Helbers Suspends Collection Due to Production Woes

LONDON — Paul Helbers has put his eponymous men’s wear collection on ice due to production problems and confirmed Friday that the fall 2017 collection had not been delivered to clients.
The Dutch designer cited “a considerable controversy with our production coordination platform in Italy” and said “further development of the Helbers wardrobe will be put on hold for the moment.” He indicated that there were some quality issues. “The affordable high quality of the line is what we believe part of our initial success and requires a rigorous manufacturing standard.”
Helbers said that although the brand will be unavailable on the market, “I will continue to consult on collections, style, interior decoration, photography and visual communication.”
He said his signature brand would remain loyal to the ateliers with which it has been working, and that he is currently studying “alternative set-ups for the coordination of our production and logistics. The deliberate small scale of our company is to be able to work with specialized ateliers who can craft with skill and innovation.”
Helbers launched his first 20-piece collection in January 2016 in Paris, and became known for his laid-back tailoring, rich colors and fabrics. Before going solo, he did a five-year stint as

Abbie Cornish Talks Movie Production at Elie Saab Show

PRODUCTIVE WORK: Abbie Cornish is turning her hand to movie production. The Australian actress will be producing the upcoming “The Color of Flesh,” due to begin shooting Stateside next year, she revealed at the Elie Saab show on Saturday afternoon, where she joined guests including French actress Emmanuelle Béart.
“It’s kind of fun to be able to be on the other side,” said Cornish of her new role.
She will also have a starring part in the movie. “I play the portrait painter for Marie-Antoinette; it’s a love triangle between my character, Elisa, Marie-Antoinette and Count Alexis,” she revealed.
Otherwise, Cornish has been busy of late. She has no less than six movies coming out over the next six months, including Dean Devlin’s thriller “Geostorm,” due out Oct. 20, and comic drama “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” set for release in November.
It was the first time in a while that Cornish had attended a fashion week event, she said. “I haven’t been doing anything like this for a few years, I’ve literally just been working. I just took two months’ holiday – I did nothing, it was amazing, but it took me a couple of weeks just to learn the art of doing nothing.”

Creative Playground Launches to Help Companies With Branding, Production, Celebrity Influencers

NEW YORK — Dari Marder, Nicole Winnaman and Maria Dolgetta have joined forces to create a new branding and marketing agency, Creative Playground, aimed at fashion, entertainment, beauty and wellness industries.
Their alliance has been a long time in the making — though one that came together without any trace of a headhunter. On the October day in 2015 that Marder exited the Iconix Brand Group as global chief marketing officer, Winnaman, a public relations and communications specialist, was the first to contact her. “Nicole said, ‘This is the day I’ve been waiting for for years,’” Marder said with a laugh Tuesday.
The pair first met in 2008, when Winnaman pitched Britney Spears to Marder for a Candie’s campaign. After working together for two years, they stayed in touch and always tried to work together. “Maria and I always felt that Nicole was the closest to being just like us. She was a businesswoman, but a creative and a mom, who somehow found this great balance to raise these beautiful girls. She was just juggling it just like we were,” Marder said.

ABC Suspends Production Of ‘Bachelor In Paradise’ Over ‘Allegations Of Misconduct’

After only a week of filming, ABC has decided to suspend production of “Bachelor in Paradise” Season 4 in Sayulita, Mexico, as the company investigates “allegations of misconduct.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. released a statement on the incident, saying:

We have become aware of allegations of misconduct on the set of “Bachelor in Paradise” in Mexico. We have suspended production and we are conducting a thorough investigation of these allegations. Once the investigation is complete, we will take appropriate responsive action.

The show, which brings together contestants from previous seasons of “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette” to provide them with another shot at finding love, was slated for an Aug. 8 premiere. Now, it seems the series might not air at all.

TMZ reports that the situation allegedly involved contestants DeMario Jackson and Corinne Olympios, who were both well-known personalities from their respective appearances in the “Bachelor” franchise. The two were reportedly involved in some inappropriate, sexual activities in a swimming pool, according to sources who spoke with Jackson and TMZ. Still, there are varying accounts of what actually happened, which is why Warner Bros. launched a full investigation into the situation and sent the rest of the cast back to the U.S.

