Victoria Beckham Partners With Reebok, Plans Collaboration for Next Year

BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM: With her new deal with Reebok, Victoria Beckham is the latest designer to link up with a major athletic brand.
The British-born designer let her 17.6 million Instagram followers know by posting a video of herself wearing the Club C sneakers outside of the company’s new Boston headquarters. She made the most of her first day on the scene, hosting an all-company meeting, touring the office, checking out the brand’s archives and holding initial design and planning meetings.
The choice of Beckham is meant to further Reebok’s message of women’s empowerment, which includes a roster of internationally known personalities like Ariana Grande, Gigi Hadid, Aly Raisman and Teyana Taylor. With four children and a multimillion-dollar business, Beckham would appear to have little time for exercise. Whippet-lean as she is, Beckham has spoken publicly about her daily two-hour morning workouts and healthy diet. Reebok executives undoubtedly approve of that regimen. The fact that Beckham’s designs are meant to relay a sense of strength, confidence and power also met their approval.
Beckham said, “I have always championed instilling confidence in women and Reebok is a brand that has been at the forefront of this same message for decades. To have the

Woman Who Sabotaged Fiancé’s Kayak Sentenced to 4 Years — But Could Be Released Next Month

Angelika Graswald, the New York woman who pleaded guilty to criminally negligent homicide in the drowning death of her fiancé as they kayaked on the Hudson River in 2015, was sentenced Wednesday to 15 months to four years in state prison, her attorney confirms to PEOPLE.

Graswald had faced murder charges in the death of Vincent Viafore, 46, but pleaded guilty to the lesser charge in July.

Graswald’s attorney, Richard Portale, previously told PEOPLE he expects her to be home as early as next month due to time served since her arrest in April of 2015.

At the sentencing, Viafore’s sister, Laura Rice, told Judge Robert Freehill that she thinks of her brother’s “last moments alive…and I visualize him trying to survive hypothermia in the freezing cold river, confused and not understanding why the woman who said she loved him and wanted to marry him did nothing to help him,” reports the Poughkeepsie Journal

Viafore drowned on April 19, 2015 in the Hudson River after his kayak capsized in rough seas and windy conditions. He and Graswald were kayaking back to the mainland from an afternoon on Bannerman Island, an island in the Hudson River in Dutchess County.

Ten days later, Graswald was charged with second-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter after police said she told them she removed a plug from the kayak to destabilize it and had taken a connector off the paddle.

Once Viafore was in the river, prosecutors said Graswald pulled Viafore’s paddle away from him as he fought for his life, then waited until he had drowned before calling 911.

The motive was $ 250,000 in life insurance policies, prosecutors said.

In her plea deal to the reduced charges, Graswald admitted she knew that the locking clip to Viaforte’s kayak paddle was missing, that he was not wearing a life vest or a wet suit, and that the waters in the Hudson River were dangerously cold and rough at the time.

But it was Graswald’s lack of urgency in seeking help for Viafore after he entered the freezing April waters that Judge Freehill said led to Viafore’s death.

“It was the immediate act of your being in your kayak and Vincent floundering in the water, and you taking no action to help him,” Freehill said, according to the Times-Herald Record.

Graswald has long maintained her innocence regarding the murder charges. In a statement her attorney released after the sentencing hearing, Graswald said: “I am not a murderer. I’ve said that from the beginning. If I could do anything to bring Vince back, I would.”

Graswald is a native of Latvia, and Viafore’s family wants Graswald deported after she finishes her sentence — a sentence they feel is far too short, the Poughkeepsie Journal reports.

In an interview with reporters after the hearing, Viafore’s mother, Mary Ann Viafore, told reporters that “justice was not served for my son. Four years for taking someone’s life? No way.”

Sotheby’s Taps Caroline Issa for Next ‘Contemporary Curated’ Sale

COLLECTING FANTASIES: Caroline Issa has channeled her fantasies in the artworks she has curated for the upcoming Sotheby’s “Contemporary Curated” sale in London.
The fashion director and chief executive officer of Tank magazine is joining the likes of Erdem Moralioglu, Anya Hindmarch and Michael Clark, who have all participated as guest curators in the ongoing initiative by Sotheby’s.
Issa said the collaboration with Sotheby’s “has been a mixture of education and rediscovery, finding things that catch one’s eye, seeking out unusual or rare finds, and looking up the artists or historical pieces that were new to me,” said Issa, who has always dabbled in art.
Tank magazine has had art as one of its key subjects, while her aunt Rose Issa is known as one of the first curators of contemporary Iranian and Middle Eastern art.
“Art, just as much as fashion, often inspires an entire issue of the magazine, a photo shoot we conceive and can be a springboard for a brand campaign or a look. It can also confuse, madden and induce euphoria,” she said.
The pieces Issa chose for the auction are a mix of photography, watercolor paintings, sculpture and other mixed media pieces.
“Some of the works spoke to me because they

COS Opens Downtown L.A. Store, Chicago Up Next

GROWING SCENE: COS is set to open the doors to its 5,511-square-foot store in downtown Los Angeles on Friday afternoon.
The space, located within the 90-year-old Olympic Theatre building, places it roughly a block away from the Broadway and Ninth Street corridor that a cluster of retailers — including Mykita, Tanner Goods, Aesop, BNKR, Acne and A.P.C. — call home.
COS partnered with The Gentlewoman, the British magazine, on a map available in-store pointing out Los Angeles landmarks. Among the stops are the building where the new COS store sits along with the Eames House, Frank Gehry’s residence and Walt Disney Concert Hall.
In late 2015 the minimalist retailer, part of H&M Group, tested the downtown market with a pop-up shop designed in collaboration with design firm Snarkitecture.
“L.A. has always been a city of huge importance to the COS brand and the architecture, art and design scene here are all points of inspiration to our creative team,” said COS managing director Marie Honda. “We are very happy with the brand’s growth in the U.S. and look forward to introducing more stores into the market in 2018.”
Los Angeles marks the final new store opening for the retailer in the U.S. for this year and its

Wife of American Barcelona Victim Speaks Out: ‘I Don’t Want to Wake Up Without Him Next to Me

The wife of the California man who died after a van attack in Barcelona, Spain, on Thursday said she feels “empty” without him.

In a sit-down with NBC News, Heidi Nunes-Tucker, 40, opened up about losing husband Jared Tucker, 42, during their first wedding anniversary trip through Italy, France and Spain.

