Mel Odom to Unveil ‘Gorgeous’ Exhibition and Discuss His Career With Edmund White

HELLO GORGEOUS: Mel Odom is having a New York moment, but it took 40 years of work to get there.
On Friday, his solo show “Gorgeous” will bow at the Daniel Cooney gallery. The artist will sit down with the novelist Edmund White on Saturday afternoon to discuss his career. Over the years Odom has done his share of covers, such as White’s “Forgetting Elena,” among others. Guests at this weekend’s talk will learn of his many pursuits — the most recent of which was a fashion collaboration with the London-based Qasimi men’s wear label.
The multidisciplnary talent Odom has three books to his own name. In 1991, he created his own doll “Gene Marshall,” based on a fictitious film actor from the Forties. More than one million dolls have been sold since it debuted at the 1995 Toy Fair, Odom said. Born in Richmond, and raised in the tiny tobacco town of Ahoskie, N.C., Odom earned his bachelor of fine arts degree in fashion illustration from Virginia Commonwealth University. After fine-tuning his artistry in London, he returned to his hometown before relocating to New York in 1975. Playboy, Time, The New York Times Magazine and Rolling Stone are among the magazines

Lamar Odom Breaks Silence On Las Vegas Brothel Night

Lamar Odom might not officially be connected to the Kardashian family tree any longer, but he apparently picked up a few things from time spent in Calabasas. Lesson one? How to score a splashy cover story and rehabilitate your image.

The former Los Angeles Lakers star covers the latest issue of Us Weekly in his first official interview since he was found unconscious in a Nevada brothel back in October 2015. Odom suffered “12 strokes and two heart attacks” after he was discovered and regained consciousness after a four-day coma.

A year after the incident, Odom checked himself back into rehab at San Diego’s Casa Palmera facility and completed his treatment this past January. Now, he’s ready to break his silence about the night he collapsed, his marriage to Khloe Karadashian and where he went off track.

“I was home by myself. Bored. I wanted to get out and have a good time,” Odom recalled of the fateful night. “Looking back, I might have had a drink to get the mood started, but was I drunk or on drugs? Not at all. I remember lying in bed. Two women were in bed and then I fell asleep. That’s all. When I woke up four days later, I was trying to pull the tubes out of my mouth.”

At the time, Odom’s representatives denied that the basketball star was on drugs, except for a taking Viagra-like herbal supplement. However, drugs—  cocaine, more specifically — did play a role in the destruction of his marriage to Kardashian and career as a professional athlete.

“I was hiding it for a while, but then I got frustrated and was like, f**k it,” Odom said of his drug use. “Around two years before we split up [in 2011], I was in the man cave [Khloe] had made for me and she caught me. She was disappointed. So was I. The sad thing about it is, I don’t know if I was disappointed because I was actually doing the drug or because she caught me. She knew I was doing cocaine the whole time after that. It was my drug of choice. I’m not going to say she accepted it because that would be the wrong word. Tolerated would be a better word.”

After Kardashian filed for divorce in 2013, Odom moved out of their Calabasas mansion and into an apartment where he “turned the drug use up to another level” with his friend Jamie Sangouthai, who died due to drug-related causes in 2015.

Despite the deception and infidelity, Karadashian stood by Odom through his darkest times and was the first face he saw when he awoke from the coma. That is, until he seemingly fell off the wagon again, prompting the reality star to officially sign their divorce papers with Odom and make it official.

“If there is one thing I regret when I was married, it was having multiple affairs with different women,” Odom said. “That wasn’t the stand-up thing to do. I wish I could have kept my d**k in my pants.”

Now Odom is clean and sober and at work on an autobiography and docuseries.

“Living sober, meaning no drugs, is a great feeling. Being in the moment is important — how you react, respond, create,” he said. “If I would have done coke last night, you would have gotten some dickhead here trying to get out of here fast. But you’re getting Lamar now.”

Lamar Odom Celebrates the New Year with Kids By His Side in First Instagram Post Since Entering Rehab

Lamar Odom is ending 2016 on the right note.

The former NBA star checked himself into a 30-day rehab program earlier this month to address the demons that led to his near-fatal overdose. And while he reportedly intends to be there when the ball drops, it appears he spent some time during the final hours of the year with the ones he loves most.

Odom, 37, posted a photo of him and two of his kids, Destiny Odom and Lamar Odom Jr., to Instagram Saturday morning — the three of them smiling in the sweet family photo.

“No better way to end 2016 than with my two favorite people,” he wrote, hashtagging the shot “#TheOdoms” and “#RichSoil.”

It was Lamar’s first Instagram post in nearly seven months.

In October 2015, Odom suffered a near-fatal overdose and was found unconscious at a Nevada brothel. PEOPLE confirmed that cocaine and opiates were in his system when he was admitted for emergency treatment and lapsed into a four-day coma at Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas.

Months later, in the summer of 2016, he was often spotted out at bars and strip clubs while spending time back home in New York City.

He’d been keeping a low profile since then, returning to Los Angeles this fall. The move was a positive choice for Odom, according to sources who told PEOPLE it was “a great thing” for him to be away “from the negative influences in New York.”

Also a positive choice? Checking into the substance abuse program — something another insider told PEOPLE was Lamar’s choice.

“This is a precautionary measure,” the source said, explaining that Odom was clean and not abusing drugs when he went in.

While in rehab, Odom’s protracted divorce from estranged ex-wife Khloé Kardashian, 32, was finalized. The couple tied the knot on national TV in September 2009, but the marriage fell apart after Odom’s cheating scandal and drug relapse.

Kardashian first filed for divorce in 2013. The stars finally both signed divorce papers in July 2015 — but a few months later, Kardashian called off their divorce following Odom’s overdose. She reinitiated divorce proceedings in May.

“He wants to stay clear and focused,” the source added. “With the divorce from Khloé being finalized and the holidays coming up, he doesn’t want to slip up. He’s trying to take care of himself. He really wants to be better. His friends and family encouraged him to go in and he agreed and made the decision.”

“’s being very adult and mature and just wants to be a great father and brother, a better friend,” another source told PEOPLE. “The goal is for him to be inside during Christmas and New Years. Crazy things happen during those times. There’s been amazing reports from the doctors thus far. He’s doing extraordinary well, he’s in great spirits.”

In January, Odom is expected to appear on The Doctors for his first sit-down interview since rehab. No air date for the program has been set yet.

A source also told PEOPLE that the star is also planning on filming a reality show about his road to recovery.
