Karlie Kloss and New ‘Project Runway’ Judges on the Show’s Kinder, Gentler Reboot

When “Project Runway” launched in 2004, it pulled back the curtain on the fashion industry, made Michael Kors a household name, and elevated the role of designer into the pop culture pantheon. Running for 16 seasons with guest judges including Kim Kardashian, Victoria Beckham, Sarah Jessica Parker and Ciara, the show introduced such memorable moments as the Gristedes challenge and the Thunder From Down Under challenge. And it gave millions of wannabes dreams of making it like Christian Siriano, the biggest success story among the winners.
After a nearly two-year hiatus, the show returns on March 14 to Bravo for its 17th season, reimagined for now. New host, model Karlie Kloss, who is also executive producer, is joined by a new mentor (Siriano) in the Tim Gunn role, and three regular judges — Elle magazine editor in chief Nina Garcia, a veteran of the show’s earlier iteration; former Teen Vogue editor Elaine Welteroth, and designer Brandon Maxwell.
The 17 designers competing have a range of experience, and hail from all over the world, including one contestant who is a Syrian refugee, and others who are from India and Samoa. The show will put a new emphasis on inclusion, featuring models of all races

Perry Ellis Supports Hispanic Culture With Cubavera Art Project

Perry Ellis International Inc. took its mind off Thursday’s shareholders’ vote to go private by occupying itself with creative pursuits.
National Hispanic Heritage Month may have ended Oct. 15, but that hasn’t stopped the company from observing its Latin American roots. Its Cubavera men’s wear brand keeps the party going with a live auction of original commissioned artworks through Nov. 1, within its multifaceted campaign #CubaveraIcons. Three works by Gustavo Novoa, Alexander Mijares and Edward Granger, who previously created custom guayaberas at a live painting event and has collaborated with Hermès and Ralph Lauren, premiered on the brand’s and artists’ web sites and social media channels before their live auction on Paddle8.com.
PEI president and chief executive officer Oscar Feldenkreis said the artists were each chosen for their unique style. “They represent a multicultural mix, again in line with the Cubavera brand, which has translated across demographics and has grown into a staple for a multicultural and multigenerational consumer,” he said.
The only parameters for the artists were to draw inspiration from the collection. Novoa zeroed in on its signature prints and PEI’s home base in Miami with a painting of Florida panthers primping in tropical shirts. Titled the Front Runners, his work starts at $ 3,500

The new project, dubbed Blossoming Fashion Conversation, will showcase the number of posts and the reach of a series of LFW-related topics on social media and other digital outlets. Topics will include sustainability, model health, luxury and streetwear climates, designer and production heritage, emerging talent, diversity in the industry and overall innovation.
The data will be collected from keywords and hashtags on social platforms, as well as the British Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar web sites. Artist Mirabelle Marden Installs ‘Garage Sale’ Retail Project

Mirabelle Marden, an artist by practice, trade and lineage, continues to toy with nostalgic elements of the retail experience.
Today she will reveal a new shoppable installation, “Garage Sale,” inside her gallery Plain Pleasures, which is located on the second floor of an unnamed Chinatown mall in Manhattan. Over the last two years, the two-story building at 75 East Broadway has evolved into a nexus for experimental retail, spearheaded by artists, designers and thinkers.
Marden opened her first effort there, called Plain Pleasures Market in December — setting a colorful holiday souk stuffed with traveled souvenirs, friends’ craftworks and vintage odds and ends. In the months since, her mall space has become a revolving door of art shows and guest pop-up shops from friends like Stella Schnabel.
For Marden, keeping store at Plain Pleasures is about replicating travel experiences and “creating an environment. I’m making an expression of how I see things. Whenever I go somewhere I like to look at the markets and everyday stores — they let you experience a place.”
Garage Sale will include items sourced and rummaged on trips to Lisbon, Nevis, Marrakesh, Mexico City and Paris. “I wanted it to look like a storage space, I hung up old

Sync Performance Launches ‘Elevate the Athlete’ Project to Enable Shoppers to Support Emerging Athletes

COMPLETE SNOW JOBS: Internationally renowned athletes can really break the bank, as Floyd Mayweather can attest with $ 275 million in salary/winnings and $ 10 million in endorsements.
The quick-footed fighter tops the 2018 Forbes List of The World’s Highest Paid Athletes with Argentina’s leading soccer player Lionel Messi ranking second with $ 84 million and $ 27 million in endorsements.
With a reported $ 4 million in estimated earnings from sponsors like Burton and Beats by Dre, three-time Olympic gold medalist Shaun White was the highest-paid male athlete at this year’s Winter Games in PyeongChang. But the sponsored life is more of a challenge for unproven mountain athletes like ski racers, snowboarding and ski jumping even at the elite level. Snowboarder Jamie Anderson, who won two gold medals last winter, personally started pitching potential sponsors at the age of 10. Olympian Brian Fletcher worked part-time in a restaurant, snowboarder Jonathan Cheever punched the clock as a plumber and Ryan Cochran-Siegle worked at his family’s store to help get to this year’s Winter Games. To try to help offset athlete’s expenses — which extend beyond apparel and equipment — the Colorado-based brand Sync Performance has launched its Elevate the Athlete project. Tracy Reese Teams With Artist Mel Chin for Art Project Designed to Raise Awareness of Flint’s Water Crisis

EVERY LAST DROP: Conceptual artist Mel Chin recruited Tracy Reese to create a fashion element for his retrospective “All Over the Place” at the Queens Museum in New York.
Coproduced by the public art-focused nonprofit No Longer Empty, the exhibition will feature 70-plus examples of his work — drawings, paintings, sculpture, installations and videos. Running through Aug. 7, the multilocation show will include sites in Times Square and the Broadway-Lafayette subway station. Adept at revealing environmental and socioeconomic systems and injustices, Chin recruited the Detroit-born Reese for “Flint Fit,” a fashion project designed to magnify the water crisis in Flint, Mich.
At Chin’s suggestion, 90,000 used water bottles were collected by Flint residents, who continue to use bottled water for everyday purposes more than three years after lead-contaminated water became a citywide problem. Once shipped to Unifi in Greensboro, N.C., the bottles were shredded and converted into fabric. Reese then designed a water-inspired collection that included rainwear and swimwear. About 14 women at the St. Luke N.E.W. Center produced the nine looks, which will be unveiled in a fashion event Sunday in the museum’s Watershed Gallery.
Chin and Reese had never met before last summer, when he approached her about the prospect. “We

