Special Entertainment News Bulletin:
From what we’ve understood about the life cycle of stars, a supernova is the thrilling death knell: a violent display signifying the end for a star. At least, we thought that’s how it went.
When a supernova occurs, a star brightens for about 100 days before going dark. But one star has kept the display up for 600 days now.
According to a study in Nature, supernova iPTF14hls refuses to die. The star was first observed back in September 2014 and chalked up as a fairly textbook example of a star’s death.
The supernova has qualities never before seen by scientists. “Instead of a 100-day plateau,” the study reports, “the light curve of iPTF14hls lasts over 600 days,” and includes “five distinct peaks” where its brightness varies”by as much as 50%.”

Movie producer Brett Ratner has been accused of multiple cases of sexual misconduct or harassment — including by actresses Olivia Munn and Natasha Henstridge.
In an article published by the Los Angeles Times Wednesday, six women spoke out against the longtime Hollywood power player, 48, who directed the Rush Hour series and produced movies including Horrible Bosses and The Revenant.
In a statement to the L.A. Times, Ratner’s attorney Martin Singer vehemently disputed the specific allegations and said “no woman has ever made a claim against him for sexual misconduct or sexual harassment. Furthermore, no woman has ever requested or received any financial settlement from my client.”
Munn claims that while visiting the set of the 2004 Ratner-directed film After the Sunset, he masturbated in front of her.
“He walked out … with his belly sticking out, no pants on, shrimp cocktail in one hand and he was furiously masturbating in the other,” Munn said. “And before I literally could even figure out where to escape or where to look, he ejaculated.”
Munn said she let out a “startled scream” and raced out of the trailer. She said she immediately told the man who told her to go into the trailer. “It wasn’t a shock. It wasn’t surprise,” Munn recalled the man saying. “It was just, ‘Ugh, sorry about that.’ ”
Munn said she told her sister, Sara Potts, about the incident, who urged her to speak with a lawyer. Potts confirmed Munn’s account to the L.A. Times.
The actress said the attorney dissuaded her from going up against a powerful director.
“That did leave an impact on me,” Munn said. “How broken do women have to be before people listen?”
The actress wrote about the alleged incident in her 2010 collection of essays without naming Ratner. Later in 2010, Munn claims she saw Ratner at a party, where he reportedly bragged about ejaculating on magazine covers featuring her image.
“I’ve made specific, conscientious choices not to work with Brett Ratner,” Munn told The Times.
“It feels as if I keep going up against the same bully at school who just won’t quit,” she said. “You just hope that enough people believe the truth and for enough time to pass so that you can’t be connected to him anymore.”
Ratner “vehemently disputes” Munn’s claims, Singer told The Times.
Actress and model Natasha Henstridge claims that when she was 19, she was forced to perform oral sex on Ratner in his New York apartment after watching a movie with a group of friends. Henstridge alleges Ratner blocked the doorway when she tried to leave and began touching himself.
“He strong-armed me in a real way,” she said. “He physically forced himself on me. At some point, I gave in and he did his thing.”
Singer disputed the allegation to the L.A. Times, saying Ratner spent time with Henstridge but claiming the actress was “upset after learning my client had a girlfriend who he would not leave” for her.
Actresses Jaime Ray Newman and Katharine Towne claim Ratner made unwanted, aggressive advances to them on a plane and at a party, respectively. Singer disputed both accounts.
Four people involved on the film Rush Hour 2 also came forward to describe a “sexually charged” work environment, and two background actresses said Ratner pursued them and offered them speaking roles. Singer disputed the claims, and James M. Freitag, an assistant director on the set, told The Times in a statement that “any complaints of any kind including sexual harassment would be immediately directed to my attention. There were no complaints reported to me whatsoever.”
Ratner, whose next project as a director is a Hugh Hefner biography starring Jared Leto, has been romantically linked in the past to stars including Mariah Carey and Lindsay Lohan.

Fighting Poverty in Sub-Saharan Africa: the Multiple Roles of Legumes in Integrated Soil Fertility Management
Legumes play an important role in the cropping systems of sub Saharan Africa (SSA). Legumes are an important source of nutrition to both humans and livestock by providing the much needed protein, minerals, fibre and vitamins. The sale of legumes seed, leaves and fibre generates income for the marginalized communities especially women. Cultivation of legumes is essential for the regeneration of nutrient-deficient soils. By biologically fixing nitrogen (BNF) in the soil, legumes provide a relatively low-cost method of replacing otherwise expensive inorganic nitrogen in the soil. This enhances soil fertility and boosts subsequent cereal crop yields. Production of legumes in SSA is however; hampered by a number of constraints among them low and declining soil fertility, low soil pH, high salinity, drought and flooding, poor access to improved germplasm, diseases, pests and weeds. Farmers need to learn how to overcome these constraints if the full benefits of legumes are to be gained. This book presents a synthesis of research work on legumes and draws attention to the importance of legumes in integrated soil fertility management (ISFM) and poverty alleviation in SSA.