Reality Steve (Steve Carbone), a blogger known for his “Bachelor” spoilers, posted a photo of the cast at the Puerto Vallarta airport on Sunday, writing on Twitter that they were apparently being flown to Houston. Jackson and Olympios are not pictured in the group photo.

The new season was set to feature Bachelor Nation favorites, including Raven Gates, Amanda Stanton, Alexis Waters, Taylor Nolan, Robby Hayes, Ben Zorn, Jasmine Goode, Vinny Ventiera and Alex Woytkiw.

HuffPost has reached out to ABC, as well as Jackson and Olympios, for an update on the suspension and situation.

‘The Last Ship’ Halts Production Amid Eric Dane’s Battle With Depression

“The Last Ship” has halted production so lead actor Eric Dane can treat his depression, People reports.

“Eric asked for a break to deal with personal issues,” Dane’s rep said in a statement to outlets. “He suffers from depression and has asked for a few weeks of downtime and the producers kindly granted that request.”

Variety, citing an “insider,” noted that shooting for this summer’s fourth season has already wrapped ― but the hiatus is delaying production of the fifth season. The two seasons were being filmed back-to-back.

“He looks forward to returning,” the rep added, per Variety.

In the popular TNT series, Dane stars as the captain of a naval destroyer on a mission to save the world after a a global pandemic.

The 44-year-old actor, who previously starred on “Grey’s Anatomy,” has publicly dealt with personal issues before. He entered rehab for a painkiller addiction in 2011. Earlier, he weathered a scandal over a nude tape, in which he and wife Rebecca Gayheart appeared with another woman.

There Are So Few Women In Music Production, No One Bothers To Count

In February, Taylor Swift took the stage at the 58th annual Grammy Awards to accept Album of the Year on behalf of the large team behind her highly celebrated album “1989.” During her speech, Swift touted a message of female empowerment, encouraging women to take credit for their own success.

“There are going to be people along the way who try to undercut your success or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame. But if you just focus on the work,” the pop star said, “[someday] you will look around and you will know it was you and the people who love you who put you there. And that will be the greatest feeling in the world.”

Swift hoped to encourage women to take credit for their own success. The message was well-intentioned, but diluted somewhat by the people surrounding her: a large number of producers, all of them male. Quickly, the criticism started to fly online — why couldn’t such a powerful female pop star, especially one as publicly feminist as Swift, find some other women to collaborate with?

But the truth is, the low number of women involved in the making of “1989” is actually fairly high by industry standards. A group of 19 people, aside from Swift, are credited with making the album. Included are two women: Imogen Heap and Laura Sisk. And while neither of the women appeared behind Swift at the ceremony, their presence in the studio meant that nearly 11 percent of those involved in creating “1989” were female. A sad number, but even more tragic is that it is still better than the gender balance in the industry at large.

For the few women in those technical roles, their daily work life is sometimes flavored by skepticism from their male peers: Is she really here to work?

“A lot of people assume I’m someone’s wife or girlfriend when they first see me in the studio,” Sisk, a sound engineer who’s worked with pop stars including Carly Rae Jepsen and Shakira, told The Huffington Post in an email. “I’ve gotten used to giving overly technical explanations of why I’m doing what I’m doing, because I’m always questioned at every step.”

A few things to ponder when considering the state of female producers in the music industry: There are so few of them, we couldn’t find a single stock photo showing a lady on the technical side of the booth. There are so few of them, women in the industry are often asked whether they’re really getting help from a man. But most important, there are so few of them that audio recording associations haven’t bothered to count their number in over 15 years.

Look at the website for Women’s Audio Mission, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting women in audio production, and you’ll find a statistic that says only 5 percent of people who work in the production of music, television, news and film are women. It’s a figure occasionally referenced by media, and sometimes mumbled within the industry. (If music professionals don’t know the number of women producers exactly, they’re at least well aware there are not many.)