Gucci and Chime For Change Partner With Beyoncé and UNICEF for Charity Project

MILAN — On the occasion of World Water Day, Gucci and Chime for Change — the brand’s global campaign for gender equality — on Thursday unveiled a partnership with Beyoncé and Unicef USA to bring clean, safe water to Burundi.
Gucci committed $ 1 million to Beyoncé’s multi-year BeyGood4Burundi initiative launched last year with Unicef USA to support programs improving water, sanitation and basic hygiene practices in the hardest-to-reach areas of the African country, where nearly half the population has no access to safe water.
Gucci’s investment will help support the construction of 80 wells, providing access to clean water to more than 120,000 women, girls and their families. The wells will be in addition to the 35 already completed by the BeyGood4Burundi initiative, which is set to support 366,000 women and children by 2020.
“Gucci and Chime For Change are proud to stand with Beyoncé and Unicef to help change the lives of hundreds of thousands of girls and women in Burundi,” said Gucci’s president and chief executive officer Marco Bizzarri in a statement. “Through our commitment to BeyGood4Burundi, we continue the mission of Chime For Change to provide education, health and justice to girls and women globally.”

Project Elevates Partnership With NYFW: Men’s

Project continued to make its presence known at New York Fashion Week: Men’s by hosting a presentation for Michael Bastian, W.R.K., Faherty and M. Singer, four brands that often show within the Tents, the designer section of the trade show.
Project also hosted several other labels during the morning and afternoon sessions of New York Men’s Day.
Tommy Fazio, men’s fashion director of UBM Fashion, who hand-selected each brand, said this is the latest initiative in the company’s move to support American talent. It’s also an evolution of UBM Fashion’s new partnership with the Council of Fashion Designers of America that promotes the growth of emerging talent and the fashion industry as a whole.
“We are thrilled to have the platform outside of the trade-show floor in New York to champion men’s wear talent who represent the best of American designers. Having had the privilege of working with each designer at Project, we are excited to assist in presenting their fall 2018 collections by supporting CFDA’s NYFW: Men’s and NYMD,” Fazio said.

Moncler Launches Charity Project with UNICEF

WARM HEART: Moncler has partnered with UNICEF – the United Nations international children’s emergency fund, – to launch a charity project. Named “Warmly Moncler For UNICEF,” the initiative aims to provide clothes and survival kits to children and families in need who live in areas around the world with harsh winter weather conditions.
In particular, the outerwear specialist and the charity association – which operates in 192 countries, – will provide thermal blankets, hats, gloves, scarves, socks and shoes, in addition to fuel to warm up homes and schools. Clean water, food and medicines will be also included in the survival kits.
Previously, Moncler supported children in need by funding the Child Priority Foundation. For the occasion, the brand launched the “Moncler Toy” initiative, which combined art and fashion.
A quirky version of the brand’s iconic cartoonish duck that imparts washing instructions inside all of Moncler’s jackets was molded from glass resin with a three-dimensional effect. The statue was then handed over to British artist Stuart Semple, who manually reproduced a mountain scene onto the duck in black and white, and auctioned it off.
Established in Grenoble, France, in 1952, Moncler was acquired by Italian entrepreneur Remo Ruffini in 2003 and is publicly listed

Belstaff Teams With the Bloodhound Project on Jacket and Sunglasses

NEED FOR SPEED: Belstaff has teamed with The Bloodhound Project on a limited-edition jacket and sunglasses.
The Bloodhound Project is aimed at building a car that can set a new World Land Speed record of 1,000 miles an hour. The Bloodhound SSC, in development since 2008, is a supersonic machine comprised of a Formula One car, jet and spaceship. It has been designed with a jet engine and a rocket.
It is set to make its first run in public at Cornwall Airport Newquay in England on Thursday and will be driven by Andy Green, the current land speed record holder, who set a world record in October 1997 where he and his Thrust SSC team traveled at 763.035 mph.
“Andy and the team are exposed to extreme conditions including sun, heat and sand,” said Belstaff’s creative director Delphine Ninous. “We had to look to create a UV-protective material that is breathable and durable, with low flammability. The fabric is a double-sided stretch cotton ensuring ease of movement. M1992 to Guest as Special Project at Pitti Uomo

MILAN — Italian designer Dorian Stefano Tarantini is changing the name of his brand Malibu 1992 into M1992. The new moniker will make its debut during the upcoming edition of Pitti Uomo, running Jan. 9 to 12 in Florence.
“It’s not such a radical change,” said Tarantini, addressing his will to “polish, simplify the name and have a more neutral [starting point]” for his creative process.
“Malibu [1992] tied me too much to the city of Malibu and California, which will remain part of my [inspirations], but I preferred to shorten the name also because M is the initial of Malibu but also of Milan, which is my city,” he added. The designer further stressed the importance of having a “code name, which opens to more possibilities” and of “characterizing the brand with my products and collections,” rather than with a name.
Launched almost four years ago as an artistic, 30-minute video project, Malibu 1992 evolved into a fashion brand combining Tarantini’s tornado of inspirations, ranging from music to neoclassicism, from punk to Californian luxury.
After two seasons of runway shows in Milan, the brand will unveil its new name and fashion course in Florence, as it has been selected as a special project

The Family Behind Weatherproof Launches the Very Warm Project

Cousins Shai and David Peyser are helping their family, which owns outerwear brand Weatherproof, establish a bigger presence in the contemporary category.
They have partnered to introduce The Very Warm, a men’s and women’s outerwear line that will launch for fall. Each season, the brand will partner with artists to incorporate one-of-a-kind artwork into its products.
“I came into the business a couple of years ago and we decided to do something that was art inspired,” Shai Peyser said. “We wanted to start a conversation with outerwear and a way to do that is with the lining. I personally have a love for art and street art so we are incorporating that into the lining.”
For the first season, The Very Warm has tapped artists Trav, Jasper Wong, Morgan Lappin and Caleb Troy to create pieces for the lining. The collection includes coach jackets, reversible bombers and quilted parkas and retails from $ 189 to $ 375.
The line is being sold at Nordstrom, and beginning in October, the brand will host a three-month pop-up shop within Odin’s SoHo location in New York. The pop-up will include events every few weeks hosted by artists who have collaborated with the brand.