“I’d found my person: truly the love of my life. That was obvious to anybody that knew us or saw us,” she said. “And I don’t know that you find that again, and I don’t know that I want to.”

Nunes-Tucker shared that she is struggling to cope with the fact that she won’t have her husband beside her for the everyday events.

“I don’t want to wake up without him next to me, and I don’t want to watch TV without him,” she explained. “All of it is just going to be a lot more empty.”

• Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Click here to get breaking crime news, ongoing trial coverage and details of intriguing unsolved cases in the True Crime Newsletter.

Nunes-Tucker said that the duo were stopping for sangria at a café on the popular street of La Rambla on their way to the beach. They separated when Tucker went to find a bathroom.

“No more than … 30 seconds to a minute after he left, all mayhem broke out and people were screaming and crying and running,” Nunes-Tucker said.

A van had begun plowing through pedestrians, ultimately killing 13 and injuring scores more.

She was pushed inside the souvenir kiosk and stayed there hiding until the chaos was over. Afterwards, she was unable to find Tucker.

Nunes-Tucker felt a sense of hope when she saw a photo of her husband after the attack appearing to receive helped by someone. However, that optimism shattered when she went to a police station and cops revealed Tucker had died in the attack.

“It’s hard not to be angry,” she said. “It’s confusing why anybody would want to hurt anybody like that. Why would you want to hurt strangers? Why would you want to hurt anybody?”

RELATED VIDEO: Missing California Man Was Killed In Barcelona Attack, Says Dad

Tucker, who was excited to share this special anniversary trip with his soul mate, never mentioned any hesitation about visiting Europe, despite it being the target of a series of deadly terror attacks in recent years, according to a close friend.

“He didn’t live a life afraid, he didn’t have fear of anything,” Billy Claraty told PEOPLE. “He took things head on all the time and thought he would get through it. They were just out to celebrate one year and have a great time and see some friends.”

In September of 2012 at an art and wine festival in Lafayette, California, Tucker opened his heart to Nunes, a teacher and the mother of a teenage son.

“When he met her, it was immediate, they both knew,” says Claraty. “Heidi was his total life, they had a great, amazing relationship. He had a bumpy road for awhile with past relationships and once he met Heidi that turned around for him.”

A website set up for his wedding to Nunes shows they were married on Aug. 6, 2016, after becoming engaged on Sept. 10, 2015.

A GoFundMe page has been set up by Tucker’s family to cover funeral costs and help raise money to go towards his daughters’ education.

The Met’s Costume Institute Said Eyeing Fashion and Religion for Next Year’s Exhibition

KEEPING THE FAITH: In these politically charged times, it appears that the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute isn’t afraid to take on its own controversial topics.
Fashion and religion will be the theme of next year’s major exhibition, according to multiple sources, including a few who said they have been privy to preliminary discussions. A Met spokeswoman declined to comment Friday.
With the May opening still many months away, the planning is still in the very early stages. Sources describe the project as serious and ambitious, and it is understood the idea was hatched long before the current “Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: The Art of the In-Between” show, slated to close Sept. 4. A host of European designers have referenced religion in their collections, including the likes of Jean Paul Gaultier, John Galliano and Riccardo Tisci. The likeness of the Madonna has been appropriated by Dolce & Gabbana, and the iconography of Jesus has been featured in Jeremy Scott’s collection. Prabal Gurung once brought Buddhist monks to his runway.
In recent years, the Costume Institute exhibitions have been major blockbusters for The Met. Last year’s “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology” attracted 752,995 visitors, making it the museum’s seventh

StarkX Readies for Next Phase of Growth

GROWTH MODE: Perry Stark four years ago founded her line of casual basics called StarkX and the Los Angeles brand may finally be hitting its stride.
The line doubled its door count in the past year to about 100 stores, including Anthropologie and Saint Bernard in Dallas. The designer just recently launched e-commerce following a doubling in companywide sales as demand has strengthened for her line of casual, easy separates. Think cotton gauze pants and blouses mixed with linen jersey tops.
The line is made in downtown Los Angeles, around the same area where the designer attended the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising some 27 years ago when the school was still on Flower and 7th Streets and the Staples Center didn’t yet exist.
The designer’s now plotting an expansion into Europe and in the spring began testing the concession model with an in-line shop at Addō Sag Harbor in the Hamptons.
“It’s been amazing and we just sell more and more. It’s perfect for resort,” Stark said of the shop.
The designer would eventually like to open her own stores, with growth into that expected next spring. Stark said she’s eyeing markets such as Brentwood, Santa Monica or Malibu for her first store.

FGI’s Margaret Hayes to Be Honored at Next Month’s ‘Hamptons Happening’

SALUTING HAYES: The Fashion Group International’s president and chief executive officer Margaret Hayes will be among the honorees at next month’s Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation’s Hamptons Happening fund-raiser.
The Grammy-nominated Rufus Wainwright will headline this year’s event and an up-and-coming musician Sophie Beem, a protégé of Beyoncé, will also perform. About 500 guests are expected to descend on Maria and Kenneth Fishel’s 15-acre home in Bridgehampton for the August 5 event. Other honorees will include First Wall Street Capital’s charman and ceo Glenn Myles, agent-producer-author Shep Gordon, restaurateur and chef Gabriel Kreuther and Magnolia Bakery’s chief baking officer Bobbie Lloyd.
A proponent of education and special events, Hayes has overseen such key programs at FGI as the group’s annual Night of Stars gala, a symposium series and a ready-to-wear trend one. The SWCRF honor personally hits home for the fashion executive. Hayes, a supporter of many cancer research initiatives, said, “As a cancer survivor myself, cancer research is not only philosophically critical, but has been vital to me in the course of my own life.”
Wainwright will be a familiar face to the fashion types who turn up next month. In addition to singing at Michael Kors’ fashion show in New York

Got $20 Million? Use It To Move Next Door To The Queen

We haven’t pined over a neighbor this badly since Mr. Rogers was on television.

London’s Buckingham Gate is a six-unit lap of luxury building which, according to its brochure, is made up of “impressive grand two and three bedroom apartments, crafted out of three 19th-century Grade II Listed townhouses.”

It’s also situated right next door to and overlooking ― you guessed it ― Buckingham Palace, Queen Elizabeth II’s famous London residence.

