Abbie Cornish Talks Movie Production at Elie Saab Show

PRODUCTIVE WORK: Abbie Cornish is turning her hand to movie production. The Australian actress will be producing the upcoming “The Color of Flesh,” due to begin shooting Stateside next year, she revealed at the Elie Saab show on Saturday afternoon, where she joined guests including French actress Emmanuelle Béart.
“It’s kind of fun to be able to be on the other side,” said Cornish of her new role.
She will also have a starring part in the movie. “I play the portrait painter for Marie-Antoinette; it’s a love triangle between my character, Elisa, Marie-Antoinette and Count Alexis,” she revealed.
Otherwise, Cornish has been busy of late. She has no less than six movies coming out over the next six months, including Dean Devlin’s thriller “Geostorm,” due out Oct. 20, and comic drama “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” set for release in November.
It was the first time in a while that Cornish had attended a fashion week event, she said. “I haven’t been doing anything like this for a few years, I’ve literally just been working. I just took two months’ holiday – I did nothing, it was amazing, but it took me a couple of weeks just to learn the art of doing nothing.”

Levy made it clear that he isn’t interested in simply doing a straight-up adaptation of the games – citing his experience of “bad” or simply “decent but unsuccessful” video game adaptations – and says that he and Tom Holland are both approaching the film from the same angle.

Movie Magic! Liam Hemsworth and Rebel Wilson Kiss in the Rain While Filming Latest Comedy

It’s romantic — and a little funny!

Liam Hemsworth and Rebel Wilson were spotted kissing in the rain while filming a scene for their latest movie Isn’t it Romantic in New York City this week. The Aussie actors got all dressed up as they stepped in front of a green screen to shoot what seems to be a pivotal romantic scene between the two stars, with Wilson, 37, wearing a stunning red dress and Hemsworth, 27, sporting a suit and tie.

The movie centers around a woman who finds herself stuck in a romantic comedy after becoming disillusioned with love. Filming has been underway in New York for weeks as Wilson was previously spotted with Priyanka Chopra and Adam DeVine.

The comedy reunites DeVine and Wilson after appearing together in both Pitch Perfect movies and Comedy Central’s Workaholics.

Strangers Come Together to Help Man With Down Syndrome Rebuild His Movie Collection After Fire

When a raging wildfire destroyed Mark Orsillo’s home and prized movie collection, strangers from around the country rallied together on Facebook to make sure that the 34-year-old man with Down Syndrome wouldn’t have to wait to begin rebuilding.

Orsillo and his parents only had about 20 minutes to evacuate their Oroville, California home as the fire approached on Saturday night. Danielle Devine, Orsillo’s sister, rushed to help her brother gather his belongings. Devine was able to fill two bags, but she knew she needed to rescue a portion of Orsillo’s collection of 300 movies. With time running out and no room to spare, she was only able to save about 20 DVDs. Her parents, Pastors Steve and Vicki Orsillo, saved what they were able to throw into their car.

When the family returned, they saw that the house they had lived in for 27 years—a house that Steve Orsillo built—was completely incinerated, and nothing was salvageable. “Mark’s apartment is attached to my parents’ house and both were just completely gone, just totally gone. That was our childhood home,” Devine tells PEOPLE. Her brother, meanwhile, was still reeling from the loss of his collection.

“DVDs for Mark are everything,” Devine says. “He watches them, talks about them, collects them and organizes them, they’re his hobby.”

On Monday, in an effort to help ease some of Orsillo’s pain, Devine posted to Facebook asking people to donate any unwanted DVDs to her brother. “He is an OCD movie collector and lost hundreds of movies,” she wrote in a Facebook post. “This is very hard for him.”

It didn’t take long for the movies to come rollin’ in.

Within hours, strangers from around the country left comments announcing the DVDs they were sending Orsillo’s way. They included movies and TV shows like Spider-Man, Kindergarten Cop, Harry Potter, and Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers. “The response has been incredibly surprising,” Devine says.

As of Friday, Devine says her brother’s new collection has now reached close to 400 DVDs, and she thinks it may top a thousand in the coming weeks.

The family is doing well after the fire, Devine says, and Steve Orsillo plans to rebuild the house on the property. A donation page has been set up the assist the family and has already surpassed $ 12,000. And while it is wonderful her brother is getting attention, Devine wants to remind others that there were many families who lost their homes during the fire, and they need help, too. Today, the fire is 95-percent contained.

On Friday, Devine posted a heartwarming video of Orsillo seeing his new collection for the first time:

Devine, who played basketball at Arizona State, says her brother was always her biggest fan when she was on the court. “It’s really cool that I can return the favor now, because I am his biggest fan.”

“Mark is just the most loving person you’ll ever meet,” Devine continues. “He doesn’t have any bad days, he forgives everyone very easily and never gets offended. It’s almost like the love is being returned to him a million times over, and he deserves it more than anybody.”

“Yes I do!” Mark excitedly yells in the background.

Devine laughs. “Yes, you do,” she says.

What We Know About the Bumblebee Movie So Far

Now that director Michael Bay has delivered what is supposedly his final Transformers film with The Last Knight, the franchise is ready to expand in new directions in the years to come. The first post-Bay Transformers movie will be Bumblebee, a prequel following the solo adventures of Optimus Prime’s faithful lieutenant.

With the Bumblebee movie reportedly hitting theaters next summer, here’s everything we know so far about this Transformers spinoff, including the director, possible cast and how the film will stand apart from the Transformers movies we’ve seen before.

We’ll see if Bumblebee’s production is impacted by the box office performance of Transformers: the Last Knight. The fifth Michael Bay-directed Transformers film debuted to a franchise-low $ 45.3 million domestically, though it raked in quite a bit more overseas.

9 Other Superheroines Who Deserve Their Own Movie Adaptations

This week, director Patty Jenkins made history. She became the first woman director to head up a summer blockbuster ― a big-budget sector of the film industry typically reserved for action movies directed by men.

That Hollywood has been notoriously unkind to women directors makes the feat more remarkable still. Jenkins ― whose biggest flick prior to “Wonder Woman” was made with less than a tenth of the budget ― is only the fourth woman director to head up a project in the $ 100 million plus range.

What’s more: critics say the film’s a hit.

In an interview with Hollywood Reporter, Jenkins was modest about her early success. “I can’t take on the history of 50 percent of the population just because I’m a woman,” she said. And we agree. There’s no dearth of talented women directors who haven’t been given a chance on big-budget projects; hopefully, Jenkins’ efforts will open doors for them, too.

We’ve got a few in mind. Between Marvel’s “She-Hulk” and DC Comics’ brainy Natasha Irons, there are dozens of superheroine stories waiting to be adapted into summertime hits. Below, we’ve paired our favorite women directors with the winningest heroes we love.

“She-Hulk,” directed by Karyn Kusama

In recent Marvel installments of her story, “She-Hulk” has become much more than an object of desire. Mariko Tamaki — author of “This One Summer” — gives Jennifer Walters her own story, in which she’s coping with PTSD. And Karyn Kusama — director of “Girlfight” and “Jennifer’s Body” — has proven that she’s able to take on action-centered stories with dark psychological underpinnings.

