Watch Janet Jackson Surprise the Winners of Her Dance Competition and Invite Them to Perform at Billboard Awards

Rhythm Nation just got bigger!

Janet Jackson is all set to rock the stage at the 2018 Billboard Music Awards and she’ll be grooving along next to two excited new faces.

Dancers Phillip Galbert, 28, of New Britain, Conn. and La’Vala “Lala” Moss, 26, of Birmingham, Ala. had already received the news that they’d been chosen out of 75,000 hopefuls as winners of the star’s global #DanceWithJanet competition.

But they then learned from the superstar herself that not only were they part of her JTribe, but they’d soon be taking the stage to perform with her on national television.

“Obviously we saw what you did online and that’s the reason why you’re here. You did a great job,” Jackson, in the exclusive clip above, tells Galbert and Moss who first submitted auditions online.

“We’ve come to a decision,” she says seated on the floor next to her current dancers, “How would you like to dance with us on the Billboard Awards?”

The question was met with both dancers collapsing to floor in disbelief as Jackson and her dancers rush over to embrace them.

“It was so intense,” Moss says in an interview just after getting the news. “This was the longest audition I’ve ever had to do in my life but it was so worth it.”

Moss first made national headlines when her original audition tape went viral. Moss had opted to shoot her audition video in the middle of the street in Birmingham when an officer drove up to tell her to move. But after hearing what she was doing, the officer changed his mind, stopped traffic and put on his spotlight encouraging Moss to keep dancing and follow her dream.

For Bronx native Galbert, he almost didn’t have the chance to audition in person. After receiving word that his video audition earned him an invite to the final callbacks in Los Angeles, Galbert responded that he did not have the money to afford a flight from his current home in Connecticut. Furthermore, he was on the verge of eviction. But Jackson’s teamed helped him get to L.A. and the experience changed his life.

“As a professional dancer that’s your dream to dance with Janet Jackson,” Galbert said during an interview. “You grow up wanting to be with these people and inspired by these people…No one understands what I go through, and to have this given to me. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

As Jackson’s current JTribe members tell the newbies, “Dreams do come true!” They’ll all join the superstar onstage for her first television performance in nine years, at the Billboard Awards.

California Woman Inspires Teens All Over the World to Perform Acts of Kindness

Even though she had a privileged childhood, Gaby Ghorbani never got numb to the poverty surrounding her as a child growing up in Guadalajara, Mexico as she witnessed children begging or selling gum on the streets to put food on their tables.

“I would always give food away and when I got my driver’s license, I would see kids on the corner and I would ask “Are you hungry? Where is your Mommy?’ ” Ghorbani, 46, tells PEOPLE. “And they would say ‘Yes, I’m hungry. But I don’t know.’

” I would take them in my car to get something to eat and then drop them back off on the corner,” she says. “When I got caught, I got in so much trouble. My mother would get mad and say, ‘You can’t do that!’ And she would tell me I couldn’t help every one, so why even try?”

Undeterred, that drive to help others never abated, and when she immigrated to the United States when she was about 18, she began planting the seeds for  Pledge to Humanity, an organization she founded in 2009 that inspires youths to make a difference both locally and globally. Groups are formed through schools, sport clubs and service organizations and perform acts of kindness.

Thousands of students have participated in the program. She works with kids to make sandwiches to donate to shelters, takes kids to spend time with the elderly or severely disable children and she organizes them to assemble and collect hundreds of care packages for veterans and the homeless. The projects are seemingly endless, from helping underprivileged kids from neighboring schools to spay and neuter clinics.

Globally, the organization has built schools in Third World countries and volunteers can travel to the places they have supported to see the fruits of their labor. The organization is growing nationwide as volunteers go away to college and start their own programs.

“Our children here live in a bubble, where they have access to so much,” says Skye Larch, principal of Rancho Romero Elementary school in Alamo. “The power behind this is that it develops empathy and compassion in the most natural of ways. They learn small deeds really impact someone’s life and extends beyond them.”

