Believe! Cher to turn back time with musical

Cher has confirmed that a musical about her life will debut on Broadway next year.

ENTERTAINMENT SPECIALS:

Cher Is Gifting Us With A Broadway Musical Based On Her Life

Thanks to Cher, we’re ready to leave this soggy, half-eaten sandwich of a year behind and fast forward to the bright (and likely beaded) future of 2018.

In a tweet heard ‘round the divasphere on Tuesday night, the Goddess of Pop announced that a musical based on her life is set to arrive on Broadway next year. It will have actors. It will have dancers. It will have singers. And, according to our best guesses, it will have the greatest costumes and wigs to ever grace the Great White Way.

The show will feature hits from throughout Cher’s decadeslong career. So far, we know that Jason Moore (”Avenue Q,” “Pitch Perfect”) is set to direct the musical, Rick Elice (”Jersey Boys”) is set to write the book, and Jeffrey Seller (”Hamilton”) and Flody Suarez (”Rise”) are set to produce.

The Hollywood Reporter noted that Cher previously tweeted approval of the musical back in January ― after an “an ultra-secretive reading of the show” featuring Jillian Mueller, Lena Hall and Lesli Margherita as different Chers ― exclaiming, “I sobbed & laughed, & I was prepared not 2like it. Audience clapped after songs, & gave it standing ovation.”

A November 2016 casting notice revealed that characters dubbed Babe, Lady and Star will represent Cher at various times in her life. A few other figures we can expect to see cast in the musical: Sonny Bono, Cher’s parents, Bob Mackie, David Geffen, Gregg Allman, Robert Altman, Rob Camilletti and, yes, Sigmund Freud.

Cher has yet to reveal more details since her Tuesday evening tweet. In fact, shortly after her all-caps announcement, she resumed her usual social media duties: calling out President Donald Trump.

Vladimir Putin Shows Off His Musical Skills On A Piano In China

We’re guessing he didn’t take requests.

Russian President Vladimir Putin showed off his piano skills in Beijing Sunday, playing a few tunes while waiting for Chinese President Xi Jinping at a state guesthouse, The New York Times reported.

Putin tickled the ivories with a pair of 1950s, Soviet-era tunes, Vasily Solovyov-Sedoi’s “Evening Song” and Tikhon Khrennikov’s “Moscow Windows,” the Times noted.

He’s played the piano before in public ― and his performance shouldn’t be too surprising. The Russian leader isn’t shy about displaying himself as a macho renaissance man, also participating in judo, ice hockey and horseback riding ― the latter sometimes shirtless.

Putin was in Beijing to discuss a $ 1 billion economic plan called “One Belt, One Road” that is intended to benefit dozens of countries, according to news outlets.

Twitter was amused by the president’s performance.

New Musical Shines Light On ‘Paris Is Burning’ Star And The Mummified Man Found In Her Closet

For over a year before it premiered this past weekend at the Rep Stage regional theatre outside Baltimore, the musical “Dorian’s Closet” was sparking buzz in the media, from Out magazine and the LGBT press to the Baltimore Sun and theater journals. Playwright Richard Mailman, who wrote the book and lyrics, fielded interviews while the show was in rehearsals over those long months, awaiting its debut.

The intense interest isn’t at all surprising. With music by Ryan Hasse and directed by Joseph W. Ritsch, “Dorian’s Closet” is based on the life of Dorian Corey, a prominent subject of Jennie Livingston’s groundbreaking 1990 documentary film, “Paris Is Burning,” about the remarkable Harlem drag balls of the 1980s and the powerfully-bonded community of black and Latino gay and trans people who created them. “Dorian’s Closet” has all of the glamour and the sequin ball gowns and the show-stopping numbers one would expect, relaying the story of a legendary figure on the Harlem ball scene who became internationally famous as a star in the beloved documentary.

Corey, who used female pronouns and was the “mother” of the House of Corey, succumbed to AIDS in 1993. Soon after, her notoriety shot even higher, when police found a mummy in the closet of her Harlem apartment ― a dead, preserved body of a man who was killed by a gunshot wound, likely 15 years earlier. “Dorian’s Closet,” via musical numbers performed by a grippingly talented cast, follows that story, taking us first back to Corey’s early years in Manhattan. Mailman, who’s worked on many stage and television productions ― but for whom this is his first musical ― discussed the show, the storyline and and where it’s all going, in an interview with me on SiriusXM Progress. This is an edited version of that conversation.

Michelangelo Signorile:  Looking at Dorian Corey’s story, what made you decide, ‘This would be a great musical’?
Richard Mailman: Why wouldn’t a mummy in the closet make the best musical ever? [Laughter] You know, all those years ago when I saw “Paris is Burning,” it screamed out to be a musical. Obviously this isn’t a musical version of “Paris is Burning.” But just the whole world ― the balls, the drag queens, their performing, that’s definitely ripe for a musical. But I was always a fan of theatrical backstage stories. There’s totally that element of Dorian’s career ― how she ended up in New York, working at [the drag bar] Sal’s in Times Square, and in the Harlem balls. But throw in what they found in the closet after she left it there and, you know, that’s a fabulous number! When I first saw the movie, I was totally intrigued by her.

She was the mother of the House of Corey. These were [queer] families [of choice], these houses [which competed in runway walking and voguing against one another at the balls].
There’s all of those elements as well [in “Dorian’s Closet”]. The stories of all of those children ― a lot of them tragic ― that were part of those houses and hers… just what was going on in New York at that time and around that community. I really think that right now, especially with what’s going on politically in the world right now, particularly in this country ― obviously we’ve taken a real slide backward. But I think in a way the story now becomes even more important ― for people to remember what we went through and the struggle we went through. And do we really want to go back there? There’s a lot of that in there too.

For over a year before it premiered, the show was getting this incredible buzz and it just keeps increasing and increasing right up to today. You’ve been doing interviews for about a year.
A lot of that has to do with the fact that people know “Paris Is Burning.” I think we’ve forgotten about how much of an impact that movie had. For a small documentary, how many people remember it. And it still holds up well. It’s still relevant. People remember Dorian. About a year ago when Rep Stage announced their season, and we were included in that, word got out and it just exploded. When people heard about it, they went crazy about it. It made me nervous at first. But it really made me feel good. I started getting so many emails from people who remember Dorian and really, really wanted to see her story told. I should preface the whole thing by saying it is somewhat a fictional account of her life because there’s a lot we don’t know.

