Ailing Prince Philip, 96, Misses Easter Church Service with Queen Elizabeth and Royal Family

Prince Philip, who has been suffering from a hip problem, missed the second major royal public event in a week — the Easter services alongside Queen Elizabeth at Windsor Castle on Sunday.

The prince, 96, was conspicuously absent, as the Queen, 91, had most of her family around her for Easter day celebration at St. George’s Chapel today.

On Thursday, he was not able to attend the traditional Maundy service, which was also held at St. George’s Chapel — the wedding venue for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on May 19.

“The Order of Service was printed some weeks ago when it was hoped the Duke would be able to take part,” a palace spokesperson said on Thursday.

Philip had intended to go to the Maundy service but made the decision not to attend because he has been experiencing some “trouble with his hip,” a royal source added.

Philip retired from public life last year, and it was said then that he might appear at public events alongside his wife of 70 years, the Queen.

Much of the royal family did, however, join the Queen on Sunday — including Prince William and pregnant Kate Middleton, in what is likely her last public appearance before welcoming the couple’s third child later this month.

32 Vintage Photos Of Prince Philip Looking SO Sharp

It’s official: Prince Philip is retiring. Buckingham Palace announced Thursday morning that starting this fall, the 96-year-old Duke of Edinburgh will stop carrying out public engagements.

When it comes to style recognition, Philip, who is best known for his one-liners, often takes a back seat to Queen Elizabeth II or younger British royals like the Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry.

But just like his wife, Philip has always had a strong sense of style, whether on official occasions, during polo matches or, you know, hanging out with the Beatles. He was named one of GQ UK’s best-dressed men in Britain in 2014, but his dapper days go way further back.

Although we’ll be seeing less of this long-serving consort, we have plenty of opportunities to both honor him and take style major style inspiration from his life by way of these amazing vintage photos. Check out 32 of our favorite looks below.

Britain’s Prince Philip To Step Down From Royal Duties

LONDON, May 4 (Reuters) – Prince Philip, the 95-year-old husband of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth, is to retire from carrying out royal engagements later this year, Buckingham Palace announced on Thursday.

The prince, also known as the Duke of Edinburgh who has been by his wife’s side throughout her 65 years on the throne, had decided he would cease public duties from autumn, the palace said in a statement.

The queen, the world’s longest-reigning living monarch who celebrated her 91st birthday in April, will continue to carry out a full program of official engagements, it added.

The announcement was made following a meeting of senior royal staff at Buckingham Palace, news of which prompted speculation about the health of the royals.

However, a well-placed source said there was no cause for concern about the welfare of the queen or Philip, who turns 96 next month.

The couple, who are due to celebrate their platinum, or 70th, wedding anniversary in November have been cutting their workload in recent years, passing on many responsibilities to son and heir Prince Charles, and grandsons, Princes William and Harry.

Both carried out official duties on Wednesday, with Elizabeth meeting Prime Minister Theresa May to formally agree to the dissolution of parliament ahead of June’s election while Philip opened a new stand at Lord’s Cricket Ground in central London.

Philip Glass Celebrates 80 with a World Premiere at Carnegie Hall

2017-01-25-1485354471-2335280-philipglassphotobystevepyke_0.jpg

By Christopher Johnson, ZEALnyc Contributing Writer, January 25, 2017

He’s been our go-to “ascendant modernist” for so long that it’s easy to forget that Philip Glass ages just like the rest of us, and thus it may come as a shock to learn that he celebrates his eightieth birthday on January 31. As if to strain credulity even further, Glass will mark the occasion with a concert at Carnegie Hall featuring two premières–the world première of his Symphony No. 11 and the New York première of Ifé: Three Yorùbá Songs, his collaboration with the great Beninese singer-songwriter and activist Angélique Kidjo–along with Days and Nights in Rocinha, his luscious tribute to Rio de Janeiro and its samba school, all of it dished up by his longtime collaborators Dennis Russell Davies and the Bruckner Orchester Linz. Glass may not be quite as prolific as Haydn, but give him time–as of this writing, he’s still only seventy-nine.