Its pièce de résistance is a $ 20 million-plus penthouse that spans 5,189 square feet, two floors and two buildings, boasts three bedrooms, three private terraces and was designed by “one of the most celebrated names in the world of contemporary interiors.” It is aptly referred to as the “jewel in the crown” of the project, according to House Beautiful UK.

An apartment situated on the first and second floor will run you around a cooler $ 14 million. But if you’re going to go big, you might as well pick the pad that could potentially give you a direct view at the queen rolling around the driveway in her Jaguar. At least that’s what we imagine she’s doing behind those closed gates.

And who knows? Perhaps her majesty will be coming knocking on your door in her jammies one night for a cup of milk.

Us mere mortals (with deep pockets) can dream.

Michelle Obama is still fighting the good fight when it comes to issues that matter to her.

Obama sat down with Sam Kass, the former White House chef and senior advisor for nutrition policy, in Washington, D.C., on Friday for the Partnership for a Healthier America summit to address childhood obesity. And she took aim at President Donald Trump’s policies

“This is where you really have to look at motives,” she said. “You really have to stop and think, ‘Why don’t you want our kids to have good food at school? What is wrong with you and why is that a partisan issue?’ Why would that be political? What is going on?”

Access to healthy school lunches was the former first lady’s focus while in the White House, and Trump’s administration has been rolling back those efforts

The Obamas took some time for themselves after Trump’s inauguration in January, inking book deals, vacationing and just generally living their best lives

But they’re back and they’re not going anywhere.

“We’re not gone, we’re just breathing, y’all. Let us breathe,” Obama insisted, per People magazine. “We’ve got to get our new lives set up.”

“When you hear me getting riled up in this chair, it’s not politics, it’s parenting that’s really moving me,” she said, adding that everyone needs to “put aside our politics … to not be cynical … to not give up.”

She’s certainly not.

“You’ve got me as a partner as long as I can be of use,” she said. “So the question for you is, where do you want me? Just let me know and I’ll be here.”

How Heath Ledger’s Legacy Is Nurturing the Next Generation of Dreamers

Nine years after Heath Ledger’s death, members of his inner circle share memories of his zest for life and his troubled final days. Subscribe now for the emotional new details and never-before-seen photos — only in PEOPLE.

Heath Ledger‘s legacy is helping aspiring Aussie actors get a start in Hollywood.

In partnership with his family and high-profile friends, the organization Australians in Film created the Heath Ledger Scholarship, which aims to help young actors make the difficult transition to Hollywood — just like the late Australian actor did.

“It’s designed to help Australian actors make their international career leap, sort of like a network to establish them in Hollywood and provide them with support and assistance,” Ledger’s sister Kate tells PEOPLE in the latest issue. “From industry introduction to managing finances to providing airfares back and forth to Australia, we aim to provide the complete transitional package.”

The scholarship has been awarded annually since 2009, and winners have included Fifty Shades Darker‘s Bella Heathcote and James Mackay, who appeared in Hacksaw Ridge and can be seen in the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.

Ledger is the focus the new Spike TV documentary I Am Heath Ledger (set to premiere on Spike TV on May 17 following its debut at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 23), which provides a revealing glimpse of the star including his early days as an actor. Like those his scholarship aims to help, Ledger himself made the leap from Australia to California in 1998 after moving from his hometown of Perth to Sydney when he was 17.

Courtesy Ledger Estate

When his career took off in 1999 following the sleeper smash 10 Things I Hate About You, the actor made sure to help out other Aussies coming up behind him by letting them crash at his house — even if he didn’t know them that well.

“I think he knew how hard it was himself because when he first moved over, he didn’t have anything,” Kate says. “It’s such a tough existence when you have nothing and you have to start from the beginning. Hollywood is big and scary and it is a hard thing to crack.”

For more on Heath Ledger, including the revealing new documentary about his life and legacy, pick up the new issue of PEOPLE, on newsstands Friday

Now in its ninth year, the scholarship is appointed by a panel of high-profile judges who review hundreds of submissions. This year’s judges include Naomi Watts, Ryan Murphy and Gary Oldman, while past judges have included Colin Farrell, Rose Byrne, Jude Law and Vince Vaughn.

It includes a seven-day trip to California, $ 16,000 for expenses like rent, a living allowance and transportation, and even acting classes. Benefactors for the scholarship include the Ledger family, Michelle Williams, Naomi Watts, Hugh Jackman, Rose Byrne, Vince Vaughn, Liam Hemsworth, Baz Luhrmann, Nicole Kidman and The Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

Through the scholarship, its judges and benefactors hope to nurture Australian actors whose talents can burn as brightly as the star who inspired it.

“Sometimes people break through because of one thing, whether it’s good looks or talent or timing or who knows? But he sort of had everything down,” Watts says in I Am Heath Ledger. “One of the most powerful things for an actor, particularly for a man, is their voice and their physicality and their level of masculinity, and he had all of those things in spades.”

Applications for the 2017 edition are open now.

NEW YORK – Clare Waight Keller, Givenchy’s next artistic director, is to show her first collection for the French house during Paris Fashion Week in October and has been tasked with propelling its roots as a Fifties couture house further into the modern age.
“She has this great ability to break the rules and innovate without making a revolution,” said Givenchy chief executive officer Philippe Fortunato, who confirmed the hire exclusively to WWD. “Her very focused approach will help the brand in building the ongoing momentum we have – and taking it to the next level.”
An official announcement is expected later today, detailing that her creative responsibilities include women’s and men’s ready-to-wear and accessories collections as well as couture. May 2 is her start date.
Waight Keller becomes Givenchy’s sixth couturier and the first woman at the creative helm, thrusting the former Chloé designer into the haute spotlight as Givenchy marks its 65th anniversary this year.
The fact of having for the first time a woman envisioning the brand, designing for women and men, is unique for the house. That by itself will give it a different angle and a different point of view from the past.

Martin Scorsese’s Next Movie Is Heading To Netflix

Netflix has acquired its most prestigious title yet: a Martin Scorsese movie.

“The Irishman,” a $ 100 million gangster flick starring Robert De Niro, was initially set up at Paramount, which released Scorsese’s previous movie, “Silence.” But with 12-year Paramount chief Brad Grey leaving the studio after a financially spotty 2016, Scorsese and his team opted to package the movie elsewhere, according to IndieWire.

“Scorsese’s movie is a risky deal, and Paramount is not in the position to take risks,” a source reportedly told IndieWire. “This way, he can make the project he wants.”

