cards, to honor our mothers. I’ve never taken the day too seriously, but lately I find it more compelling. I am a mother and a grandmother and my mother is still alive. She has lived a long life. She’s the first to tell you she’s outlived her time. She’s 95 years old. The way she sees it her body is “disgustingly healthy, but her mind is another matter.” She has advanced dementia. As Mother’s Day has come and gone, I have my own conflicted feelings about Mom’s long life. I prefer not to examine her mind, as it can be painful to focus on that. Rather, I will tell you about her feet.

Mom’s attitude toward her feet is a jumble of contradictions. Going barefoot has always been her preference at all times, in all places, at each stage of her long life. She delights in people’s reactions to her naked toes when she roams the long hallways of her most recent home in an assisted living retirement facility. The friendly nursing aides react with an amused air of disapproval,

“Ms. Fleisher, where do you think you’re going? You need to put on your shoes!”

“Why?” she responds, “I’m not going anywhere.”

Throughout her adult life, she would go outside in winter all bundled up, a petite woman swathed in a long heavy sheepskin coat with curly fur around her neck. But, those tiny pale feet were always bone bare inside her wooden clogs.

Always one to be dressed in the latest style, her shoes were all the rage, but often raised eyebrows when worn by someone her age. Four-inch wooden platform open-toed shoes held in place by a single leather strap were the shoes of choice at her granddaughter’s out-door wedding. Everyone in attendance held their breath as my 83 year old mother hobbled along the rutted dirt path leading to the wedding tent–in the rain, clasping her son’s arm for balance. By the middle of the ceremony her feet were bare, and with assistance, she made her way back to the car gingerly stepping through mud and gravel. Age never was a factor for her when choosing what should adorn her feet.

Now in her mid nineties, she’s a feisty tiny woman with clumps of gray thinning hair. She may not remember what she ate two minutes ago, but she has glowing memories of her athletic prowess in adolescence. Her blue eyes, framed by deep laugh lines, sparkle proudly when she tells stories of her number one seeded position on the district tennis ladder. She was known as the girl who played barefoot on the manicured grass courts reserved for the top ranked tennis matches. Her bare feet carry a message of pride and rebellion. “I’ll be damned if you are going to tell me what to do!”

On close inspection, her feet are a curious oddity. Her big toes are small, but strong. And each toe thereafter is bent toward the outside edge of the foot, as if broken at mid-point. “Ugly!” is what she calls them. Ugly, like the way she feels about the rest of her small muscular body with a belly that is always too big. Ugly may be her descriptor, but she flaunts those feet openly in public as if to say, “They may be ugly, but they are strong and proud and free-spirited. They never did enough for me to love them, but if I could have I would have.”

As I’ve watched my mother grow old I realize how little control we have about how long we are fated to live. I’ve changed my thinking about the goal of a long life. Quality of life is more important to me. And how much control do we have over that? Still, I hope I will have the kind of spirit and pride Mom shows the world despite her certainty that she has outlived her time.

Grateful for My Mom’s Legacy this Mother’s Day

As both a mom and a daughter whose mother has passed away, Mother’s Day is always a bittersweet time for me. While I enjoy being celebrated by my son and husband, I miss my mother dearly. Each day of my life her legacy and influence live on through my parenting, family traditions, cooking, education and style. So many of our viewers reach out to me asking about the necklaces I wear on my show. What they might not know is that my mother is the inspiration behind the statement necklaces I wear each day.

I have to wear a robe, but I still like to be a jazzy judge! I inherited my love of jewelry and interesting statement necklaces from my mom. My late mother was very stylish in an understated, classy way, but she loved wearing beautiful, interesting neckpieces. A bold necklace is a great way to create a stylish focal point for any kind of outfit.

I carry on my mother’s flair for fashion by wearing some of her pieces and designing almost all of the others. And, almost every piece I have worn on the show is a one-of-a-kind creation. For me, the necklaces hold a special meaning and are more than just a fashionable piece of jewelry. My necklaces not only remind me of my mother, they are a symbol and reflection of the colorful, bold, unique woman she raised me to be. All of the words of encouragement and affirmation concerning my necklaces has inspired me to create a line of necklaces and other statement pieces.

I hope you enjoy your Mother’s Day! I’d love to hear how you celebrate your mom or keep her legacy alive limitlessly.

Happy Mother’s Day!

