Montblanc Names Fan Bing Bing as Global Ambassador

NUMBER ONE FAN: Montblanc has a new global face in the way of Chinese actress and red carpet darling Fan Bing Bing.
Following the launch of her own cosmetics line, Fan Beauty, in March, the “I Am Not Madame Bovary” and “X-Men” franchise star is now fronting the German high-end accessories brand.
“Fan Bingbing is the quintessential modern woman, portraying confidence in different areas beyond acting. Her interest and knowledge comprises fashion, philanthropy and business,” said Montblanc chief executive officer Nicolas Baretzki. “This self-confidence, determination and independence are what define the ‘boheme spirit’ and we are delighted to welcome Fan Bingbing to the Montblanc family.”
The contract is another addition to her already lucrative career. Fan has been China’s best paid celebrity for four years running now, according to Forbes, with her 2017 income estimated at 300 million renminbi, or $ 47.5 million at current exchange.
Fan has worked with international houses like Chopard and L’Oréal in the past. In 2016, she and her boyfriend Li Chen fronted fast fashion chain H&M’s Chinese New Year campaign. The two are now engaged after Li proposed last September, footage of which was shared on social media.

EXCLUSIVE: Cartier Names Annabelle Wallis the New Face of Panthère de Cartier

Cartier is again teaming up with Hollywood and adding Annabelle Wallis to the fold as the new face of its Panthère de Cartier, WWD has learned.
The multilingual British actress who starred in “Peaky Blinders,” “The Mummy,” “The Tudors” and “The Man Who Would Be Bond” is being tapped as a brand ambassador.
“Behind her luminous complexion, blue eyes and gentle manner, the Maison discovered a great strength of character, a fearless spirit and a hunger for self-expression: the soul of a panther, driven and determined to turn convention on its head and get her teeth into something. Annabelle Wallis embodies the Panthère woman,” Cartier said in a statement.
The confirmation of Wallis is a continuation of a new advertising direction for the fine jewelry brand, which recently revealed Jake Gyllenhaal as the face of the Santos de Cartier collection.
The Cartier Panthère jewelry motif originated  in 1914, with the Panthère de Cartier watch launched in the Eighties and is a staple in the Cartier watch collection alongside the Tank, Santos de Cartier and Ballon Bleu De Cartier.

Dior Homme Names Yoon Ahn Jewelry Designer

TWO’S COMPANY: Kim Jones will be in good company in his new role as artistic director of Dior Homme, which has appointed Yoon Ahn, a member of the designer’s inner circle, as the brand’s jewelry designer, according to an Instagram post.
Jones took to the platform on Thursday to welcome Ahn – known as Yoon – on her first day at work in Paris.

A Dior Homme spokesperson could not be reached for comment at press time.
Ahn at Jones’ final men’s show for Louis Vuitton in January hinted to WWD that a big project was in the works. She was dressed in a women’s runway look from the show in a print based on an aerial view of Kenya.
Tokyo-based Ahn and her partner Verbal, a celebrated rapper in Japan and former member of M-flo, the Nineties hip-hop group, are super-connected in the fashion industry. The power couple, which has its own streetwear brand Ambush that figured among the finalists of the 2017 LVMH Prize, has appeared in campaigns for Louis Vuitton and Dr. Martens. They’ve also collaborated with brands including Colette, Sacai and A Bathing Ape. Ahn starred in A$ AP Rocky’s video “L$ D,” as well.

H&M Names Five Winners of Global Change Award

PARIS — Hennes & Mauritz AB named the five winners of its Global Change Award, and asked the public to vote online for one of them to help split the 1 million euro prize.
The fashion industry, including fast-fashion groups that offer inexpensive clothing at cut-throat prices, is under pressure to rein in waste as public awareness of environmental issues gains ground.
Winners were: Crop-A-Porter, which makes textile from food crop harvest leftovers; Algae Apparel, which uses algae as a dye; Smart Stitch, which makes dissolvable thread; The Regenerator, which separates cotton and polyester blends for recycling, and Fungi Fashion, which makes clothes from decomposing mushroom roots.
“All industries need to re-think, innovate and challenge status quo,” said H&M chief executive officer and board member Karl-Johan Persson.
The company noted that applicants offered a broad range of ideas, but that most of the solutions came from outside the fashion industry.
“This year’s Global Change Award winners are about disrupting business-as-usual to help transition us to a low-carbon and circular economy,” noted Vikram Widge, who heads climate finance and policy for the International Finance Corporation, and was a member of the award’s jury.
The winner of the public vote in the competition, now in its third year, will