There’s a lot we don’t know about the man she purportedly killed and mummified and put in the closet. Was it a boyfriend? Was it a robber? Was it both ― a scammer? There are so many different theories that are out there about what transpired. You had to take [one] narrative and run with it.
The scary part was not knowing the truth. But there was a moment when I realized that the story we really wanted to tell was not so much who he was and how it happened. But how someone could keep a body in their closet for over 15 years and what would make a person do that. By the time you get to the end of the story you understand what these people were going through and what they were faced with.

Stephen Scott Wormley, who plays Dorian Corey is spectacular and James Thomas Frisbee, who plays Jesse Torres, another drag performer, is also amazing.
Doing a musical is not easy. Getting even just a small production out there is very difficult and takes a long time and there are a lot of elements involved. This show rests really on Dorian’s shoulders. During almost the entire show she’s onstage. So you’ve got to have a performer not only who can carry that vocally but also who can create this character that people can fall in love with. And I have to say, this [past] weekend [audiences] took to him ― it was amazing. He does a beautiful job with [Dorian].

It has already received some great reviews after the premiere. That’s got to feel good.
It feels really, really good. You kind of lose perspective. You’re locked in a theater, trying to bring it together. You don’t know how it will fly with people. But it was kind of amazing [opening night]. All of a sudden it hit me ― they’re really, really getting it. The thing that I’m just so thrilled about more than anything is that people are walking out, feeling really [good.] This is not a happy story ―

No, but it is kind of uplifting at the end.
When I first saw Dorian, there was something about her ― to quote a song in the show. She does have this optimistic outlook in life.

Where does the show [performed at Rep Stage in Maryland until May 14] go from here?
From everything that everyone’s been saying to us, they really feel there’s a way bigger life for this show. It could happen any number of ways. I’m ready for whatever anyone what’s to do with it. I’m ready.

You Can Soon Buy Tickets To The ‘Mean Girls’ Musical, You Pathetic Loser

Good news, people who were in high school in 2004 and still feel like they are in high school in 2017.

“Mean Girls,” Tina Fey’s classic comedy exploring the many creative ways young women torture one another to rise up on the food chain of popularity, is headed to Broadway.

But first, it’s stopping in D.C.

What is the 411? Tickets to #MeanGirlsDC go on sale on FRIDAY, APRIL 28! Sign up and we'll remind you. Link in bio.

A post shared by Mean Girls Broadway (@meangirlsbway) on

On April 28, tickets go on sale for the world premiere of the highly anticipated musical adaptation, which follows fresh blood Cady Heron who, after starting at a new school in Illinois, is seemingly adopted by a trio of popular girls called The Plastics. Spoiler alert: they aren’t very nice.

The Broadway plot description sounds pretty familiar:

After years of living with her zoologist parents in Africa, Cady Heron moves to Illinois and must find where she fits in the social hierarchy. A sweet, naive newbie, Cady quickly attracts the attention of The Plastics, a trio of popular frenemies led by the vicious and calculating Regina George. When Cady devises a plan to end Regina’s reign, she learns that you can’t cross a Queen Bee without getting stung.

Thankfully, Fey herself adapted the “Mean Girls” screenplay for the stage, so it’s probably sticking true to the original. Jeff Richmond, the Emmy-winning composer with TV credits like “30 Rock” and “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” under his belt (who’s also Fey’s husband), wrote the music, with lyrics by Tony Award nominee Nell Benjamin.

Tony Award winner Casey Nicholaw is directing and choreographing the show. Lorne Michaels is co-producing, because of course he is.

“Mean Girls” will premiere at the National Theatre in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 31, and travel to Broadway soon after. Our advice: Dress appropriately.

Emma Stone’s Most Magical Musical Moments

Is there anything that Emma Stone can’t do? She acts, she dances, and yes, she sings.

But even though everyone fell in love with her charming (and Golden Globe-nominated!) performance in La La Land, Stone has been showing off her musical chops for years, starting with her secret reality show past, to her stint on Broadway, to her performance as a Gaga-esque pop star in Popstar.

Warning: This may make you fall even more in love with her.

EASY A
Stone’s breakthrough leading role gave us a one-two punch of amazing musical performances: First, the hilariously goofy ode to Natasha Bedingfield’s iconic earworm, “Pocketful of Sunshine,” which basically confirmed that deep down, Stone is all of us. Bad shower dancing including.

And then there was the film’s climatic performance of “Knock On Wood,” where our adoration for her moved from “Oh my god, we’re basically the same person” to “We definitely want to be her when we grow up.” (And as a bonus for any Gossip Girl fans, this performance even had a shirtless, blue Penn Badgley, so it was basically unforgettable.)

THE “LES JEUNES DE PARIS” SKETCH ON SNLCan anyone make goofy dancing look as stylish and cool as Stone and Taran Killam? Frankly, we wouldn’t be surprised if her choreography in this sketch was one of the reasons that she got cast in La La Land.

POPSTAR: NEVER STOP NEVER STOPPINGIn a film filled with amazing, unexpected cameos, there was perhaps none as amazing and unexpected as Stone, who popped up to play pop superstar Claudia Cantrell, the avant-garde singer behind “Turn Up the Beef,” which led to Connor4Real’s (Andy Samberg) breakout “catchphrase verse.” Honestly, just watch the movie, and join us in hoping that she brings that blonde, double bun hairstyle to the red carpet.

CABARETStone won rave reviews for her Broadway debut, as Sally Bowles in the 2014 revival of Cabaret — and, after director Damien Chazelle took in a performance, won her the lead in La La Land — thanks to her gorgeous, bittersweet performance.

IN SEARCH OF THE PARTRIDGE FAMILYBack in 2004, VH1 launched a reality competition to cast for a reboot of the 1970s classic The Partridge Family and a then-brunette Emily Stone hit the stage week after week to ultimately win the role of Laura. Though the resulting pilot never aired, the experience did provide us with some truly incredible footage of a teenage stone singing Meredith Brook’s “Bitch” in some iconic early aughts low-rise jeans. And you know what? We’re into it.

HER LIP SYNC BATTLE ON THE TONIGHT SHOWBefore Lip Sync Battle became its own TV juggernaut, it was just a humble game that Jimmy Fallon would play with guests. Then Stone came on the show, and basically blew everyone else out of the water with her pitch-perfect, warp-speed performances of “All I Do Is Win” by DJ Khaled. They didn’t want her to crush it, but she did, because she has the keys.