What is a Mother? A mother has soft hands and smells good; she likes new clothes, music and a clean house and above all loves the hugs and kisses of her children. She does not like to see her children sick, with muddy feet, temper tantrums, loud voices and bad report cards. She can bake good cakes and pies but likes to see her children eat vegetables. She is someone who is underpaid, works long hours and gets very little rest. She worries a lot about her children, no matter how old her children are, she does not seem to mind at all.

A mother is the Guardian Angel of the family, the queen, the untiring supplier of unconditional love; she will always be our best friend forever and the only one who can make our households-our homes!

In big ways and small, mothers always seem to know exactly what to do to help and guide us through our lives. Call it wisdom, call it unconditional love – whatever it is, mothers really do have a special gift. The incredible effort that they make in raising children without complaint is in itself quite unbelievable.

When it comes to my own memories about my mother, I recall her innocence, her loving nature, her childlike curiosity and appreciation of new experiences and sensations.
It was as if the child within her had never been lost! She was just a pure, beautiful and loving soul who was dedicated to making everyone around her feel good.

When I was a child, my mother seemed to have a quick cure for all my ailments, tiny scratches and even big bruises. I missed that, once I had to be away from her to get on with the business of adulthood.

I missed her most when I suffered my first heart attack. Although she would have been beside herself if she had witnessed this event, nonetheless, I wished and thought about no one else except my mother. Modern society deems it unnatural and unmanly to openly express the love for our mothers. I dare to suggest quite to the contrary, it takes a real man to be sincere in his love for that one person who introduced him to the world! Who could be more important?

After returning home after the hospital stay, I wanted to re-evaluate my blessings, and focus on all the positive things in my life. There was a small piece of paper that became a gentle foundation for this goal, a handwritten entry from my late mother’s diary. A couple of years after my mother had passed away, my two sisters were looking through her possessions deciding what to give away and what to keep. In the closet, they came across a small diary, through which, out of curiosity, they began to browse, flipping the pages, pausing to read here and there. One page caught their eye–it was an entry about me. She had written about how much happiness I had brought into her life, how I had never talked back or raised my voice to her. Essentially, she was honoring me by reciting the little things that I had done to give her joy. The page ended with prayers and blessings for me now and in the afterlife.

Immediately, my sisters made a photocopy and sent it to me. As I read it, I felt the simplicity and sincerity of her words. The journal entry was not a reaction to having received a nice gift, card, or phone call from me. It was not intended to impress anyone or to ask a favor. It was just a note jotted down during her quiet moments as she mused privately over our relationship as mother and son. It was merely an evanescent acknowledgement passing through her heart, penned onto the pages of her private diary. I folded it carefully and tucked it away in a special spot so that I could retrieve it during difficult and discouraging times in my life when I might need some uplifting. I now cherish this little document as the very best Letter of Recommendation I have ever received among a file folder of accolades from high-level management over the years.

No matter what unwise decisions I had made, my mom had supported me every single time, with no questions asked. She trusted me more than I trusted myself. I believe in unconditional love and living in the moment-this I learned from my Mom. I honor your memories Mom, every day and on this Mother’s Day with love in my heart and with never ending gratitude in my soul.

Celebrating Mother’s Day As a Motherless Daughter

Mother’s Day. A time of celebrating the amazing woman who gave you life, nurtured and inspired you. Your biggest supporter and fiercest defender.

Like myself and many of my clients, I have spent much of my life grieving for that mother. Not because she died, but because she never existed.

How do you celebrate your mother when she is no longer in your life, either by death or choice?

As a coach and former therapist, I have worked with countless women whose relationships with their mothers have been anything but the ideal depicted on greeting cards.

In these cases, Mother’s Day can be a day of disappointment, loss, and reminders of what you don’t have.

Family dysfunction can take on many forms. In my work, some common themes are a mother who didn’t pay attention to signs of abuse; dismissed her child’s (subtle or direct) cry for help; created an environment of neglect; and sometimes struggled with her own mental health issues.

There are times it is necessary to step back or end a relationship with your mother for the benefit of your own emotional health, well-being, and happiness. While it is generally a very difficult decision, fraught with fear and guilt, sometimes it is necessary.

Finding a way to set boundaries and grieving the loss of a relationship you never really had is an important part of healing from childhood abuse and dysfunction.

