Gwyneth Paltrow Reflects on Relationship with ex Ben Affleck: ‘He Was Very Much a Lesson’

Gwyneth Paltrow is dishing on a former — and very famous — ex of hers.

The Oscar winner, who’s now engaged to Brad Falchuk, was asked about her relationship to ex Ben Affleck while speaking to Howard Stern on his SiriumXM radio show on Wednesday.

“How did you know not to marry him? You were never in love with him,” Stern asked of Affleck, who Paltrow dated on-and-off from 1997 to 2000.

“It’s interesting, I think there’s certain boyfriends where you are trying to work stuff out, right?” she replied. “Like, you’re trying to heal certain stuff from your childhood and he was very much a lesson in that way”

“I’m not sure exactly what I was trying to heal in that instance, but it was…he was, you know, it was specific,” the 45-year-old continued.

This doesn’t mark the first time the actress has opened up to Stern about the Justice League star. In 2015, she told the comedian on his podcast that Affleck “was not in a good place in his life to have a girlfriend” at the time.” She said her parents “were OK with the two of us not being together,” although they “appreciated how he’s super intelligent.”

During Wednesday’s chat, Paltrow also let it slip that she and Falchuk aren’t planning on having children together.

“This is his second marriage … Neither of us wants more kids,” the mother of two said.

“We’re on the same team,” Paltrow added.

Paltrow shares son Moses Bruce Anthony, 12, and daughter Apple Blythe Alison, 14, with her consciously uncoupled-from ex-husband Chris Martin. Falchuk shares son Brody and daughter Isabella with ex-wife Suzanne Bukinik, whom he was married to for 10 years before filing for divorce in March 2013.

Sam Smith Opens Up on Gender-Fluid Identity: ‘I Feel Just as Much a Woman as I Am a Man’

Sam Smith doesn’t need labels.

In a candid interview with The Sunday Times, the English singer opened up his gender identity, saying he doesn’t consider himself a cisgender man.

“I don’t know what the title would be, but I feel just as much woman as I am man,” he elaborated.

Smith explained that he likes dressing in drag, revealing that he hits up the Australian drag shop House of Priscilla whenever he’s in Sydney, Australia.

“Oh, my god, I just buy everything — heels, dresses,” he said. “We have a great time.”

And this habit is nothing new. The 25-year-old crooner said he used to head to school in women’s clothing as a teen.

“There was one moment in my life where I didn’t own a piece of male clothing, really,” he said. “I would wear full make-up every day in school, eyelashes, leggings with Dr. Martens and huge fur coats, for 2 ½ years.”

RELATED VIDEO: Sam Smith on His Dramatic Weight Loss: ‘I Went to Bed Dreaming of Tuna Melts’

Smith also opened up about coming out as gay, saying, “Looking back on it, it was the fear of saying the wrong thing and offending … And I was 19 when I started writing the first album. I’d just moved to London from a village — I was literally the only gay in the village. I didn’t know what I wanted to say.”

The singer also teased fans with a hint of what his new album Thrill of It All, dropping on Nov. 3, holds.

“I think they show my growth, my confidence. I feel like they show me,” he said. “They show the gay guy I’ve become.”

Earlier this month, Smith attended a performance of the Broadway hit Dear Evan Hansen — and rumored new boyfriend Brandon Flynn was also there.

His theater outing comes after he was pictured kissing and holding hands with the 13 Reasons Why star while out in Greenwich Village earlier in the day.

Prince Harry Says Young People Spend Too Much Time on Phones: Let’s ‘Process Our Thoughts’ Instead

Prince Harry says the mental health campaign that he started alongside Prince William and Princess Kate is beginning to “shift the dial” — and on Thursday, he also highlighted a current concern of modern life.

“I cannot tell you how pleased William, Catherine and I are that the dial seems to have shifted and that there is now greater understanding, compassion and kindness for anyone who opens up about their struggles,” he said in a speech at a mental health event in Leeds in northern England. “But let’s not kid ourselves that the job is done — there is much, much more that we can do at every level to make conversations about mental health as common place as those about physical health.”

Harry, William and Kate set up Heads Together to promote mental-health awareness and support in April 2016. On Thursday, Harry noted the extreme amount of time people spend on their phones.

“I read recently that young people check their phones at least 150 times per day – I’m sure we could all be more effective and efficient if we took a moment to process our thoughts rather than rushing from one thing to the next,” he said.

Also on Thursday the prince, 32, followed a stadium to watch kids play rugby league in a bid to help encourage more than 700,000 children from primary and secondary schools playing the game.

They are taking part in a festival of seven-a-side touch rugby league games, coached by current England players and local coaches from the Leeds Rhinos Foundation. It is Harry’s first engagement in his new role as Royal Patron of the Rugby Football League.

Harry’s two-day tour of Leeds will continue on Friday, when he is scheduled to visit a children’s hospital as well as the home of a seriously ill 5-year-old boy who is being supported by WellChild, another of Harry’s key charities.