SINGING “STOP” ON THE RADIO
Emma Stone singing the Spice Girls with Andrew Garfield is all we have ever wanted in this world. Anyone else need a tissue right now?

LA LA LAND
Every single time we watch this clip, we can feel our hearts grow three times their sizes, somewhere between Stone’s dramatic fake swoon over Gosling and when he starts tap dancing on the park bench. By the time the two of them properly kick their number into action, we’re pretty much the human embodiment of the heart-eyes emoji.

A sad song of musical censorship in India and Pakistan

2016-11-13-1479000952-9015798-image20161104253221vo4681.jpg

Laksmi Subramanian, Center for Studies in Social Sciences Calcutta

At the end of September 2016, the Indian motion picture producer’s association, India’s largest organisation related to entertainment, announced a ban on all Pakistani artists.

In retaliation, Pakistan authorities imposed a complete ban on airing Indian content on all its TV channels, including Bollywood movies.

This cultural war, triggered by the September Uri attacks in Kashmir, is far from new.

Indeed it is a sad reminder of last year, when the Indian ultra regionalist Maharashtrian-based party Shiv Sena threatened to disrupt a performance by celebrity singer Ghulam Ali in Mumbai, forcing the concert to be cancelled.

What are we to make of these episodes that occur now with depressing regularity, enjoy prime-time popularity on Indian television and then die down, only to be recalled when yet another event takes its place?

As with so many things, there is a historical explanation for the appropriation of music and performance practices as part of the nationalist project in both India and Pakistan.

As a historian, I have investigated the very complex and contested history that music in North India had with Partition – when India and Pakistan were divided in 1947. The artificial boundaries that nationalism constructed then are being reinforced to this day via these music disputes.

North Indian music mixes complex social worlds

Until 1947, music, or more specifically classical music, in North India belonged to a complex social universe. It was written and performed in princely establishments, courts and bourgeois public spheres in cities. It was present in both Hindu Vaishnav temples and Sufi Islamic silsilas – social circles that formed around specific teachers and followers, where music was an integral channel for experiencing mystic ecstasy.

From these cultural and social milieu sprung qawwali, a form of spiritual devotional music popular to this day across South Asia.

The late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (here in 1980) was a world renowned qawwali artist.

North Indian music flourished in the 17th and 18th centuries, in virtually all of Mughal North India, which extended from Gujarat in the west to Jaunpur and Benaras in the east (the current state of Uttar Pradesh); from the Punjab to the Mughal Deccan. It was part of a composite, Indo-Islamic culture, identified then as as “ganga jumni tehzib“.

The style incorporated acoustic elements from diverse sources and rested on a multi-lingual repertoire, conveying the simplicity of both Hindu bhakti and Islamic sufi poetry.

This poetry was inspired by popular devotional movements associated with Hinduism and Islam in the 15th century, which emphasised personal devotion and the value of a teacher. It commanded diverse genres that moved reasonably effortlessly between court and kotha: a space most commonly understood as brothel, but which was also part of the popular entertainment scene.

North Indian music also adapted musical instruments from South and Central Asia to produce new instruments such as the sitar and the sarod, and improvise with new conceptions of melody and vocalisation.

Ravi Shankar popularised the sitar in the West.
CC BY

This music was carefully nurtured by specialist families with access to a vast repertoire and a galaxy of brilliant teachers, finding support in small courts that persisted even after the Great Mutiny of 1857, when the Indian army revolted.

Following the mutiny, musical families were much reduced in power and stature, but found new enthusiasts among a growing middle-class gentry whose rise occurred in a new context of western education and colonial employment.

Music and modernity

The heightened middle-class appreciation of music was mediated through the experience of modernity, which inevitably fed new anxieties about inheritance, culture and heritage that had to be projected in a way that was appropriately modern, chaste and spiritual.

Umrao Jaan, was a famous singer-courtesan of the 18th century, immortalised by Bollywood actress Rekha in 1981.

Music, practised by courtesans and Muslim Ustads (teachers and masters), had to be reconciled with the new aspirations of a western-educated, middle-class Hindu society. They needed to repurpose this entertainment to suit a Hindu-accented concept of Indian-ness.

The resolution that unfolded was a series of experiments in the late 19th and early 20th century, including publishing primers on music and setting up music appreciation societies. These were initiated by nationalists and publicists such as Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande and Vishnu Digamber Paluskar.

A 1971 documentary on V.D Paluskar, considered a main influence in popularising Hindustani music.

The societies that we mention here were early expressions of a growing middle class interest in music and its reformers who ended up assuming responsibility for music’s teaching and transmission. They also brought existing practitioners such as Abdul Karim Khan into a new regime of aesthetic standardisation and institutional support.

Abdul Karim Khan (1871-1937) popularised and reformed the ‘kirana gharana’ style.

Ustads were persuaded to turn over their repertoire to be standardised and printed, while courtesans were marginalised in subtle and sometimes violent ways. Women were forced to give up their profession or move into new spaces afforded by the cinema, refashioning themselves in an appropriate manner as Jaddan Bai, the mother of legendary and pioneer Bollywood artist Nargis, did.

Jaddan Bai was the mother of Nargis, one of Bollywood’s first sweethearts.

Forced to choose sides

After Partition, these hereditary practitioners were asked for the first time to choose the country they would live in. It was only then that the music of the region began to bear the scars of a violent disruption and division.

What was to happen even to the naming of this practice – was it to be Hindustani classical music or ilm e mausiqi Pakistani? This was a question that cut right to the heart of the problem; a question that musicians on both sides of the divide agonised over even as they struggled to maintain claims to lineage and authenticity.

Artists moved across borders, confused by the way events transpired. Some found it easy to settle down and make a niche for themselves, such as singer Noor Jehan, who settled in Pakistan. Others found it difficult to juggle offers in India with stays in Pakistan.

Following Partition, Bade Ghulam Ali (1902-1968), the legendary singer from the Punjab and a doyen of the Patiala musical style, came back to India and was helped to acquire Indian citizenship by Morarji Desai, the chief Minister of Bombay in 1957.

Legendary singer Ghulam Ali faced a stark choice after Partition.

There was no doubt that the violence of displacement and the zeal of the new states to prove their fidelity to national identities represented a loss for performers. Listeners too were ultimately losers, even if the politics of representation and consumption numbed them to the fractures that music and performance practice had sustained.

The debate is not framed in the same way today, but it was certainly a pressing one when Pakistan opted for a different set of musical forms and cultural symbols to define its distinct heritage.