When reached for comment, WAM founder Terri Winston told HuffPost that “5 percent” number was actually an estimate made by the Women in Audio Committee of the Audio Engineering Society back in 2000. Today, Winston’s organization believes the number is even smaller than that, based on attendance at Audio Engineering Society conventions.

“It is still too small of a number to spend time measuring,” Winston wrote in an email. A representative from the Audio Engineering Society agreed, noting that time spent counting could be better spent on educational efforts. AES, which serves audio engineers and those in the “allied arts,” does not keep any more recent statistics on women producers, either, although a separate representative told HuffPost that 7 percent of AES members are women.

The number aiming to enter the field may be slightly higher. Susan Rogers, former producer for Prince and current professor at the Berklee College of Music, which offers a major in music production and engineering, put the number of women in those classes at around 10 to 15 percent. But in professional studios, there are signs that there are even fewer women that that.

Asked how many female producers she knew of, Shakari Linder, a female music producer who goes by TRAKGIRL and has earned credits with Timbaland and Omarion, among others, told HuffPost, “I can count on my hand, actually — probably five.”

Early on, Linder explained how she built mental “armor” to defend against subtle accusations against her professional abilities.

“Coming up, some men view women as, ‘Oh, they don’t know what they’re talking about,'” she said. “Once you hit that play button, it’s a whole different story.”

While there is an undeniable lack of female producers, any attempt to count their number would likely be complicated by the absence of any agreed-upon definition of what a “producer” does. Some involved in the production of audio identify as “engineers” taking on sound boards, while others have little technical expertise, focusing more on fostering working relationships between other producers. Still others might also be considered musicians. Some who do production work, including some women, therefore may not self-identify as such.

Album credits full of male names may also create the false perception of a male-only field that precludes women from joining in or getting credit when they do. Sisk recalled an incident where, after a week of recording, editing and mixing an artist’s work in the small confines of a studio, the artist sounded shocked to hear that she was actually serving as the audio engineer on his album. (Upon its release, she wasn’t credited.)

Claiming a producer credit for oneself can take a lot of confidence, according to Esthero, a singer who involves herself in every aspect of production. That’s a bold quality that she believes may not always come naturally.

“I have the audacity to call myself a producer,” Esthero explained. “I have the ego to be like, ‘Wait a minute! I did that. I participated in that. I made those choices. All those compliments you’re getting — I did that!’”

WAM, which counts about 850 women members, is one of a small handful of organizations working to ensure women consider audio recording a viable career option, having trained thousands of women over the past decade and placed them in professional roles. Another women-focused organization, Women in Music, offers panel discussions and networking events for women involved in music as producers, managers, attorneys and label executives.

It will take many more women to consider a career in music production for the gender imbalance to right itself. But changing the perception of behind-the-board roles as the realm of men is also a much-needed step.

In an interview with NPR, the singer Claire Boucher, who goes by Grimes, explained how making songs with other people is a gendered experience. Women, historically, create the “top line,” or vocal melodies, while men take care of the beats. Despite her experience in production, Boucher said she wasn’t allowed to touch a computer in those cooperative songwriting environments.

“I came in with experience as a producer and I wasn’t allowed to produce — so how could any woman who didn’t have experience as a producer ever learn how to produce?” Boucher told NPR. “If there are stereotypes of, ‘Women do certain jobs in music and men do certain jobs,’ the way the studio works, it’s not easy to escape that.”

Maxwell Strachan contributed reporting.

Village Theatre’s ‘Cabaret’ a Vibrant, Glitzy Production That Entertains From Opening Curtain To Final Ovation

Village Theatre’s production of the classic musical Cabaret keeps audiences engaged with dynamic singing, dancing and acting throughout the show. This is not an easy task when one considers the historic timeframe of the show – the end of a gala era as the Nazis came into power in Germany.

