This Is Why We Won’t See Prince George and Princess Charlotte’s Back-to-School Photos This Year

It’s back to school for royal kids too, but Prince William and Kate Middleton aren’t showing off Prince George and Princess Charlotte’s first day photos.

Although George begins his second year at Thomas’s Battersea on Thursday, and Charlotte returned to Willcocks Nursery School on Wednesday, there weren’t any official snaps taken.

Insiders tell PEOPLE that there won’t be pictures of the royal children every year. The couple has always made a point of treating school as a private area, so that George and Charlotte can grow up in as pressure-free an atmosphere as possible.

Will and Kate released photos of George’s first day of school last year because it was a significant milestone: his first day at Thomas’s Battersea.

They also shared photos of George’s first day of preschool back in 2016 at the Westacre Montessori School in Norfolk. But they didn’t share photos from his second year of preschool.

Can’t get enough of PEOPLE’s Royals coverage? Sign up for our newsletter to get the latest updates on Kate Middleton, Meghan Markle and more!

Likewise, the royal parents shared photos of Charlotte’s very first day of preschool earlier this year, when she officially started at Willcocks Nursery School in January. But they didn’t share snaps for her first day back to school earlier this week.

The royal siblings will likely next be seen in an official capacity at Princess Eugenie’s wedding on October 12, when they could reprise their role as little bridal party members. George and Charlotte stole the show as a page boy and bridesmaid in both Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s recent nuptials and their aunt Pippa Middleton’s wedding last May.

Kaley Cuoco Marries Karl Cook in Romantic Ceremony — See Their Wedding Photos!

Kaley Cuoco is married!

The Big Bang Theory star tied the knot with professional equestrian Karl Cook at an intimate wedding at a horse stable near San Diego, California, attended by close friends and family on Saturday, PEOPLE confirms.

“Legally KCSQUARED 6-30-18 ❤,” Cuoco — who wore a white lace dress with a cape — captioned an Instagram showing her kissing Cook near horse stalls.

“Ok let’s party!!! #kcsquared 💋 💕,” the actress captioned a second snap of the newlyweds gearing up for the reception.

Cuoco, 32, and Cook, 27, delivered their own wedding vows, which had the bride both laughing and wiping tears from her cheeks, as a guest showed in an Instagram video.

One guest shared the moment Cook and Cuoco were married by a friend.

“I love you both so much,” the pal said before joking about how she took an online course to officiate the wedding, making Cuoco kneel over laughing.

Once pronounced husband and wife, the crowd cheered as the couple leaned in for their first kiss as newlyweds.

Another special video features the pair preparing for their first dance at the reception.

Cuoco and Cook got engaged on her birthday in November 2017 after dating for nearly two years.

Just hours before sharing the proposal on social media, Cook teased Cuoco with a fake ring while shopping at Target.

“On my loves birthday I got her everything she has always wanted….now judging by her face maybe not, it’s the thought that counts right,” he shared.

Then, Cook — the son of software billionaire Scott Cook — treated her to a romantic candlelit dinner and popped the question for real for a stunning tear-drop diamond, documenting her tearful reaction on Instagram.

She celebrated her bachelorette party in June.

“He is my perfect match,” Cuoco gushed to PEOPLE in March, adding that she hoped to make their pets part of their wedding. “He lets me wake up in the morning and say, ‘I want to go and rescue rabbits.’ And he’s like, ‘All right, let’s get a coffee and let’s go.’ And that is him. We are the same, our views are the same, our morals are the same, he is my perfect match.”

The duo started dating in spring 2016 and made their first public appearance as a couple in September that same year. (This is the actress’s second marriage; she filed for divorce from former tennis player Ryan Sweeting in September 2015.)

“From the beginning, Kaley was crazy about Karl,” an insider previously told PEOPLE. “They have so much in common and he makes her so happy. She went through such a tough time with her divorce from Ryan, but she never gave up on finding love again. She’s really a romantic!”

Photographer, 30, Dies After Being Swept Away by Flood Waters While Taking Photos in Storm Drain

Friends of a beloved Philadelphia photographer are mourning the woman’s death after she was fatally swept away in a storm drain during a flash flood last weekend.

Rebecca Bunting, 30, and her boyfriend were inside a sewer by Roosevelt Boulevard in Northeast Philadelphia taking photos around 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 2, when a rush of water came through and dragged them both down the system, police say.

The man was able to pull himself out, but Bunting was swept away. A neighbor told 6 ABC that he heard a man screaming for help Saturday night. He said he ran outside to find Bunting’s boyfriend screaming her name by the water.

A rescue team found her body around 10:45 a.m. on Sunday, trapped under furniture left in Pennypack Creek near Philadelphia’s Holmesburg neighborhood.  In the wake of the death, Bunting’s boyfriend remembered her in a pair of Instagram posts.

“I’m glad I got to make so many memories with her. I love you so much Becca and I’m hurting so bad right now,” he wrote alongside a photo of the two posing together with wide smiles.

“Thinking back on all these memories makes me smile while these tears roll down my face. I will continue to share our memories since we had so many great ones. Please watch over your family and I, we really need it right now my love.”

Police say Bunting and her boyfriend entered the storm drain without permission to take part in “Urban Exploration,” in which they film their experiences while taking photos and footage at often abandoned locations.

“She was always trying to get really cool photos,” Bunting’s friend, Cristen DeDomenico, told 6 ABC. “She’s really talented. She could bring out beauty in any landscape.”

Bunting’s Instagram is filled with artistic photos of empty churches, plane wreckage, abandoned hospitals and other spaces. She amassed more than 15,000 followers on the social media site and often wrote of her love for photography.

“My camera is my tool,” she wrote alongside one Instagram photo of herself holding a camera. “Through it I give reason to everything around me.”

Friends have posted several tributes to Bunting on her Facebook page, and have announced a memorial for the artist scheduled for June 17.

“Words can’t express the heartache I feel in this moment. The world lost a truly amazing person Rebecca Bword Bunting …” one person wrote in a Facebook post. “Our weirdness and love for art quickly combined and you posed for a lot of MySpace worthy photoshoots (like this photo you climbed on a roof for) ha. We would spend days dressing up and taking pictures for fun.”

They continued: “We climbed rocks and “keep out” fences while exploring the places most people wouldn’t go. You always saw beauty in the things people took for granted. I loved having you as a neighbor and friend. You are an amazing soul that made an impact on the world through your work and existence. I’m grateful that I was able to meet such a beautiful person in my lifetime. Rest In Peace”

Sarah Jessica Parker and Her Twin Daughters Hit the Red Carpet — See the Adorable Photos

Sweeties in the city!

On Thursday, Sarah Jessica Parker brought two special guests with her to the New York City Ballet’s Spring Gala: 8-year-old twin daughters Tabitha and Marion!

The mother-daughter trio looked close as can be as they walked the red carpet, holding hands while posing for photographers.

Parker, 53, wore a cream-colored knee-length dress with sheer sleeves and a Peter Pan-collar, and pulled her long blonde locks up in a ballet-inspired bun. She paired the look with silver sparkly pumps.

Her twins each had their own floral dresses — one in white and the other in blue. They coordinated with matching bags, rose patterned shoes and headbands that held back their hair.

Want all the latest pregnancy and birth announcements, plus celebrity mom blogs? Click here to get those and more in the PEOPLE Babies newsletter.

Parker’s husband Matthew Broderick and the couple’s 15-year-old son James Wilkie skipped the soiree, making the evening a girls’ night out.

Prior to the event, Parker shared photos of the gals getting ready on Instagram — zooming in on their hair and shoes.

“Special night @nycballet and my wee dates are getting ready,” she wrote. “Shoes moving toward @nycballet Spring gala. With my gals.”

The New York City Ballet’s 2018 Spring Gala paid homage to famed choreographer and dancer Jerome Robbins as part of a year-long celebration marking the centennial of his birth called “Robbins 100.” Robbins was one of the NYCB’s co-founding choreographers.

Guests began the event sipping Ruinart champagne at a cocktail reception before sitting for a program that included two world premieres. An elegant seated supper ball followed.

Parker and Broderick both served on the NYCB’s  2018 Spring Gala Honorary Committee, which helped orchestrate the elegant fundraising event. Other celebrities on the panel included Annaleigh Ashford, Laura Benanti, Kristin Chenoweth, Sutton Foster, Victor Garber, Jake Gyllenhaal, Patti LuPone, Shirley MacLaine, Audra McDonald, Mandy Moore, Chita Rivera, Stephen Sondheim, Barbra Streisand, and Parker’s former Sex and the City costar Mikhail Baryshnikov.

The Real Housewives of Orange County Cast Goes without Makeup for PEOPLE: See Their Photos!

To celebrate PEOPLE’s upcoming Beautiful Issue, we’re showcasing some of the most glamorous ladies on TV as you’ve never seen them before. We asked the cast of every Real Housewives franchise to pose makeup-free — and they happily ditched their glam squads and shared natural selfies.

We’ve seen the ladies from Dallas, Beverly Hills, New York, New Jersey and Atlanta pose au natural, and today we’re unveiling the next city — Orange County. See the ladies of the O.C. without their signature mile-long lashes and professional hair and makeup in these barefaced photos below, and read on to find out what makes them feel the most confident and beautiful.

Watch PEOPLE Now every day for more makeup-free Housewives and don’t miss the cover reveal of PEOPLE’s Beautiful Issue on April 18th.

Vicki Gunvalson

When do you feel most beautiful?
After I get home from work, all my makeup is off and I finish with a nice relaxing bath.

If you were only going to wear one beauty product, what would it be?
Eyelashes or mascara.

Are there features you’re self-conscious about and if so, how have you helped yourself feel more confident about them?
As I get older, my neck really bothers me. There is nothing I can do but “own” my wrinkles and my age.

As you’ve gotten older, how has your beauty routine changed?
I pay much more attention to sunscreens and my new favorite thing is rose oil.

Tamra Judge

What physical feature have you always loved to play up?
My butt and my cheek bones.

Are there features you’re self-conscious about and if so, how have you helped yourself feel more confident about them?
My wide forehead. Creative hairstyles have helped as well as a bangs.

As you’ve gotten older, how has your beauty routine changed?
I don’t go in the sun anymore. And I find that less makeup is better.

Kelly Dodd

When do you feel most beautiful?
Everyday, when I eat healthy and exercise.

Are there features you’re self-conscious about and if so, how have you helped yourself feel more confident about them?
I get a lot of compliments on my legs, but I worry I may lose my firm butt because it wants to sag, so I literally work my booty off to stay toned.