Gucci Launches Gucci Places Project

GOING PLACES: Gucci is reaching out globally in more ways than one. The Florence-based company is launching Gucci Places with the goal to invite people to explore locations that creative director Alessandro Michele has found inspirational.
The idea is to build a community and to encourage discovering interesting details about the places. Each Gucci Place will have its own dedicated badge and incorporate motifs that suggest the specific location.
The first Gucci Place to be unveiled will be Chatsworth in Derbyshire, England, where Gucci is now supporting an exhibition of clothing and memorabilia entitled “House Style.” The exhibition showcases clothing from the past 500 years that belongs to the Devonshire family. Glen Luchford also photographed Gucci’s cruise 2017 campaign at Chatsworth, one of Britain’s stately homes. The ads were fronted by British actress Vanessa Redgrave.
An exclusive selection of products based on those in Gucci’s Courrier collection has been created as part of a Gucci Places Chatsworth collaboration. The pieces all feature Chatsworth and Gucci Places patches and will be on sale only at the Chatsworth store, and Gucci’s Sloane Street store in London, from mid-July.
The Gucci app will add a new functionality to involve customers in the story of each designated place.

Persona Director’s New Project Seemingly a PS4 Game

Project Re Fantasy, the next title from Persona director Katsura Hashino’s newly formed development team Studio Zero, could very well be a PS4 game, if a job listing is any indication.

The listing, which can be found on Japanese careers site Levtech Creators (translation via Gematsu), is for “the production of character motions in a newly in-development PlayStation 4 game.”

While it doesn’t specifically mention Studio Zero, Project Re Fantasy or Atlus, the job coordinator notes the hiring company has a popular series with one entry that has sold over 1.5 million units. Since its launch in the west this past April, Persona 5 has sold incredibly well, with sales surpassing 1.5 million earlier this year.

Renzo Rosso Teams With Andrea Bocelli for a Charity Project

MILAN — Italian entrepreneur Renzo Rosso — founder of Diesel and of the OTB Group — and tenor Andrea Bocelli have joined forces and pledged their respective foundations in a charity project. The Only the Brave Foundation and Andrea Bocelli Foundation will rebuild the “Giacomo Leopardi” school in Sarnano, a historic Medieval town located in the region of Marche. The building and the area around it were deeply affected by the earthquake that hit central Italy last August.
“We wanted to help…for a long time now,” Rosso said. “Our philosophy is to follow the initiatives we support from the beginning till the end guaranteeing the respect of timing and investments,” he added, mentioning the restoration of Ponte di Rialto bridge in Venice in 2013 as an example.
Bocelli sounded confident about the success of the project, also considering the previous initiatives his foundation has been involved in since 2011, such as the construction of five other schools in five years.
The restoration work of Sarnano’s school has already been planned and will be started in the upcoming days.

Nike Collaborates With Emerging Designers on Elements of Style Project

NikeLab is turning its attention to up-and-coming designers.
The brand tasked Stavros Karelis, the founder of Machine-A, a boutique in London, with selecting five new designers to create looks based on the Air VaporMax sneaker, a new style that will be released on March 26, which is Air Max Day.
He chose Azar Rajabi, a Canadian designer who has interned for Damir Doma and Prabal Gurung; Shizhe He, a Chinese designer based in New York, and Central Saint Martins graduates Liam Johnson, Paula Canovas and Wanbing Huang.
Each of these designers used the VaporMax as a starting point for their creations.
Shizhe He utilized plastic packaging film that’s typically used to protect furniture during transit to build a dress. Rajabi used pearlized Neoprene mesh and texturized vinyl for her hooded creation. Johnson played with buoyancy and lightness for his abstract piece that’s meant to mimic clouds. Canovas worked with nylons and knots. Huang built a headpiece and full-length bodysuit inspired by the woven Flyknits.
NikeLab recently partnered with Riccardo Tisci to redesign the Nike Air Max 97 and they also opened a NikeLab store within Bergdorf Goodman’s men’s department.

Beta Project Avatar

Beta Project Avatar

When a powerful virtual agent makes its way out of the lab, the military will stop at nothing to get it back. Hays hacks into our greatest fears of technology while simultaneously tempting us with the phenomenal capabilities of twenty-first-century electronics. This smart, topical, furious-paced thriller thrusts world-class cryptographer Dee Lockwood against an array of rogue, sociopathic assassins intent on stealing a defunded military software application and igniting a Third Gulf War. Lockwood is on her way to a secret NSA conference when a vicious hijacking leaves her friend in a coma-but not before he has installed the last copy of BETA on her laptop and smartphone. When Lockwood overcomes her fear and provides the impetus for her fellow passengers to regain control of the aircraft, she imagines the terrifying ordeal is over. But it’s only the beginning. BETA is actually “Project Avatar,” a secret military software project that, after losing Congressional funding, was smuggled out of the Pentagon into the seemingly innocuous consumer-grade software application that wound up on Dee’s laptop and smartphone. Lockwood finds herself the target of UMBRA Special Forces commandos and the hijackers, who team up and try to kill her for the precious code. Lockwood enlists the support of her technical-genius friend Abe, as well as John, the handsome and mysterious former MI-6 agent. Mere steps ahead of the deadly commandos, Lockwood’s investigations lead her on a breathless flight from the clandestine NSA conference in the Arizona desert to an illicit financial operation headquartered in the Cayman Islands-via the historic streets of Geneva, the ancient royal palaces and gardens of Bangalore, and the jungle trails above Rio. Dee’s worst fears are confirmed when she discovers BETA’s true provenance and brings to light Operation Hydra, a shocking policy coup to initiate a Third Gulf War. With the countdown to Operation Hydra under way, Lockwood jets to the Caymans and join

Is The Broad a Great Public Collection or “The Largest Vanity Project of Our Lifetime”?