“Scarlet Witch,” directed by Reed Morano

Elisabeth Olsen is currently playing the Scarlet Witch, aka Wanda Maximoff, in the “Avengers” movies, beginning with “Age of Ultron.” Maximoff is (maybe) the daughter of Magneto, the twin sister of Quicksilver, and her husband is Vision, so a film centered specifically on Scarlet Witch ― whose powers include being able to alter reality in various ways ― would be a true comic book family drama. We’d like to see Reed Morano, the director of the first three episodes of Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale” as well as films like “Skeleton Twins,” give the adaptation a bleak, intimate edge.

“Raven,” directed by Amber Tamblyn

Raven is a half-human, half-demon superhero who was rejected by the Justice League due to her dangerous ancestry. She winds up forming her own group of rowdy do-gooder teens ― a story that seems suited to Amber Tamblyn’s penchant for dark and feeling character studies.

“Faith,” directed by Amma Asante

Faith, with her psychokinetic and telepathic powers, has earned praise as a body-positive superheroine who, according to writer Amy Diegelman, is “fat […] and not hiding.” In her solo comic, Faith (aka Zephyr) has a boring job at a BuzzFeed-like media company, is dealing with a breakup and is living in a new city ― the perfectly relatable millennial scenario. Amma Asante, who directed 2017’s “Beauty and the Beast” remake “Belle,” could bring out the best of this teen-friendly story.

“Natasha Irons,” directed by Ava DuVernay

Geeks everywhere already know that DuVernay is behind the promising new adaptation of “A Wrinkle in Time,” so she’s already established herself as a woman director who’s interested in fantastical stories. DuVernay could work her magic on any of the Marvel of DC characters, really, but a cinematic retelling of Natasha Irons’ story would be worthy of her talents. Irons — like Tony Stark and her uncle, Steel — begins her world-saving career as an engineer donning Steel’s powerful suit.

“Poison Ivy,” directed by Dee Rees

Maybe you don’t want a “Poison Ivy” remake, but we do. And who better to make it happen than Dee Rees? She’s known for directing the HBO film “Bessie,” the docuseries “When We Rise” and an episode of “Empire,” but is tied to the “Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams” Amazon project, giving her some sci-fi experience. In the comic books, Poison Ivy ― or Pamela Lillian Isley ― is a botanist-turned-eco-terrorist (and sometimes Batman love interest), which seems like a complex villain plot built for our post-Paris Accord era.

“Thor Girl,” directed by Mimi Leder

Barring her uncreative name, Thor Girl (née Tarene) is a full-fledged superhero deserving of her own flick. After fighting supervillain Loki alongside Thor, she sought refuge on earth under the alias Tara Olson. Mimi Leder, the director of “Deep Impact” and executive producer on “The Leftovers,” would be a suitable match for Tarene.

“Buffy Summers,” directed by Andrea Arnold

“Buffy” would make for another contentious remake, but one that, under the helm of “American Honey” director Andrea Arnold, could be incredible. We’d love to see a film adaptation focus more on the mundane struggles of a high schooler living in suburban California ― which also happens to a “Hellmouth,” opening up Buffy’s home to a demonic gateway.

“Echo,” directed by Heather Rae

Echo, aka Ronin, made her first appearance in “Daredevil” Vol. 2, Issue #9, as a Native American woman with gifted intellect and “photographic reflexes,” who also happens to be one of the first deaf comic book characters. Her biography could move in so many directions ― she’s been in love with Daredevil, friends with Wolverine and Dr. Strange, allied with the New Avengers. Heather Rae, who’s mostly directed documentaries (like the Sundance and Tribeca darling “Trudell,” which tells the story of historic Native American poet and activist John Trudell), has experience working on narrative films as a producer. We’d love to see what someone with her resume could do with a superhero flick.

People Are Not Happy About This Body-Shaming Snow White Movie

Stories about women in entertainment dominated the 2017 Cannes Film Festival news cycle, as Sofia Coppola became the second woman to win the award for best director, and jury member Jessica Chastain spoke out about the “disturbing” depictions of women in cinema.

Chastain’s choice of adjective could certainly apply to the marketing campaign for an upcoming animated film that many spotted at the festival.

Journalists at Cannes tweeted photos of a billboard for “Red Shoes and the 7 Dwarfs” ― a Snow White parody that will reportedly star Chloe Grace Moretz.

The ad shows the tall, thin heroine wearing red high-heeled shoes next to a shorter, heavier version of herself ― barefoot and holding the shoes.

“What if Snow White was no longer beautiful and the 7 Dwarfs not so short?” the tagline asks.

The suggestion that a shorter, rounder Snow White is “no longer beautiful” attracted the ire of many parents with young kids.

On Tuesday, model and mom of two Tess Holliday tweeted a photo of the billboard at Moretz. “How did this get approved by an entire marketing team?” she wrote. “Why is it okay to tell young kids being fat = ugly?”

Many people shared their outrage in HuffPost Parents’ “So You Want To Raise A Feminist” Facebook group. Several parents noted that they would not be showing the film to their children.

“Red Shoes and the 7 Dwarfs” is a product of South Korea’s Locus Creative Studios. The company’s website describes it as a family-friendly film and outlines the plot: “After seven handsome princes are magically transformed into seven ugly dwarfs, they set out on a quest to break the curse by getting a kiss from the most beautiful princess in all the land.” According to IMDB, the movie is “a parody with a twist.”

While Snow White is a German fairy tale famously published by the Brothers Grimm, the “Red Shoes” in the working title is likely a reference to Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale, “The Red Shoes” ― which tells the story of a girl with enchanted red shoes (though the magical shoes in that fairy tale have a slightly more sinister effect than simply making one’s appearance conform to societal standards of beauty).

The Lotus website suggests the movie has a slightly more empowering message ― apparently the princess character is on a journey to find her lost father and learns “not only to accept herself, but to celebrate who she is, inside and out. And to let the beauty within … shine brighter than anyone else in the land.”

Still, the decision to describe the “normal” Snow White as ugly in the marketing campaign is questionable at best. The “family-friendly” designation is also questionable, as early trailers for “Red Shoes and the 7 Dwarfs” don’t seem particularly appropriate for children. One trailer shows two male dwarf characters secretly watching the heroine undress, while another shows a dwarf looking lustfully at her sleeping figure and then proceeding to violently thrash her body around in an attempt to remove her shoes.

“Red Shoes and the 7 Dwarfs” was previously scheduled for a summer 2017 release. Earlier this month, The Hollywood Reporter announced that Moretz was set to add her voice to the movie and that South Korean sales company Finecut would be introducing the film to buyers at the Cannes Film Festival.

The current status of the film is not entirely clear, though the billboard at Cannes states “2018 Coming Soon.”

Locus Creative Studios did not immediately respond to HuffPost’s request for comment.

LGBTQ Community Faces An ‘Invisible’ Hollywood Summer Movie Season

”Moonlight,” and its story of a young black gay man struggling with his identity, may have won the coveted best picture Oscar this year, but it is still hard to find an LGBTQ character in a major Hollywood movie, according to a report on Thursday.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender advocacy group GLAAD said that only 23 of the 125 films released by the seven major Hollywood studios in 2016 includes LGBTQ characters. The “Q” stands for Questioning or Queer.

While U.S. television has made great strides in recent years with LGBT stories and characters, Hollywood movie studios are lagging way behind, the GLAAD report said.

Worse still, some are still featuring outdated humor, including the new “Baywatch” movie which has a scene where stars Zac Efron and Dwayne Johnson respond in horror to accidentally kissing one another, it noted.