As you’ve gotten older, how has your beauty routine changed?
When I was younger I use to just wash my face and call it a night. Now I wash, tone, brighten, retin A, moisturize. I believe beauty starts from the inside out, so I am more mindful now about nutrition, exercise and getting enough sleep.

If you were only going to wear one beauty product, what would it be?
Sunscreen to prevent wrinkles.

The Real Housewives of Dallas Cast Pose Completely Makeup Free for PEOPLE: See the Photos!

To celebrate PEOPLE’s upcoming Beautiful Issue, we’re showcasing some of the most glamorous ladies on TV as you’ve never seen them before. We asked the cast of every Real Housewives franchise to pose makeup-free — and they happily ditched their glam squads and shared personal selfies.

Today we’re kicking off the reveal with the ladies from Dallas. What do they look like without mile-long lashes, contouring and professional blowouts? Check out their barefaced photos below, and read on to find out what makes them feel the most confident and beautiful.

Watch PEOPLE Now every day for more makeup-free Housewives and don’t miss the cover reveal of PEOPLE’s Beautiful Issue on April 18th.

LeeAnne Locken

How have you learned to embrace features you’re self-conscious about?
I have gotten very good at covering up the scars on my face with makeup but in the end, they are simply evidence of a life that has been lived!

As you’ve gotten older, how has your beauty routine changed?
I have always washed my face religiously! Every morning and night. Products have come & gone but a gentle cleanser is everything to me!

If you were only going to wear one beauty product, what would it be?
Tinted sunscreen. When I was a kid I laid on a black trampoline to sunbathe, can you say first degree burn! Now I am very cautious about sun damage and pigmentation.

Brandi Redmond

When do you feel most beautiful?
I feel most beautiful when I’m makeup free, and I see my daughters in me.

What physical feature have you always loved to play up?
My eyes. To see is to believe and everyone can speak with their eyes.

How have you learned to embrace features you’re self-conscious about?
I was self-conscious about my smile because of one tooth but having a crooked tooth gives me character and a reason to always excuse myself to floss.

D’Andra Simmons

When do you feel most beautiful?
I feel most beautiful when I am with my husband. He thinks I am beautiful all the time!

What does being make-up free mean to you?
Being make-up free means being comfortable in my own skin, and having a clean face that is glowing. I developed Hard Night Good Morning skincare to help women be beautiful naturally, and have skin that they don’t have to hide under makeup.

How have you learned to embrace features you’re self-conscious about?
I am keenly aware of aging taking its natural course on my face and my body. I take care of my skin and make regular trips to the dermatologist for Clear and Brilliant (mini-fraxel laser treatments), oxygen facials and skin tightening. As for my body, I am always self-conscious about the way I look, especially my weight. I have learned to play up my best physical features and dress to enhance them instead of wearing what is trendy, but may not look the best on me. I always dress for my figure.

If you were only going to wear one beauty product, what would it be?
L-22 Elixir by Hard Night Good Morning — the one stop shop to anti-aging!

Cary Deuber

How have you learned to embrace features you’re self-conscious about?
I have been self-conscious about my tummy since I’ve had a child. My skin is a little loose and it has made me crazy for years. This year, I decided to just let it go and be happy with it. Having a child is the best thing I’ve ever done and a little loose skin is not a big deal.

When do you feel most beautiful?
When I am at the beach. I love just throwing on a swimsuit and cover-up and tinted sunscreen.

Stephanie Hollman

When do you feel most beautiful?
I feel most beautiful when I’m with my kids because they tell me I look like a princess…and kids don’t lie.

What does being make-up free mean to you?
There is something about being makeup free that gives me the sense of freedom and authenticity. There is nothing hiding me from the world. My skin is at its best when I eat healthy, work out and stay hydrated. Even though these are my daily goals, at times I slip and refocus. As I grow older I’m experiencing the importance of self-care. I do all that I can to slow down the aging process.

What physical feature have you always loved to play up?
I really try to play up my eyes. My mom always emphasized making eye contact when talking to others as a sign of respect so when I was learning how to do my makeup, the first thing I wanted to perfect was my eyes because if someone was going to look me in the eye, I want them to look good.

Kameron Westcott

As you’ve gotten older, how has your beauty routine changed?
I have found myself using more products with sunscreen. It is so incredibly important to make sure you are fully protected from the sun at all times.

If you were only going to wear one beauty product, what would it be?
Jane Iredale Tinted Sunscreen.

Inside Khloé Kardashian’s Balloon-Filled, Perfectly Pink Baby Shower — See the Photos

Showered with love!

Khloé Kardashian followed in her sisters’ footsteps and threw an extravagant (and super pink) baby shower on Saturday to celebrate her first child, a daughter, with boyfriend Tristan Thompson.

The 33-year-old reality star was “beaming” during the shower at the Hotel Bel-Air in Los Angeles, a source tells PEOPLE. The insider adds that Khloé repeatedly gushed over the ornate decorations.

“The shower was very over-the-top, but absolutely stunning. It was like a pink dream. There were pink flowers, including roses, everywhere!” the source says. “As guests entered the ballroom, they were greeted by gorgeous, hanging flower decorations. There were lots and lots of pink balloons. Pink lights also gave the shower a very romantic feeling.”

In addition to a pink neon sign that read “Baby Thompson” and an enormous elephant topiary, the source says every plate setting was decorated with a mini giraffe.

“Everywhere you looked, the attention to details was very impressive. It was truly the most special and fun shower.”

The staple of any Kardashian party, a photo booth, was also a highlight of the bash. The black and white photos came out with “Baby Thompson” and a heart print on the bottom.

The entire KarJenner family was on hand to honor the new arrival, and they documented the affair on their social media pages. New mom Kylie Jenner posted photos getting ready with BFF Jordyn Woods, then shared a selfie with three of her sisters.

The insider says family matriarch Kris Jenner gave a “very sweet” speech. “Kris thanked everyone for joining them. She expressed how proud and excited she is for Khloé,” says the source.

Want all the latest pregnancy and birth announcements, plus celebrity mom blogs? Click here to get those and more in the PEOPLE Babies newsletter.

Both Kendall Jenner and Kourtney Kardashian snapped photos of their grandmother Mary Jo “M.J.” Houghton at the bash, with the 22-year-old model captioning her shot, “Legend.”

On top of dining on Thai chicken salad, farro and red quinoa salad with sides of french fries, and macaroni and cheese, the source shares, Khloé made sure to honor some birthday girls.

For more coverage, follow our babies magazine on Flipboard.

The mom-to-be posted video of three unicorn-themed cakes on her Instagram story, explaining they were for pals Malika and Khadijah Haqq and Jen Atkins, who were celebrating birthdays.

Other guests included Kylie Richards, Larsa Pippen and Maria Menounos, who snapped a selfie with Kylie and Khloé.

Khloé also posted pictures to Instagram in which she posed with sister Kourtney to share her excitement over the event.

“Had the most unbelievable baby shower – we felt so much love! #ad So grateful to be surrounded by a beautiful support system,” she wrote, promising she’d share more photos of the celebration.

Gisele Bündchen and Tom Brady are celebrating their 9th anniversary with some gorgeous throwback wedding photos from their private family album.

The supermodel, 37, took to Instagram to express her lasting love for her NFL star husband, writing, “What a ride this past 9 years have been. I love learning and growing with you. Happy anniversary love of my lifey! Te amo muito! ❤😘

In the never-before-seen photo, the couple kisses on the altar during a private, top-secret ceremony in Santa Monica. Bündchen wore a strapless lace Dolce & Gabbana gown with a bustier bodice and teamed with a romantic lace-trim veil.

Brady, 40, echoed a similar sentiment in his own photo post.

“Live, Laugh, Love…..and I Love You! Feliz Aniversário! Te Amo muito!!❤💍😍,” he wrote on this feed.

After officially tying the knot in February 2009, the couple hosted a party two months later on the beach in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica. Bündchen wore a white silk slip dress for the oceanside soirée, while Brady wore a blue linen suit. Last year, the model shared a photo of the couple dancing on the sand in celebration of their eighth anniversary.

They both shared sweet photos kissing one another under a white canopy on the beach. And while their bond seems closer than ever, they traveled down to paradise to celebrate Bündchen’s sister Rafaela’s wedding.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Visited a Castle Today and the Photos Are a Fairy Tale Come True!

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle said a big “prynhawn da” (good afternoon in Welsh!) to Wales on Thursday, where cheering crowds welcomed them to the capital city of Cardiff.

The newly engaged couple stepped out at Cardiff Castle, a 2,000-year-old historic site that features Rapunzel-worthy towers and opulent interiors. The visit marked the latest milestone in the ongoing introduction of Meghan to the British public in the countdown to the royal wedding on May 19. Meghan honored the locale by pairing her black Stella McCartney coat with pants by Welsh brand Hiut Denim.

The couple was all smiles as they held hands while they greeted the crowds gathered outside the castle.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Harry, 33, and the L.A.-raised Meghan, 36, were greeted by well-wishers before being given a taste of modern Welsh life and traditional culture. Among those pressed against the barrier — and displaying her American flag — was Julie Hoefer, 31, from Dundas, Va.

“We don’t have a royal family in America, and the whole idea is amazing,” she said. “And now we have one who joined the family — finally. It is super exciting.”

She hopes the flag will catch the couple’s eye so that they say hello. “That’s the goal,” says Hoefer, who teaches in Kuwait and is in the U.K. on vacation. Next to them was Cynthia Osborne, a retired nurse from Cardiff. She wrapped a Welsh flag around her red Stetson-style hat and held a bunch of daffodils, the national flower of Wales.

“Meghan looks lovely, a breath of fresh air,” said Osborne. “She sparkles — and I’d like to see the ring to see if it sparkles.”

The castle gates were thrown open to the public at 9 a.m., enabling as many as people as possible to join the crowds. Meghan and Harry’s last outing was in Brixton on January 9, and they are expected to make several more before their Windsor Castle wedding.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Earlier, Cardiff’s city council leader Huw Thomas said they were delighted to “extend a warm Welsh welcome” to the couple, adding, “Their visit will aim to showcase some of the rich heritage and culture that we are very proud of here in Cardiff.”

After the excitement of the crowds, the couple watched performances from musicians and poets, met some famous local athletes and learn about the bodies that promote the Welsh language and cultural identity.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Their second outing in the capital was scheduled at Star Hub, a community and leisure center in the eastern suburb of Tremorfa where they were set to hear how the center helps young people excel through sports. It is a key area of Harry’s public work and the charity StreetGames, which the prince has regularly worked with, will show off some of their local programs.