Danish Jeweler Monies Names CEO, Adds Paris Store

NEW ROOTS: Signaling its aim to expand, Danish jewelry brand Monies has named Anne Christine Persson as chief executive officer and is opening a Paris store with a Palais Royal address, the company said on Tuesday.
The label, known for chunky, handmade necklaces made out of petrified wood, cowbone and shells, said Persson will manage and develop the company’s business in Denmark and abroad, also handling its strategy for the future. The executive, who takes her position in April, worked at the Danish Fashion Institute and was involved in Copenhagen’s fashion week.
Founded in 1973 by goldsmiths Gerda and Nikolai Monies, the jeweler has a workshop in Copenhagen.
The new Palais Royal location will place Monies alongside brands including Stella McCartney and Acne Studios. The store stretches over 1,000 square feet on two floors, serving as a showroom for the jewelry and a place for events and exhibits as well, the founders said, noting that Paris has always been an important place for the label to meet both private and wholesale customers.

Courrèges Names Yolanda Zobel Artistic Director

PARIS – Joining the ranks of European brands taking a chance on a studio talent, Courrèges on Wednesday named Yolanda Zobel artistic director of the house, effective Feb. 26.
The announcement came some seven months after the French fashion label parted ways with design duo Sébastien Meyer and Arnaud Vaillant, who were with Courrèges for two years. They were the first official designers at the helm of the brand since Space Age designer André Courrèges and his wife and creative partner Coqueline sold the company in 2011.
Despite getting off to a promising start, the modern, retro-futurist, conceptual vision of the creative pair – from smart designs focused on core Courrèges essentials to presentations on giant video screens and advertising campaigns based on patterns of signature garments – failed to translate into sales for the label.
Courrèges is now owned by former advertising executives Jacques Bungert and Frédéric Torloting, and a 40 percent stake is held by Artémis SA, the family holding company of French billionaire François Pinault.
François-Henri Pinault, his son and Kering chairman and chief executive officer, in a briefing with reporters after the company reported full-year results on Tuesday, described Courrèges as struggling. “The brand is undergoing a restructuring,” said Pinault, speaking in his

New Names, Resort-Focus Energize Australian Fashion Week

SYDNEY — New names, Liberty print swimwear and unisex surfwear were among the biggest buyer takeaways from Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia.
Now in its 22nd year, the annual event pushed dates back several weeks to rebrand itself from a spring to resort showcase last year, resulting in a 75 percent increase in international buyer attendance over 2015, according to organizer IMG.
The company said it expects this year’s eight-day event, which concluded Sunday with a weekend of ticketed consumer presentations of the week’s highlights, to have drawn a cumulative attendance of 30,000.
Among them were a contingent of 33 international delegates, including 23 buyers — a number on par with 2016 — from New York, London, Paris, Singapore, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Dubai. Airfares and accommodation were covered by the event.
More than 80 brands from Australia, New Zealand and China were showcased in 42 solo and group runway shows and a new IMG-operated “Designer Suites” showroom located at the event’s central hub for five years, Redfern’s Carriageworks.
Buyers praised the number of collections on offer, the event’s friendly vibe, good organization and the picturesque off-site locations that anchored the event in Sydney.

12 Celebrity Baby Names That Are Actually Quite Nice

Nameberry is honoring the veteran celebrity moms ― the ones who have gracefully combined high-profile careers with parenting and added another baby to the mix since last May.

These stylish mamas have chosen a mix of traditional and surprising names for their new additions. Plenty of these could prove influential in the upcoming years. What are your favorites? From Amalia to Zen, there’s something here to suit every style.

Amalia

Natalie Portman made headlines when she named her firstborn Aleph in 2011. Aleph is the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet. Recently she and husband Benjamin Millepied added a daughter to their family. Amalia is a slightly more conventional choice, but sticks with the A theme. With Amelia near the top of the popularity lists, cousin Amalia promises to inspire.