This Is How Much Your Favorite HGTV Stars Are Reportedly Worth

Over the past few years, people have become more obsessed with HGTV and the network’s major stars.

E! News recently looked at the most popular stars on the channel and tried to figure out who was the most sought-out of the group. Their infographic broke down the celebrities’ popularity by their HGTV spinoffs, social media following, estimated net worth (using known salaries and sponsorships, as well as a variety of other incomes or financial involvements), number of years in the business, book deals and more.

In descending order, here are the shows and their stars who have made the most, in terms of reported net worth:

#5: “Flip or Flop”

Tarek and Christina El Moussa have earned an estimated $ 4 million.

Tied for #3: “Fixer Upper”

Chip and Joanna Gaines are worth an estimated $ 5 million, but that will probably increase exponentially with all the deals and real estate offerings they have in the works.

Tied for #3: “Rehab Addict”

Nicole Curtis is tied with the Gaines at a reported $ 5 million.

2. “Love It Or List It”

David Visentin and Hilary Farr have brought in an estimated $ 7 million.

Just strolling along in our #shades with @hilary_farr #loveitorlistit #raybans

A post shared by David Visentin (@davidvisentin1) on

1. “The Property Brothers”

Drew and Jonathan Scott are worth an estimated $ 510 million, according to E!.

As the infographic points out, “House Hunters” is one of the most popular TV shows on the channel with over 1,700 total episodes. But because it doesn’t have a star or two, it’s a bit hard to estimate the show’s worth to the network.

HuffPost reached out to HGTV for comment, but the network could not provide specific information about the stars’ net worth.

‘100 Years Of Black Fashion’ Is About So Much More Than Clothes

This is unlike the hundreds of other “100 years of…” videos you’ve seen before.

Buzzfeed Yellow released “100 Years Of Black American Fashion” on Monday, marking the close of Black History Month. The video features some of our most beloved and popular trends, showing how black fashion evolved since the 1920s with iconic styles inspired by jazz, Motown and hip-hop.

It also provides a look back through black history in this country using the lens of fashion.

Consider the 1940s, when black soldiers were “often given more labor-intensive service roles based on the belief that they were unfit to serve as officers,” the video says, or the late 1950s-60s, when civil rights activists were given more “credence” for dressing in their “Sunday best.”

Today, the Black Lives Matter movement is deeply steeped in fashion, including political statements printed on clothing andr hoodies worn in honor of Trayvon Martin, who was shot and killed five years ago this week.

The fashion is something to admire, but the history matters most.

Pooch Hall on Parenting a Daughter with Cerebral Palsy: ‘I Want Her to Have as Much Normalcy as Possible’

Pooch Hall is a self-proclaimed “family man” — and that commitment is lived out both on and off screen.

Hall’s new movie Media — which premieres on TV One on Saturday — explores the drama and secrets behind a powerful family dynasty. In the film, Hall, 40, plays the hot-headed but protective eldest brother of the powerful Jones family, who is battling the competitive challenges of keeping their status and position in the communications industry.

“My character has a little bit of Godfather dynamic, as far as making sure his family is good,” Hall, 40, tells PEOPLE about his role. “The Jones family is about unity, strength, power and understanding how to stay on top. I hope when people watch Media, they walk away with a new definition of what it’s like to be a not so perfect but proud African American.”

Hall says doubling as an actor and living life as a family man with four children — Djanai, 18, Djordan, 8, Djaeda, 10, and Djulian, 14 months — is never easy. “As far as me, being an actor and a family man in this world that we are working in … it’s never going to be easy,” he says.

But when it comes to the parallels between the fictional Jones family and the real-life Hall family, he quips, “Both families aren’t playing around.”

Hall’s eldest daughter, Djanai, has cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair. In support of their daughter and other special needs children, Hall and his wife, Linda, created the non-profit inClusion ClubHouse, where children with developmental disabilities can learn and play. Their ClubHouse will include five key spaces, including an arts and crafts “creation station” and a multi-sensory experience room.

“I want my daughter to have as much normalcy as possible. And other parents, who really wish they can have this for their daughter, or son, where they experience and exercise their normalcy in the world that we live in. … It’s real work,” he says about his family’s efforts to support the special needs community.

Hall also shares that he is excited for Djanai to be treated with equality at the ClubHouse. “I think I’m mostly excited about her being equal and her being like, You know what, I’m equal,” Hall explains. “My daughter, Djanai, is not looking at herself as I’m different. She will go, Okay, I’m part of this world and I am equal. She’s not looking at as far as I can’t walk or talk. My daughter is super fun, super dope.”

When the Ray Donovan actor isn’t filming, he says he spends as much time as possible with his family. And the ClubHouse, which is opening soon in Los Angeles’ San Fernando Valley, will be a new space for focusing on family fun.

He adds that his Media cast has been extremely supportive of his family’s endeavor: “It’s crazy how much support I get. … I’ve been blessed.”

On Sunday, March 5, Hall and his wife will host a Celebrity Karaoke Night in L.A. to benefit their organizations, with proceeds going towards helping them continue offering much-needed programs for children with special needs and towards a building fund to open inClusion ClubHouse.