In other words, Scorsese’s team wants to work somewhere that executives won’t panic about box-office numbers. That’s presumably a response to “Silence,” which cost $ 46 million but earned only $ 7.1 million domestically after proving difficult to market to mainstream moviegoers.

First announced in 2008, “The Irishman” is an adaptation of the Charles Brandt book I Heard You Paint Houses, which follows mob hitman Frank Sheeren, who confessed to killing labor-union leader and organized-crime honcho Jimmy Hoffa. Steve Zaillian (”Schindler’s List,” “Gangs of New York”) wrote the script.

“The Irishman” will mark Scorsese’s ninth movie with De Niro. It also stars Al Pacino and Joe Pesci, who have worked with Scorsese before, too.

Even if the financials behind this decision seem logical, it’s a surprise move for a director known as a disciple of traditional cinema. Scorsese has long preached about his preference for shooting on film instead of digitally, the medium most directors opt for nowadays. Still, he hasn’t shied away from television, co-creating “Vinyl” and directing the “Boardwalk Empire” pilot for HBO.

‘‘Cinema is gone,’’ Scorsese told the Associated Press in December. ‘‘The cinema I grew up with and that I’m making, it’s gone. The theater will always be there for that communal experience, there’s no doubt. But what kind of experience is it going to be? Is it always going to be a theme-park movie? I sound like an old man, which I am. The big screen for us in the ’50s, you go from Westerns to ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ to the special experience of ‘2001’ in 1968. The experience of seeing ‘Vertigo’ and ‘The Searchers’ in VistaVision.’’

Regardless, this is a boon for Netflix, which jump-started its original features with the 2015 Oscar hopeful “Beasts of No Nation.” At the Sundance Film Festival last month, the streaming service acquired more titles than any traditional studio, even snagging the festival’s strongest Oscar contender, the World War II race drama “Mudbound,” for a pricey $ 12.5 million

Straight Guys Agree To Look At Dick Pics And What Happens Next Is Hilarious

Most gay men, by definition, enjoy seeing (and doing other things with) other men’s junk. Straight men, on the other hand, do not typically enjoy seeing (and doing other things) with other men’s junk.

Inspired by this distinct difference, YouTube fave Davey Wavey wondered what would happen if he found a group of straight men to offer their thoughts about a series of photos featuring other men’s genitalia.

The results are legitimately hilarious but also go a long way (at least anecdotally) to give us some insight into what these guys ― and perhaps, by extension, straight men as a broad population ― think about when confronted by a penis that is not their own.

“I’ve made 800+ LGBT-themed videos over that last ten years and this video, featuring four straight men, is probably the gayest thing I’ve ever filmed,” Wavey told The Huffington Post. “I was surprised by how much the straight guys had to say about each dick,” he added. “They really critiqued each picture, even commenting on angles and lighting. It’s clear that they’ve spent a long time thinking about dicks.”

So what do they think? Check out the video above to find out, but for Wavey, one thing is clear.

“I was struck by how impressed they were with the well-endowed images,” he said. “It further proves my theory that just about everyone (even straight guys) loves a big dick.”

All Woman Project’s New Campaign Takes Diversity To The Next Level

Charli Howard and Clementine Desseaux, the model powerhouse duo behind the body-positive All Woman Project, are back and better than ever with a new range of absolutely stunning imagery that proves beauty is not seen in just one size, age or race.

Howard, who was dropped from her modeling agency in 2015, has become a leader in the conversation surrounding inclusivity ever since. She launched the campaign with Desseaux back in September 2016 by way of a diverse, super sexy editorial featuring models of all different shapes, sizes and skin tones.

The second installment of the project teams up with Aerie, a brand known to advocate for inclusivity. Desseaux explained to The Huffington Post that the new series, featuring an even wider range of women, is “a whole new ballgame.”

“We took our imagery to another level and wanted to mix all the codes so they can finally blur and not be limited by what people expect from a body-positive campaign. We included diversity in a whole new way, from milky tones to ebony ones and teenage skins to mature ones. Our team is still all women but those women are real everyday heroes with some amazing stories to tell.”

Howard, Desseaux and Lawrence once again star in the images and are joined by the likes of a surfer, a fitness expert and a professor.

Calling the second installment proof that this is a “more permanent” effort rather than a “trend,” Desseaux also announced that All Woman Project has become a charity so it can “do more than only releasing diverse images. Now, we’re going to go out to schools with some of our team members from both campaigns and make a real change for girls, locally, where it’s the most needed.”

Sounds like there is still so much more to come from this rad, body-positive campaign, and we can’t wait to see what’s next.

‘1984’ Sales Have Skyrocketed. Here’s What To Read Next.

Last week, after Kellyanne Conway gave an interview describing falsehoods as “alternative facts,” sales of George Orwell’s decades-old classic 1984 spikedThe book, a part of so many high-school syllabi, appears to be helping people contextualize political rhetoric; the sales boost even led Michiko Kakutani at The New York Times to write an homage to the still-relevant novel, headlined “Why ‘1984’ Is a 2017 Must-Read.”

But, as The New Republic pointed out, it’s not the only title that can offer valuable insight. Writer Josephine Livingston suggested that Franz Kafka’s The Trial might be a more salient comparison. Sophie Gilbert noted in The Atlantic that Sinclair Lewis and Hannah Arendt books have also seen sales boosts in the past year.

When it comes to undermining the media, controlling the dissemination of information and political leaders’ contradictions, there’s plenty of literary precedent. If you’ve read Orwell and are looking for more novels on these topics, there’s a range of dystopian and realistic fiction grappling with censorship and propaganda. We’ve collected a few below:

The Tsar of Love and Techno by Anthony Marra

Marra’s connected stories span generations, showing how history erodes certain truths and throws others into relief. The first story is about a more concrete kind of censorship; its protagonist works in Joseph Stalin’s Department of Party Propaganda and Agitation, literally removing faces from paintings and newspapers. When he fails to do his job, haunted by the face of a familiar-looking ballerina, there are consequences.

The Word Exchange by Alena Graedon

The dystopian world imagined by Graedon isn’t so dissimilar from our own, which is what makes her novel particularly frightening. A sort of neurological disease has the potential to infect the tech-obsessed, making them no longer able to communicate clearly. Deeper readers remain more or less immune to the affliction, anchored as they are in context.

