Kourtney Kardashian Jokes About Pregnant Kylie Jenner’s Absence in New Family Christmas Picture

Even the family is in on it now!

Kourtney Kardashian gave fans a look at the reality TV family dressed up for mom Kris Jenner‘s annual Christmas Eve party last week on Instagram, Saturday. Alongside the image, the oldest Kardashian seemingly poked fun at the fact that sister Kylie Jenner has been missing from family photos more frequently since news broke in September that she’s expecting her first child with boyfriend Travis Scott.

“When you can’t find the rest of the family for the photo …” Kourtney, 38, captioned the shot in which she posed with Kim Kardashian West, Kendall Jenner, Kris and pregnant Khloé Kardashian, who showed off her baby bump. Kim’s 4-year-old daughter North West also joined the photo, as well as Kourtney’s daughter Penelope Disick, 5.

Though Kylie’s absence was the most obvious, other members of the KarJenner crew missed out on the photo, including Rob Kardashian, and Kim and Kourtney’s other children.

Kylie, 20, only appeared in two photos that were publicly shared from the Christmas bash, posing with her fellow expectant sister Khloé. Earlier this week, Khloé shared photo booth shots of her and Kylie, who covered up in a leather jacket.

Of the party, a source told PEOPLE, “Kylie looked great but didn’t really draw any attention to her baby bump. She still acts like she wants to keep her pregnancy private.”

The cosmetics mogul also appeared on Khloé’s Snapchat on Christmas day where she told her sister’s followers that she had been at the party — just away from the cameras.

WATCH: Vacation Like a Kardashian: Here’s How Much It Will Cost You

Kylie has yet to confirm her pregnancy publicly. The Kylie Cosmetics owner has kept out of the public eye by sticking close to her house in Calabasas. As a source told PEOPLE in October, “Kylie wants to keep a low profile.”

“She feels good, but her body is changing,” the source continued. “She doesn’t want to be photographed. At the moment, she wants more privacy. She has family and friends come to her house instead so she has company. She’s very excited about the baby, though. She talks about the baby nonstop.”

Another insider told PEOPLE last month that Kylie is “only trusting her closest friends and her sisters right now.”

Justin Trudeau Photobombs A Prom Picture, Which Makes Him King

Prom nights often include awkward moments with your date and partying.

But a chance meeting with a head of state while he’s exercising?

Nope, that’s a new one.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau seemed to jog mostly unnoticed by a group of prom revelers in Vancouver, British Columbia, Friday night.

His photographer, Adam Scotti, captured the moment and wrote in a Sunday Instagram post that he’s chronicling the PM’s runs in a small side project and loves watching the reactions of people “as they realise who just ran past.”

It seems the group, at the Stanley Park Seawall, did finally recognize the photobomb-inclined Trudeau. He stopped for a photo with them.

Sure beats a corsage as a souvenir.

What Does It Really Mean To Win Best Picture?

Sunday’s Oscars loom in the shadow of Donald Trump’s fledgling presidency. As with every awards show this year, we can expect a night of equal-rights diatribes mounted in resistance to the regressive legislation and callow disregard for tradition that has defined the Trump administration’s debut.

But before arriving at the annual ritual, we will have already seen one of the most politically driven Best Picture debates unfurl in the media. This time, it’s personal.

Perhaps more than ever, the Best Picture contest seems to double as a referendum on our culture’s conscience. It’s bigger than the Oscars, just as Beyoncé losing Album of the Year to Adele was bigger than the Grammys. If movies are statements about the world around us, then one purpose of the Academy Awards is to adjudicate the year’s best cinematic manifestos. That’s complicated when titles from Obama’s America are being feted in Trump’s America.

It’s especially complicated when considering the Oscars’ thorny political backdrop. Throughout its 89-year history, the event has, after all, become a shrine to Hollywood’s liberal values ― even when the movies themselves aren’t explicitly political.

In 2014, “12 Years a Slave” director Steve McQueen ended his Best Picture acceptance speech by dedicating the award “to all the people who have endured slavery and the 21 million people who still suffer slavery today.” He then turned to the cast and crew surrounding him onstage and leapt into the air enthusiastically.