Most Shocking Photos of the California Wildfires That Have Killed at Least 10 and Injured Dozens

At least 10 people are dead and thousands of homes and businesses have been destroyed after several wildfires continue to ravage California’s wine country, reports say.

Gov. Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency in several counties as the fires, which began on Sunday, swept through Northern California and urged Donald Trump to declare an official state of disaster to support local relief efforts.

“In less than 24 hours, more than 18 fires began burning in at least seven counties and have collectively burned more than 80,000 acres,” Brown wrote in a statement.

The flames broke out nearly all at once as residents fled the high-end region. The fires worsened overnight.

“I can’t shake hearing people scream in terror as the flames barreled down on us,” Noah Lowry, a former San Francisco Giants pitcher, told the Associated Press. Lowry said he fled his home with his wife, two daughters and 2-week-old son.

The fires continued well into Tuesday and Brown said that the flames grew so rapidly that residents had little time to leave their homes and flee to temporary shelters. He added that officials expect the number of deaths as a result of the fire to grow.

“Thousands have been made homeless. Many schools remain closed. Major roads were damaged or destroyed. The fire destroyed utility poles causing the loss of power to over 38,000 residents,” he wrote in the statement to Trump. “These fires have destroyed and continue to threaten critical infrastructure, including 80 communication towers, impacting essential services for thousands of people.”

Kim Hoe told the AP that he and his colleagues were staying at the Hilton Sonoma Wine Country when flames began to overtake the building.

“We just had to run and run,” he said. “It was full of smoke. We could barely breathe.”

Most of the damage was in Santa Rosa where the fires destroyed homes, melted the glass off of cars and turned wheels into liquid, according to the AP.

Photos of the devastation showed homes engulfed in flames and relief teams working to quell the fires. Pictures shared on Instagram showed flames on the horizon behind Disney California Adventure Park.

Adorable New Photos Of Will And Kate Will Give You Royal Wedding Déjà Vu

We’d all love to repeatedly relive the magic that was Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding. And it looks like they’ve done just that.

Will and the former Kate Middleton attended the Royal Ascot in Ascot, England on Tuesday in looks that were only slightly less fancy than what they wore to their nuptials in 2011.

Kate even stuck to wearing Alexander McQueen, the fashion house that designed her iconic wedding gown, for the occasion. She looked lovely in a white lace dress and matching fascinator. Will looked like a groom handsome in a suit and large top hat.

When Will and Kate weren’t busy looking painfully adorable, Kate was engaging in one of her other strong suits, managing to kiss people hello while also wearing an elaborate headpiece.

Can you say “vow renewals?”

Stunning Photos Bust Stereotypes Of What ‘Everyday Africa’ Looks Like

An Instagram account seeks to counter misconceptions about people and countries in Africa by sharing gorgeous photos of everyday life on the continent.

Everyday Africa, which started five years ago and now has about 340,000 followers, regularly publishes pictures from more than 30 photographers, most of whom are African themselves. Their work reflects a range of experiences on the continent: kids playing in a pool, young women taking selfies, people selling food at a street market.

The project, largely directed at an American audience, aims to use photography to upend stereotypes about Africa ― namely that it is mainly a region of war, poverty and safaris ― and instead celebrate its rich diversity. The continent does have 55 countries and more than 2,000 languages, after all.

“The way news functions is to focus on the extremes ― often it’s the very negative,” co-founder Peter DiCampo told HuffPost. “In the United States, you and I know daily life is daily life, whether that’s watching Netflix or cooking dinner. But without seeing those things in other parts of the world, we don’t naturally assume that they exist.

“The war and poverty parts are certainly present, but there’s so much else.”

The project just released a book featuring work from 30 of its photographers.

DiCampo, a documentary photographer, started the Everyday Africa project with writer Austin Merrill in 2012. They had both volunteered with the Peace Corps, in Ghana and Ivory Coast, respectively, and then worked on a reporting project together in Ivory Coast.

“Both of us found we were in this country we knew, focusing [for our assignments] only on refugees, finding victims of war, perpetrators of violence,” DiCampo told HuffPost. “But once we pulled out our phones to shoot in a free-flowing way, there was so much else, so much greater context, images that felt like a more complete story.”

They started uploading these images online, and Everyday Africa was born.

The founders, two white men who are also foreigners to Africa, have made it a “targeted mission” over the years to ensure that the project centers on photographers from African countries, DiCampo said. Today the majority of their contributing photographers are from the continent, and they aim to continue to expand the diversity of their contributors, namely to include more African women as well as people from a wider range of countries.

“The term ‘everyday’ is very loaded ― whose everyday are we talking about?” DiCampo said. “The best way to address that is to get a diverse group and say nothing is off limits, poverty or rich Africa.”

The group partnered with the nonprofit World Press Photo Foundation to launch The African Photojournalism Database last year, aiming to connect media groups to more photography freelancers from African countries.

Over the years, Everyday Africa has become more than just an Instagram account. It has inspired other social media users to start “everyday” photography projects. Now more than a dozen accounts with similar missions exist, some affiliated with the group, some not, all seeking to bust stereotypes about communities. They include Everyday Middle East and Everyday Black America, among others.

The founders have also created a nonprofit, the Everyday Projects, which runs education initiatives in the U.S. in partnership with the Pulitzer Center.

Since 2013, DiCampo and others have visited more than 2,500 students in classrooms, mainly in Chicago and Washington, D.C., to teach kids about the Everyday Africa project and stereotypes in the media. Teachers then use their curriculum ― free to the public ― over several weeks to teach students about media and photography, and to have students do their own “everyday” projects.

Everyday Africa is just one of many efforts that have cropped up on social media to push back against stereotypes of the continent. The Twitter hashtag #TheAfricaTheMediaNeverShowsYou, for instance, popularized in 2015, also sought to break stereotypes by sharing images of ordinary people’s lives.

Five years in, even though DiCampo says he still sees a lot of the same stereotypes about the African continent, initiatives such as that one give him hope.

“I think the journalism world is changing. There is so much more localized storytelling taking place,” he said. “And other platforms like ours where people can reach an audience, that will help those stereotypes dissipate.”

See more from Everyday Africa below and on the Everyday Projects website.

Katy Perry Wore Photos Of Manchester Bombing Victims On Her Dress

Katy Perry honored victims of the Manchester terror attack in song and on her sleeve.

She gave them a special salute Sunday while performing at One Love Manchester, the benefit concert organized after the May 22 suicide bombing that killed 22 people and injured at least 59 after an Ariana Grande concert at Manchester Arena.

The “Chained to the Rhythm” singer sang a few of her most iconic songs while wearing a white mini-dress over a turtleneck printed with photos of the victims.

Days before the event, which also featured Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber and Oasis’ Liam Gallagher, among others, Perry wrote she was “humbled to be a part” of the event. It ultimately raised over $ 3 million for the British Red Cross.

She also delivered a heartfelt message to the roughly 50,000 attendees, thanked Grande for her strength and encouraged everyone to operate from a place of love, even when that feels impossible.

“It’s not easy to always choose love, is it?” she said to a crowd of screaming fans. “Especially in moments like these, right? It can be the most difficult thing to do. But love conquers fear and love conquers hate. And this love that you choose will give you strength, and it’s our greatest power.”

Our greatest power, indeed.

Toddler Pays Tribute To Her Cancer Survivor Grandma In Awesome Photos

Three-year-old Scout Larson has made headlines thanks to her series of adorable photos that show the little girl dressed as as fierce female icons

For her latest shoot, the toddler emulated a special hero in her life: her grandmother, who is a breast cancer survivor.

Scout’s mom, Ashley, told HuffPost that her mother was the initial inspiration behind the famous icons shoot. She wanted to teach Scout about strong, courageous women as her grandmother battled cancer.

“From the beginning, I was planning on making Scout and my mom (”Nonnie”) each a photo book of all the recreated photos we shot,” Ashley told HuffPost. “I felt like it would only make sense to do photos of my mom as well since she’s the inspiration behind the entire project.”

The grandmother was a bit camera shy at first. “My mom is very selfless,” Ashley explained. “Being the center of attention is definitely not her favorite thing.”

Scout, however, loves posing for pictures and helped bring her out of her shell. The toddler particularly loved the matching shirts, which Ashley and her mom made for the grandma-granddaughter photo shoot.

“She had such a blast getting to shoot with her Nonnie,” Ashley said. “She was seriously thrilled to get to match with her.”

Today, Ashley’s mother is doing well. “She’s cancer free and back to doing whatever she feels like doing! Her hair is growing back in beautifully and her strength is coming back,” she said, adding that her mom has one surgery coming up, but they’re ready to face this last step together as a family.

“She’s the toughest lady I know,” Ashley added. “My sister and I are lucky to be a part of her. My babies and my nieces have the best Nonnie in the world.”

Ultimately, Scout’s mom wants people who look at these photos to see that women are fierce and strong.

“My mom, although she was sick, was my rock throughout the entire diagnosis and treatment. Fighting breast cancer, I know she was in pain and she was exhausted, but she never once showed that side to the little people who call her ‘Nonnie,’” Ashley said, adding that the grandmother continued to laugh and play with her grandchildren and took part in a normal Christmas celebration just a few weeks after having a double mastectomy.

“Being a hero doesn’t always mean you’re saving the world,” Ashley said. “Sometimes, just showing up for life and meeting the problems head on is enough.”

Stunning Photos Debunk The Myth That Queerness Is ‘Un-African’

As a kid, Nigerian-born photographer Mikael Chukwuma Owunna knew of no other LGBTQ Africans personally, and he saw none represented in popular culture or mainstream media. His family and community hardly spoke of people being queer, and when they did, the tone was nearly always one of disdain.

“Growing up being queer and Nigerian, I felt like I could not exist,” Owunna told HuffPost.

The artist was 15 years old, living in the United States, when he was outed as gay to his family, who blamed America and Western culture for his sexual identity. They proposed he return to Nigeria twice a year, hoping the culture would “cure” Owunna of his desire.

“They thought that since being gay was ‘un-African,’ re-exposing me to my culture would drive the gay out of me,” he said.

Three and a half years ago, Owunna decided to respond to this injurious claim ― that queerness and African-ness can not and do not overlap ― by capturing portraits of individuals who are proudly both African and queer, gay or transgender. “I’ve been fighting to reclaim these two parts of my identity for myself,” he explained. “To create a queer African home for myself and others where we can be LGBTQ, African and whole.”