In my case, I grieve the mother I never had, due to chronic depression leading to neglect and the one who died when I was 23. I will never have the opportunity to have that relationship.

While you may never have that relationship with your mother, it is possible to experience nurturing relationships with people who inspire you and become your biggest supporter and fiercest defender. You just have to allow yourself the time to grieve and be open to allowing those people in your life.

Is Mother’s Day a struggle for you? Do you have difficulty finding a card that accurately represents your relationship? If so, make time this Sunday for you. Take some time to provide for yourself the nurturing, loving experience you deserve.

Here’s Why I Am My Mother’s Daughter

I was nothing like my mother. She was shy and elegant. She covered her mouth when she laughed.

She didn’t understand how someone like her could have given birth to someone like me. She didn’t understand where my confidence came from, or how, at five years old, I could have an opinion about the kind of car I’d prefer to be driven in to nursery school. A coupe.

She said she was never scared for me because I was tough.

That I’d get what I wanted out of life because I wouldn’t settle for anything less. That no one would ever take advantage of me — and good luck to the person who tried.

My mother told me to understand that not everyone would like me, but I would be deeply loved by those who did. She told me to always be compassionate; that was my weakness. To be compassionate with people who were weaker, or meeker, or just scared of life. To have compassion for people who weren’t as brave.

She told me to be gentler with my older sister, because she wasn’t built like me; she was more sensitive. That, even though I was the youngest, my sense of self was the strongest. When I’d complain that it was my sister’s fault for not standing her ground, she would reply, “Wouldn’t you get out of the way if you saw you coming?”

My mother knew who I was before I did.

She said I was my father’s daughter.

A few days before she died, my mom grabbed my hand and said, “Please take care of your brothers and sisters, because I know you’ll be able to one day. Keep our family together.” And then added, “your father’s a huge pain in the ass, by the way… You’ll see.”

She died when she was 66, with five of her children holding her hand. Only one of us was missing that day in the room we all sat in, though I knew deep in my heart that he too was there to take her hand the moment it slid out of ours.

He was her oldest, her firstborn. She had had to live through that loss and continue loving us.

I don’t know enough to understand what that must be like for a parent. Or what it means to be a parent, for that matter. But, I do know what it’s like to be loved, because my mother showed me what that meant, even when she should have been out of love herself.

She said that being a mother was like getting your heart broken a million times a day…

Mom,

I’m 40 now, an age I never thought I’d be.

I hope you’re smiling at me with that flirty little “I’ve eaten something I shouldn’t have eaten” smile. My version of that little smile usually implies something much more naughty than a Snicker’s bar, but you already know that.

There have been days that I’ve picked up the phone to call you, and then remembered. But it doesn’t matter, because I know you’re here. I still feel you.

I did everything you asked me to do. I haven’t exactly nailed the “compassion” part, but I think about it every day, and then, I try again.

You were right. About everything. You knew me before I knew me.

You were right about Dad.

I’m smiling back at you. For the love, the adoration and the belief.

I believe in you, too.

My heart is full.

I know now that I am my mother’s daughter.

To every mother on Mother’s Day.

Thank you for teaching us how to love.

I Am An Invisible Mom: A Mother’s Day Love Story For My Stillborn Son

I spent last Mother’s Day lounging on a picnic blanket under the sunny skies of the Boston Harbor — so sunny, in fact, that my husband and I sought out one of the only meager trees atop Spectacle Island for shade. It can often be cool in early May in Boston, but on this day, the heat bore down. At 16 weeks pregnant, the shape of my rounded belly under my striped sundress was only obvious to those in our inner circle who knew we were expecting. The word itself — expecting — pregnant with meaning. We were expecting so many things on that Sunday afternoon: Our first child to join our family in the fall. A little boy.

2015-05-08-1431121124-671069-IMG_0070.JPG

I consider myself an invisible mom; identifying with emotions of motherhood without the visible passport. I cannot take my son to the park or feed him in the wee hours or read him a bedtime story. As a culture that values tangibles, I do not fit into any recognizable group. If I answer that I have kids (a question I’m asked all too often), it’s assumed that I have a living child. The follow-up conversation is just too intense, too blunt, that I simply cannot stand to burden the person asking such a standard question with such a heavy answer. But responding that I do not have children discredits the time I spent loving my son, caring for him and nurturing him as all moms do. That answer minimizes his life. And boy, his life was anything but small by measure of how it has impacted mine.

