Street Signs: Moscow’s Coolest Skaters Have a New Place to Shop

MOSCOW — Signaling the vibrancy of the local skateboard scene — and a rebounding Russian retail market — upstart brand Paccbet has opened its first freestanding store here.
The 1,600-square-foot unit is called Oktyabr: the name echos the Oktyabrskaya subway station where Moscow skaters congregate to improve their skills – and check out each others’ gear – under a monumental statue of Lenin.

Paccbet founder Tolia Titaev, 24, hopes Oktyabr – which he bills as the first multi-brand skateboarding store in Moscow – will become another key meeting point for the local scene. In addition to Paccbet, the Russian word for sunrise, the unit carries such brands as F—ing Awesome, Dime, Awake, Stussy and Carharrt. Oktyabr also carries Russian Absurd, which Titaev cooked up with local skating hero Gosha Konushev, who will lead a group of boarders sponsored by Oktyabr.
“I always wanted to do something for Russian skateboarding. I wanted to tell the world that the Russian scene is strong and our youth is buzzing and is willing to do things,” said Titaev, who established Paccbet in 2016 under the tutelage of his friend Gosha Rubchinskiy, the new ringleader of the Russian fashion scene and

Nikki Bella Jokes That Twin Sister Brie Should Have Broken Up with John Cena in Her Place

Nikki Bella has a sense of humor about her relationship drama with John Cena.

In an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon with her twin sister Brie Bella, the wrestler, 34, quipped about the romance.

When Fallon asked about the advantages of having an identical twin, Nikki replied, “When we were young, we’d break up with boyfriends for each other.”

Brie chimed in, “We never had to go through the emotions of a breakup because I was like, ‘You wanna dump the guy? Cool.’ I’d be like, ‘Hello? Yeah, not into you. Sorry.’ And then I would just go on with my day, no hard feelings, and she’d be like, ‘Did you do it?’ And I’d be like, ‘Yeah, you’re good.’”

RELATED: Nikki Bella Realizes She Can’t Marry John Cena on Total Bellas Finale: See the Emotional Moment

Then Nikki got in a burn: “So where were you a few months ago? Just kidding.”

“Sorry,” she said as the audience gasped.

“That would’ve been a hard phone call,” Brie replied.

Nikki was cheekily alluding to her rocky road with Cena, 41. The longtime loves got engaged in April 2017 after dating for five years. A year later, Nikki broke off the engagement three weeks before their May 5 wedding date.

“He was making it abundantly clear that he was going into this gritting his teeth the whole way,” a source told PEOPLE at the time. “Nikki is an amazing, talented, strong, one-of-a-kind woman. Anyone would be lucky to have her in their life — yet John acted more and more like he was doing her a favor by somehow conceding to go ahead and marry her.”

On The Tonight Show, Nikki opened up about how difficult it is to watch the moments play out on TV.

“This season’s been really painful for me,” she said. “To just relive, it’s been super tough.”

When Fallon mentioned that the Total Bellas season finale is “emotional,” Nikki explained, “Brie and I, we’re just beyond open books. But we feel like if you want to have a reality show, you can’t have the fake stuff. You really have to let people into your life, and that’s how you connect with people.”

The split also stemmed from their differing thoughts on having children.

“I do want to be a mom,” Nikki said on Total Divas in 2013. “I feel like I’d be missing out.”

“I’m going to choose my words carefully,” Cena answered. “I can’t give you that.”

On a recent episode of Total Bellas, Nikki got nervous about marrying Cena because of this difference of opinion. “I just know deep down I want a baby,” she said. “I want to be a mom, and I feel like I can’t live the rest of my life not having one.”

Then, Cena agreed to have his vasectomy reversed.

On Total Bellas, the Blockers star told Nikki about his change of heart. “I physically can’t have kids,” he said. “So I’m also telling you that I’m willing to have surgery and then still go through with being a dad.”

But in the latest episode of Total Bellas, Nikki decided to cancel the wedding again. “It’s tough because he’s, like, fighting really hard for me,” she said, going on to add that “there’s something that is making me not feel like I can walk down the aisle right now.”

The season finale of Total Bellas airs Sunday at 9 p.m. ET on E!

Karlbots Groove On Place Vendôme for Launch of Makeup Collaboration

PARIS — Karl Lagerfeld and Australian beauty company ModelCo celebrated their makeup collaboration by unleashing a flashmob of 100 Karlbots on Paris landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe, culminating with a dance performance on Place Vendôme on Tuesday night.
The so-called beauty butlers, decked out in black suits and metallic helmets in Lagerfeld’s likeness, performed to Blondie’s “Rapture” before filing into the Hôtel d’Evreux, where Karl Lagerfeld chief executive officer Pier Paolo Righi and ModelCo ceo Shelley Sullivan welcomed guests in a space bathed in flattering pink light.

Products including ModelCo’s signature Lip Lights range, featuring a built-in LED light and mirror, were on display. The line launched globally on May 14 online and in selected stores including Nordstrom and Galeries Lafayette, with products featuring Lagerfeld’s silhouette reported to be among the early best-sellers.
“It is truly for the beauty junkie,” Sullivan said of the one-off collection. “We call them illuminated beauty because they illuminate in some way: they either light up, or they make you shine, but I think mainly the biggest excitement is taking something to the world that has been ever so popular and collectible.”
Righi said the line reflected Lagerfeld’s

Andrisen Morton Puts Succession Plan in Place

Andrisen Morton, Denver’s premier men’s store, has put a plan in motion that is intended to ensure its survival well into the future.
Over the next four years, Craig Andrisen, who founded the store with David Morton nearly 40 years ago, will transition into a different role within the company. And Lindsay Morton, David’s daughter, who has worked with Andrisen in a buying capacity at the business for the past decade, will take over his role.
“This is about brand perpetuation,” said David Morton. “Neither Craig nor I are 30 years old anymore and we wanted to keep the business going.” Lindsay Morton is the only second-generation family member in the company, he said, so it made sense for her to take on a larger role. “She’ll be heading the next generation of leadership,” her father said.
David Morton said he will continue to be involved after the four-year transition period when Andrisen is expected to focus full-time on running the company’s Peter Millar stores. Andrisen Morton has operated the Peter Millar store in the Cherry Creek North development in Denver since 2015 as well as a unit at the Broadmoor Resort in Colorado Springs, which opened last year.

Avengers: Infinity War Confirmed When It Takes Place in the MCU Timeline

Warning! Full SPOILERS follow for Avengers: Infinity War. Check out our SPOILER-FREE review right here.

Last year, Spider-Man: Homecoming threw a wrench in the MCU timeline with its opening title card that said the movie takes place eight years after the Battle of New York from the original Avengers movie.

Avengers is supposed to be set in 2012, so that means Homecoming, Ant-Man, Civil War, and Black Panther all take place in 2020, which shifts the entire MCU timeline four years and makes some earlier dates incorrect. Be sure to check out our full breakdown of the entire MCU timeline in chronological order right here.

