Eva Amurri Martino Says Night Nurse Dropped Her Baby, Cracking His Skull

Actress Eva Amurri Martino revealed Sunday that a night nurse accidentally dropped her baby son, causing his skull to fracture.

In a New Year’s Day entry on her blog, Amurri recalled how the incident triggered an emotional tailspin.

Amurri Martino, the daughter of Susan Sarandon, wrote that a few nights before Thanksgiving, the night nurse fell asleep while holding Major, who was born in October, and the child fell, cracking his head against the floor. The impact and screams awakened Amurri and husband Kyle Martino. Major was rushed to the hospital with a fractured skull and bleeding on the brain, she wrote.

“To say these were the most traumatic and anxious two days of my life is an understatement. If you read my post about choosing Homebirth, you know that I have an (irrational) phobia of Hospitals. To be in one for two days under such circumstances was nearly unbearable for me, not to mention how scary and emotional those days were for the entirety of our family.”

While she noted that “MAJOR IS FINE” and “healing well” with MRIs showing no brain damage, she said she has wrestled with guilt.

Amurri Martino, who appeared in several episodes of the sitcom “Undateable,” said she delayed going public with the accident in part because she feared judgment.

“I know that this news might reach many, and of those many there will always be the people who say that this accident was my fault. That if it had been me in there holding him instead of a Night Nurse, that this never would have happened. That I deserve this for allowing my child to be in the care of somebody other than me. Well, let me tell you ―the guilt I bore in the days and weeks after this accident was more intense and more damaging than anything I would wish upon my worst enemy. … And even though I finally made peace with the fact that this freak accident could not have been avoided by me, it has continued to effect [sic] me to my core and in all aspects of my daily life.”

She believes she has “some form of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, possibly linked to some form of Postpartum Depression,” and is going to work with a therapist, she wrote.

She delivered Major, her second child, in an Oct. 19 home birth that she shared on her “Happily Eva After” blog.

Husband Turns Spare Closet Into A Beautiful Vanity For His Nurse Wife

Christmas came early this year for wife and mom of three Kari Koelsch.

After casually mentioning to her husband Todd that she wished she had her own space to get ready in, he decided to convert a spare closet in their Tiffin, Ohio home into a vanity where she could do her makeup. And it’s all kinds of gorgeous:

“I was talking about how we are always rushed when we are getting ready to go somewhere,” Kari told The Huffington Post. “We are very busy and I mentioned it would be nice if I had my own place to get ready. That way none of my things would be in his way.”

The couple, who tied the knot in July 2015, have number of other home improvements they are hoping to tackle. But Todd prioritized the vanity project so it would be complete in time for the holidays and Kari’s birthday, which is also in December.

“My husband always puts me first, which is nice,” she said. “As a nurse, I don’t often get the luxury of putting myself first. So it’s so sweet that my husband does.”

Todd told his wife not to look in the closet until he was finished, but ultimately Kari couldn’t stop herself from sneaking a peek at his progress.

“I was completely shocked when I saw it,” she told HuffPost. “I could not have asked for anything more beautiful and perfect for me.”

On Sunday, Kari’s sister Molly Maksemetz tweeted a before-and-after photo of the vanity closet. The sweet gesture clearly captured the Internet’s heart: the photos were retweeted more than 66,000 times.

According to Kari, Todd is planning to complete the project this weekend. He still needs to add additional lights around the mirror, install another drawer and finish the seat.

“I took those pictures when it wasn’t even done yet,” she said, referring to the images above. “I couldn’t wait! I was so excited.”

Kari told HuffPost that she is a fan of the color pink, sparkles and “anything girly.” So the decor, from the pink and white walls to the gold accents to the crystal light fixture, perfectly suits her taste.

“I’m almost shocked that Todd came up with such a feminine design,” she said. “He is a utility worker that’s usually covered in mud. He’s a big tough guy that wears work boots every day. I’m definitely surprised he thought of pink stripes.”

And while some couples may choose to buy pricey gifts for one another, Kari said it means so much more that her husband makes her presents instead.

“When I look at my vanity I think of all the time he spent designing it and how much love he put into it,” she said. “He told me he didn’t spend very much money on it and most of the things he put in it were on sale. But when I look at it, all I can think of is how priceless it is to me. Money can’t buy the things I have.”