Caleb

Kerry Washington has stuck with a winning strategy for naming her two children with husband Nnamdi Asomugha. New baby Caleb Kelechi joined big sister Isabelle Amarachi last October. Both first names are mainstream favorites, but the “Scandal” star and her NFL husband chose middles that honor his Nigerian heritage.

Daisy

Olivia Wilde impressed us all when she and husband Jason Sudeikis named their son Otis Alexander. They did it again, with daughter Daisy Josephine’s name in October. The first names are vintage and nickname-proof, while the middles feel longer and slightly more traditional. Otis re-entered the U.S. Top 1000 following his birth announcement; Daisy already ranks in the Top 200, but might also get a boost.

Dimitri

After Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher named their daughter Wyatt Isabelle, we knew their son’s name would be equally unexpected. Sure enough, the couple went with Dimitri Portwood for their November 2016 new arrival. Ashton has shared that Mila suggested the name, but not explained why. Since Mila was born in the Ukraine, it feels like a great heritage choice for the couple.

Hugo

Ginnifer Goodwin and Josh Dallas might be the best boy namers of our time. Firstborn son Oliver Finlay arrived in 2014. The “Once Upon a Time” stars added son Hugo Wilson in June 2016. Oliver has raced up the popularity charts in recent years. Now his little brother’s name seems likely to do the same. The subtle connection between an O-starting and an O-ending name links the boys nicely, too.

Ines

After bestowing family name James on a daughter in 2014, Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds surprised us with their second daughter’s name, too. Instead of a borrowed-from-the-boys pick, the famous family opted for a traditional Spanish choice, Ines. A form of Agnes also spelled Inez, it was quite stylish in the US circa 1910. No word on why they made the choice, but Ines feels like one to watch.

Lula

Liv Tyler knows what it means to grow up with a trendsetting name, and now her children will, too. She welcomed firstborn Milo back in 2004. Now she and David Gardner are parents to son Sailor Gene, born in 2015, and July 2016 arrival Lula Rose. Vintage Lula fits in with Lucy and Louisa, an early 20th century favorite all but forgotten until now.

Major

Like Natalie and Benjamin, Eva Amurri and husband Kyle Martino stuck with their favorite initial for their children. Daughter Marlowe arrived in August 2014. The family added son Major in October 2016. Eva has talked about sticking with her instincts and choosing unusual names that feel right for her family. Major makes for a big name, but like many bold word names, it feels very current.

Onyx

Alanis Morissette went with the short and meaningful Ever Imre for her son back in 2010. Now she and Mario Treadway have added a daughter to their family with an equally brief and bold name: Onyx Solace. The double word name fits nicely with big brother Ever. While gemstone names like Ruby and Pearl are familiar for girls, Onyx tends to lean masculine – at least for now.

Phoenix

Vanessa Lachey and husband Nick have traveled the U.S. with their children’s names. Eldest son is Camden, followed by daughter Brooklyn. In December 2016, they added son Phoenix. While it sounds like the couple is borrowing from the map, that’s not quite the case ― though Camden was inspired by an LA street and Brooklyn by New York. This last time, Vanessa just plain liked the fast-rising and meaning-rich name.

Sally

Audra McDonald’s firstborn was already a teenager when she welcomed her second. The Tony-winning actress named her elder daughter Zoe Madeline, a choice that proved very stylish in recent years. Last October, she and husband Will Swenson added daughter Sally James to the mix. We know that James is a white hot middle name pick for girls. Is Sally the next Sadie?

Zen

Zoe Saldana and Marco Perego added a third son to their family earlier this year. Zen joined brothers Cy Aridio and Bowie Ezio, twins born in 2014. Zoe and Marco have opted for modern names with roots, unexpected and seldom heard but still very wearable. All three choices could prove influential in the coming years. What we’d love to know: Zen’s middle name!

22 Baby Names That Are About To Get More Popular

In just a few weeks, we’ll see the new popular baby names list for the U.S.. The official list is always packed with surprises, as everything from pop music to sports stars influence what we name our children. Other names rise and fall without any obvious cultural connection, buoyed by style and sound alone. Usually it’s both ― a promising name plus a positive association ― that makes a baby name soar.

Here are our bets for some of the names to watch.

Fastest Rising Vintage Names: Oliver & Hazel

Once musty and fusty, Oliver and Hazel are now the freshest vintage names on the block. Celebrities have embraced them ― Ginnifer Goodwin and Josh Dallas have an Oliver, while Emily Blunt and John Krasinski went with Hazel. Part of their appeal? They’re vintage gems that boast high-value Scrabble letters in their names ― z and v.