Us invisible moms are everywhere, part of a compulsory club of which none of us wants to be a member. But unlike other moms, there are not playdates or moms groups or school meetings for our kind. We so often live our life in isolation, alienated by very holidays like Mother’s Day, where sitting at brunch alongside bustling families is pure torture. There will be no handmade card or mother’s ring or any of the hallmarks that Hallmark make standard for this second Sunday in May.

But as a mom, even an invisible one, I have a love story. After all, that’s what moms do. We love, unconditionally.

***

On an early June evening at a restaurant overlooking the Bosphorus Straight in Istanbul, we decided that we were ready to start our family. It was 2011 and we were entering our fourth year of marriage, having spent the first three years enjoying our young relationship and establishing our careers. But the summer came and went, and so did the one after that. We saw a fertility doctor, learned that things were sub-optimal but not dismal, and drew up a treatment plan. Month after month of treatments, each one more invasive than the last. Nothing. But we were great candidates from IVF, and I just knew that would work. I still felt a sense of control here — if I can just endure the physical and emotional gauntlet that is IVF, I know we will be rewarded with a baby.

And rewarded we were! In mid-February of last year, we learned we were finally pregnant. We met our baby at our four-week ultrasound where we very clearly we watched a mighty heart flicker rapidly on the screen. This heart was contained in a body no bigger than a grain of rice. Awestruck love. There are simply no words to describe the emotion of that experience; watching a beating heart inside of my body that will one day power our child. Power him while he chases the cat or does cartwheels in the front lawn or takes a nap in his sunlit nursery. Beat strongly as he walks to his first day of kindergarten or falls for his first crush or marries and has children of his own. That little flicker will be there through everything. After we left the doctor we could not stop gushing about that little flicker — our little Flicker — and thus his nickname was born.

Late on a Friday afternoon in April, we went to the doctor for the ever-important 12-week ultrasound, a date that so many circle on their calendar as the first big landmark in a healthy pregnancy. The ultrasound technician read the images, but uncharacteristically left the room for what seemed like an eternity. She returned, accompanied by our doctor, who assured us that there was likely nothing wrong. A strange shadow on the grainy ultrasound raised some alarm, but don’t panic; it’s probably just the placenta. But if we want to be 100% sure going into the sunny weekend, we can head to high resolution imaging and get a cleaner look.

It will put our minds at ease, she said.

We left in silence, and for the next hour I lay on the examination table feeling utterly helpless as an awful doctor proceeded to shake her head over and over again. All loaded sighs and furrowed brows. “Something is just not right,” she said repeatedly once she finally found her words. She arranged an appointment for first thing Monday morning at one of Boston’s leading maternal fetal medicine hospitals and sent us on our way.

We were not at ease.

We left that afternoon a ball of chaos, shaken to the core, questioning everything. We questioned God. We questioned what we did wrong. We questioned whether the doctor could possibly be right. She had to be wrong. This had to be a mistake. We talked with our families and pastors and friends over that weekend. We prayed and processed and speculated during a long walk around Walden Pond, Thoreau’s sacred retreat.

“Sympathy with the fluttering alder and poplar leaves almost takes away my breath; yet, like the lake, my serenity is rippled but not ruffled.”
– Henry David Thoreau, Walden

Coming out of all of our conversations from that surreal weekend, it seemed that everyone had a horror story of their own or of a one-degree connection in which they received a bad pregnancy prognosis, only to point out their beautiful son or daughter playing in the next room. While we weren’t counting on the doctor we would see Monday saying “just kidding, he is perfect,” we had come to terms with the possibility of raising a child with special needs or having to manage a high-risk pregnancy. Hope rippled, but not ruffled.

We walked in to that appointment unified and resolute. But I laid down for the ultrasound, and within 15 seconds the head of maternal fetal medicine looked me in the eye and said “incompatible with life.”

The agony that followed involved genetic counselors and placenta biopsies and waiting for tests. We learned were having a boy. And his chromosomes were perfect. His heart was strong and his brain was developing. But his spine was bent and he had no abdominal wall; his feet were clubbed and he had a cleft palate. The list of issues kept growing and my hope kept shrinking until we got our final diagnosis — limb body-wall complex. “Don’t Google it,” the doctor warned. But of course I did. And I cried for days. A lightning-strike rare condition that had no genetic link, no known cause, no available treatment, and no survivors. There were so few documented cases of this condition that our doctors could assure us of nothing. I might miscarry tomorrow. I might carry to full term. Flicker might be born alive and never take a breath, or he could be born still. We were essentially sent home to wait again; but this time wait for our son to die.