To this day, artists from Pakistan who sing classical music find receptive listeners in India and share the general feeling that politics has very little understanding of a deeper and shared aesthetic experience. Nasiruddin Sami, a Pakistani musician, has very close links to Delhi musical traditions and is very popular in the city.

This is certainly not to argue that both India and Pakistan did not nurture new creative artists or experiment fruitfully with genres such as the ghazal in Pakistan’s case, a poetic form that consists of rhyming couplets and that has enjoyed an immense resurgence.

The song ‘azadi’ (freedom) by sufi rock Pakistani band Junoon.

But we need to understand the shared nature of the subcontinent’s traditions, music perhaps being the most deeply felt. As Bade Ghulam Ali is supposed to have said:

If in every home one child was taught Hindustani classical music, this country would have never been partitioned.

Today, we live in a world that is saturated with sights and sounds that leak across borders, despite prohibitions and state posturings. In the digital age, bans make even less sense than older versions of censorship.

It appears mindless when governments speak of patriotism as some extreme form of clan loyalty, before which all sensibilities have to wither away.

Equally disquieting is that we, as consumers of infotainment, almost never seriously interrogate the banal but sinister intentions of government propaganda.

Sound Play: Video Games and the Musical Imagination

Sound Play: Video Games and the Musical Imagination

Video games open portals into fantastical worlds where imaginative play prevails. The virtual medium seemingly provides us with ample opportunities to behave and act out with relative safety and impunity. Or does it? Sound Play explores the aesthetic, ethical, and sociopolitical stakes of our engagements with gaming’s audio phenomena-from sonic violence to synthesized operas, from democratic music-making to vocal sexual harassment. Author William Cheng shows how the simulated environments of games empower designers, composers, players, and scholars to test and tinker with music, noise, speech, and silence in ways that might not be prudent or possible in the real world. In negotiating utopian and alarmist stereotypes of video games, Sound Play synthesizes insights from across musicology, sociology, anthropology, communications, literary theory, and philosophy. With case studies that span Final Fantasy VI, Silent Hill, Fallout 3, The Lord of the Rings Online, and Team Fortress 2, this book insists that what we do in there-in the safe, sound spaces of games-can ultimately teach us a great deal about who we are and what we value (musically, culturally, humanly) out here. Foreword by Richard Leppert Video Games Live cover image printed with permission from Tommy Tallarico

The Politics of the Fourth of July From Musical Theatre

2015-06-28-1435506582-3189850-1776three.jpg
As we approach the celebration of America’s 239th year of independence, Americans can learn about their revolutionary past from many sources, including an unexpected one: musical theatre.

The intersection between politics and musical theatre is small, indeed. One current anomaly is the hottest show in New York City, even though it does not open on Broadway until July 15. Hamilton, the creation of Lin-Manuel Miranda, opened to near-universal raves off-Broadway, and it relies on historian Ron Chernow’s important biography of Alexander Hamilton.

Some 46 years ago, another musical set in the eighteenth century opened to acclaim, capturing the Tony Award for best musical. Set primarily in Philadelphia’s Independence Hall, 1776 tells the story of the fateful weeks leading up to the writing and ratification of the Declaration of Independence by the Second Continental Congress. Given this thumbnail description, one might expect either a ponderous or puffed treatment of those tumultuous days.

Surprisingly, however, the show’s enduring popularity (it was also made into a film in 1972 with most of the original stage cast, including the estimable William Daniels in the starring role of John Adams) attests to the skill and dexterity of its authors. Yes, historical figures depicted on stage burst into song from time to time, and while that art form may turn aside some, those who accept the conceit — which is, after all, the conceit of all musical theatre — find real meat on the historical bones of this show.

(Disclaimer: I am both a political scientist who has written some on the founding period, and currently have a small role in Central New York’s Cortland Repertory Theatre company’s production of 1776. Fittingly, its final performance is July 4.)

The play’s representation of the central characters reflects their historical personas: for example, we learn at the outset that John Adams is “obnoxious and disliked,” as indeed he was. Maryland’s Samuel Chase was discourteously dubbed “bacon-face” by his congressional colleagues, owing to his girth and prodigious appetite. Rhode Island delegate Stephen Hopkins was a prodigious drinker, and so on.

Beyond this, however, the production includes extended discussions of the key issues at stake — many of which continue to bedevil the country today. Commander-in-Chief George Washington’s numerous gloomy dispatches about the abysmal condition of his military in the face of superior British forces were enough to “depress a hyena,” as Delaware’s Thomas McKean lamented. When Adams wails at the top of the show, “By God I have had this Congress!” it could just as easily be Barack Obama speaking in 2015.

During a scene when Declaration chief author Thomas Jefferson is defending the document to skeptical Pennsylvania delegate John Dickinson, who asserts that America lacks the right to rebel, Jefferson counters by citing British political thinker John Locke’s contract theory of governance (whose writing profoundly influenced Jefferson): “When a king becomes a tyrant he thereby breaks the contract binding his subjects to him.”

Income inequality and the privilege of wealth inflame passions when Dickinson defends the influence of wealthy elites in a nation of relative poverty. Congress’s President John Hancock notes that the body’s conservatives are unlikely to marshal much support in the country because “there are not enough men of property in America to dictate policy.” “Perhaps not,” Dickinson retorts, “but don’t forget that most men with nothing would rather protect the possibility of becoming rich than face the reality of being poor. And that is why they will follow us.” Koch brothers, anyone?

States’ rights and the relative balance of state versus national power sparks an exchange between delegates when South Carolina’s Edward Rutledge asks John Adams what the goal is beyond achieving independence. “We intend to become one nation,” Adams replies, to which Rutledge expresses his preference for “a nation of sovereign states, united for our mutual protection, but separate for our individual pursuits.” Preference for a weak national government finds expression in the nation’s first constitution, the Articles of Confederation (1777). Yet that document’s manifest weaknesses lead to its eclipse by the document of 1787, that far exceeded Rutledge’s call for a limited national government. Last week’s historic Supreme Court rulings on the Affordable Care Act and same sex marriage are but the most recent examples of the continuing struggle over federal versus state power.

Most centrally, the debate over the Declaration’s wording leads to the climactic moment in the show when the southern delegates walk out in protest of wording in the document condemning slavery. That near-rupture was staved off by the wording’s excision. Obviously, slavery would continue to cast its shadow over the country until the bloody Civil War finally ended the practice. As we know today, of course, it hardly ended the pall of fractured race relations which continue to rile our politics.