Ghorbani married at 20 and has two sons, Arman, 24 and Jovani, 14, and a daughter Natalia, 20, who all share her passion for helping others. Ghorbani would take her young children with her to give out food and gift cards to the needy. When they ate at restaurants, she would order meals and give them to people outside. Every international trip included handing out gifts to people less fortunate.

“I would think, ‘My children will know how they need to be part of the change we need to be and to be giving, loving and grateful citizens of the world,” says Ghorbani, of Alamo, California.  “Out of all the things we do for our kids, the most important thing is to teach them to give of themselves.”

Ghorbani started taking some of her children’s friends with them on their outings to the tenderloin for many years. Although she was a successful entrepreneur and the wife of a prominent businessman, it wasn’t enough to fulfill her.

“Every day I thought, I would rather be helping in a soup kitchen,” she says. “I tell children what real success in life is not in monetary form, but being engaged in what is around you and caring for the needs of others without hesitation. Don’t do it as your good deed of the day, do it like breathing, because breathing is automatic and necessary.”

Ghorbani encourages students to “turn on their antennas” so they can locate people in need — from children who need a friend at school, to seniors who need help with their groceries. They sign a “kindness contract” to look for ways to help others.

One second grader who signed a contract excitedly told Ghorbani how he had told a friend on crutches that he would help him with whatever he needed.

“To go from that to global service is an attitude that ripples out,” she says.

Ghorbani says it all started with the intention of empowering children.

“I went to elementary schools and told them ‘You don’t know me and I don’t know you, but I know that you are capable and you have everything within you to make someone’s life better to be a blessing to someone else’ ” she says. “I told them, ‘You don’t have to be an adult. You don’t have to be rich. You don’t have to be famous or a super star or a sports star, to have an impact on someone today. Kids started listening and embraced that and it grew, grew, grew.”

One of those students was Kailey McKnight, 18, who says Ghorbani’s passion for helping other inspired her to start the San Ramon Valley High School club when she was just 14. The club has grown from about 10 members to more than 400. There are so many students wanting to participate that the club had to start a waiting list.

“I have a lot of friends I never thought would do community service and would never thought they would care about other people besides themselves,” says Kailey McKnight. “But they love doing it and keep signing up for more.”

Kailey’s mother Beth says she has never volunteered before becoming involved in Pledge to Humanity and now “she’s hooked.” “They say you can’t save everyone, but Gaby just might,” says Beth McKnight.

Jon Campopiano, principal at Stone Valley Middle School in Alamo, says Ghorbani’s son Jovani started a buddy program for kids who felt ostracized at school.

“He took these lunch periods, which can be long and awkward, and made it a time for the kids to all feel included,” Campolpiano says. “Middle schoolers are not known for their empathy, but Gaby and her son have made that happen almost effortlessly.”

All of this is music to  Ghorbani’s ears.

“When we are gone from this earth, I want to think that Pledge to Humanity will have hundreds of thousands of ambassadors doing kind things daily, “she says. “It’s not just a non-profit in Danville and Alamo, but a global movement. I believe in the children. If I’d gotten the same support at 12, God knows what it would be like now!”

It Looks Like Andrea Bocelli Won’t Perform At Trump’s Inauguration

Just when you thought it was time to break your Andrea Bocelli CDs in two, the opera singer is reportedly not performing at Donald Trump’s inauguration ceremony, despite earlier reports.

Whether Bocelli was ever officially slated to perform is unclear.

According to Page Six, the singer bowed to backlash from fans and is backing out of the gig.

“Bocelli said there was no way he’d take the gig . . . he was ‘getting too much heat’ and he said no,” a source told the outlet.

In response to reports, Presidential Inaugural Committee chairman Tom Barrack told CNBC Tuesday morning that the president-elect had not asked the opera singer to perform at the Jan. 20 ceremony. Barrack claims that Bocelli and his wife, who are “friends” with Trump, offered to consider performing “if it would be helpful.”

Last week it was announced that Jackie Evancho, a 16-year-old singer best known for appearing on “America’s Got Talent” at age 10, would perform the national anthem at the inauguration.