In 2016, “Spotlight” producer Michael Sugar addressed his Best Picture acceptance speech to Pope Francis, saying he hopes the recognition will inspire “a choir that will resonate all the way to the Vatican.” He then turned and gave Michael Keaton a bear hug.

In both cases, it would have been surprising not to hear rallying cries related to the human-rights transgressions depicted in these films.

Sandwiched between the “12 Years a Slave” and “Spotlight” victories was “Birdman.” The closest that movie came to tackling social ills was something along the lines of “middle age = hard.” Yet director Alejandro González Iñárritu, a Mexico native, politicized his acceptance speech anyway, ending with a sweet pro-immigration sentiment.

This all took place during Barack Obama’s tenure. In terms of Hollywood’s nerve center, it was a time of relative political ease.

But amid radical unrest, what does it mean to score popular culture’s most luminous prize?

If there’s one thing we know about the Oscars, it’s this: Even by subjective standards, the year’s best movie often doesn’t nab Best Picture. “The Greatest Show on Earth” beat “Singin’ in the Rain” because “Singin’ in the Rain” wasn’t even nominated. “How Green Was My Valley” topped “Citizen Kane,” frequently cited as the greatest film ever made. “Out of Africa” outpaced “The Color Purple.” “Dances with Wolves” stole the trophy from “Goodfellas.” Perhaps most infamously, voters preferred “Crash” over “Brokeback Mountain,” a groundbreaking masterpiece if we’ve ever seen one. Some would add “Birdman” to the list of failures, too ― it did compete against “Boyhood” and “Selma.”

Understanding that the minutiae of a Best Picture race has little to do with pure quality, any Oscar pundit will tell you this year’s front-runner is “La La Land,” a bubbly musical romance about an aspiring Los Angeles actress and a stubborn jazz purist. “Moonlight,” one of 2016’s most acclaimed releases, could unseat “La La Land” in an underdog triumph, partly because it’s a phenomenal movie and partly because of the important story it tells, about a black latchkey kid grappling with his sexuality in the Miami projects. But watch out for “Hidden Figures,” the charming box-office smash about three black women who were pivotal at NASA in the 1960s. “Hidden Figures” became a veritable threat to the “La La”-”Moonlight” two-hander when it won the Screen Actors Guild Awards’ top prize, a coveted Best Picture pacesetter.

(Apologies to the other six nominees: “Arrival,” “Fences,” “Hacksaw Ridge,” “Hell or High Water,” “Lion” and “Manchester by the Sea.” Thanks for playing.)

During awards season, that bastion of expensive politicking, offscreen narratives supersede art. This year’s narrative goes like this: “La La Land” is the escapist swoon needed to distract from Trump’s horror show, “Moonlight” is a socially vital tale not seen often enough, and “Hidden Figures” is a healthy blend of escapism and import.

Put another way, some journalists and Twitter objectors accuse “La La Land” of being a mansplain-y letdown with subpar dancers and a misguided homage to old-school musicals. They argue it’s simply not the movie Trump’s America needs, at least not when competing against stories about the very sorts of people our government would rather marginalize. The objectors’ objectors call them killjoys who fail to appreciate Damien Chazelle’s colorful flourishes and bittersweet enchantment. These arguments have occurred in countless think pieces since the moment “La La Land” opened. The New York Times’ arts writers, for instance, chimed in one by one on the musical’s merits, and lack thereof, last week.

Such political undercurrents offer a narrow, though not necessarily unfair, rubric for an awards show long granted an inflated premium within our pop-culture landscape. But if politics haunt the Oscars, shouldn’t the recipients reflect the moment’s political mood?

Maybe. History shows that honoring exemplary art has always been a mere slice of the Oscar pie.

When a coterie of Hollywood bigwigs created the Academy Awards, first held in 1929, they intended to harmonize the ballooning industry, which was facing labor disputes and struggling in the transition from silents to talkies. Within two years, subtle lobbying had started, with studios purchasing ads in trade magazines touting their candidates. In 1953, television broadcasts began, further romanticizing the event. As the years progressed, offscreen solicitations swelled. In 1979, the major studios reportedly spent a collective $ 1.8 million on Oscar campaigns. Two decades later, Miramax dropped an estimated $ 5 million on its successful “Shakespeare in Love” crusade alone. By that point, one has to wonder how much a movie’s quality even matters.