Nature Names to Watch: River & Briar

River Phoenix was once the only person we could list with this nature name. Now it’s a mainstream pick for boys, and rising for girls, too. Likewise, Briar ― once mostly associated with Sleeping Beauty’s Briar Rose ― debuted on the U.S. Top 1000 for both genders in 2015. Parents have embraced –r ending names, and our affection for borrowing from nature continues.

Coolest New Names: Fox & Sylvie

We’re always looking for names outside the current top 1000 that seem likely to debut in future years. Sweet Sylvie could follow Sophie and Sadie into wider use, while Fox feels like a logical successor to Max and Knox. In 2015, both names ranked just beyond the official list ― but not by much. Two dozen more girls would put Sylvie over the top, along with 15ish boys for Fox.

Hottest Celebrity-Inspired Names: Remington & Luna

With John Legend and Chrissy Teigen’s adorable Luna Simone in the spotlight, this Harry Potter heroine should keep rising. Ditto for Remington, a surname name chosen by Kelly Clarkson for daughter River Rose’s little brother. Remington is poised to join tough-guy names like Hunter and Ryder near the top of the charts ― plus it comes with built-in nickname Remy.

Mini Names to Watch: Axl & Liv

They’re short, they’re Scandi, and they’re finding favor with American parents. Axel is a Danish spin on the Biblical Absalom. Drop the ‘e’ – as in rocker Axl Rose – and it takes on an edge. Liv comes from Old Norse, but matches up with a modern word meaning life in several Scandinavian languages. Both names pack a lot of sound and substance into just three letters.

Pop Culture Powerhouses: Bowie & Ophelia

Music ― and musicians ― have put dozens of names on the charts, from “Hey There, Delilah” to John Lennon. Bowie, as in the late David, and Ophelia, from The Lumineers’ song, could be next. The early 2016 passing of legendary singer Bowie is likely to inspire more namesakes. As for Ophelia, the Lumineers’ chart-topping song makes the tragic name seem light and new.

Comeback Classics: Harvey & Louisa

Henry and Sophia, meet Harvey and Louisa. Long-neglected, these names are perfectly poised to make a big comeback in 2017. Suits gave the name Harvey to a handsome character, played by Gabriel Macht, nicely updating it for the new century. And Louisa is every bit as literary as Emma, but with the same flowing, feminine, but still substantial, style of smart Sophia.

Meaningful Monikers: Bodhi & Sage

Looking for a meaning-rich name for your child? You’re not alone. Bodhi, from the Sanskrit word for enlightenment, is a new favorite for boys, along with spellings like Bode. Meanwhile, Sage means wisdom but also brings to mind the spice, as well as the familiar girl name Paige. Spelling Saige is trending, but only for girls, while the Sage spelling feels more unisex.

Biblical Names to Watch: Ezra & Ruth

For ages, Ezra seemed too out there, a name reserved for a few historical figures. Lately, the name’s edgy sound has taken it into the U.S. Top 100 – the most popular the name has ever been. Loyal Ruth, on the other hand, dominated the early 20th century popularity charts before fading. In recent years, parents are rediscovering the Old Testament name.

The New Emma & Noah: Asher & Nora

We don’t think the number one names will necessarily fall out of favor anytime soon. But which names are poised to take their place someday? Like Emma, Nora is brief but complete, and feels sweet on a child, serious on an adult. Biblical boy Noah might pass the baton to Asher, a fast-rising possibility with a great meaning: happy.

Names Berries Bank On: Milo & Isla

Not only do we keep the U.S. Top 1000 on our site, we track the most popular names specific to Nameberry. Two choices that readers love that could catch on everywhere? Milo and Isla. Milo combines the sounds of Miles and Leo, but has a quirky charm all its own. Isla seems like a successor to girl names like Ella, Lily, and Mila.

Which names are you watching? Are you hearing more of any of these names?

This Tweet About Pet Names Could Change Your Relationship For The Better

Most couples come up with pet names for each other fairly early into a relationship: Baby, babe, boo, sweetheart ― we all have our faves.