The Noise of Time by Julian Barnes

Barnes’ latest novel isn’t a dystopian one, but an intimate look at the life of an artist under tyrannical watch. Composer Dmitri Shostakovich goes unnoticed by Stalin until the ruler makes his negative thoughts on his music clear. He’s neither killed nor exiled, but instead made to represent Soivet ideals, forcing him to question which is more valuable: his art or his life.

Censoring an Iranian Love Story by Shahriar Mandanipour

In his review of Mandanipour’s novel, the critic James Wood reminded readers that “tyranny is the mother of metaphor, and all that.” In other words, a novelist hailing from a country where censorship is a literary restriction might get creative with his storytelling methods. Such is the case in this love story, centered on what can and can’t be communicated publicly about a private relationship.

The Flame Alphabet by Ben Marcus

Ah, teens. Their tendency to spew righteous, thinly researched nonsense is annoying, but it’s harmless ― endearing, even. Right? Not so in Marcus’ experimental novel, where the language of young people is physically harmful to their parents. Naturally, chaos follows; unethical testing practices ensue, and the novel’s hero, Sam, strikes out on his own to find a cure. Which is all to say that words are as capable of harm as actions.

The Circle by Dave Eggers

When we imagine censorship, we imagine good citizens silenced by overt governmental mandates, finding clever new ways to express themselves in spite of noxious restrictions. In Eggers’ novel ― soon to be adapted into a film ― censorship is more complicated than that. It stems instead from a well-meaning corporate culture gone awry. At the Circle ― a Google-meets-Facebook conglomerate ― openness is valued over privacy, and self-censorship arises as a result.

The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood

Another beloved book soon to be adapted for the screen, Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale is about a religious fundamentalist movement that occurs swiftly, oppressing women in its wake. In this imagined dystopia, called Gilead, women are issued uniforms and are separated from their families. They’re also not allowed to read ― knowledge, after all, is freeing.

Super Sad True Love Story by Gary Shteyngart

If the choppy-sounding title of Shteyngart’s most recent novel ― Super Sad True Love Story ― doesn’t sound to you like Doublespeak, maybe the 1984 connection will be made clearer by its premise. In a near-future society where personal devices and individual “scores” are obsessed over, relationships are stripped of their nuance and intimate connection is nearly impossible. Sad!

The Orphan Master’s Son by Adam Johnson

In Johnson’s portrayal of North Korea, the government is prone to doing one thing while publicly declaring that it’s doing an entirely different thing. It’s a tactic that, on an individual level, can lead citizens to question their own perceptions of reality; on a large, governmental scale, the method of control is even more potent. To illustrate the rift between private and public knowledge, the book is told both from a first-person perspective, using the language of sheeny propaganda.

Mother Night by Kurt Vonnegut

An apolitical playwright — American born, German raised — stays in Germany during World War II, and joins onto the Nazis’ propaganda campaign. After the war, he returns to America, where he eventually becomes a symbol of a white supremacist group. The story, like Vonnegut’s Bluebeard, is written as he narrates the writing of his own diary.

Now is the Time: Do the Next, Right Thing

We will make only one choice.

Throughout our lives, we do only one thing. Again and again, moment by moment, year after year. It is how we live our days, how we shape our lives.

Our choice is this: What is the next, right thing for us to do? Where, in this moment, will we place our time, our care, our attention? Do we remain as we are, do we move? do we speak or keep silent, attend to this person, or that task, or turn away, in this direction, or that?

Each new moment demands a fresh choice.

after every decision, there is yet another to be made. And another. Ours are not so often obviously dramatic choices. We are rarely called upon to know the time to change careers, the day to get married, the hour to leave the city of our birth. Most choices are small, quiet, intimate things that flow from us as a breath, as water exhaled from a mountain spring. Endless, simple, one by one thimbles of water tumble into the next, creating the smallest trickles playing this way and that. Still. Over time, with neither map nor plan – through surprising twists, curving around unforeseen obstacles-mere droplets of water will always invariably find their way down, down, through the valley, completing their pilgrimage at last to become one, an ancient and familiar melting, into the sea, from which it came.

At every point of resistance, any threat of change, our tiny stream makes a choice: To go right or left? Over or around? Or it may just stop, right where it is. Without moving, our stream becomes a shallow pool, creates a slowly growing fullness, waiting. Waiting for that singularly perfect moment when the only possible next thing is to spill itself out and over, stumbling and rushing everywhere along its way.

The stream knows nothing of what lies ahead. It is not conscious of planning for any possible future. It is simply following the path of least resistance, motivated by gravity. Still, how does the water “decide” to go right, or left, when approaching a boulder, a fallen tree? And yet, a choice is made. Inch by inch, the water does the next, right thing, perhaps encountering tiny rivulets or flowing creeks along the way. By the end of the journey, if we look back, we witness the gradual, evolving birth of what we now realize has, drop by drop, choice by choice, become a stream.

A stream is little more than an ongoing fidelity, a consecrated relationship. A never-ending conversation between water, gravity, earth, overcoming obstacles, in a relationship born over time, which gives birth to this astonishing miracle we then call, “stream.” This ancient, elemental rhythm between water and earth creates all the streams that saturate all the seas that cover all the world.

So it is with our lives. The only choice we ever make is one called out from us by a similarly vital inner gravity, an invisible thread that carries our life forward, until our life – this one wild and precious life, meets the world. In all its wonder and promise, in all its ferocity and confusion. Just as it is.

So. We must prepare. We will make choices. If fortune smiles upon us we will make good, honorable, strong choices. But every decision we make, no matter how small, shapes the ground of our being. Each choice helps form the foundation upon which we stand, and live, and act.

This is our field of battle: Here, who we are meets what is in the world. This essential, heroic relationship, this intimate communion between the quiet wisdom of our hearts, and the ways the world emerges, moment by moment, right before our eyes becomes our most reliable tool, our most potent weapon, our true north, a lifelong practice of deep and holy listening for that very next, right thing we will – make no mistake – absolutely, and sooner than we imagine, be required to choose.

Our lives hang in the balance. Surely, goodness and mercy will follow us all.