Media premieres Feb. 25 (8 p.m. ET) on TV One.

5 Things That Will Make You Much Happier

2016-11-18-1479509543-1079096-5ThingsThatWillMakeYouMuchHappierHP

There’s enough advice on happiness floating around out there to make your head spin. Yet, this is understandable, as everyone is different. What makes one person happy might make another miserable.

In the face of so much contradictory, and often subjective, advice, what are you supposed to do if you want to live a happier life? Just forget about all that subjective advice and focus your energy and attention on science-proven facts.

“Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions.” – Dalai Lama

UCLA neuroscience researcher Alex Korb has spent a great deal of time studying the effects of different happiness strategies on the brain. His findings have a lot to teach us about what actually works when it comes to boosting happiness.

Korb’s research demonstrated that your thoughts–and the emotions you feel in response to those thoughts–have a profound impact on surprising areas of your brain.

Guilt and shame, for example, activate the brain’s reward center, which explains why we have such a strong tendency to heap guilt and shame upon ourselves. Likewise, worrying increases activity in the prefrontal cortex (the rational brain), which is why worrying can make you feel more in control than doing nothing at all.

1. Gratitude creates happiness. I’m not advocating worry, guilt, and shame as the path to happiness. The illustration shows why we tend to succumb to thoughts that fuel these emotions. The real neural antidepressant is gratitude. Gratitude boosts levels of serotonin and dopamine–the brain’s happy chemicals and the same chemicals targeted by antidepressant medications. The striking thing about gratitude is that it can work even when things aren’t going well for you. That’s because you don’t actually have to feel spontaneous gratitude in order to produce chemical changes in your brain; you just have to force yourself to think about something in your life that you appreciate. This train of thought activates your brain to make you feel happier.

2. Labeling negative feelings dilutes their power. There is an amazing amount of power in simply labeling your negative emotions. In one study, participants underwent fMRI scans of their brains while they labeled negative emotions. When they named these emotions, the brain’s prefrontal cortex took over and the amygdala (where emotions are generated) calmed down. This effect doesn’t just work with your own emotions; labeling the emotions of other people calms them down too, which is why FBI hostage negotiators frequently rely on this technique.

3. Making decisions feels good. Similar to naming emotions, making decisions engages the prefrontal cortex, which calms the amygdala and the rest of the limbic system. The key is to make a “good enough” decision. Trying to make the perfect decision causes stress. We’ve always known that, but now there’s scientific research that explains why. Making a “good enough” decision activates the dorsolateral prefrontal areas of the brain, calming emotions down and helping you feel more in control. Trying to make a perfect decision, on the other hand, ramps up ventromedial frontal activity–which basically means your emotions get overly involved in the decision-making process.

4. It helps you to lend a hand.Taking the time to help your colleagues not only makes them happy but also makes you happy. Helping other people gives you a surge of oxytocin, serotonin, and dopamine, all of which create good feelings. In a Harvard study, employees who helped others were 10 times more likely to be focused at work and 40% more likely to get a promotion. The same study showed that people who consistently provided social support to others were the most likely to be happy during times of high stress. As long as you make certain that you aren’t overcommitting yourself, helping others is sure to have a positive influence on your happiness.

5. Our brains are wired for touch. Humans are social animals, to the point that our brains react to social exclusion in the same way that they react to physical pain, with activity in the anterior cingulate and insula. Similarly, our brains are hardwired to interpret touch as social acceptance. Touch is one of the primary stimuli for releasing oxytocin, which calms the amygdala and, in turn, calms emotions. There are even studies that show that holding hands with a loved one actually reduces the brain’s response to pain. You might think that’s bad news for people who are socially isolated, but studies show that a massage increases serotonin by as much as 30%. Touch reduces stress hormones, decreases the perception of pain, improves sleep, and reduces fatigue.

Bringing It All Together

Kolb’s research highlights just how amazing the brain is, and he summarized his findings succinctly when he said, “Everything is interconnected. Gratitude improves sleep. Sleep reduces pain. Reduced pain improves your mood. Improved mood reduces anxiety, which improves focus and planning. Focus and planning help with decision-making. Decision-making further reduces anxiety and improves enjoyment. Enjoyment gives you more to be grateful for, which keeps that loop of the upward spiral going. Enjoyment makes it more likely you’ll exercise and be social, which, in turn, makes you happier.”

This Is How Much You Should Tip Your Wedding Vendors

When you’re planning a wedding, figuring out how much to tip wedding vendors is one of those details that’s often left to the very end of the planning process and creeps up on couples when they are juggling dozens of other last-minute details. Many people forget about tipping wedding vendors until the final days and, well, even hours before the wedding. How do I know this? To be totally honest, that’s just what happened to me when I was my planning my wedding, and I now see it all the time with our DIY Wedding Mentor clients (clearly there’s no judgement coming from me on this one!). So in order to avoid the last-minute stressor of figuring out who to tip and how much, you want to start thinking about tipping vendors now before you have too much going on and are too frazzled to straighten it all out.