The concert anchors a year of notable performances and events encompassing every facet of Glass’s career–opera, chamber music, orchestral music, dance, theatre works–including a three-day festival at London’s Barbican, a ten-day celebration at Carolina Performing Arts, and “Philip @ 80,” a year-long series of programs at National Sawdust, beginning on February 24 with Maki Namekawa’s performance of the complete Piano Etudes. It also marks the beginning of the venerable Bruckner Orchester‘s first American tour since 2009, following the opening of their spectacular new music theatre.

The new symphony, Glass told us in an interview to be published shortly, celebrates “a relationship that any composer would envy,” with an orchestra that’s heard or done all his symphonies, and that he has come to know intimately. There’s no program or story, he says, but the piece is couched in a “late-period style” related to his “more political” operas Appomatox and The Trial. It’s more contrapuntal than his other symphonies and enriched by the full capabilities of the modern orchestra, including the contrabass clarinet and Linz’s eight percussionists. The Linz players, Glass says, welcomed an extra session where Glass tried “things I’d done with my own ensemble that I hadn’t done with an orchestra,” and the result was fed into the symphony. “How great is that?” he asks.

Ifé, based on three Yorùbá songs about the creation of the world (click here for an excerpt), is the fruit of a close and happy collaboration between Glass and Grammy-winner Angélique Kidjo–a relationship that, for Glass, “built a bridge that no one has walked on before.” For Kidjo, Glass’s music is “hypnotic and creates a kind of trance, like our traditional music. Also it feels like a living organism that is developing over time. A wonderful feeling: You’re witnessing life being created.” “She’s a wonderful performer,” Glass replies, “and I’m really pleased that we’ll get to do it at Carnegie Hall.” Ifé, in turn, is closely related to Days and Nights in Rocinha: Yorùbá culture had a huge impact on Brazil, Glass notes, so the two pieces, in many ways, come from the same place.

Should be quite a party.

First Nighter: Philip Ridley’s Mercury Fur Has a Dyspeptic Future

Fiction set in the future never seems to have nailed it right when the actual future rolls around. Maybe Jules Verne hit on a few things that came to pass, but how accurate is, say, something like the 1927 Metropolis or the Flash Gordon series or the Star Wars predictions or too many other movies (Blade Runner?), plays and books? Or are we still adopting a wait-and-see attitude?

One set of predictions we can rely on not eventuating — if only because they’re so ludicrous — pops up in Mercury Fur, the 2005 Philip Ridley scarer that played a couple London venues then and now, a decade later, shows up in a New Group production, directed muscularly by Scott Elliott, at the Pershing Square Signature Center, but not so muscularly that it overcomes its irritatingly preposterous suppositions.

Sometime in increasingly dumbed-down days to come — but in not so many days that smartphones have been superseded — brothers Elliot (Zane Pais as the clever, well-read one) and Darren (Jack DiFalco as the dimwitted one) break into an abandoned Manhattan apartment (phenomenally dingy set by Derek McLane) and go about sort of cleaning it up for a party that’s apparently been organized by a tough fellow called Spinx (Sea McHale), who has yet to appear.

Also attending the party either eagerly or under duress are Naz (Tony Revolori), who’s squatting down the hall and wants in on whatever action he thinks will occur, Elliot’s kinda cross-dressing boyfriend Lola (Paul iacono, in halter outfit by costumer Susan Hilferty), Duchess (Emily Cass McDonnell, in Hilferty’s tatty ball gown with white fur stole), who may have a curious relationship to the brothers by virtue of a few matching head wounds, Party Guest (Peter Mark Kendall), a Wall Streeter with a certain deviant hankering and Party Piece (Bradley Fong), a drugged kid.

If the monikers Party Guest and Party Piece are baffling, Ridley wants it that way. He’s after slowly revealing that the parties Spinx arranges and Elliot and Darren facilitate are snuff events — the one at hand unfolding under a short deadline that annoys the battling bros. At this one, Party Guest gets to assassinate Party Piece, who’ll be attired as a child Elvis Presley. Don’t ask. That’s already spoiler enough.