Mudslinging, strategic film-festival debuts, baby-kissing industry events and an endless parade of media appearances have become part and parcel of the months-long Oscar season, ultimately defining the derby in tandem with an onslaught of predictive precursor prizes and lingering mythology about who is “overdue” for a win. (See: Leonardo DiCaprio’s “Revenant” sweep.) The nearly 7,000-member Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is a persuadable, navel-gazing hive mind that, despite recent diversity initiatives, remains dominated by older white men ― the very group that decided “Crash” better reflects its values than “Brokeback Mountain.”

It can’t be over-emphasized: No matter how many A-listers wax poetic about the power of great art on Oscar night, the Oscars are never really about great art, not exclusively at least.

Which is why a Trump-era victory for “Moonlight” or “Hidden Figures” would be more significant than any other socially relevant winner from the past, including Obama-era champs “Spotlight” and “12 Years a Slave.” Following two consecutive years without any acting nominees of color, we’re blessed with one of the most diverse Oscar rosters in history. Why, some ask, would voters select “La La Land,” in which a white dude mouths off about the death of jazz, an art form historically associated with African-Americans?

Because it’s about Hollywood, of course. A Best Picture selection exemplifies the way the Academy wants to portray itself. In picking “La La Land,” the electorate advances the notion that movies are the dream ballets to which we all aspire. In opting for “Moonlight,” the Academy can confirm that art is inherently political, and that “Moonlight” is the film America needs to see now. “Hidden Figures,” again, combines the two value systems.

In every sense, there’s room for both styles of movies. Cinema does provide an escapism that has become woven into the fabric of our culture, and that’s perfectly fine. It also tackles hot-button issues in ways that shape how we see the world around us. There’s a reason Vietnam War epics “The Deer Hunter” and “Apocalypse Now” ― both Oscar winners ― were such important works in the 1970s, for example.

As mass media has mushroomed throughout the Oscars’ history, so has our treatment of the Academy as a cultural figurehead. It means something ― it means a lot, in fact ― that so few filmmakers of color have been nominated, or that the Oscars have spotty credentials when it comes to stories about queer subjects. If these awards are America’s gold standard, people of all backgrounds deserve an invitation.

But no matter the political jeremiads that flank Oscar night, the compulsion to gauge nominees based on the White House’s affairs has never been this frank. Just look at the past decade. Analyses of 2010’s campaigns indicated “The Hurt Locker” bested sci-fi behemoth “Avatar” because it staged a fierce dark-horse coup, not because it tackled the then-ongoing Iraq War. 2011’s titleholder, “The King’s Speech,” a typical Hollywood period piece, is one of the more divisive Best Picture upsets, largely because the moral ambiguity and topical timeliness of “The Social Network” made for a more progressive filmmaking style. Many chalk up the next two choices ― “The Artist” (over, say, “The Tree of Life”) and “Argo” (over “Lincoln”) ― as evidence of Hollywood’s love affair with itself.

These competing codes ― potent campaigns, forward-thinking filmmaking, masturbatory interests ― create a hodgepodge of Best Picture history that hasn’t prepared us to agree that Trump’s election should determine the winner. It is only within the Oscars’ limited scope that “La La Land” and “Moonlight” ― movies with little in common ― are pitted against each other. And that’s where it helps to realize the Oscars create more phony narratives about popular culture than perhaps any other institution. Suddenly, you’re either a “Moonlight” fan or a “La La Land” fan, creating a false choice between supporting inclusivity or encouraging the same old Hollywood frolics.

But if there’s one consistent message the Academy sends, it’s that a Best Picture winner reflects the product Hollywood is proud to have made. Knowing the economic boon such a victory can bring to a movie, the Academy seems to say, “Go see this so we can make more like it.”

For many playing along at home, that theory leads to an easy answer: We’ve seen movies like “La La Land” before, and we’ll see them again. Instead, we must fight for movies like “Hidden Figures” and, especially, “Moonlight,” which would be the second-lowest-grossing winner in history after “The Hurt Locker.”

