Oliver Peoples Fetes ‘California as We See It’ With Lisa Eisner

A clutch of bespectacled Angelenos joined luxury eyewear brand Oliver Peoples on Thursday to fete the launch of the Assouline tome “California as We See It.” Cohosted by photographer and Los Angeles style arbiter Lisa Eisner, who penned the book’s foreword, the party drew Shaun Ross, Levi Dylan, William Peltz, Stormi Henley, Markus Molinari, Brad Elterman, Lorenza Izzo, Ivan Olita and Tasya van Ree, along with Oliver Peoples chief executive officer Rocco Basilico and creative director Giampiero Tagliaferri.
“Do you remember their first shop?” asked Eisner of the Sunset Plaza store a few blocks down the street. “It was right in the middle of all this history — George Hurrell’s studio, Billy Haines’ showroom, Adrian’s shop. Then there were all the rock clubs like The Whiskey a Go Go and The Roxy.” She also pointed out the pioneering retailer Charles Gallay — the first boutique in the U.S. to carry Azzedine Alaïa — and the location used for the apartment of Richard Gere’s character in “American Gigolo.”
“That’s sort of the area in which we played, and when I bought my first pair of Oliver Peoples in the Eighties, we were like this clique,” she said. Eisner has also photographed several campaigns

All Grown Up! PEOPLE’s Guide-Dog-in-Training Murphy Has Graduated

PEOPLE started following Murphy on his journey to guide dog greatness when he was just a few weeks old and learning the basics.

Now a full-grown adult with months of extensive, specialized training behind him, Murphy graduated on Aug. 18 from his program at Guiding Eyes for the Blind.

Graduating for Murphy didn’t just include a ceremony: the yellow Labrador also got to start doing the job he has been working toward, and move into his forever home.

Murphy’s human partner is Linda Kay of Tacoma, Washington, and Murphy is her second guide dog. According to Guiding Eyes for the Blind, when Kay first met Murphy on “dog day,” she said her “heart and soul had been healed from having said goodbye to Campbell,” her first guide dog.

Even though they weren’t placed together that long ago, Kay and Murphy have already formed a deep bond and appreciation for one another.

“He is very funny and comical. It’s all about Murphy when he’s with his toys, but when he puts the harness on he is ‘Mr. Business.’ He is all about the business of keeping me safe,” Kay said of Murphy.

RELATED: Meet Murphy, PEOPLE Magazine’s Guide Dog in Training!

Along with getting an amazing companion, Kay also gets independence by having a guide dog again. No longer does she have to depend on “Slim,” her cane, to get around; now she walks with more confidence with a dog by her side.

“I’m looking forward to life going back to normal. I do a lot of volunteer work and work at my church. I am a high-ranking belt in karate (two more belts until black, and I’ve even taught Murphy to bow!). I live a very busy life and a very giving life. I’m very active in my blind knitting group,” Kay shared. “We knit Afghans for the vets, hats for the homeless, and several other projects for local organizations.”

Sounds like Murphy has a pretty fun and important future ahead of him.

To learn more about the training Murphy went through to become a guide dog, and the other amazing work Guiding Eyes for the Blind does to assist the visually impaired, visit the non-profit’s website.

PEOPLE’s Call to Action: Contact Congress to Ask What Is Being Done to Stop the Epidemic of Gun Violence

On Friday, just as the school day was just getting underway, a gunman opened fire inside Santa Fe High School in Texas, killing 10 and wounding 13.

Eight students and two teachers were killed, leaving their loved ones grieving the loss of “extraordinary” lives.

The suspected shooter, a 17-year-old student, had planned to kill himself after the massacre but lost his nerve and surrendered instead, authorities said.

The attack, which began around 7:30 a.m., came just months after a mass shooting at a high school in Parkland, Florida, killed 17 people — and, less than a year before that, a mass shooter at a concert in Las Vegas killed 58. Weeks after the Vegas massacre, a gunman fatally shot 25 people, including a pregnant woman, at a church in Sutherland Springs, Texas.

Speaking to reporters on Friday afternoon, surrounded by law enforcement and other politicians, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott called it “the worst disaster ever to strike this community.”

“We need to do more than just pray for the victims and their families,” Abbott said. “It’s time in Texas that we take action to step up and make sure this tragedy is never repeated ever again in the history of the state.”

To help you make your voice heard and to let your representatives know you will vote on the issue of sensible gun legislation, PEOPLE is once again releasing its Call to Action.

Here is the contact information for every single voting member of Congress. There are no easy solutions to gun violence, but Washington needs to know that doing nothing is not an option anymore.