Anyway, throwing bashes for financiers with enough money to expend on this type of unnatural high is what the world has (will?) become in Ridley’s busy mind. And it’s what he and New Group artistic director Elliott are asking an audience — many of whom are seated on upholstered Goodwill-like chairs also decorating the adaptable Romulus Linney playing area — to watch. Presumably, we’ll find in it a horrifying warning of what’s will inevitably develop if we don’t straighten up and fly right.

The Mercury Fur promotional material terms Ridley’s view a “dystopian nightmare.” What’s actually dystopian about the work is how it’s written. It’s what’s being flaunted in the name of engaging, enraging theater. Before the final black-out on the guns partially hidden at the belt line of dirty jeans or in a drawer or on free-flowing blood or on the threat of various-sized conflagrations — not to mention constantly repeated epithets intended to sound like the way people talk now and still will then — the audience progresses from laughing at an occasional genuine joke to laughing at the entire ridiculous enterprise.

Speaking of genuine jokes, there is one witty sequence. Darren, far from the brightest bulb in the broken chandelier, takes it on himself to explain a bit of 20th century history to the even dimmer but attentive Naz. It concerns a President Kennedy and a consort named Marilyn Monroe as well as an orgy-like Dallas, Texas event. Throughout the monologue, Ridley may be getting at something close to the truth of how history is regarded in schoolrooms nowadays and how much worse it might get.

Another odd historical reference crops up. It’s to 1965 Oscar-winning movie The Sound of Music(!). Early on in an attempt to defuse Elliot’s abuse, Darren recalls a family viewing of the flick. Later, Duchess, who at least twice gets yuks by declaring “I feel a song coming on,” plunges haltingly into “Climb Ev’ry Mountain” before collapsing — but not this time soiling herself, which Spinx reports she often does.

By the way, why Ridley calls the play Mercury Fur beats me. I can only guess — unless I missed an explanation while tuning out on the rampantly perverse silliness — that the title refers to a type of butterfly. Over and over, butterflies come in for mentions. According to the history sketched in here, butterflies were wiped out for a time before resurfacing. When they did, they produced various emotions and sensations in anyone eating them. Darren ingests one and becomes giddy. Later, Elliot talks about a black one that causes suicides. I’m not sure, though, whether the butterflies are meant to be real or a dealer-dispensed confection. Does it matter? Probably not.

As actors almost always do when committed to questionable material, those here go at it as if they’re playing Hamlet or Volpone or Long Day’s Journey Into Night or Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? They flinch at none of the ignominies they’re required to undergo. Sitting or lying on furniture that’s been subjected to who knows what or doused in stage blood or, in the case of Fong, pushed and pulled around, they’re gallant in response. As Spinx, McHale is asked to swipe DiFalco upside the head again and again. McHale pulls no swipe, and DiFalco takes it like a trouper.

With Elliott cracking the whip — surely, not literally — they’re a rum ensemble. The enterprise, however, into which they, lighting designer Jeff Croiter, sound designer M.L. Dogg, special effects designer Jeremy Chernick, fight designer UnkleDave’s Fight-House and props supervisor Matthew Frew have poured their efforts is hardly worth it.

Philip Seymour Hoffman Investigation Suspect Had Actor’s Phone Number, Authorities Say

NEW YORK (AP) — At least one of four people arrested during an investigation of actor Philip Seymour Hoffman’s suspected fatal heroin overdose had the actor’s cellphone number, two law enforcement officials said Wednesday.

Investigators zeroed in on the four after a tipster, responding to publicity about Hoffman’s death, told police he had seen Hoffman at the lower Manhattan apartment building where they were arrested on Tuesday and he believed that’s where Hoffman got the heroin, the officials said. In searches of two apartments in the building, police found hundreds of packets of heroin in one of them, according to a criminal complaint. But prosecutors declined to pursue charges against one of the four, saying there was no evidence that he had control of the drugs or the apartment in which they were found, and two of the others were charged only with a misdemeanor charge of possessing cocaine, not heroin. Only one, jazz musician Robert Vineberg, was facing a felony charge of heroin possession with intent to sell.