It’s encouraging to know the Academy has proven increasingly capable of crowning films that aren’t the box-office bonanzas so cherished in a mercurial industry. Look no further than the little-seen “Birdman” conquering the lucrative “American Sniper,” or the fact that “Spotlight” was every bit as worthy as “Mad Max: Fury Road.” Despite rapacious business models, money isn’t the only form of profit. To coronate low performers is to risk seeming out of touch with common moviegoers, but the Oscars were never designed to be populist anyway.

That timeworn tug-of-war is on display again this year. The box-office success of “La La Land” and “Hidden Figures” make them far more popular, and arguably more relevant as a result. Yet despite initially positive reviews, “La La Land” does not mean to its fans what “Moonlight” means to its admirers, especially considering the latter’s smaller marketing budget. Few will leave “La La Land” thinking, “Finally, my story is being told.” And anyway, “La La” and “Hidden Figures” did not muster the volume of critical enthusiasm that “Moonlight” enjoyed.

What, then, makes one deserving of Best Picture over another? The weight of Hollywood’s future.

For a final example, let’s turn to the most glaring anecdote: In 1995, the edgy oddity “Pulp Fiction” lost to “Forrest Gump,” a box-office medalist drenched in conventional bathos. It’s an indisputable travesty, as “Pulp Fiction” is superior by every rubric except revenue. Critics knew it then, and just about everyone knows it now. Moreover, there would be ample “Forrest Gumps,” aka fables about heterosexual white men overcoming adversity in fantastical ways. Less reliable was the assumption that mainstream moviegoers in the mid-’90s would turn the next “Pulp Fiction” into a notable hit, thereby encouraging studios to invest in more like it ― and that’s a big part of why the Academy made a mistake. (Case in point: Quentin Tarantino’s next film, “Jackie Brown,” grossed one-third of what “Pulp Fiction” made domestically.) It’s not that there isn’t room for movies like “Forrest Gump.” But they do not boast the same flash-in-the-pan singularity of “Pulp Fiction,” just like “La La Land” does not carry the same dynamic originality of “Moonlight.”

At some point, the Academy has to decide for itself what the future of moviegoing must look like. What should people want to see? What should filmmakers aspire to? Dream ballets or mirrors held up to a knotty world? In other words, will voters pick more of the same or blaze a fresh frontier? With so much of the Obama administration’s progress in flux, our democracy awaits the answer.

Amazing Dance Photos From Musicals That Won Best Picture

Whether “La La Land” — and its history-making turn this awards season — has you celebrating or bemoaning its winks at classic American musicals, there’s no denying the Damien Chazelle–directed film has made its mark. It’s up for a record-tying 14 awards at the 89th annual Academy Awards on Feb. 26, including Best Picture.

It isn’t common for a production with singing and dancing to snag the Oscars’ top spot — the last to do so was “Chicago” in 2003. We wanted to look back at some of the other movie-musicals that took home the Best Picture statue over the years. Here are four of them:

“The Broadway Melody” (1929)

This was one of the first musicals to be seen on screen and the first sound film to ever take home the Best Picture statue at the 2nd Academy Awards. “The Broadway Melody” remains only one of three films in Oscars history to take home Best Picture and no other awards.

”The Great Ziegfeld” (1936)

This flashy film was a cinematic adaptation of Broadway’s “Ziegfeld Follies.” It took home Best Picture along with Best Actress and Best Dance Direction at the 9th Academy Awards, but critics at the time called it “a bit wearing” for its length and the story “fragmentary and, in some places, confused.”

”An American in Paris” (1951)

Imagine a movie today where 17 minutes of screen time was devoted to a single dance. “An American in Paris” pulled it off, with its famous ballet scene making it a memorable winner of the 24th Academy Awards. The film stands the test of time, boasting a 95 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

“West Side Story” (1961)

The skirts! The tough guys! The finger snaps! The film adaptation of the “Romeo and Juliet”-esque 1957 Broadway musical won 10 of its 11 nominated categories at the 34th Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Director, Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress. It’s the winningest musical in Oscars history — and to that, we say, Krup you!