The series, called “Limit(less),” is part– anthropological study and part– street style shoot, aiming to capture, as Owunna put it, what LGBTQ African immigrants look like when they feel free. It features 34 portraits, mostly taken in North America, each accompanied by an interview that probes deeply into the life and personal style of the subject.

In part, the work is inspired by a photo series by South African photographer Zanele Muholi called “Faces & Phases,” which Owunna saw at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh. The images depict black lesbians based in South Africa, their faces boldly featured against plain walls or patterned backdrops. “Seeing that work, I was so incredibly moved,” Owunna said. “Especially coming from my own experience of feeling completely invisible and erased as a queer African person.”

With “Limit(less),” Owunna attempts to challenge the binary understanding that sets queerness at odds with the African identity. Yet it was important to him that the project not cast homophobia as something innately African. The ignorance and hatred many young, queer Africans now face, Owunna explained, stems from the legacy of European colonialism, which, he said, “has brainwashed us to believe that being LGBTQ is somehow against our indigenous cultural identities.”

Owunna cited Queen Anna Nzinga ― a 17th-century African leader who insisted that the male harem who served her dress in women’s clothing ― as an example of Africa’s early openness in regard to gender expression.

Since Owunna had only met two other LGBTQ Africans in his entire life, he located the majority of his subjects on social media. When a potential subject expressed interest, Owunna reached out for a phone or Skype conversation, during which he would explain the concept of his work in full.

Most importantly, he ensured the subjects were entirely comfortable participating in such a visible project, given the potential safety concerns that could arise as a result. “Even though we live in diaspora, there are still very real fears and dangers for us as LGBTQ African people both inside and outside of our communities,” he said.

The photographer then flew to visit each subject and spent the weekend in his, her or their home, spending a day getting to know each other before actually starting the shoot. The participants were also given interview questions beforehand regarding their personal style, their relationship with their families and what they might say to people who think being LGBTQ is “un-African”?

The subjects’ written responses are as compelling and moving as the images themselves.

Em, a genderqueer Nigerian living in America, responded to the last question above with: “You’re un-African for believing that all Africans are this monolithic group of people, cis and heteronormative. We are dynamic, bold, and beautiful and queer. Our Africanness is only stronger with this identity because every day we breathe, especially for African trans folk, we are resisting and revolutionary. That’s pretty damn African to me.”

While fashion is seen by some as frivolous or superficial, Owunna’s subjects and their thoughtful answers illuminate how clothing can not only express identity but inform it. Netsie, a queer Ethiopian-Namibian woman in America, described how her personal style rejects the roles often foisted upon women of color.

“From a young age, women are taught that they have no choice in who looks at them, and so often, we are held responsible for what other people perceive,” Netsie said. “We are taught to be presentable, not just for business meetings, but potential friends, mates and assaulters. At the same time, we are taught never to look threatening, or look back at the people looking at us. We are denied the verb, and forced into the noun. Fuck that. I’m a hard femme with an hourglass silhouette, a goodwill budget, and a firm grasp of anti-capitalist rhetoric. I wear whatever makes me feel comfortable and powerful and safe.”

Reactions to “Limit(less),” Owunna told HuffPost, have been overwhelmingly positive, especially from LGBTQ African immigrants themselves. “I feel like there is such a hunger for us to see ourselves and people like us,” the artist said. “And to especially see other LGBTQ African people in a space of empowerment, loving ourselves.”

Owunna’s contributions to visualizing a population that has for too long gone unrepresented are staggering, and he is not slowing down anytime soon. The artist is en route to creating the largest digital archive of LGBTQ African immigrant narratives in existence. Having worked primarily in North America so far, he’s headed to Europe ― home to over 6 million African immigrants.

The artist is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to finance his journeys to Belgium, France, Portugal, Sweden and the U.K., gathering more stories and images every stop of the way. To continue the project, he needs $ 10,000 by June 8 ― at time of publication, he has raised just over $ 5,000.

Owunna looks forward to growing his archive, finally providing visibility for the next generation growing up African and queer. “With each click of my camera,” he said, “I strive to capture my vision of what a free world can look like for black queer and trans people. And to show that this free world already exists inside each and every one of us.”

See more of Owunna’s “Limit(less)” on the project’s website.

32 Vintage Photos Of Prince Philip Looking SO Sharp

It’s official: Prince Philip is retiring. Buckingham Palace announced Thursday morning that starting this fall, the 96-year-old Duke of Edinburgh will stop carrying out public engagements.

When it comes to style recognition, Philip, who is best known for his one-liners, often takes a back seat to Queen Elizabeth II or younger British royals like the Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry.

But just like his wife, Philip has always had a strong sense of style, whether on official occasions, during polo matches or, you know, hanging out with the Beatles. He was named one of GQ UK’s best-dressed men in Britain in 2014, but his dapper days go way further back.

Although we’ll be seeing less of this long-serving consort, we have plenty of opportunities to both honor him and take style major style inspiration from his life by way of these amazing vintage photos. Check out 32 of our favorite looks below.

Here Are 25 Incredible Photos Of Celebrities Partying at Studio 54

Getting into Studio 54 in the 1970s was a nearly impossible endeavor. Marc Benecke, doorman for the disco club, would stand on a stepping stool and select club candidates from the crowd. He compared this process to “mixing a salad.” Nevertheless, “54” lured celebrities, socialites, athletes, and artists from around the globe. Andy Warhol once said, “The key of the success of Studio 54 is that it’s a dictatorship at the door and a democracy on the dance floor.” For the 40th anniversary of the club’s opening, we’re giving you a peek at the lucky few (celebrities, of course) who actually made it inside.

Woman Takes Engagement Photos With Her One True Love: Popeyes Chicken

When it comes to being engaged, Elyse Chelsea Clark is throwing caution to the wind, er, wing.

The New Orleans bartender is such a fan of Popeyes Chicken that she decided to do a series of engagement photos with her favorite fast food.

Then she posted the poultry-centered pics on Facebook with this note: “I’m finally engaged!”

The Popeyes engagement pics taken by photographer Whitney Tucker show Clark looking romantically at chicken boxes…

Strolling through the park with the object of her affection …

And smooching that box with the same passion that is typically reserved for love’s kiss.

Oh, and she likes the biscuits too.

The photos might be funny, but Clark’s passion for Popeyes is real and true.

“I have a really big love for Popeyes,” she told the New Orleans Times-Picayne. “I eat it all the time.”

The chain responded to Clark’s engagement spread with this tweet.

Hairstylist’s Touching Photos Capture The Raw Reality Of Depression

One hairstylist proved to be a cut above when she helped a client experiencing a mental health condition.

In February, a woman walked into The Salon, a haircut location inside of Ulta Beauty in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, and began pulling every “All Soft” product by Redken off the shelf. Kate Langman, an employee the salon, noticed what the customer was doing and approached her to see if she needed any help.

The two began to talk, and Langman soon learned that the woman had depression. She hadn’t left her bed in six months due to her mental health condition, she told Langman, and had neglected to wash or brush her hair.

Instead, the woman had pulled her hair back into a bun, which over time became a giant, matted knot.

Langman offered to do the woman’s hair, making her an appointment for the very next day.

“I have a very close family member that went through similar [mental health struggles],” Langman told The Huffington Post. “If I would have let her walk away with all of those products that she spent a hundreds of dollars on, she would have gotten nowhere — which she would have possibly viewed as another failure for her.”

But the woman didn’t show up for the appointment. Two weeks later, she called and booked another appointment. And once again, she was a no-show.

“It actually, kind of, broke my heart,” Langman wrote on Facebook.

Then, on March 9, the woman came into the salon and asked Langman if she could do her hair.

“When she walked in that [day], I had a feeling of relief,” Langman told HuffPost. “That she still had the drive to feel like herself again.”

Langman worked with the woman for over eight hours, brushing, cutting and coloring her hair. The results were phenomenal.

After the experience, Langman posted the story to Facebook, where it went viral, receiving over 16,000 shares and 35,000 likes.

“By the end of this service, I could see the sparkle in her eyes,” Langman wrote in her post.

The anonymous client’s symptoms aren’t uncommon for the more than 300 million people worldwide who experience depression. The disorder can deplete a person’s energy and motivation, making simple routines like fixing your hair feel like an excruciating task.

Langman says she’s happy that she could be there for the woman, who confirmed the story to The Huffington Post.

“I wanted her to know that there is someone that is here to help her,” Langman said. “No matter the circumstances. She needed someone she could count on and I wanted to be that person for her.”

Sex-Positive Photos Will Inspire You To Give Your Butt The Love It Deserves

Warning: This article contains many images of butts. Many indeed.

The Fader magazine recently recruited New York-based photographer Caroline Tompkins for a very serious mission: they needed butt photos and lots of them.

The photos were meant for the magazine’s Love & Sex issue, specifically a piece called “What a Butt Wants,” filled with ass-centric wisdom from experts including a personal trainer, an acupuncturist, and a licensed esthetician.

It was 2014 that was playfully dubbed “The Year of the Butt” around the internet, honoring women like Nicki Minaj and Kim Kardashian as its patron saints. Yet many interpreted the designation ― which, in part, correlated to an increase in surgical butt enhancements ― as pop culture appropriating, fetishizing and exploiting black women’s bodies, long criticized for being curvaceous.

Tompkins worked with Fader’s photo director Emily Keegin and fashion editor Shibon Kennedy to create the series, aptly titled “Butts,” featuring a gorgeous melange of derrieres mugging for the camera.

The series breaks with the exoticizing male gaze often employed by mainstream culture. Instead of privileging a “Platonic Ass,” Tompkins pictures a variety of rears from individuals of all ages, races, genders and sizes. Butts are flat and fat, furry and bare, shiny and matte ― the list goes on ― proving that butts are not a hot commodity or a passing trend, but a real, smushy, sexy body part that deserves love and attention.

“[Fader] presented [the series] as one part fashion, one part service (how to make your butt happy), and one part just cool sexy butts,” Tompkins explained to website It’s Nice That. “I’ve been making a lot of personal work about female desire and sex lately, so it was super flattering for this assignment to become an extension of that.”

Tompkins asked friends and people she spotted on Instagram to take part in the shoot, enlisting a total of 12 models to rock 29 looks. “I got a lot of cool butt pics texted/emailed to me that week for sure,” she wrote in an email to The Huffington Post.

“We were mostly looking for variety ― size, shape, color, hair/no hair, etc. We were also really happy to get a couple in the mix, as we didn’t want to ask anyone to get down and dirty in anyone else’s butt unless they were already dating each other, you know?”