“The time has come for the film industry to step up and show the full diversity of the world that movie audiences are living in today,” said GLAAD President Sarah Kate Ellis.

“Films like ‘Moonlight’ prove there is a huge opportunity to not only tell LGBTQ stories worthy of Oscar gold, but to open the hearts and minds of audiences here and around the world in places where these stories can be a lifeline to the people who need it most,” she added.

While GLAAD said that its findings were up one percentage point from 2015, when 22 films contained an LGBTQ character, 10 of the 2016 crop gave such characters less than one minute of screen time.

Hollywood studios also fall far behind other media in portraying transgender characters. GLAAD counted just one character (in “Zoolander 2”) in its 2016 report, and said that character existed solely as a punchline.

Despite some notable examples earlier this year, including a gay character in the new live action blockbuster “Beauty and the Beast,” GLAAD said “the forecast for the summer blockbuster season is a continuation of LGBTQ invisibility.”

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson Is Having Trouble Accepting That ‘Baywatch’ Is A Bad Movie

When one of the biggest laughs in your movie revolves around the supposed hilarity of Zac Efron fondling a dead man’s scrotum, it’s probably a good move to check your outrage over its critical reception.

If you’ve somehow been able to remain ignorant to its relentless marketing campaign (seriously, how?), “Baywatch” hits theaters Friday and critics are already savaging the movie with a 19 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes. Some have compared watching the reboot to sitting in a wet bathing suit for a prolonged period, while others have conceded it’s stupidly entertaining at best.

The movie’s star, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, however, is on a one man social media mission to convince the world that “Baywatch” isn’t as bad as everyone’s saying it is. Cue the actor launching into an almost Trumpian tweetstorm on Thursday about how out of touch the media is with what the the public wants.

He kicked it off by reminding us all of the “extremely high scores” from fans.

Then he posted a story about the critics score on Rotten Tomatoes rising from its 13 percent to a slightly less embarrassing 18 percent.

“Yay positive upticks,” he tweeted. “Fans LOVE the movie. Critics HATE it. What a glaring disconnect. People just want to laugh & have fun.”

Next he spent time praising some fans and critics who actually liked the movie with some choice retweets and knocks at those who laughed in the theater, but trash the film publicly.

And to finish off, Johnson took one more jab at the “Baywatch” naysayers, reminding everyone once again of just how differently the fans and the media feel about the movie.

“Oh boy, critics had their venom & knives ready,” he wrote. “Fans LOVE the movie. Huge positive scores. Big disconnect w/ critics & people.”

Considering the way things are headed, “Baywatch” will likely get a sequel and Johnson will make the White House home within the decade, so maybe we should submit and take a bite of what The Rock is cooking.

Pirates Reportedly Pirate Latest ‘Pirates’ Movie For Ransom

Disney CEO Bob Iger told company employees Monday that hackers claim to have channeled their inner Captain Jack Sparrow, filching one of the company’s films and threatening to release it, multiple trade publications have reported.

While Iger didn’t mention the name of the film, Deadline reported that the title is the painfully fitting Johnny Depp swashbuckling adventure “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,” set for release May 26.

The plunderers are reportedly demanding a large ransom to be paid in bitcoin, a digital currency, or else they’ll release the film in increments online. Disney, working with the FBI, refuses to pay up.

The Huffington Post has reached out to the company for comment but did not receive an immediate response.

The Disney hack does not appear to be related to the ransomware attack that crippled computers in 150 countries last week, demanding bitcoin ransom payments of $ 300 to $ 600. But it does resemble a recent incident involving Netflix, which led to a big “Orange Is the New Black” leak.

Late last month, hackers nabbed the upcoming season, set for release June 9, from the servers of a postproduction company used by Netflix and threatened to release it early unless an undisclosed ransom was paid. The streaming service refused, and episodes of “Orange” Season 5 are now available on torrenting sites. While that leak didn’t have much of an impact, making a blockbuster like “Pirates” freely available online could have an adverse effect on ticket sales.

Whether the two incidents were caused by the same hackers, however, is unknown.

‘Psych’ TV Movie To Air On USA Network In December

Time to get psyched, “Psych” fans.

USA Network announced Monday that a movie version of its comedy mystery series “Psych” will premiere on the cable network in December.

Fake-psychic detective Shawn Spencer (James Roday) and pal Burton “Gus” Guster (Dulé Hill) are on the case for the first time since the series’ eighth and final season in 2014.

The plot for “Psych: The Movie” revolves around the show’s characters coming together during the holidays “after a mystery assailant targets one of their own,” the network wrote. It is due to begin production May 24, Variety reported.

“‘Psych’ is a beloved part of our USA family, and what better time to reunite with family than the holidays?” said Chris McCumber, the president of entertainment networks for NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment, in a release. The TV movie “successfully rekindles one of the greatest bromances in television history,” he added.

Other regular characters that will appear in the upcoming production are Lassiter (Timothy Omundson), Juliet (Maggie Lawson), Henry (Corbin Bernsen), and Chief Vick (Kirsten Nelson).

See The Intense Trailer For Kathryn Bigelow’s Detroit Riot Movie

”Zero Dark Thirty” director Kathryn Bigelow’s first movie after Jessica Chastain was robbed of her Oscar for that project depicts the deadly five-day 1967 Detroit riot, which started after police raided an unlicensed bar.

Titled “Detroit,” the movie’s trailer debuted Wednesday. It is a who’s who of bright young talent: John Boyega, Jason Mitchell, John Krasinski, Anthony Mackie, Jack Reynor, Will Poulter, Hannah Murray and Jacob Latimore all appear.

The first film distributed by Megan Ellison’s Annapurna Pictures, “Detroit” is opting for a surprising release strategy. Given its star director and topical subject, the movie has Oscar potential, yet the studio has slated it for an Aug. 4 debut, ahead of the typical awards season window. With positive reviews and a decent box office result, it could carry over. After all, Bigelow’s previous collaborations with screenwriter Mark Boal, who penned “Detroit,” “Zero Dark Thirty” and “The Hurt Locker,” have proven fruitful with the Academy.

‘Juno’ Writer Says It’s Definitely Not An ‘Anti-Choice Movie’

In the 2007 film “Juno,” it isn’t long after Ellen Page’s character discovers the one doodle that can’t be undid ― her surprise pregnancy ― that she decides to put her baby up for adoption.

But the idea that “Juno” might be perceived as an anti-choice film has been “haunting” screenwriter Diablo Cody “for years,” Vanity Fair reported. Cody appeared at a Planned Parenthood benefit Sunday alongside cast members Page and Jennifer Garner, who participated in a live, all-female “Juno” script reading.

Abortion may have been a logical step for the teenage high school student, as it is for many facing unplanned pregnancies. Yet, although Juno walks into an abortion clinic, having talked over the option with her boyfriend Paulie (Michael Cera), she appears to be swayed by an anti-abortion classmate protesting outside, after learning her fetus might have already developed fingernails. Juno leaves the clinic.

Historically, abortion has been a rare plot point in Hollywood films. When it does appear in a storyline, the decision might provide a moment of melodrama as the pregnant character wrestles with “wrong” and “right,” which is implied to be carrying the baby to term no matter the circumstances of the mother.

But Cody, who banged out the “Juno” script from a Minnesota Target Starbucks in about one month, stressed that the character’s decision wasn’t the result of any “moral conundrum.”