Valentino’s Pierpaolo Piccioli Talks Creative Freedom and Next Steps for the House

Frank Sinatra put it like this: “I did it my way.”
Pierpaolo Piccioli’s way of life is unconventional, especially for a couturier. And that’s just how he likes it. Valentino’s creative director continues to live in Nettuno, Italy, a beach town 44 miles south of Rome where he was born, where he met his wife, Simona, and where they are raising their three children. Piccioli’s choice seems to mirror his understated and affable manners.
When he’s not traveling around the world, Piccioli rides the train to Rome and back each day like thousands of other commuters, and splits his time between the Italian capital, in the storied Piazza Mignanelli headquarters, Paris and Milan. At the moment of this particular interview, Piccioli has carved out a weekend between a trip from New York to Nettuno, back to New York and then off to Moscow, just to spend the All Saints’ Day holiday with his family at home.
While marked by a medieval hamlet and 14th-century towers, there is an additional claim to fame for Nettuno, or Neptune, the god of the sea in Roman mythology: in World War II, the Allies, led by the U.S. Army, landed on its sandy beaches and those of

There are approximately 3,712 ways for a guy to look stupid during pregnancy – this book’s here to help you avoid all most of them. And here’s your first hint: Focus on what you can be doing for her rather than what’s happening to her. She’s pregnant. She knows that. You know that. And her 152 baby books tell her exactly what she can expect. Your job is to learn what you can do between the stick turning blue and the drive to the delivery room to make the next nine months go as smoothly as possible. That’s where John Pfeiffer steps in. Like any good coach, he’s been through it. He’s dealt with the morning sickness and doctor visits, painting the baby’s nursery and packing the overnight bag, choosing a name, hospital, and the color of the car-seat cover. All the while he remained positive and responsive – there with a “You’re beautiful” when necessary – but assertive during the decision-making process (he didn’t want to wind up with a kid named Percy). And now it’s your turn. She might be having the baby, but you have plenty of responsibilities.

The Automation of Society is Next: How to Survive the Digital Revolution

The Automation of Society is Next: How to Survive the Digital Revolution

The explosion in data volumes, processing power, and Artificial Intelligence, known as the “digital revolution”, has driven our world to a dangerous point. One thing is increasingly clear: We are at a crossroads. We need to make decisions. We must re-invent our future.[This book includes 32 color illustrations.]After the automation of factories and the creation of self-driving cars, the automation of society is next. But there are two kinds of automation: a centralized top-down control of the world, and a distributed control approach supporting local self-organization. Using the power of today’s information systems, governments and companies like Google seem to engage in the first approach. Will they even try to build a “digital God” who knows everything and controls what we do? In fact, governments would spend billions to predict the future of our world and control its path. Given that, every year, we produce as much data as in the entire history of humankind, can we now create a better world? The abundance of data certainly makes it possible to establish an entirely new paradigm for running our societies. Could we even build a data-driven “crystal ball” to predict the future and, given that knowledge implies power, also something like a “magic wand” to optimally rule the world? Will the digital revolution empower a “wise king” or “benevolent dictator”, maybe by means of Artificial Intelligence? In fact, we are much closer to this than you might think. But do we really need large-scale surveillance to understand and manage the increasingly complex systems we have created? Or are we running into a totalitarian nightmare? What alternatives to master our complex world do we have? What about the principles of the “invisible hand” and the “wisdom of the crowd”, which posit that independent decisions made by many people will produce optimal societal outcomes? In the past, these principles have often failed. So, can bottom-up self-organization really work and if so, what do

Why Alaia Baldwin (Yes, Hailey Baldwin’s Big Sister!) Is the Next Model to Watch

Celebrity siblings are taking the fashion industry by storm. First there was Kendall and Kylie Jenner. Then came Gigi and Bella Hadid. Now, Alaia Baldwin is joining younger sis Hailey (not to mention cousin Ireland, talk about good genes!) in pursuing modeling. The 22-year-old recently signed with new modeling agency State Management, which represents girls with strong looks and personalities. She is reportedly moving to New York next week to focus full-time on her new career.

alaia-baldwin

With her freshly-shorn brunette shag—the style of the moment—and kohl-rimmed eyes, Alaia (she couldn’t have a better name for fashion) has a totally different look and energy than her bubbly blonde sister Hailey, 18, who people often mistake for being older than her. But much like Insta-famous Hailey, who boasts 2 million-plus followers, Alaia has some well-known friends including Sailor Brinkley-Cook, who appears alongside her brother Jack in the latest issue of Town & Country – count them as yet another celeb sibling duo.

Other fun facts about Alaia: she’s allergic to gluten, loves juicing, and when she’s bored she “just googles her family”.

Is she genetically blessed or just lucky? When it comes to fashion, having a famous last name clearly helps get you get in the front door, but you’ve got to have the moxie, talent, and work ethic to really “make it.” Do you think Alaia has what it takes?

Michael Moore’s ‘Where To Invade Next’ Deserves The Nonpartisan Audience It Won’t Find

Michael Moore is the 21st century’s most famous documentarian, but not for the same reasons that Ken Burns and Werner Herzog and Errol Morris defined the genre in the previous century. Moore is hyper-aware of the platform he’s carved out for himself. It’s the same platform that got him booed at the Oscars and landed him on Time’s 2005 list of the globe’s most influential people. He galvanizes his core audience — liberals who criticize gun laws and long for universal healthcare — and alienates the non-choir folk who might actually have something to glean from his films.

That was blindingly transparent at Thursday’s opening-night Toronto Film Festival screening of Moore’s new documentary, “Where to Invade Next.” A packed house at the expansive Princess of Wales Theatre not only laughed at the movie’s many witty moments, but gleeful cheers and applause broke out at regular intervals as the film’s interview subjects pointed out the copious examples that prove America, however great, is culturally, politically and sociologically inferior t0 other countries. Sitting among the crowd, and agreeing with the bulk of their endorsements, I wondered whether what should be seen as a relatively nonpartisan doc would register anywhere outside of the admitted echo chamber that exists within the mainstream entertainment media. Will anyone who doesn’t already question America’s military industrial complex see this film? Aren’t proponents of women’s rights already aligned with the points Moore raises? Doesn’t anyone with half a brain think the country’s lack of paid-vacation laws is chintzy?

The answers to these questions, in all likelihood, are resounding affirmatives. That’s not to say that “Where to Invade Next” isn’t good. Its execution, in fact, is quite effective. It’s built on the guise of Moore assuming the Pentagon’s duties by “invading” — aka visiting — other countries to poach ideas that would make America a fairer, more hospitable place. Along the way, he learns that Italy provides citizens with eight weeks (!!!) of paid vacation. In France, school-cafeteria lunches are five-star affairs. Slovenia offers free college education. Portugal has decriminalized all drug use and seen its usage rates plummet. Women’s health clinics in Tunisia are government-funded.