A Dog’s Purpose Author: Additional Footage of Dog Stunt ‘Paints a Different Picture’

This article originally appeared on Entertainment Weekly.

A Dog’s Purpose author and co-screenwriter W. Bruce Cameron says a controversial video that appears to show a German shepherd being forced into turbulent water on the set of the movie is misleading and doesn’t tell the whole story.

In a statement released Friday, Cameron said he initially found the footage “shocking” but questioned the intentions of whoever was behind it. “If the people who shot and edited the video thought something was wrong,” he said, “why did they wait fifteen months to do anything about it, instead of immediately going to the authorities?”

Having reviewed additional footage from the day in question, Cameron said “it paints an entirely different picture.”

According to Cameron, “The dog was not terrified and not thrown in the water — I’ve seen footage of Hercules earlier that day joyfully jumping in the pool.” The dog only balked after being asked to perform the stunt from a different side of the pool than was rehearsed, and he “happily did the stunt when he was allowed to return to his original spot.”

Cameron conceded that “mistakes were made” during production of the film but added, “the reason American Humane certifies that no animals were harmed during the making of the film is that no animals were harmed during the making of the film.”

The filmmakers behind A Dog’s Purpose first came under criticism Wednesday, when TMZ published a video in which Hercules is seen clawing at a pool’s edge and trying to get away as a trainer attempts to force him into churning water. Off-camera, a voice can be heard chuckling at the dog’s resistance and saying, “You just got to throw him in.”

Director Lasse Hallstrom and voice actor Josh Gad, neither of whom were on set for the incident, both said on social media they found the video disturbing, and PETA has called for a boycott of the film.

Distributor Universal Pictures canceled the weekend premiere and press junket while producer Amblin Entertainment continues to investigate the incident. The companies said in a statement Thursday,”While we are all disheartened by the appearance of an animal in distress, everyone has assured us that Hercules the German shepherd was not harmed throughout the filmmaking. We continue to support this film, are incredibly proud of it and will release it for audiences nationwide” on Jan. 27.

Plan Out a Picture Perfect Wedding Day With These Handy Photography Tips (INFOGRAPHIC)

Though single life is great, at some point, many people decide that it’s time to get hitched with that special someone. However when that day finally arrives there are a plethora of disasters waiting to happen. And with so many cameras around, some of it is sure to get caught on film. From that one uncle nursing his fifth cocktail in the background, to the unforgivable “prom pose” between the bride and groom, there are some pretty unfortunate wedding photos out there. And when they’re truly horrendous, they end up published on the Internet with captions like “Seriously Awkward Wedding Photos” or “Avoid These Cringe-worthy Poses At Your Wedding.” Long story short, you don’t want to be that couple browsing the web one day only to discover that you’ve unintentionally become famous for the wrong reasons.

With your marriage being such a momentous occasion in your life, it’s important to document the big day properly. After all, when you’re reminiscing over tying the knot with your loved one, you don’t want to look back at your sole wedding album and grimace at every memory. Nobody wants to be fretting about having to Photoshop every guest’s red eye when they receive the final photos. Not to mention, asking yourself why the photographer failed to inform you that there was lipstick smeared on your teeth should be the least of your worries.

Fortunately such wedding picture mishaps are uncommon. In fact the majority of wedding photographers you’ll come across are professionals and have even the most difficult ceremonies under control. Yet with all the chaos of planning a wedding, from the centerpieces to the dinner entrees, it’s all too easy to let something like photos fall through the cracks before you say, “I do.” And of all the to-dos on your checklist, ensuring there will be a way to record this special event should be a top priority.

Thankfully, this helpful infographic courtesy of Shutterfly provides everything you need to know to guarantee a picture perfect wedding. It has you covered whether you’re having trouble pinpointing the ideal time of day you should set aside for wedding party photos or going over exactly what type of images you are looking for with your photographer. This handy chart will guide you in the right direction. It’ll answer all your burning photography questions and make things considerably easier for both you and your spouse-to-be.