Finally, musical theatre is a distinctly American phenomenon. The mix of drama, historical text, humor and stirring music in 1776 gives a life to our past in a way that the likes of Ben Franklin might have appreciated, if not enjoyed.

‘Cosmic Consultants’ Starsky + Cox Hit New York With Musical Show For Summer Solstice

The world’s “psychics to the stars” will take to the New York stage just in time for the summer solstice.

Real-life married couple Stella Starsky and Quinn Cox, known internationally as Starsky + Cox, put a comic (and musical) twist on the age-old art of astrology in “Starring: A Midsummer’s Evening of Entertaining Enlightenment,” which hits Joe’s Pub at New York’s Public Theater on June 21. The pair, who you may recognize from their appearances on “Chelsea Lately,” VH1 and MTV, promise the new show will “seamlessly marry the high and low, the esoteric and the pop, the sexy and sublime, the cosmic and the comic.”

The Huffington Post spoke with Starsky + Cox, who are the authors of the beloved best-seller, Sextrology, via email about the new show, how gender and sexuality play into astrology and whether or not star signs can really impact romantic compatibility.

What surprises can we expect from your show, “Starring”?
Well we suppose it’s a surprise in itself that you can catch a couple of cosmic comics with a metaphysical music act performing live at Joe’s Pub, although we have done so for over five years. But people are probably most amazed by the audience interaction. Total strangers will have sent us their birth stats and we read their astrological charts live on the spot. They might expect us to poke fun, improvising with them, but what is most stupifying is how freakily accurate we can be. It’s not a Starsky + Cox show unless we see some shock beneath the laughter. And of course our sketches and patter strike chords of truthiness even if they seem to come from outer space. People find it surprising that they can belly laugh at jokes about high-minded subjects like mythology or the multiverse.

How do gender and sexuality play into astrology? How would, for example, a gay man’s astrological chart differ from that of a straight person who is born on the same day?

It’s all about archetype. The whole premise of our book Sextrology which is subtitled The Astrology of Sex and the Sexes is foremost about gender and sexuality. A person born on the same day in the same place at the same exact time will have the same chart as you do. And they will inherit the same archetypal ingredients. However, there is a spectrum, a paradoxical nature, to every placement of a planet in a sign in an astrological house in a person’s chart. (Think of twins. They can have an almost exact birth chart, but they tend to gravitate to different polarities within their astrological make-up, to express their individuality, in relief. Still, there are so many examples of twins who were separated at birth leading lives, down to the most minute detail, that are similar.)

In general terms of sun-sign astrology there are a number of archetypes assigned to each of the signs In our book Sextrology separate male signs from female signs into 24 instead of the traditional 12. But within, say, the male sign of Sagittarius, there are a number of archetypes on which that individual might draw, in sweeping terms. And we start with the classic archetypes, those of the gods and demigods, who are really just personifications of energy, characters that echo through fairytales and literature, film and drama, television and comic books, and whose energy we, as living-breathing people also take on. Of course, sitting with a client and looking at their individual chart we can go infinitely deeper in the exploration of their individual selves.

I hear so much talk of not signing contracts, etc. during mercury retrograde, for example. How much would you say that a person should (or shouldn’t) rely on astrology when making major life decisions?
In our private consultancy, we never tell a client they should or should not do a particular thing. We explore the landscape of potentiality available to them at any given time, to help them make informed decisions with eyes wide open.

That said, this last Mercury retrograde that ended last week was a total ass kicker and we were pretty verbal about letting things wait that could wait. Not because the outcome would be unfavorable—Mercury doesn’t have much control over that—but, named for the trickster god, that planet can mess with our heads in the process, throwing monkey wrenches in our path. But even so: the effects of Mercury are designed to keep our minds sharp, while making us more flexible and versatile in our approach to circumstance. Tough love from a tiny planet.

Astrological compatibility between partners — important, or no? Is this any more or less significant in same-sex relationships? Can a couple who are astrologically opposed somehow make it work?
Without zeroing in on the specific charts of two actual individuals who are in an intimate relationship, and just speaking, as we do in our books, in general terms of sun-sign astrology, there are still some pretty specific peaks and valleys endemic to a certain relationship between sex signs. This was the premise of our second book, Cosmic Coupling, to which, much to our chagrin, our publisher would only dedicate a single page to same sex relationships, whilst straight relationships were given full spreads. No pun intended. (The limiting and omitting of gay content in our books has seen us pull it from markets like Russia and has informed our choices, moving forward, in the traditional publishing world.)

But to answer your question: Every relationship can work. Different signs tend to access or spotlight different parts of our own personalities, in broad terms, and the emphasis of the relationship will vary, depending on the sign combination. We tend to play different roles in relationship with different signs. And just as we might find ourselves being attracted to a person of a particular sign, time and again, or they to us, we are often quite aware which relationships are sustainable or combustible as the case may be.

How would an astrological chart differ for a transgender person as opposed to gay or straight?
Again the chart doesn’t change and we think the question you’re asking is: can it be that a straight person and a gay person and a transgender person all born in exactly the same place at the exact instant have the same chart — which they do — and the answer would be yes. The zodiac is a pretty amazing, age-old, timeless mandala for existence. And it has always seemed to know things that we modern folk only then “discover” via math or the sciences, in time.

The astrological system sees sexuality and gender as being far more fluid than our overly categorial minds will often allow. What qualities of self that the straight, gay or transgender individual born at precisely the same time in the same place actually do share will be far more astounding than how they identify in regard to gender or sexuality. They can have all the same cosmic ingredients but embody a different recipe.

Also, in regard to transgender individuals: We find it more apt to discuss them in terms of gender, not in terms of sexuality. Just as we maintain that men and women (who identify as such) are different archetypes, one from another, so too are transgender people of a particular sign; but we’ve yet been able to express that in book form. [Put a pin] in that because doing so is part of our plan.

Musically, what can we expect from the new show?
Music has always been the icing for us. That said, we have gone further with it. Matt Ray has been our musical director now for the last five years an he’s the best in the business. We choose songs that tell a story and fit the theme of the show without hitting people over the head with them. We have individually found our own voices and have performed, more, separately in recent years—Stella Starsky’s solo show “Birth of the American Baroness” will be at Joe’s Pub on July 23 — and choosing songs to do together is always easy and fun. You might hear anything from X (the band) to Blossom Dearie in this show. And Patrick Johnson will be joining us along with special guest Phoebe Legere.