Rather, the writer, with all her own “personal peccadillos,” put herself in Juno’s shoes and pictured how she might react, explaining, “I’m afraid to give blood, so I could see myself freaking out in the waiting room of an abortion clinic,” Vanity Fair reported.

“In a way, I feel like I had a responsibility to maybe be more explicitly pro-choice, and I wasn’t,” Cody told the outlet, adding that although she “never attempted to hide” her views on abortion, “I think I took the right to choose for granted at the time.”

Planned Parenthood provides information about and referrals to adoption agencies in addition to its abortion services. Since President Donald Trump’s election, the women’s health organization been under threat of defunding by his administration, inspiring a surge in donations. While Vice President Mike Pence stated that he would like to send a woman’s right to abortion “to the ash heap of history, where it belongs,” Trump also voiced anti-choice views on the campaign trail. His Supreme Court nominee, Neil Gorsuch, a 49-year-old conservative judge who was confirmed Friday, may help decide the future of abortion rights in the U.S.

For Cody, who went on to write the female-fronted film “Young Adult” and series “United States of Tara,” the Planned Parenthood benefit helped assuage her fears.

“It was very healing for me tonight to have a representative from Planned Parenthood stand up there and say that she supported the narrative,” she said

Mariah Carey’s Song ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ To Become Movie

Mariah Carey’s iconic holiday romp of a song “All I Want For Christmas Is You” is about to become an animated film.

Carey made the announcement for the film, which will be released during the 2017 holiday season, on Twitter:

“There are traditions we can’t live without. The tree, the stockings, the presents, and Mariah Carey,” the attached trailer teases.

We couldn’t agree more, Mariah.

Let’s face it, no matter what time of year that you’re listening to it, “All I Want For Christmas Is You” is unequivocally the best song Carey has ever produced. Yes, “Heartbreaker” was of course THE jam that caused women everywhere to want to dance around movie theaters in crop tops in 1999, but it pales in comparison to the glory of “All I Want For Christmas Is You.”

“All I Want For Christmas Is You” is romance, tiny Santa-themed dresses, happiness, “Love Actually.” It’s only natural that it be made into a film.

We already know a cartoon Mariah is purely delightful (courtesy of that impossibly perfect “Heartbreaker” video) so we’re waiting with bated breath for this film’s release.

These Guys Spent Years Editing All Of ‘Breaking Bad’ Into A 2-Hour Movie

For everyone out there who’s thinking of watching (or rewatching) the entirety of “Breaking Bad” but doesn’t want to commit to five whole seasons, you’re in luck.

Filmmakers Lucas Stoll and Gaylor Morestin have worked tirelessly to edit all 62 episodes of the AMC show into a single, two-hour movie.

Stoll and Morestin called their feat “a study project that became an all-consuming passion.”

“It’s not a fan-film, hitting the highlights of show in a home-made homage,” they wrote on Vimeo, “but rather a re-imagining of the underlying concept itself, lending itself to full feature-length treatment. An alternative ‘Breaking Bad,’ to be viewed with fresh eyes.”

The story of Walter White’s rise and fall ― from cancer-stricken high school teacher to drug kingpin ― is basically all there, but of course, two hours couldn’t possibly capture every nuance and detail included in the full series.

7 Nightwing Comics That Should Inspire the New Movie

Things are sure looking up for Dick Grayson these days. Not only is he a big player in The LEGO Batman Movie, but now we’ve learned that director Chris McKay is apparently in talks to direct WB’s live-action Nightwing movie.

We doubt WB will have much trouble topping Dick’s last live-action appearance in 1997’s Batman & Robin. Even so, we hope the new movie will draw plenty of inspiration from Dick Grayson’s comic book adventures. There are a lot of classic stories to choose from, but here are the ones we think are the most important.

James Gunn Was Denied an R-Rated Hitman Movie

Before he became known as the man behind Guardians of the Galaxy, filmmaker James Gunn pitched an R-rated Hitman movie that went nowhere.

Over on Twitter, Gunn answered a question about whether there’s any particular video game that could successfully adapt to the silver screen. That’s when he opened up about his failed Hitman proposal.

Martin Scorsese’s Next Movie Is Heading To Netflix

Netflix has acquired its most prestigious title yet: a Martin Scorsese movie.

“The Irishman,” a $ 100 million gangster flick starring Robert De Niro, was initially set up at Paramount, which released Scorsese’s previous movie, “Silence.” But with 12-year Paramount chief Brad Grey leaving the studio after a financially spotty 2016, Scorsese and his team opted to package the movie elsewhere, according to IndieWire.

“Scorsese’s movie is a risky deal, and Paramount is not in the position to take risks,” a source reportedly told IndieWire. “This way, he can make the project he wants.”

In other words, Scorsese’s team wants to work somewhere that executives won’t panic about box-office numbers. That’s presumably a response to “Silence,” which cost $ 46 million but earned only $ 7.1 million domestically after proving difficult to market to mainstream moviegoers.

First announced in 2008, “The Irishman” is an adaptation of the Charles Brandt book I Heard You Paint Houses, which follows mob hitman Frank Sheeren, who confessed to killing labor-union leader and organized-crime honcho Jimmy Hoffa. Steve Zaillian (”Schindler’s List,” “Gangs of New York”) wrote the script.

“The Irishman” will mark Scorsese’s ninth movie with De Niro. It also stars Al Pacino and Joe Pesci, who have worked with Scorsese before, too.

Even if the financials behind this decision seem logical, it’s a surprise move for a director known as a disciple of traditional cinema. Scorsese has long preached about his preference for shooting on film instead of digitally, the medium most directors opt for nowadays. Still, he hasn’t shied away from television, co-creating “Vinyl” and directing the “Boardwalk Empire” pilot for HBO.

‘‘Cinema is gone,’’ Scorsese told the Associated Press in December. ‘‘The cinema I grew up with and that I’m making, it’s gone. The theater will always be there for that communal experience, there’s no doubt. But what kind of experience is it going to be? Is it always going to be a theme-park movie? I sound like an old man, which I am. The big screen for us in the ’50s, you go from Westerns to ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ to the special experience of ‘2001’ in 1968. The experience of seeing ‘Vertigo’ and ‘The Searchers’ in VistaVision.’’

Regardless, this is a boon for Netflix, which jump-started its original features with the 2015 Oscar hopeful “Beasts of No Nation.” At the Sundance Film Festival last month, the streaming service acquired more titles than any traditional studio, even snagging the festival’s strongest Oscar contender, the World War II race drama “Mudbound,” for a pricey $ 12.5 million

If You Like ‘Heathers,’ You’ll Love This Sundance Movie

The buzz that travels from the Sundance Film Festival bubble to the real world every January typically revolves around a small crop of Oscar hopefuls. But for every “Boyhood,” there’s an “Obvious Child” ― a discovery with passionate fans who want to shout its name from the cinematic rooftops. For me, this year’s was “Thoroughbred.”

Sleek and delicious, “Thoroughbred” is a 90-minute romp through the spoils of suburbia, where decadent facades conceal murderous impulses. It blends the popular-girl pastiche of “Heathers” with the sensual psychodrama of Ingmar Bergman’s “Persona.”