While those are all classics, there’s nothing wrong with switching things up every now and then. Last week, Twitter user @cybersygh suggested doing just that and it really caught on:

Things escalated quickly after that, when Bela Garces (@djbbga on Twitter) showed the tweet to her boyfriend Isaac and posted his reaction:

Isaac loved the idea:

He got a little carried away but it was adorable:

Garces’ hilarious tweet quickly went viral, with over 87K reshares and 241K “likes.”

The 19-year-old told The Huffington Post she couldn’t stop laughing at the nicknames and that Isaac hasn’t stopped since.

“It just makes me laugh every time, it’s so silly,” she said. “He calls me food names in person too, and I try to call him food names back but he’s a lot funnier. My favorite is when he calls me Colombian snacks since we’re both Colombian!”

Here are the two adorable soft tacos together, with one of their favorite foods:

After Garces’ tweet went viral, people kept the momentum going, sharing the food-related terms of endearment they’d texted their girlfriends and boyfriends:

Does it get any more romantic than “you’re more than a snack, you’re a meal?” Nope, not as far as we’re concerned.

Share your favorite snack-related pet name in the comments.

Playboy Names America’s 25 Sexiest Cities, New York Tops The List

Forget the best cities in the country. Playboy magazine released its list ranking America’s 25 Sexiest Cities on Wednesday and we’re already contemplating a move.

According to the magazine, the list was determined by two separate polls that looked at metrics including nightlife, general lifestyle habits and “an undercurrent of desire.” So it’s not exactly scientific.

New York City ranked #1 on the list, mainly because its residents were into “kinky” things and a LOT of sex. “The people are hot, the sex is prime quality and the frequency is high, averaging 138 times per year,” wrote Playboy. Considering NYC has the Museum of Sex and a topless book club, we have to agree with the ranking.

Scroll down to look at the cities that made the top 10 and head over to Playboy to see the rest:

Fashion East Names Spring 2016 Women’s Wear Lineup

LONDON — Fashion East, the London non-profit organization that showcases emerging designers’ collections, has detailed its women’s wear lineup for spring 2016.
The three labels that will host presentations on Sept. 19 in London are Caitlin Price, Richard Malone and This is The Uniform.
Price is showing for the second time as part of Fashion East, after making her debut with the collective in February. Then, the Central Saint Martins MA graduate showed a collection that melded 19th-century period details with sportswear, as in duchesse satin tracksuits appliqued with rosettes.
Richard Malone and This is The Uniform are both showing as part of Fashion East for the first time. Malone is graduate of Central Saint Martins’ BA fashion program, where he won the LVMH Grand Prix scholarship in 2013, while This is the Uniform is designed by Jenna Young, who graduated in fine art textiles from Goldsmiths University in London.
Lulu Kennedy, Fashion East’s director, commented that “all three designers are strong-minded individuals and their girl/woman knows what she’s about,” she said.
The spring 2016 season marks Fashion East’s 15-year anniversary of showing at London Fashion Week, and 12 years of Topshop supporting the showcase.

5 Reasons to Merge Last Names When You Marry

When I (the Lo of Em & Lo) got married, my groom and I wore matching white suits and ties (including inscribed white Converse high tops). Our parents walked each of us down the outside aisles simultaneously until we all met in the middle at the altar. My friend who married us concluded the ceremony with “You may now kiss the groom.”

So it should come as no surprise that I kept my last name. As a modern feminist, there was no way I was going to submit to the anachronistic, sexist tradition of taking my husband’s last name. Plus, my name was way cooler than his: Sharkey vs. Cavella? Come on, there’s no contest. If anything, he should have taken my last name and become Mr. Sharkey.

But once we started to spawn, we wanted to simplify. We’d retain our last names for our respective work purposes, but for family affairs we wanted to be a united front. If he wasn’t going to take my last name (because why should either one of our names get special preference?), then we needed another option. For us, merging was the most elegant solution.

Unfortunately, Sharkey and Cavella do not combine in many flattering ways. Sharkella? Cavarkey? Sharvelley? A frontrunner for a while was the simple Ca + Sh, but the references to both money and the iconic country singer didn’t really match our style. In the end, we took the first three letters from my last name, the middle four letters of his, and then threw in the second to last “e” from mine to create “Shavelle.” It flows, it’s easy to pronounce, and its creation reflects the egalitarian nature of our partnership and parenthood.