A Wedding Photog Slipped While Taking A Picture And The Result Is Priceless

Photographer Chase Richardson slipped and fell while he was in the middle of taking bridal party pictures at a wedding last June. Poor guy!

Fortunately, though, his wedding fail was not in vain because it resulted in this excellent photo:

2015-07-01-1435793979-93173-chaserichardsonslipphoto.jpg
Credit: Chase Richardson/Followell Photography

Richardson snapped the photo at the nuptials of Kristina and Will Moore in June 2014 at the McClain Lodge in Brandon, Mississippi. He explained to The Huffington Post that it had rained all morning leading up to the wedding, which gave way to some slippery pavement.

“When it came time to take the wedding party photos, the rain had subsided, but everything was wet,” he said. “So I decided to shoot the wedding party under a covered patio that was basically a concrete slab. I was framing up the photo of the entire wedding party, and I took a step backwards and slipped in a puddle. It was all kind of a blur, but I hit the ground, broke the lens I was using and cut my finger open. Embarrassing! I shot the rest of the wedding with a very noisy, broken lens and a bleeding finger.”

The groom told HuffPost that Richardson was a total trouper and didn’t miss a beat.

“[My] first thought was just hoping he was okay, it was a pretty nasty fall,” Will said. “We saw there was blood on his hand and hoped he wasn’t hurt too bad. He got up and went right back to work though.”

Richardson didn’t even know he had captured the moment until after the wedding when he was looking through what he had shot.

Fast-forward to a year later, when Richardson tweeted the photo at Jimmy Fallon along with the hashtag #weddingfail.

The “Tonight Show” host ended up featuring the photo on his show. Afterwards, the picture also made the rounds on Reddit where it received more than 5,800 upvotes at the time of publication.

“I think after all of this, I would have to say that this little accident has been worth it,” Richardson said.

‘Saturday Night Live’ Accused Of Plagiarizing ‘Picture Perfect’ Sketch

Once again “Saturday Night Live” has landed in an awkward spot. The show was accused of plagiarizing a popular sketch, “Picture Perfect,” that appeared in the Reese Witherspoon-hosted episode last weekend. The sketch featured a “Win, Lose Or Draw” parody that asked participants to draw the Prophet Mohammed and somewhat referred to Charlie Hebdo. It was widely praised when it aired.

But some viewers noted that it seemed similar to one that appeared on Canadian show “This Hour Has 22 Minutes” in January, featuring nearly identical plot points and jokes. One of the show’s writers Bobby Kerr tweeted about the resemblance:

Here’s the “SNL” version:

And the original “This Hour Has 22 Minutes” sketch:

NBC had no comment on the allegations of plagiarism.

Dying in text and picture – online obituaries

Dying in text and picture – online obituaries

Obituaries in newspapers and magazines are solemn, quiet affairs. But the new media offer a different kind of way of honoring a deceased loved one. You can publish articles, countless picture, interactive guest-books and other gimmicks. But a very popular means of mourning are slideshow obituaries.A few notes concerning terminology are necessary at this point. The term obituary is traditionally used for text-only formats (sometimes including a single picture) that appear in newspapers. The slideshow obituaries of our corpus are structurally as well as content-wise very different from these. Nonetheless, we use have the term as a starting point for our paper and will use it throughout our text. One can argue that a comparison between slideshow obituaries and traditional ones is impossible because of the high discrepancies in structure and content. But our reason for omitting such a comparison is based on the fact that an analysis of this kind would have to rely primarily on linguistic aspects. The numerous pictures in slideshow obituaries would be dealt with very briefly and which does not do justice to the prominent role they play in this particular kind of text. But the ‘more’ of a slideshow obituary is not only the pictures. Other visuals play an important role, the layout, the hosting website. You have the freedom to use different fonts and font sizes. You can create everything from scratch or fall back on websites that provide design templates. You can add music or a voice message. The content is usually much less limited than that of a traditional obituary. This myriad of design possibilities leads to our hypothesis: we propose that, in slideshow obituaries, the different modalities – especially word and image – cannot be separated from one another. They fulfill inherently different functions and each contributes vital information to the overall product. Following this introduction, there will be a section on online obituaries. It will introduce the concept and g

A Lot Of People Haven’t Seen The Year’s Best Picture Nominees

Amid controversy with this year’s list of Oscar nominees, there’s this sobering statistic: The eight movies nominated for Best Picture are the lowest-grossing group since the Academy Awards expanded from five nominees in 2009. As Box Office Mojo notes, the eight movies have earned a combined $ 203.1 million, more than $ 300 million less than the previous low in 2011.