25 Candid Photos That Show Breastfeeding Is Beautiful, Wherever You Nurse

After photos from her Public Breastfeeding Awareness Project (PABP) spread widely across the Internet last August, photographer and mom of four Leilani Rogers is continuing to normalize the sight of nursing and support lactating moms.

In honor of National Breastfeeding Awareness Month this year, Rogers recruited over 70 photographers in the U.S., Australia, Italy, U.K., Venezuela and Canada to take pictures of moms nursing their children in public places like libraries, parks, stadiums and grocery stores. She’s also invited other parents and photographers to share their own breastfeeding images on the project’s Facebook page or on their own social media accounts with the hashtag #PBAP2015.

Rogers was inspired by her own experiences with breastfeeding to launch the Public Breastfeeding Awareness Project in 2014, she told The Huffington Post. Though she overcame challenges with mastitis, bad latches, low supply, plugged ducts, thrush, staph infections and more, she says the one issue she was never able to face was her fear of breastfeeding in public.

“I avoided it at all costs,” the mom said, explaining that she feared stares and judgment from strangers so much that she retreated to her house and made life more difficult by planning everything around each baby’s feeding schedule. “I wish I could go back and tell my former self not to care so much about what other people thought. Not to be ashamed of my body. Not to be self-conscious about openly doing what nature intended.”

Rogers hopes the Public Breastfeeding Awareness Project will empower moms by offering the support and community she wished she had. She also believes it may help break down the struggles breastfeeding moms face, not only in nursing successfully but also in overcoming societal barriers and expectations. ”Society’s support is paramount to a breastfeeding mother’s success,” she said. “Mothers are hiding in their cars, restrooms, sometimes not leaving their homes at all — because they do not want to face the kind of public scrutiny that causes someone to file a complaint with managers and store owners about a woman breastfeeding in a public place.”

By encouraging other moms to participate in PBAP photo sessions or follow the project’s Facebook page, she hopes they will gain the confidence to nurse in public. Rogers would also like her images to reach non-parents. ”My hope is that seeing these images will help desensitize them, or even reprogram their thinking that breasts are sexual and that breastfeeding is an extension of that. It’s not,” she said.

“Perhaps you haven’t witnessed a mother breastfeeding in public before,” she continued. “You’re not sure what you would do if you happened to turn the corner in the grocery store and run right into a mother juggling her life with a breastfeeding child in tow. These images also serve the purpose of positive, gentle exposure.”

Keep scrolling for a sample of the beautiful images of mothers nursing their babies in public from photographers across the globe.

4-Year-Old Cancer Patient ‘Marries’ Her Favorite Nurse

Chemotherapy treatments aren’t something most people look forward to.

But thanks to a nurse by the name of Matt Hickling, 4-year-old Abby Sayles doesn’t seem to mind them. She especially looked forward to her session last Thursday, when, thanks to the hospital staff at the Albany Medical Center, she ”married” Hickling in an impromptu wedding:

Video of the lighthearted ceremony, shared on the Albany Medical Center’s Facebook page, shows Abby entering the hospital room along with a handful of nurses who served as bridesmaids.

A local florist donated a bouquet, corsages and a boutonniere for the occasion, reports the Albany Times Union, along with a puppy-shaped basket of flowers.

While the “groom” didn’t have a suit for the occasion, he did sport the next best thing: a tuxedo t-shirt.

“Our patient shyly asked me to marry her,” Hickling recalled in a post on his Facebook page. “I didn’t hesitate to say yes, I got a HUGE hug and we sealed the deal with ring pops being placed on our fingers!”

“So today I got to help make a 4 year old leukemia patient’s ‘wedding’ to her favorite nurse happen at the Melodies Center for Childhood Cancers at [Albany Medical Center],” one of the nurses, Lori Ciafardoni, wrote on Facebook.

“Thanks to Scott Wright the team at the Enchanted Garden for donating your time and amazing flowers and to everyone at AMC that helped pull this together in less than 24 hours.”

“You people are amazing,” she added. “THIS is why we go into nursing.”