Jessica Alba, Rebecca Gayheart Attend Oliver Peoples’ 30th-Anniversary Bash

It’s been 30 years since Oliver Peoples burst onto the California eyewear scene, and the Los Angeles-based luxury brand, now owned by Luxottica, celebrated the milestone with a party at Chateau Marmont’s Bungalow One last weekend that drew Jessica Alba, Rebecca Gayheart and Brandon Thomas Lee, plus the faces of its latest campaign lensed by Peter Lindbergh, Levi Dylan and Monika Jagaciak.
“When conceptualizing the campaign and story surrounding this milestone year for Oliver Peoples, my mind went back to the beginning. When Oliver Peoples was founded in 1987, the brand challenged the ostentatious eyewear trends of the era with its decidedly classic aesthetic. This was around the same time Peter Lindbergh was rising on the scene and changing fashion’s view of beauty through his raw and minimalist photography. I’ve been a fan of Peter’s work since those early years and jumped at the chance to work with him for Oliver Peoples’ 30th anniversary campaign,” said OP creative director Giampiero Tagliaferri.
Guests got a preview of the black-and-white campaign images, which are set to break this week.
“Peter has the magic touch that you experience through the whole process, from his image selection to watching him work on set, he is truly one

Alec Baldwin’s Donald Trump Takes His Grievances To ‘The People’s Court’ On ‘SNL’

After a federal appeals court dealt a major blow to President Donald Trump’s controversial travel ban on Thursday, the commander-in-chief angrily tweeted that he would “SEE YOU IN COURT”.

Apparently, he meant it.

On last night’s ‘Saturday Night Live,’ host Alec Baldwin’s version of Trump took the three 9th Circuit Court judges who ruled against his executive order to a different judicial venue: “The People’s Court.”

“Mr. Trump, you understand this is a TV court, right?” asks the judge, played by Cecily Strong. “That’s okay. I’m a TV president,” says the spoofed president.

Baldwin’s Trump demands a reinstatement of his travel ban, and in true TV court style, $ 725 in compensation from the judges who wronged him. He even brings in a star character witness: “Someone who’s known me for years, he’s family, he’s an incredible person with impeccable credentials. Mr. Vladimir Putin.”

A shirtless Putin, played once again by Beck Bennett, has nothing but praise for Trump. “This man is a great friend. He’s my little American Happy Meal. He’d do anything for you. Go against his own country just to make you happy,” explains the fictionalized Russian president.

But even on “The People’s Court”, things don’t turn out well for Trump. And after yet another embarrassing loss, Strong’s judge lays out a sentiment many people these days can relate to: “Let me just say, you’re doing too much. Okay? I want one day without a CNN alert that scares the hell out of me!”

5 Kids Dressed Better Than All The Adults At The People’s Choice Awards

At the People’s Choice Awards in Los Angeles Wednesday night, the kids were our choice. They dressed better than just about every single grownup in attendance.

There was some good in the adult red carpet: Forty-seven-year-old Gwen Stefani was on hand in an adorable Reem Acra two-piece to remind us all she’s aging in reverse. Jennifer Lopez, who is also 47 and somehow appearing more youthful all the time, looked lovely in a gown by the same designer. “This is Us” star Chrissy Metz gets an honorable mention, too, for looking gorgeous in a custom Eloquii gown.

Other than that, though, the looks were a little scattered. We’re not here to name names, but let’s just say that the handful of kids, in their floral gowns and smart suits, looked better than the rest of the red carpet combined (ahem, “Fuller House” cast).

Check out the good, the bad and the adorable below.

TOP NEW YEAR’S RESOLU-SHUNS: The People’s Guide.

2017 is finally here. Thank goodness 2016 is finally over. No matter who you supported, the election was brutal, scandalous and seemed to consume any and all news coverage in 2016. The only time we seemed to get a break from it was when yet another celebrity was taken from us. It just seemed like a train wreck of endless tragedy up until the very end of the year. Speaking of celebrities-has anyone checked on Betty White and Keith Richards? We need an update on their vitals-STAT!

In light of a ridiculously tough year in 2016 and a new incoming administration, I think it might be time to lighten up a little and give ourselves a little bit of a break.

We all love Christmas, but some of us can tend to get a little carried away with it. Some of our traditions may not make the most sense, but it is what it is:

First thing we need to do is get those holiday decorations down. If you have a family to help, a hearty team effort can get the job done fairly quickly. If you live alone, your 17 cats staring at you condescendingly will inspire you eventually to remove the festive fodder from your residence. Of course, some of us may need to rid ourselves of more than a dead tree…

Of course, lighter fluid and a match will always do the trick if you don’t mind living in your car until the insurance pays. I don’t recommend this, but to each his own.

For some, removing decorations immediately after the holidays may be a more difficult task than for the rest of us.