Eli and Edye’s Gift to Los Angeles: The Broad Museum

“I have always worked on a public collection,” said Joanne Heyler, Chief Curator of The Broad Art Foundation and Founding Director of The Broad, to an assembly of international, national, and local media gathered in front of the much-anticipated new contemporary art museum and permanent home of the art collection of Eli and Edythe Broad a few days before its opening. Heyler has been with the Broads since almost the beginning, working with them for over 20 years to develop the collection and their philanthropic projects, culminating with the establishment of the impressive Broad museum. Heyler’s emphasis of the word “public,” however, might seem curious, considering that the collection belongs to just two people. But, as Heyler explained, the idea of “the public” is crucial to the museum’s mission of reaching the widest possible audience for its collection of contemporary art, and to that end, The Broad, situated in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles, offers free admission. “This is Eli and Edye’s gift to Los Angeles,” Heyler stated proudly.

The Broad’s “cool storage” room showing a work by Paul Pfeiffer. Courtesy of The Broad and Diller Scofidio + Renfro. Photo: Iwan Baan.

The practical matters of opening the collection to the widest possible audience, however, extend beyond the borders of Los Angeles. The Broad Art Foundation, which was founded in 1984, was established as a lending program, making the collection’s works available to museums and galleries worldwide. Over 8,000 loans have gone out to more than 500 museums and galleries over that period of 30 years. Now that the Broads’ collection has coalesced under the roof of the new museum, this dedication to lending will continue as a primary function of the museum, and has even been built into the building’s design.

The Broad museum’s lobby with interior veil. Courtesy of The Broad and Diller Scofidio + Renfro. Photo: Iwan Baan.

The building, designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, is predicated on the concept of “the veil and the vault”: the vault being The Broad’s large storage area for the collection, taking up most of the museum’s second floor; the veil, a porous exterior structure forming a diaphanous cover over the interior vault, allows a diffuse natural light to penetrate the 50,000 square feet of exhibition spaces, located on the first and third floors. Approaching the museum from the street, the visitor is essentially invited under the veil, into a cavernous space with the grey mass of the vault hovering overhead. A pod-like elevator, stairway, and long ascending escalator pierce the vault’s interior, allowing the visitor to pass through it, and, from windows in the stairwell, offering an unprecedented glimpse into the inner workings of the museum. As lead architect Elizabeth Diller pointed out, the design “turned a liability into an asset,” transforming the usually hidden storage area into a main attraction.

Installation of works by Christopher Wool and Jeff Koons in The Broad’s third-floor galleries. Courtesy of The Broad and Diller Scofidio + Renfro. Photo: Bruce Damonte.

In the expansive space of the third floor galleries, the viewer is initially greeted by a large open space, full of diffuse filtered natural light, surrounded by massive works by Jeff Koons, Christopher Wool, Mark Bradford, Marlene Dumas, Julie Mehretu, and El Anatsui. For The Broad’s first hang, Heyler took a “straightforward, wide-lens, chronological approach,” beginning with a room devoted to Warhol, whose Pop-Art presence is felt throughout the collection. Standouts of the inaugural exhibition include an eye-popping enclave of Ellsworth Kelly works; Anselm Kiefer‘s historic epic Deutschlands Geisteshelden (1973), whose evocations of receding woodgrain are echoed in a Mike Kelley piece (Infinite Expansion, 1983) on the opposite end of the museum; and alternately, life-like and imposing human figures by John Ahearn and Charles Ray. Areas of darker subject matter contrast with the Pop influences–animal bones in glass cases and a dead sheep suspended in formaldehyde by Damien Hirst share a room with a photograph of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange by Andreas Gursky, evoking themes of death and despair, interrupted by the obligatory inclusion of one of Hirst’s spot paintings. Works by certain artists, particularly John Baldessari, Cy Twombly, and Jeff Koons, recur to a great extent throughout the museum.

Installation of works by Neo Rauch, Robert Longo and Mark Bradford in The Broad’s first-floor galleries. Courtesy of The Broad and Diller Scofidio + Renfro. Photo: Bruce Damonte.

What emerges from the Broad collection is largely a paean to painting and sculpture, a majority, unavoidably it seems, devoted to male artists. This tendency is somewhat disrupted by the inclusion of some major installations on the first floor: a wool tapestry by Polish artist Goshka Macuga, complemented by two performers clad in the artist’s digital-printed Lycra designs; a powerful and elegiac musical video installation by Ragnar Kjartansson (The Visitors, 2012); Takashi Murakami‘s epic mural-sized painting In the Land of the Dead, Stepping on the Tail of a Rainbow (2014); and the experiential and existential Yayoi Kusama Infinity Mirrored Room – The Souls of Millions of Light Years Away (2013), which purports to plunge the viewer to an endless space of reflection among a quiet riot of blinking LED lights.

Yayoi Kusama, Infinity Mirrored Room – The Souls of Millions of Light Years Away, 2013. © Yayoi Kusama, Courtesy of David Zwirner, N.Y..

Waiting for my minute alone with the infinity of Kusama’s installation, I overheard an outspoken journalist denouncing The Broad as “the largest vanity project of our lifetime,” a sentiment that, given the rise of private museums and foundations established by prominent art collectors in recent memory, is not an unusual one to hold. While the Broad’s collection is by no means a complete, unbiased view of the developments of contemporary art (and who can rightfully claim that, regardless of their private or public affiliations?), this sanctimonious attitude willfully ignores The Broad’s potential outreach to the widest possible public, and the benefits that can be derived from it. The Broad’s location, as a new jewel in a downtown revitalization project that Eli Broad has helped orchestrate, is not entirely without self-serving attributes, but it also makes the museum accessible to a much larger proportion of Los Angeles residents, particularly those from lower income, inner city areas. The other notable free admission museums in Los Angeles–the Getty and the Hammer Museum–are located a metaphorical stone’s throw from each other in the exclusive neighborhoods of Westwood and Brentwood on the west side of Los Angeles. The Broad, on the other hand, is right in the heart of the city, easily accessed by public transportation coming in from all across the Southern California region.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti also addressed the crowd at the press preview that morning, boldly proclaiming “Los Angeles the contemporary art capital of the world.” Nodding to the mayor, Diller acknowledged that The Broad’s construction in Downtown Los Angeles is part of a “larger urban effort,” and heralds the increasing concentration of cultural attractions in the city center. If one were looking for a popular mandate for the new museum and for Downtown’s greater art presence, The Broad has certainly proved it, booking over 85,000 free tickets in advance of its opening. But if it truly wants to fulfill its mission to serve the public, as one of the most accessible free-entry institutions in Los Angeles, it should recognize this as a unique opportunity to introduce the wide lens of contemporary art, in all its facets, to a public that may not have the opportunity to experience it elsewhere. One can hope that through special exhibitions and new acquisitions (it estimates that it averages one new acquisition a week), The Broad will discover, and embrace, its obligation to the public to truly represent the art of our time.