For the shoot itself, Tompkins took inspiration from artists including Whitney Hubbs, Collier Schorr, Jo Ann Callis and Harry Callahan, as well as snapshots culled from amateur porn archives.

The resulting spread features butts in pants, butts in skirts, butts in thongs, butts in the buff. There are also butts in leggings, butts in fishnets, butts with tattoos, and butts pressed against glass. A true visual butt buffet, the playful series lives where sexy meets silly, the two juxtaposed like cheeks on a rear.

The images perfectly compliment Fader’s fruitful guide to butt love and maintenance. “My favorite is the last part about buttocks sugaring,” Tompkins added. “That’s all I’m going to say because y’all should check it out. Also, if you’re wondering how we made the butts shiny, it’s mostly baby oil and Vaseline.”

Head to The Fader for more butt play.

Commanding Photos Chronicle 20 Years Of Protests In New York

Donald Trump’s presidency has fueled a surge of new activists, eager to defend the rights of immigrants, Muslims, women, children, LGBTQ individuals and all who feel threatened by the current administration. Protests have sprung up in cities across the nation since his inauguration, demonstrating that power exists not just in the White House but on the streets.

Images of marches, rallies and demonstrations of all kinds are, today, relentlessly documented and shared on social media, endowing ephemeral happenings with permanent, material form. Yet long before the internet, protests were still part of the fabric of American democracy, and devoted photojournalists ensured that activist uprisings were not easily forgotten. The main difference, however, is that most of these pre-internet photos remain largely unseen.

An exhibition titled “Whose Streets? Our Streets!” on view at the Bronx Documentary Center honors the legacy of protest photography in New York, zooming in on the years between 1980 and 2000. The show, featuring the work of 37 independent photojournalists, is co-curated by Meg Handler, former photo editor of The Village Voice; historian Tamar Carroll, author of Mobilizing New York: AIDS, Antipoverty and Feminist Activism; and Michael Kamber, founder of the Bronx Documentary Center (BDC).

The exhibition picks up in 1980, when New Yorkers were grappling with economic upheaval, shifting demographics, the AIDS crisis, the culture wars, environmental unease, and the ongoing struggle for equal rights. Many of the issues precipitating these images ― from police brutality to gentrification to a woman’s right to choose ― are still being fought out in the streets today.

“Whose Streets?” features snapshots from a variety of moments, causes and perspectives. The photograph above, for example, shot by Ricky Flores in Brooklyn in 1990, depicts a crowd of predominantly white men deriding a black protest. The demonstration occurred after Bensonhurst resident Keith Mondello, a white man, was acquitted of murder after shooting 16-year-old Yusef Hawkins, who was black.

Hawkins had gone to the mostly Italian Brooklyn neighborhood to look at a used car, and was attacked and shot to death by a mob of eight white men. Although Mondello was considered the ringleader of the group, he did not fire the fatal shot, and thus was convicted only on lesser counts. Black protesters took to the streets in defiance of the verdict, and the photo depicts white Bensonhurst residents mocking the demonstrators, with one man holding a watermelon above his head.

Nina Berman’s 1989 photo above depicts pro-choice protestors as they stormed the Brooklyn Bridge on July 3, 1989. The march occurred just after the Supreme Court ruled to “uphold a Missouri state ban on the use of public employees and facilities for performing abortions,” reversing elements of Roe v. Wade. Police arrested 24 pro-choice advocates that day, including activist Mary Lou Greenberg, marking a crucial moment in the battle for reproductive rights.

Certain elements of the featured photos distinguish them from the more contemporary crop scattered across various social media feeds and timelines. The style of police uniforms, outdated haircuts, the overwhelming lack of smartphones being brandished in the air. Yet, for the most part, these scenes could just as well be taking place today, when the majority of social injustices plaguing our country are just as prevalent as they were over 30 years ago.

For the many people today still learning how to incorporate acts of resistance into their daily lives, head to the Bronx Documentary Center to see how people have been showing up and speaking out for decades. The photographs depict anger, resolution, hope and solidarity, written on the faces and bodies of countless individuals whose names often go unrecognized. The images, however, will ensure they’re not forgotten.

“Whose Streets? Our Streets! New York City: 1980–2000” is on view at the Bronx Documentary Center until March 5, 2017.

Amazing Dance Photos From Musicals That Won Best Picture

Whether “La La Land” — and its history-making turn this awards season — has you celebrating or bemoaning its winks at classic American musicals, there’s no denying the Damien Chazelle–directed film has made its mark. It’s up for a record-tying 14 awards at the 89th annual Academy Awards on Feb. 26, including Best Picture.

It isn’t common for a production with singing and dancing to snag the Oscars’ top spot — the last to do so was “Chicago” in 2003. We wanted to look back at some of the other movie-musicals that took home the Best Picture statue over the years. Here are four of them:

“The Broadway Melody” (1929)

This was one of the first musicals to be seen on screen and the first sound film to ever take home the Best Picture statue at the 2nd Academy Awards. “The Broadway Melody” remains only one of three films in Oscars history to take home Best Picture and no other awards.

”The Great Ziegfeld” (1936)

This flashy film was a cinematic adaptation of Broadway’s “Ziegfeld Follies.” It took home Best Picture along with Best Actress and Best Dance Direction at the 9th Academy Awards, but critics at the time called it “a bit wearing” for its length and the story “fragmentary and, in some places, confused.”

”An American in Paris” (1951)

Imagine a movie today where 17 minutes of screen time was devoted to a single dance. “An American in Paris” pulled it off, with its famous ballet scene making it a memorable winner of the 24th Academy Awards. The film stands the test of time, boasting a 95 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

“West Side Story” (1961)

The skirts! The tough guys! The finger snaps! The film adaptation of the “Romeo and Juliet”-esque 1957 Broadway musical won 10 of its 11 nominated categories at the 34th Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Director, Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress. It’s the winningest musical in Oscars history — and to that, we say, Krup you!

The Pitti Uomo 91 Diaries: Stefano Ricci, Concept Korea, and Photos from the Fashion Front Lines

2017-01-12-1484213010-2845160-PITTIUOMO91_THETRADESHOW055.jpg

As soon as I met British war photographer Guy Martin, my view of fashion here at Pitti Uomo changed. There is something incredibly powerful, a spark alive in those who report from the front lines, and combined with the natural kindness photographers possess, Martin immediately dissolved all my natural defenses. Not to mention that when I started to see the menswear fashion arena through his eyes, I realized that it too is a war zone of sorts, a battle for who can make the world more stylish, and conquer the most fashionista hearts. More on Martin a bit later, but first things first. Starting from the kickoff show of the day for me, the Concept Korea event.

2017-01-12-1484212676-8770864-ConceptKorea_BmuettebyByungmunSeo023.jpg

Concept Korea: Bmuet(te) and Ordinary People, and kimchi wings.

As soon as the Bmuet(te) men, and women, started to walk down the worn-out cobblestones runway of the Dogana in Florence, I felt like Neo had found his Darcy-like counterpart, in a next installment of the Matrix set in Victorian England. I loved the black to grey to white color palette, and once my eyes stopped concentrating on the endless cool details — like Elizabethan-style collars, strings hanging from shirts like those worn by Orthodox Jews and those gorgeous flat lens sunglasses — I realized the full cinematic impact of the collection. To say that I loved the womenswear influences used for menswear here would be an understatement. Extra-long sleeves, Victorian rounded shoulders and even skirts for men were all phenomenal, especially because each look could be — and at times was — worn by women too. I think Bryung-mun Seo and Ji-na Um are my new fashion idols.

2017-01-12-1484212803-4574110-ConceptKorea_OrdinaryPeople043.jpg

Ordinary People by Hyeong-cheol Jang also required a period of adjustment on my part, once his more colorful-dressed models started sliding down the runway. After viewing so much black and white, the studded black palazzo pants in velvet and poet shirt in what Benjamin Moore calls “Corlsbud Canyon” orange needed a deep breath from yours truly. But heeding the advice of the beautiful Andie MacDowell, who made us all breathe during a recent interview in Dubai, I found myself inhaling and exhaling deeply, only to discover that Ordinary People had some of the same themes I’d loved so much in the previous brand. Black velvet suits with cropped tight trousers, pearl studded sweaters and even a bright varnish green leather jacket could all be unisex. And although I’ll skip the Ed Snowden look sported by some of the male models, I may just become a new Ordinary People customer too. Plus, you gotta love the name, of my favorite film growing up, directed by Robert Redford!

Class act alert: The Concept Korea presentation ended with a wonderful snack of kimchi wings and Korean sushi, to be washed down with a special cocktail, framed by a slice of pineapple.

2017-01-12-1484212642-4054464-IMG_3865.jpg

Guy Martin and the impossibility of living down one’s incredible act of resilience.

When I interviewed photojournalist Guy Martin, I tried to avoid bringing up the 2011 deadly attack which resulted in Tim Hetherington’s and Chris Hondros’ death, and left Martin seriously injured and in the care of Libyan doctors. But although when meeting Martin today one could never imagine what the young photographer has been through, there is a depth to his persona, a wonderfully refreshing calm about him that points to the kind of person who has survived a great deal. It’s impossible, I think, to separate the man from the photojournalist, and that photojournalist, who went through so much and still manages to entertain a conversation with a man at a party who wants to talk selling Swedish underwear to Saudi customers. Yes, I witnessed Martin kindly engage as one business owner tried to pick his brain — as a photographer who has worked extensively in the Middle East — for enticing customers from Saudi Arabia to his brand.

But meeting Martin also made me look at fashion differently, particularly the shows. We stand in lines outside in the cold for up to an hour, awaiting to be let into this magical world where in five minutes we watch a presentation and then it’s all gone. Armies of fashionistas pose with serious, at times threatening faces while photographers capture their looks, and models reach the “front lines” of photographers at the end of the catwalk eager to shoot the perfect shot of them. Shoot, front lines, armies of fashionistas, the lingo doesn’t stray far from war terms you see.

But much more on Martin and his project with Pitti Immagine, through a collaboration with nineteensixtyeight, in a full interview to follow next week.

2017-01-12-1484213062-269206-IMG_3816.jpg

Stefano Ricci: A timeless designer presents his perfectly classic line inside an iconic fashion room.

Perhaps it was the gods of fashion that allowed me to view Stefano Ricci‘s presentation for a select few lucky members of the press, inside the iconic Sala Bianca of Palazzo Pitti. Or maybe it was a great combination of professional publicists who managed to squeeze me in and find me a seat in the front row of this spectacle of beauty, style and ageless class. Whatever the cause, I felt like I experienced fashion history in the making. The Sala Bianca of Palazzo Pitti is where the Made in Italy brand started, back in 1952. And the setting hasn’t be utilized for fashion shows since 1982. So it was only natural that a legendary menswear brand from Florence should re-christen the venue so important for Italian fashion, on their own 45th Anniversary celebration.