Where is the love in that?

***

When I think about all the ways that people can show love to one another, it’s generally through some combination of action, word or in our culture, gift. My husband and I are not big gift people, typically choosing instead to communicate love through everyday word and action. He is a big fan of food, so a well-cooked meal prepared with his favorite ingredients is one way that I show love. Meanwhile, he knows that I do not like doing dishes, so after the meal is cooked he springs into action to clean up the mess, a definitive showing of his love to me. It is not the stuff of storybooks, but it’s how our love works. We are a family of do-ers, preferring daily service to the more abstract concepts of love and care.

This pragmatist’s orientation toward doing love made loving Flicker incredibly difficult in those first few weeks after receiving his terminal diagnosis. If he was sick or injured outside the womb, we would have taken him to the best doctors and nursed him back to health. If he was hungry, we would have fed him whatever it would take to satisfy and nourish. If he was scared, we would have wrapped him up in safety and reassurance. But with him in the womb sick and injured, we simply could not do a thing. No doctor could fix him. No nutrition could fortify him. No physical touch could comfort and re-assure him. I was so powerless, a feeling that absolutely slayed me. Love became abstract, which was something all-together unfamiliar.

Eventually, though, I came to important realization: I was simply a mom living out unconditional love without reciprocity. What all moms do.

But to say that I had no tangible way to experience love with Flicker would not be truthful. Shortly after our diagnosis, a dear friend brought us a truly wonderful gift — a fetal heart monitor — which allowed us to listen to Flicker’s heart flicker, pulse, thump and gallop any time on demand. Flicker’s flicker became my lifeline to him, urging me to get out of bed each day and live life with him. It would be a life robbed of so many experiences, but a life nonetheless. I talked to him throughout my workday. We went on walks almost every night. My belly grew and it was impossible to conceal his little life from the public. I began writing to him as a way to process and reflect.

2015-05-08-1431122267-5629235-IMG_0245.jpg

I will not deceive in claiming that this time was all rainbows. It was very, very hard at times. A sentiment about parenthood to which I think all moms, invisible or otherwise, can relate.

Before I met Flicker, my idea of balance was more aligned with the notion of steadiness. That is, not allowing myself to get too low or too high so that I can maintain a somewhat consistent state of general well-being. This trait had been one of much ribbing and confusion amongst my family, most of whom have never been quick to attach themselves to the concept of moderation. My mother does everything unapologetically BIG — talks, laughs, cooks, loves, projects, exaggerates, misbehaves — it’s what she’s known for and what draws people immediately to her. Let’s just say the apple does not fall far from the tree when analyzing the rest of the family. Consequently, my bent toward practicality and boundaries has always been a source of mystery.

But in this new normal of carrying a terminal pregnancy, steadiness was simply not possible. I also do not think it would have been healthy to repress the urges to feel the extremes. Our day-to-day was about living in the present; taking in whatever good, bad or otherwise greeted us in the moment. We learned to toe a narrow line that represented the collective average of this unpredictable oscillation between darkness and light. Dark: A horrible appointment with the NICU doctors where we were reminded of realities of his diagnosis in cold, heartless medical parlance. Light: A light-hearted beach day on Cape Cod with good friends followed by a scoop of the best homemade ginger ice cream I’ve ever had. Dark: Waking up on Mother’s Day knowing that I am going to be a mom to a boy in Heaven. Light: Spending Mother’s Day afternoon on Spectacle Island as a family, picnicking, reading and resting on a shaded hill overlooking the Boston harbor. Dark. Light. Dark. Light. And on and on we went. Over time, I gained an understanding of what this place of equilibrium felt like — seeking out joy without any tinges of guilt amidst this backdrop of sadness.

Every morning for the next three-plus months before I would get out of bed, we turned on the heart monitor and listened to Flicker. His heartbeat became our language; we could hear his, he could here mine. Beautiful. But on July 23rd, there was no heartbeat. I was 27 weeks pregnant, and I was furious. God, you were supposed to give me more time. He was supposed to be born alive. We have been so faithful. We have cared for this life and nurtured it the best we could. We have bonded with him and feel so cheated. Where is the love here?