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — A New York City clinic where Joan Rivers suffered a fatal complication during a medical procedure made several errors, including failing to keep proper medication records and snapping cellphone photos of her while she was unconscious, state health investigators said Monday.
Rivers, who was 81, died Sept. 4. New York City’s medical examiner found she died of brain damage due to lack of oxygen after she stopped breathing during an endoscopy days earlier.
A report released by the state Department of Health on Monday cited Yorkville Endoscopy for numerous deficiencies related to the Rivers case, although negligence is not alleged. The comedian’s death was classified as a therapeutic complication.
As a result of the state investigation, the federal Department of Health and Human Services has given Yorkville Endoscopy until Jan. 7 to correct deficiencies to avoid losing Medicare accreditation.
In a statement to NBC News on Monday, Yorkville said it has submitted a plan to state and federal accreditation agencies addressing all issues raised. It said the physicians referenced in the report no longer provide services there.
The state report said the Manhattan clinic “failed to identify deteriorating vital signs and provide timely intervention” in Rivers’ case.
Investigators found conflicting information in Rivers’ medical records regarding the amount of the sedation drug Propofol she was administered and about the time resuscitation was initiated. They also faulted the clinic for allowing a surgeon who was not a member of the medical staff to perform two nose and throat scoping procedures.
Investigators also noted that a staff member took cellphone photos of Rivers and a surgeon while she was under anesthesia without her consent and in violation of the facility’s cellphone policy.

I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2012. I was 27, turning 28 a few weeks later at the time, and engaged to be married the following year. One minute I was an excited, expectant bride obsessing over mermaid vs. princess-cut gowns, and the next I was strapped to an IV with steroids pumping though my body to calm the inflammation in my optic nerve.
After that, the changes happened almost over night. My eye, a victim of optic neuritis, went dark and blind. My body, strong from the steroids but weak once they wore off, became a stranger to me. I suddenly noticed the tremors in my hand and the way my leg would suddenly become numb in the morning. It all meant one thing: I would have to take better care of myself if I wanted to survive.
And I did. I started going to yoga to improve my balance. I started taking vitamins (hello, Vitamin D) and began eating healthier. I said goodbye to processed foods and embraced fruits and vegetables. I also dusted life’s petty nuances off my shoulders — those minor irritants that used to cause me extreme panic were now put into perspective. Traffic? Who cares? I’m in no hurry. Annoying Facebook post by a frenemy who could afford to be more modest? Not my problem.
Fight with the husband? Well, that took more time to let go. But I did. And ultimately, I feel the changes I made have helped not only my physical health, but my marriage as well.
The first thing I did was learn how to stop reacting. Whenever I would feel angry or overly passionate, I’d have a physical reaction. Literally. My right eye would twitch and what looked like gray film would envelop my cornea. I could feel the energy drain from my body, and soon enough my legs would go numb. My hands would prickle with tension.
And so I worked hard to stop reacting — not because it was bad for my marriage but because it was bad for my body. I did not want to let my body succumb to weakness or pain because of something I perceived to be “right” or “wrong”. It simply wasn’t worth it — not for me or my marriage.
But my attitude adjustment didn’t happen over night. It was a gradual process, but eventually I was able to regulate my reactions. First, I had to kill my darlings: Just because I had something clever to say didn’t mean I should say it, especially if it was going to cause a fight or hurt his feelings. So when I would get upset, I would try to understand the real issue. Instead of involving my husband, I finally listened to my therapist and involved my pen and paper. And thus, my love of journaling to resolve issues was born.
When an issue would arise, I would work through the process on paper. Was I being irrational? Was I being petty? Did this really matter in the long run? And if it did, was now the time to fix it? Before long, I was able to just be — without having to comment and pick on everything, even if I saw and noticed everything (and trust me, I did).
For instance, once my husband and I were hanging out in the living room when he said something that upset me. It was a reoccurring issue, and one I wasn’t even sure I was right about, but I did not respond to him. Instead, I left the room. Once away from the pressure and tension, I took to my journal and started transcribing my feelings. I was mean and clever in my writing, and by the time I was done scribbling my passionate points about what a poo-poo head I thought my husband was being, I felt better. When he came to see why I had left the room, I told him I was writing notes about him and that it was my way of dealing with my feelings. “Better than fighting, right?” He couldn’t argue with that, and we moved on with our evening, fight-free.
Aside from my MS flare-ups helping me tune out life’s ugly messes, just about every article about healthy relationships notes that the best course of action is to pick your battles. Those articles are spot on. What I’ve learned from having a physical reaction to stress is that most things don’t really matter, and that it’s better to live a peaceful life than a petty one. I picked that road and it has made all the difference.
