Cards on the table: I love Dynasty Warriors. I love its repetitive, therapeutic approach to action. I love that it claims to represent Chinese history, but still throws in people with magical powers or who use wolves’ heads as weapons. I love that its solution to getting bored of a character is to include 80 more to try. God, I love Dynasty Warriors.
Its spin-offs, however, are another story. With a few exceptions, the licensed side-series Koei Tecmo regularly creates have consistently disappointed, whether that’s because they’ve felt less well thought-out, dropped a core idea, or simply lacked the charm of developer Omega Force’s key franchise.
A fundamental concern for others in our individual and community lives would go a long way in making the world the better place we so passionately dreamt of. -Nelson Mandela
Nelson Mandela Day was celebrated around the world on July 18th. It is a day to remember the greatness of a man who dedicated his life to helping the world understand democracy, freedom, equality, diversity, reconciliation, and respect.
Recently, I had the opportunity to connect with, Leeya Mehta, She was a child when Nelson Mandela was released from prison in 1989 after serving his 27-year sentence.
The movement for a democratic South Africa was felt greatly in India whose own independence was achieved just 15 years before Mandela’s sentence began. Leeya Mehta’s school invited leaders of the ANC to come talk to the children. Mehta felt rooted in a culture of nonviolent resistance for change, surrounded by the energy of a new India, and a witness to its diverse cultural and religious traditions.
After earning a Master’s in economics and politics from Oxford University she traveled throughout the world eventually settling in Washington, DC. She was recently nominated for a Pushcart Prize for her poem, “The Abduction,” published by the Beloit Poetry Journal.
Here she shares her reflections as a writer and her hopes to pay homage to the diverse cultures, religions, social movements, countries and the people who weave their complexities and contradictions, along with her own, through her poems and essays.

When I got word of who Polyvore had unveiled as its most popular celebrity, I was surprised. I was expecting a Kendall Jenner, maybe a Lauren Conrad, but instead, it was Selena Gomez. The actress/popstar had her image used in over 50,000 sets (meaning those outfit collages the site’s known for)—impressive indeed. With a lot of running around town and hanging with friends, her looks are typically easier to recreate and copy than a celeb like Kim Kardashian, whose sexy-minimalist-secretary combos would work for about zero situations in my life.
Here are two of the year’s five most popular sets featuring Selena and they both prove my point—casual, trendy outfits that you could likely put together with items you already have in your closet.
Some other notable names that made the list? Ariana Grande, Kylie Jenner, and Kim Kardashian were in the number two, three, and four spots. The most popular brands were Topshop, H&M, and Forever 21, in that order, which also makes sense since they’re affordable and, again, likely already stuff you own. Skinny jeans took first place among items and One Direction from musicians.
Are you surprised by any of those findings? A fan of Selena’s style?