Adding to the magic of the day, I went to watch the Stefano Ricci runway show with Guy Martin and knowing he was in the photographers’ pit made me look at the event through different eyes. In fact, I took this shot of one of the little boys who showed along with the adults, and saw him in all his vulnerability as he walked away from the clicks of the cameras. A bit shaken for the wear yet still incredibly professional for his age.

2017-01-12-1484213102-3894095-IMG_3815.jpg

The collection was of course phenomenal. Full of what men really want to wear, to the office, on an evening out, to a gala, and even on their days off — Stefano Ricci represents iconic Italian style. And the fact that real men, some with grey hair and all possessing their own individual style and gait, showed the clothes only made the experience more wonderful. Oh, and someone said the room was decorated with 30,000 white roses, lining walls and nestled in giant vases. Thirty thousand, wrap your head around that!

2017-01-12-1484213153-3209921-PaulSmithbrPittiImmagineSpecialGuest002.jpg

PS by Paul Smith, because a man needs to be able to wear a suit while riding a bike!

The PS by Paul Smith presentation saw us all walking through a pink neon lit doorway crowned by the designer’s famous initial. Quintessential Paul Smith of course. But once inside, what awaited the fashion crowds were street wearable clothing pieces, like light reflecting windbreakers and suits that could be worn by everyday working guys, who ride their bikes to the office and don’t want to worry about looking like the male equivalent of Bridget Jones at her worst upon arrival.

Smith is smart, as he is kind, and he knows his customer whom I believe likes to look good, but also be practical. Details have always been the best the designer has to offer, from his quintessentially colorful suit linings to the way his hems are stitched and this collection of active wear, for lack of a better term, is no exception. Plus, the dancers, acrobats and all around cool guys showing off the line made me yearn to go dancing.

Innocence and fragility by Chabaud, a classic scent.

Between shows, I felt like I needed a moment of zen. And I always find the best relaxation in scents. So I visited the Hi Beauty section of the Pitti Uomo fair, inside the Fortezza da Basso and headed for a stand I’d briefly stopped by the day before. Sophie Chabaud is the “nose” of Chabaud, a Maison de parfum from Montpellier and she kindly showed me around the line. I found respite in their “Innocente Fragilité”, a white flower scent made of a blend of jasmine, orange blossom and gardenia. OK, time to get back to work now.

Conrad and Louise Gonzales were married in 1974. Forty-two years later, the couple recreated their wedding photos ― and they look even more in love now than they did back then.

In a BuzzFeed video posted Monday, Conrad and Louise recount their decades-long love story, from when they first met in a high school accounting class, to their first date touring a college in Pasadena, California, to their July 6, 1974 wedding day and some of the relationship hurdles they hit later on.

While prepping for the anniversary photo shoot, the couple leafed through their wedding album, reminiscing about the big day all those years ago

“It also reminds me how blessed I am that after 42 years I’m still with my wife,” Conrad said after seeing the photos side-by-side. “I thank God that he allowed me to find this woman and enjoy a lifetime together.”

Watch the heartwarming video above.

Photos Shine A Spotlight On Just How Beautiful Traffic Lights Can Be

These photographs are simply traffic-stopping.

Lucas Zimmermann’s long exposures of a set of traffic lights near Weimar in central Germany are going viral, for all the right reasons.

The 23-year-old Bauhaus University student actually snapped the images in 2013, but they gained international exposure this week after Reddit user dittidot posted one of the pictures online.

Zimmermann, who is studying visual communications with a focus on photography, said he came up with the concept in a “purely intuitive” way.

“I was lucky to be at the right place at the right time,” he told The Huffington Post this week.

See more of Zimmermann’s photographs on his Behance account, Facebook page and website.

Stunning Photos Show Evolution Of The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show

The day we’ve all been waiting for has finally arrived: The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show airs tonight.

Based on photos that have emerged in the days since this year’s show filmed, it’s evident that the flashy production, which has only gotten more elaborate over the years, maintains its reputation in 2016.

But if there’s one thing that has gone unchanged since the show’s humble beginnings, it’s the models’ excitement about walking that coveted runway. Kendall Jenner has been quoted repeatedly calling the show her ultimate dream, and the same goes for best friend and fellow supermodel Gigi Hadid.

The iconic models who came before have held the show at that same regard. Heidi Klum credits the show with making her a “household name.” Adriana Lima, the brand’s longest running model, was quoted at age 18 as saying she thinks the “dream of a lot of girls” would be to work with the brand.

So, while the show has changed drastically over the years into the mega-produced holiday spectacle it’s known as today, the feeling that it’s the ultimate career milestone for a model remains beautifully unchanged.

Check out some of your favorite supermodels in all their VS glory through the years below.

Your Living Family Tree: Keeping your family together forever through print, photos, sound, and video

Your Living Family Tree: Keeping your family together forever through print, photos, sound, and video

A Living Family Tree-Starting Today! You know what a regular family tree is. A fact sheet that goes back until your roots disappear or they have been eaten by a wild pig. They’re great to read to see if knighthood or dukedom is in your blood-or if a horse thief hangs from a stout branch! But what if you could create a new, growing tree that started right now, expanded for 100 or 1000 years, and drew every one of your living relatives-plus those yet to live-into a warm, tightly-bound clan? You can. You have almost every tool at hand because of the extraordinary electronic revolution we are experiencing. It’s the 21st century, the miracle era of easy and inexpensive digital preservation. Time to get three-dimensional! Include the old-fashioned family tree but why not start collecting the actual words, voices, and actions (almost the souls) of every mem-ber of your living family through sound, jpgs, podcasts, videos, and digital writing? Most important, almost everything can be stored at a family website, to be instantly enjoyed by your cousin cross country or your great-grandson’s daughter 60 or 260 years from now, after she’s born and is looking back for inspiration or to see what her ancestors (that’s you!) did and thought. That’s about as close to magic as we can get-and you (or somebody in your present family) can make it happen! This book gives you step-by-step, how-to details, written by a straightforward, funny non-techie! “This book is a must read for anyone interested in preserving their personal history for future generations.” Tamara Lipori, author of A PSRO Guide to Scrapbook Retailing Gordon Burgett has written 36 published books (plus 1700+ freelance articles) and has offered 2000+ paid spoken presentations. His family tree includes one knight (Sir Lancelot) and seven knaves. In part, he created the “living family tree” concept to help his kin grow better branches. Why else? See www.

The first episode aired in October 2007, and although everyone in the Kardashian-Jenner clan has changed their beauty looks extensively throughout the past decade, Khloé has had one of the biggest evolutions. Her hair has gone from dark brown to the blondest of blonde. It’s been stick straight (hi, 2007), jet black, and, thanks in no small part to hairstylist Jen Atkin, effortlessly wavy. Ryan Reynolds’ Friend Tried To Sell Photos Of Baby James, And It Was Crushing

Ryan Reynolds experienced a betrayal of a particularly hurtful kind after the birth of his daughter, James.

“A guy that I’d known for my whole life, one of my closest friends growing up, he had been shopping pictures of my baby around,” Reynolds told GQ for the magazine’s latest issue. “I kind of got in front of it, which is good. But it was a slightly dark period. A bad couple of weeks.”

The “guy” was a close friend of Reynolds who he has known for 25 years.

“It was like a death. It was like one of those devastating things to find out,” he said, adding that the person did it for the money and didn’t think he’d get caught. “It was, like, so kind of shocking. There isn’t really a conversation to have. It’s just, ‘Oh, well, now I’m never going to see you or talk to you again, unfortunately.’ That’s kind of how it worked out.”

Fatherhood has been a life-changer for the “Deadpool” star, who welcomed James with wife Blake Lively last December.

“I’ve learned that an inordinate amount of clichés are completely true,” he added. “Like, there is this kid here that I would walk through fire for. Or, maybe not fire. Like, a very hot pavement, I’d walk through. A shag rug.”

Trillions of Digital Photos Stored in “Clouds” But “Inkdot” Brings Them Back to Stunning Life on New Mediums

2015-09-04-1441382138-6662919-8.jpeg

Photos, photos everywhere…and, not one to hold. Inkdot’s changing that!

With the NFL season kicking off this week (September 10), it means summer is evolving into colorful Autumn, and people will be snapping photos of sports events, favorite concerts, fall weddings, first day of school for the kiddos, cute pets and breathtaking travel scenes, while taking the ubiquitous selfie. We just can’t seem to get enough of taking photos. Yet, the oldest known photograph with a person was only taken in 1838, depicting a man in Paris getting his shoes shined.

2015-09-04-1441383063-6230220-Boulevard_du_Temple_by_Daguerre.jpg

Boulevard du Temple – by Louis Daguerre in Paris 1838

Now it’s estimated there’ll be one trillion photos taken this year, and the total number of photos stored may reach 4.9 trillion in 2017. Hello, that’s a lot of terabytes! Indeed, the recent World Photo Day (August 19) underscored our growing fascination with snapping everything and everybody.

And although eccentric British photographer David Bailey once suggested that it “takes a lot of imagination to be a good photographer,” quality photography has indeed come to us masses.

John & Nate Larkin bring memorable digital images to life in dramatic mediums

Chicago-based John Larkin, co-founder with his brother Nate of cutting edge and specialized online print company “Inkdot,” says that the invention of camera phones, especially the iPhone, has changed the whole game.

Every day there’s an incredible photo that comes through that was taken on an iPhone. Now everyone is able to capture quality shots, with a professional look about them. They don’t have to carry around a big camera, so it’s super convenient, they’re grabbing these spontaneous, quality moments and the images deserve to come to life again, in a tactile, creative and fun way — instead of only being shared on Facebook or Instagram.

2015-09-04-1441385735-9241578-14.jpeg

Sunrise captured on 24×36 Wood Print

The Larkin brothers were introduced to me by an associate of mine and a marketing expert Jonathan Stuart, whom I’ve worked with on several high profile athlete blogs for international platforms. Jonathan, whose Greay Area consultancy service helps clients cut through the noise, says the key to Inkdot’s success is its focus on creating distinctive and premium products, as opposed to churning out sub-par prints like many online photo-printing-sites.