Mom Uses Fruits And Veggies To Show How Much Her Baby Grew During Pregnancy

When California designer and home decor shop owner Nicole Mendez was pregnant with her second child, she came up with a great way to document her growing belly.

Inspired by BabyCenter’s “How big is your baby?” list, which uses corresponding fruits and vegetables to track a fetus’ size throughout pregnancy, Mendez purchased the produce and held each one in front of her stomach at various times during her nine months.

“Having something tangible to hold up to your belly really helps you to visualize your baby’s size, and makes you realize how fast they grow!” she told The Huffington Post.

Scroll down to see the mom’s clever photo series and head over to her website for more.

I Know This Much: From Soho to Spandau

I Know This Much: From Soho to Spandau

I Know This Much – by Gary Kemp, Spandau Ballet’s prime mover – is simply the freshest, most exciting and best-written memoir to arrive for years. Gary’s story begins in North London, where the Kemp family rented a home with no bathrooms and chickens in the yard. After a couple of failed attempts to kill his brother Martin, his parents gave him a guitar for Christmas. From schoolyard battles between the Bowie Boys and the Prog Rockers to Mrs Kemp’s firm insistence on net curtains, from acting for the Children’s Film Foundation to manning a fruit and veg stall on Saturdays, Gary brilliantly evokes an upbringing full of love, creativity and optimism. As the Thatcher years begin, Gary’s account of the outrageous London club scene centred around the Blitz and Billy’s is just sizzling. Out of this glamorous mayhem of kilt-wearing mascara’d peacocks would emerge Spandau Ballet – the band that would define the era, and hold high the victorious standard of the New Romantics. Gary’s thrilling journey with Spandau Ballet would see them record worldwide hits such as True, Gold and Through the Barricades, play the biggest stadiums in the world, and take to the stage in togas when their luggage gets lost in flight. Stallions, supermodels and dwarves would be hired for video shoots, and through it all, Gary records the wonderful friendships, and the slowly-building tensions that would eventually see five old friends facing each other in court. I Know This Much tells the story of Spandau Ballet, but it’s far more than a book about being in a band. Whether it’s meeting Ronnie Kray before filming The Krays, sketching out the fashions and subcultures of the day, or hanging out with Princess Diana, this book offers a story on every page. And all the more so because it’s all written – brilliantly – by Gary himself.

Kittens Make Epic Fight Scene From ‘The Lion King’ So Much Better

Question: How do you improve on an epic scene from a classic Disney movie?

Answer: Swap out the animated characters for live kittens. Keep all the action the same, just with kittens.

Here’s an example, using the climactic fight scene from “The Lion King.”

Grown-up Simba? Bam! He’s a kitten now. Scar? DONE. Kitten-ized.

We can’t imagine how long it took for YouTuber Pasdidée to wrestle his actors into line, but it’s truly a work of art.

It is not, however, the only time someone recreated “The Lion King” with kittens.

Your Water Footprint: The Shocking Facts About How Much Water We Use to Make Everyday Products

Your Water Footprint: The Shocking Facts About How Much Water We Use to Make Everyday Products

The average American lifestyle is kept afloat by about 2,000 gallons of H2O a day. The numbers are shocking. Your Water Footprint reveals the true cost of our lifestyle. A water footprint is the amount of fresh water used to produce the goods and services we consume, including growing, harvesting, packaging, and shipping. From the foods we eat to the clothes we wear to the books we read and the music we listen to, all of it costs more than what we pay at the check-out. The 125 footprint facts in this book show the true cost of our lifestyle and what it is doing to Earth, including draining it dry. The Virtual Water Concept shows the amount of water used in human activities. Presented in clever, understandable graphics, Your Water Footprint raises readers'' awareness of how much water is used to make the things we use, consume and grow.
What we put on our dinner table has a very high cost. Nearly 95 percent of our water footprint is hidden in the food we eat: One pound of lettuce costs 15 gallons of freshwater; mango 190 gallons; avocado 220 gallons; tofu 244 gallons; rice 403 gallons; olives 522 gallons; pork 1,630 gallons; butter 2,044 gallons; chocolate 2,847 gallons; and beef 2,500 to 5,000 gallons. A slice of bread costs 10 gallons but if you eat it with a slice of cheese, it takes another 13 gallons. One glass of beer takes 20 gallons of water, and just one standard cup of tea costs 120 same-sized cups of water. A cotton t-shirt takes almost as much water as beef, a pair of jeans even more. In fact, all aspects of our daily lives require water in some way, shape or form. The saying that nothing is free applies more to water than anything else we consume,
considering just three percent of the world''s water is drinkable and that we are using more of it than ever before. Factor in climate change, population growth and pollution and we have an unsustainable situation. Many experts predict dire water shortages if we continue on our current path. Your Water Footprint is riveting. Consumers of all ages will be stunned by what it reveals. It is an excellent reference and an exciting way to introduce the resource-consumption equation to students.