“Starring: A Midsummer’s Evening of Entertaining Enlightenment” hits Joe’s Pub at New York’s Public Theater on June 21. Head here for more details.

‘Gilmore Girls’ Creator Amy Sherman-Palladino Is Working On A Musical

Attention Stars Hollow: “Gilmore Girls” creator Amy Sherman-Palladino has announced that she is working on a musical and a show for Amazon.

“I’m writing the book to a musical right now,” Amy Sherman-Palladino told moderator Danielle Nussbaum during her ATX panel on Saturday morning. “It just happened.”

She didn’t provide many details, only telling the crowd that it’s “based on a movie nobody would have seen.”

“I’m just going to say it’s original,” she said, stopping herself from revealing to much. “It’s original. Fuck it.”

She also (fleetingly) mentioned that she is working a new show. Since her run “Bunheads” like “Gimore Girls” ended abruptly and far too soon, getting more TV form Sherman-Palladino is great thing.

“I’m working on a pilot for the delightful Amazon company,” she said, before launching into a story about getting caught in the door on her way into their offices. “That’s what I’m working on right now.”

Coldplay Wrote A ‘Game Of Thrones’ Musical For Red Nose Day

Ever wonder what a “Game of Thrones” musical would sound like? Now you don’t have to, thanks to Coldplay.

Chris Martin and the rest of his bandmates penned a “GoT” musical sketch in support of NBC’s Red Nose Day, “a campaign dedicated to raising money for children and young people living in poverty.” The network teased the sketch, which will air on Thursday, with two clips. The first features Peter Dinklage singing as Tyrion about all the deaths in the HBO series:

The second has a more Coldplay-esque mellow tempo with Nikolaj Coster-Waldau singing as Jaime asking Cersei to lend him a hand (ha ha):

The collaboration between Coldplay and the HBO show is not much of a surprise. Fans will remember that the band’s drummer Will Champion had a cameo in the Red Wedding episode. Now perhaps Tyrion and Jorah will sing some Westerosi tunes this season.

“Game of Thrones” airs on Sundays at 9:00 p.m. ET on HBO.

From Musical Theater to Miranda Lambert’s Opening Act: Courtney Cole’s Country Music Journey with #NoFilter

2015-05-18-1431974967-6389180-CCbluecrop2.jpg

Courtney Cole’s first time singing in front of an audience was almost her last. The wide-eyed eleven-year-old spent weeks preparing to sing in front of her Louisiana church for the first time. She was so confident in her preparation and eager to make her debut that right before she went onstage, she asked her piano accompanist to forego the song’s introduction.

“It was a disaster,” Cole recalls. “I started singing in the wrong key. I knew it right away, but I couldn’t figure out how to switch when the piano came in. I barely finished, and then I immediately went to the bathroom and cried my eyes out. I told my mom I would never, ever sing again.”

Despite the traumatic experience, Cole’s fifth-grade resilience kicked in and she was singing in church again a couple of weeks later. Church performances soon turned into musical theater, which led Cole to attend the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts near her hometown of Mandeville, Louisiana, as a high schooler.

“I’ve always loved to perform and feel so at home on stage,” Cole says. “I know this sounds so generic, but I love Wicked. My family names all of our animals after Wicked; my mom had a fish named Glinda, and her dog’s name is Elphaba. There’s a spell that Elphaba says in the play, ‘Eleka nahmen nahmen ah tum ah tum eleka nahmen,’ and that’s my dog’s name. I call her Ellie for short. Now I just need a boy dog to name Fiyero!”

Musical theater came so naturally for Cole that she almost pursued the passion after high school until a conversation with her church’s worship pastor helped change her course. “I had a scholarship to go to school in Alabama for musical theater,” she says. “My worship pastor said, ‘You don’t need to go do that that. You need to do your ultimate dream, which is touring and being onstage and singing music that you’ve written.'”

Inspired by the conversation, Cole applied to Belmont University in Nashville. “I got in at the last audition they had for the year and moved to Nashville, and I’ve been here ever since.”

2015-05-18-1431978575-8106807-IMG_4781.JPG

“I majored in commercial voice,” Cole says. “Thank God that’s a major! What else would I have majored in? Accounting? I couldn’t!” she adds with a laugh. “Music is the only thing I’m good at. There’s nothing else I would want to do. I respect and appreciate the people who do the business side of [music] so much because it’s just so hard. I did it for a while, and I couldn’t even think. It just wasn’t me.”

Cole calls her journey “your typical Nashville story.” She explains, “I worked my way up. After I graduated, I got an internship at a publishing company…from a guy I met on MySpace, actually,” the singer adds. “I worked there doing a bunch of odd jobs. I would work from 9 – 5, then sing and write from 6 – 10, because that’s what I ultimately wanted to do. The company executives saw what I was doing and decided to give me a publishing deal! That’s where my journey as a professional songwriter and artist really began. I’ve been refining my writing and crafting my sound over the last couple of years, and here I am now. “

Here is a place Cole describes as “exactly where I’ve always dreamed I would be.” She has a new music video, “Drunk,” which is making waves on CMT and GAC. Her Spotify-exclusive acoustic EP, #NoFilter, has been received well by fans and critics alike, and she’ll join one of her country idols, Miranda Lambert, on an all-female country tour this fall.

“Making the video for ‘Drunk’ was one of the best experiences of my life,” Cole gushes. “When we were finished, I looked at my manager and said, ‘Can we do that again?’ It was just a really fun day. It brought in the music side and my theater side.”

The video was shot in Nashville, but Cole infused elements of New Orleans as a tribute to a town that she says has been a constant inspiration. “Personality-wise, music-wise, color-wise, it’s just so inspiring,” she says. “That’s all the stuff I want to bring out in my music. We couldn’t film in New Orleans because Mardi Gras was going on, so we decided to bring Mardi Gras to Nashville! If you look closely, you can see fleurs-de-lis in a few places in the video.”

2015-05-18-1431975004-2921404-IMG_5144crop.jpg

The song “Drunk” was the product of a writer’s retreat between Cole and co-writers Catt Gravitt, Gerald O’Brien, and Shirazi.”We wrote five songs that trip, but we knew right away there was something really special about ‘Drunk,'” Cole says. “What you hear on Spotify is actually the acoustic work tape that we did in the cabin that day. I knew it would make the perfect first single and be a great stepping stone for the album.” (Fans can find the fully-produced version of “Drunk” on iTunes.)