Today, we take a look at A Quiet Place – a unique new supernatural suspense thriller written and directed by The Office’s John Krasinski, starring Krasinksi and Emily Blunt as a couple who must raise their children in silence because the mysterious monsters who surround their farm are attracted to noise. This Paramount Pictures release lands in theaters April 6th.

Balmain Opens First West Coast Flagship, on L.A.’s Melrose Place

LOS ANGELES — Balmain today opens its first West Coast flagship, at 8421 Melrose Place in West Hollywood. The 2,400-square-foot, one-story boutique will be the first freestanding store to house the complete offering from the recently relaunched accessories line, as well as the brand’s men’s, women’s and kid’s clothing collections.
The Los Angeles unit will also feature design elements of the new store concept, which is still “a work in progress,” according to chief executive officer Massimo Piombini. The fully realized retail concept will make its debut next year at a location that has yet to be determined.
“For as long as I can remember, Los Angeles has always been this incredible source of dreams and inspiration. Pop culture actually made me fall in love with the city even before I had set foot in it,” said Olivier Rousteing, Balmain’s creative director. “Later, my California friends introduced me to the singular lifestyle, relaxed glamour and exhilarating openness, diversity and freedom that one finds there, and that intoxicating West Coast spirit has been reflected in my collections. So, in many ways coming to L.A. is almost as much as a homecoming as the opening of a new flagship.” Rousteing and Piombini will celebrate the

Blossom Première Vision Continues to Carve Its Place

PARIS — Blossom Première Vision is carving out a niche on the Paris trade fair circuit with its edited selection of weavers and leather manufacturers showing at the Palais Brongniart, the former stock exchange in central Paris, on July 4 and 5.
Now in its third edition, buyers praised the timing of the show, which allows them to begin to gather inspiration for pre-selections before the summer break, while exhibitors lauded the busiest edition yet.
“The dates are great because we can start work on pre-fall before the summer,” said Sarah Missakian, head of collections for Joseph. “The main PV show, in September, will already be too late for that,” she said.
“Right from the opening of the show we have felt a true energy, much more than at the first two editions,” said Eve Corrigan, president of Malhia Kent. “We’ve had back-to-back appointments, which wasn’t the case for the first two editions. Visitors are arriving with real creative ideas, and they are concentrated on what they want. The dates are good, given how the seasons are getting more and more advanced.”

Stephen Colbert Suggests The Perfect Place For Donald Trump To Testify Under Oath

President Donald Trump says he is fully prepared to testify under oath on his interactions with former FBI Director James Comey.

But to ensure Trump’s total honesty during any possible hearing, “Late Show” host Stephen Colbert has an idea for where it should take place.

And that’s on an “Access Hollywood” bus:

Colbert tweeted his suggestion, which referenced Trump’s 2005 bus ride with former “Access Hollywood” host Billy Bush, on Friday afternoon.

During the now infamous trip, Trump was caught on a hot mic bragging about grabbing women’s genitals. He later brushed off the comments as “locker room talk.”

Colbert’s Twitter followers appeared to agree with his venue idea, and some even suggested using a locker room as an alternative location in which Trump would speak the truth:

Brazil’s Fabiana Milazzo Plans U.S. Debut With Melrose Place Store

Brazilian designer Fabiana Milazzo is introducing her blend of handcrafted femininity and responsible entrepreneurship to the U.S. market via her new store in Los Angeles.
Known for her designs that are enhanced by artisanal embroidery, macramé, crochet and beading, she flips the script for what is considered formal and casual. A black gown has a relaxed feel with netlike sleeves and corded rope framing a high slit, whereas a sweatshirt stitched from two different shades of blue sparkles with intricately sewn beads on the front.
“I like to mix elements,” she said through an interpreter, her husband Eduardo Carvalho. “I make the party dresses less formal and enrich the casualwear.”
Readying to unveil her first Stateside sales point on Feb. 22 in a 1,300-square-foot space on Melrose Place as the recession in her country deepens, Milazzo hopes the U.S. grows to become the biggest market for her $ 5 million company. Dwelling Place: A Plantation Epic

Dwelling Place: A Plantation Epic

Published some thirty years ago, Robert Manson Myers’s Children of Pride: The True Story of Georgia and the Civil War won the National Book Award in history and went on to become a classic reference on America’s slaveholding South. That book presented the letters of the prominent Presbyterian minister and plantation patriarch Charles Colcock Jones (1804 1863), whose family owned more than one hundred slaves. While extensive, these letters can provide only one part of the story of the Jones family plantations in coastal Georgia. In this remarkable new book, the religious historian Erskine Clarke completes the story, offering a narrative history of four generations of the plantations’ inhabitants, white and black. Encompassing the years 1805 to 1869, Dwelling Place: A Plantation Epic describes the simultaneous but vastly different experiences of slave and slave owner. This upstairsdownstairs” history reveals in detail how the benevolent impulses of Jones and his family became ideological supports for deep oppression, and how the slave Lizzy Jones and members of her family struggled against that oppression. Through letters, plantation and church records, court documents, slave narratives, archaeological findings, and the memory of the African-American community, Clarke brings to light the long-suppressed history of the slaves of the Jones plantations-a history inseparably bound to that of their white owners.

WHEREABOUTS: STEPPING OUT OF PLACE is an anthology of the best nonfiction stories from Outside In Literary & Travel Magazine, an online journal founded in 2011. A Pedagogy of Place

This timely book offers an alternative vision for outdoor education practice. A Pedagogy of Place calls into question some of the underlying assumptions and ‘truths’ about outdoor education, putting forward alternatives to current practice that are responsive to local conditions and cultural traditions. In this renewal of outdoor education philosophy and practice, the emphasis is upon responding to – and empathizing with – the outdoors as particular places rich in local meaning and significance. Current outdoor education theory and practice is influenced by cultural ideas about risk and adventure, and by psychological theories of personal and social development. However, in recent decades, the professional discourse of outdoor education has made a noticeable shift which has resulted in a mismatch between theory and practice: traditional notions of proving oneself ‘against’ the challenges of the outdoors are antithetical to the development of an empathetic relationship with outdoor places. A Pedagogy of Place is the first of its kind to articulate a renewal of philosophy and practice for outdoor education that is in keeping with the educational needs of today’s young people as they grapple with considerable social and ecological changes in a rapidly changing world. The authors draw extensively on international, national, and local literature, and provide compelling case studies drawn from the Australian and New Zealand contexts.

Any one can use these cards but ACRX is focusing on those who are uninsured, underinsured, or on Medicare. The ACRX cards are now in Spanish as well.

American Consultants Rx made arrangements online for the ACRX card to be available at http://www.acrxcards.com where it can also be downloaded. This arrangement has been made to allow organizations an avenue to continue assisting their clients in the community until they receive their orders of the ACRX cards. ACRX made it possible for cards to be requested from online for individuals and organizations free of charge. Teyonah Parris Promptly Put An ‘Old Man’ In His Place After He Inappropriately Touched Her Hair

It’s been said so many times, you would think it was common knowledge: Don’t touch a black woman’s hair, or a black man’s hair, or anyone’s hair at that — especially without permission.