How Much Should You Spend on a Wedding Gift?

“How much should I spend?”
“How much are you spending?”
“How much money should I give?”

2015-05-27-1432767031-8660930-Depositphotos_4851705_m.jpg
With wedding season upon us, you’re very likely asking these questions. After all, “How much should I spend on a wedding gift?” seems to be the most often asked gift-giving question. Here’s a recent email from an “AskCheryl” reader on this subject.

Hi Cheryl,
I was recently having a discussion with a friend about what the average or acceptable amount would be for a monetary wedding gift. She hasn’t been to a wedding in a while and wants to be sure she is giving a reasonable gift. What do you think the gift amount should be?
Thanks, Mary Ann

Mary Ann’s friend is like many of us. We just don’t know how much we are expected to spend on a wedding gift. Unfortunately, there’s no simple answer and no set amount you “should” spend (or amount you should give if gifting cash). The amount you spend is dependent upon your budget and relationship with the wedding couple (or their parents). While it’s common practice to spend more for a close relative or if you are very close to the couple, again, it’s dependent upon your budget. No one should “break the bank” and spend more than they can afford. Additionally, the amount considered “acceptable” varies by culture and region of the country.

Interestingly, there’s a myth that continues to circulate among some guests. They’re under the impression that they should base the cost of the gift on how much they think the couple is spending on food and entertainment. This modern myth is simply not true. Again, the amount you spend is strictly a matter of your budget, how close you are to the bride and groom, and what you think is an appropriate gift.

“It’s a bad idea to use the price-per-plate as a measure for how much you should spend on the wedding gift,” says Jessica Silvester, a deputy editor and wedding expert with New York magazine. “You wouldn’t give your best friend a less expensive gift just because she was having a more casual affair.”

To help you, I’ve put together some averages and guidelines for wedding gifts and bridal shower gifts.

2015-05-28-1432827422-4716677-HPTableWeddingGift.jpg

What guests spend can also vary significantly by location or region. You can use the above as a guideline, but customs in your family or area may be higher or lower. I can share that the average amount spent on a wedding gift in 2014 through RegistryFinder.com was $ 120.

If you choose to buy from the couple’s wedding registry, we recommend purchasing early, so you have the best selection of gifts and price ranges. RegistryFinder.com makes it easy to find all of the couple’s registries in one convenient location just by entering the name of the bride or groom.

Tell us what you think! Please comment below and let us know how much you normally spend on a wedding gift, or what you feel is appropriate.

If you have questions or comments about gift giving or wedding etiquette, email me at AskCheryl@RegistryFinder.com.

Emails in this column are received from actual blog readers. Emails may be edited for spelling and grammar, or to remove sensitive information, however, we are careful not to alter the intent or content of the question.

Shonda Rhimes Nails How Much Easier It Is To Be A Man, In One Flawless Speech

Shonda Rhimes knows a thing or two about empowering women on-screen — just watch any of her three primetime TV shows — and on May 18, she used her platform to encourage women off-screen to absorb some of that badass feminist energy.

The Feminist Majority Foundation honored Rhimes and “Orange Is the New Black” showrunner Jenji Kohan at the 10th annual Global Women’s Rights Awards. Rhimes delivered a powerful speech about feminism, declaring: “I absolutely love being a woman. I mean, I love it. It never occurred to me not to love it.” Later, she added, “I mean, I think I’m fabulous.”

She also told a story about a time when her assistant told her that she wanted to experience life as a man for a day, reported Variety. Rhimes said her assistant wanted to know what it would be like “to have all of that,” and then the showrunner proceeded to break down exactly what “all of that” actually means.

My assistant wants to walk through the world just for a day without some guy hitting on her when she runs to Starbucks to get me coffee. She wants to not be called “cute” by the security guard. She wants to not be told that she should be a model. She wants to not see the look of surprise on someone’s face when she tells them where she went to college. She wants her boobs to no longer be a topic of conversation. She wants to no longer make 70 cents on the dollar. She wants to not have old men legislate her vagina’s rights. She wants to not know that a glass ceiling ever existed. She wants to not believe that having a baby would end her career. She wants everything in the world to be made for her, be about her and speak mostly to her. Because that’s how it is for men.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Rhimes said she rejected her assistant’s wish, instead encouraging her to embrace her womanhood — even when it seems like a curse. “Living in the possession of a vagina is not a hindrance. It’s not a flaw, it is a gift,” she said.

“Lead the life you want to lead,” Rhimes continued. “Be whoever you want to be. Have the babies. Be the CEO. Lean out. Lean in — on your own terms. Just run this thing because I don’t want the girls wishing they could be men for a day. I don’t even want men wishing they could be women. I just want those words ‘all of that,’ I want all of that to apply to all of us.”

Yes, Shonda — to all of that.

I Just Want To Wear Sweat Suits to Work — Is That Too Much To Ask?

I have long been a proponent of function over fashion. Maybe it’s my total aversion to physical discomfort, but I just could never get behind spending the limited time I have on this earth with sore feet, or pants that make it hard to sit down, no matter how good they look. In fact, I would literally spend my life in a series of rotating sweat suits if only it were socially acceptable.