Cole’s Spotify-exclusive debut also includes the beautiful ballad “Fall Like Rain,” which provides a great balance to the fun, upbeat “Drunk” and “Can’t Buy Love.” The inspirational “Cool Girl” finishes out the four-song collection, making it a very strong showing for the Louisiana native, who is road-tested, to say the least.

She has played hundreds of shows supporting acts including Chris Young, Thompson Square, and Kip Moore. But she shows she’s most excited about are yet to come. This fall, she will join one of her country-music heroes, Miranda Lambert, on a resurrection of Lambert’s Roadside Bars and Pink Guitars Tour at venues across the country. The all-female lineup includes Lambert, Cole, “God Made Girls” singer RaeLynn, Lambert’s Pistol Annies partner-in-crime Ashley Monroe, and up-and-coming country artist Clare Dunn.

“I’m so excited for the tour. It feels so surreal,” Cole says. “Miranda’s music changed songwriting for me. She changed the way that I view music in general, and writing from a personal standpoint. Her writing helped me get down to the truth of who I am as a writer and find what I want to say to the world, and it just made me want to be better.”

2015-05-18-1431975186-6477429-PinkGuitars_2015_POSTER_GENERIC.jpeg

Although landing the tour with Miranda is a dream come true for the young artist, she’s quick to note that there are many dreams left to achieve. And the best way to make those dreams come true? Believe in them, she says.

“If I could sum up my story in one sentence, it would be that dreams really do come true, and with a little hard work and staying positive, you can make anything happen,” she says with conviction. “Your thoughts really do become your life. When I was a little girl, I would sit in my room and pretend like I was on tour. I would see the arena in my head. And the fact that I’m here now, and get to go out and play my music live on the road, it’s amazing! But I knew that was going to happen from the time I was a little girl, because I believed it.”

Country fans had better believe they’ll be hearing a LOT from Courtney Cole in the future. Between now and the kickoff of the Roadside Bars and Pink Guitars Tour in September, country fans can enjoy her acoustic EP, #NoFilter, exclusively on Spotify. Deborah Cox Describes ‘The Bodyguard’ Musical Role As A ‘Dream Of A Lifetime’

The musical theatre adaptation of Lawrence Kasdan’s 1992 Oscar-nominated film, “The Bodyguard” will make its North American debut with its Fall 2016 national tour.

The award-winning musical, which premiered at London’s Adelphi Theatre in Dec. 2012, will star Grammy Award-nominated singer-songwriter Deborah Cox as Rachel Marron (previously played by X-Factor winner Alexandra Burke) and directed by British theatre director Thea Sharrock.

Cox is keeping busy this summer. In addition to the announcement of her new musical gig, she is prepping the Summer release of her forthcoming album “Work Of Art,” and currently stars in a musical based on of the life of Josephine Baker. Cox will also co-host the Clear Channel Spectacolor’s simulcast of the 2015 Tony Awards on June 7.

In an exclusive statement to The Huffington Post, the multi-talented Canadian native says she is excited about her involvement in all three projects.

“I am honored to be chosen to co-host and perform with Justin Guarini for The Tony Awards in Times Square simulcast event,” she wrote.

“I am also honored to represent two of the most iconic and historic women of the 20th century with the Broadway bound ‘Josephine’ project and now the ‘Bodyguard.’ As a performing artist, it’s a dream of a lifetime to now have an opportunity to not only sing, but to also feature my acting and dancing talents. What a blessing!”

Additional casting and tour cities for “The Bodyguard” will be announced at a later date.

Adapted and seamlessly directed by Lucia Cox from the novel by Anthony Burgess, of A Clockwork Orange fame, it kicks off the Brits Off-Broadway fest. Howard (Oliver Devoti) and Janet (Eve Burley) Shirley live a provincial existence. She works at a local supermarket and waxes rhapsodic over baked beans and toast; Howard, a used car salesman, is as negative as his wife is positive: “What are we, really? We don’t have much to give the world.”

Howard thinks it’s a wicked world, plagued by rampant consumerism and the threat of nuclear war. His one desire — to live like a millionaire for a month, then “to snuff it” — is admittedly novel. So is his tactic to secure a victory over circumstances. He decides to go on a quiz show, armed with a photographic mind and a relentless determination to win.

The fun is taking the journey with these two quirky people, the disciplined, exacting Howard, who, in Oliver Devoti’s hands is beautifully modulated and recognizable as a man painfully aware of his limitations. Similarly, Eve Burley is excellent as Janet, a simple, friendly woman who takes comfort in the ordinary, but yearns, however quietly, for something more. Plus, Meriel Pym’s set and costumes are spot-on.

A searing look at the changing mores of the ’60s, juxtaposed with the peppy black-and-white ads that run during the show. Advertising’s vapidness mirrors a post-war Britain aping American consumption. What happened, Howard muses, to the gravitas of earlier times?

At 80 minutes without an intermission, One Hand Clapping is an intimate, riveting ride. In this tiny theater, big things happen.

Crosstown, a larger off-Broadway venue takes on politics, always fertile ground for satire — and the Clinton years, with sex, scandal and Republican skullduggery, offered it up in buckets. So it’s probably no surprise that Clinton the Musical, now off-Broadway at New World Stages, has landed at the same time Hillary is running for president. 2015-05-16-1431805125-2264057-HuffPoClinton.jpg

It begins in 1993, when President Bill Clinton (Tom Galantich) takes office. He’s young, charismatic and Democratic, to the horror of GOP leaders, the food-obsessed Newt Gingrich (John Treacy Egan) and a gay, leather-loving Kenneth Starr (a joyously over-the-top Kevin Zak). They plot to unseat the new president by whatever means necessary — even if it means digging deeply into his Arkansas past and disrupting much need health-care reform.

What’s good public policy next to the obsession with power?

While the Republicans come in for their just slams, in a script that follows the roller-coaster ride that was Clinton’s impeachment, it also posits two Bills: WJ, the caring, responsible one, and Billy, the wild, womanizing playboy (Duke Lafoon). Only one person, an uber-ambitious Hillary (Kerry Butler) sees them both — at the same time!

And there in lies the conundrum of the Clinton years. Throw in a crazed Linda Tripp (Judy Gold) and a saucy Monica Lewinsky (a terrific Veronica J. Kuehn), and the fast-paced, over-the-top parody is complete. Paul Hodge’s score zings everyone, from the scandal-loving, fact-ignoring press to the right-wing conspiracy determined to take the president down at any cost.