But in a point of reflection more than nine months later, I can say that Flicker’s death was surrounded by so much love. His delivery was simply miraculous — there were some very scary potential scenarios, a near guarantee of a complicated c-section and just so many unknowns. But he came so very peacefully, no surgery, no complications. When they brought him to me to hold, it was clear that his earthly body had simply failed him. Had he been born alive, I just know he would have been in extreme pain, which would have been traumatic for both him and me. Instead, he passed away in peace, knowing only the protection of the womb. He would never have to confront bullies or naysayers or doubters. He would only know love. Of course, I have no way of knowing if Flicker felt the love that enveloped him during his brief life, but it gives me peace to imagine that he does. So that is what I am choosing to believe.

Motherhood is wrought with questions: Will he happy? Will he succeed? Will he have my husband’s thick hair? Will he play tennis like me? Will he love us? Will he love others? Will he contribute to the good of the world? Will he…..

I experienced the uncertainty of motherhood too, but my narrative is just a little different. I will never get answers to these questions, and will never experience the great gift of watching Flicker navigate through life here. But one unequivocal given in motherhood is that moms love their children, unconditionally. By that definition, I am a mom. Just an invisible one.

Today I wish all moms, invisible or otherwise, a very happy Mother’s Day.

On Mother’s Day, Remembering Mothers Without Living Children

Mother’s Day evokes bittersweet emotions in bereaved mothers everywhere. The pain of loss may be especially poignant for mothers without living children. Memories of loss transposed onto a world awash in flowers and greeting cards leaves women reeling. Too often, their experience of motherhood is largely unacknowledged by society. Taking place in May, a month that pulses with such tremulous beauty in long-awaited spring, Mother’s Day can threaten to break the best of us.

Says Toni Brabec, whose only baby daughter Olivia died in 2013:

Before, I saw Mother’s Day like most people do. A special day to honor our mothers… [I]’d pick out cards, a small gift… Now on Mother’s Day, I would rather stay in or just have a small gathering… [F]or me, who has no evidence of children other than the photos in my house, I am overlooked and/or it is assumed I am not a mother at all… it is difficult because in my heart, I know I am a mother. But the world doesn’t always see it like that.

This is what loving family and friends can consider doing to help support mothers without living children coping with loss.

1. Do acknowledge and affirm her standing as mother.
You can absolutely include bereaved mothers in Mother’s Day events. This may feel initially awkward, but it truly is both appropriate and helpful. The tone of inclusion may feel a bit more subdued, but the mother without living children should have her heroic struggle to mourn, remember, and find meaning marked. She will decline if she is not comfortable, but she will appreciate the invitation.

2. Do send a card.
It is comforting to receive an acknowledgement in the mail regarding loss. These cards are evidence of the existence of babies gone too soon, and these apparently slight things carry precious love to shore up mothers mourning and remembering.

3. Don’t try to talk her out of grief.
Resist the impulse to try to make her feel better. Instead, let her miss her child. Most expressions of grief that tow with them an undercurrent of the “at least,” will only inadvertently push the bereaved away.

4. Do ask her questions about her loss/her birth/her stillbirth.
Depending upon your relationship to the bereaved, dialogue can be helpful. It promotes the integration of grief and complex healing. Loss, when processed, can reveal phenomenally painful truths about being alive. However, the other side of the pain is the recognition of the beauty that is also inherent in living. Bereaved mothers don’t take much for granted. They can teach a great deal in this regard.

5. Do take care to acknowledge the loss of their baby.
If you see a Facebook post pertaining to loss, the mother is reaching out. Go ahead and comment — add your voice to the supportive community. You may not know what to say, but “I am thinking of you,” is a powerful statement.

Part of the isolation born of perinatal loss is the lack of shared memories. It is for this reason that efforts to invite the sharing of memories have great import. The bereaved mother is working to find her place in a whole new world. It is a lonely journey and she does appreciate the company.

Young Women Pose In Their Mothers’ Wedding Dresses, Exploring The Mythic Power Of A Gown

There’s something strangely magical about wedding gowns, the white dresses infused with fantastical (if not slightly old fashioned or misguided) ideas about femininity, purity and love. Quite often, young women look up to their mothers as models of this romantic reverie, their dresses serving as matriarchal symbols, ghostly remnants of a crucial event they are intimately linked to though did not experience physically.