The Ashley Bouder Project Disappoints at the Joyce’s Ballet Festival

2015-08-13-1439427717-4672441-TheAshleyBouderProjectcAlexisZiemsk.jpg

The Ashley Bouder Project. Photo credit: Alexis Ziemsk.

The Joyce Theater has been choosing some questionable repertoire as of late.

First, the venue hosted Restless Creature and The Ashley Bouder Project in the same season, both spearheaded by New York City Ballet alumnae whose celebrity promised ticket sales, if not artistic value.

Second, and more importantly, it programmed choreographer Joshua Beamish three times in one summer, and never with success.

On August 8 and 9, The Ashley Bouder Project was invited to the Joyce as part of Ballet Festival, a two-week foray into what the 21st-century dance community can offer. The amiable man to my right explained that he was attending the entire series of six shows as an education in dance, a fact that disappoints after realizing that at least one of his experiences would probably dissuade him from ever returning to the theater.

Of course, The Ashley Bouder Project was the most popular show of the run, and people begged for seats regardless of price. Somehow, “bravos” echoed despite a banal bill filled with the kind of choreography that is pushing ballet into its grave. I’m sure that dance neophytes listened to the booming applause, stupefied. Was this the best that ballet could muster?

The hour-long performance (that felt never-ending) opened with Adriana Pierce’s Unsaid, a duet between Bouder and New York City Ballet corps newbie, Preston Chamblee. Pierce, a current dancer with Miami City Ballet, must have known Bouder when she was a student at the School of American Ballet or an apprentice with NYCB (indeed, the whole production felt like Bouder and her friends playing around at the expense of an audience). Nothing but a heartfelt favor can justify Pierce’s selection as one of three featured choreographers, as Unsaid was a clunky, inelegant pas de deux with little direction.

No drama was spared. The costumes — grey, sheer cloaks — were gaudy versions of those used in every other safe contemporary ballet, where the mood is pseudo-emotional, but no one quite knows why. The cloaks were awkwardly removed and replaced as Bouder and Chamblee messed with the sleeves to make them right-side-out after tearing them off moments before. The couple stood in stark spotlights, staring at the audience longingly. Sometimes, they tripped into each other as Chamblee spun into Bouder’s arms without control. There was so much concept, and absolutely no intention. Then, there was the fact that Chamblee could barely point his feet and in soutenu turns, his ankles were a ruler’s length apart. When the duet finally concluded, it felt like the end of winter.

The second work, In Passing, was less insulting, though it lacked organization. The short film by Andrea Schermoly included several beautiful snapshots, like when Bouder moved with abandon that you’ll never see from her at the David H. Koch Theater, where Balanchine demands structure. And so the choreography proved promising – really interesting, actually — but the video itself stumbled into clichés. Dancers lying in bed in lingerie. Dancers in a tunnel. Dancers in an empty auditorium. Dancers walking through the desert. Dancers everywhere but where they should be at a live presentation: onstage. It’s a shame that the 15-minute movie was Schermoly’s contribution to the project, as she probably could have managed a concert piece with a lot of heft.

And the grand finale: Beamish’s Rouge et Noir. The six-person disaster proved a few things — Amar Ramasar is an engaging, virile dancer who can make the most of a devastating choreographic situation. Alexa Maxwell, who joined NYCB’s corps in 2013, is unpolished but harbors great potential. And Beamish, who is part of the Joyce’s Young Leader’s Circle Committee (which may clarify the reason for so much favoritism), has choreographer’s block right now. Once again, he calls on an abstract aesthetic from modern art, with colors and shapes like Mondrian’s or (as Gia Kourlas noted) Matisse’s, but he does so with so little panache or innovation that what he concocts is truly an eyesore. He must be talented to have reached the heights he has. But at least in Rouge et Noir, he somehow takes six of the most accomplished dancers in the world and makes them look awkward, weak and amateur. My friend summed it up best with his comment: “You know the cartoons that make fun of abstract dance? Well this reminded me of those.”

If I didn’t love ballet and didn’t know what genius exists in the dance world, my trip to The Ashley Bouder Project might have been my last attempt at understanding the art form. Why would I, as a young adult trying to survive in New York City, pay for that? Why would I waste my Saturday night, waiting for ingenuity that never came? I would choose Netflix any day over suffering through a program as poorly articulated as The Ashley Bouder Project. At least then, I could find something to grapple with, a meaningfulness to explore.

The saddest part? There are incredible companies fighting for attention, and they would kill for an opportunity to perform at Ballet Festival.

Oh well. Maybe next time the Joyce will try something new.

‘The Trials Of Spring’ Documentary Project Amplifies Voices Of Women In The Arab Spring

A new multimedia documentary project is spotlighting the vital roles of women in the 2011 Arab Spring uprisings.

“The Trials of Spring,” is a series of six shorts, a feature film and news reports by The New York Times that offer a rarely seen look at the gripping personal experiences of female activists in the wave of revolutions in the Middle East and North Africa.

The films profile nine women across Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, Syria, Bahrain and Yemen, with each detailing their journey through uprisings and crackdowns. While each story is unique, they often share an arc similar to the larger political developments of the post-revolution countries in the region, where an initial hope for change is quashed by increasing repression and conflict.

In the Syria short, for example, archival footage shows four women known as the Brides of Peace defiantly march in protest of the Assad regime while wearing homemade wedding dresses. In interviews after fleeing the country, two of the brides describe how their triumphant demonstration caused security forces to imprison them for months.

trials of springKinda Zour, one of the Brides of Peace from Syria.