One quibble: It’s too heavy-handed when driving home Hillary’s presidential ambitions. Men strive for the presidency with ferocity — and if you’re last name is Bush, blatant entitlement. Why not women?

Dan Knechtges’s direction is zippy and fun and his cast delivers. For political junkies, Clinton the Musical delivers all the wacky elements of power politics in red, white and blue.

Sheryl Crow’s Winding Musical Road

Last week I stumbled upon Variety‘s positive review of Diner, a musical running for a limited time at Arlington’s Signature Theater. The production, based on Barry Levinson’s 1982 film, Diner, teamed Levinson up with Sheryl Crow. For the first time, Crow has scored a musical, and the result is a sold-out show for seven weeks. As I read the review, I battled conflicting emotions: happy for the play’s positive reception and angry that I wasn’t on the East Coast to see it — disappointed that I’d miss this latest turn in Sheryl Crow’s refreshingly unpredictable and musically liberated career.

Sometime during the fall of 1993, I was driving home from middle school with my mom listening to WNEW, New York City’s now-defunct legendary rock ‘n’ roll radio station. At the time, it played mostly classic rock standards, but on rare occasions a contemporary artist would slip through into rotation. These were still the days when DJs could handpick songs for their shifts and, if a new artist filtered into sets of Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones or Eric Clapton, listeners noticed. I was sitting in the front seat of the car and had already begun flipping through my math homework when I heard Scott Muni’s gravely voice interrupt his daily 3 p.m. block of afternoon music. “This is the first time we’re playing this here on WNEW,” he began. I could hear him fumbling with the plastic CD case and flipping through the liner notes to read from the track listing. “She’s Sheryl Crow, a singer from California, and this is her single, ‘Leaving Las Vegas.'”

The drums started, a simple beat amid handclaps. But when Sheryl Crow started to sing, the crackling rawness of her voice broke the song open and out poured a barely optimistic tale of a woman whose desperation to leave one life behind allowed for splinters of hope to start anew. It was a mesmerizing sound, a captivating tale — and something that filled a critical void in contemporary music. By the early-1990s, I was conveniently flopping between two musical landscapes: grunge had exploded and permeated my school hallways, but having Baby Boomer parents, I also grew up on the musical greats of the 1960s and 1970s. When I heard “Leaving Las Vegas” for the first time, it was as if these two musical eras had collapsed into one.

A month later, when I bought Tuesday Night Music Club at the local record store, I felt as though I had finally found my music. The album was a whirlwind to listen to — a fluid trip through sounds and emotions that had the lyrical angst of the mid-1990s Gen X culture, but the music of a modern-day Big Pink. “The Na Na Song” spit out a force of cosmic-manic energy that somehow balanced “I Shall Believe” with enough poignancy to close the record with a pleading hymnal beyond just a gentle ballad. I’d listen for hours, painting pictures in my imagination of the characters in those songs. I promised myself that when I got older, I would travel through life to find my own set of characters — to grasp the excitement and adventure that Tuesday Night Music Club awakened in me.

For the next 20 years, Sheryl Crow’s music played against the background of my life, becoming a steady companion through adolescence and into adulthood. There was the summer after high school graduation when my friends and I sang along to “Everyday Is a Winding Road” as we whipped our cars around deserted country roads into the early morning hours. Or the night of September 11, 2001 when I left a candlelight vigil and cried in my car listening to “Riverwide” in the parking lot, too upset to drive. Or those endless months of 14-hour workdays when I walked home from the subway on cold, snowy Brooklyn nights listening to “There Goes the Neighborhood.” Or the day that I moved to Los Angeles and played “Long Road Home” while I carried boxes into a new apartment in a new city. Every album was like a new book with each song telling a unique story of a specific time and place — sometimes through the linear reality of everyday life and others through an existential journey of amorphous self-realization.

I thought about these memories as I learned more about Diner and read about the “delicious harmonies… enhanced by insightful lyrics” that Crow had written for the 1950’s rock musical. I wondered how, in this post-MTV age where it is rare for musicians to maintain careers beyond a flash of massive popularity, Sheryl Crow has navigated decades-long relevance within a swiftly changing musical and cultural landscape.

Sure, there’s the versatility of her songwriting — and years of touring and promotions. But, there is also a willingness to stray from any singular musical path that audiences have come to expect from Sheryl Crow. This freedom to take risks — to release a contemporary country album on the heels of a Memphis R&B soul album, to duet with Pavarotti, Loretta Lynn and Kid Rock — has led to one of the more winding musical paths of any singer-songwriter in the past 20 years. And somewhere along the way, audiences began to invest in the mystery of what twist may come next, because what is playing in a diner in Arlington today could become a new masterpiece tomorrow.

Diner will be playing at the Signature Theater in Arlington, VA until January 25, 2015.

‘Duck Dynasty’ Musical Headed For Las Vegas Stage

Duck Dynasty” is making the leap from the small screen to the stage, with reports that a musical based on the controversial family is headed to Las Vegas.

The musical, from the production company behind “Jersey Boys,” will be a semi-biographical show based on Willie and Korie Robertson’s book, “The Duck Commander Family: How Faith, Family, and Ducks Built a Dynasty,” The Hollywood Reporter said.

The show will not star the Robertson family, but instead feature actors playing members of the family, the website reported.

The New York Times says the 90-minute, 14-song show will likely open in February at The Rio, which is currently home to Penn & Teller’s live show as well as a Chippendales performance.

I think the expectation is that it’ll be all chicken-pickin’ stuff and banjos, but what we’re trying to do is pull out as much heart, humor and sincerity as we can to keep people surprised,” Steven Morris, one of the show’s composers, told the newspaper.

The Times also reports that anti-gay remarks from family patriarch Phil Robertson will be addressed in the show.

In an interview with GQ last year, Phil Robertson compared homosexuality to bestiality and said African-Americans were happy before the civil rights era.

Robertson later issued an apology, but has continued to make controversial remarks. In June, he claimed he was “trying to help those poor souls and turn them to Jesus” and in September said he’s as much of a homophobe as Jesus. He has also claimed that AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are God’s “penalty” for immoral conduct.

“The Robertsons are so unusual, their story so juicy, and theater shouldn’t be limited to telling stories about people you resemble or revere,” producer Michael David, who said he was personally offended by the comments, told the Times.

Season 7 of “Duck Dynasty” premieres next week on A&E.