Writer and director Cory Finley cast two self-proclaimed “Sundance kids” in his debut feature. Olivia Cooke, the dying girl in “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl,” plays Amanda, a sociopathic Connecticut teenager who’s become a social leper after slaying her family’s horse. Sharp and resourceful, Amanda rehearses emotions but feels nothing. Anya Taylor-Joy, the witch in “The Witch,” plays Lily, an estranged junior-high friend who reconnects with Amanda for study sessions. In truth, Amanda’s mother has paid Lily to spend time with her daughter as a sort of arranged playdate. Lily is the picture-perfect classmate, preppy and beautiful and poised ― or so it seems. One problem: It’s driving Lily mad to live with her vicious stepfather (Paul Sparks), who wants to ship her off to a boarding school for troublemakers.

“Thoroughbred” was first a play, which Finley wrote as a “conversation about the relationship between emotions and morality.” In keeping, Amanda and Lily’s tainted virtues weigh heavily on the movie. Both are seeking relief from their prosaic realities. As often seen in teenagers, the more time they spend together, the more Amanda and Lily’s personalities merge. And then, like a spark, they hatch a plan to murder Lily’s stepfather with the help of a local drug dealer (a manic Anton Yelchin, in his final screen role).

“I thought it was interesting to set this story in a world that might be very morally insulating, but to have characters who are of an age where they’re just starting to build their own value systems,” Finley said.

As “Thoroughbred” continues, Amanda shows possible glimmers of normalcy, while Lily’s temperament grows more cutthroat. Early in the film, Finley employs a standard shot/reverse-shot dialogue technique to place the girls on opposite sides of every conversation. By the end, they occupy the frame together, opposing the forces that cross their paths. All the while, Erik Friedlander’s tribal score ― reminiscent of “The Witch” ― crescendos toward a bloody climax.

“As the movie goes on, we start to resemble each other,” Taylor-Joy said. “It’s like we move in sync. My voice gets deeper, and I start speaking in a similar way that Amanda does. … Lily’s on this level of tension, but underneath this perfectly composed and preppy little girl, I just thought, ‘It must be bloody exhausting to keep that up all the time, and there must be something going on underneath all of that that she’s repressed.’ She’s really lonely and she’s just in a toxic situation that I think is starting to seep into her own skin.”

For the work of a first-time director, “Thoroughbred” is remarkably assured, mastering its satirical tone and portraying suburbia as a demented WASP playground. Finley cited “Mulholland Drive,” the David Lynch thriller with similar themes, as his inspiration for becoming a filmmaker. Elements of “Mulholland” are evident in “Thoroughbred,” as are hallmarks of “The Shining,” chiefly in eerie long takes that snake through Lily’s palatial home. The ending of Finley’s movie is less enigmatic than those two, but the director was deliberate in leaving Amanda and Lily’s psychology open to interpretation.

Cooke was drawn to the role because it’s the antithesis of “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl” and the “Psycho” prequel series “Bates Motel,” in which she portrays hyper-emotional teens. As for Taylor-Joy, Lily complements her work in “The Witch” and M. Night Shyamalan’s “Split,” in which she personifies young women who refuse to become victims of their gloomy circumstances. Cooke and Taylor-Joy are aces in this movie, their characters peeling away at layers, as if in a constant tug-of-war with themselves, each other and the viewer.

“I would hesitate to boil any part of their motivations down to any single factor,” Finley said. “But I think who these characters are, as is true with all of us, is a mix of where they grew up, the people they grew up around, something ineffable about the way they were born, just how they were put on Earth, and then their influence on one another. I think that’s the key piece in that motivational puzzle. But I also hope that it’s a cause for discussion among audiences and people come away with their own takes.”

Focus Features bought “Thoroughbred” at Sundance for a reported $ 5 million.

Nicolas Cage Reached Peak Nicolas Cage By Crashing His Own Movie Marathon

Your favorite Nicolas Cage movie says a lot about you. If you prefer “Con Air,” you may be a mullet apologist. If you choose “The Wicker Man,” you may want to reconsider.

Every year the Alamo Drafthouse theater honors the Oscar-winning actor by screening a curated selection of five movies starring Cage, who has developed a cult following over the years. Film programmer Greg MacLennan has tried to arrange for the actor to bless Caged (stylized C4GED) with his presence for the past three years with little luck.

The fourth iteration of Caged was held over the weekend in Austin, Texas, and this time Cage himself crashed the movie marathon by surprising his fans onstage. He even crafted the lineup himself, choosing to screen “Bangkok Dangerous,” “Joe,” “Bringing Out the Dead,” “Army of One” and “Lord of War” back-to-back.

“This is and will always be the greatest day of my life,” MacLennan said in a statement, according to Entertainment Weekly. “I apologize to my unborn future child.”

And yet, things got even more strange when Cage decided to recite Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart” for the audience because, at that point, why the hell not?

One Of Iran’s Biggest Movie Stars Is Boycotting The Oscars Over Trump’s Visa Ban

Iranian actress Taraneh Alidoosti, star of the Oscar-nominated film “The Salesman,” announced Thursday morning that she had decided to boycott the 89th Academy Awards next month due to President Trump’s “racist” ban on Iranian visas

“Trump’s visa ban for Iranians and others is a racist move and unacceptable,” she wrote on multiple social media channels. “Whether this will include a cultural event or not, I won’t attend the #AcademyAwards 2017 in protest.”

Alidoosti’s announcement comes one day after reports surfaced that the Trump administration planned to stop all visa applications for a month from seven countries in Africa and the Middle East, one of which is Iran. The news caused a near-immediate uproar among many in the Iranian-American community.

Donald Trump is making good on the most shameful and discriminatory promises he made on the campaign trail,” the National Iranian American Council, a Washington-based non-profit, said in a statement on Wednesday. “He called for a Muslim ban and is now taking the first steps to implement one. This will not stand. The American people are better than this.”

Sometimes referred to as the “Natalie Portman of Iran,” Alidoosti, 33, is widely considered one of the best actresses in the country. Her film “The Salesman,” which was directed by Oscar-winning director Asghar Farhadi, follows the deteriorating relationship of a couple as they rehearse Arthur Miller’s “Death of a Salesman.” It took home two awards at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival last May before it was nominated this week for Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars.

Alidoosti faced a small controversy shortly after the Cannes Film Festival when she revealed a small tattoo on her arm that was some combination of the female Venus symbol and a raised fist. The actress later confirmed that the tattoo was a “woman power” symbol and that she considered herself a feminist.

Roger Ebert’s “I Hated Hated Hated This Movie,” which gathered some of his most scathing reviews, was a best-seller. This new collection continues the tradition, reviewing not only movies that were at the bottom of the barrel, but also movies that he found underneath the barrel. From Roger’s review of “Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo” (0 stars): “The movie created a spot of controversy in February 2005. According to a story by Larry Carroll of MTV News, Rob Schneider took offense when Patrick Goldstein of the “Los Angeles Times” listed this year’s Best Picture nominees and wrote that they were ‘ignored, unloved, and turned down flat by most of the same studios that. bankroll hundreds of sequels, including a follow-up to “Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo,” a film that was sadly overlooked at Oscar time because apparently nobody had the foresight to invent a category for Best Running Penis Joke Delivered by a Third-Rate Comic.’ Schneider retaliated by attacking Goldstein in full-page ads in “Daily Variety” and the “Hollywood Reporter.” In an open letter to Goldstein, Schneider wrote: ‘Well, Mr. Goldstein, I decided to do some research to find out what awards you have won. I went online and found that you have won nothing. Absolutely nothing. No journalistic awards of any kind. . Maybe you didn’t win a Pulitzer Prize because they haven’t invented a category for Best Third-Rate, Unfunny Pompous Reporter Who’s Never Been Acknowledged by His Peers. .’ Schneider was nominated for a 2000 Razzie Award for Worst Supporting Actor, but lost to Jar-Jar Binks. But Schneider is correct, and Patrick Goldstein has not yet won a Pulitzer Prize. Therefore, Goldstein is not qualified to complain that Columbia financed “Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo” while passing on the opportunity to participate in “Million Dollar Baby, Ray, The Aviator, Sideways,” and “Finding Neverland.” As chance would have it, I have won the Pulitzer Prize, and so I am qualified. Curb Your Ire, Bros: Anna Kendrick Is In Talks To Play Santa In A Disney Movie

Anna Kendrick is in talks to play Santa Claus in a new Disney movie, Variety reported Wednesday.