‘Chronic’ at Cannes: Tim Roth As a Depressed Male Hospice Nurse

Tim Roth gives an outstanding performance in Michel Franco’s new film Chronic, which just premiered at Cannes, as a male nurse who bizarrely goes beyond the call of duty to care for his dying patients. The film follows him as he takes care first of one patient (until the funeral), and then another — and then another — each time scrupulously washing the patient’s back, with dedicated strokes, or encouraging him or her to speak about their lives. The nurse even goes so far as to buy an architecture book for one of his crotchety patients (an architect), and to visit one of the homes he designed. What is odd is that his care for his patients is absolutely deadpan — and he, for an unfathomable reason, deeply depressed.

Tim Roth in person — whom I saw joking at poolside with a hotel woman who called to him from her balcony — is quite opposite from the role he plays. Lively, funny (“I love you too!” he called up to the woman at the balcony) and jocular. In the film, he is brooding, with his body tensed up like that of a former high school wrestler, who never got out of the pose. At the press conference, in fact, the actor remarked that: “For this role, I stripped myself bare. I played the nurse very quiet. I didn’t want to distract from him, so I tried to keep myself low.”

2015-05-23-1432413661-4729561-zRothpressconference.jpg

Chronic is a riveting film — because of Roth — and may very well win an award tomorrow night. But it is tough to watch, just as it is tough to be at the hospital bedside of a patient in chronic pain (one after another). There is no joy in the movie, and very little warmth. The other characters in the film (mostly family members of the patients) have little affect: Perhaps because they are dealing with a loved one’s chronic illness (as the director noted at the press conference), but more likely because the director has chosen to put the spotlight on how estranged we human beings are from each other. The nurse, in his strange dense way, is the most “human” character. The others, in contrast, seem cold, rushed, or indifferent, and speak to each other in monotone.

A sense of mystery is what propels the story: Something traumatic happened in this nurse’s past that spurs him in his overzealous activity. The mystery works: We are gripped to the “cold” story before us, one that (plot spoiler) ends up as icy as it begins.

I went to meet the young Mexican director, Michel Franco, to ask him why he created such a disturbingly bleak universe.

2015-05-23-1432411439-5524679-xxxBESTMichelFranco.jpg

Why did you make a film in which humans seem not to care about each other? Is this how you see people?

I should not be very pessimistic as in my personal life I am lucky with my friends and family. My family came all the way from Mexico to be here with me. Nevertheless, I am intrigued by how we can be well-educated and civilized, and still have trouble communicating. Humans are complicated; we always make mistakes with each other. It is the same pessimistic view that you will find in my other films.

Almost all of the relationships in the film are cold, except for the one at the end, with Tim Roth and the cancer patient “Martha.” Can you comment on Martha?

Oh yes, Martha. It’s true they end up being close. Still, I don’t know if Martha is manipulating him. We don’t know if from the very beginning, she is trying to manipulate him.

Really! I didn’t see her this way.

It’s not clear. I will have to see it again and tell you what I think of Martha. Every time I see the film I think differently about Martha. I am suspicious of people’s motives. We all have our worries, and our minds are complicated, and even if we love each other, we harm each other…

Some viewers will be disappointed that this film has no arc of triumph, no evolution. In a conventional film, a protagonist who begins a film depressed will evolve and, by film’s end, have a surprising realization or recovery.

My film is close to real life, in that life rarely has that arc where everything changes and is better at the end. I like movies that do not solve the conflict, because when the conflict is solved, it satisfies the spectator and all is finished, forgotten in an hour. But if the conflict is not solved, like in my film, you are forced to keep thinking about it. Usually in a film, the audience is told from the beginning: Be prepared for the final [triumphant] end. I just shot my film in a way I like: subtle. I don’t give things to the audience. I feel like the audience is tired with being disrespected.

You say life has no arcs. Do you really believe that?

When my professional life is going well, I am happy, and then I am down again. Yes, I have those kinds of professional arcs.

What about non-professional arcs? How about going through an emotional upset or loss, and then changing through it, or achieving some kind of resolution? This is a way many people approach tragedies…

I would say no, that does not happen. Most things you have to accept them and move on, if they are really bad. You don’t change them and it is better to accept and move on. These people who believe in change are in therapy for ten years or always reading a book about how to be happy, but then they fall into another problem. I am more simple. As long as there is no trouble in my life, I focus on work.

I am going to guess that you are an atheist: and think there is nothing after death.

Right. I do think there is nothing after life. Death is scary. It is a horrible thought, pessimistic, but it is good to embrace that thought because if you accept it, it makes you make the most of your life.