As the films show, many countries have regressed on women’s rights since the Arab Spring.

A 2013 United Nations report found that 99.3 percent of women in Egypt are subject to sexual harassment, and female activists have been forced to undergo virginity tests after being arrested for demonstrating. In an incident that sparked widespread outrage, police fatally shot female activist Shaimaa al-Sabbagh in the street during a protest earlier this year.

The team of filmmakers and producers, most of them female, presents the cross-platform project as a fascinating counter-narrative to misconceptions of women in the region as submissive to the repression of women’s rights. Instead, the films show brave acts of protest both at home and in the streets, and depict women as driving forces behind many protest movements.

“I went from I think a stereotyped understanding, to some degree, of the women in the Middle East and North Africa, to something that was more nuanced and understanding of their diversity and their strength and resilience,” said producer Beth Levison in a call with reporters on Tuesday.

Levison said stories about the Arab Spring lacked female perspectives, with media focusing mostly on men with guns and shifts in political power.

“I don’t think enough stories are told about the women who are the mortar, who are holding things together,” Levison explained. “I think that the narrative that’s often told about conflict is about who’s in what position, rather than about what’s happening on a day-to-day level to try to bring peace. It’s kind of like that old saying, ‘If it bleeds it leads.'”

anbar
Hend Nafea, a young religious Muslim woman whose story is a lead role in the feature film.

While the project puts a spotlight on activists, the films themselves are not heavy-handed works of advocacy. Instead, the works hope to amplify the voices of the women who are profiled.

“We certainly wanted to avoid the thought that here are some Western filmmakers trying to help these Arab women — because they’re incredibly strong women who can help themselves and are doing a lot to help their countries,” said the project’s Digital Director Lauren Feeney.

The short films will debut on June 7 as a special project on The New York Times homepage and will culminate with the feature focusing on Egypt that premieres at the Human Rights Watch film festival on June 12.

3 Things ‘The Mindy Project’ Taught Me

By now we’ve all been accosted by the news that Fox — the brilliant organization behind such gems as Bones! and The Swan! (note my sarcasm) — has canceled The Mindy Project.

Let’s all take a moment to sob. And sob some more. Now hiccup cry. Now breathe deeply. One more sob.

Onward.

I guess in some ways the cancellation makes sense. I mean, it was a witty, well-written, often insightful look into the lives of women. There were episodes that made me fist pump alone in my living room. Scenes that made me cry. And moments that made me feel less alone. It was groundbreaking in a way I’ve been begging female-driven vehicles to be for years. Rather than securing show’s future, all these things made the too-soon cancellation of the series practically certain from the first episode. Network TV is an aging behemoth that is sustained by soap operas and reality TV. Are there exceptions to this rule? A few. But they fill an ever-diminishing need. For the most part, anything that challenges or engages or lifts has no place on network TV. Because, like, that’s not the point.

Am I pretty fried that I no longer have a fall date with Mindy’s parents and Danny? Yeah, pretty much. Pretty fried. But I am also a little relieved on the behalf of the best show I’ve seen in the past 10 years. Mindy deserves to hang her Wreath Witherspoon in a home that feels lucky to have her.

I’ve got good hope that if a situation that is good for cast and crew presents itself, they’ll take it. Maybe Hulu, where the show already has a fierce viewership. Or Netflix, the home of #femalesarestrongashell. Or maybe we can all just kickstart and get Mindy Kaling her own damn network already.

In the meantime, as a way to distract myself from the grief cloud hovering over this house (MORGAN!!!! MORRRRRGANNNNNNNNN!!!!), here are three things I learned from The Mindy Project.

God rest her soul till we meet again.

1. I don’t have to wear sleeves. This one may not seem like much. Really, Meg? Sleeves? This is worth noting? Hell yes, it is. When I was 15, someone told me to avoid sleeveless clothes because, “although you look great, your arms are a bit heavy.” I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised. I mean, I knew I wasn’t waving around Madonna stick pins… I wasn’t delusional. But the wording really worked me over.

My arms were heavy? That description took my upper limbs a step beyond chubby and into the world of practically deformed. My heavy arms that hung heavily by my side while trying to lift light things that were too much weight to add to the heaviness of my already heavy arms. Holy hell, forget sleeveless. It was obvious to me that the best thing I could do for myself, and the pitiable people who had to look upon me, was to cover those weighted monstrosities the hell up. So I did. With ¾ length sleeves on hot days and thin sweaters on cold days. (Cable knit would have amplified the heaviness.) When I did venture out in anything less than full arm coverage, I did so as an act of defiance, “I know I don’t deserve to have the sun hit the skin above my elbow, but look me in the eyes and see if I give a damn.”

I was nearly 30 years old before Madcap Mindy showed me how ridiculous I’d been. Mindy isn’t my sister in “heavy” arms. I didn’t find solidarity in her lack of pin thin appendages. Rather I found inspiration in the easy grace with which she handled her body — arms, legs and all. There was no point being made by her choice of sleeveless blouses or short skirts or va-va-voom dresses. Her clothes were not an act of defiance. (Which was revolutionary in itself.) She wore what the hell she wanted because she was being who the hell she wanted.

In Mindy’s world, a woman who weighs more than a package of stevia could wear something something more fashionable than a sack of flour. That fact wasn’t revolutionary… it was simply a matter of course. And that, for me, was freeing as hell. I’ll never be able to thank my “best friend I’ve never met” enough for that fact. She’s changed my outlook and consequently, changed the dialogue I have with my own daughters.

2. Women don’t have to be ashamed of what they want. And they don’t have to be angered by what other women want. I’m not delusional. I know that Mindy Kaling is different from Mindy Lahiri. I know that Dr. L’s life goals diverge greatly from Grand Dame Kaling’s life goals. That being said, Kaling wrote Lahiri, and she did so with a great degree of grace and tolerance. As I watched the show, I didn’t feel Kaling judging Lahiri for having different aspirations than her creator. I felt her honoring her, rooting for her, pushing her forward. Oh my goodness, what if we could extend that same respect to the real women in our lives not just the ones we meet on TV? Could you imagine the dialogue that would ensue? The steps we’d take forward? The wounds we’d heal?