We know some people are incredibly protective of the traditional image of Santa Claus, so the backlash about this news seems inevitable. Typically protesters (aka Megyn Kelly) argue that Santa ― a fictional character with historical ties to a Turkish monk ― must be white. Now they get to argue over whether Father Christmas must, in fact, be a father. (Please don’t.)

The project’s working title is “Nicole.” Kendrick plays Santa’s daughter, who is left to take over the family business when Saint Nick retires and her brother chickens out before his first Christmas in charge. “Miss Congeniality” and “Two Weeks Notice” scribe Marc Lawrence has written the script and will direct the film.

Gender-swapping on the big screen is nothing new, of course. Just last year, misogynistic bros claimed their childhoods were ruined by Paul Feig’s female-centric “Ghostbusters” reboot. Marvel opted to cast Tilda Swinton as The Ancient One in “Doctor Strange.” And a reboot of “Ocean’s 11” booked an all-star cast including Cate Blanchett, Rihanna, Sandra Bullock and Mindy Kaling.

Most other details about “Nicole” are under wraps. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it’s not a musical. The Huffington Post reached out to Kendrick’s rep to confirm her involvement but did not immediately hear back.

Someone Literally Turned 2016 Into A Horror Movie

Everyone’s been saying it: 2016 was one traumatic year.

It’s the year we lost David Bowie, Harper Lee, Prince, and Princess Leia and her mother. It’s the year the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union. It’s the year Donald Trump was voted president of the United States. It’s the year Harambe was shot.

These past 12 months have played out like a surreal horror film ― so Friend Dog Studios turned the year into one, in the form of a fake movie trailer.

The comedy studio premiered the trailer Wednesday for “2016: The Movie,” and it hits way too close to home.

The trailer’s story touches all the shitty things that happened this year, including notable deaths, exploding phones and Trump’s “locker room talk” defense.

If there’s anything this movie trailer does, it confirms that we’re not just going crazy: This year felt bad universally.

And whatever you do, don’t trust the boyfriend in the video above when he says, “It’s OK. It’s not like it could get any worse.”

NYC Offers a Multitude of Movie Theaters for Your Viewing Pleasure

2016-12-22-1482437103-581268-MovieTheaterinside.jpg

By Annika Andersson, ZEALnyc Contributing Writer, December 30, 2016

Winter is here and one of best ways to combat the cold is to go inside–to the movies! Hollywood seems to schedule even more of their blockbuster releases around the holidays, case in point–Rogue One: A Star Wars Story took over complete multiplex theaters on its opening weekend! And here in New York, we are privileged to have access to a fairly steady stream of great independent film options from all over the world, but invariably the question arises “where should we go to see this movie?”

New York City is home to an astounding variety of movie theatres, offering everything from traditional neighborhood cinemas to large multiplex chains–including one of the largest IMAX screens in the world! Here are five amazing theaters offering refuge from the chilly winter winds; so while you sit inside far from the cold, you’ll have some lovely amenities to enjoy as well.

2016-12-22-1482438377-2817849-AMC.jpg

AMC Loews Lincoln Square 13

AMC began as a family business 90 years ago, and has grown to become one of the largest movie chains in the U.S., welcoming approximately 200 million guests annually in 300 movie theatres. One of these multiplex theaters is located on the Upper West Side, just a block and a half away from Central Park. This complex is the home of one of the largest IMAX theaters in the country, with a staggering 600 seats. AMC generally shows big commercial productions and blockbusters, and is equipped with incredible audio, video, and 3D that gives justice to any special effects. All AMC movie theaters offer reduced prices to screenings starting before noon, which may be worth noting for the budget traveller. And it’s not a bad way to start your day, as there are plenty of comfy brunch restaurants in the area to head to afterwards, where you can discuss the film. The neighborhood has also seen a recent increase in shopping venues, such as outlet store Century21 around the corner. But if you’d like to splurge on your movie experience, AMC also offers the pricier alternative AMC Prime, which combines the high quality picture and sound technology of Dolby Cinema with enormous, numbered reclining seats. But beware — if you’ve ever leaned back in one of those for a film screening, it’s hard to ever be content with regular seats again!

AMC Loews Lincoln Square 13 is located at 1998 Broadway between 67th and 68th Street on the Upper West Side.

Film Society of Lincoln Center

If you are more interested in Indie films, head down a couple of blocks to Lincoln Center’s own movie theaters. Their beautiful paneling and airy design definitely makes them among the chicest and most upscale in New York, offering a wide range of films that will attract the true cinephile. What differentiates Lincoln Center’s programming from others showing independent film, is the mix of film series like “Open Roads: New Italian Cinema” and “Rendez-Vouz with French Cinema.” The main attraction is of course the prestigious New York Film Festival in October, which is well worth a visit in itself. The true lover of culture doesn’t even need to travel further than a couple of doors, as the Metropolitan Opera, New York Philharmonic and New York City Ballet is located in the same complex. Central Park is only a couple blocks away, in case you need to stretch your legs after your movie or performance, or if you haven’t had enough, stroll down a 20 minute walk on Broadway to catch a musical or a play. And best yet–there’s a full-service cafe that operates at the main location–Indie Food and Wine–so you have lots more options for snacking besides popcorn. Click here for the menu.

Film Society of Lincoln Center encompasses the Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center (a multi-screen complex) at 144 West 65th Street, as well as the Walter Reade Theater across the street at 165 West 65th Street on the Upper West Side.

2016-12-22-1482438739-7277932-angelica.png

Angelika Film Center

Further downtown where Broadway crosses Houston Street (and a couple of blocks west), you’ll find the iconic Angelika Film Center & Cafe. Houston Street is the formal divide of NOHO from SOHO (North of Houston vs. South of Houston), which coincidentally offers two of New York’s best and hippest downtown shopping areas. Angelika belongs to a movie chain focusing on independent film, and the New York location opened in 1989.

The corner entrance is located at the Renaissance-inspired Cable Building, which was built in 1892-94 as the headquarters for one of the city’s tram companies. It was hailed by contemporaries for its magnificent architecture. The films are shown in the basement, which once served as the power plant for the trams. Sometimes you can hear (and feel) the subway trains during screenings, but if you are not overly sensitive, the prime location and fine selection of films shown, are well worth the visit.

Angelika New York is located at 18 West Houston Street (at the intersection of Mercer Street).