And I’m not saying that I roam the streets and workplace in my desired uniform (a.k.a. sweats and/or flannel pajamas). I’m a savvy enough person to know that my preferred choice of clothing would do more harm than good for me professionally (if not outright get me fired). So at the office or on any official business I stay within the expected and even “fashionable” arena. But I also know that the second I get home I’ll be changing into clothes I actually want to be wearing, and I know this is generally true of most everyone else I know.

So why do we do this to ourselves? Why do we, as thinking, rational creatures create a code of conduct that actively doesn’t feel good? Many people will argue that formal business attire increases worker productivity. But the actual consensus on this is hazy at best, and there has never actually been a single scientific study that supports it (and just ask the infamously casual yet immensely productive tech culture of Silicon Valley for some anecdotal evidence to the contrary).

I’ve also heard people say it’s a matter of self-respect. That the way you present yourself to the world is a reflection of how you believe others should treat you; that taking pride in your appearance is a way of showing pride in yourself. And to this I can only muster a half-hearted “meh.” I often feel just the opposite. I generally don’t care what others think of my style choices or appearance because I have self-respect and pride from within. I’m confident in what I have to offer when it comes to my mind and my ability to articulate my thoughts. Shouldn’t that be the better measure of self-love?

And others have just said, “Hey — at the end of the day, we’re animals, and we want to look attractive. It’s the most natural thing in the world.” My first response to this is simply, wait — isn’t the workplace one of the spaces we definitely shouldn’t be worrying about how attractive we are? And furthermore, I’m sitting here in front of an electric box that connects me with millions of other living souls, getting ready to file my taxes, and thinking about how I need to remember to pick up Drano for my shower. I think it’s safe to say we as humans have moved far passed the “we’re all just animals” stage of existence. I don’t buy that we’re all just slaves to our instincts or don’t have it in us to overcome “animalistic” tendencies.

So why do we do it? Why do we — myself included — consent to put ourselves through daily discomfort when we could literally all be working in a mecca of velour suits with elastic waistbands and cozy slippers? I genuinely don’t know but am curious what others think. And in the meantime, I’ll be the one at my desk waiting for the workplace revolution to come, Snuggie at the ready.

High Heels For Men Show Just How Much Gender Expression Has Changed

“Never before have a few inches mattered so much.” The tagline for an upcoming exhibit at the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto says everything about guys in heels.

Today, of course, high-heeled shoes are synonymous with femininity. Men who want to add a bit of height have to do so with inserts on the DL, and any non-cowboys wandering around with heels visibly higher than normal might get a few judgy looks. But for about 130 years in the 17th and 18th centuries, Western men wore heeled shoes as an expression of power.

bata 72

Italian, Ferradini, 1972-1975. Worn by Elton John. Celebrities strutted on stage in outrageous outfits and high glittering heels such as this pair, but more conservative men also paired higher heeled shoes with their suits.

It makes sense if you consider the value placed on height. Tall people, particularly men, are associated with confidence and prestige — we actually tend to pay them higher salaries. So one of the questions Elizabeth Semmelhack, curator of the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto, poses through the exhibit is not why men wore heels at one point, but why they ever stopped.

“We’re so nervous about the idea of men in heels today,” Semmelhack told The Huffington Post. “Hopefully, what this exhibition will do is highlight for people that what’s really curious about the history of men in heels is our current attitude towards it.”

Semmelhack theorizes that heeled shoes were borrowed from Asia, where they were used for horseback riding, in the early 1600s. Persia had been gaining political influence around that time, and exoticism in dress was a symbol of high status. It wasn’t long before women began wearing heels, too. Semmelhack explained it was (somewhat unsurprisingly) trendy for women to borrow from mens’ closets in the 1600s, and there they found high-heeled shoes. Never before in the history of mankind did everyone’s butts look so fantastic.

bata 1

Persian, 17th century.

The heels themselves became gendered, with slender heels for women and blocky ones for men. Then around the middle of the 18th century, men started to abandon them. But there have been exceptions. John Lennon wore boots with heels, followed by plenty of glam rockers. “Elevator shoes” (with height-boosting insoles) provided a discreet option. And somehow the cowboy boot — which is definitely a high heeled shoe for guys — has stuck around as a symbol of rugged masculinity. As we reconsider notions of gender and its role in society, the heel is a prime example of how arbitrary definitions of gender can be.

Feel free to imagine Ron Swanson in any of the shoes below. If you find yourself in Toronto, the exhibition, titled “Standing Tall: The Curious History of Men in Heels,” runs from May 8, 2015, until May 2016.

English, c. 1690-1715. This pair of men’s mules features high flared heels in keeping with turn of the 18th century fashion. The red leather covering the high heels was meant to bring attention to them and also a conveyed a sense of continental sophistication as red heels were famously worn in the court of French King XIV.