Shortly after the announcement, Evancho’s mother told TMZ that Bocelli would also perform. Later, TMZ clarified that she’d “jumped the gun” on the announcement, as the 58-year-old singer had not formally committed to the engagement.

In November, Elton John also had to deny rumors that he was performing at Trump’s inauguration. The president-elect often played the singer’s music on the campaign trail without the British singer’s approval.

“I’ve met Donald Trump, he was very nice to me, it’s nothing personal, his political views are his own, mine are very different, I’m not a Republican in a million years,” he said in an interview with the Guardian in February. “Why not ask Ted fucking Nugent? Or one of those fucking country stars? They’ll do it for you.”

The Huffington Post has reached out to reps for Trump and Bocelli and will update this post accordingly.

Pussy Riot To Perform In ‘Political Happening’ At Art Basel Miami Beach

Art Basel Miami Beach festivities kick off this week, bringing plenty of art fairs, champagne toasts, socialites, B-list celebs and free caviar to the city’s glitzed-out, sandy shores. And also, more unconventionally, the Russian feminist punk band Pussy Riot.

Kathy Grayson of New York gallery The Hole confirmed the Page Six rumor to artnet News, affirming that the group will participate in a rare “political happening” at some point during Art Basel that will consist of a performance and a talk. Like most of the week’s most sought-after events, it’s an exclusive one ― invitation-only, to be exact ― and capped at 500 people.

For those who may feel a bit uncomfortable about participating in a week-long bacchanal of art world decadence so shortly after a devastating presidential election, Pussy Riot offers an opportunity for liberal political activism in a most unusual venue.

The band, most well-known for spending nearly two years in a Russian prison after criticizing President Vladimir Putin in 2012, recently released three songs criticizing Donald Trump before the election, including the incredibly catchy girl-power anthem “Straight Outta Vagina.” Following Trump’s election, Pussy Riot encouraged fans not to lose hope on Twitter.

Of course, there is something strikingly un-punk about performing at a wildly exorbitant art fair known for star-studded stunts ― for example, that time Usher charged his cell phone in a naked woman’s vagina. But we hope that, despite the exclusive nature of the happening, Pussy Riot can radically shake up the art world elite.

For the rest of us normies who will not be in attendance, we can always pray for an Inauguration Day surprise.

Nicoletta Braschi and Andrea Renzi Perform “Happy Days” in Lisbon

Nicoletta Braschi and Andrea Renzi received a standing ovation for their rendering of Samuel Beckett’s “Happy Days” this weekend, to a packed audience in Lisbon, in a side-event of the Lisbon @ Estoril Film Festival. To my great regret, I did not manage to see it. In Beckett-like repetition, I tried twice to get to the play, and each time was blocked by traffic.

Nevertheless the famed Italian actress Nicoletta Braschi welcomed me to sit with her at breakfast to discuss it.

2016-11-12-1478962045-7283686-WinnieOne.jpg

With great exuberance, the engaging actress told me how she and Andrea (who is both the director and her husband “Willie” in the play) had worked years on the text, on each word.

“The text is so complex, so extraordinary,” she exclaimed. “We worked on every word, every space between the words.”

In Beckett’s Happy Days, Winnie is buried up to her waist in a mound of sand, carrying on a monologue about her daily existence, while her husband calls out–occasionally–from his newspaper.

“How do you interpret the philosophy of the play?” I asked. “What is your take on Beckett, and your character Winnie?”

I could intuit that hers would not be a gloomy take. It is impossible to see Nicoletta as an alienated, frozen Winnie, stumped by existence,as she is sometimes played. The actress exudes energy–and dare I say, happiness.

“Oh Beckett is not sad or despairing,” Nicoletta smiled radiantly. “He is showing life as it is. Happy Days is life. Life is like that. We are born here in conditions that just are and we face these conditions. For example, Winnie speaks in contradictions. ‘The sun is blazing today,’ is one of her lines. And a moment later, she says today there is no sun. This contradiction touches the reality of life: there is both one thing and the other. Winnie has great passion for life. She changes her ideas, she is very vital!”