Part of that has to do with the number of nominees: No fewer than nine movies have been in the Best Picture race since the 2009 ceremony. (This year, there were eight.) Part of that has to do with the snubs: “Gone Girl” ($ 167 million in North America), “Unbroken” ($ 103 million in North America), “Into the Woods” ($ 107 million in North America) and “Interstellar” ($ 185 million in North America) all failed to secure nominations.

As it stands now, Wes Anderson’s “The Grand Budapest Hotel” is the most financially successful Best Picture nominee with $ 59 million in North American ticket sales. “The Imitation Game” ($ 42 million) follows close behind. Films like “Selma,” “The Imitation Game” and “American Sniper” should also make up big ground between now and Feb. 22, when the Oscars are handed out. (“American Sniper” and “The Imitation Game” could both crack $ 100 million prior to the ceremony, assuming each film continues to perform through nationwide expansion.) But for an Academy that originally expanded its roster of Best Picture nominees to be more inclusive, this year feels anything but: It’s an indie-heavy lineup that all but ignored major studio successes, and could prove deadly to the Oscars’ television ratings next month.

For more, head to Box Office Mojo.

One Of These 21 Movies Will Probably Win Best Picture At The 2015 Oscars

best picture

Welcome to For Your Consideration, HuffPost Entertainment’s breakdown of all things Oscar. Between now and Feb. 22, 2015, entertainment managing editor Christopher Rosen and entertainment editor Matthew Jacobs will pore over awards season and discuss which films will make the most noise at the 87th annual Academy Awards.

The finish line is here. We are two weeks away from the Oscar nominations, which means studios need to put any last-minute campaigning into overdrive. With voting having already opened (see our dream ballots here), it stands to reason that the state of the race has more or less been determined. Still, we hope to see plenty of surprises when the nominations arive on Jan. 15, especially in the Best Picture field, where the number of nominees remains a question mark. (Since a 2011 rule change, the Academy Awards can nominate anywhere between five and 10 films for Best Picture.) There’s arguably still no clear front-runner, but five movies (“Selma,” “Boyhood,” “The Imitation Game,” “Birdman” and “The Theory of Everything”) seem like guarantees, with ample contenders trying to edge their way into the remaining slots. Here are the 21 movies competing in the marathon:

Plus-Size Woman Had Editors Photoshop Her Picture To Make Her ‘Beautiful’ — She Did Not Expect This

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Marie Southard Ospina, an associate fashion and beauty editor with Bustle, decided to put beauty in the hand of the beholder, asking photo editors from around the world to Photoshop her profile picture and make her “beautiful.” Ospina was inspired by journalists Esther Honig and Priscilla Yuki Wilson, both of whom conducted similar experiments earlier this year. While Honig focused on how culture and beauty pertain to women, Wilson examined how culture and beauty pertain to race; but Ospina, a 23-year-old, plus-size woman, focused on the cultural relationship between weight and beauty.

In her Bustle piece, Ospina writes:

Having grown up predominantly in the first world, I’m aware that in countries like the U.S. or the U.K. being fat is (although quite common) perceived as an inherently negative thing. Stereotypes include, but are not limited to: laziness, selfishness, stupidity, naiveté and even a lower socioeconomic class. But I’m also aware that the notion of “thin is the only beautiful” doesn’t permeate the entirety of the world.

Editors from 17 countries, of varying skill levels, were paid between $ 5 and $ 30 to “make me look beautiful, whilst keeping in mind the looks they see in the fashion/beauty mags of their countries.”

(Story continues below.)
photo

The results from her experiment proved surprising. Though Ospina thought most editors would digitally alter her bone structure and weight to make her look thinner, only three out of the 21 did just that.