Sadly, some people are still grappling with practicing common sense and have to learn some lessons the hard way. That is precisely what happened this week when actress Teyonah Parris was approached by an overzealous stranger who couldn’t keep his hands to himself.

On Monday, the “Mad Men” actress, who usually wears her hair in beautifully elaborate natural styles, was out dining with friends when she said an “old man” approached her and grabbed her hair. Not only did she put the rude man in his place, she also publicly shared the shocking ordeal via her Twitter account.

Here’s a recount of what Parris said happened (our jaws are still on the floor):

Who Picked This Place?

Who Picked This Place?

Book Summary: Who Picked This Place? is a question you may ask about a lot of the destinations described in this laugh-out-loud collection of travel stories. Other questions may arise, as well. Who vacations among insurrectionists? Who goes on holiday in the Arctic ice pack? Who, on a Mexican ramble, runs into a troop of hostile monkeys? Who, on safari in East Africa, gets mistaken for a CIA agent? Who goes to Panama and ends up in the jungle with a band of near-naked natives? The answer, in every case, is the unfortunate author of this book. Join him and his bird-watching companion, Anne, and discover why the road less traveled will probably remain that way.

Choosing Joy in a Selfish Place

“Remember to stop and listen for the birdsong :)”

On a typically busy day, my phone lit up with this text message from my mom while I was running errands. “Ugh, I don’t have time to listen for birdsongs! I have s**t to do!” I thought as I checked the time. My mother is a particularly optimistic person, and in the moment I didn’t have the patience for her optimism. But then I stopped, frowned–is this the person I have become?

The Harvard environment can feel like it breeds negativity. After spending months in hibernation, we emerge from our caves, blinking at this bright orb in the sky. We complain about the dining hall food, the weather, the lack of gender-neutral bathrooms–all of which warrant improvement, to be certain, but when these criticisms linger in our brains for too long they start festering there, hatching other baby complaints. On a campus filled to the brim with people accustomed to analyzing their way to success, this isn’t all that surprising.

But more than negativity, this environment can breed selfishness. Everyone here is overcommitted in some capacity, and it shows in both our G-Cals and our pace of life. The constant busyness is a way of constantly to one-upping one another, even if these obligations make us miserable. And because we are kept so wrapped up in extracurriculars and exams so as to not have a moment’s silence, we have no time to reflect upon the relationships and ideas that matter. We have no time to let significance percolate, to meander through a farmer’s market or visit a library “just because” (or if we do, we post it on social media, thereby externally validating our deviation from the burnout norm). We have no time for the birdsong.

I have noticed a build-up of negativity and selfishness in myself this past year. When I came back in the fall after a semester abroad, I was eager to prioritize catching up with old friends and new, and it seemed like others felt the same. But quickly that optimism and patience waned and I fell victim to the email blackhole, filling up every spare moment with white noise, rather than letting the silence sink in. I realized that there were few moments during the week when I wasn’t 1) starting at a screen, 2) drinking, 3) working out, or 4) sleeping, and that scared me. I allocated my time drastically differently than I had in South America or even at home, where I felt like my eyes were wider and my ears perked in hopes of keener observation. I suppose it was possible to have taken things more slowly, but everyone else’s velocity pressured me to speed up. My parents always told me I would experience peer pressure, but I never thought it would come in the form of “How much work do you have this weekend?”

This idea of dwelling less on the negative has cropped up in many a conversation lately, and is especially important as we transition into the “real” world. Embracing these last couple of weeks is difficult to do if we are constantly criticizing, quantifying the validity of our experiences by counting the number of “likes” on our Instragram photos, rather than internalizing our own happiness. I don’t want my last memories of college to be “filtered,” so to speak, by others’ perceptions.

But in shedding negativity, I am not talking about not being sad, or ignoring mental illness. Quite the opposite. I feel that a good cry and confiding in others is in fact what many of us need, perhaps more often than we’d like to admit. There are too many of us who try to make our lives appear spotless from the outside, despite inner exhaustion or defeat. No, what I am talking about is seeking joy. I am talking about being more present in a place that shoves the future down our throats at every opportunity. I am talking about prioritizing happiness and wholesomeness as something we need to cultivate, something that requires time and prioritization. Hundreds of free s’mores won’t change anything unless we let ourselves and others be still and do things that don’t contribute to our résumé or our online personae. Sometimes we need the constant buzz to subside.

So go on, have a picnic with your friends and don’t worry about having a profound discussion. Try hearing the city, noticing the patterns in the bricks or the clanging sound when somebody steps on a loose manhole cover. Take out your headphones and listen to the world. Maybe there’ll even be a birdsong.

    Tynie’s Place

    Tynie’s Place

When Investigator Cooper Billings carries Sylvia Huston into the emergency room, her blood saturating his hands and his clothes, she becomes his. He doesn’t care that his partner accuses him of thinking with his dick or that her godfather is his boss, the lieutenant, or that her mother gives him the stink eye when she catches him sleeping next to Sylvia in a hospital bed. Or even that Sylvia vows she’ll never love a cop. Lucky for Coop, Sylvia is an earthy, sensual woman, entirely responsive to his heated touch. Once he has her in his bed, he’s sure he’ll wear her down. Sylvia does her best to resist Cooper. He’s bossy and always thinks he’s in charge. He’s also extremely determined to have her. Strong, handsome and hot, he’s hard to refuse. Maybe she could be falling for him. But nothing matters more to Sylvie than Tynie’s Place. She’s a midwife, and her birth center is dedicated to the poorest of women and babies. When it comes under threat by gangs vying for control of the drug trade, Sylvia risks her life to defend it. Cooper can’t save her until she learns to trust in his love. Only then will he have her safe in his arms. About the Author: Rebecca SkovgaardRebecca Skovgaard is a midwife in Rochester, New York. She and her husband are raising (yes, still) their three children, who give them great pride. She believes that if you live in Rochester, you can never have too many spring bulbs in the garden or Christmas lights in the trees. Under the pen name Rachel Billings, she has published several erotic novels.

A Quiet Place: The Windhover Contemplative Center at Stanford

“The concept of wings as metaphors for the soaring of one’s mind suggests a sense of contemplation, a sense of spirit…”

    – Nathan Oliveira

    2014-10-18-windhover_pano.jpg

A panoramic view of the Windhover Contemplative Center

The newly opened Windhover Contemplative Center, a 4,000 square foot rammed-earth and wood structure which occupies the former site of a parking lot, wouldn’t exist without a deeply held conviction of the late Nathan Oliveira (1928-2010): that quiet contemplation feeds and fuels the imagination.