One of Beckett’s famous lines in this play is: “Yes, something seems to have occurred, something has seemed to occur, and nothing has occurred, nothing at all.”

Even this line Nicoletta interpreted with its positive force. “A contradiction once more. Something has happened, or has it not,” she smiled. “It’s brilliant!”

Director Andrea Renzi came to our table, from the breakfast buffet, and affably joined the conversation.

“How do you see the meaning of this play?” I asked.

“It’s about dignity and resistance,” he said at once, with equal passion. “Yes there is a space–a breath–an abyss–between the words. But the characters look into this abyss. Remember the play begins with waking up! Each morning, the character wakes to give meaning to her life. Beckett’s characters are always going deeper into the conditions of their lives, and becoming more profound.”

The spirit of this interpretation was so exhilarating I regretted once more missing the play.

“Don’t worry!” Nicoletta touched my arm. “We will be playing in New York and in Canada and in Italy. You will have another chance! I’ll let you know our schedule!

I will take on the Beckett odds and persevere–and next time will not miss it!

Macklemore And Oscar The Grouch Perform ‘Thrift Shop’ Parody On Sesame Street

Macklemore recently popped by Sesame Street to pop some… trash?!

With the help of Oscar the Grouch and a bunch of other garbage-loving Grouches, the Grammy Award-winning rapper performed a catchy — if not slightly bewildering — parody of his hit song “Thrift Shop” on Monday’s episode of the children’s show.

In the video above, watch as Macklemore waxes lyrical about garbage, romping through Sesame Street while explaining how “one man’s trash” is “another Grouch’s outfit.”

“I’m gonna pop some trash,” the Grouches crooned. “Only got seven bags in my trash can. I-I-I’m shopping, looking for some rubbish, this is gross and awesome.”

Listen to the whole song in the video above.

Madonna And Beyonce Expected To Perform At Grammys

To all the performers on next week’s Grammy Awards lineup: Sit down, the queens are in the house.

Madonna and Beyonce are set to perform at the Grammys on Jan. 26, according to a Los Angeles Times report that cites “two sources with knowledge of the plans.” The Huffington Post reached out to representatives from both singers’ camps and will update this post upon receiving confirmation of the news.

Madonna is expected to contribute guest vocals to a performance from one of the night’s nominees. Previously scheduled performers who Madonna could cozy up with onstage include Lorde, Taylor Swift, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, and Kendrick Lamar with Imagine Dragons.

Beyonce will offer her first televised performance since releasing her surprise self-titled album on Dec. 13. The momentum for the unexpected release hasn’t dwindled yet, as the album still sits at No. 2 on the Billboard albums chart and could receive an additional boost from the singer’s Grammy appearance.

“Let’s put it this way … we have a really great history that goes back to the early days of Destiny’s Child,” Grammy show producer Ken Ehrlich told the Los Angeles Times, despite being unable to confirm or deny the two singers’ involvement. “I love working with [Beyonce]. She’s incredible. She is so into what it is that she does and making sure that everybody who sees her walks away saying ‘wow.’”

Beyonce is up for one Grammy this year, as a featured artist on Jay Z’s “Magna Carta…Holy Grail” track “Part II (On The Run).” She and Madonna have a long history with the awards. Thanks to both her solo work and her Destiny’s Child material, Beyonce is one of the most-honored female artists in Grammy history, behind Alison Krauss and Aretha Franklin. Madonna has seven Grammy trophies, three of which came for her acclaimed 1998 album “Ray of Light.” Her 2006 performance with Gorillaz and De La Soul is commonly credited as one of the best Grammy acts in recent years.

If the news comes to fruition, Madonna and Beyonce will join an all-star roster of performers that also includes a Beatles reunion featuring Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, Daft Punk taking the stage alongside Nile Rodgers, Pharrell Williams and Stevie Wonder, and Metallica being joined by noted concert pianist Lang Lang.