Wouldn’t it be great if America emulated such policies? “Obviously,” the TIFF viewers shouted by way of periodic applause in response to the film’s talking heads, who blanch at the notion that the United States doesn’t offer the same advantages. The fact that “Where to Invade Next” is built with practical alternatives to America’s systemic flaws makes it a stirring work of political theater, and with only a gentle presence from Moore throughout, progressive audiences will continue to howl, just as they did at Thursday’s screening. But watching the movie with such a devout congregation was a living reminder that a Moore documentary serves constituents rather than the overall populace. With peachier projects like “Bowling for Columbine” and “Fahrenheit 9/11,” that was inevitable. With “Where to Invade Next,” which ends on a hopeful note and should be seen as Moore’s least parochial outing yet (there’s only one George W. Bush crack!), it’s just a shame. This isn’t a quote-unquote liberal movie — it’s a look at the decency that exists across the globe but is often undervalued on our home turf.

The Colors You’ll Be Wearing Next Spring: Rose Quartz, Buttercup, and More

Sometimes the world of fashion has a bit of a crystal ball element to it—hello, we’re all talking about spring 2016 now, before we’ve even started this fall! The color pros at Pantone traditionally reside as the seers who are providing our futuristic peek, releasing reports on what colors we’ll be seeing a lot of in the future. They just wrapped up their research and have issued the official word on what’s going to be hot for spring 2016.

pantone-colors-spring-2016-swatches-sized

All colors are not created equally either. Rose Quartz is the number one shade, with 22.55% of designers using it in their spring ’16 collections. Peach Echo, Serenity, Snorkel Blue, and Buttercup round out the rest of the top five. Per the experts, this means we’re all searching for some peace.

“Serenity is a calming color that plays to the whole idea that we know we’re still living in turbulent times,” Pantone Color Institute executive director Leatrice Eiseman told WWD. “Buttercup is all about sunlight, happiness and cheer. This one just speaks to give us a ray of sunshine, something to be hopeful about.”

MORE: The Best Colors to Wear on a Job Interview, First Date, and More

Eiseman is a friend of Glamour—she spent time talking color with us earlier this year, revealing the best shades to wear if you want to make new friends, feel less stressed, or win an argument (though the same colors can mean different things for men and women).

The spring shades revealed today were gathered by examining designers’ spring creations, but it’s a bit more intense when Pantone selects its top hue of the year. It was a deep red marsala for 2015, and we got the scoop on how that happened.

5 Healthy Habits for the Next Digital Generation

The Internet is a mere 25 years old. Think for a minute on how far we’ve come as a society in such a short period of time. Think about how quickly connecting to the Internet has become as casual to our society as the use of electricity. If you want proof of our deep dependency on Wi-Fi, just go to the closest coffee shop, ask them to unplug the Internet for 10 minutes, and watch the panic unfold.

In many cases, our online lives have become habits. When it comes to social networking, the little things we post online have an effect on how we behave towards one another in the real world. While there are still many trolling the Internet, research finds that online trends are creating kinder, gentler users.

Keeping these trends comes with utilizing TECH that does exactly what it spells…

Teach
Exceptional
Character
Habits

Taking into consideration that we are creatures of habit, as we teach our children proper behavior in both their digital and real worlds, here are 5 healthy habits that will create a digital generation worthy of praise. What may seem like no brainers, are things we constantly have to remind ourselves of in such a fast-paced world.

Use positive, forward thinking language.

Eliminate the face-to-face aspect of communication and it becomes difficult to read the sentiment or emotion behind what people are actually trying to communicate. We are emotional creatures and respond more sensitively than we might imagine to undertones of online language. Improper judgments in communication can lead to a lot of problems. So, it needs to become a habit to use clear, positive language in our online interactions. With that it needs to become a habit to become positive thinking human beings.

Take information overload to a level of full understanding.

How many emails are you inundated with on a daily basis? How many articles do you sift through when reading the news online? How much of that intake is negative? The information we take in will translate into the way we begin to behave.

We need to make it a habit to control the amount of information we consume by practicing self and social awareness.

Watch Psychologist Sherry Turkle’s TED Talk: Connected, but alone? which asks us: “As we ask more from technology, do we expect less from each other?”

Pay attention to Emotional Intelligence.

Our emotional intelligence gives us the ability to empathize and connect. In the broad sense of social understanding, they say having strong emotional intelligence can be more important than a high IQ.

We can understand and empathize with the negative information we are taking in, but we should also make it a habit to put more focus on what is good in our world, who is good in our world, and how that good can be spread.

Take time to reflect on connection.

Not your Internet connection, your human connection.

If we take this to an existential level and ask what we are doing on this planet, many might say that we exist for each other. We exist to build beautiful and deep connections with one another. Those relationships and collaboration of ideas are what help push the growth of humanity.

So, as we are glued to our phones and devices, we need to make it a habit to recognize what they exist for. They exist to connect society to information, ideas and, at the end of the day, each other. We connect with each other by respecting each other – acknowledging faults of people and systems while choosing to extract the good out of those same people and systems. As we move forward into a spinning world of increasing data, doing so will help us keep our heads on straight.

Pay attention to the reflections of your character.

The problem with online interaction can be its lack of accountability.

Because of the nature of human life, the Internet might always have trolls. So with the existing darkness in our online social world, we need to practice habits of higher integrity in our actions. We need to turn attention to the true meaning of virtue as often as it is turned towards our digital devices.

Our behavior online affects our behavior in the real world and vice versa. Making an impact starts with small habits of positive action.

“Watch your thoughts, they become your words. Watch your words they become your actions. Watch your actions, they become your character. Watch your character, it becomes your destiny.” — Frank Outlaw

It’s Official: The Next Bachelor Is Ben Higgins!

Ben Higgins Named The Next ‘Bachelor’

Ladies, line up, because there’s a new Bachelor in town … and he’s a fan favorite.

Ben Higgins, who was “Bachelorette” star Kaitlyn Bristowe’s third choice, was named the new star of “The Bachelor” on Monday night’s episode of “After Paradise.”

The 26-year-old was pretty much a shoo-in to star on the upcoming season after Bachelor Nation supported his campaign following his exit from “The Bachelorette” on July 13. Although, Season 11’s Nick Viall did give Higgins a run for his money.