In her photography series “The Line,” French photographer Céline Bodin engages with the beautiful and somewhat strange mystique of the notable white dress, exploring the complex roles a clothing garment plays in the lives of both mother and daughter.

the line

“The images engage with our notion of purity, challenging our perception and the equation it immediately operates,” Bodin explained to The Huffington Post. “The apparent cleanness acts as camouflage and unsettles the apprehension of our customs’ determinatives. Echoing icons, the portraits quietly recall religious purity and aim to question what exactly defines such incarnation and where does its essence lie: is it within the dress, the person, the vision, or the idea?”

For the series, Bodin enlisted young women she already knew as her subjects, whether family friends or previous models. Their first task was convincing their mothers to let them wear the dresses for the shoot, an endeavor which in itself proved challenging for some. Just the difficulty involved in persuading the former brides to wear the sentimental attire speaks to its unusual, and almost mythic power.

ahnds

“The resulting portrait might be one of both mother and daughter,” Bodin continued. “With melancholy it highlights an absence that can only find reality in each girl’s imagination, fed by the detail of the lace, the small holes and stains left on the dress, the old wedding photographs they might have seen. Confronting time and generations, the models silently re-enact a past they can only fantasize, allowing themselves to embody the archetypal role.”

Bodin’s photos subtly address many assumptions latently associated with wedding dresses, like the outmoded understandings of purity that, though far less relevant in the younger generation than in their mothers’, still lives on in the lore of the wedding dress.

The images, captured intensely against a white backdrop, appear at first almost like advertisements, with the subjects staring boldly straight ahead. Yet upon closer investigation, small imperfections, both in the dress and the images themselves, begin to appear. The photographs expose the tears and holes in the dominant narrative of the perfect wedding, while still lingering on the beauty of the fantasy itself.

7 Sacred Mothers To Celebrate An Interfaith Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day offers the perfect opportunity to celebrate mother goddesses and sacred mothers from different faiths. These holy and divine figures capture some of the important qualities mothers can embody for us — on Mother’s Day and every other day of the year.

As York University researcher Johanna H. Stuckey points out, mother goddesses often encompass many more divine traits than their motherhood alone. But motherhood does play an integral role in their cosmic stories, as well as in the lives of mothers, women and men who worship them.

Here are 7 mother goddesses and sacred mothers from 7 world traditions:

Durga (Hindu)
durga

Durga is the supreme Mother Goddess in Hinduism who represents unified divine energy. In addition to her compassion, Durga is a fierce destroyer of injustice. When evil forces threatened the existence of the gods, they came together to bring Durga into being — only she had the power to defeat the demons and save the gods. To her worshippers, Durga removes fear and obstacles and always aids those who call on her.

Virgin Mary (Christian)
virgin mary

Though not considered to be a goddess, the Virgin Mary hold the key role of sacred mother in the Christian faith. Like her son, Mary came into the world through a miraculous conception, and her role in Jesus’ life, death and resurrection make her a highly venerated figure among Christians, and particularly among Catholics.

Pachamama (South American indigenous)
pachamama

Pachamama is a Mother Earth goddess venerated by indigenous South American Andean traditions. She embodies health, happiness and fortune, as well as the powerful, life-giving properties of nature. Activists have also invoked Pachamama’s name to draw indigenous groups into the rainforest conservation movement.

Tara (Buddhist)
tara

Among her many traits, the Buddhist goddess Tara is often referred to as the “Mother of all Buddhas.” She embodies compassion, wisdom and purity, and in some depictions she has seven eyes that allow her to see all the suffering in the world. Some worshippers refer to her as Mother Tara, whose love is even greater than a mother’s for her children.

Mother Goddess (Wiccan)
full moon

Some Wiccan and neopagan traditions worship the triple goddess, characterized as the Maiden, the Mother and the Crone. These three faces of the goddess coincide with the waxing, full and waning moon cycles, respectively, and each embody different traits of the divine feminine. The goddess’ incarnation as Mother represents fertility but also more generally abundance, growth and personal fulfillment.