One critique of your film: The father/daughter relationship is not quite believable. The Tim Roth character sees his daughter after many years of absence, and she just casually welcomes him back with a, “Nice to see you!”

True, but I wanted to make the father-daughter story as small as possible. With the daughter, I just wanted to make a point that the nurse is welcomed back easily by his [estranged] family, so even that cannot explain his depression. The real problem for him is that he cannot cope with life; it’s not a matter of external factors.

Where did you get the idea for your story?

My grandmother got sick in 2010, and she was tied to a bed for several months before she passed away. I was very moved by the angel who took care of her. I asked this nurse, Beatrice, how many years she had been doing this! The work kept her down. She was depressed. Yet, she said she liked her work. She was always thinking about her patients. Nurses are close to certain matters that we try to escape; they are brave and they do it. My film is a character study.

The reason I chose to make it a male nurse is because of Tim Roth. I won the Certain Regard with my film After Lucia a couple years ago [2012]. Tim Roth was on the jury. He came up to me after the awards ceremony and said, “Let’s work together!” I told him I was making a film about a nurse and he said, “If you make her a male, I’ll be that nurse!” And so I did.

Does the fact that you are from Mexico — a very unsettled place right now — influence your filmmaking and choice of subjects?

Mexico has always been a very complicated society, not just now. It is a really troubled country [with corruption etc.] which is why we have good film directors — which is why Greece has interesting film directors now. I like chaos. My first movie really comes out of that Mexican context; my second film has some of it. The third was shot in the streets of Mexico, with homeless people. My beginnings were tied to Mexican reality, but now I am growing out of it, and becoming more personal.

You are a Jewish Mexican, and as you tell me, your mother is Israeli. Do you feel connected to your Jewish roots?

Culturally, I do (laughs.) Perhaps I have some of the pessimism.

Surgery – How to Rehearse Before You See the Nurse A Practical Guide to an Easier Time Do you need to go ‘under the knife’ for any reason? Are you anticipating an extended or short-term hospital visit? Do you feel uncertain, overwhelmed, or ill prepared? If so, you will need this complete ‘survival kit’ to prepare for surgery, your hospital stay, and recuperation at home. “Nurse Jackie” Is At Its Most Dramatic This Season

TV Review Jackie K Cooper
“Nurse Jackie” (SHOWTIME)

“Nurse Jackie” is starting its sixth season and this year the drama is out in full force. At times it is almost operatic in its passion and its heartbreak. Edie Falco and Merritt Weaver continue to head a cast that brings every nuance of their characters’ personalities to the fore. This is certainly a season of change and with change comes complications. Viewers had best be ready for anything and everything to happen.

As the season opens Jackie Peyton (Falco) is still a nurse, still a divorced mother of two daughters, and still an addict. She has fallen off the wagon big time and she doesn’t have any intention of getting clean again anytime soon. Her ex-husband Kevin (Dominic Fusco), her new policeman boyfriend Frank (Adam Ferrara), and all of her co-workers think she is clean and sober. Jackie plans to keep them in the dark so she can have a respectful life and a high one too.

It is amazing to watch Falco in this role. She gives a variety of insights into Jackie. We see Jackie the loving mother, loyal friend, dedicated nurse and indulgent addict. All of these facets blend into who she is. Only an actress as talented as Falco could make it all believable. She works her magic in every scene and is not afraid to make Jackie quite unlikeable.

Working side by side with her is Weaver, an actress of high talent as well. Her character of Zoe is more subtle in her transformation. Over the years Weaver has worked diligently to make her a stronger person, one who has grown into her job and into her own personhood. Weaver portrays these strengths but also lets Zoe still have her moments of insecurity. This makes for a unique performance that perfectly supplements Falco’s.

There are so many stunning and emotional moments this season that you dare not miss a single episode. We get some of the series’ highest highs and lowest lows. This year it is all about the drama so forget any idea of this being a comedy. The comedy is incidental but the drama is everywhere you turn.

When Falco was finished with “The Sopranos” it was thought she could never find another role as good as Carmella. Well she did and to may viewers Jackie is a much more intriguing character than Carmella ever was. And this time the series is centered on Falco as the star.

“Nurse Jackie” airs on SHOWTIME every Sunday at 9PM. Mark it down on your calendars or set your Tivos. Whatever you have to do, don’t miss a single episode. This is television viewing of the highest caliber.