Now that the decorations are out of the way or at least unplugged if you leave them up all year, let’s move on to those onerous New Year’s Resolutions. This year, we need some positivity so let’s set some attainable goals.

1) NO GOALS: One sure fire way to avoid failing our New Year’s Resolutions is by not setting any. This is my favorite way to go about it, but unfortunately it leaves us nothing to brag about on Facebook. Social Media showmanship and validation from people that barely care about us seems all the rage these days, so let’s set some doable targets:

2) SURVIVAL GOALS: I think one of the greatest achievements we can accomplish in 2017 is to simply survive it. Lots of folks didn’t make it through 2016, so in 2017 survival seems like a rational goal. Of course, you could just stay in bed and never go outside. Staying indoors while limiting my interactions with people is my favorite way to survive 2017 but there’s that money thing, mean people that want rent-oh, and family. Whatever you do, if you can still fog a mirror by January 1, 2018-you’re winning!

3) HEALTH GOALS: Some of us like to set health goals. Your health is important, but let’s not get carried away.

For me, a gym membership is just a great way to pay a fat tax. I take my walk of shame once a year to renew my membership and pick up my new membership card which I flash to the do-gooders throughout the year to let them know that I may be tubby, but I’m trying. You may want to take a look at some of these places people are calling ‘gyms’ now. I’ve found a few ‘gyms’ that offer free wifi, free coffee, free cable and even pizza and bagels on certain days for as little as $ 10.00 a month! Seriously people? Is this a resort or a gym? That sounds like a health plan I can live with! This is my type of workout:

The only negative to a gym membership is the cost and that you’ll have to deal with the die hards that actually use the equipment-bless their hearts. Other than dealing with the crazy folks that are actually sweating in the gym, it’s really not a bad deal!
If you are not a people person or the cost of the gym membership is too much, you can always buy a Fitbit…all the cool kids are doing it! For me a Fitbit is just a measure of disappointment because I can barely walk 10,000 steps in a week-let alone a day. Don’t worry though, where there’s a will-there’s a way:

Going on a diet can be a good thing and a lot of people try it. Of course there are a plethora of fads to try, so enjoy torturing yourself with these less than civil methods. I love the names they give these diets- ‘South Beach’, ‘Whole 30’ or the ‘Paleo’ Diet. I think it’s interesting to note there are no Paleolithic people alive today, so the diet they were on must not have been too fantastic. I’m pretty sure a Paleolithic Neanderthal alive today would eat a steady stream of doughnuts, cupcakes & pie-so yeah, I’ll try your silly diet. Maybe I’ll consider this diet more the next time I want to wear a burlap sack, grunt, poop in the woods, start a fire with sticks, drag people around by their hair after clubbing them to death and live a miserable life in general. After all, the most effective diet is death.

4) SCREEN GOALS: Many people want to spend less time in front of computer screens and more time outside. All I have to say about that is HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Have you seen outside recently? There are people out there! It’s scary! Seriously, this is a great goal and I think you could accomplish this for 24 hours…maybe if you’re sleeping for least 12 of those 24 hours.

Either way, good luck with staying off your phone. If you’re in denial and think it’s still possible, you’re probably the one that calls instead of texts and leaves lengthy voicemail messages-it’s ok though, we still love you. The rest of us want to set attainable goals, and this clearly is not attainable.

5) RELATIONSHIP GOALS: Some folks like to set their dating goals rather high.

Congrats if you can attain those lofty ambitions, but I’d recommend something more reasonable. For starters, let’s try to find somewhere to ring in the New Year instead of our mother’s basement this time around….

Maybe you can meet some new people to talk with that have different opinions than the cats in your mom’s basement. Who knows-whether it’s you or the liquid courage talking, your chances of finding a date increase exponentially when you’re not alone in a basement. If you’re not looking for a serious relationship, it’s always nice to have some friends other than a herd of feral, feisty felines. This may require putting your phone down and speaking to a real life human every once in a while. I know, I know-it’s a dreadful thought, but eventually you might get enough friends to establish a squad who would love to sit in the basement and stare at their phones in silence with you. Wherever you go, just check before you go to make sure they have the following things to ensure you’ll have a good time:

A. Free WiFi
B. Cheetos
C. Your favorite beverage
D. A charger for your phone
E. A dog to pet and chill with because sometimes people are stupid

Whatever you decide to do, please have a safe and Happy New Year! Love others, put a smile on that face and give 2017 all you’ve got!

Celebratory Pro Tip: If you think you may not be able to control your intake of ‘festivities’, it would probably be a good idea to leave the cameras at home…

Despicable Fat-Shaming Campaign Aims To Reveal People’s ‘#ThinnerBeauty’

“No shaming please. No hate speech please.”