So let me elaborate on why I think you, too, should merge when you marry:

1. This is 21st-century America. No longer is marriage a patriarchal business transaction of property and possessions, from one male head of household to another. Marriage is about the union of equals. Let your last name reflect that.

2. If you’re starting a new family by having or adopting a child, why not create a new family name? In the case of hetero reproduction, just as you’re merging your DNA to create new life, you merge your last names to create a new nuclear family name, one that serves its purpose until an adult offspring flies the coop, gets hitched themselves, and creates their own unique modern moniker. You each get to retain a part of your original selves. And family trees can still be observed and recorded — if it worked when one family name (hers) was discarded in marriage, it can work when both family names are, too.

3. With a little creativity, you can create a name that’s cooler and more pleasing to the ear than either of your original last names. Let’s be honest: some last names are just really unfortunate. I had a friend in elementary school with the last name Windshittle — and she was teased mercilessly. You can take the best of both words and make something better. Or just start from scratch. My step-mother actually suggested, “If you’re bothering changing your last names, why not choose something like ‘Rockefeller’ or ‘Cabot’?” You don’t have to be that image-conscious, but you can choose a name that reflects your values or heritages or tastes. For instance, if my husband and I had been big “Ring of Fire” fans, Cash would have been perfect.

4. Merging is a great option for homosexual couples who don’t have a (ridiculous) tradition to fall back on. Plus, stereotypical gender roles may operate less in their relationships, so an option that ignores gender inequities and embraces equality is preferable.

5. Merging last names avoids the various problems of other alternatives. Hyphenation is untenable long-term, creating longer and longer last names that quickly become ridiculous. Merging allows names to remain simple and easy to pronounce. Keeping your own names results in confusion when you have kids: not only do outsiders not know what to call the various members of your family, but you may inadvertently suggest to your children that they’re more closely connected to one parent over the other. Merging into a single name creates familial cohesion and unity when it matters most, i.e. during the upbringing of kids. If you opt to take one name over the other, the person giving up their name may feel like they’ve sacrificed some of their identity and given more power and authority to the partner with the preferable name. Merging names is egalitarian.

14 Things Only People With Tough Names Understand

For TueNight.com by Siobhan Adcock

1. I grew up with a tough name. Siobhan Adcock. Look at it. There’s almost no part of that name that’s not sort of a pain in the ass.

2. People don’t tend to remember it, and when they do, they can’t pronounce it. Siobhan is an Irish name — it means Jane, or Joan, or Joanne, or if you’re feeling like a sparkly unicorn fairy, “sea foam blowing off the waves.” My father told me (incorrectly, as it turns out) that it means “Queen of the Emerald Isles.” He and my mother had heard of it by way of Siobhan McKenna, the famous Irish stage actress who was in Dr. Zhivago. (But not the famously beautiful actress who was in Dr. Zhivago. And also not the second-most beautiful actress in Dr. Zhivago. The other one.)

3. My father’s name, by the way, was Dick. They don’t really name kids that anymore. Especially with a last name like Adcock. Dick Adcock, Jr. Because his father’s name was also Richard. So when my dad was growing up, there was Big Dick Adcock and Little Dick Adcock. No one, apparently, in the early 1950s, thought that was a problem.

4. When I was a kid there was this, um, spread? Like an oleo type of thing? It was light and silky. Chiffon had probably one of the catchier two-word jingles of the ’70s and early ’80s: “It’s… Chiffon!” Every time I got on the school bus, I had to be announced. By everyone. Often in five-point harmony. “It’s… Sio-ffan!”

5. Since my last name starts with an A, every year on the first day of school, I was inevitably the first name on the roll to be called. The fresh, shiny new roll. Oh, my teachers. I pitied them. Here it was, the beginning of a new school year, the school year they hoped they wouldn’t fuck up or make embarrassing mistakes during (especially not on day one), and you could just see their fresh, young, expectant faces crumple and fall when they realized they weren’t even going to be able to get past the first name on the roll call without asking for help.

I’d usually let them suffer in silence for a second or two, squinting and frowning down at the list of names, and then mutter, “Here. I’m here. It’s me, Siobhan.”

Ultimately, you have to make it easy on people.

6. When I go to a restaurant and leave my name for a table, I tell them I’m Suzanne. Or Sabrina. Or Soybean. All actual pronunciation attempts I have heard.