Then, there’s all the issue of anti-Semitism, which is addressed quite pointedly with the number If You Could See Her in which the Emcee serenades and dances with his “partner” – an actress dressed in a gorilla suit and wedding dress.
2015-06-03-1433291199-6725192-CabaretVillageT.jpg
This performance of Cabaret is, however, far from as dire as the stage appears prior to the show starting. In the beginning, the Kit Kat Klub is shown as it would be after the Nazis took over, but it magically transforms into the glittery, extravagant setting where almost anything is available and possible when the Emcee enters and begins introducing “the beautiful girls and boys.”

The Emcee is brilliantly played by Jason Collins, who morphs from one lavish costume to another while weaving a plot filled with both meaning and entertainment. Collins is beyond flashy, and he maintains the mantle of master showman while keeping the show both inviting and intriguing.

The other principle player who can’t be missed is Billie Wildrick as Sally Bowles. Wildrick dances and sings with a vibrancy that leaves the songs stuck in your head days later. And these two key cast members are brilliantly supported by the other actors, the highly innovative staging and a “house band” that becomes a character in and of itself as it rolls out to center stage on a moving platform from time to time. All of this makes Village Theatre’s performance of Cabaret a show that should not be missed. It’s well worth a drive from Seattle to Issaquah (or next month to Everett).

Cabaret plays at the Village Theatre in Issaquah through July 3 before moving to the Everett Performing Arts Center where it will run from July 10 to August 2.

John Galliano Inks Production Pact

PARIS – Ahead of its fall-winter 2015 women’s show in Paris today, John Galliano said it has inked a licensing agreement with Italy’s Modalis to produce its men’s and women’s ready-to-wear.
The first collections under the new pact are to be unveiled in June for the women’s resort and men’s spring-summer 2016 seasons.
In addition, the Galliano company plans to combine its signature collection and Galliano second line into one range, positioned as a contemporary offering that “combines the brand’s history of craftsmanship and extroverted elegance with an accessible attitude and price point.”
Modalis is based in Italy’s Umbria region and was formerly known as Studio Roscini, which dates back to 1990.
The Galliano company has recently produced its collections in house in the wake of the financial troubles of its previous licensee Ittierre SpA.
John Galliano sat out recent men’s seasons as it searched for a new manufacturing partner. Bill Gaytten is John Galliano’s creative director.

Bookmaking: Editing, Design, Production

The unchallenged bible of the publishing industry, Bookmaking is the introduction to editing, design, and production for newcomers, acclaimed as the premier text for students as well as a comprehensive reference for experienced hands. First issued in 1965 and revised in 1979, it has now been thoroughly reorganized and updated to reflect the profound changes in the bookmaking process and in publishing practices in the twenty-first century. The computer-centered method of getting from the author’s conception to completed print-or electronic-book has come to dominate publishing, involving not only the setting of type but also the preparation of manuscripts, editing, illustration creation and processing, page makeup, color separation, and preparation for printing. Even more significant than its use for these individual procedures is the computer’s role in creating an integrated system that is greater than the sum of its parts. Covering all the publishing processes up to distribution, Bookmaking addresses the needs of publishing professionals, whether they do the work themselves in-house or have it done to their specifications by outside suppliers. But this new edition is not only about technological change; all aspects of bookmaking have been reconsidered. The text that served the industry for nearly three decades has been updated where appropriate, while still providing the unchanging facts and principles of book craft.

Production Rendering: Design and Implementation

In the past, rendering systems used a range of different approaches, each compatible and able to handle certain kinds of images. However, the last few years have seen the development of practical techniques, which bring together many areas of research into stable, production ready rendering tools. Written by experienced graphics software developers, Production Rendering: Design and Implementation provides not only a complete framework of different topics including shading engines and compilers, but discusses also the techniques used to implement feature film quality rendering engines. Key Topics .A Rendering framework for managing a micro polygon-oriented graphics pipeline .Problems presented by different types of geometry showing how different surface types can be made ready for shading .Shading and how it fits into a rendering pipeline .How to write a good shader compiler .Ray tracing in a production renderer .Incorporating global illumination into a renderer .Gathering surface samples into a final image .Tips and tricks in rendering About the authors Mark Elendt, Senior Mathematician, has been with Side Effects Software Inc, Canada for 11 years and has written at least 5 renderers over these years.