2016-12-22-1482438931-7403164-sunshine_theater_james_karla_murray_new_york_nights_lpl_130205_blog.jpg

Landmark Sunshine Cinema

At the corner of Broadway and Houston, if you turn east on Houston Street you’ll discover Landmark Sunshine Cinema, located in a beautiful Lower East Side building from 1898. Previously, the location has shown films under the name of the Houston Hippodrome, served as a theater for Yiddish vaudeville, and functioned as a warehouse. In 2001 Sunshine Cinema took over the building and when it opened to the public in December of that year, it was equipped to offer five salons with DLP digital projection and Dolby Digital Surround EX sound.

Landmark Theatres is America’s largest movie theatre chain dedicated to feature and promote independent film. In addition to showing a great selection of films, the space also offers a Japanese rock garden and a stunning view of the city from the third floor’s spectacular glass window.

Landmark Sunshine Cinema is located at 143 East Houston Street between Forsyth and Eldridge Street on the Lower East Side. And be on the lookout for the opening of its newest location at 625 West 57th Street (at 12th Avenue).

2016-12-22-1482439026-5035957-IFC.jpg

IFC Center

Back on the west side, in the heart of New York’s picturesque West Village, you’ll find the IFC Center. This is another great choice for the lover of documentaries, world cinema and independent films. IFC is hosting North America’s largest documentary film festival DOC NYC in the fall, while showing a great program of independent film all year round, often followed by directors Q&A’s. IFC also offers a variety of themes and programs, such as cult movies Fridays and Saturdays at midnight, a monthly program featuring LGBTQ guest curators, special presentations of theatrical productions such as National Theatre Live, Royal Shakespeare Company, Branagh Theatre Live and much more. The venue opened in June 2005, following a renovation of the historic Waverly Theater. Be sure to use the bathrooms downstairs so you may add the experience of walking through a basement dungeon tunnel flooded in green light to your New York bucket list.

IFC Center is located at 323 6th Avenue (where 6th Avenue crosses 3rd Street).

Film Club at Crosby Street Hotel

And for one more “bonus” entry on our list (even though there aren’t any current listings for upcoming films, you should be aware of this really nice, high-end viewing option for down the road).

SOHO’s Crosby Street Hotel has a luxuriously designed screening room in the basement, and on Sunday evenings, the hotel runs a film club, which is open to both hotel guests and the public. The films shown are often critically acclaimed blockbusters, which usually includes many Oscar and Golden Globe-winning and -nominated films. The hotel offers packages with dinner or cocktails at the Crosby Bar, followed by a movie at eight o’clock. But you may need to book well in advance, as the movie theater holds only 99 seats, which sell out quickly. A three-course dinner and a movie package costs $ 55. A cocktail with bar snacks and film is $ 35.

Crosby Street Hotel is located at 79 Crosby St, New York, NY 10012 in Soho between Prince and Spring Street.

* * * * *

This is just a small, select grouping of all the movie theaters New York has to offer. To find a theater closest to you, visit Fandango and type in your ZIP code, select the film, and then the movie theater. We hope our list provides you with a balanced mix of movie theater options, as well as opportunities to enjoy some great New York architecture in the process. Happy Viewing!

Third Cloverfield Movie Gets New Release Date

The third installment in the “Cloverfield Universe” will arrive on October 27, 2017.

Michael Bay Has Zero Interest In Blowing Things Up For A Marvel Movie

You’d think Marvel and director Michael Bay would go hand in hand, right? Both have failed Ben Affleck miserably, been blamed for the downfall of cinema, and demanded an unnecessary amount of explosions to make their movies watchable. And yet, Bay has steered clear from the recent boom in superhero films.

During an interview with Collider on the set of “Transformers: The Last Knight” published Monday, the director explained that he has zero interest in directing a Marvel flick because nothing can compare to creating a world all your own.

“I really liked ‘Civil War.’ I like a lot of the Marvel movies,” Bay said. “When I saw ‘Iron Man,’ it broke a lot of new ground for me, and it was a great character. Funny, witty, I liked that about it.”

Still, he’d rather stick to directing Mark Wahlberg’s varied “OMG robots are real” expressions in the billion-dollar “Transformers” franchise, which spits out a new installment this summer, than anything Marvel.

“I wouldn’t want to, it’s not my thing,” he stated. “It’s just not my gig.”

According to Collider, Bay also expressed some concerns about the similarities in plots of recent superhero movies, noting that he does “wonder where [superhero movies] are going to go,” because “Batman v Superman” and “Captain America: Civil War” had “almost the same setup.”

“I don’t ever wanna take someone like a third of something or second of something. I gotta do my own thing … ‘cause the most fun is when a real director creates the world,” Bay said. “You know, you talk to Ridley Scott, one our favorite things to do is to create the world. Steven Spielberg, create the world. That is what it’s about.”

He added, “If I were to do something, I would have to redo it my way.”

On that note, here’s the new trailer for “Transformers: The Last Knight”:

5 Movie Character Costumes That Need to Be Retired Immediately

We all* love using October 31st as an excuse to play dress-up as our favorite film heroes and heroines, but there is a difference between classic characters (Ghostbusters, Holly Golightly, James Bond) and characters du jour. We are currently in The Era Of Frozen And Breaking Bad, but should Elsa and Walter White still be super popular five or ten years from now? Probably not.

The following five costumes are long past their cultural moments and yet remain stubbornly prevalent, making them less “throwback” and more “[yawn].” Please allow me to offer alternatives that, while perhaps unoriginal, aren’t ubiquitous.

1. The Corpse Bride from The Corpse Bride

Literally any character in literally any Tim Burton film makes a guaranteed great costume, so why do we always see a hundred blue-faced brides shivering in the late-October night? My theory is that, Lord knows why, many American women own wedding-like lacy white dresses we are looking for an excuse to destroy. If this is the case for you, I suggest Cady’s “ex-wife” costume from Mean Girls. It works on two levels: Your dumb friends will think you are an “ex-wife.” Your cool friends will know you are Cady as an “ex-wife.”

2. The Joker

This costume makes me uncomfortable. Why do so many people find it so fun to pretend to be a psychotic killer from a movie that came out years ago? Don’t say it has nothing to do with Heath Ledger’s death; humans are sickos. And don’t say you’re the Jared Leto or Jack Nicholson version; nobody believes you. This costume is either done well and is terrifying, or is done poorly and makes the wearer look like a child playing with mommy’s makeup. Just be Beetlejuice.

3. Margot Tenenbaum

We get it, you’re a special girl, but this is the Uggs-and-leggings of Halloween costumes. If you insist on looking insufferably vintage chic, throw on the last multi-colored nightmare you bought at Anthropologie (you know you have one) and be Amelie.

4. Jack Sparrow

The Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise ceased to be relevant ages ago. If you want to be a badass, be Han Solo. If you want to be a beloved Disney character, be Mr. Incredible. If you want to wear eyeliner, wear eyeliner. It’s your life.

5. Nina in Black Swan

So your fancy outfit was too short and sparkly to turn it into a Corpse Bride ensemble, eh? Fear not, there are two beautiful, hard-working real-life women you can dress up as in a tutu or leotard: Misty Copeland and Michelle Kwan! (Note: If you happen to be Caucasian and are thinking, wow, those women are so inspiring! I think I’ll change the pigment of my skin to look more like them, don’t. That’s racist. Just wear the outfit.)