7. You can imagine what I tell baristas.

8. Long ago, I arrived at a formula for how to respond when I’m asked to spell my name. This is especially essential for forms filled out by baffled clipboard holders:

“S-i-o. (Pause here.) B as in Boy. (Another pause.) h-a-n. Last name: A-d-c (Emphasize the c. Then a long, long pause here, almost long enough to make them think you’re done, before the finale.) o-c-k.”

About 50 percent of the time, I get: “A-d what?”

“C-O-C-K. COCK! COCK!”

“Cock?”

9. And then I went into digital publishing, primarily at women’s websites, and as such, I’ve had a lot of awesome email addresses:

sadcock@women.com

sadcock@ivillage.com

sadcock@theknot.com

All the places a cock could ostensibly be sad, I have worked at.

10. I imagine other people with “cock” in their last names also have this problem, but I’ve discovered that I actually can’t register for a new email address with my real name anymore, because it sets off a spam filter, and I’m asked to “choose another name.” (You choose another name, Yahoo!)

11. My sister, Gillian Adcock, has, for many years, been a teacher at a local high school. When she was single, she kept her last name a secret at work — she had to. For all these lovable teenagers, she was only ever “Miss A” for years, until she got married and then became Mrs. Fletcher. I mean, can you imagine what a roomful of teenagers would do with something like “Miss Adcock”?

12. When I got married, I had the opportunity, at last, to change my last name. I went to the marriage license place in downtown Brooklyn with my soon-to-be husband, whose last name is innocuous and contains no filthy words. I probably could have changed my first name too while I was at it — nobody in that office seems like they’re paying a whole lot of attention. But I didn’t. Looking down at the form, I understood that I didn’t want to. My father died when I was in college, and we’re not in great touch with what’s left of his side of the family, and I didn’t want the Adcocks, our Adcocks, the Adcocks with the balls, to name their children ridiculous things like “Dick” — twice — and then, later, “Siobhan,” to perish from this Earth. I kept my name.

I am also lazy and didn’t want to deal with a lot of paperwork.

Adcock it is, then. Forever.

13. I always thought that when I finally had a kid I’d name her Jane, or Kate, or Mary. But I didn’t. We gave out daughter a name that combined our grandmothers’ names. It’s phonetic, at least, but it’s not super-recognizable or common. You don’t actually want a common name, I’ve found. After 40-plus years as Siobhan Adcock (God, when you say it out loud, there’s even the suggestion of “nads” in there — it really might be the second filthiest name ever, after Big Dick Adcock), I now know that an uncommon name gives you something to live up to, and that’s both a challenge and a stroke of luck. So we gave her a name that people will ask her annoying questions about all her life.

14. When I was in college, I worked at the library. And one day, this guy came in. And he checked out some books. And when he left, I kept the screen open on his record and just stared at it for a while, feeling like some previously unknown, oddly comforting corner of the universe had arrived before me, and called out its name:

Anil Dikshit.

The Top 100 Baby Names Of 2014, According To Nameberry

According to Nameberry, the most popular baby names for 2014 are Imogen for girls and Asher for boys. Nameberry’s Top 100 list is based on the number of views each name attracted on the website, out of a total of nearly 50 million views in 2014.

But the biggest news is the huge influence of television and celebrities on names zooming up Nameberry’s popularity list. The “Game of Thrones”-inspired girls’ name Khaleesi ranks at Number 2, with Daenerys also in the Nameberry Top 100.

On the boys’ side, new names entering the Top 10 are Silas, popularized by “Weeds,” along with Jasper, Milo and Ezra. The biggest leaps were the Jolie-Pitt-influenced Knox, up 60 places, followed by Archer and Ryker.

The three names climbing furthest up the Nameberry Top 100 for girls are Ellie, Cordelia and Maya; others include Adeline, plus four stylish L-names: Lucy, Lila, Louisa and Luna.

Names that made the biggest slides are emblematic of pop culture shifts. For girls, names losing popularity include Katniss from “The Hunger Games” along with popular celebrity baby choices Harper, Seraphina, and Everly. For boys, Flynn, of “Breaking Bad,” dropped 67 places, followed by Christian of 50 Shades of Grey and Arlo of “Justified.” Even George, as in 2013’s little prince, lost 36 spots.