Years of working in the silence of his own studio and also the solace he found during long walks in the peaceful Stanford hills — where he delighted in watching soaring birds — convinced Oliveira that each of us has an inner imaginative world that blossoms through observation and meditation. “If you persist and you believe in it your world opens up to you,” Oliveira once stated. “Sometimes that takes an entire lifetime.” Beginning in the 1970s Oliveira worked on images of birds and flight that culminated in the paintings now permanently on display at the center. These images, in turn, led to the idea for the Windhover, which will extend the artist’s uplifting vision into the future.

    2014-10-18-Center001.jpg

A detail of Nathan Oliveira’s Diptych

Oliveira’s Windhover paintings take their name from a poem by Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844-1889), that uses the flight of a falcon as a metaphor for spiritual striving and realization. A portion of the poem is etched into reflective glass visible near the building’s entrance. The imagery of the four Oliveira paintings on view at the Windhover includes wings, catenary curves and a kestrel, all presented on semi-abstract grounds.

Designed by Aidlin Darling Design, the glass-enclosed center shows the influence of Japanese architecture. As they approach the building, visitors will pass through a long stand of bamboo that delineates a kind of barrier between the outside world and the center’s meditative space. In the building’s interior are three rooms that feature four Oliveira paintings — Big Red, Diptych, White Wing and Sun Radiating — all of which are visible from both inside and outside the building. Skylights and motorized louver drapes provide carefully modulated natural light. The thick rammed-earth walls, made from soil excavated directly from the site, help moderate heat and sound.

    2014-10-18-outside_pond.jpg

    The Reflection Pool

A reflection pool near the building’s entrance features two “scholar’s rocks” that are in fact a pieces of architectural debris from the university’s boneyard. The sound of running water, which flows into a rectangular fountain, helps dampen outside noises. A pebble-floored Zen garden rimmed by benches appears at the building’s opposite end, sheltering a single tree and another small fountain.

    2014-10-18-water.jpg

    An Interior Fountain

Stanford’s Office of Religious Life is overseeing the Windhover, which will provide a quiet alternative to Stanford’s relatively busy Memorial Church, which hosts services, weddings and concerts. The center fits in well with two of Stanford’s current initiatives — the Wellness Initiative and the Arts Initiative — and compliments the display of three Oliveira paintings in the new Anderson Collection at Stanford. The Windhover Contemplative Center joins Houston’s Rothko Chapel and James Turrell’s “Twilight Epihany” at Rice University as one of a slowly growing number of American structures that meld contemplative practice with the visions of modern and contemporary artists.

    2014-10-18-10575146_10152750475238566_7450278687759817612_o.jpg

    The Reflecting Pond

In a 2009 speech in Vancouver, the Dalai Lama offered his opinion that “The world will be saved by Western Women.” During my visit to the Windhover Contemplative Center a group of Stanford women chatted on the benches of the Zen garden and shared their sense of excitement about the new center. I couldn’t help envisioning these young women growing into adulthood, their imaginations sheltered and nourished by the Windhover, to fulfill the Dalai Lama’s prediction.

‘Mad Men’ Review: Everyone’s Out Of Place In ‘The Runaways’

Don’t read on unless you have seen “The Runaways,” the fifth episode of “Mad Men’s” final season.

“This is the best place to be right now.” — Megan

Wrong. Almost everyone in “The Runaways” was out of place or out of their element, and quite conscious of that fact. And I’ll say more about that in a minute, but first, well, wow. You can’t make the claim that “Mad Men” denies the viewer a full range of experiences.

First, we had the AMC After Dark scene of Don having a three-way with Megan and her friend Amy. And then we had something completely different: Michael Ginsberg proudly presenting his sliced-off nipple to Peggy. Excuse me for a minute while I go drink the entire contents of my liquor cabinet.

Yeeeeow. I feel scarred from having written the above sentence about Ginsberg’s body part; seeing what was in that box was worse. There’s a mental image I’ll never be able to remove from my brain — Scout’s honor.

As wildly different as those two moments were, this is “Mad Men,” so the moments shared a thematic link, as did much of what occurred elsewhere in “The Runaways.” As I noted above, almost every character stood on unfamiliar terrain or felt deeply alienated from what was going on around them.

Even though Don may have succumbed to the charms of Megan and her friend, there was reluctance in everything he did when he was out in California. He felt left out at her party, he tried to ignore her dancing with another man and he sensed that there was something odd about Stephanie’s quick exit from Megan’s pad. Don was so uncomfortable that Harry Crane, of all people, turned out to be a sight for sore eyes. Don couldn’t wait to get away from all those pot-smokin’ hippies and go drink manly alcohol in a dimly lit bar. There’s only so much extramarital flirtation and banjo a man can be expected to endure.

Ginsberg’s unease, at least in his own mind, had an explanation: It was all the computer’s fault. He was so rattled by that humming monolith that he actually went to Peggy’s house, a weird place for him to end up on a Saturday night. There, Ginsberg found one of the episode’s many odd pairings: Peggy and little Julio from upstairs. In an episode full of characters experiencing discomfort and disconnected states, it’s wildly ironic and very sad that Ginsberg actually found relief from his distress. Unfortunately, his “relief” was a symptom of profound mental illness.

On the other coast, Betty had a party that was about as different from Megan’s bash as it could be. Another irony: Despite her stable and moneyed environment, Bettty was every bit as disconnected from her husband as Megan was. There were a lot of people who couldn’t be trusted in this hour: Henry couldn’t trust Betty to keep her mouth shut about her political opinions and discuss only safe, non-controversial topics. Megan (speaking for herself, rather than Don) didn’t trust Stephanie to deal with her situation in the ideal way — whatever that meant — so she sent her packing. The subtext was, of course, that Megan felt threatened by Stephanie’s easy emotional intimacy with Don, something that Megan always had to fight for (and despite her efforts, her bond with Don was clearly slipping away).

Betty, not surprisingly, didn’t trust Sally to take care of herself and her precious nose (and if I were Henry, I wouldn’t trust Betty around any of those kids, given that Betty’s only response to any setback is petulant rage. Gene and Bobby, start packing for boarding school now).

It was bittersweet to see Bobby finally have someone to talk to (though even he felt out of place in Sally’s little-used bedroom). Sally was yet another character who was away from her usual spot. She was not at her school, but stuck in Betty’s orbit, the absolute last place Sally wanted to be. Despite the episode’s title, Sally didn’t run away — Henry took Sally to the doctor in the morning — but almost everyone in this hour was in flight from someone or to a new place.

Even Harry wasn’t where he was suppose to be — he ended up in Megan’s house, with a woman who was most certainly not his wife. Spotting Don, Harry gladly fled that uncomfortable situation.

Ah, finally we come to the one person who was in his element in this hour. That’s not to say that Don was comfortable in much of this hour: For one thing, he was very annoyed that he didn’t get to swoop and take care of the pregnant Stephanie. That situation tailor-made for Don: She was a beautiful, exotic, intelligent woman who was dependent on Don for her day-to-day existence. But Don wasn’t allowed to save the day, because a put-out Megan basically sent Stephanie packing.