“I think he would be a great choice […] I have a lot of respect for Ben H. He is as sweet as everyone thinks he is,” Viall told HuffPost’s “Here to Make Friends” podcast earlier this month. “I might be giving myself too much credit, but Ben kind of reminds me of when I was 26.”

Higgins seemed to be everyone’s No. 1 choice. Even Amy Schumer called into “After Paradise” to wish him luck. “Find love, and then send some my way, OK?” she said.

The software salesman is excited to begin his journey on the show. “It’s incredible. People like me don’t get opportunities like this,” Higgins told Harrison. “I never thought that this opportunity would be something I could have.”

Higgins will be on “Good Morning America” to chat more about his upcoming season on Tuesday morning.

Donald Trump’s Red Plastic Cups Are Ready For Your Next House Party

For Donald Trump, campaign buttons and yard signage just don’t cut it (though, worry not, he’s monetizing those, too). The 2016 Republican presidential hopeful is getting into crucial housewares, selling “campaign party cups” in his online store. The 16-ounce vessels closely resemble Solo cups, the plastic classics that college kids around the country use for drinking games like beer pong and flip cup. One can’t help but to think a fratty demographic may be the product’s main target.

While any house party host can pick up a 50-pack of Solo cups at Walmart for less than $ 8, a three-pack of Trump’s slogan-stamped cups cost $ 3.

According to the product page, Trump’s cups are “proudly made in USA,” presumably in line with the candidate’s promise to “make America great again!”

For supportive sippers who prefer drinking straight from the can, Trump is also selling American-made koozies to keep beverages cool while screaming his name. A 6-pack of these goes for $ 20.

Trump is not the only 2016 hopeful making the most of the Foodie Generation, offering culinary accessories with which supporters can decorate their kitchens or guzzle beer. Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton has “Chillary” koozies available on her campaign site, as well as cookie cutters, pint glasses, coffee mugs and the “Grillary Clinton Spatula.”

GOP candidate Jeb Bush, too, has turned to the kitchen to earn support. His $ 75 guacamole bowl – er, “Guaca Bowle” — looks like it will last for years to come, no matter who wins this race.

America's Financial Apocalypse: How To Profit From The Next Great Depression

America's Financial Apocalypse: How To Profit From The Next Great Depression

For nearly three decades, America has been gradually losing ground to the developed world in many critical areas. The result is that the American standard of living has been in decline for over two decades, with the middle class having been affected the most. Meanwhile, the rich have gotten wealthier and now America is a nation controlled by corporate America. Hidden by two-income households and open access to credit, declining living standards have gone unnoticed by most Americans. Spending beyond one''s means has become the American way of life and is encouraged by the government. In contrast, saving is almost unheard of in America. As a result, this once power nation has changed from the world''s largest creditor to the world''s largest debtor. Decades of over consumption by Americans can only last so long before a day of reckoning occurs. The deflation of the Internet Bubble resulted in the paper loss of over trillion dollars, yet most people seem to have already forgotten the most scandalous charades in U.S. history by Wall Street and corporate America. And now, as the retirement assets of tens of millions of Americans are in question, an even larger number are caught up in the largest real estate bubble in our history. As we enter the two next decades, 76 million baby boomers will retire, most of them in poverty. Thus, the generation that was responsible for creating the greatest bull market in U.S. history may, through no choice of its own, also be the same group that causes an economic meltdown due to decades of government mismanagement, inadequate planning, and overconsumption. During this same time frame, many expect the global oil production is gradually decline due to whatis known as the peak oil theory. Obviously, this has enormous consequences of its own. Today, America is in the final preparatory stages that will lead to a massive economic meltdown resulting in the Next Great Depression, as over 46 million Americans already have no healthcare insurance, Social Security will be inadequate for the 76 million baby boomers who will retire over the next several years, energy prices will remain high for some time, and for the first time ever, Americans can no longer live with the comfort knowing that they are safe on their own soil. These issues will only get worse and when the appropriate triggers are set off, a domino effect will commence, sending the stock and bond markets into a downward spiral. This book claims to represent the most detailed and exhaustive analysis of America''s current and future economic plight, as well as that of its capital markets. Rather than making bold claims supported by scant data, this book makes use of several hundred figures, tables, and charts, as well as over 700 references to support the premise that a depression is inevitable for America. Finally, the final three chapters address economic and market risks and provide investment guidance and strategy for investors to position themselves to profit before and during America''s next great depression.

Organic Cotton on the other hand is grown in certified pesticide-free and hericide-free soil using organic farming methods, covered in the Global Organic Textiles Standard, perfect for your delicate skin during the 9 month stretch and print that uses no chemicals and does not damage the cotton fibres to ensure a soft feel and makes it less likely to trigger allergies. Organic Cotton is also softer, for your skin, as the fibres have not been damaged by the chemicals. The print on the front of the garments are also non-harmful and no chemicals are used. They are all individually printed to order so you can be sure of a high quality standard. Under GOTS, only garments with 95% or more organic fibres can be labelled as ‘organic’. Fall Denim 2015: Be the First to Wear Next Season’s Biggest Trend

Even if it’s mostly too steamy for wearing jeans right now, there’s no shopping rule that says you can’t buy in advance for future outfits. Add a pair of raw-hem skinnies to your shopping list and start looking now because experts say they’ll be here in a big way come fall.

“Raw cuts and frayed [hems] will definitely be a big trend for fall 2015, carrying through to resort and next spring,” confirmed Brooke Jaffe, Bloomingdale’s fashion director for women’s ready-to-wear and, as such, key holder for items making it onto the department store’s sales floor. “Denim has become a subculture in itself, and designers are exploring new types and working with it in unexpected ways.”

Jaffe says the look became a key trend starting with resort and spring 2015 collections, and street style cemented its popularity. The laid-back finish has been a big component for Mother, who included it in their first-ever delivery back in 2011.

“Those raw, frayed styles were part of our collection since we launched,” explained Tim Kaeding, the brand’s designer and cofounder. “They are so much a part of our brand DNA that they are offered every season in multiple washes, and they are also part of our basics offering. It definitely feels like more and more brands are starting to offer it.”

While chopping off the ends of your own denim is always an option, consider giving the prefab version a try too. Many are treated specially so the frayed edge won’t continue to unravel, changing the look over time.