These Women Kept Their Maiden Names And This Was The Reaction

Following the marriage proposal, brides-to-be are inevitably asked this polarizing question: Are you changing your name?

For some, the answer is an easy “yes.” For those who are on the fence however — or those who simply want to keep the name they were born with for personal or professional reasons — it’s a bit more complicated.

A Reddit thread emerged recently asking women who kept their maiden names to elaborate on their experiences. This is what they had to say:

1. You might be called a “feminist bitch.”
“My husband took my last name. His father was totally okay with it … His mom, however, pitched a fit and almost didn’t come to our wedding. She called me a ‘feminist bitch,’ even though it was her son’s idea and had nothing to do with gender issues and was really angry about it … after six years of marriage, she sends letters and cards only to his first name, and won’t write our last name for him.”

2. Some people might freak out…
“People are generally okay with me keeping my name, but when we would tell people we were considering him changing his they freaked out. I had several men tell me I was taking away his dignity and making him my woman. It’s ridiculous how tiny, stupid traditions can really pinpoint the sexist nature of our society.”

3. But others will surprise you.
“Strangely, even in my small town that is very traditional and not the most open-minded, people were generally understanding.”

5. Owning your decision is the best course of action.
“I’m Hispanic and have 5 names, so IDGAF about more names, but quite enjoy mine and want one name throughout academia, so people kind of let it be. Some thought it was weird, others didn’t care, but at the end of the day, it’s my name and it’s staying that way.”

6. Some things, like traveling, become more difficult.
“Not having the same name is a bit difficult when traveling sometimes. We have bought plane tickets together, selected our seats next to each other, and then arrive at the airport to see that one of us was moved … Crossing borders and coming back into the country gets double-takes … there’s almost always a question or a statement of ‘oh, you have different last names.’ I’ve pondered making a shrunk-down copy of our marriage license and laminating it for situations like that.”

7. And your parents may get confused.
My parents never quite figured out what to call me. They would address cards to us as his full name & my first name, like Mickey Mouse & Minnie. This is despite the fact that my name never changed, and they could just address the letter to the name they gave me at birth.”

7. Not everyone will agree with your choice…
“Online is the worst. I once got ranted against for hating traditional men (I don’t). People in real life actually told me I was a bad mom for not having one family name. That hurt a lot.”

8. But don’t feel pressured to change your mind.
“A lot of people told me something along the lines of, ‘But you have to!’ I asked why every time. Every time they said, ‘That’s just how it’s done.’ I told everyone that wasn’t a good enough reason for me.”

9. If your partner loves you, he’ll be happy with your decision.
“I told my boyfriend that if we ever got married I would not change my name. His response: ‘Ok, doesn’t matter to me, I don’t want to change my name either’. That was that.”

10. Some family members won’t know how to react.
“I’m not sure our families have quite figured out how to address cards to us, but other than that there’s been no response or comments on it.”

11. Politely correcting people will become second nature.
“Sometimes people make the mistake of assuming we have the same last name, but we either just let them assume what they want or politely correct them and so far nobody has freaked out or anything.”

12. Just ignore the ridiculous questions you may be asked.
“My husband didn’t really care one way or the other. I actually appreciated his indifference. He rightly saw that my name was mine and what I did with it was my decision. Our family, on the other hand, had some issues … Some of his relatives actually asked if it was legal for me to keep my maiden name.”

13. It may be awkward at times…
“General response… is ‘oh,’ a cough, and then a bit of awkward silence. So I go back to whatever I was doing and it passes.”

14. But some people will really respect you for it.
“I kept my last name and most females my age that I talked to about it were surprised. It was almost always immediately followed by, ‘That’s so awesome–I changed my name, and I like it, but I think it’s really cool that you kept yours.’ I never got a snooty response.”

7000 Baby Names

7000 Baby Names

A name is for life! It may be sad, but it is certainly true that you don’t meet too many high-flying, successful guys called Wayne or Elvis. What you hope for your baby to become, is as much a consideration as the names you like. The decisions you make will create an image or style that your baby will have to grow up with – and grow into. You owe it to this experience to consider a wide choice of names. You should browse and extract names from this book. The issues are many. From trendy to traditional, and from the popular to the sophisticated. You have to strike the balance that you feel is right for your baby.