“I was extremely positive about the results in the sense that I felt they showed just how different we all, as individuals, define and perceive beauty,” she wrote in an email to The Huffington Post on Thursday. “The reality is that the ‘beautiful’ we’re often taught to aspire to is quite linear, and rooted in being thin. But that’s just one type of beauty. I don’t think the experiment served to show that all of a sudden we, as a species, fat shame any less. Or that all of a sudden we are perfectly accepting of diversity in size. But it did show that defining this six-letter word is nearly impossible. And that’s kind of as it should be. We should all be entitled to our perceptions and our attractions. I don’t ever expect everyone in the world to look a plus-size body and think, ‘My god, he/she is stunning.’ But I hope for a day when the fact that a lot of people do find that larger body attractive isn’t met with such surprise, shock and sometimes anger.”

She said the response she has received from her experiment has been overwhelmingly positive, and she believes that is because people are “tired of being told there is only one kind of beauty.”

“I want women to know that they don’t have to be thin to be beautiful or worthwhile or important or good,” she wrote to HuffPost.

“We need to remember that beauty exists in all forms, styles, shapes, sizes, colors,” she added. “We need to remember that the fact that beauty is actually undefinable is, in of itself, a beautiful thing.”

Head over to Bustle to read more about Ospina’s Photoshop experiment.

Eat & Beat Diabetes with Picture Perfect Weight Loss

Eat & Beat Diabetes with Picture Perfect Weight Loss

Ask any doctor or nutritionist who treats patients with diabetes: the first focus for controlling the disease is a healthy eating plan. But typical plans have been all about what you can’t eat and what to do if you fall prey to a craving. Now a diabetic’s day might start with a smoked salmon-and-dill omelet, continue to a lunch of three-bean chili, and finish with a dinner of grilled shrimp with a dessert of chocolate terrine. It’s a kind of eating that virtually guarantees not just control of the disease and a satisfied appetite, but an emphasis on nutrients that target diabetes, beating back its potential side effects and maintaining a healthy weight. Dr. Howard Shapiro uses the same visual method of food comparisons that made his bestselling weight-loss books so popular and easy to use. Now he has teamed with top chef Franklin Becker, a diabetic, to reveal the secrets to a diet that can actually help you prevent and beat diabetes–without depriving yourself of delicious food.

Teddy Bear Town Children’s Bundle (Three Complete Picture Books)

Teddy Bear Town Children’s Bundle (Three Complete Picture Books)

Immerse your child in the sweet and gentle world of teddy bears with three complete picture books from the writing and illustrating team of Stacy Juba and Larry Drumtra. Each of these bedtime stories is fully illustrated with simple and cheerful illustrations of teddy bear families. Illustrations are large and are especially vivid on color e-readers.The following titles are featured in the bundle:The Flag Keeper – Elizabeth may be a little bear, but she treats the American flag with big respect. After Dad leaves for a trip, Elizabeth pledges to raise the flag all by herself and follow all of the flag etiquette rules that her father has taught her. However, her dad never told her what to do if the flag gets dirty or the police show up. Teaches children about U.S. flag etiquette through a fiction story, flag facts, activity idea, and discussion questions. For ages 4-9.Victoria Rose and the Big Bad Noise – Victoria loves her home and family, but boy does she hate the noises that invade her daily life. Her imagination transforms the blender into a growling bear, the vacuum cleaner into a lion and the lawnmower into a spaceship filled with monsters. With the help of a CD player, she decides that maybe a nasty noise like the blender is just music that doesn’t know how to sing. This sweet bedtime story can help young children learn that household noises aren’t so scary after all. For ages 3 and up.Sticker Shoes – When Jenny gets a sticker stuck to her shoe, she has a new invention – Sticker Shoes! She covers her sneakers with shiny sparkling stickers and runs outside to try out her beautiful shoes. Unfortunately, Sticker Shoes aren’t meant for rough and tumble play in the dirt and her invention doesn’t last. Jenny makes her way through her closet, trying on old boots, dress-up shoes and slippers in her hunt for the perfect Sticker Shoe. Teaches young children about problem-solving and taking the first early “steps” toward independence. For ages 3 and up.