Demeter (Ancient Greek)
demeter

Demeter is a goddess from the ancient Greek pantheon whose name literally means “Earth Mother” (or in some translations, “Corn Mother.”) Demeter presides over farming and agriculture, particularly the cultivation of grains. She is also revered as the devoted mother of Persephone and for searching far and wide for her daughter who was captured by Hades.

Yemaya (Yoruba)
yemaya

Yemaya is a powerful orisha, or deity, in Santeria and is considered to be the mother of all things. Yemaya gave birth to the sun, moon, stars and many of the other orishas, and she is nurturing and fiercely protective over her children. She is closely connected to water and sea as powerful life forces on Earth, and she is said to carry all experiences of women within her.

My Mother’s Best Advice: 7 Ways to Create a Happy, Healthy Life

My mother shaped the woman I would become, the family I would create and the business I would build. She taught me to find my passion; ask “Why not?”; make mistakes; and nurture the mind-body-spirit connection. In this month that celebrates motherhood, I’d like to share some of my mother’s best advice.

Find your passion:
My mother introduced me to dance at the age of 2. I was pigeon-toed and the doctor prescribed dance classes along with corrective shoes. I discovered very early that dance was my passion and would become my life’s work. My mother recognized my talent and devoted herself to nurturing it. She took me to weekly classes in our very small town of Red Oak, Iowa. She also drove me 100 miles roundtrip two times each week to a professional dance studio in Omaha, Nebraska. Without her I may never have realized my passion for dance and the role it would play in my life.

Don’t accept limitations:
My mother earned an associate’s degree in business with a concentration in accounting, something uncommon for a woman in the 1930s. She was liberated before her time. When our town’s only dance teacher moved away my mother went to Omaha and recruited another teacher to take her place. She set up a business for her by finding a place for her to teach, doing her accounting, producing recitals, sewing costumes, and doing local marketing to bring in students.

When I was 11, I started my own dance studio in our remodeled basement. My mother once again went to work, this time helping her daughter set up and manage the business. Within three months I had 100 students. Though we didn’t realize it at the time, she had given me the business model that I would use to build Jazzercise.

Believe you can:
When I graduated from college and decided to start my own dance fitness business in Chicago it felt like second nature. I had watched my mother do it. I knew the model worked. I knew I could develop a program that would help women achieve their fitness goals, build their own businesses, support one another, and feel good doing it. She taught me to be an entrepreneur.

Let “Why not?” be your mantra:
I watched my mother tackle problems and create solutions on the fly. To give her daughter the opportunity to dance my mother inadvertently became an entrepreneur. She didn’t have a “plan” and didn’t let that stop her. She didn’t indulge in self doubt. She just kept moving forward. She believed in herself and she believed in me. That confidence took root. It gave me faith in myself and others.

Encourage accountability:
My mother never pushed me to dance. She told me explicitly that if it wasn’t what I wanted to do then I could stop and do something else. Knowing I had the freedom to take a different path made it easier to keep going. But she made sure I practiced, and she even practiced with me. She believed in the importance of working hard to refine talent rather than relying on it.

Make mistakes:
My mother showed me the importance of giving children the space to make their own choices — good and bad. When I tested her, there were consequences, but she let me be in charge of my decisions. It’s difficult to see your child fail, get hurt or make mistakes, but that’s usually how they learn to be their best selves. Protecting them from consequences takes away their ability to handle adversity as well as their dignity.

Connect the mind, body and spirit:
This is one of my mother’s best lessons. Nurture your mind through education, working and surrounding yourself with people who challenge you in a positive way. Feed your spirit with meditation, spontaneity, doing what you love, being of service, and giving to others. Take care of your body with exercise, healthy eating and sleep. Strengthen your body so it can maintain the connection.

My mother, June Nelson Sheppard, taught me that as a person, a parent and a businesswoman all you can do is your best. And if you do it right, it can be fun! I’m proud to pass on my mother’s legacy to my daughter, son and granddaughters, and now to you. Let’s take a moment to honor mothers in all their many forms. I wish your family a very happy Mother’s Day!

Judi Sheppard Missett, who turned her love of jazz dance into a worldwide dance exercise phenomenon, founded the Jazzercise dance fitness program in 1969. The workout program, which offers a fusion of jazz dance, resistance training, Pilates, yoga, and cardio box movements, has positively affected millions of people worldwide. The international franchise business hosts a network of 7,800 instructors teaching more than 32,000 classes weekly in 32 countries. For more information, visit jazzercise.com.