That’s what was written in the About section in a new “skinny acceptance” campaign called Project Harpoon before it was taken down from Facebook. The “campaign” photoshops images of plus-size women to make them look skinnier.

And yes, it’s wildly problematic.

The creators of Project Harpoon describe the project on Instagram as a “movement” that asks people to support “being in shape and not feeding into obesity.” The images include plus-size celebrities, models and everyday people.

It’s fat-shaming at its ugliest.

Under the misguided mission that the project is showing everyone’s “#ThinnerBeauty,” Project Harpoon’s now-defunct Facebook page described the campaign as being “dedicated to showing both sides of modern day beauty.”

“In current societal fashion, a recent trending surge of ‘pro-obesity’ and ‘fat acceptance’ have paved the way for many people to renounce exercise and personal healthcare in general,” the page’s description read. “The page aims to only show that being skinny is okay as well! Skinny shaming is not okay.”

(Quick reminder: No one is shaming skinny people by highlighting fat or plus-size bodies. We highlight fat and plus-size bodies because they’re rarely represented in pop-culture and are stigmatized in real life.)

Before the campaign’s account was removed from Instagram, the photoshopped posts included horrible captions beneath each image.

“From runaway freight train to fashion week NYC runway model, she’s got some potential,” one caption read beneath an image of a plus-size woman on a runway next to the same image photoshopped to make the woman look much slimmer.

Another Instagram post featured a photoshopped image of a plus-size woman wearing a feminist t-shirt, with the caption: “If you’re a feminist, you should at least be in shape so you can attend the protests, not get stuck in the parking garage!”

The campaign was originally discovered on Facebook on Aug. 19, but it looks like both Facebook and Instagram have removed the project’s page. Before being removed from the two platforms, Project Harpoon had over 2,500 Instagram followers and had gained momentum on Facebook after Facebook Newswire posted it on their page.

Instagram confirmed to The Huffington Post UK that Project Harpoon’s account was disabled for violating their bullying policy.

After being kicked off the other two social media platforms, Project Harpoon moved to Twitter and Reddit to photoshop images of women (and a few men) without their permission

The images include celebrities such as Melissa McCarthy, Rebel Wilson, Meghan Trainor and plus-size models Tess Holliday and Ashley Graham.

Many people have criticized the project as peak fat-shaming and blatantly offensive. Among those horrified by the project is plus-size model and outspoken body love activist Tess Holliday who’s own images were wrongfully photoshopped.

“It’s abominable that this [Facebook page] is using my image without permission to promote themselves,” Holliday told E! News. “This kind of hit piece is exactly why I started #EffYourBeautyStandards. I am asking my followers to boycott this [page] and any others like it. Loving yourself is the most powerful message we all need to stand behind.”

We couldn’t agree more.

Hilarious Black Dude Answers White People’s Most Burning Questions

“Have you ever had a question you wanted to ask the one black friend that you know, but refrained because you didn’t want to run the risk of sounding racist?”

That’s the question Gabriel Green asked at the College Union Poetry Slam Invitational finals  in March. Green, a student at Eastern Michigan University, gives hilarious responses to common mysteries he assumes white people are dying to solve. For example, why are black people so good at basketball?

His explanations are funny, but also serve to demystify the black experience for his white peers.

On his list of questions is, “Do black people hate all white people?” to which Green says, “Of course we don’t, we just hate the people who perpetuate or refuse to acknowledge the history of social, political, and racial f**kery placed against us.”

And yes, Green reminds white audience members, if you have to ask if something is racist… it is.

The competition included several other talented poets that performed pieces about the challenges of black experience. Head over to Button Poetry to watch those.

Jack Huston to Collaborate With Oliver Peoples

JACK OF ALL TRADES: Jack Huston is adding a new title to his CV: eyewear designer. The British actor serves as the face of Oliver Peoples, and for spring will increase his involvement by codesigning a pair of frames. “I’m a sunglass fanatic,” Huston told WWD, calling from set in Italy, where he is filming the upcoming “Ben-Hur” remake. “They approached me about collaborating on a frame and I was like, ‘Are you kidding? That sounds awesome.’”
The one-off style, which is named after the actor, features a thick acetate frame with three pin detailing along the front temples, and will be available as both a sunglass and optical frame. The frames will be available in four colors: Ebonywood, Raintree, which is a light brown, Cocobolo — which is a reddish-brown — and black. The Ebonywood and Raintree glasses will feature a new style of lenses for the brand: the VFX Plus, a polarized glass lens that features rare earth materials and infrared coating, which aims to keep eyes cool and less strained than with typical lenses. The Jack Huston sunglass frame, which retails for $ 475, will be available for purchase at Oliver Peoples boutiques and additional select stores beginning later