But all the L.A. annoyance was just the prelude to Don’s discovery about the cigarette account. Toward the end of the episode we got, of all things, a vintage Don Draper pitch, just when I’d stopped expecting those to happen anymore. Classic Draper: He took a situation in which he was not wanted and which was, in fact, part of a scheme to get rid of him — and he turned the tables on his enemies and ended up making himself essential to the client. Just look at the smug look he wore as he hailed a taxi at the curb. Draper is back, baby.

It really was Don’s ideal kind of situation: He loves being the underdog, the guy who, to all intents and appearances, has no cards left to play. The joke’s on you, Cutler and Lou: Don may not be able to connect in person with Stephanie or connect emotionally with his wife, but put his back against the wall in a business situation and there’s a good chance he’ll do something nobody will soon forget. This time, he made an impression in a good way — this was not the Don of the legendarily disastrous Hershey’s pitch. This was a guy who’s played office politics for a long time and could, if he wanted to, run circles around a vindictive mediocrity like Lou Avery.

This time, Don wanted to do just that, and he nailed it. (That said, this is not the Don of Season 1. That little scene just before Don entered the breakfast meeting with the cigarette guys was sheer perfection. Doubt washed over his face, and Don quickly mastered it, but we knew he was much more nervous than he let on.)

Without an elegant segue, I’d like to turn to the problem of Megan. I don’t quite get why she appeared to be fighting so hard for her marriage. Last time we saw her, she appeared to be on the road to accepting that her relationship with Don was winding down. Los Angeles appears to be the place for her — she certainly felt more at home at her Laurel Canyon party than she ever did as host of Don’s “Zou Bisou Bisou” blowout. She’s got her own circle of friends and her own life. Don’s made it clear that New York is his home. It didn’t make sense to me to see her go to such lengths to keep her relationship with Don going.

The problem of Megan pre-dates this season, of course. Megan is largely a blank slate — she’s defined by her relationship with Don, and I don’t have a great sense of who she is or what she wants outside of that. I can imagine the internal emotional and intellectual life of Peggy, Pete, Joan, Roger or Don, for example, but that’s just not the case with Megan.

This season especially, the show appears to be changing who she is week by week, according to the needs of the story rather than the (admittedly indistinct) personality of the character. For a few seasons, she seemed like a sensible and smart young woman, but out of nowhere, she became a semi-crazed director-stalker out in L.A. She was righteously furious at Don’s deception about his job suspension and his refusal to join her on the West Coast, but this week she’s got rid of Stephanie, tried to make Don jealous with another guy and had a three-way in a desperate attempt to keep him interested.

All these things don’t strike me as different facets of her character: They seem to me like evidence of the fact that the writers don’t have a great grasp of who she is or what makes her tick. It also says to me that the writers have story needs they need her to fulfill and who she is changes from week to week based on the plotting needs of the moment.

Regardless of the inconsistent writing for Megan, it’s clear that Don and Megan’s marriage is extremely shaky. As I’ve said before, Don’s first and only real love is his work, and it’s clear that that interests him once again, and he’s merely going through the motions with Megan. Now that he scents a huge account and sees a possible new role for himself at the firm, he can barely sustain a morning-after conversation with Megan, let alone her pal Amy.

Also on shaky ground: The relationship between Betty and Henry. The only real reason I think Betty wouldn’t consent to a divorce is because she’s already been divorced once and she couldn’t handle the social ostracism that would come from being twice divorced. That said, she herself put her finger on the problem that I’ve complained about forever when it comes to Betty: She’s too passive, too reactive. If she’s is so fond of thinking for herself, she should do something with those opinions and that knowledge. Giving Gene baths, turning Bobby into an anxious wreck and threatening her daughter with physical harm don’t appear to add up to a full-time job, and she certainly appears to want more in her life than she currently has.

Don wanted an attractive, capable accessory when he went after Megan — what he got was a woman with her own wants and interests, and thus he eventually lost interest. Not unlike Don, Henry wanted a woman he could save — a pretty blonde doll who would look good on his arm and who wouldn’t have ideas of her own. Henry also didn’t get what he wanted, but he also knows that divorcing Betty would likely end his political career. Somehow those two, I think, will find separate orbits for themselves and remain together on paper and emotionally very far apart.

For his part, Don couldn’t wait to leave Los Angeles — which he knows is not the place for him — and get back to the one place that has always made sense to him: the office. Amongst all these disconnected, lost people who failed to make real connections in this purposely disjointed hour, Don stood out. As he stood on that curb, he knew exactly where he belonged.

    “You’re incredible.” “Thank you.”

Oh, Don Draper. You may have your faults but I can’t wait to see you stick a (metaphorical) knife in Lou Avery’s back. Or his front. Whichever you prefer.

    Hail of bullets:

    • It’s so weird to see Caity Lotz on “Mad Men” after two seasons of seeing her as Sara/The Canary on “Arrow.” I kept expecting her to ninja-fight somebody.
    • Scout = Don Draper. Both can take anything but an order!
    • A fairly standard sub-theme in the episode: The clash between the Establishment and Those Irreverent Young People (i.e. the “flag-burning snots”). Lou couldn’t stand the fact that his employees thought his comic was corny and outdated (he really lost them when he compared his work to that of Dylan. You may have miscalculated a bit there, Lou). But his disgust was reflected in Betty’s condescending remarks about the Young People Today and their lack of respect for authority, etc.
    • Now that Anna’s gone, Stephanie’s the only person left in Don’s life who has the right to call him Dick. I think that means a lot to him, for complex reasons. By the way, I don’t mean to imply that Don only cares about Stephanie because she ignites his savior complex. I also think he sincerely likes having “family” in the sense that other people do. There’s not much about Don/Dick that feels normal, and having a “niece” allows him to feel more like other normal family folk, I suspect.
    • This week in Lou is the worst: Keeping Don late and then not looking at his work until Monday anyway.
    • I think Amy was into having a three-way because she’s actually in love with Megan. Just a theory.
    • Just to go micro for a second, I loved one subtle moment in the bar between Don and Harry. A semi-drunk, nervous Harry started sharing work gossip with Don, but Harry closed up again when Don didn’t treat him like a friend. Don instantly sensed what Harry needed and clapped him on the back, acted friendlier and ordered more drinks. He went from Batman to work pal in the blink of an eye. What Harry didn’t realize was that it was all an act. Don just had to know what Harry knew about the new account Jim Cutler and Lou Avery were going after. In any case, in that moment, he read Harry perfectly. When Don’s on his A-game, there are few who can touch him.
    • I really thought Lou was going to fire Stan when Stan said, “You?” That whole scene in Lou’s office was a classic moment of “Mad Men” comedy in an episode that really needed it. Because none of us can unsee what was in Ginsberg’s box.
    • Speaking of Ginsberg, I know I’m not the only one who detected signs of psychosis or schizophrenia not long after he made his first appearance on the show. I always had a feeling he was going to lose it some day, but that didn’t make the pathos of his breakdown any easier to bear. I don’t know if Ben Feldman will be back, but if not, here’s to a really wonderful performance as Ginsberg. The character could be quite dryly funny at times, but there was always a deeply rooted humanity about him — an intensity and a wellspring of compassion that lurked just below the surface. Part of the reason the breakdown was so sad was because Ginsberg was always just a little to sensitive. He always felt things too much. That fed his creativity, but it also fed his madness, which overtook him in the end. Poor guy.
    • Speaking of great performances, Elisabeth Moss did a wonderful job showing Peggy’s range of reactions to Ginsberg’s descending madness. I laughed out loud at the way she said “Time to go” in her apartment, and her horrified reaction to Ginsberg’s gift was quite memorable as well. But what sticks with me most is the mixture of fear, revulsion, shock and sadness that washed over her face as she edged out of the room and away from Ginsberg. She truly liked the guy, and in that moment she knew that his life as he knew it was over.
    • Nice of Stan to go to the hospital with Ginsberg. Stan’s always up for a joke and a toke, but he’s also a really good friend.