Lawyers for the three people charged vigorously denied their clients had any role in Hoffman’s death and suggested they were being swept up in a maelstrom of attention surrounding the actor’s demise.

“This case and the charges against Mr. Vineberg have absolutely nothing to do with the death of Philip Seymour Hoffman. … We’re hoping the (district attorney) will not use Mr. Vineberg as a scapegoat,” said his lawyer, Edward Kratt, who declined to say whether Vineberg knew Hoffman.

The arrests came two days into the high-profile case, reflecting the attention and urgency it has attracted. All three of the people charged were indicted within a day after their arrests, a fairly unusual step, and were being held without bail. The two charged with cocaine possession, Juliana Luchkiw and Max Rosenblum, a couple who are neighbors of Vineberg’s, were visibly dismayed when a judge denied them bail, though their lawyers hoped to revisit the issue Thursday.

“She’s not a drug dealer. She’s a college student,” attending a design school, said Luchkiw’s lawyer, Stephen Turano.

Rosenblum’s lawyer, Daniel Hochheiser, said his client “has nothing to do with Philip Seymour Hoffman.”

Luchkiw and Rosenbaum had two bags of cocaine, while investigators found about 300 packets of heroin, a bag of cocaine and about $ 1,200 in cash in Vineberg’s apartment, according to criminal complaints.

Investigators have determined that the “Capote” star made six ATM transactions for a total of $ 1,200 inside a supermarket near his home the day before his death, law enforcement officials have said. Investigators are examining a computer and two iPads found at the scene for clues and recovered syringes, a charred spoon and various prescription medications, including a blood pressure drug and a muscle relaxant, law enforcement officials have said.

Police learned from phone records that one of the suspects had Hoffman’s number, strengthening the theory that they may have supplied him with drugs, the law enforcement officials said. The officials, who weren’t authorized to speak about evidence in the ongoing investigation of the death and spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity, didn’t identify which of the suspects had the number.

Some of the packets found in Hoffman’s apartment were variously stamped with the ace of hearts and others with the ace of spades. Those found in the building where the arrests occurred had different brand names, including Black List and Panda, the officials said.

Police were waiting for a cause of death for the Oscar-winning actor from the medical examiner’s office, which said on Wednesday that more tests were needed.

There was no timetable for Hoffman’s autopsy to be finished, said medical examiner’s office spokeswoman Julie Bolcer, who declined to discuss the pending tests. Toxicology and tissue tests are typically done in such cases.

Hoffman, 46, was found dead Sunday with a needle in his arm, and tests found heroin in samples from at least 50 packets in his apartment in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village, law enforcement officials have said.

Courts have found that under state law drug dealers can’t be held liable for customers’ deaths.

A 1972 state appellate division case found a dealer can’t be found guilty of manslaughter or criminally negligent homicide for selling heroin and syringes to a customer who later dies because, the court ruled, legislation enhancing punishment for drug crimes didn’t redefine homicide to include the sale of an illicit drug that results in death.

And holding a drug dealer criminally liable for a customer’s overdose death could prove difficult for the district attorney’s office, said James Cohen, a Fordham University School of Law professor who runs a clinic that represents federal criminal defendants.

“It’s not just enough that you know, if you will, theoretically or academically, that heroin could kill,” he said.

Former police detective Scott Prendergast, who worked on the high-profile investigation into the 1996 heroin overdose death of Jonathan Melvoin, a keyboard player touring with the rock band Smashing Pumpkins, said it’s not uncommon for investigators to track down dealers following suspected overdose deaths especially when the drugs are stamped with telling names.

A private funeral for relatives and close friends of Hoffman is set for Friday, and a larger memorial service will be held later this month, his publicist Karen Samfilippo said.

On Wednesday night, Broadway theaters dimmed their lights in memory of the Tony Award-nominated actor, and members of the theater community held a candlelight vigil for him.