So I checked out some of Inkdot’s unique products and discovered that by uploading one of your cool digital images from Instagram, Facebook or your computer to their website, you can pick hip “material” options for sporting your great image, including: immortalize your favorite event (like a sports score celebration or outstanding concert) by getting the shot printed on cool coasters or on a square print; create a memorable piece of art out of your stored wedding pix or recent vacation photos printed directly into natural wood; you can embed your back-to-school kids’ images off your phone into aluminum, giving it a long-lasting vibrancy; better still, do yourself a solid, grab a cute pet photo, and impress your lady by splashing her pooch’s mug on a throw pillow or tote bag; or to really rock out, use Stiick, a special magnetic frame to show off your special photos.

2015-09-04-1441386573-8522820-5.jpeg

Wedding bliss and shenanigans on Coasters!

2015-09-04-1441386693-4239490-6.jpeg

Holding a vacation memory on a Square Paper Print

Nate Larkin offers:

People take photos and the only feedback is from sharing on social media platforms and getting likes. But with Inkdot, people can see their photos printed in a tactile, tangible way, something you can hold in your hand, and easily put up in your house, something you can experience every day. The nice thing about the Wood Print is that it comes ready to hang, you don’t need to put it in a frame and pay extra. And, our distinctive printed products return you to that memory, and help bring the stories behind the photos back to life again.

The Larkins, who have a wide-format printing background working in their father’s business, feel they’ve caught the right wave with their business, brought on by the affordability and progress of printer technology and the growth of high quality photos.

John explains, “We didn’t want to focus on printing every photo but wanted to print those unique images — while also thinking, let’s pair it with some really cool, high-end materials.” Nate smoothly continues, “We were really testing the assumption that you can only print on certain materials, like paper. By using different grades of wood, we were creating our own medium to print on.”

2015-09-04-1441388355-7595859-13_noborder.jpg

On the wall, Golden Gate Bridge captured on 24×36 Wood Print

In their ongoing goal to create new mediums and a new sort of art, the brothers also feature select artists and designers whose related products are available to customers in Inkdot’s “marketplace.” John explains, “By hosting different digital artists, we’re promoting their designs to work in combination with what our clients want.”

But the Larkins have also glommed onto another change, as Nate suggests:

There’s been a lull in printing, with people storing all those digital photos. But now it’s coming back to people remembering those photo albums they used to go through at their parents’ house, and now wanting to experience that again. We see this push back to printing physical photos. And the response we’re getting, especially with material like our Wood Prints and Metal Prints, people are blown away by the quality. We’re not here to print every photo that’s taken on an iPhone. We’re here to print those special photos that mean a lot, and need to be shared with loved ones, friends and family.

2015-09-04-1441388992-8107099-1.jpeg

Sharing special and fun photos on 12×12 Wood Prints

Speaking of family, the Larkin brothers pride themselves on being a family business with John adding:

We’re constantly making sure our products are the best and really take satisfaction in what we do. It’s a family business and we’re going to be around for awhile. We want to grow an awareness about what’s possible. People often leave their photos in the ‘App’ and they don’t actually have the original image stored anywhere. Or, they still aren’t sure that they can print their photos from Instagram. Or that iPhone quality is now good enough to blow up to 24 x 36 size print. So bring us your wedding, memorable event, travel, cute kid or pet images, and we’ll creatively bring your stories and memories back to life.

Follow Inkdot on Instagram and Facebook.

14 Amazing Vintage Photos of Cindy Crawford, Kate Moss, and More ’90s Supermodels

Seeing Cindy Crawford, Helena Christensen, and other ’90s supermodels reunite for a pretty epic photo shoot yesterday got us feeling a bit nostalgic for the days when Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, Linda Evangelista, and Christy Turlington sashayed down the runways, wore the most amazing clothes, and basically made life look like the ultimate party. They were the OG Girl Squad!

Today’s top models, such as Kendall Jenner, Cara Delevingne, Karlie Kloss, and Gigi Hadid are carrying on the torch of the model sisterhood (with a much appreciated dose of Taylor Swift!)—and the best part is: We all get to watch it happen on Instagram.

But since Instagram wasn’t around in the ’90s (can you imagine?!), here are 14 vintage photos of your favorite ’90s fashion plates that’ll have you wanting to tap “like” over and over again:

These Photos Capture The Spirit Of New Orleans, 10 Years After Katrina

It’s been a slow recovery since Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans 10 years ago, but residents are hopeful that the city is returning to its roots.

New Orleanians are repopulating their city, reestablishing festive traditions, repairing historic landmarks, rebuilding churches and reinvigorating the educational system.

Things like “Who dat Saints” and Mardi Gras have always been staples in its rich history — but it is the people who have undeniably made New Orleans the cultural hub it is today.

President Obama described the city as a place where “the jazz makes you cry and the funerals make you dance,” during his speech in New Orleans on Thursday.

Here are 35 uplifting photos that show resilient New Orleanians and capture the spirt of the city, one decade after Katrina:

In Venice, Politics vs. Photos

Mystery and intrigue may be synonymous with the city of Venice, but the latest imbroglio between politicians and preservationists there seems a little more ham-handed.

Why have you banned this photo exhibit,” tweeted Venetophile and publisher JoAnn Locktov to Luigi Brugnaro, mayor of Venice, on August 14. “Are you so scared of the truth?

Yes, it is true, we are afraid of how you know how to mystify reality,” shot back the mayor in Italian.

At issue is an exhibition, postponed by the mayor, of photographs depicting cruise ships that grotesquely dwarf the architecture of St. Mark’s Square and other Venetian landmarks. More than 500 ships dock there annually, flooding the city’s streets and canals with tourists. And there’s talk of dredging the city’s canals to accommodate even more.

“On some days, there are seven to 10 cruises that can easily mean more than 20,000 visitors in a day for seven to eight months,” says Venice-based photographer Marco Secchi. “Venice has a major issue with mass tourism — last year there were 27 millions visitors.”

The new mayor, elected in June on a platform to keep the port in Venice, canceled the photo exhibition at a gallery in the venerated Doge’s Palace. It was to feature works by Gianni Berengo Gardin, who’s been hailed by the U.K.’s Telegraph as Italy’s greatest photographer. Brugnaro evidently intends to display them later, together with an exhibit of his own plans for dredging the city’s lagoon and canals. It’s caused quite the outcry.

If the photos do not represent your reality, let the people decide,” tweeted the San Francisco-based Locktov.

You aren’t the people,” replied the mayor. “You see only yourself and your friends.”

“Friends” seems a near-Freudian slip in wording. The city’s port comes under control of the Venice Port Authority (VPA), with former Mayor of Venice Costa Paolo its president. In 1997, the VPA set up the Venezia Terminal Passeggeri, a commercial enterprise dedicated to managing cruise ship traffic in the port. VPA, Marco Polo Airport and the local chamber of commerce all have shares in the initiative.

Preservationists and lovers of the city’s mystique would like to see the ships dock elsewhere. “The ‘No Big Ship Committee’ is asking not to ban the cruises, but to stop them at the Lido, creating a new tourism port,” Secchi says.

The institutions responsible for finding alternative routes or strategies for cruise ships are many, while the decision-making pathways are tangled and muddled, adds Jane Da Mosto, author of The Science of Saving Venice. “What’s clear are the strong economic pressures of the cruise lobby,” she adds.

And “the last thing they (VPA) want is for ships to dock somewhere else, because of money,” says Anna Somers Cocks, CEO of The Art Newspaper in London and former head of the ‘Venice in Peril’ fund, which has raised 10 million pounds for the preservation of the city.

Fears of another Costa Concordia disaster in the lagoon surrounding Venice run high. But there’s more: dredging the canals to accommodate more and larger ships runs the risk of stirring up detritus from a 1960s petrochemical operation. “Ships would come into the petrochemical trench, then turn into a deeper trench into the port — they want to dig it 10 meters deep from six, and 100 meters wide from 50,” Cocks says.

2015-08-27-1440706463-9268441-3DS_7810copy.jpg

Marco Secchi, Photographer, Venice

Heavy metal waste from the petrochemical industry lies at the bottom of the lagoon — it’s highly toxic, but resting quietly for the moment. “There are particles of extremely poisonous chemicals” she says. “As soon as you start digging around, you release them into the lagoon.”

The photography exhibition might have served as a catalyst for change — but the mayor’s delay unveils a different scenario. “It all has to do with what’s going to happen to the port,” she says. “People are lobbying for the protection of the city, and then there are those who say ‘You’re living in cuckoo-land — let’s make as much money as we can.'”

Which may result in some unintended consequences for a city that’s increasingly dependent economically on tourists, rather than its dwindling tax base of shops and residents.

As Locktov tweeted the mayor, it’s “not a good idea to insult the people who fill your coffers with euro.”

Not to mention unleashing deadly toxins into your lagoon.

Haunting Photos Show The Real New Orleans, Through Hope And Despair

David Spielman’s New Orleans is solemn and still, a place where cat’s claw vines creep up walls and consume entire houses. A staircase leads to an empty lot where a building once stood; a piano sits outside on a sunny day, unplayed and sharing space with a pile of tires. The photographer captures scenes from around the city, and the lingering effects of Hurricane Katrina’s devastation are everywhere.

“I wanted to create a sense of what it was like and how it impacted everybody,” said Spielman, whose photographs are collected in the book The Katrina Decade: Images of an Altered Citywhich was released this summer. Some of the images are currently on display in an accompanying exhibition at the Historic New Orleans Collection.

Spielman set out to capture the overlooked areas of the city.

“One of the things that I think is very, very important, is, sadly, the media has kind of construed Katrina’s primary damage to the Lower 9th Ward,” he told The Huffington Post. “They fail to fully capture the fact that over 80 percent of the city of New Orleans was flooded.”

“Hopefully,” he added, “people will start to realize that Katrina was an equal and ecumenical destruction.”

The 10-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina won’t mark the end of Spielman’s efforts to depict a long and wide-ranging view of a changing New Orleans. He has been photographing his city for four decades and says he plans to continue “until the day before I die.”

“The event was the hurricane. The story was the aftermath,” Spielman said.

A few of Spielman’s photographs depict people, but his focus is mostly on the city’s architecture and “the battle between nature and the destruction.”

“Although there are no people in the pictures, you know when you look at those houses covered in vines, that was somebody’s home,” he said. “So when you think about these houses that have been around for well over 100 years, you think of the generations of people.”

The collection of black and white images (shot on film, with a Leica camera) is ambiguous, evading easy description. That’s partially intentional for Spielman, who contrasts his quiet scenes with some of the more dramatic portrayals of New Orleans after the storm hit.

In his book, Spielman quotes the photographer Robert Frank, one of his major influences. He recited the quote from memory in our phone interview: “Black and white are the colors of photography. To me they symbolize the alternatives of hope and despair to which mankind is forever subjected.”