Ryan McGee and I talked about “Mad Men” (as well as “Penny Dreadful” and other shows) in last week’s Talking TV podcast, which is here, on iTunes and below.

    Jo-Ann Fabrics: A Forsaken Place

There are select errands in life that you know are going to be hell on Earth even before you step foot out the door. You know there’s going to be an excessively long line. You know they are going to only have one person working despite the excessive unmanned counters that speak to a time when this place of business actually gave a shit. And you know that you will have to muster every ounce of your patience and compassion for other human beings to get that which you seek. Places like the post office, DMV, the deli counter and the bank are probably coming to mind. Lest we forget Jo-Ann Fabrics.

Just yesterday, I made a stop there to get some holiday fabric for a Christmas stocking I want to sew for my new baby girl. And somehow, like an abused woman blacking out the details of her attacks, I had forgotten what it actually takes to accomplish purchasing fabric there. The trip seemed harmless at first, but I should’ve heeded the nasal-searing stench of the cinnamon pinecones at the store’s threshold, for it tries to hide the atrocities committed within its walls.

I quickly chose my fabrics, knowing full well that I had little time to meander as life with a newborn baby has me on the tight milk leash. I headed to the fabric table, which I will subsequently refer to as the “hellmouth.

As I approached it, I noticed that there was some kind of waiting system going on that didn’t utilize a standard line. People were spread around the hellmouth — slack-jawed and slumped against anything they could find to support their lifeless bodies, like wounded soldiers at a makeshift medical tent. I spotted the machine with those paper number thingys and joined my fallen brethren. They were on number eight, and I had number 14. I had no way to gauge what I was in for, but by the looks of these sad sacks, it would be an eternity.

The smart move here would’ve been to just leave. But I couldn’t. My precious little girl would not go stocking-less just because I couldn’t handle Jo-Ann Fabrics. And then there was the fact that I already knew I would never be able to go back there. I had to sack up and be strong, because I knew I could not bring myself to return to that desolate strip mall which included the ever-popular Steinmart and what I assumed was the last standing Jazzercise studio, unless I misjudged it and it was actually an ironic hipster bar.

The parking lot was completely lawless a la “Mad Max.” There was no good way to enter it nor exit and that should’ve tipped me off that things were not quite right there. The lot was vast and like lost souls, cars rambled every which way across empty aisles with painted lines for parking spots that no car would ever fill. I imagined the construction crew who built this strip mall going over the plan, “Oh, a Jo-Ann is going in here? Well then fuck it.”

Back to the hellmouth. I clung to my paper number — my Charon’s obol and tried to inhabit a positive attitude. This is going to be a great exercise in being Zen. Life gives us these moments to push us to our edge and ultimately help us grow. I would not let myself get to the place (read drooling against upholstery) that these other people had. I was better than that.

I focused in on the two Jo-Ann fabric cutters working at an ludicrously slow pace — as if on purpose — making no eye contact and seemingly unaware of the human element that surrounded them. They moved about as if they had never waited in a line for anything. I pursed my lips, squinted my eyes and breathed in. This was not going to be easy. And then I saw that Cutter Number One was finished and we were on to customer number nine already! Oh wait, not yet. It appeared that Cutter Number One decided that this would be the perfect time to tidy up the already tidy inner-workings of the hellmouth. She rearranged stacks of fabric, unrolled them for no reason only to brush them off and re-roll them. Oh and what was that, a bolt of fabric without a tag on it? This was the ideal time to look through an archaic black three-ringed binder to find a price among about a thousand SKU numbers. And not only that, but since no one was waiting (insert the sound of eyeballs cutting through flesh. Yes, the sound of eyeballs), why not cut off the edges of every roll of fabric nearby so that they are perfectly, excruciatingly straight? Never mind the slumping carcasses with arms barely clinging to their gargantuan bolts of fabric. At this point, I found a rack of upholstery and leaned my body against it and actually closed my eyes. I can do this. I’ll just use this as a break, yes a break. A welcomed chance to recharge. Thank you Jo-Ann Fabrics for this mini gift. I was living in the moment while also living in gratitude (extra points).

I can’t fucking take it! But I couldn’t leave. It truly was purgatory. This went on for about 20 insufferable minutes. The fabric cutters made no acknowledgement of any of us. Their eyes stayed low. God forbid they made eye contact. And none of us could muster a word. It was as if a dark spell had been cast.

At this point, I was losing my mind for a variety of reasons: One was that I was appalled at how quickly my Zen attitude survived — about three minutes. Two, I come from a family that’s obsessed with the quality of customer service in even the most minute of exchanges and I find it self-centered to always be critiquing minimum wage workers on how well they treat you. But now I wanted both of these fabric cutters fired. And better yet, I wanted Ms. Jo-Ann Herself to make an example of them. I might even go so far as to say that I wanted Ms. Jo-Ann Herself to torture them with pinking shears. And lastly, I had a six-year-old son to pick up from school in two hours, and I wasn’t sure that I’d even be out of there by then. And when I would tell the principal and my crying, confused and sensitive son that I was late because I was at the hellmouth, they would simply say, “Why didn’t you leave?” and I just know they would not understand why I couldn’t and then I would have to tell them about the lawless parking lot, the burning cinnamon stench, Cutters Numbers One and Two and the mass slumping — and they would not understand. They could not understand.