6. Bonus! Marty McFly from Back To The Future

This costume has been steadily gaining popularity over the past few Halloweens, and it’s not hard to see why: dope ’80s reference, dope jacket-and-vest combo, and Michael J. Fox is a national treasure. And 2015, of course, is Back To The Future year. So, you know what? Be Marty. Everyone be Marty. Take your pictures. Get it out of your system. Because starting Halloween 2016, Marty McFly is on hiatus. If you’re not over your nostalgia by then, you’ll have to be Teen Wolf or Elliot from E.T. Make this the Halloween Of McFly. And then, stop.

*Unless you’re one of those people who doesn’t “do” Halloween, in which case, I pity you.

3 Reasons Tightening Movie Theater Security isn’t the Answer

2015-08-28-1440790376-6326644-movies.jpeg

Visiting an actual movie theater for the first time in years was a strange, if not relatively unpleasant experience. The snack bar girl itched red welts on her arms that made me wary of seat cushion bedbugs. Movie previews advertised a phone app alerting older people with sensitive bladders when a boring scene came on so they could go pee.

The fact that hatchet wielding, gun toting maniacs have chosen movie theaters as locations for bloodbaths in Aurora Colorado (12 killed/ 70 injured/ Batman/ 2012), Lafayette, LA ( 2 killed/ 9 wounded/ Trainwreck/ July 2015) and Nashville, Tenessee (1 hatchet scraping/Fury Road/August 2015) feels slightly absurd. Mainstream movie theater audience members in the majority of theaters across the country are often the elderly, children and other individuals with an occasional old school fetish for real movie theaters. Movie theaters are no longer locations that seem ingrained in the American psyche. Few people can imagine themselves being bludgeoned in a movie theater, because fewer people go.

Tightening Big Brother style security in these locations will ensure even fewer people go, and movie theaters will deteriorate more. It is an ineffective, knee jerk, band aid reaction to what is hopefully a passing copycat lunatic fad. However, theaters across the country are setting new security measures in stone.

Regal Cinemas recently instituted mandatory bag checks in its 156 theaters nationwide. Showcase Cinemas (owned by National Amusements), in Connecticut completely banned backpacks and packages. Off the charts security measures ranging from metal detectors to TSA scans in movie theaters are being proposed by everyone from legislators to CEO’s.

Tighter security measures may border on civil rights violations, paves the way for 1984 brand mechanisms to be put in place in public spaces and deteriorates our chances of retaining our humanity. Turning public places into fortresses ultimately increases tension and escalates, rather than deters, violence.

The appropriate response to surreal madness is not to match it with more surreal madness. Here are some reasons why….

Three Reasons Tightening Movie Theater Security isn’t the Answer

1) Bag Searches are a Killjoy:
There is pleasure left in movie theaters—particularly in art theaters in larger cities that have retained old school style and charm. It’s still possible to sit in a theater and fantasize about being magically transformed into the lusty heroine on the screen, to become transfixed by an elegant landscape, enamored with the amplified echo of ice cubes clinking in crystalline glasses of scotch.

Security rifling through your bags can put a serious damper in the dreamscape of movie theaters. (They also make it impossible to bring bootleg store bought jolly ranchers and sour patch kids through the door.)

More importantly, bag searches just set precedence for more interference. Although airports may be appropriate places for metal detectors, TSA scans and the occasional body cavity search–movie theaters are not.

2) These Responses are Profoundly Ineffective. No axe wielding, gun toting, pepper spray sporting disgruntled American wanna be cartoon villain or psychopath is going to be deterred by a bag search. James Holmes walked out a back door in Aurora to get his weapons and reentered the theater through the same door with them before opening fire. Lafayette’s John “Rusty” Russel Houser had a gun on his person but left and returned through a side door. Vincente Montano, admittedly, did bring his pepper spray and hatchet in two backpacks—but if back checks were instituted, it’s likely he would have found another way.

Doing bag checks is a silly gesture, at best. Movie theater security staff peeking into bags will do nothing to keep weapons out. It will only make patrons more anxious.

3) There are bigger fish to fry here. Ramping up security anywhere a mentally impaired, deranged, racist or psychotic person has gone on a rampage and killed people in the US in recent years would require psycho security in elementary schools, churches, synagogues, as well as movie theaters. Creating more barriers as a reaction to large scale violence is fruitless. Maniacs can slip through the cracks anywhere, and there are no barriers without cracks. Turning ourselves into a well walled country, gives us even less of a chance to address deeper problems and retain our dignity as people. We should not be looking at how to fortify ourselves against gun violence, or mentally ill people running amok, after the fact—but addressing the underlying causes of those issues, first, before the chaos occurs. The fact that we aren’t is sad.

Ex Machina Again?: Hour of the Wolf Movie Review of The Machine

2015-08-23-1440362178-3165223-The_Machine_410.jpgThe Machine, Dan? The Machine? Surely you must mean Ex Machina, the dark, sensual drama about a young programmer falling into the thrall of an eerily human-like android, the film that grabbed so much attention earlier this year. That’s the film you’re talking about, right?”

No, no I’m actually talking about The Machine, another film entirely. But in an curious way, I’m talking about Ex Machina as well, because it turns out there are some interesting parallels between the two films, in sufficient quantity that I think it’s well-worth discussion. Movie Review: The Man from U.N.C.L.E.: Broken tentpole

2015-08-12-1439376637-2049961-uncle3.jpg

Guy Ritchie’s The Man from U.N.C.L.E. is a day late and a dollar short — actually, make that several seasons late, for anyone who watches the outrageously funny animated series, Archer.

Watching Henry Cavill deadpan his way through this film as CIA agent Napoleon Solo (the name says it all, doesn’t it?), I kept waiting for him to drop one of those random one-liners that punctuate the Archer episodes like bubbles of laughing gas. Cavill looks the part and could easily play the human version of this cartoon character.

Unfortunately, Ritchie and his cowriter Lionel Wigram didn’t have a roomful of comedy writers to punch up their soft script. The result is a heavy-footed film that barely gets by on one actor’s charm, animated by some patently bogus-looking special effects.

For those of us ancient enough to have been impressionable TV viewers when The Man from U.N.C.L.E. aired on NBC beginning in 1964, the memories hold not the slightest whiff of a spoof. The show was TV’s answer to the growing popularity of the James Bond films and the belief that the audience was intrigued with intrigue and spies (indeed, Bond creator Ian Fleming was one of the show’s originators).

While there was humor in the give-and-take between Solo (Robert Vaughn), colleague Illya Kuryakin (David McCallum) and boss Alexander Waverly (Leo G. Carroll), this show was meant to be semi-serious and exciting, along the lines of the original Mission: Impossible (which went on air two years later). If you wanted parody, you tuned in to Get Smart (which debuted the season after The Man from U.N.C.L.E.).

Now all three of these series have graduated to the big screen — and you can tell from the final scenes of U.N.C.L.E. that it’s meant to be a tentpole franchise. It worked for Mission: Impossible,” though that series is showing its age 20 years and five films into the process.

Ritchie is a pioneering cinematic stylist whose early films broke ground by infusing the most eye-catching visual effects from TV commercials into the British gangster film. Unfortunately, he has never been particularly strong on story. Nor is he a comedy writer: He’s a director with a kinetic and playful visual style, who seems to completely lose the thread when he takes the reins of a big-budget studio franchise (i.e., the cynically cash-grabbing Sherlock Holmes films with Robert Downey Jr.).

So it is with The Man from U.N.C.L.E., which has a repetitive plot and tropes.

This review continues on my website.