American, Justin Boots, 20th century. The packer boot, like the more iconic pull-on cowboy boot, originated on the frontier and was worn for horseback riding. Evolving from 19th century lace-up boots, packers allowed wearers to customize the fit of the boot. The addition of the low-slung heel enabled the boot to stay stable in the stirrup.

American, Tony Lama, late 20th century. The cowboy emerged in the West after the Civil War pushing cattle to railheads in the 1860s to 1880s.

The Loft Is So Much Better Than You Think It Is Going to Be

The Loft is a surprisingly entertaining film that keeps the audience in the dark as to its villain(s) until the very end. The fact the ending is logical and difficult to anticipate makes this movie an above average feature. There is also some solid acting from a cast not particularly known for the type of roles they are inhabiting.

The premise of the film is that five friends partner up to buy a loft where they can have complete privacy. Vincent (Karl Urban) is the man with the plan but his buddies Luke (Wentworth Miller), Marty (Eric Stonestreet) and Philip (Matthias Schoenaerts) eagerly commit to their share of payment and accept their keys. All of the men are married but this does not seem to be a problem except for Chris (James Marsden) who intends to be faithful to his wife (Rhona Mitra). His fidelity lasts until he meets Anne (Rachel Taylor) and falls completely in lust.

Now all five men are using the lift for their various trysts. Everything is going smoothly until one morning they discover a body in the bed. Since there is no sign of a break in and the alarm code has been entered they become suspicious of each other. Still all claim complete innocence, but in this film no one is who or what they claim to be.

Both Urban and Marsden have more screen time than the others so they could be considered the leads. However in this movie the supporting players get to have the meatier scenes. Stonestreet who is best known for his current role on Modern Family as Cameron, is a complete surprise here as the drunken, woman chasing Marty. Equally good is Miller, who once starred in the Fox series Prison Break. Here he is an intellectual and also a shy man.

The movie operates with a present day story interspersed with numerous flashbacks. In many movies this has proven to be an annoying way of telling a story and I generally prefer a linear approach. In this film, however, the back and forth storytelling works. Each flashback provides another peeling back of a layer of deception. There is one “aha” moment after another.

In The Loft movie the women are not the prominent players but Isabel Lucas and Taylor, who play Sarah and Anne, manage to make their presence known. Both are beautiful women and that adds to the validity of their roles.

The movie is rated R for violence, profanity and nudity.

The Loft arrived with little advance fanfare so it might not even be on your entertainment radar. If you like movies that keep you in the dark until the reveal then this is a movie you want to see. Believe me, it is so much better than you think it is going to be ,

I scored The Loft a high up 7 out of 10.

Billy Crystal: Gay Scenes On TV Sometimes ‘Too Much For Me’

Billy Crystal was one of the first actors to play a gay character on television, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t wary of some of the gay content that ends up on the small screen.

The beloved comedian opened up about his feelings regarding the nature of gay scenes on television while speaking at a panel for the Television Critics Association on Sunday in Pasadena, California, the Independent reports.

“Sometimes I think, ‘Ah that’s too much for me,'” Crystal said. “Sometimes, it’s just pushing it a little too far for my taste and I’m not going to reveal to you which ones they are.”

As Deadline reports, Crystal also spoke about his groundbreaking gay character, Jodie Dallas, which he played on ABC’s “Soap” from 1977 to 1981.

Crystal spoke about the role on Sunday, ET Canada reports:

There were times where I would say to [the actor who played his boyfriend], ‘Bob, “I love you,’ and the audience would laugh nervously, because, you know, it’s a long time ago, that I’d feel this anger. I wanted to stop the tape and go, ‘What is your problem?’ Because it made you sort of very self-conscious about what we were trying to do then. And now it’s just, I see it and I just hope people don’t abuse it and shove it in our face — well, that sounds terrible — to the point of it just feels like an everyday kind of thing.

Crystal is currently promoting his upcoming new FX series “The Comedians,” which is his first television series since “Soap.”

In recent years, more and more queer content is making its way onto the airwaves. Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender characters and storylines can be seen in popular shows like “Looking,” “Modern Family,” “Empire,” “Transparent,” “Orange is the New Black,” “American Horror Story” and “Glee.”

Earlier this month, comedian Kevin Hart also sounded off on gay roles in Hollywood. “I can’t [play a gay character] because I don’t think I’m really going to dive into that role 100 percent, because of the insecurities about myself trying to play that part,” he told hosts of the Breakfast Club on New York’s Power 105.1. “What I think people are going to think while I’m trying to do this is going to stop me from playing that part the way I’m supposed to.”

Domhnall Gleeson Lost So Much Weight For ‘Unbroken’ His Contacts Didn’t Fit

Angelina Jolie’s “Unbroken” is the story of Olympic long-distance runner and Air Force bombardier Louis Zamperini, and his struggles to survive as a prisoner of war during the last stages of World War II. But before that happens, “Unbroken” is also about three men lost at sea. On May 27, 1943, Zamperini’s plane crashed into the Pacific Ocean leaving only a trio of survivors: Zamperini, Francis “Mac” McNamara and Russell Allen “Phil” Phillips, played respectively in the film by Jack O’Connell, Finn Wittrock and Domhnall Gleeson.