About a half hour in, my baby started fussing. YES! YES, give our people out here a voice! Cry the tears of a thousand crafters who simply wanted to make a fucking Christmas stocking but who were brought to their knees because two fabric cutters could not manage to cut fabric with deftness, friendliness or the humanity to look up and for the love of God say, “Thanks for waiting, we’ll be with you in a moment.” I then visualized the next part of this tragic tale in which I had to bare my breast to feed my crying baby right there in the heap of fleece in the hellmouth. And I knew Cutter Number Two would not go for that. Hell no. She’s a crafter all right, but not the sweet, motherly kind, but instead the stern, woodworking and spray-painting kind. She was reminiscent of Large Marge from “Pee Wee’s Big Adventure” — older and gruff and I was pretty sure her eyeballs could explode out of her face whenever she wanted. Even though my baby’s cries subsided, I scrambled to come up with a story that would suffice and justify the milky mess among the fleece that I was sure to find myself in. I would tell her that I was buying this fabric to make a nursing cover and well, it took too long. This is your fault Cutter Number Two. You made me do this. You made me nurse my baby with all these half-alive onlookers waiting for their turn to cross the River Styx. Shame on you Cutter Number Two, shame on you.

I was pulled out of my daydream by a woman asking Cutter Number Two if they sold cushions in size different than the one she was holding. How dare she not take a paper number to even speak to Cutters Number One and Two? “Nope,” Cutter Number Two said without even looking at the cushion nor the cushion-carrier. I could sense that Cutter Number Two was happy that this poor woman would now have to scour the Earth for her precious cushion. Cutter Number One, who was young and a little asexual, offered (without looking up, naturally), “I think there’s a Cushion World somewhere around here, but I think they moved. I’d Google it if I were you.” The cushion woman was nearly sweating. We could all then see that she didn’t speak English very well and didn’t understand any of what Cutter Number One had said. But she could smell the tension and didn’t dare ask for it to be repeated. She turned away, bowed her head and moved on with her life, cushion less and broken. My heart softened and I wanted to shout after her, “I will help you Google it!” but I couldn’t speak. There was no more water in my decaying body and my mouth would not open.

Forty-five minutes later, I was barely carrying a pulse when the unthinkable happened. Cutter Number Two called my number. It was time. I was the chosen one. I peeled myself off the end cap I’d been laying on and rolled the squeaky stroller to the heart of the hellmouth. I was faced with a dilemma: Now that I was in the driver’s seat, should I dish back the unfriendly filth these two had spewed over all of us, or should I take the high road. I thought about my family whom I’m sure would’ve immediately laid into Cutter Number Two, so I resisted my DNA and chose the high road. I didn’t know where this was coming from, it was as if I was possessed or had forgotten the 45 minutes of my life that had just been pillaged from me, but I was actually friendly with Cutter Number Two. It must’ve been that I knew I would be getting my life back soon. How the faintest glimmer of hope can lift the soul. I spoke in concise sentences so that those whom came after me would not be burdened by my needs or extra chatter. Because of this, I was pretty sure I got the wrong amount of fabric, but fuck it, there was no going back. Cutter Number Two mumbled about their “system” needing to reboot and my knees buckled. I hadn’t remembered shopping at Jo-Ann Fabrics being this much of a soul-sucking experience but one thing I did suddenly remember is that their fucking fabric computer calculator things NEVER work. EVER. NEVER EVER. Ms. Jo-Ann Herself, why will you never implement fabric computer calculators that work? This is essential to your business. Why have you forsaken your own company? It dons your name — why have you forsaken your name, Jo-Ann??

Shockingly, the machine only took about 10 extra painful minutes to reboot and in the blink of an eye, it was over. I had been spared. I turned around to exit the hellmouth and somehow behind me, people had multiplied. And I use the term “people” very loosely. It’s as if Sleestaks had replicated during my interlude with Cutter Number Two. There were a confusing amount of males, with their mouths agape, slowly moving in on me and none of them even seemed to be carrying fabric nor had any need to be at the hellmouth (except for the fact that I’m pretty sure it’s their breeding ground). Part of me wanted to stick around and study them, but my new mom paranoia kicked in and reminded me that they were probably just Juggalos hopped up on bath salts and were going to surely eat my baby, so I fled immediately.

I sprinted my victory lap to the cashier — yes, after you wait in the eternal line to experience the hellmouth, you get to wait in another line — Ms. Jo-Ann Herself, have you ever been to your own store — it’s HELL ON EARTH! My genes got the best of me, and I was already concocting what I would say to the cashier and perhaps even the manager about everything and how a big change needs to be made here, although at this point I was sure there was no one manning this ghost ship. I got to the cashier only to find that she probably dug herself out of her own grave to come to work that morning and was pushing 95. I shoved my money in the corpse’s bony hand, bolted of out there and then fell to the earth and prayed to the god of all that is good in this world in thanks for letting me live and see the light of day again. And for the fabric for my baby girl’s stocking.

Some will say I could’ve left at any moment and avoided this whole experience. Those people will be right.

Putting Computers in Their Place: Computer Chess and The Nerd Origins of Today’s Technopoly

Computers need to be put in their place. They really do.

That’s why I’ve been looking forward to the DVD release this week of Andrew Bujalski’s cult Sundance hit Computer Chess. Computer Chess finally spills the beans about where these little monsters came from in the first place.

Every time I pick up a newspaper these days — I’m one of the twelve people left who still read physical newspapers — I read about how computers are spying on us, destroying jobs, or infuriating health insurance customers. Like a hungry Rottweiler off its leash, computers are getting out of control and tearing up the neighborhood.

If you believe what you read, computers are also in the process of wrecking the book publishing and music industries, eliminating celluloid photography — and just this week computers claimed their latest victim, one near and dear to my heart: the local video store, as Blockbuster finally succumbed to laptops, smartphones and tablets as the preferred ways of renting all those movies you couldn’t afford to see (or were too embarrassed to see) when they were in theaters.

    2013-11-08-VideoStoreaisle.jpg

No more video stores — who would’ve believed it, even just ten years ago? That means no more pimply teenagers to recommend midnight horror movies to me (“Sir, I definitely recommend C.H.U.D. over TerrorVision“), no more aimless browsing or listening to neighbors argue over which Steven Seagal movie to rent, no more cheap licorice sticks at the checkout counter.

I never thought I’d miss those things so much — but suddenly I do. And it’s all because of our ‘friend’ the computer. Computers are becoming like the Yankees during the ’90s: gobbling up everybody else’s talent, then telling us how good it is for baseball.

The propaganda over the wonders that computers supposedly bring to our lives is getting out of hand. In the very least, it’s out of proportion to the destruction computers are simultaneously causing — that ‘disruptive’ effect Silicon Valley gurus salivate over, like vampires at a blood drive.

So as Twitter — the company currently reducing our public discourse to snarky, 140-character outbursts — celebrates its gaudy IPO right now, I’d like to recommend a new movie out on DVD this week that casts digital technology in a very different light: Computer Chess.

You probably haven’t heard of Computer Chess. After all, it has no stars in it. Neither Disney nor Sony are building spin-off franchises around its characters. Chris Hemsworth doesn’t swing a hammer in the film, and Kate Upton wasn’t invited to the premiere (although it would’ve been funny if she was).