Through the rich and numerous shades of gray in his photographs, Spielman captures a blend of that hope and despair: The storm has passed, but left an indelible mark on New Orleans.

25 Candid Photos That Show Breastfeeding Is Beautiful, Wherever You Nurse

After photos from her Public Breastfeeding Awareness Project (PABP) spread widely across the Internet last August, photographer and mom of four Leilani Rogers is continuing to normalize the sight of nursing and support lactating moms.

In honor of National Breastfeeding Awareness Month this year, Rogers recruited over 70 photographers in the U.S., Australia, Italy, U.K., Venezuela and Canada to take pictures of moms nursing their children in public places like libraries, parks, stadiums and grocery stores. She’s also invited other parents and photographers to share their own breastfeeding images on the project’s Facebook page or on their own social media accounts with the hashtag #PBAP2015.

Rogers was inspired by her own experiences with breastfeeding to launch the Public Breastfeeding Awareness Project in 2014, she told The Huffington Post. Though she overcame challenges with mastitis, bad latches, low supply, plugged ducts, thrush, staph infections and more, she says the one issue she was never able to face was her fear of breastfeeding in public.

“I avoided it at all costs,” the mom said, explaining that she feared stares and judgment from strangers so much that she retreated to her house and made life more difficult by planning everything around each baby’s feeding schedule. “I wish I could go back and tell my former self not to care so much about what other people thought. Not to be ashamed of my body. Not to be self-conscious about openly doing what nature intended.”

Rogers hopes the Public Breastfeeding Awareness Project will empower moms by offering the support and community she wished she had. She also believes it may help break down the struggles breastfeeding moms face, not only in nursing successfully but also in overcoming societal barriers and expectations. ”Society’s support is paramount to a breastfeeding mother’s success,” she said. “Mothers are hiding in their cars, restrooms, sometimes not leaving their homes at all — because they do not want to face the kind of public scrutiny that causes someone to file a complaint with managers and store owners about a woman breastfeeding in a public place.”

By encouraging other moms to participate in PBAP photo sessions or follow the project’s Facebook page, she hopes they will gain the confidence to nurse in public. Rogers would also like her images to reach non-parents. ”My hope is that seeing these images will help desensitize them, or even reprogram their thinking that breasts are sexual and that breastfeeding is an extension of that. It’s not,” she said.

“Perhaps you haven’t witnessed a mother breastfeeding in public before,” she continued. “You’re not sure what you would do if you happened to turn the corner in the grocery store and run right into a mother juggling her life with a breastfeeding child in tow. These images also serve the purpose of positive, gentle exposure.”

Keep scrolling for a sample of the beautiful images of mothers nursing their babies in public from photographers across the globe.

These Photos Show The Beautifully Unique Ways These People Express Their Gender

The world is certainly changing for queer people.

From more and more people being able to live as their authentic selves to ensuring rights for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community via legislation, the last few years have seen especially overwhelming progress in terms of the growing cultural awareness surrounding this community.

A new photography book from Bernd Ott and Emily Besa aims to capture this reality through photos and stories of over 36 individuals who identify at different points along the spectrum of gender identity. Called All The People, the book features individuals from the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Germany and the United States who all uniquely transcend traditional notions of gender.

“We hope that some will see that your identity is not defined by socially introduced categorizations,” Ott told The Huffington Post. “Once we can see categories as being arbitrary and meaningless, some may realize that we all share very similar fears and emotions and the same worries and feelings determine our existence. We actually share the same human experience despite what we look like, who we love, or how we love.”

Check out photos from All The People below, as well as an interview with Ott and Besa. All The People is also engaged in a Kickstarter campaign in order to fund its publication — head here for more information.

Painfully Close Photos Of Human Faces Look Strangely Inhuman

Glance at a crowd of people from a great enough distance and they’ll cease to even look human, their particular parts fading out of focus until the pack resembles a uniform army of flesh-colored toy soldiers.

Zoom in and you’ll see their hands and hair and the choice of shoes. Keep going and you’ll make out the shapes of their noses, the textures of their faces, the color of their eyes. Keep zooming and the temporary relief of human familiarity is ripped off like a scab, as every tooth, every ear, every pimple, every scar, becomes a singular visual event.

Brooklyn-based photographer Bruce Gilden gets close. So close, in fact, that by gazing upon one of his color portraits you can almost feel hot breath emanating from them, smelling just a bit sour. “You know, I’m photographing people that are not only left behind in most cases, but they’re actually invisible because people don’t want to see them,” Gilden explained in an interview with GUP Magazine.

“I get close because I try to get close to the soul of the people in my pictures,” he added. On the way to the soul, Gilden surely gets a good glimpse of the face, every blemish, wrinkle and pore, turning one of photography’s most tried and true tropes — portraiture — into something unsettling, a little gut-wrenching.

Gilden, who is now 68 years old, has been taking photographs since 1968, when he was a student in college. He’s known for his impulsive style, catching intriguing pedestrians off guard, leaping before them with his camera in one hand and his flash in the other. “Some are taken unawares, some are surprised,” he told PBS. “Some didn’t know what hit them. And I think most people like to be photographed. But since I work in a spontaneous way, I have to be a little bit sneaky because I don’t want them to know that I’m going to take a picture of them.”

Gilden’s series, “Face,” captures the full frontal expressions of people he describes as “underdogs,” those outside the zones of gentrification, not privileged enough to possess the plasticky exterior of the masses. Finding subjects in places from Las Vegas to Des Moines to Milwaukee to West Bromwich, England, Gilden snaps their every quirk and blemish with the authority of a mugshot and the precision of a medical image. Whiteheads bulge with the promise of puss, foundation cakes up like dust gathering on a corpse. What Lucian Freud did to the body Gilden does to the head.

Gilden is not, however, spotlighting his subjects as particularly grotesque aberrations of the human being. He himself identifies with the outsider status of his subjects, and he respects them for it. “I identify with these people in my pictures, because I’m actually photographing myself. The people in my pictures interest me. I like them, and they motivate me.”

Gilden’s portraits may be unforgiving, brutal, ugly, even grotesque. Yet this visceral ugliness isn’t the signal of a monster, but of a human being. One not sanitized and scrubbed clean, buttoned up and plugged in. For Gilden, the ugly is the good stuff, and maybe even lets the soul peer out.

92 Gorgeous Photos That Show What It Really Means To Be Trans

Last summer, HuffPost Gay Voices asked transgender people to share photos of themselves on Twitter using the hashtag #WhatTransLooksLike in an effort to show just how diverse — and beautiful! — the trans community is.

We were absolutely gobsmacked by the response we received. In fact, people were so excited about #WhatTransLooksLike that we received countless requests for us to do another call out.

So, that’s exactly what we did. And it couldn’t have come at a better time. In the 12 months since our first #WhatTransLooksLike story, the “transgender tipping point” has tipped even further.

From Caitlyn Jenner’s gorgeous Vanity Fair cover and emotional ESPY Awards speech to Jazz Jenning’s reality TV show debut to news that transgender soldiers may soon be able to openly serve in the military, we’ve continued to see stunning wins for the trans community in the last year.

Of course, there’s much work left to do. Trans people still face inordinately high levels of prejudice and are regularly targeted for violence. And while representations in the media of what it means to be trans are becoming more varied and nuanced, for the most part, the images, stories and experiences of trans people still do not receive the attention they deserve.

So, for all of those reasons — and because we simply wanted to showcase another collection of beautiful photos — we bring you #WhatTransLooksLike2.

These Photos Will Make You Want To Put Your Phone Down Forever

It looks like smartphones really have killed the concept of “idle time.”

Last year, photographer Babycakes Romero captured an array of images showing people glued to their mobile devices when they could otherwise be having a conversation, enjoying dinner or simply staring into space. The series, titled “The Death of Conversation,” was published on Bored Panda and ultimately led to a TEDx Talk this Tuesday.

In the time that’s passed since he first published the photo series, Romero says the smartphone problem — as he sees it — has only gotten worse.

“As smartphones encompass more and more of people’s lives everyone is turning to them more and more as every aspect of their existence has been digitized and made accessible to them 24/7,” Romero told The Huffington Post via email.

You’ve probably noticed something like this in your own life: You’re at dinner with someone, there’s a lull in the conversation, and suddenly both of you are checking your smartphones. Romero says the devices become an excuse to hide a “lost connection” between people.

“It is sad that this technology which was supposed to connect people is making them disconnect from each other in person,” Romero told HuffPost.

Agree or not, his photos offer pretty striking evidence that people everywhere are hooked on their smartphones. Take a look for yourself:

20 Photos That Highlight The Beautiful Diversity Of Plus-Size Bodies

Corissa Enneking is here to remind everyone that there is a lot more diversity in the plus-size community than the few plus-size women we see in magazines and on the runway.

In June, the fat-positive writer and fashion blogger created a body-positive campaign that represented plus-size bodies of all shapes and sizes.

Although mainstream media has only recently incorporated plus-size women and plus-size fashion, the type of plus-size bodies that are featured are mostly “white, under 30, on the smaller side of fat, able-bodied and evenly proportioned,” Enneking wrote on her blog, Fat Girl Flow.

Enneking created a callout asking plus-size women to submit images of themselves to illustrate the different body types that the term “plus size” actually encompasses. The results are a diverse range of beautiful plus-size bodies.

Enneking explained why she created the project to The Huffington Post. “It’s easy to look at a size 14 plus-size model and celebrate them for their curviness. And while I applaud anyone who cares about body positivity, the people who are really making waves and moving this community forward are the ones we often don’t celebrate.”

“It’s the people who continue to feel under represented that keep us thinking of how to be inclusive, and what fat positivity means,” Enneking told HuffPost. “It’s those people who continue to challenge our thoughts about being ‘acceptable’ in society who are really pushing the status quo… I want to help those people’s voices be heard, because they are saying some amazing things!”

On her blog, Enneking wrote that she wants to remind all fat women that their bodies are “worthy of representation.” “Being fat is not exclusive to one gender, sexual orientation, or race, and it doesn’t discriminate based on your physical or mental capacities,” she wrote. “Being fat is something people across cultures can experience, and even people who are not fat can identify with body image issues.”

Preach, lady.

Scroll below to see 20 stunning women who rock beautiful plus-size bodies.

Head over to Enneking’s website Fat Girl Flow to read more about the diversity of plus-size bodies.

Taylor Swift And Calvin Harris’ July 4th Weekend Photos Make Sparks Fly