What does Mindy Lahiri want? We know early on in the series that Mindy L. is a professional woman who is also “looking for someone to go apple picking with.” She wants marriage and babies and she defines those things as integral to her happy ending. And she isn’t ashamed of it. Do you know how refreshing that storyline has been for me? A writer who also has two babies and a husband? A girl who wants her name on the front of a book and wants bubbles and baby laughter in her backyard? The Mindy Project doesn’t preach the false hope of “having it all.” Mindy has given up plenty of almost dreams for her better parts. (Dammit, San Francisco) But she is unwavering when it comes to her core happiness. To the things she feels she deserves. To the dreams she isn’t afraid of dreaming… no matter how outdated they might seem to the people around her.

Whether your dream includes babies or not, a career or not, a partner or not, compromise or not, Mindy Lahiri’s quest for her personal happiness should speak to you. You get to seek what you want without shame.

3. And finally, there is communion in the ridiculous. Listen, Mindy Lahiri is a little ridiculous. She spouts off half-baked political assessments, once said recycling makes America seem poor and went seven years without paying her taxes. But as the series went on, I didn’t find myself laughing at her, I found myself laughing with her. No one of us is free from elements of the ridiculous. We are all filled with half-baked opinions…the fact that we might keep them to ourselves doesn’t mean they don’t exist. We are all ignorant until we are not. (And then ignorant some more until we are not again.) We all have literal or figurative un-opened envelopes with contents that are past due.

Maybe we would all be better off if we stopped assuming ridiculousness was the burden of others and accepted it as the ever-evolving state of all of us. And maybe, just maybe, Mindy Lahiri style, we should just start being honest about it. Who knows? Maybe, like the great Project Herself, we’ll learn something about each other and ourselves along the way. (And laugh a little more, too.)

You know, when I heard about the cancellation, I wasn’t upset for the people in the show. They’ve proven they can create and sustain a small world and its misfit inhabitants. The actors will go on to movies. The writers will be asked to be a part of the next big thing. Mindy will continue her trajectory to a place in the stars next to Nora Ephron. (And maybe beyond?) They’re doing just fine.

Me? I’m queuing up the first season and counting my lucky stars. For a half hour every week, in a little show with little pretension, I found a brand of feminism that spoke to me, rather above or below me. I found men that loved strong women and strong women that loved men. And I found a world in which my arms were released from the constraints of décor and became beautiful and free simply because they were attached to me.

Whoa, Nelly.

Sarah Deragon’s ‘The Identity Project’ Challenges The Way We Think About Queer Identity

“The Identity Project,” from photographer Sarah Deragon, challenges the way that we compartmentalize and think about queerness and identity.

The photo series captures the way subjects want to present themselves to the world around them and communicate their personal ways of self-identifying. Mainstream understandings of what it means to be lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) tend to be narrow and specific, but with “The Identity Project,” we can see the infinite shades and hues of queerness that make up the spectrum of human identity.

dapper

The Huffington Post chatted with Deragon this week about her work and how the project has grown.

The Huffington Post: What is your driving vision for The Identity Project?
Sarah Deragon: My main vision for The Identity Project is to expand what we normally understand to be the LGBTQ communities. I wanted to create a photo project that allowed participants to self-identify and stand up and be seen for who they really are. I honestly thought that the project would be a small collection of 50 or so photographs, but the response to the project was so profound that I decided to expand it and travel to several US cities like New York City, Portland, Chicago and soon Austin to photograph more people. I imagine that this will be an ongoing project for me throughout my lifetime.

Street Art Sancocho: ArteSano Project Brings Dominican Flavor

New Year, new mural festival!

Truthfully, the appearance of new mural festivals today is faster than annual — it’s more like quarterly — but this one in the Dominican Republic was inaugurated three weeks ago and brings a certain hand crafted authenticity that holds promise for its future.

“ArteSano Project” gives you an indication of the personal nature of the art you are likely to see from the 25 local and international artists invited to Rio San Juan from December 11-22. It could be the name influencing our perception, but in one way or another it looks like these artists are chosen for their down-to-earth hand hewn approach. Sometimes decorative, sometimes storytelling, there are familiar themes and motifs that play well to their local audience as well as the virtual gawker.

Even with two dozen artists, it isn’t bloated: no logos or product tie-ins or DJs or high flying scissor lifts scaling massive multi-story walls with abstract surrealism, hyper photo-realism or dark pop human/animal/robot hybrids here – yet. Well, we take that back on the surrealism score; Pixel Pancho is here with a brood of chickens bobbing their industrial mesh necks atop fired tile bodices, hunting and pecking their way toward the beach, and Miami artist duo 2alas & Hox created a portrait of a boy with a partial mask overlay that calls to mind cyborgs (and Sten & Lex). But here in the loungey bare-foot tropical DR coastal area, even Pixel Pancho mutes the hues toward sun-bleached pastels, more easily complimenting their surroundings.

Free-running fowl overtook a few artists thematically, including another international artist who usually paints hybrid forms with dimension and almost mythic metaphor, but who this time tried his hand at something much more folkloric. “Importacion Cultural”, the flatly bright piece by Buenos Aires born Franco “Jaz” Fasoli, presents an entire wall with hand cut and paper collage, adding to the general feeling of approachability, and introducing a form of craft-inspired art-making more common to DIY Street Art of the 2000s than recent aerosol-infused mural festivals.

“The community was transformed during those days and over two weeks they began to see these great artists’ work and create specific pieces in different places around the town,” says Mario E. Ramirez, a Puerto Rican artist who has been documenting and capturing the burgeoning graffiti/Street Art scene in his country and places like DR with his partners at Tost Films. He says that an event like this that connects with a community yields a greater dialogue than some of the more commercial Street Art and graffiti enterprises, because the artists get to interact with neighbors closely. “At the completion of the ArteSano each artist felt like a distinguished guest of Rio San Juan. They made us feel at home, it was one of the best experiences of 2014.”

One of the organizers, Dominican born artist Evoca1, has experience working as a Street Artist as well as bringing actual physical sustenance and support to a community. For about four years the Miami based artist has delivered many meals to folks living on the street with his wife and friends through an organization he began called “Sketches For Mankind.”