What Computer Chess has going for it, though, is that it tells the unvarnished, gawky truth about the early days of this public menace we’ve come to know as the ‘computer.’

Actually, Computer Chess isn’t all that obscure a film. Written and directed by mumblecore auteur Andrew Bujalski, the film debuted to critical acclaim earlier this year at Sundance (where it won the Alfred P. Sloan Prize), where I had the pleasure of seeing the funky little movie in a packed house with an appreciative crowd. It was a total hoot, especially for people like me who remember how uncool computers used to be before Steve Jobs arrived on the scene. In fact, you arguably can’t appreciate Jobs’ legacy properly unless you’ve seen Computer Chess — and witnessed what a clunky, nerdy, socially maladroit computer world Jobs inherited.

Computer Chess is set around 1980, in a shabby suburban motel that serves as the film’s entire setting over the course of one weekend. The aristocracy of the computer science world – the geek gods of Cal Tech, MIT, Bell Labs and elsewhere — have gathered for their annual computer chess tournament, with the winning machine getting the chance to face off against the pompous tournament host, who has never yet lost a game to a computer.

So it’s game on, as Apple IIs and Tandy TRS-80s — and their nerd jockeys — take each other on for all the marbles.

The film follows the impossibly awkward programmers as they compete with each other for the (slightly dubious) title, haul blocky computer mainframes around on push-carts, debate the future of computers in late-night bull sessions, and make cringe-inducing attempts at romance and/or sexual conquest with the tournament’s lone female competitor, a hopelessly bespectacled programmer named Shelly. The programmers also have a few droll encounters with a New Age group that shares the motel with them, who try to open up the nerdy programmers’ repressed emotional lives.

    Good luck with that.

The performances Bujalski gets out of his mostly non-professional cast are uniformly natural and believable — with special kudos going out to Patrick Riester and Wiley Wiggins as the no-nonsense leads, Myles Paige as the egomaniac/would-be lothario ‘Michael Papageorge,’ and Robin Schwartz as the sweet, ungainly female programmer.

Indeed, Bujalski’s strategy of keeping things real (several cast members are actually programmers themselves) is the best thing Computer Chess has going for it. It’s easy to see how this film could’ve been botched by importing a Michael Cera or Jonah Hill into the mix with their pre-packaged nerd schtick. Computer Chess is too austere and genuinely indie for such Hollywoodisms — to the point that the movie was actually shot in low-res, black-and-white 4:3 analog video using a Sony AVC-3260 camera, dating from the late 1960s.

Bujalski clearly intends Computer Chess to feel like a ‘found object’ of the era — and the film does seem incredibly authentic as a depiction of early-80s geek culture.

The special kick of watching Computer Chess, though, is knowing how the awkward misfits depicted in the film — and the big, blocky, semi-functional machines they cart around — will someday conquer the world. Today’s gods of Silicon Valley (who are apparently getting pretty full of themselves these days) — the slick young guys in hoodies who debut their stock offerings with multi-billion dollar valuations, or who get played by Jesse Eisenberg or Justin Timberlake in the movies are of course no longer the introverted weenies of yesteryear, as depicted in Bujalski’s film. Today’s techies are more likely to drive Porsche 918 Spyder-hybrids, date swimsuit models, or eat granola parfait at Palo Alto’s University Cafe.

What a difference 30 years makes.

    2013-11-08-ComputerChessstill.jpg

Computer Chess is probably not the kind of movie these newer guys — and they’re still mostly guys (with all due respect to Sheryl Sandberg) — want to watch, because it doesn’t suit their current self-image. Computer Chess is like that embarrassing family album from the ’70s you keep in the attic, filled with horrid images of bad hair, braces and bell-bottom jeans — where everybody looks like they just stepped off the set of The Hardy Boys. It’s the kind of thing your relatives pull out during the holidays to keep you humble.

And this is actually why Silicon Valley’s geek aristocracy — and you know who you are – should embrace this film, because it does something vital: it humanizes them, at a time when a lot of us feel that what they’re doing to our society is, well, inhuman. Reading about the NSA and Healthcare.gov these days is depressing enough, but it’s even worse after years of reading about how companies like Google and Facebook have been undermining our basic sense of privacy, which is the delicate foundation of our freedom.

By the way, Computer Chess actually hints — in a sly, fun way — that the Cal Tech team’s fictional TSAR chess program might be the forerunner of dystopian supermachines of the future, like Skynet from the Terminator films. But the movie is pretty gentle and non-conspiratorial about these things. It could get much worse.

For example, Computer Chess could’ve more been more hard-edged, like Panos Cosmatos’ dystopian cult thriller Beyond the Black Rainbow, released here in the U.S. in 2012. Similarly set in the early 1980s, Black Rainbow depicts a young woman’s escape from a controlling, futuristic New Age research institute. The film’s high-tech ‘Arboria Institute’ — led by a psychotic, permanently disfigured scientist — harbors pretentions of harnessing technology in the achievement of higher spirituality. (By the way, the ‘Arboria Institute’ could easily have been the forerunner to the sinister, New Agey internet company ‘The Circle’ from Dave Eggers’ new novel of the same name.) Black Rainbow‘s Dr. Barry Nyle — along with his mentor, Dr. Mercurio Arboria – represents the dark side of the early ’80s tech and self-actualization gurus depicted comedically in Computer Chess.

Of course, even Black Rainbow doesn’t compare to a film recently unearthed by Criterion: Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s 1973 sci-fi classic World on a Wire, which originally aired on German television as a two-part miniseries. In World on a Wire (based on American author Daniel F. Galouye’s novel Simulacron-3), an ‘Institute for Cybernetics and Future Research’ develops a computer simulation program featuring an artificial world — based on the real one — with over 9,000 avatars living as human beings, unaware that their world is only a simulation subject to manipulation. The purpose of the simulation? Advanced market research, of course. Things get dicey when the movie’s hero, Dr. Fred Stiller (actor Klaus Löwitsch), begins to suspect that this simulation may actually have multiple layers — and that he himself might be one such avatar.

Such dark visions suggest the will-to-power, the urge to control and manipulate, that many people now associate — with good reason — with a fully computerized society (what Neil Postman back in 1992 called a ‘technopoly‘). Whether that society is controlled by unseen government bureaucracies or huge and indifferent corporations hardly seems to matter anymore.

So the honeymoon is now over. Computers just aren’t that cool any more — mainly because of all the precious things in our lives that they’re destroying. That’s why a lot of us are now looking at the fine print when we buy in to the latest gadget or app, as we ask ourselves this basic question: as shiny and empowering as this new piece of digital technology is, what is it going to destroy that I don’t know about?

All of this stuff seemed a lot more innocent back in 1980, when Computer Chess is set. Of course, it’s worth pointing out that Computer Chess is basically about the race to create a machine that can outperform and (thereby replace) a human being. Back in 1980, that premise just seemed a lot funnier and more charming than it does right now.

Right now computers just don’t know their place.