“It was a great experience. A tough one but a great one,” Gleeson said of the raft sequences in a recent interview with HuffPost Entertainment. The 31-year-old actor lost what he previously called a “sizable amount of weight” for the role.

“Toward the end, getting toward the dehydration phase, I had to wear these contact lenses, because their eyes were red,” Gleeson recalled. “My contact lenses stopped fitting my eyes, because I was so dehydrated and had lost so much weight that everything had changed. But we were still trying to screw them in there — and you were hungry and overworked and physically and mentally exhausted — so then it got to the place where it wasn’t much fun. Angie reminded me of it. I had forgotten totally. I’ve shut out some of the experience.”

Not that Gleeson thinks he had it too rough compared to what happened to Zamperini and Phillips, both of whom would survive for 47 days on the open ocean with nothing more than rain water and whatever fish they were able to catch as sustenance. (McNamara died on the raft after 33 days.)

“Every time you thought about complaining, you were like, ‘What the hell am I saying?'” Gleeson joked. “You had to suck it up.”

unbroken

Since playing Bill Weasley in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” Gleeson has put together a tremendous resume of varied film roles. This year alone, he featured in not just “Unbroken,” but also “Frank,” an indie rock comedy, and “Calvary,” in which he co-starred opposite his father, actor Brendan Gleeson. Coming in 2015 are the dramas “Ex Machina” and “Brooklyn” plus a little something called “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” Gleeson’s role in “Episode VII” is of the top-secret variety, and while discussing plot details of director J.J. Abrams’ film are strictly forbidden, he was able to weigh in on the recent teaser trailer.

“It just made me very excited,” Gleeson said. “I felt like a kid again. I finished it with a big stupid smile plastered on my face. It was exactly the kind of feel that I was hoping the movie would have. If the movie feels the same way as the trailer, we’re going to be in good shape.”

But before heading to a galaxy far, far away, Gleeson will finish up work on Alejandro González Iñárritu’s “The Revenant” with Tom Hardy and Leonardo DiCaprio in lead roles. It’s another difficult survival story about men pushed to their limits. “We’re pacing around the snowy mountains of Calgary, carrying packs and dead bodies,” Gleeson said. “It’s a pretty full-on movie, but it’s great.”

Having spent so much of the last year working on arduous projects like “Unbroken” and “The Revenant,” does Gleeson long for the days of “About Time,” the charming Richard Curtis romantic comedy that he led last year?

“I got to get Richard writing, man!” Gleeson said with a laugh. “That way I can go back to doing something full of joy, love and hope instead of suffering and trials and tribulations where I need a psychiatric evaluation after I’m done filming.”

“Unbroken” is out Christmas Day.

ManServants For Hire Are Like Strippers, But So Much Better

Let’s be real ladies: a greased up man shoving his banana-hammock-clad junk in your face is not the definition of a good time.

Knowing that most women aren’t as enthused with strippers as men are, one San Francisco based start-up decided to change the game and give women what they really want: Man servants.

The company, appropriately called ManServants, states that their vision is “to empower women to make their own rules. Rules a ManServant may then follow.” The idea is that instead of hiring creepy strippers for their bachelorette parties, women can hire gorgeous models to do the things they actually desire: hold their umbrellas, serve them Champagne by the pool, massage their bodies with their sexy model hands and even snap selfies for them (which in the old days was called “taking a picture”).

According to the website, each Manservant is customizable, just like a Build-A-Bear! Customers can tell the company what they want their Manservant to look like, what he should wear, how he should behave and even give him a new name (the site suggests “Garçon, Bartholomew, or Ryan Gosling.”)

All of this comes at a price of course. The company’s founders tell The Huffington Post that prices will be available in September when the service launches in San Francisco.

Oh, and if you think Manservants is just an escort service dressed up as a bachelorette schtick, think again. The website explicitly states, “A ManServant keeps his penis in his pants and out of the lady’s face.” Phew!

Watch the hilarious advertisement above for more info. Then, let us know in the comments section if you would rent a man for the day.

But in the end the whole book came to hang on that statement. I can’t begin to understand the creative process but I think it’s a marvelous thing.” Margaret J. McMaster From the Critics: “Her latest book is compelling – the reader is gripped by the story, enthralled by the characters, and gratified by the way the story curls itself into a satisfying tale. And it is a tale of the sea, or more accurately, our local fresh waters of Lake Erie. It is an adventure-mystery with a little romance thrown in

These Things Would Be Deal Breakers If We Didn’t Love Our Spouses So Much

Living with the love of your life can be awesome — the nightly Netflix binges and cuddle sessions are definite pluses, not to mention the convenience of regular sex and someone to help you eat all of your Trader Joe’s groceries before they go bad. But despite all the obvious perks, let’s be honest: it’s not always a walk in the park. Below, 11 Redditors vent about the little things that are hardest to accept about their significant others.