With Evoca1 hosting the ArteSano project it became another form of community outreach and the curatorial responsibilities for the public art initiative was offered by the folks at the Vienna based INOPERAbLE Gallery, who have represented a mix of urban artists work including some in this show and others that are range into pop, dark pop, graphic irony, and more “traditional” contemporary Street Art.

Organizers say they hope that ArteSano gains traction and that people get to know the Dominican Republic as a good place for urban arts and muralism. There is not much transgressive here; With its mix of mainly latin name-brand and local homegrown talent, it looks like ArteSano makes a respectable entry into the international mural festival mileu with what may be the emerging alchemy of the decorative and the pleasing – peppered with some more challenging themes and muted socio-political messages.

Overall no one will argue that Rio San Juan is a great location for a painter or street artist from the northern hemisphere in December. Among the invited artists were BIKISMO, JADE, 2ALAS, HOXXOH, PASTEL, JAZ, EVER, ELIAN, LEO, VERO RIVERA, MODAFOCA, ENTES, FAITH47, AXEL VOID, PIXEL PANCHO, FILIO, ANGURRIA, 3TAMAROOTS, GABZ, POTELECHE, BAD6, SHAK, RUBEN, JOHANN,SEBAS, and PAOLA.

The Spoken Word: Recollections of Dryden History, The Early Years (NASA SP-2003-4530) – Scott Crossfield Interview, Muroc, NACA Research, X-1 Project

The Spoken Word: Recollections of Dryden History, The Early Years (NASA SP-2003-4530) – Scott Crossfield Interview, Muroc, NACA Research, X-1 Project

Since the founding of the Dryden Flight Research Center History Office in 1996, its staff has conducted nearly a hundred interviews with retired and serving employees. Their recollections represent a unique resource in understanding the development of aerospace technology in the second half of the 20th century. Their personal experiences, insights, and opinions allow the reader to gain an understanding into what it was actually like to have been involved with some of the milestone events in aerospace history. These interviews have been edited and assembled into this monograph, so that a wider audience can also share in their experiences. This study covers the early years of what eventually became the Dryden Flight Research Center. It spans the period between the arrival of Walter Williams and the first group of NACA engineers at Muroc in 1946, and ends with the establishment of NASA in 1958. This timeframe encompasses the breaking of the sound barrier, the pivotal inertial coupling research, the first use of computer simulations, the transformation of the NACA facility from a pair of old hangars into a state-of-the-art research center, and the dawn of the space age. These events took place against the background of the end of World War II, the start of the Cold War, and the twin technological revolutions of jet propulsion and supersonic flight. They are told by the people who participated in these events, in their own words. The foundations of the Dryden Flight Research Center date back more than a half century, to a time when aviation faced revolutionary technical changes. When the first NACA contingent arrived in September 1946, they found the Muroc Army Air Field to be an isolated and barren outpost. The post-war demobilization had left the hastily constructed base facilities in a poor state of repair. Palmdale and Lancaster in the late 1940s were rough desert towns lacking many of the conveniences to which the new arrivals from Langley (and their spouses) had been

The Toaster Project

The Toaster Project

Hello, my name is Thomas Thwaites, and I have made a toaster. So begins-áThe Toaster Project, the author’s nine-month-long journey from his local appliance store to remote mines in the UK to his mother’s backyard, where he creates a crude foundry. Along the way, he learns that an ordinary toaster is made up of 404 separate parts, that the best way to smelt metal at home is by using a method found in a fifteenth-century treatise, and that plastic is almost impossible to make from scratch. In the end, Thwaites’s homemade toasterGÇö a haunting and strangely beautiful objectGÇöcost 250 times more than the toaster he bought at the store and involved close to two thousand miles of travel to some of Britain’s remotest locations.-áThe Toaster Project-ámay seem foolish, even insane. Yet, Thwaites’s quixotic tale, told with self-deprecating wit, helps us reflect on the costs and perils of our cheap consumer culture, and in so doing reveals much about the organization of the modern world.

Jay Shells Posts Famous Rap Quotes Around Los Angeles In Clever Street Art Project

Get excited, California. Because artist Jay Shells has taken to Los Angeles with his clever guerrilla street sign installation, “Rap Quotes.”

New York art blog ANIMAL followed Shells as he cruised along the palm tree-lined streets of the Pacific coast city, placing his bright orange signs along the way. The declarations display quotes from famous hip hop artists like Snoop Dogg, Xzibit, Warren G, and Notorious B.I.G., and are appropriately placed in the exact location the lyric calls out.

Take, for example, Warren G’s quote, “So I hooks a left on 2-1 and Lewis, some brothers shooting dice so I said ‘let’s do this,'” which can be seen on the corner of Lewis and 21st. Or Xzibit’s line, “Down La Cienega to bust a left on Venice where you can find me and mine,” which can of course be found on the corner of La Cienega and Venice.

The project aims to celebrate the roots of some of these artists as well as the cities that produce them. Shells previously took “Rap Quotes” to New York City, so we’re anxious to see which locale gets “signed” next. Feel free to speculate in the comments.

Anna Gunn To Guest Star On ‘The Mindy Project’

Anna Gunn is trading in a meth empire for scrubs and will guest star on “The Mindy Project,” E! Online reports. She’ll be playing Mindy’s (Mindy Kaling) hero, Sheila Hamilton, a New York OB/GYN who tries to woo her from her current residency at Shulman & Associates.

Gunn, who recently won an Emmy for her role as Skyler White on the AMC series “Breaking Bad,” will appear in the 13th episode this season. It will be her first acting gig since the show’s finale, and viewers can safely assume her time on “The Mindy Project” will be less dramatic than her role on “Breaking Bad.”

Since beginning its second season back in September, “The Mindy Project” has already welcomed a number of guest stars such as James Franco, Adam Pally (the “Happy Endings” star has since become a series regular) and Timothy Olyphant. However, after Gunn’s role in one of the most talked about shows in recent television history, and on the heels of her Emmy win, this is a coup for “The Mindy Project.”

“The Mindy Project” airs Tues. at 9:30 p.m. EST on Fox.
